While most of the kids are busy with their play station, Tenith Adithyaa took up the responsibility to work for the betterment of the country. Indeed, plastic is our environment’s enemy, and it is high time we look for a plastic alternative. And now we do have an option of banana leaves. Sounds interesting? Well, let’s take you through this Make in India social innovation that Tenith has created.
Founder’s background
Tenith Adithyaa, a scientist hailing from the Wartap village in Tamil Nadu has varied interests. He completed his graduation in computer science engineering from SVS, College of Engineering, Coimbatore. Being an innovator, a professional coin collector, a teacher, a bird tamer, a software developer, and a gamer just proves his versatility.
It’s surprising to know how he spends most of his time in the lab experimenting with new things which can help society. He has already learned 35 computer applications and 6 languages. Shocking, right? Well, he’s nothing less than a genius.
The Initiative
His social empathy helped Tenith come up with this social innovation – banana leaf technology. He shared that all of it started at the age of 10 when he saw farmers throwing away bulks of banana leaves. He wanted to help the farmers increase their income, and that’s when the idea to do something with banana leaves crossed his mind. This Make in India technology that Adithyaa invented ensures that banana leaves can be preserved for three years without the use of any chemicals.
Banana Leaf Technology
While taking us through the banana leaf technology, Tenith shared that this technology is a cellular eco-friendly technology. It also combines a set of processes for natural preservation. According to Adithyaa’s technology, the cells in living organisms are made to stop in a way that their metabolism is stopped.
The cells are preserved in a way that the natural components remain intact. This stops the banana leaf from aging and makes it last longer. He shared these leaves are 100 percent biodegradable, healthy, eco-friendly, and are a viable replacement for disposables. It can also be used as manure if disposed of properly.
The Products
This banana leaf technology can make several products such as ice cream cones, envelopes, plates, spoons, gift wraps, cups, etc. Tenith Adithyaa said that the use of this technology for making different products is comparatively cheap. He explains his products are available in four different grades based on the thickness and durability of the product.
The banana leaf technology plays an important role in enhancing the use and value of the leaves. Tenith Adithyaa asserted that the banana leaf technology is a great option as a plastic alternative and this would reduce the use of plastic and paper.
Clash of opinions and Clarification
We all know that banana leaves are not easily available in Northern India. And using this technology might be costlier in North India and might not attract manufacturers and users. The bulk procurement of banana leaves might be harmful to the trees also.

To the above statements, Tenith Adithyaa assured banana trees produce leaves in bulk quantities which will be enough to fulfill market needs. He also mentioned that if we use banana leaves as a replacement for disposables, it’ll prevent the destruction of trees. Tenith successfully proved that the banana leaf technology will lessen the loss of natural life.
The Success Story
The banana leaf technology has a powerful environmental, innovative, and economic impact on society. The Ministry of Environment and Forests, GOI has approved this project as well. Tenith Adithyaa has received several awards for the innovation of banana leaf technology.
His awards collection includes seven international awards and several national awards including the prestigious International Environmental Awards, International Green Technology Awards, and the Technology for Future Awards, among others.
