Everytime my grandma goes to colombia to visit relatives there she show us all the new parks and natural places there you can visit and THEY ARE SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. JASON WOULD LOVE TO LIVE IN A PLACE SO COLOURFUL SO FULL OF GREEN ZONES LIKE COLOMBIA. 

He would also love the fact that there are so many resources to keep the environment clean and preserve not only the animals but overall nature too. (I've seen all the things they have to motive people to recycle and not littering, all the volunteers groups to clean cities and plant new things, every thing they have to teach the youth to more about nature and how to keep it safe ecc. And the all the establishments to protect endangered animal species ecc? Loving it)

Please make him some traditional dishes like empanadas, buñuelos, bandeja paisa, arepas etc. He would literally go crazy with all that tasty food. Even if doesn't really need to eat since yeah he's a zombie he would love to try some new things. The last time someone cooked a warm meal for him was when his mom was still alive, from there he had to eat the most atrocious things cause 1 he doesn't really like eating alone 2 he doesn't have the motivation to cook because it's hard for him to take care of himself and 3 he overall just doesn't have time for that 

He would be so clueless about the whole witchcraft thing but as soon as you explain it to him he would actually like to spend time watching what you do ecc and he will treasure every crystal you give him. Not only because they're pretty (yes Jason likes pretty things), not only because it's something from you either but because you told him the purpose of it too. Everytime he needs to go slash some campers he would put in his pocket a crystal for protection or if he feels particularly stressed he would use the one that helps with that. Maybe you could make him a bracelet with those crystals so he can carry them more easily 👀 

To resume, any gift from you and anything you do for him is always going to be the best thing ever in Jason's eyes. He will repay by doing the same and bringing you any flower, rock ecc that he thinks it's pretty. 

You absolutely have to do a marvel marathon with Jason, he needs to catch up with all these things ASAP. He would try to watch everything you like and learn about it so you can have someone to talk with about it. • he always cooks you breakfast, and if he's not there early in the morning because of schedules he always leave u something to eat or texts you before you wake up something along the lines of,

• "good morning my love, make sure to eat."

• living with him sometimes gets a little messy, although it's always the result of a moment to be remembered whether y'all were being messy in the bedroom (if you know what i mean) or if y'all were making a mess in the kitchen throwing flour everywhere

• when he is home in the morning you always see him sleeping in the most awkward position, one half on the bed, and the other off

• he always moves around and although you don't mind cuddling with him you push him off because it gets hot at night sometimes

• he always brings you souvenirs, especially teddy bears, and stuffed animals because when he's not home at least he knows you've got company, even though it's not real company.

• if yeonjun wasn't as famous as he was he would spend all his time with you, so any break he gets he is ALWAYS with you

Hello! It’s already May... Life updates - a roller coaster of emotions

A tempestuous, tearful April... Aghh the struggle has not eased up a bit. Living is just too expensive to be shouldered by part-time wages, meager freelance, and fickle confidence. My parents are disappointed - I’ve always tried to dodge the questions about my uncertain future. After all, I don’t have any answers.

What nearly broke my spirit was the humiliating scolding I received on my birthday. “You’re almost 30. Stop playing around at the cafe, don’t you know your bank account is nearly empty? How will you pay for this? If you can’t afford car insurance then just bike to work!” I didn’t even have time to think about how inconsiderate that was. In a daze, I hung up and went to my second part-time job that day.

Well, Dad, those are the questions I asked myself every single day. All I can do is keep trying even if you don’t believe in me. Because, despite everything, I still believe in myself.

Nothing good will come out of asking these punishing questions. I don’t know if things will get better or worse. Just gotta do what I can to get by as a small creature existing in this universe.

I learned to stop blaming myself for not being successful. Given the circumstances, I think the odds are stacked pretty high against most of us right now.

I’ve begun my investment journey! After studying how it all works I have come to understand the value of investing. It was one of my resolutions for this year and I’m glad I’ve achieved it.

My brother, a crypto enthusiast, knows my monetary plight and has been helping me out in the weirdest ways.

6 am text: “Hey Sis, you got $1000? Put it into Dogecoin... like NOW.”

I don’t like doing these kinds of high-risk-high-reward investments but what the heck, I was desperate. I applied for an account that can trade crypto.

In the end my account got rejected (there was no explanation) and I gave up. Because of course that would happen lol.

My roommate / best friend decided she wanted to move to her own place and find her own way in life. Of course, my fragile heart, still tender from the previous month’s beating, took it very personally. I was reassured it wasn’t my fault - there are plenty of other valid reasons why.

We’ve been sharing an apartment for 6 years now, and although I knew it would happen someday, it was quite shocking to hear it being said to me in reality. At first, I laughed it off because I’ve been dreaming about moving out of the country anyway and it all works out. I’m an introverted, neat-freak, homebody! It’s perfect! But after a very pensive shower, I realized that I’m actually terrified to be without any companionship. Either way, I have to put my feelings aside because I don’t wanna hold her back from her dreams. I may have trouble accepting it now but hopefully I can genuinely be happy for her in time.

The Plant Life Please welcome Rokurou, the newest addition to my jungle.

It’s been a few weeks and he totally ate bugs already lol. Nice! I was thinking the smaller traps wouldn’t catch anything, but it turns out they’ve been doing the most work. The larger traps can’t catch ants or tiny gnats. They just crawl out after the trap snaps shut.

This venus fly trap is rather picky about what water he gets so I’ve been out there collecting rainwater in buckets JUST for him! Kind of a pain, but I will do whatever it takes to keep him alive.

It was a very tiny dream of mine to collect and care for carnivorous plants. If the shop had more varieties, I would probably buy them all.

I thought I was gonna die... Hostess for a day. One day while working at the cafe, this old Chinese man came in asking how much I made here. Then he told me if I work as a hostess/front desk person at his restaurant (which was next to the cafe, by the way), he will pay me more than the cafe. He slipped me $5 to go see him after my shift at 9pm. It was soooooo sketch. But I went anyway to at least hear him out after telling my roommate and my parents where I was going. You know... in case I die.

Luckily I didn’t die. It was a normal Chinese restaurant. I met the staff and they were all super cool and the mysterious old man goes by Mr. Lin.

Mr. Lin was very chill about it. He said I can have a trial run after my bakery shift on Saturday. If I don’t like it, I can just tell him no and he will pay me for my time.

I knew it was a bad idea to take another shift after a long shift at the cafe but I did it anyway. It was BUSY. Too busy for anyone to teach me how to be a hostess so I literally just had to guess what I’m supposed to be doing. It was kinda obvious though, showing people to their tables. I picked them at random bc I didn’t know if there was a method to seating people or not.

There are three different menus: Chinese, Korean and English and they’re ALL different. Depending on the nationality of who walks in, I have to decide for myself which menu to hand out. Uhhhhh despite being Asian myself, I cannot tell the difference between Korean and Chinese people lmao so I have to keep awkwardly asking people which menu they want. *screams*

The manager, Vincent, is so OP though. He knows exactly which menu to get every time. I was like HOW DO YOU KNOW?? He only responded with ��working in the business for 24 years.”

Anyway, it was a long and confusing night of people thinking I am a waitress and me not knowing where the spoons are. But I don’t think this job is for me, even if it pays a lot.

There sure is plenty of demand for part-time food service workers and zero demand for full-time graphic designers... sigh. My journey doing random jobs in 2021 continues.

My brother graduated pharmacy school last week. In our culture, the older sibling’s shoulders is where all the expectations should rest. Maybe in another AU I would feel small and inferior to my younger and more successful sibling. But I don’t feel anything like that. In fact, if he can take care of my parents while I’m trying to figure out my own life, then I’m just more grateful to him. Maybe my parents don’t expect anything of me anymore, which is okay. Either way, my brother and I have each other’s backs.

Berseria I went into it with ZERO expectations because of its infamous predecessor, but I have come out pleasantly surprised. I liked it more than I thought. I’m at the end but I’m not done with the story yet.

I remember expressing my utter confusion about Zesty and everyone was like “play Berseria, it will answer a majority of your questions.” And boy, it did and I’m so glad. I loved all the throwbacks and references and lore that had to do with the previous game. Like, they really had something interesting going on here but it never quite came to fruition last time.

Is it just me, or did it take a very long time to understand all the battle mechanics? Like... I didn’t get the hang of the game until we got to Meirchio. Now I am quite good at playing Rokurou, my main. And it feels way more fun. I usually like mage characters in the old tales games but tbh I wasn’t really into it this time.

After we finish Bersy, we will be moving on to Xillia 2, our final Tales game! Gaius, I’m coming for you.

Xenoblade At the same time, I am also finishing up Xenoblade after spending nearly a year on it. I have weeks where I’m just grinding the side quests to unlock the skill trees. When I’m down, traveling and exploring in this game puts my worries to rest. Really though, the maps are so beautiful... And the music! T_T

This is one of the few games where I like every character pretty much equally, though Dundun and Riki win by just a little bit.

It completely takes over and ends when it decides to and it likes to stay around for awhile. It also happens daily and more than once. Although, nowadays I feel like I’m just always in a bad mood.

Is your curfew flexible, if you have one? At 31 I don’t have a curfew, but actually never had one. I didn’t go anywhere so there was no need to even set one. I’ve always been such a homebody.

Regardless, when is the latest you have come home from a night out? When I was a college I had some late nights with friends that went on until like maybe 2 or 3 at the latest, but it wasn’t often. I did like the late night Taco Bell runs, though. Ha.

Do you have a weak stomach? Yes. Are you usually the person comforting, or the person being comforted? The comforter.

Do you actually use the camera on your phone? Yeah.

Tennis shoes or flats? Tennis shoes/sneakers.

Are you a good planner or do you settle for spontaneity? I’m a planner.

What do you do to pass the time when you’re a passenger on a long car journey? Listen to music, talk, sleep. I wish I could read, but I get motion sickness.

Girls - if you got pregnant now, would you keep it? Guys - what would your reaction be if your girlfriend fell pregnant? I can’t get pregnant and I don’t want kids.

Are there any specific piercings you would never, ever get done? Most piercings. <<< I don’t have plans to get any, honestly, but yeah there’s definitely some I never would.

It’s pouring with rain and you don’t have anywhere you need to be - how do you spend your day? Just like every day. <<< Yeah, I don’t do anything different but I do love rainy days. We don’t get many of them, sadly.

How often do your family go out for meals? We get takeout a lot. I do at least once a day to be honest. My DoorDash past orders list is quite long, ha. We haven’t all been out to eat together in over a year. I did go out to eat at a restaurant for the first time last month with my mom and aunt, though, and have gone a couple times since then with my mom.

Assuming you had sufficient funds, would you be capable of living alone, paying bills and looking after yourself properly? No. It is best for me that I still live at home given my situation. It’s what I want and feel comfortable with, I have no desire to live on my own.

What were your favourite things to do as a child? I was obSESSED with Barbies.

Are you happy to spend time being single, or are you one of those people who jumps from relationship to relationship? I’m honestly fine with being single. 

If you were shopping with your best friend, and they picked an outfit that was completely unflattering, would you tell them? Ahh. I wouldn’t know how to go about that. I had a friend who had to try everything on and ask my opinion and I really didn’t like it. I tried to shift it back to them and be like, “what do you think? Is it comfortable?” lol or something like that. If I wasn’t asked then I very likely wouldn’t say anything. If they like it, then I’m like hey do what you want.

Do you find it easy to open up to people about your past? I don’t find it easy to open up in general.

If you’re out in the middle of nowhere and need the toilet, do you try and hold it in or just go behind a bush somewhere? Thankfully I don’t ever find myself out in the middle of nowhere.

Do you prefer using air-con or having the windows down when you’re driving on a hot day? AC for sure. Having the windows down is just having hot air blowing on me.

Can you ever manage to finish three courses when you go out to eat at restaurants? Noo, definitely not. I rarely am able to finish my meal as it is.

What would you say your favourite farm animal is? Horses are pretty awesome. They’re so beautiful and majestic.

How do you react when someone you’re friends with has a bad attitude? I’ll have some thoughts in my head, ha, but I didn’t really do anything. 

Is it easy to embarrass you, or are you one of those people who just plays things off? I'm very easily embarrassed, but I try to play it off.

Are you comfortable going shopping or to the movies with your parents? Yeah, I do that all the time with my mom.

Yes I am working from home right now and I hate it. I’m trying to find the positive but it’s hard.

I live with my parents so no. My mother works days and my father works nights. So he’s kicking around during the day and she’s hanging around in the evening. I’m surround at all times.Someone save me!

ARE YOU A HOMEBODY?

Not really. I like to recharge at home and be by myself every now and again but I’m also cool with being out of the house most of the day. It’s a delicate balance. 

AN EVENT THAT YOU WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT GOT CANCELLED?

One of my family reunions was supposed to be in New Orleans in June. They cancelled it pretty early on during this. At first it seemed premature but given recent events they were smart to tell us when they did. Although I already bought my plane ticket so now I have to use the money within a year. I just have to figure out where to go.

WHAT MOVIES HAVE YOU WATCHED RECENTLY?

I watched “Just Wright” for the first time in many years. It’s corny but I love it. Especially since it’s a romcom with a plus size lead and her weight isn’t something the male likes her in spite of. It just is what it is. Also I love Queen Latifah. So I watch just about everything she’s in. 

WHAT SHOWS ARE YOU WATCHING?

Good girls, Charmed, Brooklyn 99, Legends of tomorrow, On My Block. 

When my mom is home she keeps HGTV and Hallmark on so Hometown, Flip or Flop, various Hallmark movies. 

WHAT MUSIC ARE YOU LISTENING TO?

I’ve been listening to the same 3 songs I always listen to lol. I love Tori Kelly and Kirk Franklin and Justin Timberlake and Lizzo. 

I did recently listen to Meghan Trainor’s new album. It’s good but it has too many slow songs. I have also been listening to “I think we’re alone now” by Tiffany on repeat. It’s my quarantine theme song. For obvious reasons. 

WHAT ARE YOU READING?

I read a lot of fanfic. Mostly Good Girls with some charmed and gendrya thrown in. I did start reading “Gods of Jade and Shadow” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia and I love it! It’s something about it that just drew me in from the first page. I am about 60 % done and I’m really invested. 

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR SELF-CARE?

Self-care? Never heard of her...

My self care consists of getting out of the house when I can to get fresh air and cleaning the various rooms and spaces I’m in often. When they are clean I don’t constantly think about what needs to be clean so that helps me relax. Lol I’m weird.

Are you staying home from work/school? 

classes are suspended and i’m back home at least until the 15th, although i suspect it’ll keep getting extended for the rest of the semester.

If you’re staying home, who’s there with you?

stayed in an empty flatshare for the first 10 days before i started losing my goddamn mind and decided to return home.  i’m now back with my parents, which is going as well as you might imagine.

Are you a homebody?

definitely, but i started getting stir crazy the day the choice to go out was taken away from me. we only have partial quarantine at night and technically i can still go out, but i’m trying to keep that to a very minimum because no one is taking this seriously here and it feels like a time bomb waiting to explode.

What movies have you watched recently?

I’ve been slowly making my way through wong kar wai’s filmography. when my brain is too overwhelmed to handle anything deep, though, i just watch whatever entertaining trash i can find. i saw charlie’s angels yesterday and enjoyed every single trashy minute of it.

An event that you were looking forward to that got cancelled?

oh man. so many things graduation-related. this was supposed to be my last semester at college and even though i am not the most sociable person, i was still very much looking forward to making some memories with people i know i may very well not see again/for a very long time. we had so many events to look forward to and now we’re suddenly not even sure when our exams will be or whether we��ll be even graduating on time. i know on the grand scheme of things none of this is important, but it’s still a bummer.

What music are you listening to?

somewhat related to question #4, i haven’t been able to get california dreamin’ out of my mind for 4 days lmao. aside from that, though, i’m mostly listening to classical music/instrumentals .

What are you reading?

i’m unfortunately really struggling with reading rn. between trying to keep up with assigned readings and research for my senior thesis, i haven’t been able to do a lot of reading for pleasure. and then the whole covid-19 thing happened and even my few functional brain cells short-circuited. 

i’ve just finished sum: forty tales from the afterlives by david eagleman upon the recommendation of a friend and am currently rereading iris murdoch’s the unicorn for a class, so hopefully i can get through this reading slump.

What are you doing for self care?

frankly, not much. i’m trying to tell myself not to worry too much about coursework right now and to take it slowly, but aside from that, i can’t say i’m managing very well.

Are you a homebody? i think so! although its not always by choice! i like a social gathering of the ‘close friends hanging out’ variety, but i appear to have befriended many borderline-frat-bros recently so im lacking in the social engagement that i like best:( so mostly i just stay home. straight people parties exhaust me lmao, and im tired of being concerned about alcohol poisoning or weed-induced anxiety. also don’t know how to ask people i like to spend time with me so moslty! i just stay home!

An event you were looking forward to that got canceled? yeah! i had a poster presentation for a research project the week everything got cancelled, so i was a little disappointed about that! i was also supposed to see a production of paradise lost in late april and also maybe go to paris that week, which are both noooot really going to happen at this point:( AND i was supposed to go over to someone’s place and she was gonna cook for me and i was gonna try to hype myself up and maybe kiss her so IDK!! kinda bad timing lol!

What shows are you watching? i’m watching Altered Carbon rn! also rewatching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt in the background while i like, brush my teeth or chop onions or whatever lol! i finished rewatching ATLA 2ish weeks ago, and i’m considering a rewatch of LOK too 👀

What music are you listening to? uuh i’ve been listening to a lot of Courtney Barnett the past few days ! i mostly listen to music on the bus and i. am not really on the bus much these days lmao.. i listened to New Order and Spoon in the car the other day as well i think!

What are you reading? mostly stuff for class:( i’m not allowed to read anything else until i catch up on my class reading! i’m making my way through Hanif Kureishi’s The Buddha of Suburbia rn, and i read Coriolanus like 5 times this month for an essay lol. i also found a printed copy of “Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” that i had put up in my cubicle last summer, which is now taped above my bedside table lol so i have been reading that poem a lot, if that counts!

What are you doing for self-care? hmm im cooking more for sure! playing animal crossing! allowing myself to be unproductive, which is something i definitely struggle with! and i am TRYING to drink more water but ooooh my god am i bad at it lol. i also just spent more money than i should’ve on art prints bc im in my bedroom more than ever before and i want nice things to contemplate :)

Martine's POV

"Why are you even bringing this up now? I already told you, I don't know yet. It's just annoying how no matter what answer I give you, you just don't believe me!" 

We haven't moved na inch from my house and we're already fighting. I love this man, but there are days when I just don't know what's going through his head. This is one of those days. I have no idea how this conversation even turned into a fight.

"Nick, you always say that. 'I don't know yet','Maybe','Let's see', but you've already decided! You keep telling me to be involved more but you're not letting me in. You keep making these decisions without even telling me."

"Well I don't know what to fucking tell you. I. Don't. Know. Don't act like you know everything about me. Maybe if you listen to what I'm actually saying instead of interpreting my words the way you want to, you'll actually do." 

"Now I'm the one not listening! Did you even hear what I just said? Whenever I ask you about serious things like this, you either walk away, raise your voice, or change the topic. How am I going to listen if you're not going to say anything! How are we partner if you're not involving me in your life? You want me to change, but you're not willing to do the same."

Nick closes his eyes for a second and shakes his head. "I love you, Martine. With all that I have. The things I do, I do them for us. I'm trying my best here, but I just...can we stop talking about this now? They're all waiting for us and we're here fighting about something so far off the future. Can we talk about this later?" Next month isn't that far off the future though.

It's his dream job overseas. It's starting next month. And even if he doesn't want to admit it, I know he's going to take it.

Friday, 2 PM

Nick's POV

"You're giving her a ring for your monthsary? Dude, if I were your girlfriend, I'm gonna be scared. Three months of dating and you look like you're going to propose to me."

"We've known each other for years. She's not gonna freak out. I just want to surprise her." I don't care about what they say, I'm gonna give her the ring.

"You know, you look different now. But, dude you look like a high school kid having his first girlfriend," my coworker says as he sips his coffee. "Oh, wait..." then, he laughs. 

Actually, we both do. It's sort of true. 

"Nick, the director's asking for you in her office." Shit. 

I knocked on Annie's door, bracing myself of her wrath because when is she not mad, but I saw that she's actually happy? "Annie? You were asking for me?"

"Take a seat, Nick."

"What's up?"

"Do you remember the time I sent over Rachel to the Sydney office for a job in their strategy team?"

"Uh, yeah? That was pretty cool." Pretty cool, my ass. I wanted that job, too! I couldn't stop talking about it for weeks, Martine can practically repeat every word. We weren't even dating yet at the time. But since Rachel and I were schoolmates, meh I let it go. My time will come, I said.

"Well, Rachel's coming back here to the country to get married and the job's open. It's yours if you want it."

"What...mine? You're offering...the Sydney spot...to me?" With that job, Martine and I will be able to get married and settle down in no time! But, shit knows 3 months into dating, we both can't do long distance. Fucking hell. This is hard.

I'm supposed to type in a message for Martine, but instead the hundreds of messages in our friends' group chat stole my attention. 

'DRINKS TOM?'

'Yassss, you guys game at 9? Same place?'

'Y'ALL GAME'

'Oh my god. Rachel's getting married?! What the fuck' - Martine

'Yes lol she's moving to the states too'

'What the fuck. Is she preggo'

'Don't think so. Dude we're not 18 anymore. We don't need a baby to get married.'

'LOL GUYS. ANNIE OFFERED THE JOB TO NICK? BRO, CONGRATS.' This guy's also my coworker. News must have spread through the office. 

Martine has been calling my phone after that message. I'm still not sure whether this is a good news or not so I have no guts to answer her call.

Here goes nothing. "Hey, babe."

"Hi, love." A few seconds of silence. "About that job."

"Ah, yeah. I don't know about that yet. I mean, yeah I know about it but I don't know if I'm going to take it."

"You should...you should take it."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah."

This is something we're both good at -- avoiding an important conversation.

Saturday, 10 PM

Nick's POV

We arrived at the party pretty late because, well, we kept bickering about the Sydney thing. 

"Hey, man! What's up?" Our friends greeted as find our seats with them.

"So Nick, should we be congratulating you already? Are you taking the Sydney spot?" I look over at Martine and she's rolling her eyes downing a glass of gin. I can see her smiling, but I know that smile. And, she tells me she wants me to take it.

"I'm not sure yet, guys. I need to think about it."

"Wow, so mature! It's as if you weren't talking shit about wanting to snatch that job out of Rachel's hands 2 years ago."

As the night progresses and people are starting to get drunk, Martine still isn't talking to me and prefers to talk to the girls. 

I'm getting a drink from the bar, when a friend of ours approached me. "Are you guys fighting?"

"Pretty much."

"You two need to talk about your shit."

"You know I try."

"Do you really?"

"I do! But, she doesn't believe me. I tell her one thing, but she assumes that she knows me from head to toe and misinterprets what I want to say."

"What exactly did you tell her? Will you take this job?"

"I don't know. I want to, but I'm afraid we'd drift apart. We're together here and we fight more often than an old married couple as it is."

"Did you tell her that? Why you can't decide?"

"No...but that's not the question. Whatever the reason is, I really haven't decided. But, she assumes that I'm going to so she feels like I'm not including her in my plan."

"Then tell her!"

"She won't believe me even if I did."

"Have you tried yet?"

Three Months Before

Martine's POV

"What? You guys broke up?"

"What did you do this time? She's been my favorite so far!"

"Don't you regret any of the relationships that you've had? The hundreds of them?"

"First of all, it's about 10. That's not a bad number. Second, no I don't regret any of them."

Nick finally showed up in one of our drinking sessions again after a month and announces that he's single again...after about 2 months of dating.

"I just haven't found the right person yet." He looks over at me.

He's asked me out before. I said no. Multiple times. We're friends and it's pretty awkward if we start dating and then break up. I don't want to mess with this group that we've had since high school. Don't get me wrong, I do...kinda...just a little bit feel the same way. I just, I don't have the guts to jump the gun with him. 

We're basically opposites. He's outgoing, I'm a homebody. He's all over having these relationships, I'm pretty much a prude. He's a career chaser, I'm very much chill. 

"OR! Maybe you've found her, but you were just rejected?" 

"OHHHH SHIT!" The groups laughs. Yes, everyone pretty much knows.

I lined up to the washroom and Nick followed.

"Hey," he said.

"Heyy," in a much drunker tone. God, I AM drunk.

"You okay?"

"Yep, 'kay 'kay."

"Martine."

"Yeah?"

"You know if there's something I might regret."

"What."

"Not being with you."

We're laughing together, about something - something I'm not even sure what about. 

Next thing I knew, his lips were on mine. 

Sunday, 5 AM

After the party's died down and they're back in their car to go home, they both know that they either talk about it or not sleep that night. 

"Take the job, Nick."

Nick looks over at Martine and he doesn't understand why that statement pinched him. "Do you mean that?"

"I don't know."

There was a long pause. 

"You know I love you, right?" Martine asked.

"Hmm," he answered.

He looks over to her. "I want to take the job."

"I knew you did."

"See that's the thing. Martine, I didn't. I was thinking twice about it because I was scared of what might happen to us, but instead of listening to me, you just went ahead and assumed that I will. What if I didn't want to take it? Yes, fucking dream job and all, but that's not my whole life. There's you and I value you, too."

"I saw you."

"Saw what?"

"You were searching for Sydney apartments already."

"I was just looking!"

"But half of you knows you're going to take it. That's your problem, Nick. You never tell me anything. You say what you think I want to hear when I only want to know what you really think. You're wondering why I keep asking. Of course I don't want you to go! I want you to stay here. But, I won't stop you if you choose to because I love you and I believe in you. You say you value me, but you never let me in. I still have no idea what runs through that head of yours. I can't love you if I don't even understand you."

There was another long silence.

"Maybe..." "Maybe." They said at the same time.

"Go ahead." He says.

"Maybe we should go back to being just friends."

He held his breath and stared at the wheel. "Maybe..." Although intending to say the exact opposite, "I should go."

19. Do you have fangirls/fanboys? Surprisingly, yes. I’m happy that people like my work and everything, but I’ve had to sign my fair share of restraining orders because some people don’t know what the word privacy means.

20. What are you most afraid of? I guess dying....wow, it just got so dark hahaha...I’m just really scared of the unknown like what happens after...I don’t know, sorry...

21. What do you usually wear? It depends a lot on my mood. I really enjoy fashion so every day is different. One day, I’ll be in super bright colorful clothing with loads of pattern, the next day i’m in a frilly white dress.

22. What’s one food that tempts you? Cottage pie...yes, I know it typically has peas, but I make mine without that abomination of a vegetable.

25. What class are you (low class, middle class, high class)? I was born in a upper middle class family. My mom is one of the associate curators at the Met and my dad is one of the directors at the MoMA. He also teaches at the New School for Fine arts. I would still consider myself middle class, make enough to have financial stability.

26. How many friends do you have? Not as many as people would like to think. I have a decent amount of friends that I talk to on a daily basis. The rest are just acquaintances. I like my privacy so it takes time for me to warm up to people. Although, if you’re my friend, you already know we’re friends forever; ride or die kinda deal. Friendship means a lot to me.

27. What are your thoughts on pie? If you’re cottage or shepherd’s pie, hell yeah...the rest, i don’t care about.

28. Favorite drink? Any kind of fruit juice, especially lemonade. I’m not a huge fan of alcohol. I’m a huge lightweight... my limit is like two mixed drinks hahaha. I’m usually the mom of the group when my friends go out to drink.

29. What’s your favorite place? The New York Aquarium..my dad and I used to go there a lot. Lot of good memories were made there. That place was so magical to me when I was younger lol...

I’m shy and struggle with talking to others or starting a conversation, however once started I can maintain one and an also a good listener. But I have trouble making friends. I get nervous if I have to speak to a teacher or someone similar.

You two mostly spend time together, either helping around the monastery, hanging out together, having tea, etc. A lot of times Annette hangs out with you guys two (and before you finish that thought NO she is not third-wheeling cause everyone loves Annette).

Despite not approaching her, she can tell whenever you feel discouraged, so every time she notices you like this, she makes sure to make you feel even extra special.

If you were ever to move in together or just, in general, decide to live together, I can just imagine you guys running your very own sweet shop or bakery!

If the monastery or someone is holding some sort of event where they’ll have desserts, they always ask you guys if you can make them. 

You two are always experimenting with new desserts and have other people try them, mostly Annette, Ashe or Lysithea.

Whenever you guys read together, Mercedes always prepares tea for you two. Or just chilling together where you might be playing a game, reading or of some sort and Mercedes will be knitting or sewing (probably making something for you tbh lol).

Also because you tend to overwork yourself and are stressed a lot, she tends to fret about you a lot. So she shows her love by doing every little small thing she can. Madge Maril: Hello Emma!! Thank you for joining me on gchat this lovely evening. What are you up to today?

Emma Zack: HEY DARLIN! I'm here at my desk, doing my job. You know, the usual.

MM: Yes! Usual. What's your job?

EZ: Suppose you could say I have two! My day job (9-5) is as the publications manager at the Innocence Project. My other job, which only recently turned into another full-time job, is being the owner of a plus-sized vintage shop, Berriez!

MM: Well now I have to ask how you got into both.

EZ: Haha. Do it.

MM: How did you get into these two very different positions?

EZ: I'll start with the Innocence Project. I've studied prisons/criminology since I was a freshman in college. I worked in prisons/in the criminal justice sphere in college, and after college, decided that I wanted to continue on this path. I got a job at the Innocence Program in Boston, which then led me to the Innocence Project in NYC! And as for Berriez, I started it because I needed a hobby. I was (and still am tbh) really depressed, and needed something to get my mind smiling. Also, I had a bunch of clothing. Also also, I was shopping vintage online often and was never finding my size. So, all of those factors led me to start Berriez!

MM: So many questions — but maybe the weirdest one first. So you're from Boston, and now you live in NYC. What's that experience like? Do you feel like a cool New Yorker? I've heard that's a feeling.

EZ: Lol!! Quite the opposite, really. I oftentimes feel like a loser. I am a homebody and rarely leave the house, unlike most New Yorkers. Also, I move at a very slow pace, and New York is so. Freakin. Fast. It's hard to keep up. But, I will say that it's 854930574389574 times better than boring ole Boston!

MM: I've also heard about this fast pace. But honestly I don't think I know what it means? Is it more just how busy people are? 

EZ: It's the strangest thing. Since I moved to New York, I've developed insomnia, am bad at responding to texts/keeping in touch with people (which I used to be so good at before NYC), and seeing people — even my best friends — is hard because everyone is just so "busy." Not sure what we're all doing, but all I know is that we're busy. Also, let's talk about how everyone here walks fast. I truly can't keep up. I walk so slow, and people make fun of me for it all the time… like, let a girl walk at her own pace!

MM: Hahaha that's really all I've ever connected in my brain before when I've heard about New Yorkers pace — like a literal fast walking pace. 

EZ: It's true!

MM: And I know you have a ~ partner. Did y'all meet in Boston or NYC?

EZ: Nope, we met here in NYC!

MM: What was that like? Do you think the NYC climate of fast-paced energy affected it at all? 

EZ: What was meeting my partner in NYC like?

MM: Yeah! It seems so idyllic to me, a midwesterner, while also seeming like it could be intense with how busy people are.

EZ: Oh yeah, it really just kind of happened. And I met him only a month after I moved here! It was so unplanned. When we met, I knew there was something there, something special. I wouldn't say it was NYC though — I'd say it was the ~universe~ and the timing of it all meeting each other at certain points in our lives where we could commit to each other, etc.

MM: So do you believe in fate?

EZ: Lol, no.

MM: Hahahaha.

EZ: But I believe that everything happens for a reason? Bad or good? Is that fate? I don't think so. I also don't believe in "1 tru luv.”

MM: I don't think I do either! Though I really did as a kid. Like X Files... I want to believe.

EZ: Totally… I did too! But not anymore, even though I love my partner so much. And want to stay with him.

MM: I think those two things can co exist, because same for me with mine — a love, but also realizing that there have been other people, and could be other people, and that you're actively choosing this one person right now though.

EZ: Exactly!

MM: Also while I am extremely enjoying this I can feel the unseen reader wanting me to ask you about Berriez. 

EZ: Of course, of course. Lemme hear the questions!

MM: Where to begin! You mentioned a lot that I want to know more about — starting a business (can't imagine), starting a business with depression, online vintage, plus-size vintage. Can you tell me more about any of those things, whatever you want to tell me about?

EZ: Hmmmmmm. Well, I suppose when I started Berriez (formerly known as Fruity Looms), I didn't intend for it to be a "Business.” Or, rather, I didn't think of it as a business. I just thought of it as something I was doing in my free time with my friends (who would model for me).

MM: RIP Fruity Looms.

EZ: RIP FRUITY LOOMS 💔. It started to take off about 4 months in I'd say, that's when it started to get a bit more busy. Then, over the summer, it truly turned into a "business"/full-time job… it's still something I do in my free time, but it's no longer a hobby per se. It's a job. I still love it with all my heart! It's just a lot more work than when I started.

MM: I was about to ask — that can be hard, right? Turning a passion project into a job. I feel like it's not something that's talked about a lot, and people really idealize creatives who get to work in their own creative fields — especially fashion because glamour! Glam! But then there's this unspoken weight where you've morphed something you love into your "Career.”

EZ: Yup!! It's very weird, and I'm in this strange place where I really don't know what I'm doing or what I want to do, because I've done criminal justice work for so long, and Berriez really just popped in out of nowhere… do I want to take that risk? Leaving criminal justice to pursue Berriez full-time? I don't know! I suppose I could always go back. It doesn't seem reliable to me. It's scary.

MM: Why? 

EZ: Well... money, for starters! And I work well having a set schedule. Wake up at 6 to work on Berriez, go to my other job, come home to work on Berriez. If I didn't have my other job, would it be hard for me to fill that time? Would I be strict enough with myself? Also, when I don't have structure, I fall into a depression. Although, shit, I'm depressed now and I have all the structure in the world! Also side note: not glamorizing this busy NYC lifestyle. It is not fun. It is not healthy. Wow, am I talking too much? It's like you're my therapist or something. Lemme take a step back, ha!

MM: Omg no. I love it! Please talk about this as much as you like. I think it's all important, especially the reality that goes on behind the Instagram screen (poetry, I know). Because real talk when I first met you online, I was like wow! Look at her! Doing it all! Fashion! Rising star! It's so easy to project those sort of things online.

EZ: Yep, yep. Instagram is a ~facade~ amiright?!?! Lmaoooo!! In reality... I'm just a homebody/stoner/depressed/anxious/chronically ill/loving gal.

MM: Which is so much better! And realer! Is it odd to interact with so many people in Berriez and also the Innocence Project that are sort of living that facade, do-it-all life? I feel like fashion and law may have close ties; it's all very ~chic~ non?

EZ: YES YES YES. Everyone's just trying to do it all and take care of themselves. But who are we doing it all for? That's what I've been asking myself lately.

MM: Do you feel like this intensity affects your style, and how you dress at work or on Instagram (your other work)? 

EZ: Interesting question. I've never thought about it that way. I feel like Berriez has really really really helped me ~find my style~ which is like, middle school art teacher... Lol. Lots of color, lots of fun, lots of patterns. 

I'm a bigger gal, but I don't give a fuck if something isn't "flattering" per se. I come to my day job at the IP dressed like this too, since we don't have a dress code. And I am always getting compliments from my coworkers! Although they may think I'm a little nutty. Today I am wearing space buns, a red and white checkered long sleeve shirt, rhinestone hoops, vintage Levi’s, and these funny looking boots. Oh well. Did that answer your question at all? Ha.

MM: Yes!! Were you surprised when your own personal aesthetic caught on online via Berriez? Not because it's ~weird~ (to me... It is perfect) but because I'd personally find it so nice/scary/surprising if the style I'd curated, my look, resonated with people like yours does.

EZ: I guess, like, I never thought of myself as having an "aesthetic." I've kind of just always worn what I wanted to/who I've been inspired by. My friends though have always told me that I have great style and encouraged me to start a public Instagram for my outfits, but I've always been too shy. With Berriez, I can do that without showing my face!

MM: Aw, that is so sweet. And so what does Emma Zack, stylish person, wear on a first date? 

EZ: Hahahaha! I can tell you exactly what I wore on my first date with Aja. Which was three years ago, by the way! I would never wear this now. I wore tan Clarks, black opaque tights, a hunter green bodycon turtleneck midi dress (that really accentuated my curves), and a black bomber jacket. My goal was to show off my body in a modest way!

MM: Sensible. Sexy. So this would've been 2016?

EZ: Yep! Today... Hmm. I would probably still wear something to show off my body. I love my curves.

MM: Oh I'm a big show-off-on-the-first-date person. I wore the tiniest black dress on my first date with my bf. And it was also a turtleneck! I am just now realizing. I felt like it gave me that "I read books" vibe. 

EZ: Hahaha, yup! Lol. For me it was, "I listen to jazz."

MM:: Yes! Because you're a jazz singer, right? Also would love to hear about your perfume/makeup combo if you remember it! 

EZ: Yup! I sing jazz! That used to be my hobby, until I moved to New York and convinced myself that I wasn't good enough! Ha ha ha. Oh yes, I definitely remember it. I don't wear much makeup in general, so I was wearing mascara, concealer under my eyes, and maybe some chapstick! As for perfume, I was wearing Cannabis Santal by Fresh.

MM: What comes first for you, outfit or makeup or perfume? 

EZ: Outfit, always! Makeup, I don't know how to put on makeup, so I always just wear the same thing. Perfume, I rotate between the same three perfumes (that are all musky).

MM: Which are?

EZ: The cannabis one, and then these two perfume oils that I can't remember the names of.

MM: Haha it's ok! I live for musk. This is maybe tangentially related but it's where my brain is going... How do you stay authentic to yourself? I feel like as soon as I started working in fashion, I had this huge feeling of shame, that I wasn't dressing right or knew the right stuff. Do you feel that? How do you defeat it? 

EZ: I guess I don't feel it because I don't feel like I work in fashion? I mean, I suppose I do work in "fashion" or whatever, but the stakes aren't as high as working at a magazine or a blog or whatever! I just wear what I like at this point. Or what I feel like wearing! 

And, as I've gotten older and more comfortable with myself, I've started to give less of a shit about what other people think of me or the way I dress. Don't get me wrong though, sometimes I'm totally like, do I look insane??? If I go to an event dressed like this, will I fit in?!

MM: Yes! Those are my main feelings, as someone who used to wear a ton of color and print and has been shying away from it.

EZ: Meh. Sometimes I feel like Berriez to be more minimal, and I need to sell more earth tones and plain shit like most vintage shops do. But that's just not me, that's never been me. I'm a straight-up maximalist hahahaha! That's not who Berriez is or why people like it!

MM: I really admire that about you! And your business! And that you have a business, haha. 

EZ: Lol at me having a business.

MM: You do! You truly do!! Final question, since I know we've been chatting for a minute — how was your last first date? 

EZ: Welp, it was in a dark bar, and it was with a cute dude who I'm still with to this day! So, I guess you could say it was a good one. 😉

Would you date someone 15 years older than you? Glenn is 12 years older than me & I already think that’s slightly pushing it. Not that our age gap poses too many issues but, ya know.

Best field trip experience? Going to the one room schoolhouse was really fun for me. I loved dressing up in a dress & bonnet (both handmade by my grandma). And my mom was adorably extra and packed me a time-period appropriate lunch in a woven basket. It was so cute!

Have you ever been to New York City? Just once

If so, is it all its cracked up to be? No, although I was young and maybe I’d have a deeper appreciation for it as an adult. But overall, that crammed, busy city life isn’t for me. 

What is the most amount of money you’ve spent on a meal before? We spent $80 (including tip) on fucking Chinese takeout the other day. I have much regret lol. 

What museums have you visited, if any? Lots. Checking out museums are one of my favorite activiites! 

Have you ever had a group project and one of your partners bailed on you? I often insisted on taking over group projects because I refused to let my grade rest in the hands of slackers or idiots. 

What’s your worst traveling experience? There was this family trip to Florida that will forever live in infamy... 

Sims 1, 2, or 3? Why? I never played any of them. I think I tried to get into it at one point but computer games just aren’t my scene. 

Have you ever dealt with noisy neighbors or roommates? How did that go? My current upstairs neighbors apparently have a fucking bowling alley in their apartment. They are THE. WORST. I struggle every day deciding if I should try talking to them or apartment management about the noise level. 

Who was (or is) the teacher that gave you the hardest time in school? Teachers never really gave me a hard time. Oh wait, there was this social studies teacher in 8th grade who was a complete prick. I once corrected him when he said that Africa is a country and he chewed me out in front of the whole class. I’m still angry about it! 

Best muffin you’ve ever had? Wegmans chocolate chip muffins are ridiculous, man! Ridiculous!  Have you ever taken a woodshop class? Nope. That doesn’t interest me in the slightest.

How much time do you spend on Facebook, if you have one? Probably too much. I’m trying to distance myself from it a bit. 

What area of math are you best at? Worst? All of it. Even very basic addition and subtraction can trip me up. I’ve often wondered if I have the numbers form of dyslexia or something similar. 

How do you feel when you meet someone with the same music taste as you? It HYPES me up like nothing else.

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever seen outside of your house? Our current apartment complex gets frequent visits from the local police & fire departments. At least every couple weeks there’s an incident. Usually just a small fire (burnt food, I assume) or something like that. 

Do you believe in luck? Why or why not? Kind of. You can’t tell me there aren’t people who seem to have everything fall in their lap.

What’s the latest you’ve ever stayed up to finish homework/a project? I was actually good about time management during school. I might be one of the only one of my peers who never pulled an all-nighter. I prioritize my sleep!

If you don’t have glasses, how would you feel if you had to get them?

If you do have glasses, how would you feel if you didn’t need them anymore? I’m looking into contacts actually because I’m sick of my glasses

How many vegetarians do you know? A few, including myself. 

Have you ever considered going to art school? Nope 

Is there anyone in your life who consistently angers you? Yes but I won’t name names 

How quickly can you write an essay? I excel at essays but my process is a sloooow one. 

Have you ever had problems falling asleep in class? I’ve never actually slept in class but I have had issues staying alert and engaged. I’m easily fatigued. 

Have you ever been on the barrier or front row at a concert? Yeah but not any big names

Favorite episode of Spongebob? Pretty patties!! 

Do you have any silly/odd emotional connections to anything/anyone? Almost everyone and everything in my life, yeah.

How often do you take the train to go places? Only when I’m in Canada. I wish trains were a more common mode of transportation here.
