Why are filmmakers more inclined towards OTT platforms, than regular cinema?

The popularity of OTT ( Over-the-top) platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime is gaining a huge share in the Indian entertainment market. This is leading to a change in the approach of audience and content creators, causing them to turn over to these platforms that engage with major part of the industry.

Although DTH and cable TV are the more convenient options, over 50% smart phone and internet users today opt for OTT platforms like Amazon and Hotstar and Netflix. A majority of over 80% of such users have said to be opting for either fewer channels on television or are switching to OTT platforms. Hence the filmmakers are now broadening their prospects and entering the new space. Moreover, they’re thinking of low budget, but high content with the launch of OTT platforms. With all the younger generations now getting access to entertainment on fingertips, it has become easier for the filmmakers to provide content without the hassle of producing big-budget films and spending a ton on promotional activities. Hence, they are now considering web-series as an option to reach the audience.

In the year 2018, Amazon bought the digital rights of 13 highest earning films in the months of June and July. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highest crosser “Padmavat” was also picked up by Amazon Prime, taking up the streaming rights for an estimated price range between 200-250 million INR. Prime also released the film before the satellite's highest-earning partner “Colors”. Along with Amazon, another OTT platform Zee5 also emerged as a leading buyer of the highest-grossing Bollywood movies in 2018.

According to a report, India has the 2nd largest online video viewing audience. This audience is expected to reach 500 million by 2020 from 250 million in 2017. This is a huge number and is growing faster with each growing minute. Hence even big studios are focussing on online platforms than box office. Even well-known celebrities like Radhika Apte, Vicky Kaushal and a leading director like Karan Johar have also been taking active note of these platforms. Karan Johar has already launched a successful short Film on “Netflix” known as “Lust Stories”. Many other big star celebrities like Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui are seen in the lead roles of the popular show “Sacred Games” on Netflix gaining huge popularity among the younger generations.

And if we look at the current situation it is estimated that over 65% of the video streaming in India comes from the rural areas and is expected to increase in the coming years. There are currently 32 online streaming platforms and the market is expected to reach 5 billion by 2023. Of half a billion internet users over 180 million are active online video streamers. And the number is said to be increasing at a fast pace, with the younger generation hooked to Online Streaming. Hence, Filmmakers are now turning towards OTT platforms to gain the most advantage.
