Hey!! Just wanted to ask, if you know, were the Cherubs ever planned for Pesterquest? Or were they cutout? I know you used to only be the Music Guy, but I wanted to know.
short answer: no they were never planned
long answer: it was a really stupid joke for the pq twitter, which i think you maybe needed to be there to understand. i get asks about this a LOT i'll explain the joke for everyone if that helps.
in FRIENDSIM you go through each of the hiveswap trolls and then an after-story scene. in the after-story doc scratch makes you read all of homestuck. you then are thrust into the homestuck story. the first chapter is john. the second chapter is rose. these came out at the same time.
in the time between chapters, we would often release a teaser image with a silhouette of the character (whos that pokemon style) as a hint to who would be next. since it was dave, i thought it would be funny to make it look really shitty. eventually it settled on "what if the silhouette we showed wasn't even dave. what if it was an entirely different character and then we just put dave in the middle"
we had a non-artist draw a really junky looking silhouette of caliborn holding a gun. the spritework for pq was really clean up to that point so i thought if it looked absolutely terrible people would understand "ah, this isnt actually the character, they are doing a bit" it also doesn't make any sense to go JOHN > ROSE > CALIBORN. why wouldnt it be dave or jade? i thought this was an easy alleyoop.
we then released this image
Tumblr media
for some reason, to this day, there are still people who ask why we cancelled the caliborn route. there was never a caliborn route. anyway. thats the story of how i learned that over the top sarcasm isn't as funny as you think it is because some people are very sincere and you will probably hurt a very kind persons feelings

Anti-propaganda for Tedd (their name is misspelled in the poll) Verres because I am ASTONISHED more people on this very transgender website have not heard of El Goonish Shive (the webcomic from which Tedd hails).
For simplicity's sake, since Tedd is gender-fluid and prefers different pronouns in different situations, I'm just going to use they/them.
Note: I am pulling all this lore from the top of my brain so it may not be completely accurate. Reader beware
okay FIRST of all. Tedd starts out as a pervert. El Goonish Shive was started by a highschooler in 2002, and the author, Dan Shive, has matured greatly since then. Tedd is also a highly capable scientist (despite being a junior in highschool), and with the help of some alien technology (long story short, Tedd's dad works for a secret government agency dealing with magic and has been in contact with alien lifeforms), they craft the Transformation Gun (TF gun for short). This gun, well, transforms people. There are multiple forms that people can be transformed into, all of which are based off of their original bodily form. The Female Variant 5 form (the form that transforms anyone into a quite attractive lady) is the one that gets the most use. Of course. El Goonish Shive has been described as "the most perverted squeaky-clean comic on the internet".
Thing is, Tedd has been bullied. A lot. They are very androgynous, even in their natural state, and they get mocked for it a lot. They're not very comfortable in their own skin, so they like to exert control over their environment by way of the TF gun. Eventually, as their friend circle widens and their support system grows, they mellow out considerably (though they were never terribly vindictive in the first place) and become more confident in who they are.
As of the most recent comic, Tedd is at dinner with their father the government agent, the alien woman who is his secretary, and their girlfriend (for lack of a better term) Grace, a shapeshifting alien-human-squirrel hybrid.
I highly highly HIGHLY recommend EGS, even if there's a solid chunk of early installment weirdness while Dan was growing into his own as an author/artist. The characters are all very well-developed and have strong personalities, the magic system is convoluted but fascinating, there's all sorts of weird beings and cool spells and secret identity forms that may or may not change your personality, and it's funny as heck. Also, there are a ton of queer characters of all kinds.
Two notes, though:
One: Dan Shive relates very strongly to being neurodivergent (something he discovers over time; read the end notes on each comic!), and as such, the comic is VERY thorough. Arcs may take a while to pan out, and there are plot points from over twenty years ago that are still popping up today!
Two: EGS is a weird comic. I think the perfect exemplar of EGS's weirdness is the following line (note that this panel is from 2003; the art has improved considerably since then):
Tumblr media
Having read both, I would not hesitate to say that EGS is definitely less weird and less convoluted than is Homestuck. It's still weird and convoluted, though. But that's part of its charm, in my opinion.
I would happily add more information, but, in the words of the great Mr. Verres:

Cipher Academy ch.49 thoughts
[What is a "Yout?"]
(Contents: character design, author philosophy, Toshusai analysis)
ONE YEAR DOWN, BABY, THREE TO GO!!! It's been pretty touch and go, and probably will continue to be, but the longer it goes the more likely Cipher Academy is to build up a strong enough following to keep going, so fingers crossed that the volumes keep selling well!
This week's chapter opens with a beautiful color page showing off everyone's color schemes (except the teachers' for some reason) and a quick review of the major codes we've seen so far. Most of the hair colors are pretty standard, Koshibai and Umitsubame notwithstanding, but the biggest surprise for me has to be Dekiai, who I would have bet money was blue, but nope! She's pink! I guess water can be any color if you dye it, I just figured the idea would be for her to look like a melted Kogoe. Maybe they went with pink to obscure that a bit more or because they looked too similar in color?
Speaking of Dekiai, the jury for Toshusai's trial being several Dekiais with different pigtails and beauty marks was a really fun touch, I especially liked the one whose hair popped when she felt scandalized. The fact that the prosecution is named Hakuai and clearly doesn't have any shading suggests that she's all white, so I wonder if perhaps each Dekiai was a different color with a unique name. I'm also curious if they're all just the one Dekiai playing multiple parts, or if they're each their own unique AI. I'm inclined to believe the former, but who knows
Another cute detail, when the Dekiais call for a guilty verdict, their beauty marks turn into spades. Looks like someone read Homestuck
Onto the meat of the chapter, this is really the type of philosophy that Nisio Isin loves to talk about, huh? There was an entire chapter in Medaka Box about how there are no easy or right answers when it comes to ethics, and it could be argued that that was one of the major themes of Medaka Box as a whole. This chapter's suggestion that the concept of a person is a societal construct is certainly novel, and while it does go out of its way to paint Toshusai as the good guy in this scenario, it's also clear that we're not meant to necessarily feel good about it. Her actions freed slaves and toppled an oppressive government: objectively good! Her actions did also create child soldiers and result in half a million deaths: objectively bad. Reducing whether this was a good thing or not to the number of lives "created" and lost leaves...a bad taste in the mouth, I feel. Like, did Toshusai intentionally give weapons to the kids with the intention of creating an uprising? It doesn't sound like it, it sounds like she was asked to create a weapon a child could use, and then it happened to end up in the hands of children who needed liberation
Intention and consequence are only linked via action and otherwise have no bearing on each other; whatever Toshusai wanted to happen when she made the Gun Eye is irrelevant, the fact of the matter is that people died because of a weapon she created, at least that's how she sees it. Even if she did liberate slaves, it's not like she's a revolutionary who carefully planned out how to save them, she was a child who made a toy that was lethal. A weapon's purpose is to kill, a sentiment that I've surprisingly seen crop up a lot in Jump lately, and Toshusai knows that the only outcome that was ever going to come of making the Gun Eyes was that people would die
Of course, how Toshusai sees herself and how everyone else in the story sees her is only part of the equation - the rest is how the fans see her. Is she a liberator or a death dealer? Which is more important, the right to freedom or the right to security? I have my opinions on the matter, but I can't claim that my opinion is the objective correct one or that other readers will feel the same
I'm still endeared to Toshusai and I still like her as a major lead; she did something that helped people, but through a method that she resents, both because there might have been a way to bring about a peaceful resolution and because even if there wasn't, the presence of that method now means that more people are in danger in the long run. Even if the child revolution was a net gain of life and personhood, the Gun Eyes still exist and are still put in the hands of children, and probably not to overthrow their oppressors. Toshusai means to fix that mistake and prevent any further deaths by any means necessary, and that's a goal I can respect

okay let's see. uhh.
THE CASSES:
- castiel townsend: the man, the myth, the original bastard himself. w.bg player (albeit unwillingly). has not taken proper care of himself in weeks at any one moment. has homosexual relations with both his his gamerunner and his prize, which makes situations interesting quite a bit of the time. frequently not nice about things, mostly through joking about them both inappropriately and shittily. if he even sits down and thinks about his actions for .3 of a second it's over for him.
pretty extensive facial scarring from sucking ass at trying to blow up 357a.
- cassidy ???: cowboy iteration of castiel. MAY be a fraud. nobodys quite sure if he has the same connection to castiel that most cowboy iterations have to the source of their iteration. but oh well. he's the only cowboy around, and that's good enough. very cocky, very self-assured. believes what he is doing is right and proper all of the time. should not have been let loose with a gun, probably.
no noted scarring, but then again, ive no clue what he looks like naked. haven't mapped that out yet. shh.
- cassius ???: flinchite castiel. refuses to reveal what job he does at the compound itself, but he acts as a very good right hand man sort of figure. actually quite cordial, and not just in a villainous kind of a way. very put together. (this is, as with all casses, ever, a complete and utter lie. just one he's perfected.) actually on pretty good terms with cassidy. minimal death threats exchanged between the two.
missing one eye, which he covers with an eyepatch. no other noted scarring. i think.
- cassandra (has not even considered a last name): ex-compound cas. technically still in the compound. has never left the compound, and isn't looking likely to. but. minimal experimenation going on. so there's that.
capable of seeing all events in history, apparently, though without much rhyme or reason to any of it. every prediction she makes is inevitable (though not always irreversible). also the only cas to use she/her.
seemingly very docile and obedient, but with a decided cunning streak she's perfected the art of hiding in public.
- casper bofa (allegedly): an outsider to this whole scheme. not on good terms with any other cas iteration, but has convinced castiel into doing his bidding more than once. convinced he's able to disrupt the flow of time and pick his own fate. got a lot of hubris that is probably (definitely) going to catch up with him, but oh well. constantly doing his best impression of a mad scientist-esque disney villain, for some reason.
MELANIES:
the only iteration of castiel to share the 357a facial scarring- technically the only one who has experienced the future in which castiel goes ahead with it. which is technically a diversion from the normal timeline anyway.
- melanie "superwholock" lewis: w.bg player. somehow winning. internet streamer who liveblogged her challenges under the pretence of an elaborate arg, and is sososo scared all of the time at being found out. very emotionally intelligent, but cannot lie for toffee. fiercely loyal, and has a tendancy to be an asshole more often than not.
- mel "homestuck" lewis: ex-compound melanie and universal older sister figure. trying to catch up with the modern media kids seem to be enjoying these days, but doesn't wholly get it. tries to be a mediator, but has a habit of snapping at people occasionally, if tensions get too high.
- em "you are not calling me goncharov" no last name: flinchite melanie. technically? also punished melanie. somehow acing them both. very tired, very done with everyone. very, very good at fighting. runs a rather illegal pharmacy that depends off the flinchite funds to basically just give medication away for free. works as a hired gun- er, knife- on the side.

you said you would be okay with showing us the thought process behind your homestuck au designs is it ok to still ask about that /gen
oh my god YES i love infodumping OK i made quick like notes over the designs but ill write them down too in case they’re hard to read. This is gonna be a lil long so, it’ll be under this read more.
Tumblr media
OK fire things first, Gordon and Benrey were the easiest, so. When I start the trollization (lol) process for certain characters, the first step is always a symbol. (If its a fantroll the first step is theme, but characters Im turning into trolls already have their own things going on, so its all about finding a good symbol.)
For Gordon, it was insanely straightforward use of the lambda symbol, I integrated it in a few parts of the outfit, it was easy. Not a lot to say there.
For BENREY, I only used the INSIDE of the BM logo because I thought it looked like a helmet and I thought it fit them more personally that way. Using the whole BM logo would have just made it. Black Mesa. Not Benrey. SO! Little helmet looking thing. I thought it fit!
Tumblr media
NOW TOMMIE was so fun. I decided to use the alchemical symbol for Pyrite, or Fools Gold. This fit for many reasons.
The name Fool’s Gold was interesting cuz Tommy is considered something like that i guESS by the people around him, and he is associated with yellow (so like gold + i made him a goldblood SO.)
BUT pyrite was used in the 16th and 17th centuries to ignite the sparks needed to use guns! People thought it was gold, because it looks remarkably like it, so. To me that is like. An underestimated metal that actually packs a punch. Just like Tommy :)
The fact that it was used for guns also helps, since Tommy is the best with guns in the team! It all worked out.
Tumblr media
Dr. Coomer was also fun. He has my favorite design, I think. He was the hardest to pin down, but it all worked out when I found the alchemical symbol for Hour (as in time.)
Its a cute symbol and my first thought was that Dr. Coomer would,,,love it JDBDMFH but my second thought was the fact that Gordon relied (maybe incorrectly) on Dr. Coomer to tell the team how many hours they had left to reach the lambda lab! Dr. Coomer’s classpect was one of the first chosen so this actually also just happened to work out with that… Its pretty straightforward too.
I included the symbol in the little heart shapes of his horns (i love them so much), his belt, and a little bit of his coat with the rounder collar! The symbol also kinda looking the way I draw his hair is just a fun plus. So much fun to design. I really think it suits him!
Tumblr media
And then there’s Bubbie, who is probably second most straightforward next to Gordon. The alchemical symbol chosen for Bubby was the one for Hot Fire. Gestures vaguely. Yeah, that’s Bubbie.
Its all sharp triangles, so of course I included the symbol in their horns, but also in their vest. Its ALL triangles. subtle enough to just be a sweater though HDNDHD but. The symbol is there. It was perfect fit.
Tumblr media
So there is everyone. When I finish designing G-man, Forzen, and Darnold Ill write down notes for them too in case anyone is interested in those. For now this is all I have. Thanks so much for asking!! I love rambling about this junk. I put a lot of thought into everything I do SO JDKDJDM anyways yeah thanks!

self-ship/OC asks for whichever pairing's been stuck in your head the most lately!
5, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 19 (or as many/few as you'd like to answer)
Ahh I set myself up for this one didn't I? 😅😅
So in my defense, my anime boyfriends rn are Dirk Strider and Jake English from homestuck, but at this point their character traits in my mind are like six or seven degrees removed from canon, mostly influenced from the parts of fanon that I interacted with back in 2015 in the height of my homestuck era (tm)
And I'm a little starved for affection lately so I just like to imagine my giant teddy bear is a person I can snuggle with without the pressure of a sexual relationship because I'm asexual which is also probably why I think I might be poly too?
5. Who curses, and who reprimands the other for it?
We all curse, but Jake does it in his weird ass fake British work around way and pretends to be morally superior about it but we all know at the end of the day he's just as bad as the two of us. (Fun fact for lent this year my whole family gave up swearing for lent and agreed to put 50¢ in a jar every time one slipped and we raised about $60 between us all because traffic in Cincinnati is terrible.)
7. Who makes the other laugh more?
I feel like I'd be the one making them laugh, just because I've had a lot of people tell me I'm a very dramatic and emotive story teller, especially when I'm angry about something and it's been stewing for a few hours. (Any time a customer at work does something especially heinous, I get home and just *rant* like I'm on an episode of the office because it really helps get the bad energy out.)
12. Who's more protective?
As with real life I am all talk big threat but when the chips are down I'll probably be in a corner somewhere crying my eyes out because someone yelled at me, HOWEVER if someone is mean to any of my loved ones I get very nasty.
I'm kind of a Chihuahua.
Meanwhile Dirk has katanas and swordfighting and takes no shit. And Jake has guns out the ass. So who knows how that would go 😅...
19. Who's the better dancer?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
((also sorry X-man Friend I didn't have good answers for the others...))

9, 12, 13 for the smut asks!
9. How did you learn to write smut? Were there specific fics or authors that inspired you? Or novels/movies/other texts?
Definitely fics that inspired me, uhhh. God, I don't even remember when my first smut fic was written but -- and here's some Deep Lore. I actually used to run one of those NSFW anime prompt blogs for Haikyuu? Like it was my irl friend's and she was like...hey....I need some help with this....will you admin the blog with me? And I said yes. And I think that forged something in me, for sure. Certainly it's where I got the most practice writing straight sex, not that I've used it that much. I think probably like, old Bleach fandom, GrimmIchi specifically, is where I picked up a lot of stuff ages ago? And then when you hit Homestuck, you learn a LOT, very quickly. Stuff by Laylah on AO3 really hit it for me. My friend Ecto wrote a ton that's really good (ectoprince on AO3) if you like DirkJohn. Also this is quite recent but Wangxian fic really opened my eyes, I feel like I'm not necessarily good at focusing on the Bodies aspect, making the wanting feel insanely grounded and consuming, and that's a pairing where people are really, really good at it in general.
One of my other friends is also very talented at it but currently this knowledge is being applied to a mech AU Top Gun fic, so.
12. Who are your favorite characters/pairings to write smut for?
Whoever the blorbos of the month are, unfortunately, but I do like to put Fingolfin, Maglor, and Manwe specifically into Situations. I also love when the smut can be really weird, so Valar tend to lend themselves well to that also. Also Nanami JJK because I love him.
13. What’s the most surprising smut pairing you’ve written?
Almost certainly Ingwe/Manwe for the 2021 TRSB, in that I would never have considered it without that AMAZING art in the gallery, and it ended up being both incredibly fun to write and one of my favorite things I've written to date.

I just read Homestuck^2 again. The meat/candy dichotomy comes through in everything (Davebot's conception kinda feels like a blatant contrast to Dave's arc in Homestuck, hero's call and all). In the bonus content, Dirk even invoked the "reversal of entropy" thing that you indulged in back when you did hymnstoke. Homestuck^2 is still boring and bad, but it's a shame we may never get to see those ideas more thoroughly explored. With the way Homestuck plays meta? OH THE POSSIBILITIES, any thoughts?
They shoulda gotten me to write HS^2
I think I mentioned this in a previous ask, but my experience with HS^2 was reading the first update, finding it excruciatingly boring, and never looking at it again. I also felt like Homestuck got a perfectly fulfilling and conclusive ending with the Epilogues. All throughout Homestuck proper, there's this constant inescapable cycle of plot, literalized via the shitty circle of Paradox Space and Lord English's machinations wherein, and it's made increasingly clear that simply doing what the game expects and beating it is only what the game wants; it's not a tenable way to reach any kind of end.
After all, it was the trolls who originally "beat the game" by powergaming and bumrushing the boss, and that only led to a bigger game, and a bigger game beyond that, and a bigger game beyond that. When Karkat and crew bemoan that they fucked up by not doing the stupid frog breeding minigame, they're not talking about the stupid frog breeding minigame. They're talking about their inability to actually develop as people throughout the game. Frog breeding is the literal reason their game wasn't done right, but it's their personal stories that are the real, thematic reason.
Vriska exemplifies this theme the most. She wants to skip to the end, skip all the lore, find ways to win faster and better. And it's why she fails constantly. At least until Game Over, where a completely superfluous retcon (the Game Over timeline is perfectly salvageable given all the return-from-death horseshit Hussie had introduced by then--just give the Ring of Life to Jane and everything is honky fucking dory) brings Vriska back to life, she fixes everything during a three-year-spanning montage, everyone beats up some bad guys, et cetera et cetera. It's the ending you write if you've used up all of your life's energy during a four-year period of insane creative output and simply want the story to fucking end.
The Epilogues, where a somewhat regenerated Hussie could lean on some extra writers to handle a lot of the prose, ideologically bring Homestuck to the conclusion that makes sense for Homestuck. It doesn't matter that the Epilogues end with some dumbass new plot hook with spaceships and whatever-the-fuck. Actually, it does matter, but it matters because John is no part of it. John reaches the end of the story not by resolving some plot, but during that final scene in Candy of matrimonial reconciliation with Roxy. John has reached an ending, and yeah, there's some new adventure going on in the background, but to him, it's finally in the background. He's won his game.
Hussie logically understood this was how Homestuck had to end even during the rushed-and-gunned-it original ending. It's why the lilypad section exists, where everyone hugs it out and talks through their emotional issues and whatnot. A lot of people I know constantly bring up Hussie saying "real people don't have character arcs," but it's clear he was being facetious when he said that or babbling like he usually does, because the lilypad is just a way for him to try and tie up every character's arc in a few choice conversations. It doesn't work, because most everything said on the lilypad is predicated on three years of off-screen growth, so there's no actual throughline from point A to point B on most of the character arcs.
The Epilogues handle it a lot better. Hussie or whoever did the creative legwork said, "Wait, most of these side characters are kind of pointless and never mattered to the plot or themes," so instead of trying to give everyone satisfying arcs, he hones in particularly on John and a few other key characters while letting most of the chaff get embroiled in the latest dumbshit adventure. In both Meat and Candy, John grapples with becoming irrelevant to the "narrative." Literally in Meat, figuratively in Candy. But it's only in this irrelevance that he is finally able to come to deeper insights about himself. And that is what Homestuck has been about for a long time.
Early Homestuck is so orderly, so pattern-driven. Characters are depicted as template-based sprites in static environments and undergo the same collection of banal "life experiences"--fake names, instruments, weird parents, et cetera. John exits to get the mail and we get our first bit of thematic poignancy as he observes his suburban landscape and its bland conformity. He's the same as Dave and Rose and Jade with a different can of paint, really. Trapped inside a system that controls his every action, even though he believes himself to have individual agency. The system of the suburb is replaced by the system of Sburb, and while the stakes get bigger and the character customization options get more robust, it's still a system of control that dictates his every move. All of his actions are preordained, and if he does manage to deviate from his route it's a doomed timeline. Only one path is possible.
John in the Epilogues finally decides to just stop playing. This leads to his elimination as a viable narrative actor, but there's peace in that decision, peace in fading away and just living a life. His emotional peace is juxtaposed against the increasingly absurd narrative of the Epilogues whirling around him, and it makes that narrative seem even more juvenile by comparison. Which I think is the point. I don't think you're supposed to get excited by the narrative prospects of the rebellion against Jane "Trump Proxy" Crocker or Dirk's star trek with robot Rose. The Epilogues end on a cliffhanger, but it's not a cliffhanger where you want to know what happens next. It's a cliffhanger that makes you feel secure in the knowledge that for some, the cycle continues, but others are finally free of it.
As such, I doubt there's any possible way to make HS^2 good. You could clean up the writing, be witty and not boring, but the story will always feel ancillary. Hussie shoving it off on "the fans" is like a practical joke at the fans' expense, but given how HS^2 was cancelled abruptly, it seems most fans sniffed out the joke and, like John, were able to just step away.
Now that's the heart of Homestuck. The theme, the character, the emotional crux of it all. But on the other hand, it's telling to me how much the actual PLOT plot of the Epilogues, the one I just spent a bunch of time saying was "irrelevant" and "bad on purpose," explodes a conflict that has been simmering under the surface throughout all of Act 6; the conflict between Hussie and his readership. With Dirk as Hussie's stand-in, and Calliope as the readers', this conflict is brought to the most overt level it has ever been at throughout Homestuck--even more than when there was a literal Hussie self-insert prancing around. Seen in that light, John's decision to just... fade out of the fight, coupled with Hussie making such a big deal about "handing over the keys to the fans" for HS^2, seems like a narrative way for Hussie to cede that battle. He exited Homestuck just like John did. Sure, Dirk keeps fighting. But if Hussie's not there, Dirk is no longer Hussie. He's just some guy named Dirk.
And that's kind of the biggest conceptual problem with HS^2. Because yeah sure, John's done, he's resolved, but there are plenty of other beloved characters still mired in the horseshit who aren't resolved, and perhaps you could make something out of that, and give those characters each the finale they slogged through 1 million words to achieve. But how can you write the continuation of an author-versus-reader conflict when the author has given up? As soon as HS^2 begins, Dirk no longer functions as a proxy for Hussie. Hussie is irrelevant. So then how do you lend the metatextual elements of Homestuck^2 any value? Meta for the sake of meta is nearly always bad; what made Homestuck's meta elements so compelling was their mirror in the unique way the story was written and consumed. If the fans are now the author, an author-versus-fans plot loses its bite.
Well, maybe you could do it, but you'd need a new angle.
In 2015, shortly before I started writing Fargo on the Bavitz account, I made an account on ffnet where I pretended to be the Chinese professional League of Legends player LMQ Mor and wrote a fanfic for the children's fantasy series Redwall titled "Rot". It's not a particularly good story, I was shaking a lot of rust off after a nearly 2-year writing hiatus prior to that point, but there's a thematic undercurrent revolving around the fact that the author of the Redwall series, Brian Jacques, was dead. Redwall is a pretty ordinary black-and-white-morality series where the good guys always win in the end and everyone has a great big feast (or multiple feasts, or really they never stop feasting), and as you might imagine from my writing style that wasn't the story I was writing by any stretch. So the undercurrent of Jacques being dead is obliquely, metaphorically brought up in this sense of decay or rot, like the world itself without its benevolent creator figure is now putrefying, allowing into it decrepit elements that otherwise would not have been allowed within the series as a healthy organism.
I think for HS^2 to succeed, you'd need some metafictional angle like that, something that accounts for the absence of Hussie. If Hussie has given up and the fans now run everything, what thematic and metafictional impacts does that have on the work? What happens to this world without its original steward? Hussie handed Homestuck to the fans, and well, what value do the fans even add--or detract? What flaws of Hussie can they surpass, and what strengths of his do they fail to live up to? There's one memorable joke in the beginning of HS^2, the only memorable part of that first update, where Dirk receives the reader-provided input to "Stop writing Homestuck," which he promptly disregards. That's actually a funny joke. I think if you want HS^2 to succeed, you should lean into that angle much more. Make that angle fundamental. And answer the question: Why are we writing Homestuck?

one thing that really sogs my biscuits about the fandom handling of Homestuck^2 is how many people complain that the alpha & beta kids kinda do shitty things or bad decisions in this & the epilogue. as an example yiffany longstocking lalonde-harley's origins.
like lets be real. three of the eight watched their parental figures die at 13, two of which had fairly abusive parents (rose's mom, lets be real, was abusive, if not as much as bro was). one had a parental figure who was largely absent due to dealing with a evil space witch, and another was raised deep under the thumb of that dame space witch. two more never had one to begin with. one accidentally KILLED her own parental figure.
my point here is that at the very minimum these kids had REALLY fucked up lives!!!! and yes, they grew some awareness over their journeys, but thats not enough to truly "deal with" that kinda upbringing. throwing godlike powers on top of that is not exactly helping either!
but returning to my specific example, i think that...bear with me here....yiffany? kinda makes SENSE???? Her name and origin are BAD, DO NOT GET ME WRONG THAT KINDA NAME & TREATMENT IS ABUSE IN AND OF ITSELF. but heres my logic:
Jade, i think most people ive seen agree, makes fairly perfect sense. she grew up alone, wanting connection and family. everyone else settled into found families, and she felt like a third wheel to most of them. she wanted something her own, and as misguided as it may be, a child might be her best hope for that. she jumped the gun, but she was always pretty spontaneous. (most of her moves were based on premonitions, yes, but those in the skaia clouds are notably vague, so she had to fill the gaps a LOT.)
where most people have more of an issue in the parentage is Rose. And i get it. Rose has Kanaya, which was basically one of the two Big Ships of the series (that and Davekat, obv). Not only that, but she was into psychology, and was also often The Logical One, especially in the early and late game of Homestuck. All this adds up to her being Very Responsible about her relationships, especially one that shes so happy in as that with Kanaya.
But is she REALLY? I mean her entire childhood was a series of mind games with her mother, trying to passive-aggressively one-up eachother. Her psychology thing, to me, reads as a tool in this battle: if she can get some psych knowledge, or at least fake it, she can mess with her alcoholic mom better, and thereby "win". next, she goes about listening to dark powers as well as Doc Scratch, in an attempt to hack the game, ending up grimdark. Then, she ends up getting drunk to try and get closer to her deceased mother, and ends up *drunk* on the first date with Kanaya, almost FORGETTING IT ENTIRELY. Then in the postgame, she...basically just serves as another fighter, mostly making goo-goo eyes at Kanaya. Which isnt bad, obv, but i feel like ppl took it to mean she was "past all that".
which is horseshit. her entire character is that she wants to "hack" her way to success, be it in her relationship with her mother (before and after her death), or the game. She wants that extra angle, that extra piece of the chessboard, to use. and i think Yiffy was exactly that...toward Kanaya.
Kanaya, lets be honest, is an easy gal. When Rose was drunk for that first date, and forgot, Kanaya almost IMMEDIATELY forgave her. And even when stuff bothered her, like the grimdark event, Kanaya really just asked Rather Quite Firmly that she stop. And considering her previous crush was as dangerous and chaotic as Vriska, its understandable that shes generally cautious and polite. And, as we kinda see in Hiveswap, Jadeblood culture largely has that kinda approach. Meanwhile, Rose is used to relationships being constantly active, a battle of wits...and Kanaya isnt that. Kanaya is a grounding element in Rose's endless war against whatever.
But then, doesnt it make sense that Rose could tire of Kanaya's congeniality? That she might do something Pretty Wrong just to rile up her wife? Maybe even not-really-cheat-but-kinda on her? and then when Jade comes up saying she wants to have a surrogate mother...Well, isnt that just the perfect chance?
Then moving from there, the name. Both are doing something absolutely batshit for themselves, and they know it. Its the perfect "wrong but it feels so good" impulsive decision for both parties. So why not carry that impulse and maybe some alcohol into the naming factor too? And naming your kid "yiffany" is exactly the dumb kind of joke two impulsive adults who were incredibly online, and barely raised at all, would name their kid in the heat of a bad moment.
Then, of course, the aftermath sets in. They made their bad decisions, and they realize with them come A Decent Amount of Shame. So wrought with shame and still kinda feeling that impulsive wave, they ask for Jane to use her connections to put the child in boarding school, because thats far from Kanaya or any other prying eyes, and hey, boarding school is supposed to be good for kids right? right? And so off she goes to the Boarding School Fridge until we first meet her.
Jane's involvement in all this is i think also well-supported in-text, if still semi-unpopular, but ill include the logic anyways. Look, Jane's a classic case of reactionary, trying to justify her positions and actions defensively until everything breaks down around her and she has to confront the reality. this is why she did the whole "no i dont love you haha" dance re: jake. the initial moment was of course just her momentary fear of, who knows, rejection? the unbearable experience of being known? jake being too sexy? but immediately after she had to double down, and then triple down, and eventually she's just so frustrated, that the only way she can break her own cycle is by lashing out and abusing a substance (unwittingly, but yeah). this same behavior is whats at play here. she reacted to her fear of the trolls after being *literally mindcontrolled by one* and then doubled down by saying "no im just asking questions about their culture", then trying to control it, then trying to control it tighter, then attacking her own friends who go against her, and then starting a literal war against them, and fucking a clown she hates, and abusing her son, and eventually she has a shock collar on a girl who was abandoned by her birth parents, all in an attempt to control shit.
So i think that brings us all up to date on that specific case. but literally, when you think about Homestuck^2 and all the shit where "these characters i love wouldnt do [INSERT BAD THING HERE]" (lookin at you Dirk Defenders) think for a moment: maybe they fucking would??? none of them had good upbringings at all, and none of them can exactly go to therapy. imagine trying to therapize a god. would anyone even be able to be objective about it? no, all of them were left to their own devices, and GENERALLY have tried to do better than those who raised them, but often trip up, sometimes even in near-fatal ways.
And the most important thing to remember is: THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. MAYBE THE PEOPLE BEIN PIECES OF SHIT IS THEIR STORY ARC, AND THEY LEARN AND GROW FROM THEIR MISTAKES EVENTUALLY! or maybe they dont! sometimes thems the breaks. stories dont owe YOU what YOU want from them. dont be a child.

S'more details about the dream that I can vaguely remember:
*Sadly Chloe was still portrayed as Not Good in it :((( (at least I think. She was mad over getting a kinda crappy gift from her dad [well to her it was bad but it was like. A cute necklace I think? So-] and that's why the worm thing happened [yeah idk how it connects with that either, something about negotiations? Like she was literally getting rid of people who didn't go along with her demands or something?? I think???). Not like miracle queen levels but. Yeah.
*There were a lot of entirely unique characters. Including myself as one of the two main protagonists somehow, the other I don't really remember much about but I know it was a girl. There was also some bully girl named Olivia (which is the name of a girl in my school irl who is also kinda a jerk but iirc this character didn't really look like her so yeah idk) who I think had a Sabrina equivalent but I don't remember anything about that character
*More about the worm thing: pretty sure she could like project different appearances on herself or something. And like she was following me disguised as some kid with curly black hair I think trying to kill me in the lunch line. But I somehow knew it was her and ended up just, outing her to everyone else I think. *Also at first she looked kinda like Gamer (the akuma) and not at all like Chloe but then in the latter half toward the climax for some reason her appearance changed to look more like Queen Bee and idk why. Like I don't think it was even a purposeful transformation it just... changed in the middle of it all.
*The ending of the dream I think was still part of the show but it feels so unrelated that it's incredibly weird to talk about in conjunction but it involved us playing Minecraft at school I think and somehow it was changing the real life environment (I think it resembles something in homestuck but I forget and also I do not want to invoke any curses onto myself-). like we were doing interior design but using Minecraft. Yeah dream logic stuff. And then for some reason a ton of people showed up outside with guns and were trying to shoot the place and we were supposed to stay back, but I for whatever reason ran outside to see what was going on. There was a crowd there and also my dad in his surgical scrubs I think trying to talk them down? And the dream ended with me trying to run back inside while they started shooting at me. So yeah I have no idea what that was about-
Dreams are weird.

FUCK IT, DREAM SMP HOMESTUCK AU
but it's only half shitposts and there are actual Thoughts in there.
You don't need to have read the comic to understand because I tried not to spoil anything major, but it'd help if you knew basic stuff about classpects, SBURB and the hemospectrum.
disclaimer: i'm not a good pixel artist and this is my first actual sprites ever so please be kind to my weird pixels
Tumblr media
The Kids:
Tommy
Fundy
Techno
Tubbo
tommy, tubbo and fundy one of the kids because they're the kids in dream smp canon (with fundy being son of wilbur)
techno's there because i want to make a dave strider reference (haha get it because techno's name is also da-- *gets shot) and also because they are both coolguys except instead of using irony, techno has adhd
The Trolls:
Wilbur Soohte (fuschia)
?????? Ehrret (violet)
J????? Shlatt (purple)
Nihacu Niikki (indigo)
Skeppy Diamon (cerulean)
Quacki Tthiey (teal)
Philza Myncra (jade)
Dreame Wastkn (lime disguising as olive)
George Notfou (gold)
Sapphe Nahfpe (bronze)
Badboy Haelow (burgundy)
don't come at me saying only females are allowed to be jades and fuschias; gender is fake and this is an au
more of the AU and the talksprites are under the cut:
Tommy
Tumblr media
Lunar sway: Derse. Types in: Red
chaotic. the first person to be introduced.
when he gets introduced instead of the “Zoosmell Pooplord” bit, Tommy is initially going to be the name inputted but then backspaced it and decided that Tommyinnit was better and he was fuming until he’s named Tommy.
Gives me big Blood/Hope vibes. Blood because a lot of the conflict of the dream smp connected to someone breaking his trust or harming the things he cares about, Hope because a lot of the plot of the dream smp stems from Tommy starting shit based on his ideals and what he thinks is right.
the first to instigate fighting against the trolls
bbh contacts him once and tommy keeps cursing until he disconnects from frustration rip
wields Gunkind and his only strife weapon at the beginning is the Vlog gun. He has Gunkind as his strife specibus mainly because he looked up at schlatt and he imitates him.
Fundy
Tumblr media
Lunar sway: Prospit. Types in: Orange
it was his idea to play SBURB but only through Dream.
he talks to dream the most among the other trolls fwt stans getcha juice this is the rosemary of the session
dream’s the one giving him exposition about the game so that’s how he knows how to play SBURB.
wilbur trolls fundy once and instantly adopts him.
“You’re my son.” “How does that even work??” “I was one of the people who created your universe. It’s basically the same thing.”
Fundy relents anyway.
Techno
Tumblr media
Lunar sway: Derse. Types in: Pink
dave strider but dead-inside voice + rose lalonde english major vibes
he slices the text box when you try to name him "Dave " like in
Tumblr media
techno gives me time player vibes (contantly on the move. his skyblock series, his “stays in the pit” monologue,) but also rage vibes (anarchy,  the “theseus” monologue, political alignment is Chaos) alas i am not sure what class
uses Tridentkind and claims "it came from god"
it was dream, he accidentally transportalized one of wilbur’s weapon while he testing the transportalizer.
Tubbo
Tumblr media
Lunar sway: Prospit. Types in: Green
the jade harley of this session. the only thing keeping them from going apeshit. where would they be without him.
but also jade harley in a sense that he seems nice and wholesome but also don’t fuck with them they can mess you up
Heart/Life vibes??? someone good at classpecting help
i put them in prospit bc of the "tubbo third eye" instead of tubbo having a sixth sense or smth, they see the future from the clouds of skaia when they sleep
wields Stress-relieverKind at some point
bonus: everyone’s actual hair colors
Tumblr media
Ideas about the Trolls
no i haven’t done their sprites yet bc it would take so much time and i’m not even sure if people wanna see more of this au skjdkdsakdfkl,, but i have Design Ideas.
events of the dsmp revolution are just a FLARP session drawing parallels to how the homestuck trolls had a FLARP session that spoiler alert: destroyed friendships. dtrio, eret, will are involved. eret betrays will's faction and wilbur's still Bitter over that.
on the context of alternia (highbloods and lowbloods) lmanburg and dreamsmp have their roles SWAPPED.  the emancipation theme thing is completely gone since highbloods are in more power than the lowbloods (the dream team) .
wilbur made a faction called l’manburg because he wants a place where he and his fellow highbloods could make drugs vibe.they take a piece of land that was owned by the dream team. in normal circumstances, they shouldve stood down because lowbloods aren't supposed to start shit with highbloods (especially a group of highbloods that has the alternian heir among them)  but dream turned it into an activism thing about lowblood rights. the story plays as close as possible without tommy or tubbo in it (which is pretty hard ik but this is the best can do).
like in the dreamsmp revolution, dream kinda let wilbur do what he wants but this time he has more reason to because he’s in a lower caste. dream really only fought back when wilbur announced that he’d be building lmanburg on their land and calling it theirs.
eret betrays wilbur by supporting the lowbloods and wilbur and co. technically won but only because he finally called the drones in, as a reference to how lmanburg absolutely got crushed by the dream team in the smp but technically won. l’manburg keeps the piece of land and the dream team scatter away to find a new home.
wilbur soot's a fuschia because a) he's in a position that has a lot of power, b) yknow how he wrote a song about squids and his thing with sally… yeah.
eret's a violet because nobility!! dream looks down on him because he's ambivalent on fighting for lowblood rights when he's in a power to do so "you just sit there, and you look pretty that's it"
also like eridan he has a minor aesthetic mutation (herobrine eyes) that won't classify him as a mutant.
jschlatt is purple because it makes sense thematically because of the gamzee parallels (a. substance abuse b. if you know what happens in act 6, you know this already but spoiler alert, he ruins the main protagonists' lives) also he's a funnyman he deserves the clown caste
quackity's a teal because he’s a law student. moving on--
ok but for real it also makes sense thematically because he's the one who wrote the thing that tricked schlatt into agreeing also he gets manipulated by schlatt which also draws parallels to certain events in the comic
skeppy and bbh are BEST FRIENDS despite being highblood and lowblood respectively. initially, skeppy just wanted to bother bbh but they grew to be good friends in time. y’know like how they actually becane friends :D
philza minecraft is a jade because dad friend. also works thematically, because spoiler alert he gets to murder a seadweller for going batshit crazy.
he also god tiers early. he dies fighting his quick undead denizen (haha baby zombie) but the consorts of his land carry him to his quest bed because he’s treated them all so well.
dream was initially going to be another caste but then i realized that means i have to make his hoodie something other than green which is unacceptable so its a good thing the fact that he's a lime works out
dream was the one who thought of playing sgrub in the first place- initially only planned to have gogy, sap, and bbh in the session but then realized that they four won't be enough so he invited more into his session
he’s also the first to go godtier ez clap blind speedrun not sure what classpect tho
the only reason why dream avoided being culled at birth for being a limeblood is because his rng is That Good. he quickly picked up the fact that he’s not supposed to exist and masqueraded as an oliveblood and kept mostly to himself to avoid suspicion.
george is still colorblind but he has lazer eyes along with it instead. dream lives with him in the same hive since being a mutant means dream doesn’t get a lusus of his own (dnf fans getcha juice “and they were roommates”)
despite living in the same hive, he never really figures out that dream is a limeblood. possibly because a) he’s colorblind and when he sees dream bleeding he just sees yellow b) he’s just that fucking oblivious and it’s so valid of him.
sapnap’s a bronzeblood mainly because i know he’s the instigator of the pet war with tommy also because i associate him with the color orang in my mind so bronze it is
that’s the end of this long-ass post!! if you have other ideas PLEASE i want to hear them. i don’t know the other streamers i mentioned in here very well so if you have ideas that would be fitting to them like with classpect or lunar sway that would be GREAT.
the only thing i’m confident about in here are the kids’ lunar sways. i’m not an expert in classpects and homestuck lore so there’s that too!! i just wanted to make this post because adhd means that the idea wouldn’t shut up until i finished it. This initially started as a single shitpost edit of tommyinnit talksprite but then the hiveswap 2 trailer came out and that means i have to combine my two hyperfixations.
also i have ideas about potential quadrants but idk how much of that is breaking some streamers’ boundaries about shipping (even the non romantic quads such as kismesistude, morallegiance and auspisticism) so i decided not to include it.
edit: apparently people want more so i made a discord server as a place to brainstorm!! please pm me to join!

Re:the characters are the authors slaves - I think it's notable that Doc Scratch, dressed in lime and white, and whose head is a white shell containing the skull of LE, is rendered an inanimate puppet next to Andrew Hussie, the only character in Homestuck portrayed as being actually white. (Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff are fictional, the tricksters are a temporary transformation, and Lil Cal is himself a puppet and also whitewashed from his original appearance in Hussie's comics.) After sustaining too much physical abuse, he cracks and releases Lord English, who you've connected with liberated slave imagery (broken chains and such), and LE promptly kills Hussie and takes over the story himself. I think this could be playing on the conservative anxiety that when oppressed peoples become liberated they might themselves become the oppressors out of some desire for vengeance.
I'd guess that Caliborn relegating the "main" narrative of Homestuck to intermissions is also a play on this sort of thing.
Tangentially: I was in the Rhodesia tag getting a feel for things and that whole Bush War seems to have acquired a memetic status among people interested in white nationalist militancy. Lots of gloating over the failure of Mugabe's land seizure program, initiated several decades after the revolution, which took land from white farmers and gave it to black farmers -- this seemingly caused a subsequent drop in crop yield that kickstarted Zimbabwe's inflation woes, implying the black farmers were at a significant scale incompetent opportunists. But the tag also contained snippets of a counter-narrative that resembles the Irish potato famine a bit, where corruption in the Mugabe regime allowed for exports in excess of what the country could sustain (eg Mugabe's wife had a lucrative milk deal with Nestle), leading to a dependence on imports which in turn led to an accumulation of debts that officials tried to pay by printing more money. Something to look into, I guess...
Anyway the main memetic image of the Rhodesian army itself seems to be "white boys in short shorts with guns", which gave me whiplash for Jake reasons. Like the shorts are already associated with colonialism via their derivation from Tomb Raider, but now I guess I'm wondering if short shorts were widely emblemic of the British presence in Africa at some point. Saw another meme about Rhodesian soldiers using black-face to infiltrate enemy camps, playfully subtitled "White Boy Summer"

fnaf? (obligatory) for the meme
also homestuck?
blorbo (favorite character): i am so obsessed with michael afton. when i learned the player character of sister location was the shithead brother from fnaf 4 and the son of the purple guy my third eye opened and i got so invested in the series. mike did that.
scrunkly (my baby): HELPY helpy is my angel and i love him. seeing him brings me joy. in pizza sim when you fuck up the ballpit minigame and helpy breaks his back i cry laughing every time
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): i think all my faves are probably properly rated and appreciated. except like. the entirety of fnaf 4. (yeah yeah i know everyone thinks the nightmare animatronics are overdesigned and "not scary anymore" because of it but also i think that most people agree that 4 is the scariest in the series so. which is it. i see Nightmare and i piss myself. what do you want.)
glup shitto (obscure fave): Plushtrap. not necessarily as like. his own character or anything but i think in the context of fnaf 4 plushtrap can hold some really interesting metaphorical weight. like... youre playing as the son of a serial killer, and there's a part in the game where you can be spared some torment if you're able to perfectly anticipate the movements of a monster??? Hm.
poor little meow meow (“problematic” fave): they should give gregory a real gun and he should get to shoot as many animatronics as he wants.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): im putting william afton in the plinko as we speak
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): at the bottom of the plinko is the gate to superhell but it does nothing. he always comes back baby!
for homestuck:
blorbo (favorite character): DAVESPRITE. look im a big dave stan. all versions of dave. alpha, beta, candy, meat. all of them. but davesprite is very special to me. the original blorbo. imagine leaving behind your doomed timeline so you can stop past you from making your same mistakes and then you just have to watch a different version of yourself succeed. and also youre a bird now
scrunkly (my baby): HARRY ANDERSON EGBERT. i love john and roxy’s gay ass musical theater son. what a cute guy
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): Yiffany Longstocking Lalonde Harley. a lot of people hated her but a lot of people in the homestuck fandom are filled with hate and couldnt stop consuming a piece of media they didnt like. i loved Yiffy and i wish i could have seen what her deal was.
glup shitto (obscure fave): Tagora Gorjek, from Friendsim! this one should come as no surprise to people who played friendsim lmao. of course i love the slimy unethical lawyer with “used care salesman” energy. i also liked the hot clown. also unsurprising
poor little meow meow (“problematic” fave): I really liked HS^2 Dirk! I know a lot of people were Big Mad about it and thought it was reversing all his character development from HS, but personally i found him really grating in HS and really compelling in HS^2. Like. idk realizing/deciding that the thing that will save your whole universe is someone needs to be a villain and youre the only one really qualified to do it, salvation through damnation, i will martyr myself by never letting anyone know im a martyr. its good shit. i love that.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): I really love Eridan and I really love Equius but i also wanna put them each in a jar and shake them around
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): I hate Caliborn, and not in a fun haha way but like he genuinely made me so uncomfortable that I stopped reading Homestuck for like 9 months.

the kids: and if they have a braincell or not
BROUGHT TO YOU BY MOD GRAY AND MOD ROX
after some CAREFUL debate, thoughts, and sleep-deprived keysmashes in the discord chat, we have come up with these conclusions
john: no brain. no idea how to use it
rose: does she have a brain? does she know how to use it? yes but actually no
dave: has a braincell. knows how to use it. but, under any circumstances, will not do so
jade: has a braincell. knows how to use it
jane: has a braincell. knows how to use it but also prone to misusing it
roxy: has TWO whole braincells!! unfortunately no one is aware on what they do or if they work or not
dirk: has a braincell. uses it in the DUMBEST OF ASSEST WAYS POSSIBLE
jake: has a braincell. doesnt have a single fucking CLUE on how to use it
i need help from the smartest person around here. who do i go to?
1: jade. most trustworthy, can most likely help u w anything. if not;
2: jane. a little Less helpful but not terrible. is actually p smart and could prolly bullshit her way thru stuff. if not
3: roxy, hope the two braincells are functioning. if not
4: i hate to give dirk such a high position, but dirk. itll be a STUPIDASS solution but a solution nonetheless. but u dont want that so
5: rose. if you can sift thru her 12 pages of prose and thinking u could prolly just. make a solution from that urself. if ur Jared 19 and cant read
6: dave. similar to rose, except its 12 pages of rapping rambling and irony. could still figure out a solution from it. maybe. if not
7: Jake. he might not know how to use a braincell but he has one so he could completely stumble upon a solution. just gotta help him out a bit
and last but not least
8: john. we love john a lot but do not go to him. he wont know. like at all
ELABORATION.
most of them HAVE the braincell cause yknow most kids in homestuck were straight up supergeniuses with their fucking robots and their psychology and their sentient-robot-literal-life-creating-computer-science but the thing is they have absolutely no fucking clue on how to USE the goddamn braincell. they have it, sure, for example dirk being able to create a sentient ai, but he doesnt know how to use it, because jesus fuck, he just put himself into a situation in which he made a sentient ai
they HAVE the braincell but also dirk eats straight up teabags
roxy is an AMAZING hacker and could beat sollux after she learned alternian. but also they cant do directions for shit
well actually dirk may have been a bad example considering that he does technically know how to use it he just uses it in the stupidest fucking way possible. better example is jake he FULLY has one example being the robot bunny he made he just literally doesnt fucking know how to utilize it. man would aim a gun at a metal robot who hes fought for years and say "haha this will work!"
see the thing is. dirk uses his braincell to put himself into bad situations, which is inherently not using the braincell in of itself. technically? incredible use of the braincell, goddamn. morally? you are a FUCKING DUMBASS
jake has the POTENTIAL to use the braincell like its right there. with just a little commitment and time and effort he could be so fucking smart. but hes just. he just kind of ignores that and avoids it and so he HAS the braincell but he doesnt know how to use it.
jane fully has the braincell and usually uses it well and knows how to do so but uh. she can lose herself at times. usually quite uncommon. occasionally she will just straight up forget the answer to 10 + 10. these are few and far between however
roxy. roxy HAS braincells. theyre there. but theyre in a constant fluctuating state so neither she nor anyone else knows if theyre going to be working or not. HOWEVER, when they are, she knows how to use them and goddamn does she use them well
john? yeah no everything is just breeze and wind up there he doesnt have it. sorry john
rose TECHNICALLY has a braincell and HYPOTHETICALLY she knows how to use it. she likes to THINK that she uses it. technically? she has one, as in she sure can use it to be smart and verbose and know things. morally? fuck if she knows and fuck if anyone else does
dave DOES have a braincell and he KNOWS how to use it like the guy is smart. HOWEVER. he deliberately CHOOSES to actively ignore his smarts like if he just used the braincell for a little bit he'd know a lot of shit but like its like he just ignores that both the braincell and the knowledge on how to use it is there altogether
jade? shes the smartest. please go to her she is literally one of the most knowledgeable people here shes trustworthy
honorable mentions:
kanaya has the braincell but only in Certain Cases. you go to kanaya for certain things Only and it's up to you to figure that out
karkat? karkat has half a braincell. if you can trudge through all the shouty shit theres a half baked plan there but it's also a really Stupid half baked plan. like hes trying but. only makes it halfway
terezi? terezi doesnt seem like she has the braincell. shawty eats chalk and licks anything and everything. but she DEFINITELY HAS a braincell and uses it when she NEEDS to (like when she told john to fix the fuckin timeline.) Rezis braincell use is a SURPRISE but not an unwelcome one
(with terezi LIKE DAVE she has one and fully knows how to use it. however unlike dave instead of like deliberately avoiding using her braincell she lures people into a false sense of security by pretending she doesnt have one)
vraska has a braincell. it's there. but does she use it? thats truly the question. it's kinda a dirk situation where she has a braincell bu#t uses it stupidly. like. shes trying her best, a villain clad in blue clothes, but also. shawty what
all via mod rox
aradia may be our first case of fully knows how to use a braincell but doesnt exactly. have one? at least its not always present. she is just fuck ar0und and find 0ut :) like charcoal said. it is in the back of her mind only
sollux has a braincell and knows how to use it and fully does not want to. he just does not want to deal with it. sollux? sollux has 2 braincells same as roxy. it's his thing. UNLIKE roxy however solluxs braincells are constantly firing. he is not smart tho. they're firing but he's also like dave where he IGNORES it
solluxs braincell situation is so complex and he does not want to understand it. rose looks at him like :iamlooking: i want to psychoanalyse you. however he just wants to fuckign lay on the couch and zone out for 12 hours is that so much to ask
MOD ROX ADDITION: gamzee is no thoughts head empty however sober gamzee is FLOODED with braincells and that's why hes angry ok gnight

Why C!Wilbur and Dirk Strider are the same character: a thread
I said I would never touch Homestuck again, but this has been plaguing me for hours. This will be in bullet point sections because this is just my train of thought.
Personality - They both act confident and sure of themselves to the point of egotism as overcompensation for crippling self hatred - They are laid back characters and often act as the straight man towards their more chaotic and high strung peers. - They are born leaders and have a strong desire to be in control of situations. - If they are not able to be in control they will eventually start taking it out on the people around them regardless of whether they intend to. - They have a strong interest in a particular creative field, which acts as a motif throughout their character arc (Wilbur with music and Dirk with robotics.) - They both have a distinctive signature hairstyle and have a strong association with hats - They are both extremely introspective to the point where they often don't communicate with those around them.
-They're both extremely pretentious
- They need a shit ton of therapy but never ended up getting it
(This is long as hell, the rest is going under a read more)
Relationships
- They have a younger brother figure who looks up to them a great deal. (We all know the parallels you can make with Tommy and Dave but I'll just lay them out again. Hot headed word vomity blonde boys with red baseball shirts, music disc motifs, a somewhat naive best friend who is often treated inferior to them by the antagonist/narrative itself associated with the color green, and a huge hero complex also pushed onto them by the narrative itself.)
- Their younger brother figure has complicated feelings towards them due to being in close proximity to them while they were at their absolute lowest mentally and has trauma related to the experience. (Bro and Pogtopia Wilbur are in no way a one to one comparison due to Bro having a disconnect from Dirk while Pogtopia Wilbur is literally just Wilbur. Also, Bro is much worse than Wilbur ever was, he was extremely physically and emotionally abusive towards Dave in a way Wilbur never even got close too.)
- Wilbur and Dirk have a strong need to help their friends improve themselves and act in a way more fit to how they want them to be. This is due to their need for control and is not inherently malicious, but can end up being obnoxious at best and slightly manipulative at worst. This can be seen in how Dirk tries to teach Jake to be less naive and how Wilbur tries to teach Tommy to be less rash.
- They both have a somewhat distant father figure who is seen as a great hero in the eyes of many. This figure lived centuries before they were born, only in Dirk's case his father figure wasn't immortal and he was a genetic clone of him.
Alternate Selves
- Alternate selves are a strong underlying motif in both of their arcs.
- In Dirk's case, he has many literal alternate selves. In Wilbur's, he only technically has one but he has been split up into alternate selves through Tommy's perspective, the person closest to him.
- This is more cosmetic, but they both have an alternate self that is a ghost (brain ghost dirk and ghostbur.)
- Dirk's alternate selves (or "splinters, if we're going to use the homestuck term) are a more direct reflection of himself than Ghostbur is to alivebur, but they show how other people view them and how they view themselves.
- They both feel disdain and resentment towards their alternate selves, (in wilbur's case a lot of this is shown with ghostbur's feelings towards alivebur,) going back to their self hatred.
Relationship towards the narrative
-As much as I dislike the Homestuck post canon, it's still a part of Dirk's story worth mentioning that parallels Wilbur. This section is comparing late season 1 Wilbur to Ultimate Dirk.
- They are both characters that often break the 4th wall and seem to have somewhat of an awareness that they are in a story.
- Due to their need to be in control, they often manipulate the story to stay relevant within it. This can be seen in how Ult. Dirk takes over the narrative in the epilogues, and how Wilbur decides within the story to take over as the villain.
- Once they are unable to be in control anymore, they choose to die as a way to end their character arc within the story and to leave behind a legacy.
- They’re extremely obsessed with meddling, Wilbur came back from beyond the fucking grave to meddle.
Also, you can’t tell me that Dirk Strider WOULDN’T name his crossbow chekov’s gun. He’s that bitch.
