Adiós Avalon | Day 2: Best Foreshadowing

I’ve never realised Merlin’s small smile in the last gif but now that I have, I can’t stop thinking about how Merlin must have felt about Excallibur. The sword that helped them save Camelot from Morgana’s hold twice, once in Merlin’s hands and once in Arthur’s. The sword that helped Arthur defeat Mordred and Merlin defeat Morgana. The sword that was Merlin’s sword as much as it was Arthur’s. Their sword.

He looks down the blade twice, glancing over it’s inscription, smiling; because he knows now after learning under Gaius that the inscription reads “take me up, cast me away”. He remembers Arthur, how even though Merlin might cast him away today, he will come back to him one day, when the time is right.

And when Merlin casts away the sword, Freya’s hand comes up to catch it; a beloved who had come back from the dead for his sake. His breath catches and his chin lifts up. He watches as Freya takes the sword into the water, her mere presence in that scene being a promise to him. Arthur will come back as I did. Because of you. Because he is noble. Because even above Albion and its needs, he will want to repay all you have done for him.

Okay but about your Excalibur gifset and your tahs - it just made me think of "two sides of the same sword," and how yes, that made me laugh but also, there's some deep meta in there about the symbolism of swords and destiny and the battle for Albion, and how Merlin cast it away one more time, for Arthur to take it up again when he returns and now I'm spiralling.

#also i like to point out that the soundtracks for when arthur pulls out the sword and merlin casts away the sword are the same #and also the format of the last scene of the show - gwen's queenship + merlin waiting - is also similar to when arthur pulls out the sword #it swells to a crescendo. stops. and then starts again into an ending #and i like to connect it to how freya - when she catches the sword - reminds merlin of a loved one who 'came back from the dead' to help him #and that gives him a little bit of hope in the truth of kilgharrah's statement (just see merlin's face when freya catches the sword) #and then the music at the end of the episode also speaks of hope #because just like arthur pulls excallibur from its rest #arthur will return from his rest too #merlin meta
