omg omg omg where to start!! i could write an entire wiki of obnoxious headcanons!! How about something silly and small, like family and upbringing?

I headcanon Mandrake to have what could be considered as relatives back in the realm of daemons. This realm is divided in main fractions depending on alignment, clan and arcana. Mandrake comes from a fairly common circle with no major entities that impact the human realm, basically the daemon version of commoners. He's referred to as "Mandrake" in the human realm, but he's not the only Mandrake - daemons know how to differenciate, and it kinda works like middle age Europe in the way that your denomination will mostly depend on context. In his case, if a relative wants to specifically refer to our Mandrake, they'd link him to the notion of humanity due to his choice of living in the human realm.

Our Mandrake was born as a Mandrake daemon because his alignment is linked to the Mandragora genus of plants. Mandragoras (and the whole nightshade family in general) have been present in the human cognition for centuries through traditional practices of magic and medicine. The tropane alkaloids contained in mandragoras have a delirient hallucinogenic effect to the human organism.

Mandrake doesn't have a biological parent, he was simply spawned out of the grounds of some circle of Hell. Due to him being a Mandragora, it was an agonising process for himself and everyone involved. Daemonic entities are known to endure a form of intense anamnesis at birth, during which they experience the entirety of the emotions that they will go through in their (supposedly infinite) lifetime. I feel like, if on the "right" side of tiktok, being autistic/adhd/audhd has been made out to be something quirky and fun and "im hyperfixtated on sharks!" When, quite frankly, that is not the case

And, with that wave of content, people have also started posting videos that contain messages like "Wow I didn't know (blank) was an autism/adhd/audhd thing!" Which is sending a message to peoples brains that start to spiral into "am I (blank)? is this (blank)?" where, then, the algorithm targets the user with posts about being audhd/etc.

And what makes it worse? Short-form media causes damage to our attention spans, critical thinking skills, and overall brain function (which can be reversed if you cut out short-form media !!!! do not fret)

it. intrigues me. because the way the tiktok algorithm coaxes people into a genre of video ("omg (blank) is audhd!") and manipulated their mind into mush is almost akin to the grooming rqs do on a daily basis

are the pathless and abzu related? yes, and this connection is way more important than people give credit for (i will be rambling now)

visual cues are everywhere; the beheaded shark statue right at the start of the game, the purification process and the spirit realm architecture all nods to the previous game as the shells and the locked door at cerno's domain are literal imports from abzu, which are all sweet references present in the pathless

everything that concerns the spiritual realm has a touch of abzu (pantone abzu blue when)

i'd also add that i have autistic urges to just write about how the pathless feels like this result from accumulated knowledge/experience from past Nava games - the pathless has both the 'myth of creation' and the journey of the hero combined in order to tell this lil story with these silly characters (i see it all as if giant squid team woke up one day and said "what if we made like a fancy fanfic yknow" really best decision ever), however knowing myself it''d just feel like nonsense rambling (even worse than this) and a bit off topic, but i had to mention or my skin wouldn't stop itching

anyway back to the two games -

i have this recurring impression that abzu allegories and symbolism are woven in the fabric of reality in the pathless - it's not about them directly, but are foundational for whatever is being told here and now

you cannot, in full consciousness, tell me that these are just easter eggs in the pathless that giant squid introduced because it's a past title from the studio; not when there was giant effort in blending the two games sensibly - abzu is brought up in the symbolism, the color palette (red/blue), in the environment, and it's even present in the soundtrack

in short, tying the universe of the two games together was intentional

but despite visually tied, it still made no sense to me; ok we share the color palette, we wander around with the help of a tall one, we defeat the bad one, what else there's to it? is it just the start of the giant squid MCU? giant squid cinematic universe? or gaming universe? (i feel stupid)

regardless, as i answered the question to how, i wanted to understand why - and to make sense out of it all, i resorted to a feature unique to the pathless: written text

what is so important to tell the player that you need written text, something you were avoiding in all your past games but that suddenly you bring back out of nowhere to tell a story in a way you havent done before? i can just assume some topics were too necessary to just left it implied (at best), or never explained (at worst)

one of the reasons i have written this blog post until this point (the main reason, actually) is that i feel there's a bit of an overlook of an essential part in the established the pathless n abzu crossover (can i call it that?), something that permeates everything, but it's not really visible in a literal way

as i played the game, godslayer perspective and motives stood out - they are the focus of a good part of all the tablets and dead people's memories - and as i dived deeper into the abzu connections (pun not intended) certain lines got too remarkable:

so,,, godslayer deems this world broken because it's made out of pure chaos, ok i guess it makes sense uhhh wait wait im having flashbacks i have seen this befo-

uhh oooooohhh ok ok get it i can see some parallels ughhh woooow just wow omg

the underlying factor here is that chaos is origin, foundation for both games universes (tho we can all see that at this point it's the same universe)

in abzu, by ordaining chaos the diver brings back life; in the pathless the ordained chaos, the one that constitutes all life, is at risk because someone decided that having everything made out of (essentially) chaos wasnt really suitable for the second industrial revolution i guess

note: if you know nothing about abzu i recommend reading this post cause it explains a bit about what chaos means in abzu, hence it's relevant to the pathless too

and understanding the chaos that impregnates existence as a whole is central in the pathless, which brings us to another focal point the game brings up: religion

you see religion a big deal in the pathless in the sense that it defines factions; you pick a side, and it's what drives the line of action of almost everyone in the island - the pathfinder quest against the tall ones, the godslayer followers vs the tall ones followers, entire communities dedicated to their local gods, and so on

superficially, it's easier to go to the "bad vs good" route where godslayer must be defeated to keep the order and the light and tall ones good guys whatever, the problem of this line of thought is: too much black and white and no gray to be seen

the pathless final message speaks about decision making: you are free to trace your own path (and this message is reinforced through game design and the title and at the final boss fight, you can name it) however, here lies the detail: similar to the chaos surrounding us, it goes unnoticed that the will to take a determined path comes from within

that's why religion is a hot topic in the pathless, it's what allows people to trace a path in a chaotic world, literally

the myth of creation - the eagle mother, the branch, her children - in itself is a form of understanding reality, religion - prayers, sacrifices, lines of conduct, contemplation - is also a form of grasping the real, and from this understanding, this particular view of the world, you are invited to take action; you cultivate the land and you build temples dedicated to your god

you take action based in what you believe, and you can see it better in the dead followers you can commune with through the island, they are fierce in their beliefs, which leads them to make a stand or fight back

it also stands out how the tall ones are imbued with negative traits; nimue shifts moods like summer rain, kumo is terribly jealous and childish, sauro despite everything will resort to violence, cernos is too shy, heck even eagle mother as gentle as she is let atrocities took place before any meaningful action was considered

all the tall ones have their virtues and imperfections because in the end they are also made out of chaos, essentially they are not that different from any tree on the plateaus; but, as the tablets about the masks state, they see things beyond this realm, and with this knowledge they try to guide those that dont see it - it's like this for their followers, and hunter is also guided by them

godslayer is no different, he took a path lead by his beliefs, beliefs those that reject the idea of having life from chaos, which lead to his obsession of fixing what he deemed broken; from his perspective, he suffered in the hands of the tall ones and their followers which made him believe that anything of their nature was treacherous - he failed tho, failed to understand that a single path would lead to perpetual suffering (as some memories states, "i was not meant to bloodshed"), which was a fate his followers had bittersweetly tasted

in this scenario, hunter is special: she's an outsider, she doesn't comprehend her mission just yet neither knows those lands; she's facing chaos in its pure form and in order to make sense of her new reality, she takes the eagle mothers advices; upon taking on the trials of the island she witnessed chaos in its many forms, and she assimilates it, not good nor bad but a 'in between' - that's why (from my understanding), on purifying the godslayer final form, her eyes glow in bright blue not because she's some 'declared since birth' allied of the tall ones, but because it signals purpose, she understands the chaos, the one that causes life and death, and she embraces that view from within and translates it into strength to fight back and endure

there's not a single creature in this world that doesnt feel lost and be it whatever creature - human, tall ones, demons, animals, everyone is trying to make sense of this confusing world we live in, be it through any path at hand - and religion is just one of the possible ways in the sea of infinite available paths

as hunter explores deeper into the island, she bonds with the tall ones but make no mistake, she's not really a faithful follower - and she doesn't need to be - cause she has the understanding that the tall ones represent this organized chaos necessary to the flux of life, she respects them

pathfinder, unfairly treated, will look at the tall ones and see just lies, refusing their guidance, he will strive for a new path not taken before and ignore any previous knowledge about the world, he will build up a single vision for a brand new reality absent of chaos because that's how he was conditioned to see and absorb the world around him

(and that makes godslayer feels even more tragic, having the possibility of seeing the world through new lenses by wearing the mask of the ancients yet he persisted in his views and ignored the reality as it was - chaos neatly woven - perhaps out of hate and sorrow for all past injustices; even in the end he resisted to accept the world that nurtured him, as he too was made out of chaos - and for that he's forgiven)

you and i can both worship sauro, but in the end we will look at the surrounding chaos from different perspectives and i will decide that pottery is the way to go while you see the sword as the suitable option; as the truth stands, this is a pathless land - there's no defined answer

the pathless, beyond the 'pathless land' lesson, has something more to tell - that perhaps the path is already established and to you is given the choice of going forward that path or re-evaluate and change directions;

if i had to define the pathless i'd say it's about what touches the eye and where you rest you hand (which can also explains why the eye is an ever present image throughout the game); through perception you grasp the world around you, you create your views and based on it you take action - will you release the bow string? will you strike with your sword? will you cultivate the land? or will you shed blood? what have you seen that made you act like this?

ahhhhhh, another empathy rant. Mostly about my experiences with high empathy, romanticization of empathy, and some issues that come with being hyperempathetic based on my personal experiences. Random thoughts basically.

I saw someone say empathy is a hindrance (from someone low empathy, it was lighthearted) and honestly...yes? Omg yes it is. Like I appreciate my empathy, I like being high empathy since it can enhance my enjoyment of media, help me to understand others in a way that works for me, add to who I am, and definitely allows me to connect with fictional characters in an especially unique way that most neurotypicals cannot (I say specifically neurotypicals as this is added in by my being autistic.)

But like. Oh my God it's emotionally exhausting. Part of my trauma comes from how I could understand the abuse my friends went through and picture myself in it (I also have an incredibly good mind at having pictures, I know not every hyperempathetic person has that) and leads me to taking on their feelings as my own. Which only adds to my BPD and lack of understanding of who I am or if I'm really feeling things. It adds to my guilt over getting upset and my disordered actions that I cannot control such as when I have strong emotions (especially since that is a part of my trauma and people would use it against me.) And my empathy plays into my sensitive emotions as well. It's also lead me to feeling bad when said person or another didn't feel bad. For example, I'd feel like my oldest brother was extremely upset when the reality is it didn't bother me so I'd be feeling all this guilt and blame when he was literally fine. It's also lead me to getting hung up on fictional characters, replaying the scene in my head for about 5 days and taking on those emotions as my own, leading me more emotional distress.

Empathy can be great and it isn't everything either. I just know, for me with my hyperempathy (related to me being autistic), it can be so difficult. I remember ranting to my ex boyfriend how it felt like such a curse and I wished I wasn't that way and he just romanticized it even more. I mean, honestly red flag, my ex just spoke over my feelings a lot, but that's a different discussion.

I really do hate the romanticization of empathy or high empathy at all. Like yeah, it can be great just as low empathy or average empathy can be, but like, of course it has its problems too. It can be a hindrance, it makes it exceptionally easy for me to become overwhelmed or have emotions projected as my own when they arent. It also has caused difficulty in allowing me to be manipulated due to how I project these feelings of people feeling bad (like with my brother) and me feeling guilty over them. And it has happened because my ex used to play on that a LOT and guilt me over things, knowing it bothered me.

Just like anything, it comes with pros and cons. Low/no empathy has em too, average empathy too. I'm not saying "oh woe is me, high empathy sucks," I just wanted to share some of my experiences. Regardless of where your empathy lies or if it's learned or natural, you still matter and you aren't better or worse for one or the other. These are simply my struggles/experiences and how I've felt about my empathy over the years. I had a period of time where I wished I hadn't had it due to how it was emotionally exhausting and people would use it to manipulate me and make me feel like the monster for something aka adding to my abuse.

Oh yeah and the inclusion of "this disorder has no empathy so you can't have it" like I see with NPD and occasionally BPD (yes people have said that to me, omg it's ridiculous.) It only adds to my imposter syndrome.

I just really hate the romanticization of empathy in general. It doesn't make us human. It doesn't make us better cause we have high empathy or whatever. It doesn't make it some magical super power. It just is. Some people have higher empathy, some people have lower, and it all exists in a spectrum. It doesn't matter if it's high or low or wherever. It doesn't matter if you had to learn it or if you were naturally very empathetic. Empathy isn't even all that special. It's just another part of people that exists and can happen. Low/no empathy can be trauma based or it can be natural like with autistic folks. And in the end, it doesn't matter and doesn't define who you are as a person.

I just was scrolling through some stuff cause my friend got busy and it made me feel really needy for attention and like I needed to be validated and it went into a whole rabbit hole of stuff and that's how I got back to empathy stuff again.

ok the REASON i needed a drink is that ok im going to arizona flying into phoenix well i had a layover in kansas city but there was bad weather in kc today so my first flight got delayed like an hour and so i missed my connecting flight and you know i had a really stressful week filling in for my mom like have you ever been an autistic trans girl filling in for an office manager of a dentist office? that shit is stressful!!! "Hi, I'm Addison!  Welcome to Seabrook, Town of Tomorrow!"

Addison Wells:  blue-eyed, sixteen years old, fearlessly optimistic, and a perfectly ordinary human being.  Unearthly silver-white hair notwithstanding.

With a grin bright enough to cast shadows at high noon, she gestures overhead at the crisp professionally printed banner that hangs across the entryway into her parents' pastel kitchen.  It reads "Seabrook Centennial" in crisp pastel block letters.

"It's a pretty good city motto, right?  Working towards a better future is a totally cool thing.  But for Seabrook Day this summer, we're actually taking a look back at the town's past to celebrate the hundred years since our ancestors first settled here.  And let me tell you, a lot has changed since then."

Addison pauses, her grin slipping a little bit.  She straightens her baby-blue jacket and shakes her head once.  Shoulders squared, she continues with a determined cheeriness.

"Seabrook Day's always been a big deal, and the main event is the Night Show!  That's where the Mighty Shrimps cheer squad goes all out with a special Seabrook Day routine, followed by the loudest, brightest fireworks display you've ever seen.  But this year we're going to go even bigger than ever.  That's because our community is bigger than it's ever been. This year, for the first time, we're going to celebrate a new and improved Seabrook.  Past, present, and future.  That means everyone's invited.  Right, Zed?"

She sweeps an arm out with a flourish, handing off the introductions to her co-announcer.

Zed Necrodopolis:  green-haired, six feet tall, comically animated, and a pretty typical zombie.  

He throws himself into a forward roll down the narrow front hall of his dad's brick row house, popping to his feet just inside the cozy, tattered dining room.

EDIT: OMG it's Miss Jenn's arc, tooooooo. Ricky and Miss Jenn lose themselves in the pursuit of what they want. Everyone else (citation needed) finds themselves.

Ohhhh myyyyy gooood Martha Kent just shut down Jonathan Kent's mansplainy conjecture on the nonsense sci-fi plot MacGuffin with a peeved, "Jonathan, this isn't about trying to figure out what happened," and lordy if I haven't seen anything more important depicted on my TV screen.

Clark's in Smallville to get advice, and the need to get advice is just a narrative construct, a means to an end. The end is character-driven storytelling, where it's not what happens that's important, it's why what happens matters to whom it happens to.

My #1 post of 2022

Speed Racer (2008) is a story about cycles of time, it's about the tragedy of the past informing the present and the hope that the present will inform the future; it's about being stuck doing laps on a track that will never change, unless maybe somehow you're brave enough to change yourself, and then seeing what happens differently this time because you did.

Im soooooo sorry for all the spam but im a slut for finally getting some attention for our stories lol

Also I swear upon our graves that we never read the novel so it's like? A fun coincidence? xd or we astral projected without being concious of it lol

If you would go to Lena's apartement you could see that there's only one bedroom, a living room, a kitchen that has a small table in the middle, a small hall and a bathroom

Rose sleeps in the living room, but not on the couch, she has a fort made of her old cribs mattress, a few pillows, a big blanket and those few plushies she has

But when Lena comes home sooner she likes to sleep in her bed, so they can cuddle and Lena can feel like less of a shit mom

Also interesting things bc I love spamming fun but useless facts xd:

Lena's full name is Magdalena Wilusz, she's the daughter of polish immigrants and they moved from poland to Pittsburgh when she was a kindergartener

I'm namedropping her old bf, we call him Peter (sorry, P*ter xd) we name shitty people after people we dont like, thats how we almost call every shit man J*red or P*ter xd

So yeah since she's from poland Lena can speak in polish, and so can Rose, they will use it as a code language in the future to insult ppl they dont like

Lena works at that medieval restaurant known as "The King's Tavern" and a small grocery store (like Cuda's) on the outskirts of Pittsburgh

Rosie doesn't go to kindergarten bc 1, they don't have the money for it, 2, Lena goes to work earlier and gets out later and than any kindergarten would keep Rose in, and 3, due to her being autistic it'd be far too overwhealming for her (just imagine if Martin saw her have a meltdown... :( )

Lena often makes polish foods when she can buy ingredients, especially pierog (which is also how she nicknames Rose), but on many days she only has the time and money to cook some bread soup (yeah, u read that right, it's a thin soup w cumin seeds and small parts of bread in it, typical cantine and hospital food in my country and poland)

So yeah Martin is like "omg she works two jobs and she still has to eat fucking BREAD SOUP

Oh and another last thing: Rosie's full name is Rosenrot, coming from a story Lena loved (Snow White and Rose Red - Schneeweisschen und Rosenrot), and doesn't understand why Martin always looks so grumpy xd
