Summary: You’re starting to have doubts about moving all the way to Norman until a shopping trip to Ikea turns into the meet-cute you’ve been waiting for.
A/n: This isn’t a request or one of my Valentines day fics, this is just something that I have had stuck in my head ever since Owen posted this on IG and bc I’m facing total writers block with my other pieces I cranked this one out in a few hours to get the ball rolling again. Hopefully. Enjoy this totally unproofed, fluffy madness!! (Because who doesn’t need more Owen content in their life?)
There are perks to moving and one of them is undoubtedly: shopping. For furniture, home decor, kitchen utensils, whatever! Granted, shopping alone can be tedious and, for some, like pulling teeth, thus, I’ve enlisted the help of my best friends Leila and Chelsea. I didn’t even have to bribe them to come because everyone loves getting lost in Ikea. It’s one of the best things about the human experience.
“It’s been so long since I’ve been in an Ikea,” Leila says to no one in particular as we walk through the onslaught of staged bedrooms.
“What?! Are you telling me you don’t get meatballs and lawn chairs on a weekly basis?” My exaggeration makes Leila laugh as she steps into one of the display kitchens. Looking between me and Chelsea she asks,
“What would you do if I turned the handle then a jet of water sprayed out?”
“Die, I guess.”
The three of us continue through the faux house displays and past the mattresses despite Leila’s urge to jump on every single one. As we walk through the section of different lighting features, I sigh with a frown as I think about college. I changed my bachelor’s to an associate’s so I could graduate in two years. Chelsea’s parents moved out here at the end of our senior year in high school, and she moved with them to study in Norman. Leila in turn went to Arizona for an athletic physical therapy gig, leaving me to face college alone in L.A.. In the two years the three of us were apart, we missed each other more and more, and after determining which of the three states we lived in was cheapest, we packed up and headed East. Covid kind of delayed our plans. But after a few months, I picked Leila up from Arizona and together we chased open job opportunities into Norman, Oklahoma. The three of us found an apartment space to live in together and thus, we ended up in Ikea on this fine Sunday afternoon.
Snapping back into reality I see Leila standing directly under a light that’s hanging very low from the ceiling. Once standing directly underneath it, she pulls down her mask and opens her mouth, rising to her toes to eat the fixture.
“Leila, don’t you dare fellate that light bulb! You’re gonna get us kicked out.”
I swear I’m practically their mom when it comes to behaving in public. Figuring they can’t hurt themselves in the college dorm section, I lead them quickly through it and into the giant furniture warehouse section. On the far wall, I see a large poster of a couple smiling brightly behind Chelsea, but I don’t bother to read the text. Leila and I spot the poster at the same time, and the imagery jogs her memory.
“Chelsea, how’s Hunter? Haven’t heard from him slash about him in like a week,” she asks about Chelsea’s boyfriend of a year.
“Oh, yeah, he tore a ligament in his wrist.”
“What?!”
“Yeah, I guess he moved it wrong or something and put too much stress on the area that it just tore. He was moving hay bales into the horse stables.”
“As opposed to the chicken stables,” Leila judges under her breath, which makes me snicker as a result.
“I still can’t believe you’re dating a literal cowboy,” I interject, “Like, I know we’re in Oklahoma, and he’s from Tennessee, but we saw Texas on the way out here and that’s cowboy country. Norman seems more...” I trail off in search of delicate phrasing.
“Just barely marry your cousin territory, but still downing chewing tobacco whilst driving a lifted truck?” Leila hits the nail squarely on the head.
“Yeah, that sounds about right-” Before I can continue giving my thoughts on Norman, I cut myself off at the sound of laughter behind me.
“Sorry. We weren’t trying to eavesdrop, that was just really funny.” When I turn around, I see a guy roughly our age dressed in all black with bleach-blonde hair, speaking through light, broken laughter.
“No worries,” I dismiss the apology as we pass by one another, and out from the dressers section. The three of us continue into the different sections, and come to a stop once I see we’re exactly where we need to be: dining room shit!
“Cowboy boyfriends aside- oh my gosh: cowboy boyfriends. Cowboyfriends,” I say getting lost in my new terminology. Both of my friends share a mix of laughter and gasps and my ingeniousness. “Anyway. Cowboyfriends aside, how is Avery?” I ask Leila who begins blushing madly.
“She’s really good. We were just making plans for our three year anniversary, which reminds me to tell y’all I’m flying back to Phoenix to surprise her.”
“Awwww,” I nearly tear up and the sweet image of Leila and her girlfriend reuniting, “Y’all are so cute. Both of you and your partners. You know, being the only single friend in this group has made life suck a lot. Y’all are so happy and in love and not dead inside. Honestly? Get fucked both of you.” Despite my harsh words, the three of us break into a lighthearted conglomerate of laughter.
“We’ll find you someone… eventually.” Leila pretends she also can’t hear the last part of her sentence despite being the one saying it.
“I know, but I don’t think it’s in the cards for me to find love in Norman. I don’t need a cowboyfriend, and we’re not gonna find a true city slicker here either.”
When I finish my statement, I see our blonde friend seems to have followed us. I observe he comes to a stop in front of another guy in a flannel with a shopping cart. The way they jump into conversation with one another parallels the animated body language Leila, Chelsey, and I share. I continue to watch their exchange as Chelsea speaks up.
“Maybe you need someone right down the middle.”
“Yeah, like a guy who drives a truck but uses it to transport Ikea furniture instead of a whole ass tree that he’ll carve into a chair.” A small laugh escapes my lips, at both Leila’s statement, and the scene ahead of Blondie pretending to strangle his friend over something. I’m snapped out of my nosy yet endeared stare as a third guy appears. He’s a sandy blonde with billowing locks tucked under a trucker hat. And he came from behind me and my two friends to place something in their cart which keeps his back toward me. When he turns back around, my mind goes blank. Any thoughts of shopping for dining room chairs has left my mind. He is wearing a face mask, but he has such nice eyes that he could have a giraffe snout under the mask for all I care. I see him look up from the shelves, directly into my eyes. We stay locked for a moment before he breaks away and turns to his friends. I slowly turn to my friends too who are both giving me the exact same look of excitement and conspiracy.
“He’s really cute,” I sigh out with a laugh, swooning much louder than I’d have preferred.
“He has a face mask on,” Leila points out, her expression dropping from excited to cynical.
“Still! I can just tell.”
“Girl, what are you doing? Talk to him!” Chelsea whisper-shrieks.
“Shhh, I cannot take you anywhere!”
Glancing back at the handsome stranger, we connect eyes once more and I feel my face heat furiously as I realize he was already looking at me. I’m the first to break; I consult my friends for the best course of action and as I’m turned 180 to face them, Chelsea starts pretending to hyperventilate excitedly. Leila looks over my shoulder for me, discreetly surveying the other trio in the dining chairs aisle.
“Don’t look now, but he’s talking to his friends and looking between them and you.” I can hear in her voice she’s trying her best not to smile despite wearing a face mask.
“Should I give him my number?”
“Yes!”
“What are you waiting for?”
“I’m nervous! What if he’s gay?”
“Will you just get over there? I promise you a gay man would not be wearing what he’s wearing right now. Maybe a lesbian,” Leila adds for good measure.
“You guys are freaking me out, I need you to leave so I know you’re not judging my flirting.” I shoo my best friends out of the aisle as inconspicuous as possible. Kinda wish blondie would’ve done the same because when I turn back around, the other trio hasn’t moved and the only one looking at me is the one in all black. He quickly averts his eyes though and I take one last deep breath before walking over to the stranger. I tilt my chin up ever so slightly to fake a sense of confidence that I unmistakably don’t have right now.
“Hey.” Really, Y/n? Hey??
“Hey,” he greets back breathily. Why is he nervous? I’m the one who gets to be nervous! Man, he’s really cute. I can’t fuck this one up. I’m not doing so stellar right now. Perhaps you should say something else, dipshit?
“Uhm,” I should’ve scripted this. “I just wanted to say that-” You’ve got this. Don’t be a bummer. “I-uh, I think you’re really cute and I was wondering if I could give you my number?” My speech is slow, each word deliberate in spite of the fact that I feel like I’m having an out of body experience right now. I’m not the one in control of the words that are coming out of my mouth.
Upon realizing why I walked over, blondie’s friends take the question as a sign to leave and less than inconspicuously back away from the two of us. Trucker hat spares them one last glance over his left shoulder and judging by the look flannel gives him, they were definitely talking about me in their team huddle.
“Uh, yeah. I was gonna ask for your instagram- if you have one, that is.”
“I’m cool with both.” The two of us reach for our phones and unlock them with anxious hands. I move to hand him my phone with instagram open, and he trades me for his which has a new contact open. I type my name and put my favorite heart emoji next to it after triple checking the number is correct. Wow, you’re just so ballsy today, Y/n!!!!! I give him back the phone, scanning the instagram account he’s just opened and followed for me. I hear him exhale a little harder as a small laugh and can only imagine it’s from the stupid heart emoji.
“Owen,” I say in a hushed, endeared voice, fully not intending to say it out loud. “You have a million followers?! Oh, you’re an actor. OH… You’re an actor.” I really don’t need to be speaking my entire thought process right now in the middle of this Ikea. Exhaling a small laugh of my own, I see we already have a small bunch of mutuals, one of which is… Chelsea??? Looking up from my phone I turn around to see Chelsea and Leila watching the interaction from around the corner of one of the industrial shelves.
In the flurry of scattered likes, I see him find my account and follow me back. I accept the request, nervous of what he thinks of me without a face mask on. What do I think of him without a face mask on? Going back to his account, seeing his entire face is even better than just his eyes. I was right, Leila: he is cute.
“You’re really pretty,” I hear him almost sigh as he combs through the grid of my account. The comment makes my heart beat all the much faster and I finally look upward to get a glimpse of Owen in the flesh. Still as beautiful as the last time I checked!
Sparing a quick glance over my shoulder, he looks back down at me and laughs,
“I think your friends got tired of waiting.”
“I think yours did, too.” The other members of our trios come back into the aisle we had kicked them from more or less two minutes ago. We connect eyes once more and stare longingly, wordlessly at one another, so lost in each other’s beauty our friends have to break up the staring contest of infatuation.
“Y/n?” I hear Leila behind me.
“Uh, well, I have to get back to chair shopping, but- text me later?”
“For sure.”
“For sure,” I mimic his voice.
“Guess I’ll see you later. Y/n.”
“Yeah.” And with that, we’re pulled apart by our respective best friends, through the vast expanse of the Norman Ikea.
“What was that?” Chelsea asks, excitedly linking arms with me.
“I don’t know I- Wait, you have some explaining to do!”

Summary: jay seems to always take Hailey's side one everything. Hailey always seems to come first. A trauma takes place and jay realises the reality.

Since Hailey had received a job offer from the FBI Jay had become really close with her, so close then he was pushing away his own actual girlfriend. It wasn't just y/n who noticed this though Atwater asked y/n one evening at molly's if her and Jay had broken up. 
Y/n loved Hailey and she thought she was so good to Jay. Maybe too good to him. When Jay got shot one time y/n was sat in the waiting room and Hailey and Vanessa were there and she heard a convocation she wish she could unhear. 
'you love him' Vanessa said to Hailey.
'Of course I love him he's my partner' was the response. 
This broke Y/n heart a little as she knew at that point that if she wasn't in the equation Jay would be in absolute awe of Hailey. Who was y/n anyways? Everyone would prefer a beautiful blonde greek badass cop. 
Y/n worked with a law firm, in fact that's how she met Jay. She was a criminal defence attorney she met Jay in an interrogation room whilst defending her client. Jay later asked for her number and one thing led to another. 
At some points she wishes she never picked up that phone call.
'Y/n if your gonna start then leave, Hailey would be so fine wi-' Jay yet again started comparing y/n to Hailey. Y/n was pissed off that Jay kept staying out late with Hailey. 
Thats all it took. Y/n lost it. "GET THE FUCK OUT AND GO BE WITH HER THEN" Y/n was fuming she was so tired of being compared to Hailey. Her own boyfriend who was meant to love her and only her was clearly in love with another woman.
"y/n come on what's going on with you? Since I've been shot you've been so different around me. Talk to me baby" Jay was so soothing. He gently approached y/n and gently placed some hair behind her ear. 
Y/n refused to even look at him. I guess you could say that she reached her breaking point. She had given up on him. Jay went to kiss her as a way of saying 'I love you' but she turned her head before he had the chance. As much as it hurt her, y/n had to leave. She made her way to the bedroom completely avoiding all eye contact with Jay. She grabbed a duffle and started showing clothes into it. Jay just stood there entirely confused on what to say or do. 
"I'll come get the rest when you're out" a few tears were brimming in her eyes but she sure as hell wasn't going to let them fall. 
Jay went to grab her hand y/n ignored him and walked out the door. 
*BANG BANG BANG 
"Derek what do you want" y/n was at her firm and her associate, Derek was wanting her. 
"you need to go to the 21st district, Mr Maxwell got caught up again" y/n rolled her eyes. Mr Maxwell was a frequent flyer he was homeless, y/n always felt bad for him so she took his case pro-bono. However, Rossi Maxwell always seemed to find trouble. 
"Tell him i'll be there in twenty" and with that y/n left to go to the district. 
"Hey Trudy, looking as beautiful as ever" y/n cheekily said with a smirk. 
Trudy rolled her eyes and responded with a blunt "upstairs" 
Going up these stairs was a familiar feeling for y/n whether she was going to support a client or going to see her boyfriend, well now ex-boyfriend. Y/n hadn't seen Jay in a week she still hasn't been by the house to collect her stuff. She loved Jay but just couldn't face him. 
Ruzek greeted y/n with a hug as soon as he saw her "girl I thought you were dead where have you been?" 
y/n just laughed and said "Maxwell? what's he been up to this time?"
Ruzek chuckled slightly 'what hasn't that man done? He got caught with some dope but if I tell you anymore I'm pretty sure you'll get him released and we will lose our best shot of catching our guy."
Y/n raised her brows at him. "Ruzek, you do realise i'm his lawyer and that's my job right?" 
Ruzek clicked his finger and led her to the interrogation room. 
"Adam who's in there with him?" y/n asked nervously. 
"Jay and Hailey" Ruzek said barely above a whisper. It was clear that everyone seemed to know about this love triangle between y/n, jay and Hailey. 
Y/n being the badass she is walked in with her head held up. "Rossi what have you gotten yourself into this time?" 
Rossi gave her his compelling cheeky smirk "oh nothing new, I just wanted to see your pretty face" 
Y/n smiled at him then looked towards Hailey who was sat next to jay directly in-front of Mr Maxwell. "My client has nothing further to say to you, we are leaving." 
Mr Maxwell stood up. "no he's not, he's being charged with the handling of a class a drug as well as distribution, hell I could hold him as an accessory to murder" Hailey stated with a stern voice. 
"accessory. Hailey come on he's a harmless old man who can hardly look after himself how the hell would he be able to help with murder?" y/n stated somewhat pissed off. 
"y/n he's staying. End of." Hailey said slightly raising her tone. Jay sat there silently not knowing where to look. He saw that Hailey was getting annoyed and placed his hand on her lower back. Y/n saw this and it made her blood boil. How could he have moved on in a week? They had been together for 3 years and he goes to his partner in a week! It was really clear how much he cared for y/n. 
"My client has rights and IM NOT SEEING ANY PROOF OF THIS ACCESSORY TO MURDER. MY client denies all charged and without any admissible evidence we will be walking out of here now." y/n leaned over the table to she was in Hailey's face "end of" she whispered to her. Y/n was true to her word she told Mr Maxwell to leave the interrogation room and to go outside, where Derek, the associate, was waiting. Y/n wanted to speak to Voight about how the whole situation was handled. 
"y/n can we-" jay began.  
"no" y/n simply stated and carried on walking. However, she was stopped when Jay grabbed onto her wrist and pulled her into him. 
"baby please. I love you" y/n could have sworn she saw tears threatening to spill form his eyes. This made her soften but she was still mad. 
"I won't be second place" she stated and with that she walked off to Voight's office.
"you need to get your detectives in place before this unit has a pending court trial" y/n said entering Voight's office. 
"y/n I know she was out of place bu-" Voight began. 
"no Voight I'm tired of making excuses for this unit sort it out" as y/n was leaving she saw Hailey comforting Jay. Y/n chucked and murmured a "point proven, case closed" and made her way back outside to meet with her client and Derek. 
Normally, Derek would be waiting outside the car but this time he wasn't. Y/n just predicted that he was in the car; the windows were tinted so she couldn't see. Y/n got in and saw Derek in the back seat, he was coated in blood. "oh my - DEREK WAKE UP" she started to shake him. Maxwell was sat next to Derek looking at his hand with a sore excuse of a smirk. "WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO?" she screamed at him. This got his attention, he looked up at her and reached for a knife. Y/n knew what was about to come so she reached for the door handle of the car. Maxwell grabbed some rope and put it around y/n neck. She found it strange with how he didn't say a word, this wasn't him. She didn't know this person, she knew a sweet old man who just got caught up in the wrong crowd. Y/n fought hard trying not to be choked to death, tears were falling and fear was taking over her, she could barely breathe. "Rossi please" y/n said softly as she was somewhat loosing conciseness due to the lack of oxygen. This made him stop. He got out the car and left. y/n couldn't move, when she finally pulled herself together she went to check on Derek. "hey, hey" she said tears falling rapidly. She couldn't find a pulse and knew she needed help. She could barely catch her breathe so she had to leave the car. She got out and looked around, Maxwell was no where to be seen. 
She started speed walking back towards the district. She was stopped by a sharp pain in her upper ribs. She turned around, it was Maxwell. She had been stabbed. He continued plunging the knife into her, she didn't have any energy to fight him off. "Rossi please stop" y/n managed to get out. She wasn't sure if he heard so she said it again with everything she had "Rossi stop p-please." This time he looked at her. He froze and dropped the knife. y/n kicked it out the way. Yn fell to her knees she was blacking out. Maxwell snapped out of his trance and saw her in front of him covered in blood. 
"Y/L/N! HELPPPP" Maxwell picked her up and ran into the district with her in his arms. 
Trudy saw them and instantly shouted "HELP CITIZEN DOWN" she froze, that's when she recognised her. "AVERY GET YOUR ASS UP TO INTELLIGENCE AND TELL THEM Y/N Y/L/N IS DOWN HERE AND IS IN BAD SHAPE" Trudy put pressure on her wounds "come on y/n stay with me". 
JAYS POV. 
One of the officers came running up the stairs, something had to be wrong. 
"sergeant platt said you need to come down stairs she said something about a 'y/n y/l/n' she's in real bad shape" he started rambling. My heart dropped. There was no way it was her. How could it be her. 
I ran downstairs in less than a second and I saw her. She looked completely lifeless. 
"baby, come on oh my god, baby wake up" I cried. I couldn't hold myself together. I grabbed her hand whilst Trudy was doing CPR. 
END OF POV. 
Jay was frantically pacing around the hospital waiting room. How could he have let this happen? Who the hell would do this to her?
Dr Halstead entered the room. 
"Will, tell me she's fine. Will please" Will placed a hand on his brothers shoulder and took a deep breath. 
"Jay she lost a lot of blood. She's in the ICU at the moment its a hit and miss she's just gotta make it though the night" Jay fell to the floor sobbing loudly. Will comforted him. They were like this for a while until Jay finally spoke. 
"Can I see her?" Will responded with a nod, not knowing what else to say. 
Will walked Jay to y/n's room. Jay walked in and Will left them alone. 
JAYS POV. 
She looked ghost-like, yet perfect. Why didn't I go after her? why didn't I try to get her to stay? This is my fault. 
I went and sat next to her. I grabbed her hand and placed a light kiss on it. 
"Hey honey, its me." I was hoping she would wake up and answer me, she didn't. 
I didn't know what to do. what could I do? 
END OF POV
Y/n made it though the night but she still had no woken up. Two weeks had passed and nothing seemed to be improving. 
"Jay go home, take a shower and get some sleep I will call you if anything changes I promise." Will told Jay sternly. 
"promise" Jay said mid-yawn. 
"yes let me drive you" and with that both the Halstead brothers drove back to Jay's apartment, previously his and y/n's. 
Jay went straight to the bathroom when he remembered what was in the cabinet. He smiled at the thought of what he could have had. He never understood why y/n was always so mad at him he really never noticed how close he was getting with Hailey. He was furious at himself. 
"Jay you good?" Will interrupted his thoughts. Jay opened the bathroom door and showed Will what was making him smile. "do you think this was her style?"
Will laughed. "brother, she's a lawyer. Believe me they make it clear what they want. That is perfect" Jay also laughed. It was a noise Will missed hearing. 
Jay had a nap whilst Will went back to the ER. 
*BEEP BEEP BEEP
*BEEP BEEP BEEP
Jay didn't hear. 
*BEEP BEEP BEEP
He finally heard. Jay answered the phone as quick as he possibly could. 
"what's happened?" jay asked frantically 
"get here now" was all Will had to say. 
Jay rushed out the door and sped to the ER with sirens on. He ran up to y/n's room. He went to the door and he rushed over to her. 
"you're awake, Will had me thinking you were dead" Jay chucked 
Y/n didn't say anything she still was somewhat mad at Jay. 
"Y/n I didn't realise what I did when you left, I really confused me. I love you and I thought you loved me too. I have never missed someone so much, you make me the happiest man. These past 3 years have been the best. You put up with me through my sleepless nights, through the hospital visits and all the times I tried arguing with you in the interrogation rooms. y/n/n you are my everything. You are the reason why I smile in the morning and the reason why I can peacefully and happily close my eyes at night. Atwater made me realise about Hailey, I've only been with her so much lately because she's leaving y/n. She accepting the FBI offer and I wanted to give a good goodbye, spent time with her you know. She's one hell of a cop. She wanted me to go with her. I said no because everything I could ever want is right her. My life is perfect. Well, it was until you left and got yourself stabbed" Jay lightly chuckled. Y/n was tearing up and smiled. Until realisation hit her about being stabbed. 
"Maxwell-" 
"Is in a mental asylum. He has a 2 personality disorder, he will get better he just needs some support" Jay said softly going to kiss her forehead. 
"Derek?" y/n asked not really wanting to know the answer. 
Jay shook his head "i'm sorry" 
Y/n moved over in the uncomfortable hospital bed. "whoa what are you doing, you'll hurt yourself?" jay said sternly. 
"shut up and come cuddle me" y/n said back to him sternly. Jay did as he was told being careful not to hurt her. 
"i'm an idiot" she said. 
Jay laughed "my idiot" 
Will came in and ruined the moment "hey lovers not naughty business in the room thank youuu" They all laughed as Jay smacked his brother lightly on the head. Will placed something in Jay's hands making sure y/n wouldn't see he winked at him then left.  
"What was that" y/n asked as Jay got comfy next to her. 
"Look at me" Jay said. She did as she was told. "I love you. I don't want to lose you or wake up without you for another day. You are the one I want and I've been planning this for a while"
Jay got down from the bed and got on one knee. 
"y/n will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?"
y/n didn't know what to say so she just nodded and let the tears flow from her eyes. Jay placed the ring on her finger.

Today was your third week at your new job. Thanks to your brother Andrew, you got in at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Before, you worked in a hospital on the other side of the country which you thoroughly enjoyed but due to staff cuts, you had to leave. Being incredibly good at what you do, you got offered some jobs but none of them interested you. So Andrew spoke to his superior and got you a job as an attending in OB/GYN. Your sister Carina worked in OB/GYN also, so that’s where your fascination and passion for this specialty came from.
‘Hey, Y/N! How’s moving in going?’ Arizona asked, handing you a coffee. You took a sip and let the hot beverage slip down your throat. Warmth spread through your whole body as you enjoyed the bitter taste on your tongue.
‘It’s going okay, actually. All I need to do is paint the walls and I’m done,’ you nodded contently. Moving in was less stressful than you thought it would be, thanks to your newly made friends here at Grey Sloan. Arizona was the first person Andrew introduced you to and since he’s her roommate and head of Ped’s, you knew you would most likely see each other more.
‘Cool! Hey, you wanna come over for dinner on friday? I’ll kick Andrew out and we can have a girls night. If you want I’ll invite the other girls too,’ she said, pointing to the three sisters at the end of the hallway who waved at you.
‘Yeah, that would be fun. If it’s not a bother to you, that is,’ you said. You hated being a bother to anyone and always did your best to keep to yourself. Especially since you were new, you didn’t want to intrude. All of the staff seemed really close to each other by what you had seen so far.
‘Oh it’s no problem at all!’ she waved off, ‘And besides, after such a stressful time you deserve a glass of wine. Or bottle.’ She winked at you and left to check up on het patients. You knew you had surgery tonight, so you decided to lay down for a little in one of the on-call rooms. Thinking about your life before and now made you smile. The job you had was great, but they didn’t let you do what you did best; save lives and deliver babies. There was always someone who was better than you or stole your patients. It was unfair and definitely uncalled for, but being here made you feel appreciated and welcomed. You hadn’t met everyone yet, but so far you got along with everyone.
You heard a knock on the door and got up. It was one of the interns who told you the surgery had been moved to the afternoon. You decided to check on the patient before surgery, but someone already beat you to it. A man was talking to your patient. He was tall, muscular and had piercing blue eyes. You knew it was Jackson Avery, as you had seen on the board earlier today, but you had yet to meet the man. Your breath hitched for a moment and that caught the attention of both your patient and the still unknown man.
‘Hi, sorry to interrupt. I’m doctor DeLuca. I’ll be performing your surgery with doctor Avery,’ you introduced yourself to the patient with a smile. She shook your hand and then turned her attention back to Jackson. He explained every step of the surgery. She was pregnant with twins, but her skin had been completely stretched out, making the continuation of the pregnancy very dangerous. You would deliver both babies safely while Jackson restored the skin. It wasn’t a risky procedure, but it did require some skills. Hence the two of you being here. Once he was done explaining, she felt safe enough and two interns took her to pre-op. You handed the tablet to one of the nurses, who you remembered was called Linda, and turned to Jackson.
‘I don’t believe we’ve met yet. I’m Y/N DeLuca, ’ you said with a smile and held out your hand for him to take. He shook it and nodded at you.
‘Jackson Avery. Let me be clear straight away. Don’t try anything funny with me or anyone in this hospital. This hospital is funded with the money I provided, so this placed is owned by me, no matter what anyone says. I can kick you out as easily as you came in. So, let’s do this surgery, because I have more to do today.’ Not waiting for an answer, he turned around and left to prep for surgery. You stared at him until he left and shook yourself out of your haze. What crawled up his ass and died?
When you tried to leave, you bumped into Andrew.
‘Hey, Annie,’ you asked, hearing him groan behind you. You had called him that since you caught him singing along to Annie: The Musical one night. He hated it ever since, but after doing it for so long his actual name sounded weird so you just kept using it. ‘Is Jackson always such an ass?’ You turned around and watched his face turn into a frown.
‘No.. most of the time he’s the nicest guy around, why?’ he asked. He saw you frowning and stepped towards you, placing a hand on your shoulder. ‘Did he do something?’ 
Your sister was older than you and he was younger, making you the middle child, but he always protected you like an older brother. Whenever you felt sad or angry, you came to him first before anyone else.
‘No, nothing happened. I just introduced myself and he started going on about me not trying anything funny here because he could kick me out if he wanted to,’ you mumbled.
‘Hmm.. maybe he has a bad day? I can talk to him if you want me to?’
‘No, it’s okay. I’ve got surgery with him, so I’ll talk to him. I gotta go, see you tonight?’ you asked. He nodded and smiled. 
‘Goodluck, peanut! Page me if you need anything.’
You scrubbed, changed into different clothes and stared operating. You could see how tense Jackson still was, so you tried to lighten the mood.
‘So, Jackson, how long have you been here for?’ you asked. Your hands worked flawlessly and Jackson noticed. He was pissed off at someone new coming to work at the hospital again, thinking it would only cause more drama again, but you seemed actually nice and talented. It sparked a little jealousy in him that he hadn’t felt before.
‘Long enough,’ he grumbled. You couldn’t help but notice how attractive he was. His eyebrows were furrowed and he watched the skin he worked on closely. You had seen his work before and it was incredible.
‘Okay, well..’ you started, ‘Not to kiss your ass or anything, but I think you’re a great surgeon and I am really looking forward to working with you more in the future.’
There was no response as you continued on delivering the babies. You soon delivered a boy and shortly after a little girl.
‘There they are. Please take them to either doctor Robins or Karev. They’ll check up on them and inform the parents. I’ll be right there,’ you told the interns with a smile and they quickly left.
‘That was really nice, you know.. Saving the hospital and all. I couldn’t-’ you got cut off by a load groan of Jackson.
‘Oh, do you ever shut up?’
Shocked at his sudden snap, your hands froze and your breath hitched. He seemed to be okay with what he said, since he just kept going. What you didn’t know was that he didn’t mean to snap. It was like he lost control over his mouth, because when the words left his lips, he was shocked himself. Snapping at a woman like that was very unlike him, so when you mumbled out a sorry, he wanted to apologize, but the words were stuck in his throat.

The ‘shut up’ incident had been almost a year ago. You had worked with him a few times after that and he talked to you more often now, but luckily Arizona offered to take your surgeries with him so you could take over hers. She had truly been your best friend since you started at Grey Sloan, besides April. The three of you got along incredibly well and you even went out for dinner once a month. Andrew and you had switched apartments, so you now lived with Arizona and he lived in your apartment.
It was saturday and you were about to leave, but you wanted to check on you patient Amy one last time before she left. She was allowed to leave tomorrow and you had the day off, so you wouldn’t see her anymore. Sofia was 18 and was now a mother of a healthy baby girl. Her parents refused to see her as they were religious and didn’t approve of their daughter having sex before marriage. So you kind of took her under your wing until she left.
‘How are you holding up?’ you asked her, sitting on the end of her bed. She smiled at the little peanut laying on her chest as she wrapped her little hand around Amy’s finger. 
‘I’m okay. I guess all the cliché’s are true. Whenever I look at her everything just falls away. I’m going to be okay. We will be okay. I know we are,’ she spoke and you felt extremely proud of her. When she came in, she was terrified, alone and hurt. Now, she was all grown up and not scared of what the future would bring.
‘I’m proud of you, Amy. I really am. You have my number, so if anything happens or if you need anything, just give me a call, okay?’ She nodded and you hugged her goodbye. You caressed the little girl over the head and was about to leave when suddenly her heartbeat picked up and she started seizing. You took the child away as you yelled at nurses to help you, but to no avail. She had a heart attack and didn’t survive. The baby was taken away to the pediatric wing and her body was taken to the morgue. You sat in the middle of the room, staring at the place Amy laid alive and smiling just a little over an hour ago. Your bottom lip trembled and you could feel your throat closing up as you choked back a sob.
Jackson was about to leave too, when he saw you sitting alone in an empty room quietly crying to yourself. He glanced around to see if anyone knew what you were doing there, but when he saw no one even noticed you were sitting on your own, he stepped in. 
‘What are you doing here?’ he softly asked you. He noticed you tensing up, but something inside him told him you needed someone to be there for you. Clearly you were shaken up, so he couldn’t just leave you here alone. He grabbed a chair and sat down next to you. He followed your gaze and it didn’t take long for him to realise you’d lost a patient.
‘How old was she?’ he whispered. You let out a shaky breath and wiped away your tears.
‘Eighteen. Heart attack,’ you whispered back, your voice breaking. His heart clenched when he saw you so broken. You always wandered and skipped around the halls, a smile on your face and carrying positivity with you everywhere you went. Seeing tears falling down your cheeks and a frown on your face was nothing like you.
‘I’m sorry,’ he said, placing a hand on your thigh. You felt a spark of electricity flow through your body and turned to face him. His eyes held remorse and his eyebrows were furrowed in worry.
‘I’m sorry too.’
You two sat like this for a few minutes. Sitting in silence cleared your head. You enjoyed Jackson’s company and it made you feel safe and warm to know he wanted to know if you were okay.
‘Come on. I’ll take you home,’ he offered, holding out his hand for you to take. You gladly took it and placed the chairs back on their spots. You got in his expensive car and silently drove to Arizona’s and your place. When you arrived, you didn’t get out right away.
‘Thank you Jackson. You didn’t have to do that, wait for me, I mean. But thank you for waiting and being there. I appreciate it,’ you told him, not daring to look him in the eyes. You could see him nod in the corner of your eye.
‘No problem. If you need anyone, you can call me whenever you want.. Even if you don’t have a reason to.’ 
Your heart fluttered at his words and you blushed. He reached out for your hand and kissed the top of it.
‘Goodnight, Jackson. Thanks again.’

Three years you had been working here. Since the passing of your patient, you and Jackson got along surprisingly well. Others seemed to notice as well, because both of you got invited to parties and dinners more, because you finally could be in a room with each other without one killing the other. Either of you were unaware of the feelings you shared for each other, that seemed to increase more every day.
‘Hey Jackson, wanna come over for dinner tonight? Arizona is out and I don’t wanna sit alone all night,’ you asked him, flopping down on the couch next to him. He seemed to ignore you as he continued playing on his phone.
‘Jackson? Are you okay?’ you asked again, this time softer and turning your body to look at him. You saw him swallow thickly and nervously play with his beard. It felt like a slap to the face when he ignored you. After three years you could finally have a decent conversation and now he was shutting you out again..? It simply didn’t make sense.
‘Did I do something wrong?’ you whispered. You swallowed the lump in your throat and Jackson finally looked up at you. He had to say it. It was now or never.
‘Tell me I’m wrong,’ he stated. His eyes held fear as he looked you in the eyes.
‘Wrong about what?’ you asked, eyebrows furrowing in confusion. ‘Jackson, what’s going on?’ Placing a hand on his knee, his eyes flickered from your hand to your face.
‘Tell me I’m right to believe you share the same feelings I have for you,’ he breathed out. Your heart beat loudly in your ears and you felt like he could hear it. He placed his hand over yours that laid on his knee and interwined your hands. You couldn’t believe it. Taking you silence as an answer, he chuckled bitterly and let go of your hand.
‘I guess I was wrong,’ he mumbled, standing up. You quickly stood up too.
‘I want to tell you you’re wrong, but that would be a lie. And I can’t lie; not to you. I actually wanted to tell you the same. Tonight. If you wanted to of course.’ You stumbled over your words as you tried to tell him how you felt. He chuckled at your rambling and he cut you short by placing a hand in your neck and pulling you against him, kissing you softly. His lips were soft and full and he smelled amazing. You closed your eyes, wrapping your arms around his neck and standing in your tip toes to pull him closer.
‘Only if it’s a date and I cook for you,’ he whispered against your lips. You giggled and nodded, making him smile.
‘I’m sure we can arrange that.’
You leaned in again, but froze when you heard a voice behind you.
‘Oh come on! Not you too. Now I’ve lost both my sisters to my co-workers. I shouldn’t have offered you the job, damn it,’ Andrew grumbled.
‘Oh, shut it Annie. Your time will come,’ you called after him, earning a middle finger in return, making you and Jackson giggle.

“Look Sam, just admit it, we’re lost.” You whined, folding the map back up and stuffing it into your fanny pack that was slung across your chest. The snow crunching under your combat boots as you walked, the icy wind nipping at your skin like sharp needles. The sun was out, shining across the snow making it sparkle like glitter. 
You were in Sweden chasing some leads on lost Viking Treasure, but this time with just you and Sam. Nate had a baby on the way, even though he wished he could come, he needed to look after Elena. You had both been left with an empty, unsatisfied feeling after finding Avery’s treasure few months before, but with Sam, it hit him hard the most. But being here with him, now, was all you ever wanted. You two were just friends, but he was your best friend, you could always count on him whenever you were in trouble or whenever you needed support, he was always there. You were in love with him, and you had been for a long time, all you wanted to do was tell him but never found the right time. You were hoping he already knew. 
“We are not lost, you just don’t know how to read a map.” He said in a snarky tone, walking up beside you and unzipping your fanny pack and pulled out the map again so he could take a closer look at it. 
“You’re an ass. You know I’m smarter than you.” You elbowed him in the rib. He jerked a little clutching his side with his hand. 
“Rude.” A light laugh left his lips, his breath showing from the cold, turning his head and smiling at you. “Now, lets see where we are.” He carefully scanned the map, you just watched him with a smile on your face, taking in every little detail and aspect of his skin, his hair blowing in the breeze. His hazel eyes had a glow from the suns rays, you could look into them forever, like tiny golden pools. Being in Sweden with Sam reminded you of being in Scotland with him and Nate, with Nadine’s army blowing shit up every five seconds. 
“Right, we are here. We need to get to that wooden structure over there.” His fingers pointed to the area on the map then to a building in the distance, luckily it was still standing but who knows, everything you’ve stepped foot on in the past has either exploded or fallen apart. You weren’t listening to a word he said, too busy falling even more in love with him than he already knew. He felt your eyes on him, folding the map and putting it into his sherpa jacket pocket. 
“Like what you see, hm?” He said in a seductive, husky tone purposely in your ear then pushed your shoulder gently to get your attention back to the mission. Your cheeks felt a burning sensation, either from the cold or from embarrassment for staring for so long. You snapped yourself out of it and scoffed, “You wish Samuel,” then rolling your eyes and continued walking along the path along the cliff, staying as far away from the edge as possible. 
“Alright, so what exactly are we looking for?” You asked, putting your hands in your pockets to keep warm, you were freezing, and you were sure he was too, even if he wouldn’t admit it. You looked at the ground and at every step you took, kicking snow off your boots as you went along, tucking some hair behind your ear.
“Well, it’s a very, very old viking helmet, supposedly encrusted with the finest jewels and diamonds.” A smile was brought to his face, he loved to talk about hidden treasures and artefacts, especially talking to you about it in particular. He was thankful that you’d listen to him, for hours even, sometimes he would come over to your place at four in the morning just to talk about lost cities. 
“And how much is it worth? Um, do you think?” You stopped in your tracks to look at him, the excitement was showing in him and he couldn’t contain himself. 
“Not as much as Avery’s treasure but, a great amount,” He shrugged. “I’m just glad I’m not searching for it alone.” Your chest tightened slightly at his words, you swore you could feel the love rising inside of you. 
“Me too.” Was all you could say, you just so badly wanted to tell him you loved him, that you loved every scar, every wound, every scratch and mark that covered his body and that you still thought he was perfect. 
“We should start climbing now.” You said looking up at the tall black cliff that stood before you and rubbed your hands together to keep them warm. 
“Need a boost m’lady?” He smirked, he always liked to give you the first boost, just to get a good look at your ass every chance he got. 
“Thank you, loverboy.” You gave him a flirtatious wink as he crouched down a little in front of you holding out both his hands on his knee. Holding onto his shoulders you stood in his hands and he pushed you upside the cliff, grabbing onto the first hand hold you saw incase you fell. Falling to your death into a black abyss was not on your agenda right now. Sam watched you in awe at your skills and your strength, memories of yours and his friendship from the Avery job was circling his mind, wishing he had made a move before, wishing he had kissed you back in Italy when you were in that skin tight, red dress that brought out your eyes. That night he couldn’t take his eyes off of you, almost forgetting to steal the cross from the auction. And the time you also got shot while he tried to cover you, he still blames himself for getting you hurt but you were a strong girl, and you still are and he knew that. Not realising you were at the top of the cliff already while he was drowning in his own thoughts about you, you called down to him, catching his attention. 
“Sam? Are you coming or are you going to just stand there?” You shouted down to him, he snapped from his thoughts and laughed awkwardly. 
“Yes ma’am.” Talking to himself, he ran his fingers through his hair and jumped up, climbing the cliff faster than you could but he was more trained than you at scaling high places and considering he was taller. He grunted, pulling himself up on the ledge and standing up, brushing the snow off his jeans. You felt your hands get colder, he noticed you shivering, since you were high up the wind was a little stronger and a lot more colder. Fuck, you hated winter when you weren’t inside your home, drinking hot cocoa, reading Sam and Nate’s mom’s journal by the fireplace, wondering how amazing of a mother she was to them. 
“Hey, you’re cold. C’mere.” He quickly wrapped his hands around yours before you could say anything, he brought your hands to his lips, giving them small warm kisses, his eyes looking into yours. His surprisingly warm hands making you feel safe and secure. All you could do was smile, “Thanks Sam.” You whispered, he pulled you a little closer to him by the hands, holding them to his chest. 
“Anytime darlin’,” His smile was your favourite thing about him. He removed his hands from yours and wrapped them around you holding you tight against him to keep the warmth in before resuming your quest. His chin settled on the top of your head, your ear was pressed to his chest and you could hear his heart pounding a million miles an hour. His cologne was strong, but he wasn’t wearing a lot. 
“[Y/N]?“ He felt like his chest was going to explode at what he was about to say. He was nervous, but it was a good feeling. He was sure of it. He wasn’t usually nervous around women, he was actually very confident in flirting and making moves on the girls he’d come across in bars, or on the job. He knew this was something real, something different with you.  
“Hm?” You lifted your face away from his chest and looked up at him. 
“I have to tell you something.” He pulled back from the hug, taking a seat down on the snow away from the edge of the cliff you had climbed up from. 
“Okay, is everything alright?” Your voice was full of worry, going over and sitting beside him, stretching your legs out in front of you. 
“Yeah, yeah everything’s fine, it’s just-,” He tied up the laces tighter on his boots, accidentally kicking snow at you. Brushing it away you watched him, waiting for his explanation. 
“Sam, spit it out, we got a lot of ground to cover. You can tell me anything.” You placed a hand on his shoulder, gently touching his cheek with your thumb. 
He turned to face you. Taking a deep breath, hoping you wouldn’t run away or slap him for what he was about to say. 
“I love you.” He reached over and tucked a loose strand of hair behind your ear. 
“Sam-, I-, wha-, really?” You were surprised, but not that surprised, he would always find a way to make you notice him, sometimes he’d find a way to ‘accidentally’ touch your hands or your body or compliment you at any given time. 
He chuckled, “Yeah, really.” He felt proud, he felt good about himself that he was finally able to tell you, especially in a beautiful country such as Sweden and sitting in the snow looking at the view, with a pink and blue sunrise shining over the mountains. 
You leapt over and pushed his back to the ground, straddling his body, his hands immediately attaching to your waist. Leaning down you whispered in his ear, he shivered at the feeling more than the cold ever could. 
“I love you too.” He moved his hand to your face bringing you to look at him, pushing your hair out of his face and gripping your neck gently, finally kissing you like he had been begging to do. Your tongues making contact with each other, the nicotine and breath minty taste collided with your tastebuds. Kissing for what felt like hours but was only a few minutes, he pulled back just to gaze into your eyes once again, his hazel eyes glowing with happiness. 
“Goddamn I’m a lucky man.” He sighed happily, running his fingers through your hair. 
“What can I say? A thief stole my heart.” Both laughing you went in for another passionate kiss.

Chapter Four: The Truth Will Set You Free

Music rings through the Gryffindor Common Room as everyone cheers. I grin at the crowd as I walk through it. I feel people patting me on the back as I come down from changing. I see Hermione standing in the corner next to a girl from the year below us. “Hey ‘Mione!” I call. She looks at me and ignores me as she returns to her conversation. I tap her shoulder, she still ignores me. “If you’ll excuse her.” I say politely to the girl she’s speaking to. I grab her arm before tugging her to a secluded area of the room. 
“What the hell?” Hermione seethes. 
“I wanted to talk to you! You haven’t said a word to me since this morning!” I say in a hushed tone. 
“Has it occurred to you, maybe I don’t want to talk to you right now,” Hermione replies. 
“Why don’t you want to speak to me?” I ask, confused. I hear a voice call my name. I look over to see Avery wave me over. I smile at her as I hold up my pointer finger. 
“That’s why,” Hermione scoffs. 
“What?” I say confused. “Avery?” 
“Yes! Bloody hell, I told you I didn’t trust her,” she replies. 
“You don’t even know her, H,” I argue. 
“I know I don’t like you being with her,” she seethes. 
“What?” I ask. 
“I don’t like you being around her,” Hermione repeats. “It pisses me off! You called her Dove.” Her voice grows quieter at the end of her sentence. 
“Sorry, but you’ve been so busy being shoved up Krum’s arse that I’ve barely seen you besides classes and at night!” I argue, my voice growing louder. 
“I don’t spend that much time with him!” She scoffs. 
“Notice how you were his treasure today? You know who mine was? Fred. You’d think it’d be you, but nope. You’re in love with Krum now!” I laugh. 
“His name is Viktor!” She exclaims. 
“I don’t give a fuck what his name is. You have no right to try and tell me I can’t be involved with Avery while you’ve blown me and the boys off every moment you can to hang out with that git. Or is it just me?” I ask. Hermione’s silent as I shake my head. “I gotta go. Avery wants me.” I turn and walk away from the small girl as I walk up behind Avery and wrap my arms around her middle. I rest my head on her shoulder as she smiles. 
“Hi love,” she hums.
“Hello, Angel,” I smile. “What are you doing?” 
“Just chatting,” Avery replies. 
“Sounds boring,” I whisper into her ear. 
“It is,” she whispers back. I grin happily as I tug her closer to me as I tuck my face into her neck. 
“How was your day, Dove,” I say against her skin. 
“Stressful, you gave me quite the scare today,” Avery says as she rubs my arm. 
“I’m sorry. How can I make it better?” I ask as I press a soft kiss to her neck. 
“You could stay in my dorm tonight,” Avery replies. 
“Sounds good to me,” I grin. Avery leans her head back against mine as I kiss her forehead. 
A few hours go by until the party dies down. I feel Avery’s body slumped against my side as I help her up the stairs. She’s babbling drunkenly as she presses her lips to my neck. 
“Ave, what are you doing?” I ask as I push her face away. 
“Kissin you,” she mumbles as she tries to kiss my lips. 
“You’re drunk, not right now,” I say as I push open the door to her dorm. I see one of her friends sitting on her bed. “She’s drunk, but I’m pretty sure she’ll be out soon.” I smile at the younger girl. I set Avery down on her own bed before I pulled her shoes off. 
“Are you staying?” Avery whines as she looks up at me. 
“Not tonight, maybe tomorrow,” I say softly. Avery pouts as I cover her up. She falls asleep moments later. 
“I have to tell you something,” the girl across the room says. I turn to look at her in confusion. 
“I don’t think I’ve ever gotten your name,” I say. 
“I’m Clarissa, but you can call me Rissa,” she smiles. 
“What did you have to tell me?” I ask. 
“Avery was dared to do this, the whole thing with you. I heard her and her friends talking about it. She was dared to make a champion fall for her, and she chose you,” Rissa says softly. My heart drops as my mouth dries. 
“What?” I say softly. “You swear to Merlin you’re not lying.”
“I swear, I have no reason to lie about something like this,” she says softly. 
“What do I do?” I say as I shake my head. 
“Don’t get with her, don’t do anything. You’ll get hurt,” Rissa says. 
“Thank you so much,” I say as I walk through the door. I walk quietly back to my own dorm before I push through it. I kick my shoes off as I close my door. I walk to my dresser as I pull pajamas out. I change quickly before I get into bed. I fall asleep staring at the brick ceiling.

Once I wake up my mind instantly flies to what Rissa said last night. I stand up and slip on a pair of socks and trainers before going down to the Great Hall. I saw Hermione sitting next to Ron with Harry and the twins across from him. I quietly slip into the spot between the twins as I grab a chocolate croissant. I eat it silently as I stare at the table. I feel a shoulder nudge mine, I look up to see George looking down at me. 
“You alright, Y/N/N?” He asks softly. 
“Avery, it was a dare,” I laughed quietly. 
“What?” George says angrily. 
“Her friends bet her that she couldn’t make a champion fall for her. And I was the oh so lucky champion she chose,” I reply. 
“I swear to bloody Merlin, if she wasn’t a girl,” he says angrily. 
“What’s the matter?” Harry asks as he looks between George and I. 
“Fucking Avery, that right cunt,” George seethes. 
“What’d she do?” Ron asks. I look at George as he gives me a look asking if he can say. I nod softly before he bursts. 
“She was using Y/N! It was all for a bet, her friends said she wouldn’t be able to pull a champion,” George says. Hermione’s face hardens as she looks at me. She gets up quickly as her face scans the Great Hall before she disappears. 
“Where’s she going?” Fred asks. 
“No idea, should we follow her?” Harry asks. 
“No, probably not,” Ron replies. I get a bit more food before I drink my pumpkin juice. 
I make my way to the Transfigurations classroom. I push the door open to see Hermione already sitting at our table. Her face is hidden by her curly hair as she reads the book in front of her. I slide into my seat before I look to the front of the room. 
“You alright?” Hermione asks, not looking up from her book. 
“M’fine, H,” I say softly. 
“You’re not, you’re allowed to be upset,” she says as she places a hand on my arm. 
“You’re not gonna tell me you told me so?” I ask. 
“Well, of course not. You’re upset and I’m not going to exploit that because I was right,” Hermione says. I nod softly as I look at her. McGonagall makes her way to the front of the room. 
“Today’s class will be held in the Great Hall so we can have a discussion,” she says. “Everyone leave your things and follow me.” As we get there, every Gryffindor is in the room. I smile as I see the twins standing behind a bunch of chairs while leaning against the wall. “Ladies on the right, gentlemen on the left.” I scrunch my nose up as I move to sit on the other side. 
“What’s this about?” Angelina asks as I sit in front of her. 
“No clue,” I whisper back. 
“Today we will be discussing the Yule Ball. It’s directly connected to the tournaments. The house of Godric Gryffindor has been the most honorable and humble house around this time. I will not have you besmirching that name by acting like a babbling bumbling band of baboons!” McGonagall says. 
“Right, she’s obviously never been to a Gryffindor party,” I whisper with a smirk to Lina. She lets out a soft snicker as McGonagall shouts at Ron. 
“Mr. Weasley, please join me,” she says. Ron looks at her in shock as he stands up and walks over to her. “Please put your hand on my waist.”
“Where!” Ron screeches as he looks at her.
“On my waist, Mr. Weasley,” she repeats. Ron slowly puts his hand on her waist as McGonagall takes his other hand. She begins walking through a slow waltz as I cover my mouth to try to stop the laughs from bubbling out of me. 
“Oh I wish I had a camera,” I say in awe. I look to see Fred and George mockingly swaying back and forth. Hermione elbows me softly as she glares at me. 
“Now, I hope you gentlemen will each take a lady’s hand and ask her to dance,” Professor calls. The boys sit silently as I roll my eyes. I see Neville stand up as he offers his hand to Ginny. She smiles as she takes it and they begin to dance around. I smile softly as Ron walks over to me. 
“Your hand m’lady?” he says obnoxiously. I throw my head back in laughter as I grab his hand. 
“Of course m’lord,” I reply in the same voice. He pulls me up as his hand sets on my waist. We sway softly as he spins me. I let out a loud laugh as he dips me. “Wow, Weasley! You got some moves.”
“Oi! I’m not just a pretty face,” Ron winks. I shake my head with a smile as I lift his hand above his head. 
“Now, spin!” I laugh. 
“Absolutely not,” Ron says as he shakes his head. 
“Come on, Ronald!” I say as I wiggle his arm around. He rolls his eyes as he duck under our arms and spins. I grin brightly as I watch him. 
“Now you,” he smiles. He twirls me around as I let out a laugh. Ron tugs me back to his chest as we dance slowly. “So, when are you gonna tell ‘Mione you fancy her?” My eyes widen as I slap his chest. 
“What are you talking about?” I ask, my eyes pulling away from his gaze. 
“It’s painfully obvious, Y/N/N,” he teases. I groan as my head falls to lean on his shoulder. 
“I can’t tell her, she fancies Krum,” I replied as my head lifted off his shoulder to look at him. 
“You never know unless you try,” Ron sings. I roll my eyes as I look around the room. I see Hermione laughs loudly as Harry spins her around. My stomach fills with butterflies as I smile softly. “You’re absolutely smitten!” Ron laughs. 
“Oh, bugger off you git,” I mutter as we continue to dance. He grins at me as he spins me again. I let out a laugh as he dips me again.

Ron plops beside me as he lets out a loud groan. I shift my seat on the couch of our common room as I smile. “You alright Ronniekins?” I ask as I nudge his shoulder. 
“How the bloody hell am I meant to ask a girl to the ball! They’re always together in their scary groups, staring at us,” Ron says as he puts his head in his hands. 
“It’s not that hard, just ask someone,” I shrug. 
“Have you been asked yet?” Ron asks. I shake my head as my eyes scan the pages of my book. 
“I’m probably not going,” I say. 
“You’ve got to go!” Ron exclaims. 
“Why?” I ask. 
“If ‘Mione finds out you're saying that she’ll skin you alive!” Ron says as he sways us. 
“Is she going with someone?” I ask softly. 
“I have no idea. You know she wouldn’t tell Harry and I, we’d take the mickey out of her if she did,” Ron laughs softly. I nod in agreement as I put my feet on his lap.
I walk into the Great Hall for my study hour as I see Hermione sitting beside Ron and Harry. I sit across from them, next to the twins as Snape sets my workbook in front of me. I give him a tight lipped smile as I open it and begin to work. 
“Have you got a date yet, H?” Ron says as he turns to the brown-haired boy. 
“Not yet, it’s terrifying!” Harry exclaims in a hushed tone. 
“I know! How am I supposed to ask a girl when they’re always together!” The redhead whines. I let out a soft laugh as I look at the two. Fred tears a piece of parchment off as he scribbles on it and tosses it at his brother. Ron reads it before glaring at the older twin. “Right, who are you going with then!” Ron huffs in a whisper. Fred smirks at his brother before crumpling up another piece and tossing it at Angelina. 
“Oi! Lina!” Fred whisper-yells. Angelina’s head snaps towards him as she glares. “Will you,” he says as he points at her. “Go to the ball,” he continues as he mimics dancing. “With me,” he smirks as he points towards himself. 
“Yeah, alright then,” Angelia says with a small smile as she turns back to her work. Fred turns and shoots an overdramatic wink at Ron. I laugh softly as I shake my head. 
“Right, Hermione, Y/N, you both are girls! Come to the ball with us,” Ron laughs as he mimics Fred. Snape walks up behind him as he smacks him in the back of the head with a workbook. Ron winces as he rubs his head. I laugh with Harry as Hermione turns to look at him. 
“I have a date already,” Hermione says. 
“You what?” I say as my head snaps towards her. 
“Someone asked me, and I said yes,” she replies. 
“Who!?” I ask. 
“None of your business,” Hermione says coldly.
“I thought we were best mates!” I say in defense. 
“If I wanted you to know, don’t you think I would’ve told you by now!” Hermione says in a tone that mocked mine a few weeks ago. My face falls as I look at her. 
“Cool,” I say dryly as I turn back to my work. 
“Y/N, are you going to the ball?” Harry asks. 
“Probably not,” I say as I don’t look up from my work. 
“What?” Ron says slightly loudly. 
“Not going,” I say as I look up at the trio with a tight-lipped smile. 
“Yes you are,” Hermione says suddenly. 
“No, no I am not,” I say as I shake my head. 
“You have to!” Hermione argues. 
“No I don’t,” I laugh. 
“You are going. No arguing,” Hermione says. 
“We can go together,” Ron says as he waggled his eyebrows at me. 
“Fine,” I seethe. “Only because I don’t want Ronniekins looking pathetic at the ball.” Harry looks at me in shock as he gasps. 
“What about me!” He shrieks. Snape glares at us as I apologize. 
“You’ll find a date. You’re the chosen one. Every girl wants to get in your pants. Ron here is a little more awkward,” I reply. Harry grumbles quietly as I finish my work. I get up as I hand Snape my book and leave the room.

“You have a package,” Ginny tells me as she sets a long box on my bed. My face lights up as I move closer to the box. 
“It’s my dress!” I exclaim. I tug the top off the box as I look inside. I pull out a long  dark red dress. The skirt is bouncy and made of a soft tulle. It flows to the floor as I hold it up. The top is made out of a silky material, that was covered in shiny red beads and sequins. The straps are thin and cross in the back. The neckline is a wide V shape.
“Oh my god Bex! That’s gorgeous,” Ginny grins. “You’re gonna look so pretty!” 
“I hope so,” I say softly. There’s a pair of open-toed silver chunky heels, they’re covered in sparkles. It has a strap that goes across the top of your foot and one that fastens around your ankle. I dig around the box to find three smaller black boxes. The first box has a silver necklace with a silver rose as the pendent. The second has a pair of gorgeous earrings. They’re crystal dangle earrings. They look like frosty ice more than anything else. The final box is smaller, shaped more like a cube than anything. I open it to see the ring. It’s the same ring my mother wore everyday. It has been in our family for ages. I take it out and hold it between my fingers. It’s gold and has a tiara like design. There’s a small oval shaped red stone in the middle with two tiny pearls on the top and bottom. 
“That’s beautiful,” Ginny says softly. 
“It was my mum’s. It’s been passed down to the eldest girls in my family for generations. And it’s finally my turn,” I say as a smile breaks across my face. I made a mental note to write mum later. I hang my dress up so it doesn't wrinkle before putting the shoes and jewelry away safely.

Asshole. He was a complete nauseating asshole. Honestly you didn’t know why you let him get that much to you. You tried to breathe. That fucking man-child Sirius just ruined your notes. Those notes you spent so much time creating and what was his response again? Ooopsie.
“(Y/n), you’re really scary when you are angry.” Sirius said performing spells to repair the damage.
“Am I?” you scoffed. “Perhaps, if I would have been, people would not try to test me!”
“Hey calm down, chill, okay?” He said with a smirk that made you wish to rip his mouth. “Here’s your notes; as good as new.”
He looked smug at the moment, gesturing the notes towards you as if trying to calm a rabid dog. Argghhh. Maybe you would become one, Sirius was in fact capable of bringing out worst in people. You snatched your notes and went away with a huff.
“You can thank me later!” Sirius called after you.
He hated you. That had become a well known fact. Why? You had no idea. You remembered being actually friends with him once. Good friends. Then one day, he just turned cold. You had tried to talk to him. But between him ignoring you completely and him shouting, “Are you that dumb, I don’t want to talk to you; move along!!” in front of the great hall you got the message. You remember running into the washroom and crying your eyeballs out. After that you stopped talking to him. You still hung out with Remus and James. Whenever he would be in the group, he would sometimes make snarky remarks at you, or ignore you otherwise. You would reply back with a scoff or just roll your eyes and continue your conversation with others. It hurt, it really did; but you had mastered to not let it show.
It was the potions class. Professor Slughorn had placed a golden yellow potion in front of you all. It looked gorgeous. Bubbles burst around, making it look heavenly. You fidgeted in excitement. You knew what it was.  
“Can anyone tell me what this is?” the professor asked. You shot your hand up immediately.
“Yes, Miss (Y/l/n)?”
“Felix Felicis, also called "Liquid Luck", is a potion that makes the drinker lucky for a period of time, during which everything they attempt will be successful. It is meant to be used sparingly, however, as it causes giddiness, recklessness, and dangerous overconfidence if taken in excess.” You said in one breath.
“Oh, so you took it today before coming to class?” Sirius sneered and everyone rolled out laughing causing your cheeks to burn. You stared straight ahead not wanting to give anyone the satisfaction. You bit your tongue. Your mother taught you, bullies would always try to get on your nerves, to reply or remark back will only make them stronger.
“Be nice to them, it will have a far greater effect. Help everyone and never speak words full of hatred. Doing that you not only hurt the person you say it to but also yourself. We don’t get to choose people who come into our lives, they maybe good or bad. Most of them will disappoint you, hurt you; but you must remember- you are stronger. I am in no way am telling you to let people take advantage of your generosity. You will be stronger because you didn’t cause the same pain which made you want to kill them, smack them, kick them in the shins so they cry out.” You giggled. Your mother smiled.
“Let go. Move on. Ignore them. It takes strength, it’s a power that belongs only to the greatest of men.”
But urge to smack him right in the face so his jaw broke was so damn strong. You took a deep breath, in and out.
“Mr. Black! How dare you! You just insulted one of my best students. You need the potion much more than she does, even to pass this class! So, I would insist you to take out your book and start studying.”
You did not expect that. People around you snickered and snorted. You didn’t dare look at Sirius. You wanted to smile, but you couldn’t. You remembered him sitting for hours in the library with Remus to work on potions. Perhaps, this was a bit too harsh.

You were all sitting in the library, talking about the upcoming hogsmede weekend.
“My Lily flower here, has finally agreed to go out with me as a couple!” James said putting an arm around Lily. Lily blushed.
“Well, you did promise me anything I want from honeydukes.” She told him leaning into James embrace.
“(Y/n) what about you, got any plans?” Remus asked.
“You’re asking (Y/n)? I doubt she could get a date in a million years being the know it all, we all know she is.”
You sucked a breath. James and Remus glared at him and were ready to launch when someone put an arm around you.
“(Y/n), babe?” you turned to see Sebastian standing close behind you.
Sebastian and you were weird friends. You were completely honest with one-another, understanding each-others choices and flirted with each other for fun. You would definitely count him as one of your best friends.
“Guys can I borrow my girl for a moment?” Sebastian said flashing a grin towards your friends. My girl? What was he doing?
Everyone nodded and Sebastian took you a little away, but you were sure everyone could still see you. You raised an eyebrow at Sebastian when he placed his hands on the sides of your waist.
“Listen (Y/n), I heard that ass-hole talk shit about and I couldn’t help it. You’re one of prettiest, kindest girls in school and I would have taken you out any day but that would just have complicated things between us.”
He was helping you?
“God! Am I that pathetic?” You said looking away not sure what felt worse.
Sebastian rolled his eyes and scoffed. “I am just going to assume you didn’t say that. Really? You believing that piece of shit now?”
You let out a small laugh smiling at Sebastian.
“You’re the best!” you said sniffing.
“Of course I am! I am bloody perfect, darling!” he said kissing your cheek.
“Okay, so you are coming with me next hogsmede weekend. We’ll show those fuckers what a perfect couple looks like.” He said with a glint in his eyes.
You laughed.
“Is that so, honey?” you said playing with his tie.
“Oh yes, baby girl!” he said with a wink, leaving.
Unknowns’ to you Sirius watched your interaction with Sebastian with narrowed eyes and a clenched jaw. He hated it. He hated himself. He was in love with you since the 2nd year and in the process of realizing it he panicked. He thought maybe if he was mean to you, you would hate him and return the favor. But you never did. You continued to behave civilly to him and even came forward to help him when he was struggling. And how did he repay you? By being an ass. His heart clenched every single time he teased you to get on your nerves and his stomach twisted in knots. He could never have you. Not someone as sweet as you.

You were going through the corridors when you heard shouts. You turned and sprinted towards their direction. You saw Avery and Mulciber dueling with Sirius. They shot a spell towards him and he fell back.
“Expelliamus!!” you shouted and caught their wands. They widened their eyes.
“You’ll get these back from Slughorn” you said in a sharp tone that left no arguments. They huffed and walked away. You turned towards Sirius. Shit he was bleeding.
“Fuck- that’s a nasty cut Sirius!” you said concerned. You concentrated and performed some healing spells. Sirius watched you intensely.
“This is going to sting, okay?” you said to Sirius but all he did was stare with an expression you couldn’t quite place. So, you returned to patching him up, trying not to squirm under his gaze.
He hissed. You gulped and tried not to shake. After you finished, you helped him stand. You looked at him and noticed he was still watching you.
“I’m gonna go and give these to Slughorn,” you said indicating the wands. “You go back to the common room and eat something, preferably chocolate.”
“Why?” he said his eyes not leaving you.
“Why what?” you asked confused.
“Why did you help me, even though I am so awful to you?” he asked.
You huffed. So, that is what this is about. As angry you were at him all the time, you couldn’t see him being beaten mercilessly.
“I am a prefect. I am supposed to stop fights.” You said as you turned to leave.
“I’m sorry” he called out loud. You turned and said, “What?”
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for being the biggest pile of dip-shit you’ve ever seen. For every single mean comment I said not meaning it. I’m sorry for being a pain in the ass, for being so bloody damn rude even though all you’ve ever been was sweet to me.”
You stared at him. He was apologizing?
“You’re a great person (Y/n), I don’t think I’ve seen anyone match your beauty or your wit. You’re so generous that I sometimes wonder if it’s humanely possible, whether you’re real. You help anyone and everyone if they need it, never asking anything in return. And I’m grateful and thankful for how you’ve treated me and am insanely humiliated at my own behavior.” Sirius huffed. It felt like every single thing he had pent up was coming out. He wanted to shout, to scream, to let this wonderful girl standing near him know, know that she was amazing, that he was sorry, that he… he liked her so damn much it had started to hurt him. Breathing deeply he looked at her.
You were stunned. You didn’t know what to say. Your ex-friend was giving you all these praises and compliments and sincerely apologizing for being a goddamn git. You knew for a fact that the word “sorry” never came out of Sirius’s mouth; not even for teachers.
“Well, say something?” Sirius said in a small voice.
“I don’t know what to say. You’ve been so rude to me since so many years that I started to be disappointed on just seeing you. Now, you’re saying all these things, which are flattering but, how could I forgive you in just one day? How could I forget what you did to me?”
“Don’t. I want to ask for a chance, to remedy what I did wrong. I know it can’t be done overnight, but I’ll makeup for it eventually. I promise.” He said sincerely.
“Work for it. If I think you're as sincere and want my friendship as much as you say, I'll give you a chance. Not a moment before.” You said. Sirius nodded slowly. You took a deep breath turning and leaving. What did you just agree to?

Jo pushed open the gate to Meredith’s backyard and was greeted with the sight of the socially distant Thanksgiving dinner in full swing. It might be the holidays, but there was a rise of COVID in the past few weeks and the governor had shut down the state. Despite how the group was constantly tested at work, none of them were willing to take any risks for an inside formal dinner. Which meant that tables were 6 feet apart, plates of food were already set out, and masks were required. Jo didn’t mind the outdoor activities, even with the November air as her pregnancy meant that she often ran hot. 
Amelia and Link were at one table with her godson, the three kids and Meredith were painting at one table. Maggie and Winston were off to the side, and Jackson, April, and Harriett were at the third table. The last table was for her and Alex, Meredith had already set out plates for them that were already filled with turkey, stuffing, casseroles, and Amelia’s pie.
“Hey, Aunt Jo,” Zola said, being the first one to greet her and waved at her with her paintbrush still in her hand. She wore a white and purple butterfly mask that matched her butterfly coat.
Everyone else followed Zola’s hello with waves as Jo walked up to the only empty table. Link bounded over like a puppy and hugged her as tightly as he could with her full belly between them. The two of them had been together for most of the pandemic with her and Alex helping them with Scout and Link and Amelia returning the favor to help with Jo’s pregnancy.
“Where’s Uncle Alex?” Zola asked holding up her turkey painting to show Jo. 
“That looks very cool Zola and he is on his way. He had a meeting so he's just running a little late,” Jo said as she put a hand on her belly and eased herself into the lawn chair and put her feet up on Alex's empty chair. “I see you all left me the good chair.” 
“Yeah well the rest of us didn’t want to hear you complain about it for the entire night,” Amelia said, sending Jo a wink.
“I did not complain last time!” Jo insisted, looking over at Link who just looked at her wide eyed.
Jo knew that Link’s mouth was open under his mask as he was trying to find something to say to her before retreating back over to Amelia. 
Ellis grabbed a plate of paint and dragged her cat chair to Jo. “Aunt Jo, can I paint your belly?” 
“What?”
“She wants to paint your baby belly,” Meredith clarified for her, handing Bailey a plate of food. “She saw a picture of someone doing it online and now all she talks about is painting your belly.”
Jo looked back down at Ellis who looked up at her with the biggest puppy eyes and Jo knew that she was pouting under her mask. Jo smiled and nodded, how could she refuse Ellis’ request. Jo put her feet down and grabbed a pillow, putting it behind her back before she pulled up her shirt and tucking it under her breasts. Ellis giggled and grabbed her brush to paint a streak across Jo's belly. Jo shivered at the cold paint, but the feeling of Ellis’s brush was oddly soft and Jo found herself relaxing back as Ellis painted. 
The party continued and the conversation flowed. It had been a while since everyone had gotten together outside the hospital, especially with the kids and it was nice to relax and enjoy the night. 
“Oh that’s so cute,” Jo said as Link handed her a small canvas of one of her godson’s baby bumpkins. “I can’t wait to do that with this baby.” 
Jo smiled as she stared over at Amelia and her godson. Back when she and Link were serving coffee, just trying to make it through college. They talked about how their kids would grow up together and be friends. They would be each other’s family. After Jo left, she didn’t think she’d ever see him again, but she was so glad he came to Grey-Sloan and gave her a second chance.
“Yeah, it does make a good keepsake for Christmas too,” Link said, smiling back over at Amelia and the baby as well.
“Nuh-uh,” Jo mumbled, shaking her head as she took a bit of the nacho that she had dumped hot sauce on. “I’m having this baby tonight.”
Immediately all eyes were on her. 
“You're in labor!” Meredith shouted standing up and pulling out her phone, no doubt to call Alex.
“You're in labor!” Maggie freaked out as she dropped Zola’s painting.
“The baby’s coming today!” Zola cheered her eyes sparkling as she raced over to them.
“The baby’s coming!” Ellis shrieked, putting both of her hands on Jo’s belly that was still wet with paint.
“Oh my god, Jo why didn’t you say anything?” Link said, dropping down to his knees and putting a hand on her shoulder.
“No, I’m not in Labor,” Jo shouted above the noise.
“Josephine Brooke Karev are you still trying to induce labor a week before your due date?”
“Uncle Alex!” All the kids screamed, so excited to see him, they all talked over each other as they showed him their paintings. 
“For heaven's sake Jo,” Link said, his eyes wide as he sat down on the grass leaning on the arm of her chair. “Between you and Amelia, the stress is gonna kill me.”
“Why would you want to have your baby today?” Meredith asked, moving her chair over to sit next across from Jo.
“Well, our anniversary is Halloween. I just thought I’d keep with the theme, that way we'd always remember and it’d be extra special,” Jo said, with a shrug as she felt the baby kick inside her as if they were agreeing. 
“Regardless of the date it will be special, trust me. You're never going to forget your baby's birthday because it's also your labor day,” Meredith said her eyes sparkling and Jo knew that she was smirking over at her.
“I know, but I just thought I'd be fun,” Jo said, putting a hand on her baby belly where Ellis hadn’t painted, feeling them kick again as she turned to see Alex talking to the kids. 
He was nodding along to everything they were telling him and acting like Bailey's messy painted turkey was the greatest piece of artwork he's ever seen. She loved seeing Alex with all the kids so much that she didn’t mind being second best to her husband. He was so good to them, always listening to them talk and going along with whatever they wanted. She couldn't wait to see him with their kid and she knew that they already had them wrapped around their finger. 
“I painted Aunt Jo’s belly!” Ellis said putting her paint covered hands on Alex’s shirt. 
“And now we match,” Alex said looking down at his nice button up shirt to see two small handprints.
Jo laughed as Alex looked down at the sight of his ruined shirt. Meredith got up and took Ellis inside to wash her hands and Alex sat down next to her. He pulled down his mask to greet her with a kiss and settled in. Jo grabbed another bite of her pineapple spicy nachos and Alex took a piece from her plate.
“Hey,” Jo said, pulling the plate away from him.
“Sorry,” Alex laughed before feeding her the chip. 
Jo thought that he would have long since learned not to get between a pregnant woman and her food, but apparently not. 
Alex’s eyes turned serious as he looked over at her. “How are you feeling?” 
“My heartburn is better than it was this morning, my braxton hicks haven't been as intense as they were yesterday, and I did a hepatectomy on a guy who almost burnt down his house trying to cook a turkey with Jackson,” Jo said in between bites of her nachos.
“Yeah I’m surprised I got here before you,” Jackson said as he held Harriett and offered her a bite of green beans. “You finished the resection before I was done debriding his wounds.”
“I scrubbed in on a surgical extraction with Dr. Bailey right after,” Jo said with a laugh, remembering the case. “Some guy shoved a corn husk up you know where.”
“A corn husk?” Meredith asked in disbelief. “I can’t believe I missed that!”
“You can scrub in with me next year after COVID is cured and you can come back to work.”
“I’ll hold you to it, Karev.”
“It sounds like you had a good day,” Alex said, leaving in to wrap his arm around her shoulders.
“I did.” 
Jo could see Alex smile under his mask as his eyes wrinkled and sparkled. Jo leaned in and pressed a masked kiss to his cheek. Alex chuckled, squeezed her shoulder as she leaned in and put her head on his shoulder. 
They watched the kids paint and ate too much of April's pumpkin pie and stayed long after the kids fell asleep as the alcohol came out for the adults. It was the first time they had all congregated outside of the hospital and no one was eager to leave. Her sober buddy, Amelia, came to sit next closer to her, and Jo cooed at her godson, gushing over his cute little baby cheeks even after he fell asleep. 
The cold night air set in and soon they were all bundling up in blankets, but no one wanted to head home first. Jo put the baby down inside and curled up against Alex as her braxton hicks started up again. She didn't mean to fall asleep but the next thing she knew Alex was shifting against her and pulling her onto her feet and putting one arm around her as he half carried her to the car, Jo mumbled goodbye to everyone. 
Jo fell asleep in the car and she didn't remember getting into bed, but the next thing she knew it’s 4 a.m. and she's waking up with a braxton hick. She rolled over in bed realizing that Alex changed her into pajamas. Jo’s not sure if it's because she was exhausted or what but, as soon as it passed she rolled over and fell asleep again. 
Somewhere around sunrise, just as the sun was shining into the windows, Jo got up with another braxton hick. She knew that moving helped and she had to pee anyway, but Jo only made it to the table behind the couch before she felt a trickle of water run down her leg. At first, she thought she had an accident, but the trickle of water just kept coming as Jo tried to clean herself up. Then she realized it was amniotic fluid. Her water broke. 
Jo turned around to wake up Alex, but before she could she doubled over in pain as her next contraction started. She knew that her contractions would increase in pain after her water broke that this was on a whole different level. 
Jo leaned against the table she tried to call out to Alex but she can’t speak. She was frozen in place until it passed. She knew that these weren't braxton hick, these were contractions, she was in labor. When she felt like she could move again Jo looked back at Alex, but she couldn't manage to call out to him. Instead, Jo got out her phone and pulled up her contacts, she blindly pressed Alex’s name and waited to hear his phone ring. Instead, she heard someone else answer her call.
“Hey Jo, what’s up” 
Meredith’s voice was music to her ears. Jo opened her eyes and shook her head as she looked down at the phone. Jo was so relieved to see her friend. Although she had originally planned to just call Alex, it seemed she had set up a video call with Meredith. Because of the restriction, Jo couldn't have anyone other than Alex with her when she gave birth. Despite her initial plan to have Meredith with her, they had agreed to have Meredith be there over video call to support her through it. In the midst of a contraction she could barely speak, but Meredith seemed to know exactly what was going on.
“Are you in labor?” 
Jo nodded, closing her eyes and swaying her hips, she wasn't sure why but somehow it seemed to help.
“How long have you been having contractions?” 
“I don't know,” Jo said, blowing out a breath as the contraction passed. “A few hours maybe.”
“What do you mean maybe?” Meredith asked, glaring at her. “When did the pain start?” 
“Before I went to bed last night I think.” 
“So you've been in labor for six hours, Jo how did you ignore this?” Meredith said as she rubbed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her nose
“I have a high pain tolerance, and I'm used to sleeping through the pain and I was really tired,” Jo said, the memories of when she used to fall asleep after Paul beat her were not once she liked to remember, but as a result, Jo often ignored her pain out of habit.
“Well, where's Alex? He should have been keeping an eye on you.”
“Alex he's …” Jo shook her head, and trailed off as she had another contraction.
“Do you need me to get Alex?”
Jo nodded, the contraction had passed but she was so exhausted and let Meredith help her.
“Okay, hang on Jo I'm going to call him from a second phone,” Meredith reassured her as Jo heard her stuff laying around on the other end of the phone. “Amelia gimme your phone Jo’s in labor.”
Jo chuckled as Meredith continued to harass Amelia for her phone. Ever since Meredith had recovered from COVID she had been working from home and harassing them all via phone call. Especially her as Jo continue their work on the mini-livers from their lab at the hospital. 
“Okay, I'm calling him now.” 
Jo looked back at Alex who was still sleeping peacefully in their bed. The blanket was pulled back on her side and his arm was laying over her pillow leaving the impression of an empty space where she had been. Alex had that evening morning scruff that she loved and his lips were parted as he snored. He was completely oblivious to how his world was going to change in a few hours. 
Alex’s phone rang, the sound bouncing around the apartment. He rolled over and reached for his nightstand, cursing as he looked for his phone. Another contraction distracted her from calling out to him, but she heard him silence his phone and roll over again.
“Jo, Meredith is calling you.”
“No, I'm calling you,” Meredith yelled at him through Jo's phone. “Your wife is in labor Karev, get the hell up.”
Jo looked over to see Alex sit up and stared at her. He blinked once and then twice before he scrambled to get up, getting tangled in the blankets and tripping several times before he made it over to her.
“You're in labor?”
“Yes,” Jo and Meredith yelled at the same time.
“We’re having a baby!” 
“Yes, we're having a baby!”
“Okay well let’s go,” Alex said and Jo could see it on his face as he went from paranoid dad to helpful husband. “Let’s have a baby.”
“Let’s have a baby.” Jo smiled as Alex kissed her before another contraction hit and she closed her eyes in pain. They were for sure having a baby today. Happy Thanksgiving to her.
“How far apart are the contractions?”
“Every four minutes,” Meredith answered for her.
“Has your water broken?” 
“Not that I can tell.” 
“Jo?” Alex asked looked down to check, but Jo shook her head.
“Okay, let's check how dilated you are, but regardless we're going to head to the hospital. I'll call Carina and tell her to have a room waiting for us.” Alex said as he put his arms around her waist and Jo heavily leaned in on him.
Alex helped her over to the bed and Jo laid down, sinking into the mattress. Another contraction hit and Jo closed her eyes taking a deep breath and slowly letting it out. 
“That’s it Jo, deep breaths, you're doing so good,” Alex praised her as he held her hand, and mirrored her breaths.
Jo felt the tears collect in her eyes and Alex spoke, she was so thankful that he was there cheering her on. He had been so supportive through her pregnancy. He braided her hair and rubbed her back when she puked. He tied her shoes and helped her reach for things. He rubbed her back and her feet when they ached, and he talked to their baby when they kicked her ribs. When the contraction passed and Jo opened her eyes to see Alex smiling down at her. She sighed and relaxed as he leaned forward and kissed her.
“He is right, you're doing everything like you're supposed to, you're doing great Jo,” Meredith said, from where Jo had left her phone propped up on the table.
Jo returned their smiles and squeezed Alex’s hand. “I’m having a baby.”
“You are, and you're handling it like a champ,” Alex said, moving back and putting a hand on her knees, Jo saw his face shift from proud and supportive husband to concerned doctor. “Your contractions are pretty close together. Can I check and see how dilated you are now.”
Jo nodded and lifted up her hips as he pulled off her pajama pants. Jo put her feet up by her hips and let her knees fall apart. Alex waited for her to nod before he checked her cervix, despite how many times they had sex, he always waited for her consent. Alex quickly checked her and then smiled looking down at her.
“Jo, have you felt the need to push?”
“No, why?” she asked, confused as she pushed herself up on her elbows. He had pulled back his hand, but didn't give her back her pants.
“You’re about 9 cm dilated, but we should get to the hospital before you have this baby in the car,” Alex said as he patted her knee and got up. “I’m gonna grab your bag and stuff and put it in the car then come back for you.”
“Oh my god!” Jo shouted as she sat up and watched Alex run around their apartment.
“Hey it’s okay Jo, just take a deep breath,” Meredith said, Leaning into the phone so Jo could see her whole face.
Jo nodded and took a deep breath, knowing that panicking wouldn't get her anywhere, and put a hand on her belly. She couldn't feel her baby kick, only the contractions that seemed endlessly painful. After a few deep breaths, she held herself calm back down and had to open her eyes and look back at Meredith who greeted her with a nod.
“Wait Alex, give me Meredith,” Jo shouted as she heard him open the door.
Alex stopped everything and grabbed the phone before handing it to her and running off again. Jo just smiled as she watched him go, running around like a mad dad, panicked as she labor. After everything they had been through, he was still so excited and nervous for their baby.
Another contraction hit and Jo closed her eyes, tuning out everything as Meredith talked her through it and Alex ran around with the bags. Finally, he came back and helped her down the stairs, and into the car. 
Jo barely remembered the car ride to the hospital. In between her contraction, Meredith and Alex talked to her and tried to distract her. She was so exhausted and could barely think as Alex and Meredith prompted her to move and breathe when they got to the hospital. It sort of worked, but it was all just a blur as they got her up to a room.
“Hello Jo,” Carina said that she came into the room rubbing fresh hand sanitizer over her hands before she reached for a pair of gloves. “I wasn't expecting to see you so soon.”
“I need to push,” Jo shouted, already bearing down, this baby was coming now, regardless of whether anyone was ready for them or not.
“Now!” Alex shouted in disbelief. “Shit we should have been here hours ago.”
“She said now!” Meredith insisted, yelling through the phone.
“You don’t have to do that you know,” Alex said, as he crawled in behind her, rather than push on her back they had her upright and Jo sat on the end of the bed while Alex held her up and squeezed both of her hands. 
“Jo wants me to advocate for her, this is me advocating.”
“Okay Jo push on the next contraction,” Carina said, shutting them both up as she got ready to catch the baby in between Jo’s legs.
Jo closed her eyes and tried to breathe as another contraction hit and she pushed with every bit of energy she had left. It felt like an endless circle of pain and pushing, then a break, and then more pain and pushing. She was so exhausted and she couldn't imagine doing this for an endless amount of hours. 
“You're doing great Jo, just a little bit longer and they're gonna be here,” Alex whispered in her ear.
“He’s right Jo. Everything is perfect and your little bambino is going to be here very soon,” Carina said giving her a short nod. 
Jo pushed for what seemed like hours and then Carina was announcing she could see the head. Jo knew that she had to keep going and pushed again and suddenly her baby was out and Carina held them up for them to see. 
The second their baby cried, Jo's heart stopped as Carina held up this tiny little red baby screened in their ears. Jo pulled down her gown so they could do some skin to skin and Carina quickly placed them on Jo’s chest. Jo's arm instantly moved to cradle them and she leaned back against Alex as the tears filled her eyes. She and her baby's cries filled the room. 
“She's so beautiful,” Alex sobbed on her shoulder as he wrapped his arms around them both. 
“It's a girl,” Jo said in astonishment, she looked down to where the baby laid in her arms and their daughter looked up at them with big eyes as her cries quieted. 
“Alex do you want to cut the cord?”
Alex nodded and moved to cut the cord, taking the surgical scissors from the nurse. Meredith took a few pictures and Jo was glad she had asked her to beforehand because all she could focus on was the beautiful little girl in her arms.
Jo looked down at her beautiful, perfect daughter and moved to stroke her cheek. She hardly noticed the nurses cleaning her and taking their daughter’s Apgar scores. All she could think about was a perfect little baby in her arms. For her, falling in love was a gradual process, but Jo loved their baby from the moment she found out she was pregnant and she was so overwhelmed with love for her baby as she stared down at them.
Jo looked over at Alex as he moved out from behind her to stand next to her. As all the nurses attended to her and the baby. He looked so nervous as he stared down at her shifting his weight on his feet and stuffing his hands into his pockets. It was so unusual to see him so concerned and nervous. 
Jo looked down at their daughter, she’d had her for nine months and although it felt like she had only been holding her for a few minutes, Jo was sure that she was ready to watch Alex hold their baby for the first time. 
“Do you want to hold her?” Jo whispered, already moving the blanket that had been placed over both of them to loosely swaddle her and transferred their daughter into her chest.
Alex just nodded and took off his shirt so they could do skin to skin, then held out his arms for their daughter. Once she placed her in his arms, Alex slowly sank down in the chair next to her bed. He held her close to his chest before he seemed to remember how to hold a baby and cradled her in his arms as he relaxed back into the chair. She watched as Alex just gazed down at her with an expression of pure love. 
Jo could tell by the way that his eyes sparkled that he was smiling down at their daughter under his mask. Tears collected his eyes and a few escaped the corner of his eyes as he whispered to her. The baby opened her eyes and squirmed, crying out for a moment before Alex soothes her as he began to rock in the chair. The baby flailed her arms out and Alex reached out to hold one of her hands as her tiny hand wrapped around his big finger.
Jo finished pushing out the placenta and laid back onto the bed before Alex put their daughter back on her chest and put the blanket over both of them. Jo just stared down at her in amazement. She was so perfect, from her tiny little forehead to the thick tufts of dark hair. She stretched out her legs, kicking Jo before she curled back up into a tiny little ball and closed her eyes.
“She’s perfect,” Jo said to Alex, not taking her eyes off her daughter. “Even if her big head caused me a second degree tear.”
“Sorry about,” Alex said, sliding in to sit next to her.
“Well you and her big Karev heads are perfect and I can’t feel anything down there anyway,” Jo’s legs felt like mush and she couldn't tell how many stitches Carina was doing.
Alex wrapped an arm around her shoulders leaning in to kiss her cheek. Jo turned and tilted her head to give him a proper kiss. 
“You did so good Jo, I'm so proud of you and she is absolutely beautiful,” Meredith said with a smile as they all look down at the baby. “I’m gonna let you two enjoy your baby and I’ll send you the pictures I took in a few minutes.” 
“Thank you,” Jo said as she looked over at Meredith who smiled.
“It was my pleasure,” Meredith said, tilting her head as she looked down at the baby. “Besides if it wasn’t for me you would still be laboring in the loft and Alex would be fast asleep.”
“Har har,” Alex said as Jo laughed. 
“But you Jo Karev,” Meredith said turning a pointed finger at her. “You have to keep remembering to watch your braxton hicks and not sleep through your labor until your nine centimeters dilated!”
“Meredith is right Jo, your labor progressed very quickly without you realizing it,” Carina said, as she set Jo with a look. “Next time, I want to see you in here as soon as your braxton hicks are consistent for more than an hour. I'd rather send you away with false labor then put you or your baby at risk.
“Yeah, we can’t have the next one on the couch in our living room,” Alex added, kissing her forehead.
“I know I said I wanted two kids, but let's not talk about a second one until my vagina starts hurting from having the first one,” Jo said as she glared at him as Alex turned to look down at their baby girl.
“She needs a name,” Alex said, changing the subject as he trailed a finger across her little hand as she wiggled her fingers.
“Meredith does make a really good name,” Meredith sang, raising her eyebrows and giving them a look.
“We'll take it into consideration,” Jo said looking back at Alex. They had a list of names they were still arguing over, some of the names were new, but others were after friends and family.
Meredith ended the call and most of the nurses left, it was just them and Carina, who was finishing the last of Jo’s stitches. The baby fussed, turning her head and opening her mouth, signaling that she was hungry. Jo moved her down and Carina helped her and the baby get a good latch on her breast. Soon their baby was making happy little eating noises as her parents smiled down at her.
“She does need a name,” Alex whispered to her, setting his head on her shoulder and he looked down at their daughter as she nursed. 
“You know which one I like.”
“I know,” Alex sighed, looking away from her.
“You should call her,” Jo said, turning to look at him as he gazed off into space. “Call her and then decide, and if you still don't want the name. we can choose a different one.”
“Okay.” Alex nodded and kissed her shoulder as they turned their attention back to their baby girl.
After their daughter finished eating and Carina finished her stitches, Alex ran to grab her some food from the cafeteria. Jo chatted with Meredith again for a few minutes about the pictures before Alex came back and they ate. He put on a movie some kind of Christmas movie that Jo wasn't really interested in so she closed her eyes. She must have fallen asleep and slept for a few hours only to be woken up by Carina and the nurses checking on her. 
It’s still later in the early afternoon but the closed blinds and curtains made it seem like night and it was easy for her to close her eyes. She stared at the baby in Alex's arms before she fell asleep again and when Jo woke up and the baby was in the bassinet next to her bed. She reached out an arm to lay a hand on her chest feeling the baby breathing under her hand and fell back asleep. 
When Jo woke up again she heard Alex talking faintly on the phone again. The baby was not under her hand and for a moment Jo panicked, she looked around the room and she saw Alex holding the baby in a football hold, as he rocked back and forth with his back to her. Jo relaxed and closed her eyes as she listened to the baby gurgle and coo as Alex talked on the phone. 
“Yeah, thanks Mom, we can’t wait for you to see her,” Alex said as he walked back over and sat down next to her. Jo blinked and caught his eyes and he smiled at her. “Hang on Jo’s awake, let me give her the baby.”
Alex set the phone down and unswaddle the baby before setting her on Jo’s chest. The baby settled on Jo as she put a hand on her back tracing her spine and noting her clean skin. While she was asleep, Alex and the nurses must have bathed her and they put her in a plain hospital hat and onesie and Jo safely tucked those away for safekeeping. Jo reached over to the bag on the chair next to her and pulled out the little turkey onesie along with a dark orange hat to match. 
Jo sat the bed up and put the baby on her lap as she changed her clothes, the baby slept through the whole thing and Jo pulled her close to whisper to her daughter. She tried out the names they had on their list, including Meredith, and just as she expected, the name Jo wanted for her fit. 
Jo looked up at Alex as he finished the call with his mom and smiled at him as he put down his phone and came to sit down next to her. “She needs a name. We can't just call her baby forever.”
“I know,” Alex said, looking down at the baby as Jo shook her head. 
“Let's try them all out and see which one fits,” Jo said, she knew that Alex was still hesitant, but that he would know that the moment he heard it and connected the name to the sight of their daughter. 
“Okay, hello Stephanie,” Alex said looking down at their daughter before he shook his head. Jo chuckled, she knew Stephanie would be disappointed, like Meredith they had considered the name as they wanted her to be named after someone they loved, but it just didn't fit. “Okay, you do the next one.”
“Alright, hello Meredith or Edith for short,” Jo said to her, it was the name Alex wanted and Jo liked it too. Meredith meant so much to them and they had agreed to have it as her middle name regardless, but it wasn’t her first name.
“You're right, it doesn't fit,” Alex said as he sighed and leaned back into the chair.
“No,” Jo said looking down at the baby in her arms. She took Alex's hand and pulled it over to hold their daughter's hands that had wiggled out from the swaddle. “Her name is Helena, after your mom and Mrs. Schmidt.”
Alex smiled as he looked down at their daughter and rubbed the back of her hand. “Yeah, she's Helena.”
“Helena,” Jo said as their daughters fluttered open and she stared up at them.
Alex's phone lit up with a video call from Meredith. He looked over at Jo, they had agreed to the video call beforehand, and although Jo hadn't had any time to shower or even wash her face she knew none of them would care and nodded as he answered the call. They were greeted with the sight of their family. Meredith, Amelia, Lincoln, Maggie, Winston, Jackson, April, Ben, Bailey, Richard, all the kids, and even Levi and Helm joined the call. Everybody cooed and gushed over the baby and the kids talked about how excited they were.
“Have you two decided on a name yet?” Meredith asked as everybody went silent waiting for them to respond.
“Guys say hello to Helena Meredith Karev.”

“I got it.” 
You reached out for the plates Sam held in his hands, giving him a polite smile as you did. He returned it and carefully handed them over to you, being cautious so as not to drop the multiple cups in his other hand.
“Thanks, kiddo.” He said, to which you smiled brighter before turning around and walking over to your best friend and Sam’s only daughter-- Avery. Sam was hot on your heels to the kitchen and you placed all the dishes in the sink for you and Ave to clean up. 
You smiled to yourself when you saw Sam giving his daughter a quick kiss on the cheek, which made her groan in embarrassment but giggle when her dad made fun of her. It's always been like that. You’d sleep over at their place for the weekends and help around the house after dinner. It was a tradition that you’d kept ever since kindergarten, back when Sam and your father were friends, before the asshole completely bailed out on you and your mother when you were quite young. Sam had your mom’s back throughout the years, with family court, some expenses she couldn’t handle, finding her a job, taking care of you when she was working late. They were like brother and sister and you grew to be Sam’s second daughter, but as soon as you hit sixteen, spending time around Sam became for the sole purpose of just..
Being around him. 
You didn’t know how or why it happened, but ever since that whole month he’d spent picking you up from highschool with his daughter to go over to their place, make dinner for you, and struggle with calculus, you felt those butterflies in your stomach whenever he’d call you “sweetheart” or kiss your forehead or give you the warmest of smiles. He did the same thing with his daughter, but you weren’t his daughter and, since that month, Sam became the epitome of the man you’ve always been dreaming of. 
He was funny, spontaneous, had a heart of gold, but jokes as dirty as the bottom of his worn out Timberlands that only added to his rugged charm. He was supportive, understanding, and showed unadulterated love and passion towards his daughter-- towards bringing her up. Granted, he was stubborn and had a bit of a temper and rarely ever listened to the voice of reason, but those traits all came with the ‘pure-hearted man’ package. 
And when you went to college with Avery and the two of you got a summer job outside of Boston, you found yourself missing the man during the entirety of the summer that you’d spent away from him and when he’d facetime you and Avery, you’d stay up talking to him about movies, books, your job, how your day went. He cared for you like a daughter and while that was frustrating for you for a couple of months, you found out that as long as you were around him, that was enough. As long as he loved and cared for you, that was enough. You were no longer interested in having a much older man wrapped around your finger. You didn’t know how he might react but you were sure he was going to lecture you about how you were too young. How him and your parents had been friends for over two decades. That you were like a daughter to him, nothing more. You could literally feel the red hot waves of embarrassment creeping up your neck with the mere thought of confessing to the man who constantly drove you crazy with the simplest of gestures.
But you swallowed your tongue and bottled up your more-than-likely teenage hormones and never told anyone about your feelings. Nobody knew. Not even Avery. Especially not Avery. You weren’t prepared to lose your childhood best friend over emotions that’d eventually fade. And you weren’t prepared to lose the only “father-figure” in your life, either. 
So, there you were: Cleaning the dishes while chatting about random subjects with Sam and Avery. Your mind and heart were heavy, but you weren’t willing to ruin the few days off you had in Boston with your family. Your mom was in New Jersey-- too busy with work to drop everything to come and see you. It was upsetting, but those two made everything better for you.
You looked over your shoulder when Sam called out to both of you from the living room and, coincidentally, you’d just finished drying the last dish. You and Avery exchanged looks before chuckling.
“He sounds excited..” You commented, to which Avery rolled her eyes with a smile she couldn’t conceal.
“His video game just got here..” She nonchalantly said, but that caused your eyes to widen slowly before you dropped the rag from your hand.
“What video game?” 
“Uhh..” She pulled on a thinking face, “Dead.. Red.. Somethin’ -- I dunno, dude.” 
In a flash, you were out of the kitchen and on the couch, right next to Sam, who looked at you with a grin which you returned with a bright smile, “You ready?” 
You sighed and shook your head, “Ready to watch you fail miserably at this.” 
“Oh, that is-- That’s not fair.” He laughed lightly while you waited for the game to install data. He’d turned to you when he said that, faking defeat. You smiled and shook your head, looking down at your hands.
God, he was so perfect. The way the corners of his eyes tugged up when he smiled. His wrinkles. His bright, warm, hazel eyes that held both strength and tenderness. 
Nope. You weren't getting over that man anytime soon. And when you snapped back from staring at him, you found him staring back at you silently, his eyes jumping from yours and to your lips and then you felt it.
That spark. 
His smile softened and some perverse area in your brain convinced you that he was leaning closer. Or maybe you were and he stayed still because he wanted this as much as you did.
"You guys again.." Avery sighed as she plopped on the lazy boy chair next to the couch, her eyes on the TV screen. 
Sam cleared his throat and looked down at his lap, rubbing his sweaty hands against his thighs and you looked down at your hands that were nestled between your thighs, biting down on your lip to contain a girly giggle. 
"What is it with you two and video games?" Avery asked, resting her head back on the back of the chair. 
You turned to her, immediately perking up at her words. You then sighed and sat back with an eye roll, "Your daughter is such a disappointment.." You muttered to Sam, who shook his head in fake dismay, clicking his tongue.
"She can take that attitude to the orphanage." He joked, which made you look at him with furrowed brows, a surprised laugh leaving you.
"Har‐Har. Very funny." She rolled her brown eyes at the both of you, crossing her arms when her dad sent her a wink and mouthed an 'I love you', "You two just have fun and I.." She stood up from her place, "Am gonna crash." She stretched her arms up with a groan and a yawn afterwards, reaching under her pyjama top to scratch her stomach.
"Alright, baby, g'night." Sam called out, receiving a wave-off from his daughter, "I love you!" He called out with an amused grin.
"You're not gettin' one back, old man." She called back from the top of the staircase that led to her room. Her response made Sam laugh lightly. 
You looked at him when he did, soaking in his infuriatingly good looks. You couldn't help but smile when he shook his head and leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees, the controller in his hands and his eyes glued to the TV.
"Ready?” He asked, sending you a grin and a small eyebrow raise, as if he was challenging you.
You raised a brow at him in the same fashion and nudged his shoulder with your fist, grinning back, “Ready to see your ass getting kicked, y'old geezer.”
Sam rolled his eyes and focused on the TV and you could see his little smile from the corner of your eyes, only to see it falter as he looked at the controller and back at the TV repeatedly, “Uhh..”
You looked down at the controller to see that the blue light wasn’t emitting from the front, which meant he was disconnected. You smirked as you watched him struggle and button-mash with a questioning look on his face.
“Either you’re really exhausted or you really don’t know how to work a PlayStation controller..” You quipped, trying to hold back an amused chuckle, “Which I doubt.”
Sam frowned in confusion at you and looked at his controller again, his shoulders slacking when he saw that it wasn’t lit. He breathed out a chuckle, his eyes closing. You could tell that he was beating himself up at his own lack of focus, “Yeah, okay..” He reached for the charging cable and plugged it into the controller, “Got it. Thanks for the help.” He sarcastically muttered.
“Don’t mention it.” You replied nonchalantly.
And there he went, completely immersed in playing, while you watched him take one too many bullets, get devoured by giant snakes, or gallop off a cliff. He’d curse and laugh in frustration, his head getting thrown back while you teased him about how he’d make the same mistakes over and over again. You made short trips to and from the kitchen to grab some beer for both of you to go about your long gaming hours.
An hour turned into two, which turned into five-- by some miracle. Two bottles of beer turned into six, and then it was the whole pack. You two handled alcohol well, but it didn’t mean that you weren’t a little tipsy. You found yourself laughing at your blunders when it was your turn to play, which elicited laughter from Samuel, despite not knowing what was so funny. 
You then sighed and paused the game to rub your eyes, calming down from whatever hilarity that was going on. You then sniffled and sat back, “I dunno how Ave doesn’t like video games..” You mumbled, watching Sam taking a swig from his beer. He then wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and swallowed with a heavy breath afterwards. 
“Uhh..” He leaned forward to put the nearly empty bottle down, “She’s more like her mom than anything; She got everything from ‘er.” He paused for a second, “Uh-- Well not everything, but..” He sent you an unreadable look, his lips pressed together in a thin line, “She’s still here, y’know?”
You knew. 
Ave had told you about why her mother was no longer in the picture. Rather, she was never in the picture. Not for Avery, at least. She was too young when her mom “left” them. The lack of a father for you and the lack of a mother for her was why your relationship grew stronger. You were both missing certain aspects from your life and you could relate and understand each other better because of it. So while it was a curse, it served as a blessing. She was always open about that issue and about her past. 
But the reason you perked up when Sam started talking-- when his voice had the faintest tinge of sadness and his eyes glued to his hands as he fiddled with his thumb, seemingly deep in thought -- was because he’d never opened up to you about that particular bit. You knew everything, but only in Ave’s perspective and you never knew how Sam felt about all of it. 
“Whaddya mean?” You asked, adjusting yourself on the couch so one leg was bent under you and the other was on the floor, your arm resting on the back.
He glanced at you, unsure. He seemed like he wanted to take what he said back. His eyes darted nervously around the living room and he pursed his lips, clearing his throat, “I’m.. sure Avery told you." 
You shrugged, a small, warm smile playing on your lips, "But you're not Ave." 
Sam's left thumb rubbed against the palm of his right hand and he looked down and away from you, his leg bouncing up and down and his elbows braced on his knees again when he leaned forward. He seemed like he was thinking deeply about what you'd said and after a few seconds, he let out a sigh of surrender. 
"Do we have any more beer left..?" He quietly asked. You blinked and stopped fiddling with the fraying thread on the stitching of the back of the couch.
"Uhh.." You racked your brain, "Just the shitty kind.." You replied with a small shrug.
He nodded, still not looking at you, "Grab one." 
 "Alright.."
You made a quick trip to the open kitchen and opened the fridge, grabbing him a bottle and popping it open. When you were done, you went back to the living room, sitting back down next to him and handing him the cold beverage. 
He rested back and placed his arm on the back of the couch, bringing the bottle to his lips. You watched him intently, leaving him to collect his thoughts. You knew he was trying to filter them-- to decide what it was he was going to say and what it was he was going to leave out, but God, you wanted him to be as authentic and transparent as possible. 
“I tried..” 
He suddenly started. His voice had dropped an octave, as if he didn’t want you to hear that. You did, though, and his words -- as simple as they were -- made you frown deeply. You just wished he’d look back at you but he only looked down at his lap, his fingers tapping on the bottle that rested on his knee. 
“I really.. really did..” He shook his head slightly, “I tried for Avery.. She was so young and I thought she needed her mother, but..” He let out a dry chuckle, reaching up to rub his forehead, “One day, I come back home after a long day out with Avery.. We–" He laughed softly– wistfully even, "We spent the whole day at the zoo and.. I'd almost forgotten about why it hurt to be at home, but.." He shrugged, frowning again as his gaze lowered. You saw him swallow thickly, as if he was holding himself back from an outburst, "I walk in there and I see another man in my bed with my wife.." 
Your heart stung at what he said. What made it worse was how he said it. His voice had cracked and it was barely above a whisper. You never knew what Avery's mother did exactly and upon hearing that, you wondered how a person could be so selfish. So willing to give people like Sam up for her own personal pleasure. So willing to leave her little girl with that permanent scar in her life. 
"I knew she was doing that.." He closed his eyes and shook his head slightly, his brows twitching to a furrow as he swallowed again, only a bit harder. He pursed his lips and exhaled shakily, "I never thought that she'd bring him home. To our room. Our bed.." He wiped the palm of his free hand against his lap, inhaling a shaky breath, "The.. same goddamn bed where our baby girl slept between us while we sang her to sleep.."
You let out a breath you didn't know you were holding and felt your eyes well up with tears at what he said. He'd been keeping those thoughts to himself all that time and it seemed as if finally voicing those thoughts– the nightmares that clawed at his brain every single night – brought tears of comfort and relief to his eyes. 
Your eyes flickered up to see him frowning, his eyes still closed and his lips pressed tightly together. But there was no way you could miss it: That single, glistening tear that ran down his cheek. You felt the anxiety bubbling within you. 
That was not what you had in mind.
You didn't want to see him like that.
You thought he'd stopped hurting from that a long, long time ago but you were wrong. It never left him. He carried that weight around while simultaneously trying to raise a happy daughter all by himself. 
He covered his eyes with one, trembling hand, rubbing them while trying to take deep breaths to calm himself. You reached for his back and started to rub big, slow circles silently, letting him know that it was okay to let it all out. That was something that you've never experienced before. In all of your years knowing him, that was the first time you've seen him like that. And you absolutely hated it.
How he trembled with every cry he held back from you. How he furiously rubbed away the tears from his eyes with his fingers. He reached to set the half empty bottle on the table and plopped back again, his posture surrendered and weak.
“Oh, baby girl..” He breathed out, shaking his head slowly, “If I’d known she was gonna grow up, knowing that her mother betrayed her, hurting because of it for so long.. I wouldn’t’ve married her..” He finally removed his hand from his eyes and sniffled, “I wish she’d know how sorry I am sometimes.. Because I look at her, and..” He sighed, trying to find the right words, “I just-- I see a beautiful, smart, creative girl who deserves the world and I always feel like there’s somethin’ missing in her life and it’s like whatever I do, it’d never compensate for the lack of a mother figure and--”
You cut off his rambling by squeezing his shoulder lightly, “Sam..” You shook your head, a deep frown on your face. For the first time during the past fifteen minutes, he looked at you. He looked so lost. His cheeks were stained with tears and his eyes were red and glassy with the layer of tears that begged for one more reason to drop from his hazel eyes. You pursed your lips and shook your head at him and the longer you looked at him, the more you felt his pain. And before you knew it, you lurched forward, right into his arms, hugging him close. As close as possible. Your fingers curled to grip at the back of his t-shirt as you closed your eyes tightly and let your own tears run down your cheeks. He seemed to be in a state of shock for a couple of seconds but, slowly, his arms snaked around your waist to hug you back. His fingers sunk in the skin of your back through the thin pyjama top the tighter he held onto you. His nose was buried into the crook of your neck and, despite your furiously beating heart, you mustered up enough courage to let your fingers slip into the back of his hair for your nails to softly and soothingly scratch his scalp.
“You could’ve never known, Sam..” You spoke, your voice a hushed whisper as you continued calming him with your fingers, “Avery is the best friend I’ve ever had and it’s all thanks to you and you alone..” 
You felt him inhale deeply, his chest pressing against yours more as his lungs expanded and the breath he let out against your neck almost made you dizzy but you continued without fail, “I hope you know that I think you’re the most amazing human being on this planet and, when in doubt, remember how much you’ve helped me and mom through the hardest times..” 
Sam slowly relaxed in your arms and his hand started rubbing circles on your back until it was just about the both of you, comforting each other in the comfortable silence. His steady breaths let you know that there was an enormous weight on his chest and it’d been lifted only then. During that conversation. It was all he needed: Someone to listen to him and hold him and..
He slowly pulled away from the embrace but his hands were loosely on your hips. He looked at you with a warm gaze. Stared into your soul, unraveling you then and there. The look in your eyes-- that pure adoration you had towards him. The way you gave him those big, beautiful eyes and bit down on your lip while you stared at his. It made his breath hitch in his throat. 
No one had ever looked at him that way and as much as that scared him. As much as it was wrong and unethical. He felt himself gravitating towards you. It was absolutely ridiculous how both of you had no control and almost seemed surprised by your own actions. While one hand remained on your hip, his other raised to brush your hair out of your eyes to tuck it behind your ear and grab the side of your neck, his thumb brushing on your jawline once, twice, three times as he leaned closer and closer. His breath fanned your lips and suddenly, his lips were against yours. 
The warmth inside you burst. It overflowed. Your brows arched and you took in a deep breath, in disbelief of what was going on but it felt so good. So wrong but so right all at once. As bad as it was, your eyes fluttered shut and your resolve melted away completely, but Sam suddenly realized..
You are his friend’s daughter. 
He practically raised you.
He pulled away with a disapproving groan and pressed the back of his hand to his lips, blinking repeatedly. You studied his reaction carefully, your own fingers ghosting your lips as you took in a shaky breath. 
“Fuck..” He breathed out, his eyes closing and his brows knitting together, “I’m sorry, sweetheart-- I dunno what came over m--” 
You silenced him by grabbing his shirt and pulling him to crash your lips against his again. 
‘Fuck it.’, you thought, ‘He needs this and so do I.’ 
Your hands went to his shoulders, your grip firm on his muscles. He was still tense and he wasn't kissing back but, God, when your tongue brushed his bottom lip softly, he felt his willpower dwindling away. 
He wasn't thinking anymore and neither were you.
It was a right-here-right-now moment and you were going to cease the chance and hold onto it with your nails and teeth.
When he relaxed and kissed you back deeply, you pushed him down on the couch, never breaking the kiss as you straddled his hips. His hands were all over you. Under your top, his nails scratched at your tender skin gently and the moan he let out when you pressed yourself against his crotch snapped something within you.
And Sam?
He was too far gone.
'Fuck..' He thought, 'This is so wrong.. So fuckin' wrong..'
He watched you hastily unbutton his pants and he told himself to stop this. That there was still time for him to push you off of him and tell you what a mistake that was. But he couldn't help it. The innocence in your eyes as they flickered to look up at him. The sweet yet devious grin you sent him. 
The fact that you could get any man you wanted but needed him right there was enough to make his resolve crumble. 
He let out a grunt and closed his eyes, throwing his head back and trying to steady his breathing. You were so needy. Your hands were on his hips as your mouth fully enveloped him. He couldn't help himself. His hips bucked and low, gruff curses tumbled from his parted lips. 
And you couldn’t stop yourself. 
You wanted to relieve him and he felt so good. His hands brushing your hair back and holding it in a tight fist. And you watched his head rolling back again after he’d mustered up enough strength to look at what you were doing. 
You didn’t know it yet but you had much to regret soon.
And so did he. 
Nothing would ever be the same again after that night.

Like a House of Cards Ch. 7: Something Precious, Something Gained
Summary: As the dominos fall in the opposite direction, time ticks on.
Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13
After the blast hit and Dark fell backwards, their form flicking and convulsing, the chaos around them froze in time.
Brody broke free of the magic pushing him away and both he and Wil raced over to Dark.
Wil took out his revolver and fired in the Guildmaster’s direction, screaming in a rage before leaping to Dark’s side.
“No! No!” Brody screamed as he raced over to Dark, tears starting to stream from his eyes. “She wasn’t supposed ta hit yeh.”[1]
“Darkling!” Wil knelt by Dark’s other side.
Brody began drawing up as much aura as he could muster as started trying to seep it into Dark’s battered body as carefully as he could so he didn’t worsen the damage. He looked up at Wil, “Make yerself fookin’ useful, will yeh Bubbles?”[2]
“Ohh, right,” Wil realized and placed his hands ever so gently on Dark’s chest, the touch gentle as the two of them began slowly seeping aura into Dark’s chest and tentatively their aura fused the horrid cracks up again.
The Entity’s souls, no longer screaming in agony, began to rouse again from their dazed state and Dark saw Wil and Brody leaning over him.
“Dark, sweet mother ‘a[3] Mary, yer[4] alive,” Brody gasped, setting his head on Dark’s chest as another round of sobs ripped their way out of his chest. “I thought yeh were gonna die.”[5]
The hunters all suddenly disappeared into a massive portal as a person in a long brown trench coat and blood stained bandages over his eyes. The blood from his bandages was starting to roll down his cheeks.
The entire group looked at this new Host, and the one who was still standing by Illinois.
“The fook[6]?” Marvin said, looking between the two Hosts.
The Dealer walked towards Dark, who was starting to settle in exhausted unconsciousness instead of imminent death, Wil looking up and frowned at the fact that he was now seeing double of one of his boys. Both he and Brody felt drained.
“Huh, I don’t recall getting drunk,” Wil commented.
“He’s not gonna[7] die, right?” Brody growled.
“Of course not, why would the Host want such a thing?” The Dealer scoffed. “The Entity should be fortunate that it will take another three years for the Guildmaster to amass that kind of magic again and by then the Entity will be more than fully recharged due to the vast empire he has accrued that he can get aura from.”
“Holy fuck, he’s still alive?”
J.J and Hearts appeared out of thin air.
Illinois and his siblings, except for the Host, braced for another attack.
“Hey, hey,” Hearts held his hands up in surrender. “We’re done, besides there’s no point in wearing the suits again now that Wilford’s alive.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Bim demanded.
“Well, we,” Hearts began patting his pocket in confusion, before groaning and rolling his eyes. “Logan’s still got the video, awww, shit, we were gonna[7] use that.”
Hearts looked up at the beanstalk not too far from them. A huge sunflower platform starting to bud and flower at the top. “Hold up, we’ll get Tech Avery and the Hulking Croak down and we’ll do the whole spiel then, when we’re—”
The Suit dodged as Ethan came out of nowhere to try and punch Hearts in the face. Hearts deflecting or dodging most of the strikes.
“What did you do to my dog!” Ethan demanded in an angry fury. “Stop wearing my fucking face.”
Then one of Ethan’s fists phased through Hearts’s face before he completely disappeared. Then he was swiftly kicked in the back so he toppled forward onto his face.
“We’re done,” Hearts told Ethan, parts of him materializing first before others. “I can kick your ass, but I really don’t want to.”
“You’ve killed dozens of people already,” Ethan spat, “why stop now?”
“Well maybe I like existing,” Hearts told him, “you ever think of that?”
“Why would that matter?” Ethan demanded, picking himself back up.
“I can’t tell if you’re being obnoxious or just plain stupid,” Hearts rolled his eyes, and looked around.
J.J casually snapped his fingers and a magical barrier sprung up and a wall of red and gold magic hit it. “Right on time, it seems,” the false J.J smiled.
“Yeah, I’d hate to tell the story twice,” Hearts smiled. “Hey Princey, are the others with you?”
“Odious scoundrel!” Roman shouted. He was standing with all the other Sides. All of them in their superhero outfits. Other heroes and villains began showing up since they’d been called over by the cracking dome and the burst of magic.
J.J dissipated the barrier.
Nate let out a sigh of relief as he counted all seven Sides. None of them had tried to kill each other for power or to get more of themselves back. He’d need to have a long chat with all of them, but right now there were other things to worry about.
“Where is that face stealing monster?” Roman demanded.
“Seeing as I still have my face, I think we are merely dealing with imposters,” Logan explained.
“Logic, now is not the time for semantics,” Janus hissed.
Logan fell silent, but he was looking at the two Suits. Hearts smiled at him in return.
“Hey, glad to see you’re all still doing well,” Hearts still had a huge smile.
Janus hissed at him in fury at the same time Logan yelled out, “FALSEHOOD!”
“Yikes, but that’s a discussion to have with our Logan,” Hearts smiled.
“That was nothing like Logic!” Roman shouted. “How dare you?”
“Well yeah, he’s not our Logic yet, give him about fifteen years and he’ll get there,” Nestor explained. “We’re from the future.”
There was a beat of silence before Roman began laughing, pointing his sword down at them, “Your tricks will not fool me, thou cretinous wretched. Tell them Deceit.”
All the other Sides had already been looking at Janus, who was staring at the two doppelgängers in a mixture of shock and apprehension.
“Deceit,” Roman growled, “now is not the time to play devil’s advocate.”
“That would explain the nanite technology and the fact that they know who we are,” Logan reasoned, a pit forming in his gut. Because if that Logan had been capable of that much sadism and outright, malicious violence . . .
“No. No!” Roman spat angrily at Janus,. “We are not even considering this.”
“Wait you guys are even thinking of considering this?” Ethan shouted. “It’s absolute horseshit!”
“Deceit’s a living lie detector,” Illinois called out. “He just also happens to be a really good illusionist.”
“It’s true,” Joan pushed three way past Janus and Remus and jumped down from a piece of rubble.
“So they’re telling the truth?” Joan looked at Janus.
“Unfortunately, it seems so,” Janus answered through gritted teeth.
Heart looked over at Brody, “Come on, Chase, if we can’t cheat with Logan’s video, we gotta do it together. I only want to do this once a round.”
“I’m not fookin’ leavin’ him ta get shot again!”[8] Brody shouted. “I don’t care if Host says it’s clear or not. I didn’t put up with all this bullshite[9] ta[10] watch him die.”
“Come on, he’s literally in the middle of what amounts to an army of magic, he’s not going anywhere,” Hearts tried to reason.
“Leave it,” J.J told him, his voice still grainy with whatever was helping him speak. “We need to get Logan back and it’s best to have this farce dealt with sooner rather than later.”
“Fine,” Hearts let out a frustrated groan, before pointing to J.J and then Brody. “This is J.J he’s a tactical advisor. This is Brody, part time hit man, and fulltime emotional crutch for an unstable eldritch demon.”
“And I am the Police Commissioner of the Egoton PD,” Hearts introduced, gesturing to himself, CP Nestor flashed a badge on his wallet that was usually carried around by Abe and reached around and grabbed a disk at the back of his neck and handed it over to the Dealer. “I’ll spare my name since it makes younger me a bit antsy despite half of the league already knowing who we are and where you live because you’ve been playing hero since you were fourteen.”
“The hell, you’re not me, you’ve killed people,” Ethan argued.
“Trust me, we’ve been targeting people who have killed or at the single rumor of an order from their Guildmaster they would kill. I have killed far better people, and I’m not claiming we’re saints but we did this town a favor.”
“You could have just told us upfront,” Logan grumbled. “It would have saved us all this trouble and bloodshed.”
Hearts started letting out an amused chuckle, J.J and Brody were decidedly not laughing, “Oh that’s funny, and you always say you don’t have a sense of humor. Did you know that you always ask that, every single time? Nah, you see, we tried that. A lot. So we’ve just been trying whatever sticks.”
“This is the tenth reset,” Brody frowned. “Thanks ta the anomaly an’ J.J here, we’ve been able ta remember all ‘a ‘em so we could make changes as we needed.”[11]
“We had to remove your J.J this time around because he refused to help,” Diamonds explained. “Speaking of which.”
He stepped to the side and snapped his fingers, a bubble of distorted time rippled out and J.J tripped through. He looked confused and bewildered, until he saw future J.J and jumped up to attack him.
Then there was another ripple of time and both J.J were standing there, the real one looking furious as Diamonds just stared back. “See? No one’s died, you should have just trusted me from the start.”
J.J looked around at everyone and he froze when he saw Jackie, who was standing next to Chase.
“Jackie?” J.J gave a shaky sign as he took a couple steps forward. The mute hero then raced over and hit Jackie with a hug, he was shaking in relief.
“Hey, Jay, you okay now?” Jackie asked in concern.
J.J nodded and held onto Jackie even tighter.
Hearts had the wherewithal to wait for the moment to pass before he pointed up to the beanstalk, “And our Logic just peaced out up there. He motioned to the beanstalk. “He’s got the drive we need where we explain everything and have actual video evidence to prove it. So you all can either wait in here, or we can send someone up to get him.”
Roman looked up at the beanstalk, finally sheathing his sword. “Fine, besides, we have unfinished business with him.”
“Excellent the Core Sides will be able to accomplish the mission with little to no bloodshed,” the Dealer smiled.
“They good or should we send someone else?” Nestor asked J.J and the Dealer.
“The Core Sides should be fine,” the Host asked for the two of them. “The Sides should not worry, the Host will not allow the Suits to escape. Especially since there’s a town to clean up.”
“I’m going with them,” Nestor decided. “Someone needs to help power him down afterwards and he won’t let that happen if he thinks the other Sides are still in danger.”
That caused a little bit of an argument but after a while everyone came to an agreement. Core Sides would go up with Nestor to retrieve their Logan and Patton. The three Dark Sides would stay down with the others and help clean up or wait for Dark to recover.
Janus did walk over to the beanstalk with them, halting Logan a ways away to talk. Mostly to plan in case Nestor double crossed them.
“I’ll keep an eye on things down here,” Janus decided, a small albino python sliding out of his sleeve and moving towards Logan. The logical Side letting the serpent crawl up his body until it was delicately wrapped around his wrist and then turned into a bracelet.
“Are you certain that you do not wish to join us?” Logan asked.
“If I go up there, I will strangle him with my own hands,” Janus warned.
“Alright,” Logan responded in understanding and walked back towards the spot the other Core Sides were standing with Nestor. Roman set his hand on the tree-like stem of the beanstalk and a rounded elevator carriage made of woven plants and flowers.
“Is that even safe, Princey,” Virgil looked at the carriage nervously.
“Of course why wouldn’t it be?” Roman leaned against the carriage with a huge smile.
Virgil frowned, “Are you serious?”
After some magic from Patton they all got into the carriage and it started to move up. The ride was quiet for a bit as the carriage began moving up.
“Why are you even coming up, don’t you have a future to hover over?” Virgil spat. “We can’t be that important.”
Nestor frowned, leaning forward in his seat, “Hey look, I’ve regretted many, many of the things I’ve done in my life but the time I spent with you guys was not one of them.”
Nestor pointed to Logan, “You’re not our Logan yet, but even at this point I owe you a lot. You fixed my crappy homemade suit into something that would protect me. You and Silver and Jackie helped give me a structure while I was still in school and doing hero work. I still hold those days in a special place in my heart, and regardless of what happens next that won’t change. But even after I still owe Logan a lot for really helping me out. I might have mentioned it but this city hates me. Dark dropped the police department in my lap and basically told me: “keep order in my city, bitch” and walked off to keep looking for Wil. Logan was there to help me. He helped me when no one else did or could.”
“Sounds like hell,” Virgil commented.
“For five years it was,” Nestor told him, “a lot of people who didn’t need to die, died. Hunters were killing anyone they thought could be a demon vessel after they found out how many demons were actually in the city. And while all that was going on, I had to stand up in front of the news and try and keep the peace in a city that was turning itself inside out. My mission was to save as many people as I could, and if a couple scumbags who were going to kill children and people who have nothing to do with heroes or villains then who cares?”
Logan’s brain was already going to dangerous places. He could see a logical chain of events that brought the Side from where he was sitting in-between Patton and Virgil, to wherever Spade was in his life. It was a dangerous slippery slope.
His future self had already been telling him things. And if these doppelgängers were truly from the future then he had to acknowledge that his other self’s warnings were true. That Virgil and Roman had died. That Patton had been hurt and needed protecting. That Deceit had to be trusted when he couldn’t trust anyone else.
And that the hunters were to blame.
These thoughts swirled his head as he evaluated them:
Did Patton deserve to be attacked for things he could not control? No!
Did a young man who was barely old enough to drink deserve to have the metaphorical weight of a city dropped upon his shoulders and left to run the police force on his own? No!
Did the people who callously murdered Virgil deserve to be left to walk free . . .
Logan hesitated. Apparently most of those people were now dead before they could kill Virgil and others like him. They also hadn’t yet done anything.
Objectively his head spun with the paradox. Given the chance they would have killed him. But they were too dead to actually carry out the deed anymore. We’re they still guilty of the crime?
The logical Side’s battered heart cried “Yes” but now Logan couldn’t be sure that was his mind and heart deciding those things anymore.
His future self had clearly been trying to make Logan think and act like him. If not for Ethan and Chase, he would have succeeded.
“Not sure how much I should keep telling you, either way, Lo’s gonna be pissed,” Nestor shrugged as the flower car continued to take them up. “Logan works kinda with Google these days. Patton started going full demon and got scared so he worked with Dark for aura to help sooth Pat, and then he worked with Google and Bing for safety.”
“Because he’s inorganic?” Logan commented, roused from his rather venomous thoughts.
“Yeah took a good five years for Lo to want to work with him, Google had been making offers for a long time before that,” Nestor scratched some rubble out of the back of his scalp. “We were all going through a lot and I kinda lost track of him for a couple of years since we were all so busy. Then he just showed up in Dark’s office one day a glitchy and angry mess.”
“I fail to see how if you were genuine that we would turn your assistance down,” Logan grumbled.
“Yeah, we’ll you weren’t the difficult one,” Nestor scoffed, looking out the window in thought for a couple seconds before looking back. “Look, Lo’s really protective of Pat, so just be careful, okay? Pat’s been through a lot.”
“Our anger and frustration is with your Logan, not your Patton, so it shouldn’t be a problem.”
The cart finally came to a stop at the top of the beanstalk and opened into a lush and verdant garden entryway. Beautiful petals and pastel colored insects fluttering in the breeze.
There were the light sounds of conversation that the Sides and Nestor could hear coming from the next room.

A/N: Sorry for the lack of update! This one is a long one so please enjoy! Feedback is always welcome  Chapter 13- London Michelle opened her eyes to the sound of her phone buzzing and she saw it was morning in London. She looked over and saw it was Mat who was calling and she quickly picked up the phone as she rubbed her eyes “Hey, sorry I was sleeping” She muttered as she looked over at the clock and remembered she had a gig tonight. Michelle had been in London for two days now, she leaves tomorrow night to head back to New York. She heard voices around Mat and he excused himself and then it began to be more quiet. “Sorry, the boys wanted to go out tonight with the win.” Mat said and Michelle laughed “You deserve it! I saw that goal and literally screeched, I think I woke up a couple of people” She said “You were watching?” Mat said shyly and she nodded “I’ve been trying to watch as many games as I can when I’m on the road” She admitted and she could tell Mat was possibly smiling with happiness “I wanted to ask you a question” Mat said and Michelle sat on her bed “Yeah, everything okay?” She questioned and Mat nodded “Yeah, I just wanted to know if you wanted to come sleepover at my apartment when you come back? You come hang out with us after the game and we’ll go to a bar or something and we can go to my place.. I’m also not trying to sleep with you if anything. Just wanna spend some time with you” Mat said the last part quickly and Michelle nodded “Yeah, I would love that” She said and Mat sighed in relief “Cool, I’m glad” He said and she chuckled “You’re very cute, I hope you know that” She said and he chuckled now. “What’s your plans for today?” Mat asked and Michelle got up and started going through her suitcase “Marie and I and a couple of other girls are doing a photoshoot for Vogue over here and then some of us are going to a club.” She said “You remember to punch any guy in the face if he tries to do something with you” Mat reminded her and she nodded “I know Mat, I don’t plan on staying long.. Just showing up so the host can say our names, then hang around for a bit and leave.” She said and Mat nodded. Mat never intends to control Michelle, he never wanted to tell her what to wear, where she could go or who she could hang out with. He knew it wouldn’t make their relationship great because both of them were traveling and were meeting new people. They had to trust each other. “I know, You can take care of yourself and kick someone’s ass if you need to. Just be careful” Mat said and Michelle smiled softly as she wish she could kiss Mat right now. “I miss you so much right now” She whispered softly and he sighed “I miss you too, you literally on my mind every day” “Such a romantic” She teased and he laughed “I know, you’ve brought out the cheesy guy in me” He said and she shook her head “So you’ve approved of the colors we’re going for?” She said “Yeah, I can’t wait for you to be in your dress.. I don’t think I’ll be able to keep my hands off of you for the night.” He said and she blushed Soon she heard a female voice calling Mat “Come on Mat! We’re about to have another round!” The woman said and Michelle frowned when Mat said “Okay! I’ll be inside, I just need to say goodbye to someone” He said before the woman spoke again “Alright! We’ve also made plans to head to a nightclub after this” Mat sighed “So I need to go now, I’ll call you when I wake up. Stay safe” Mat said and Michelle nodded “Yeah.. You too.” She hung up and sighed and laid back in bed. She shouldn’t be that bothered with the fact that Mat is hanging out with girls. She knew Mat had a history with girls before and she was in another country so she couldn’t do anything about it. Michelle remembered that her and Mat weren’t really official yet, Mat could do anything he wants. Michelle could do anything she wanted to but she didn’t want to. Soon there was a knock on her door and it was most likely Marie, and there were pictures released this morning in US time of her and Mat. She knew that Marie was coming and she was ready for an early grave. “Who is it?” Michelle called and she heard a voice “You open this door right now Michelle Avery Wilson because you are in trouble” Marie said and Michelle sighed as she made her way to the door “Yes mother, I know when I’m in trouble when you’re using my whole name” Michelle muttered as she opened the door and Marie looked at her client, unimpressed. “You’re my client, I have to know your whole name. Anyways this isn’t why I’m here” Marie said letting herself in and Michelle closed the door. “What are these pictures I’m seeing on the internet with you and this random guy?” She said and Michelle sighed “That’s Mat, he’s playing hockey in New York. We’ve been talking and I like him” She said and Marie narrowed her eyes at her “Oh. That boy” She said as she walked towards the window “He’s not good for you, he’s just going to use you and drop you like he probably does to all those other girls. I don’t want to see you hurt” Marie said and Michelle sighed “Marie, I could take care of myself and Mat isn’t like that at all. He’s been treating me well and I wouldn’t be talking to him” She said and Marie shook her head “You also should be keeping that image of being single” Marie said as she gave her a look “Because I’m pretty sure Mat is doing that right now” Michelle frowned “Mat can do whatever he wants to do, he’s not my boyfriend.” “It’s good he isn’t your boyfriend because I’ve looked into him” She said and her eyes widen “What?!” “Because all he does is sleep around, ever since he got into that Hockey team. Then when he’s done with you, he’ll find someone else” She said and the words hit her as she was silent. Michelle shook her head “No, I know that won’t happen.. I know he cares about me” “We’ll see how long that lasts” Marie muttered and she shook her head at Michelle “Alright, we have to get to the Vogue photoshoot with the other girls, then we have lunch with a couple of people.. We have an interview with BBC radio and then you have to do that club thing.. Which I hope you don’t go crazy with the drinking” “I know Marie, I don’t plan on staying long anyways. I’m leaving early to go see what I can before I leave in the morning” “Good, I know your parents will want to keep in contact with you soon.. I don’t want to know your father’s reaction to knowing you’re with a hockey player” She muttered and Michelle nodded “Yeah, I know he won’t be happy about it” “That’s why I’m intending to keep him far away from him and my mother for as long as possible” Michelle muttered, thinking of the day her parents have to meet Mat. “Okay, I’ll be seeing how the other girls are and meet me in the lobby in half and hour with the others so we can go” “Copy that boss lady” Michelle said and Marie gave her a look “You know I hate when you do that” She muttered before leaving. A couple of hours later, Michelle was finishing the photoshoot and it was now the BBC Radio part. She sat in the chair as she grinned as the interviewer came in “So nice to meet you Michelle, you’re more beautiful in person” She said and Michelle grinned “Thank you so much!” “You ready to start this interview?” The woman said and Michelle nodded “Yup, let’s get this started!” “Cool” The woman said as she was checking what last moment things they needed before they were signaled that they were live. “And I’m here with supermodel Michelle Wilson, it’s so nice to have you here today” The woman said and Michelle smiled and nodded “It’s so nice to be here! I always love it here in London. It’s always so beautiful and the people are so nice” She said and the woman smiled “Thank you, I’m pretty sure you had a busy day today?” “Yup, photoshoots and interviews, followed by a good lunch. A good day overall” She said and the woman nodded “You’re always so busy, so many people love you and respect you” “I always want to give back to the people who supported me the past year, Without them, I wouldn’t be here today. I’m always happy to do these jobs too because they’re so fun” She said and the interviewer nodded “I’m sure you have so many supporters and so many men admiring you!” She said and Michelle blushed “I guess?” She laughed “Me and the Internet have been seeing pictures of you and New York Islanders’ player Mat Barzal, how is that working?” She said and Michelle knew this was a serious question, and it was important and knew Mat would be hearing about this once he woke up in the morning in New York. “Mat is an amazing person on and off the ice.” Michelle began and she grinned “I’m seriously lucky to have him in my life and he’s generally one of the best people I’ve ever met. He’s very special to me” Michelle said and the interviewer smiled “Aw! We love you two over here. I hope you guys work out!” She said and Michelle grinned “Thank you!” They kept on with the interview, questions about Michelle and what she liked to do and any crazy stories she had. Michelle waved goodbye to everyone and was making her way back to the hotel She looked at the clock and saw it was getting later, she saw that it was too late to contact Mat as he was probably sleeping still. She made her way to the hotel room and picked out a beautiful blue dress and black heels. She went to curl her hair and she grinned at herself and was very pleased with her and she walked out the door. It was already night time and she was moving her head to a song that was playing in the club. Finally the DJ finally gave her the mic for her to speak and say she was enjoying, it caused cheers. As soon as she left the booth, she was crowded with people asking her for pictures and a couple of people had offered to buy her drinks. She gladly took some pictures and she took some drinks, if Mat could have some fun, so should she. Michelle was laughing with some people with the club. It wasn’t until a random guy came up to her and started flirting with her. He had asked for her number and she had shook her head “I’m sorry, I’m seeing someone right now” She said and the man respectfully backed off. Michelle had lost time and by the time she walked out of the club, it was already dawn. Michelle grinned as she took off her jacket and slung it over her shoulder and watched the sunset. She looked at her clock and saw that her flight was in a couple of hours and she knew Mat would be awake with the USA timezone. Michelle took off her heels as she walked into the room and threw them on her suitcase. She threw herself on the bed and she groaned of happiness that she finally was in bed. She looked at her phone before calling Mat and she thought he wouldn’t answer until she heard a soft ‘Hello’ “Hey you” She whispered and she could tell Mat was smiling “Hey” He whispered and she smiled “Are you at practice? I can call you back later” She muttered “Nah, in bed right now.. We have the day off” Mat said and she grinned “You guys deserve that after that game last night” She said “I heard your little interview” Mat said and Michelle felt a bit nervous “Yeah?” She said and he sounded happy “You’re so special to me, you have no idea how much I care for you” Mat said softly and Michelle grinned “I meant everything I said” “I sure hope so” Mat chuckled and she laughed before Mat asked “What are you up to now?” He asked and she sighed “In bed, I have a flight in like 5 hours so I need to find a way to kill some time” She said and what he said next literally made her jaw drop “What are you wearing?” Mat whispered and she chuckled a bit “Mat, what are you doing?” She asked and Mat responded “I’m helping you kill some time.. Do you want me to stop?” He asked huskily and Michelle smirked as she bit her lip a bit “No”

All I Need to Know for Now (Raleigh X MC)

Pairing: Raleigh X MC (Aria Campbell, Minor Avery X MC)
Rating: NSFW/18+
Note: Given my previous fics and head canons about Raleigh and Aria’s relationship, I wasn’t quite satisfied with the MC’s happy-go-lucky reactions to Raleigh’s antics this last chapter and wanted to add in more about their love triangle. I re-wrote the relevant parts of chapter 13 from this perspective. Some of the dialogue is transcribed from the chapter, but much is new or changed. I also changed up the sex scene some for fun and omitted much of the chapter that didn’t need re-writing to fit my version of the story.

Aria doesn't know what to do with herself. Yes, she'd had a moment and acted completely insane, butting into Jaylen's performance of her song, but it's not like it's out of the ordinary for celebrities to snap and get even more popular for it. Seems she's just famous enough for people to care, but not quite famous enough to be able to get away with it. Bad girl pop star apparently doesn't look good on her.
So now she's stuck at home with nothing to do. It would be the perfect opportunity to write new songs, or finish some old ones, but every time she tries, she's got nothing. The stress of wondering if her career is over as quickly as it began is taking a toll, and she's adrift in small town no-man's land with no purpose or direction. So when her doorbell rings unexpectedly, she's not sure if it will he more bad news or a welcome distraction.
"Alright, Aria, have you missed me?"
"Oh my god, Avery! I can't believe you're here!" Saying she's surprised would be an understatement. She feels the urge to pinch herself to make sure this isn't another dream that will venture into nightmare territory.
"Hope you don't mind that I stopped by, but I redirected my flight on the way to the Indio music festival. And I brought a few friends..."
“Hey, kid. Long time, no see.” Hank stands behind Avery, in his typical working stance, arms folded with his aviator sunglasses on. 
Next to him is Zadie, as stylish as ever and way overdressed for Aria’s neck of the woods. “You know, I thought you were exaggerating every time you said how boring your hometown was, but now I see the reports are accurate.”
Aria chuckles because Zadie isn’t wrong, but then she sees him step out from behind the group and her stomach flip flops with a feeling she can’t quite place.
“Hey, Aria. Are you gonna let us in or...” Raleigh asks coolly in his typical ‘I don’t give a fuck if you do or you don’t’ tone, but the smile on his face suggests he’s happy to see her.
“I’ve missed you all so much!” Aria exclaims, and she has, she really has. But she’s also overwhelmed by this impromptu visit, and her time away from Raleigh and Avery has done nothing to clear up her indecision about the two. They’d both sent her a couple of texts but they were fairly brief. Avery hand been supportive as expected, and Raleigh was... Raleigh. He’d worked out another PR relationship to take the media focus off of Aria, or so he said. There were plenty of other ways to do that, like, oh, for example, destroying millions of dollars worth of artwork which he also did do. She’s not sure which is worse or if she has the energy to put up with his antics, even if they are just for show. 
Aria glances between Avery and Raleigh. She’s drawn to Raleigh despite it all, for reasons beyond her comprehension, this physical compulsion begging her to jump into his arms. But then there’s Avery - sweet, dependable, supportive Avery -  looking at her with such adoration and longing it just feels right. She flings her arms around Avery’s shoulders, kissing him slow and deep. She can’t see Raleigh’s face but she can almost feel the heat of his glare, or at least that’s what she imagines the feeling to be. Avery’s hands find her waist, and he sighs into her mouth, Aria reflexively pressing closer to him. She feels him smile against her lips, and for a moment, she’s completely lost in him.
Aria pulls back, blushing fiercely. “Well come in!” She offers without making eye contact with anyone or waiting for a response. She needs to get a hold of herself before this gets even more awkward. 
But then it does get more awkward when Avery spots the poster of him on her wall, and Aria’s kicking herself for not taking it down in all this time she’s been home. Raleigh jokes about there being no poster of him, but if Aria’s not mistaken, there’s more than just a hint of jealousy there. As mortified as she is, she can’t help but find satisfaction in Raleigh’s reaction.

The gang has been in Avery’s limo traveling to some unknown destination for almost half an hour now, departing shortly after dropping off Aria’s fan mail and filling her in on Ellis buying Jaylen’s label. Apparently he’d felt so bad about selling the song, when he couldn’t buy it back he bought the whole damn thing.  It doesn’t change the fact that it’s still not Aria’s to sing, but maybe this will make things better in the long run. 
The limo pulls up outside a gorgeous lake home - an Airbnb rental Aria presumes - but Avery immediately informs her otherwise. “Ladies, gentlemen, friends, welcome to my humble summer home.”
“It has a state of the art security system too!” Hank assesses. “I’m going to enjoy it here.” Leave it to Hank to notice that first over all the breathtaking scenery.
“How long have you had this?” Aria questions, stunned that Avery would own property so close to her hometown. 
“Since this morning,” Avery answers with a sly grin. “I just bought it.”
Aria is speechless. Avery bought a lake house just to have a place to go to cheer her up. Compare that with Raleigh getting a fake girlfriend and creating property damage to smooth things over, and one of them is the clear winner as far as Aria is concerned. Not that this is a competition or anything.
“Alright, enough talking, more getting in the water,” Raleigh chimes in, not allowing Aria to dwell on it much longer.
Not having known where they were going, Aria hadn’t packed a bathing suit, but of course Zadie has her covered. The skimpy white suit isn’t the most practical for water sports, but at least judging from Avery and Raleigh’s reactions, she looks amazing in it.  
They race on the Jet Ski’s and hang around the dock for sometime before boarding a rented sailboat with drinks in hand. This day is shaping up to be just what she needed. As they approach the center of the lake, Avery proposes an underwater breath-holding competition, which ends up being between himself, Raleigh an Aria. Aria just hopes neither of them pass out trying to be the better man.
Aria’s uses her breath control techniques to oxygenate herself as much as possible before dipping below the surface. She’s not sure how much time has passed, but all three of them are starting to squirm. Avery’s the first to give up, heading to the surface for air. Raleigh floats closer, eyes locked on her as an intimidation tactic she presumes, until he suddenly closes the distance between them and firmly plants his lips on hers. As he grabs her hips and presses his body against hers, she can’t help but kiss him back - a kiss that literally takes her breath away to the extent she has to give up and emerges above the water line just before Raleigh does.
“You did that on purpose just to get me to lose!” Aria splashes Raleigh playfully.
Raleigh winks at her. “It didn’t seem like you minded."
Avery swims over, a look of questioning and concern on his face, like he suspects a hint of what went on but doesn’t want to know. He gives Aria’s hand a squeeze and then cradles her in his arms as they bob in the water. “At least you beat me,” he offers as consolation, bringing his lips to hers for a fervent kiss. It’s nice, but after just kissing Raleigh, it’s lacking. It feels strange having Avery’s lips where his just were, and she's thankful for the water washing any trace of him away. Avery helps Aria back onto the boat and hands her a towel to dry off. “I hope you got the release you wanted today.”
On the one hand, yes, she’s happier than she has been in quite a while. On the other, she’s more wound up than ever. “I did. Thanks so much for coming out all this way to visit me.”
Avery smiles softly and tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “Of course, Cadence. We’ll always be there for you.”
“Alright, less conspiratorial whispering, more water sports!” Raleigh proclaims as he climbs back into the boat, his timing impeccable once again.

Everyone gathers around the fire after dinner and a long day in the sun. They talk, laugh, eat smores, and when Raleigh picks up the guitar and starts to play, it turns into an impromptu singalong, with Aria, Avery, and Raleigh harmonizing beautifully. With no expectations or weight on her shoulders, it feels good, really good, to be singing again. But when Raleigh hands her the guitar to play, the wounds are still too fresh. Fortunately her friends are understanding and they don’t push the issue, knowing she’ll get there when she’s ready. 
Before long, the others begin to head inside. “I suppose it’s time for me turn in as well.” Avery announces, nodding his head at Aria as he rises. You coming?”
She can’t tell if there’s any sort of expectation in the invitation, but whatever the case, she’s not going inside until she can have a proper discussion with Raleigh. "In a bit. I just need more time to...think.”
Avery’s face falls just a little, recovering with a weak smile. “Alright, Darling. Let me know if you need anything.” A silent moment passes as gentle waves lap against the shore, moonlight dancing off the rolling water.
As soon as Avery is out of earshot, Raleigh scoffs and shakes his head. “Darling? He never gives up the prince charming act does he?”
Aria shrugs. “Maybe you’d be wise to take a few lessons from his playbook.”
Raleigh’s eyes narrow. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Well...I hear you’ve been getting into a lot of trouble in my absence.”
“What can I say? The town’s boring without you.”
“Ugh, is everything just a game to you? You may think it’s funny to destroy property and disrespect people as part of your bad boy image, but I don’t. It’s time you fucking grew up.” Aria pushes up from her Adirondack chair, already over this conversation.
“Wait!” Raleigh tugs on her hand. “Please sit back down, and I’ll explain.” Aria rolls her eyes but sits back in the chair. “I felt awful when you were sent home. If I’d have done what you did, I’d probably end up with a slap on the wrist and more fans and album sales than before. It wasn’t fair, and I hated the negative attention you were getting, so I thought, hey, I’m basically untouchable, why not create some headlines myself to take the focus off you?”
“And that’s the best idea you had? Why not make headlines for doing something positive instead of being destructive?” 
Raleigh scoots forward, placing his hand on her knee. “You know the good doesn’t get nearly as much press as the bad. Look, I’m not Avery. I’m not the type to ride into town in my white limousine and save the day by buying a beach palace to keep you in.
“I’m not asking you to be prince charming, or a knight in shining armor, or... whatever. I just...” Aria struggles to put it into words. She’s not asking for a savior or a lifelong commitment, she just needs to know that she means something to him before she falls too deep and ends up with a broken heart.
“Aria, No matter the means, what I did, I did for you, because I care about you...and it worked. Between the property damage and my new fake relationship, your incident with Jaylen is old news.”
“Well if that relationship is as fake as ours was, I’m still not feeling very reassured right now.”
Raleigh cocks his head to the side with a smirk. “Are you jealous, Campbell?” Aria doesn’t respond but serves him an icy glare. “Aww, babe, come here.” He pats his leg and holds his arms open wide.
She’s still mad and doesn’t want to give in, but him calling her babe again makes her weak. She sighs deeply before getting up and settling into his lap. “You’re still on thin ice, Carrera.”
“Aria, you have nothing to worry about. She doesn’t hold a candle to you. She’s just doing us a favor. I’ve missed you.” Raleigh traces tingly patterns up and down her thighs, goosebumps forming under his touch.
Aria peers into his eyes, biting her lower lip. “Okay, you can kiss me now.”
Raleigh chuckles. "You've gotten bossy in your time away, huh?"
"Maybe....But you like it."
Raleigh threads his fingers through her hair, pulling her mouth to his, kissing her seductively, tongue gliding over her lips. “I’ve been thinking about this all day, Aria. All the things I wanted to do when I got you alone...”
She feels him harden beneath her as she plants another kiss on his lips. Now with the air cleared between them, she won't deny she's been thinking the same. Aria sinks to her knees and looks up at him through her lashes as she unbuckles his pants. "Well, you know what I've been wanting to do to you?"

She's feeling vulnerable yet open in his arms. No more fooling around, no more games. It's him she wants and he needs to know. "Raleigh, I'm glad you're here. I missed you so much these past few days. It's like I got jolted into an alternate reality you weren't in."
“I.. I missed you, too.” His expression grows somber, serious for once before his smile is back again. “But you don’t have to worry about that now. We’re here now, together.” He strokes her arm tenderly as he holds her close, pressing his soft, warm lips to her forehead.
It’s not a promise of any certain future, but Aria can’t say what tomorrow will bring. Knowing he’s all-in in this moment is good enough... for now.

Writober 2020 - 22 (Basement)
Summary: A sidequest went bump in the night at Hawke house. Just what the hell is in the basement anyway?
(Warning: blood, someone getting murdered.)

“Man, I haven't been down here since we used this way to break in!”
Talk about a sentence she had never expected to actually say...
Even though it was high noon, the room Moses and Avery stood in was dark. The lantern they had brought with them cut through some of the inky black, but it wasn't enough to see into the far back. Everything else was still hidden in the shadows, waiting to jump out at them.
Which was why they were wearing armor. They were kind of popular targets for assassination attempts as of late.
Avery, gifted with the ability to see better in the dark than her companion, glanced around. “I don't see anything, do you?”
“I have a lantern and you have night vision, what do you think?” Moses shifted the lantern before she could answer. “Leandra was probably just hearing things.”
Probably. That or she wanted to take them on a wild goose chase through their own fucking house. Anything was possible with that woman.
Avery's so-called mother was the reason they had found themselves down in the basement to begin with. Over breakfast, Leandra had claimed she had heard strange noises coming from beneath the house and all but begged them to go take a look. Normally they wouldn't have, but it just so happened that there was a way to get in from Darktown so... they had suited up and gone down.
It wasn't for her, of course. They were just satisfying their own curiosity.
“Well, let me go check the lock on the entrance.” Avery crossed the room, trying the heavy bar that held the door to Darktown shut. “Yep, this son of a bitch is locked up tighter than the guard house when there's trouble. Maybe it was just a rat or something.”
Moses nodded as he waited for her to return. “It'll give the dogs something to do if they find it.”
“Man, you've been hanging out with Anders too much. Cats go after rats...”
The two shrugged as they left the basement behind, returning it to the darkness. They had better things to do than to look around and wait for something to pop out anyway. With any luck, things would return to normal.
If not, they were heavily armed and fairly skilled.

“Wake up!”
It was really the fact someone was shaking her fucking arm off that woke Avery up. The shout was just an added bonus.
“What the fuck?” She blinked, eyes bleary. Even in the dark, she could make out that someone was standing next to her bed, eyes wide with terror. A few seconds later, she realized that person just so happened to be Leandra. Confusion was replaced by ire as she rubbed her eyes. “The fuck you want, Leandra, I was sl-”
The woman grabbed her arm. “I heard it again! Something's down there!”
Normally, Avery would have told her to fuck off and go back to sleep. It was what she wanted to do on her rare night off, but something about the wide eyes and iron-grip on her forearm prevented her from doing so.
Leandra was terrified. And as much as she might have enjoyed that... she wasn't going to get any rest until she checked it out.
“Fuck, fine... let me get my armor on and I'll go down to check it out. Stay here with Chewy I guess.”
She hopped out of bed, yawning. The human took her place, at least having the common courtesy to sit on top of the blanket instead of crawling under it. This change in motion caused the large dog curled at the foot of the bed to sit up and yawn, cocking her massive head to the side as she watched her owner head over to the armor stand.
Before Chewy could get up, she held out her hand. “You guard Leandra, girl. I've got this.”
Unsurprisingly, her mabari didn't fight too hard to follow her. Loyal as she may have been... she was also fucking tired. Avery couldn't fault her for that as she finished pulling on her armor. Once everything was clicked into place, she grabbed her sword and shield. Both were soon on her back as she left the room.
The house was quiet, unsurprisingly because everyone else was probably fucking asleep. Avery was careful to not walk too loudly, lest her armor-covered feet wake some other unfortunate soul up. She descended the stairs, and soon was heading to where Leandra had heard the noise. Into the dark basement she went, without a light to guide her.
After all, if something was there... well she would get the drop on them. Thank you night vision.
It was quiet in the basement when she got down there. Avery went from room to room, peering in to see if anyone was trying to hide out. However, she found nothing except a lot of dust and the signs that maybe a rat had got in. Rat poop wasn't much to go on, however.
“I'm going to kill Leandra for waking me up. Could probably hide her fucking body in Darktown or something.” She yawned. “I'm going the fuck back to s-”
In the distance, the soft creaking noise stopped her from talking. Avery ducked behind a box, eyes wide as she looked for signs of a disturbance. The bar across the locked door never moved, nor did anything else in the room. Despite that, her heart began to pound as a chill set over the room. She wanted to look away, but she was transfixed on the a point in the middle.
Then she saw the head.
Out of the darkness materialized a gray figure, practically see-through. They stayed there a moment, hovering, before they suddenly dashed to the barred door. They pulled at it with all their might, gestures panicky and frantic. Then they turned, facing the entrance to the room.
It was a girl, probably a few years younger than her. Her face was streaked with tears, and also flecks of blood. She had a scar through her left eyebrow, and she looked as though she hadn't eaten in a long time. To say she looked terrified was putting it mildly.
“N-No, please! I don't...”
The accent was Ferelden, though from where in the country Avery didn't know. She wanted to move, to jump to her aid, but her body was stuck in place. All she could do was watch as the atmosphere grew heavier by the second.
Then the figure went flying, smacking against the wall and sliding down. When they tried to get out, they let out a whimper. An impression formed around their neck – someone's hands. She tried to grab for them, but it was too strong.
“I didn't see you kill anyone, Ajax! Please-”
Then she was gone. The room was silent. With it came the heavy footsteps of a memory as whatever was playing out started to wind down. The footsteps continued right past Avery, sounding as though they were dragging something.
A few seconds later, the mood lifted. It was just a basement again.
Avery's heart was about to beat out of her chest as she leaned against the box, breathing hard. She could see it now – a slight dent in the wall just the size of someone's head. It had been there the entire time and they had never noticed it. Why would they, the basement had been in smuggling hands for quite sometime.
Whoever that girl was... well, she didn't know. She hadn't recognized her face in the brief moment she had seen her. Not part of the Rose was all she could say. One thing was for sure – she was dead. Her bones wee rotting somewhere that nobody would ever find them.
Ajax had probably made sure of that.
“I think I need to ask around tomorrow.” Her voice was shaky as she stood. “Maybe get Varric's help on this one.”
No doubt it was going to keep up until she found whoever this asshole was. Unlucky for him, she was tenacious. That was for sure as she started to climb the steps out of the empty basement. If he was still alive, she was going to find him.
What she was going to do with him... well, she'd figure that out later.

“Damn it's cold tonight.”
“Quiet... someone will hear us.”
Another night, another deal at the docks.
Two men stood in the alley, waiting. Their contact was supposed to be coming an hour after midnight, and the seconds were ticking away. With every one that passed, the anxiety ramped. Had they been turned into the guard?
“We shouldn't have done this... we're not-”
The larger man held up his hand. “Too late to say that. Now shut up. I think I hear someone coming.”
There were footsteps in the distance, and not those of the guard rolling past on patrol. They didn't sound like the heeled shoes of a woman who worked the docks either. Something like relief flooded over the two as they waited.
And then that faded the second the smaller of the two went sailing into a wall.
“There you fucking are.”
The person standing before him was almost half his size, wearing armor that looked as though they had taken it off a dwarf. Their eyes glowed in the moonlight, as did the fangs that were exposed whenever they spoke. His heart began to pound once more as the details started falling into place.
Fuck. It was Hawke.
He held up his hands. “We're not doing anything you need to get involved in, Ha-”
The air left his lungs as her punch found his gut. He was left doubled over, breathing hard as she kicked him hard. Something crunched as he went down onto the cold, dirty ground. All he could do was stare up at her.
Her eyes were burning with rage. “Ajax, right? I've been looking for you, you son of a bitch.”
With surprising strength, she grabbed him by the collar and hauled him against the wall. A sword was soon angled under his neck, right against his jugular. Those eyes never left him as he struggled to get his footing.
“I-I don't...”
She growled – it chilled his bones. “Save it for someone who hasn't been tracking you down. I've got you good on three murders, two assaults, and at least one kidnapping.”
The sword pressed into his neck, but never cut him. “Where the fuck did you put Amelia's body? Tell me and I won't slit your throat and toss you to the sharks.”
The name made his blood run cold as he struggled for breath. Details rushed through his mind – a late night like this one, a dirty shovel, and the pounding of his own heart as he hastily covered everything up. Usually, he was more thorough than that.
But... he had gotten careless.
“I don't know what you're-”
A thin stream of blood trickled down his neck from where she had cut him. “Every lie you tell means you're one second closer to losing your damn head. I'm not going to say it again. Where the fuck is she, Ajax?”
Panic raced through his brain. Though he had never met either Hawke, he had heard enough about them to know she wasn't kidding. Hawke had a body count attached to her name in the high double digits, maybe even triple by now. One more wouldn't make her lose much sleep, especially from how she was glaring at him.
Sometimes, you had to cut and run.
“If I tell you, you have to promise not to tell the guards.”
Hawke laughed, but there was nothing funny about it. “Yeah, that's not going to be a problem. Now, you telling me or what?”
The sword was getting closer to causing some real damage now. It was staring to get harder to breathe as he watched his blood trickle. Nobody was coming to his rescue either – his number two was still on the ground unconscious. Maybe he was dead too, or just concussed. Without him, he was on his own and with his back to the literal wall.
At least it was with someone who wasn't going to run to the guard. They hated each other.
“She's buried in Darktown, near the healer's clinic. There's a barrel over where I dug.” He winced. “Now are you going to let me go?”
The answer came with a quick slide across his neck. Blood spurted in a wide arc as she dropped him. He was left staring, wide eyed as the life drained from him. The last thing he saw before it all went black was Hawke walking away like a woman on a mission.
Then there was nothing.

“Damn it, what's taking so long.”
“Patience, Hawke. It will be over soon.”
She hated talking to Sebastian, but he was kind of her in for this sort of thing. Besides, he knew the Chantry better than she did, and he was more likely to get results. So she was left to stand there, twitching like an unruly child as she waited.
Had she ever mentioned she hated the Chantry? She really fucking did.
Sebastian watched her with a careful eye. “Aveline said you did the city a service by taking Ajax out. Kirkwall is breathing a little easier without him.”
“Amelia isn't.” She crossed her arms over her chest. “But maybe after this she can rest easy. Her sister said she was Andrastian and all...”
That was something she had discovered too during her days of investigation. The girl who had died in her basement had been new to the city a year before she had gotten the house back. She had gone missing and had been presumed dead. That presumption had been proven true when Avery unearthed her bones and the necklace she wore a day prior. Now it was just... taking care of things.
Her sister was up at the front, paying attention to the service that was going on. After that, she'd get Amelia's ashes and... well, Avery was never sure what people did with them. They had buried her father, and it wasn't like she had been able to go back for Carver. It was a mystery she wasn't particularly keen on solving, all things considered.
“It's a miracle you were able to find her bones. Now maybe her family can heal.” He offered her a sort of sad smile. “Are you sure you don't want to say anything to her?”
Avery shook her head as she started towards the door. “No. I don't really know what I could say. Don't think she'll accept 'Hey I saw your sister's ghost get murdered, but at least I found her body under a fucking barrel. Also good news, the guy who did it is dead but that's not much.'”
It wasn't a particularly useful thing to say to someone grieving. She knew that better than anyone.
At least it was bright out when she left the Chantry building proper. Hightown was going about its business, as it always did. It was easy for her to slip in among them as she headed for home, hands in the pockets of her jacket.
With any luck, Amelia wouldn't be coming back to her basement that night. Maybe she was already with her Maker.
“Hope you're ok, wherever you are.” She shook her head as she turned for home. “Rest easy, I guess.”
She let the matter drop after that. There was plenty still to do in Kirkwall, and if she wanted to get any of it done she needed some rest. There was a bed calling her name, and she was going to answer it with open arms.
The rest... she could worry about that later.

Chapter 7
Sam’s POV
I hopped off the plane, lighting myself a cigarette as I went. A chill blew off of the icy Scottish waters and I pulled my fleeced denim closer. Nathan followed out behind me, zipping up his brown leather jacket and Sunny flipped up the fleece collar on her plum leather jacket, tugging at the black fingerless gloves on her small hands. She jumped out, landing with a cute little bounce. I hid my smile with a drag of my cigarette before Sully popped his head out. “You kids be careful up there. Watch each other’s backs.” He said, handing my little brother a communicator. As the two continued to talk, in my peripheral, I watched Sunny walk over to a cliff, watching nature’s scenery as she shielded her eyes from the sun with her hand. I approached her, standing next to her to enjoy the view with her as she lit a cigarette for herself.
“Pretty right?” I asked her as I looked at the amber trees on pure white snow against the perfectly blue sky, jagged rocks cutting across the landscape. She took a drag and placed her hands on her hips.
“It’s gorgeous. Looks just like a painting.” She said, never tearing her eyes away from the dark colored ocean. I tore my gaze away from her as she bit down on a cherry red painted lip. I couldn’t stop staring at her since last night. Even this morning she made me a little nervous as we sat outside the hotel sharing a cigarette and coffee as we were now. I knew I had to get over it though. ‘A girl like that for a guy like me… It’s a miracle she even talks to me.’ I thought, fidgeting with a hangnail on my finger.
“You reckon we’ll find the treasure today?” She asked me and a splash of excitement and anticipation hit me. I enjoyed when she talked sometimes. I liked the fact that she had a tendency to speak like a cowboy...
“God, I hope so…” I mumbled, taking a drag of my cigarette. She nodded with a wide grin full of optimism.
“I think so.” She said taking a drag of her cigarette, scratching a spot on the back of her head. “Or if not thee treasure, then at least some sort of direction on how to get to it.” She looked at me and I just smirked, hoping some of that optimism would rub off on me.
“I believe you.” I answered, looking into the bright sky. Suddenly, Nathan approached us with a sigh, cracking his back. “We all set, little brother?” I ask him.
“Yup. Good to go. You ready, Sunny?” He asked her and she put out her cigarette in the snow. She took a deep breath and turned to us with a blinding smile.
“Ready when you are.” She said.
“Alright then, lead the way.” I gestured and we began our adventure.
We climbed cliffs and descended rock slides until we reached the site. Shoreline supply boxes were strategically placed everywhere, filled with all kindsa shit. Weapons, dynamite, hand grenades… You name it, they had it. “What’s Shoreline?” Sunny asked.
“Well… remember that woman with Rafe? Sully told us it’s her crew. Buncha mercenaries for hire essentially.” Nathan answered. She had her ah-ha moment and didn’t question any further.
“Have you guys ever seen that woman?” She asked with a grin, a blush playing across her cheeks as she spoke of her. “She was ridiculously hot….” Where I looked surprised, my eyebrows shooting up at the thought of her being with a woman, Nathan frowned.
“I saw her fist on my cheek and the bottom of her foot but that was about the extent of it.” He said and Sunny burst into laughter. He pouted a bit and I grinned.
“You let a girl kick your ass?” I laughed a bit too hard and they both stopped to stare at me. I was laughing alone and Sunny bore holes into my skull with a perfectly sculpted brow.
“Want me to kick your ass?” She asked with a hint of warning in her voice. She set back on her heel with her arms crossed. To tell you the truth, I did not want that problem. I’d seen her fight first hand and what she did to those men I did not want done to me. I like my neck where it is. I pulled myself a cigarette and flicked my zippo.
“I’m good.” I said, taking a few steps back. She smirked and shot me a wink that damn near set my heart ablaze.
“That’s what I thought, bitch.” She said before walking to a cliff to climb.
“Woah- ‘bitch’? That's low, Sunny.” I smiled to myself as I watched her walk away. Suddenly, Nathan shushed us and signaled for us to take cover. Sunny pulled her pistol from her leg holster and cocked it, holding it ready and I did the same. We watched as Nathan moved and followed accordingly. He silently took down a soldier and I moved ahead to assist. Sunny jumped another and as we continued to move that way, we didn’t use our guns at all. We put them on safety and tucked them away again until we needed to use them. “So Rafe bought up all this land?” I asked. Just as I finished speaking, the sound of explosions took place in the distance.
“Yeah… and evidently they’ve gotten tired of digging.” Nathan said.
“So they resort to explosives? Because that’s smart as hell.” Sunny commented, sardonically. I grinned as we pushed on.
We fought several Shoreline mercenaries that evening. Honestly, I could’ve used a break. My fists were starting to hurt and I didn’t know if my nose could take another breakage. I grunted as my fist collided with a man’s jaw, shaking off the soreness as I went. My arms were getting heavier and it was harder to breathe. “I gotta quit smokin’...” I said to myself as I pulled my gun to shoot and punch my way out of the tight space. There were too many of them and they were beginning to surround me; had me backed into a corner. ‘Shit. This is it. This is how I go…’ I thought a moment. I closed my eyes, ready for execution when I heard three shots fire in close range, bodies hitting the ground one after the other. When I opened my eyes, I saw Sunny throw her empty gun away and run towards a wall, she kicked off from it, throwing her weight around. She wrapped her arms around a man’s neck and pulled hard. He landed on his back and never got up. Another mercenary approached her from behind. He was a whole head and shoulders about her. She turned to deliver a quite impressive high kick but he simply blocked her. He blocked her attacks like it was nothing and I could see her get tired. He gave a punch so hard it damn near knocked her out. But this guy… I’d seen guys like these before. The ones that enjoy the struggle. With one hand he picked her up by the neck, choking her and held her against a wall, her small feet dangling a few feet from the frozen grass. I felt a flash of adrenaline and the protector in me awakened. The same one that tried to protect my little brother for so long. “HEY! HANDS OFF, ASSHOLE!” I shouted, grabbing an empty long range gun. I tossed it upside down in my hands and bashed it against his head in one fell swoop. As he was knocked off balance, he dropped Sunny. She clutched her throat trying to catch her breath a moment as I attempted to wrestle the guy into submission. We were around the same size so it was a bit of a challenge. But I’ll be damned if I let someone put their hands on her that way. With much struggle, I managed to pin his arms down enough to leave him wide open and I head butted him. I was hard headed as hell so it didn’t hurt me much. When Sunny regained her strength, she kicked him in the back of his knees with a mighty yell, cracking his neck and he fell before her feet. ‘Fuck, that was hot…’ I thought as I watched her wipe a bit of blood off the corner of her lips with the back of her hand. Immediately, I went over to her, holding her petite face in my hands as I listened to Nathan finish the fight, praising himself for a job well done. I was more concerned with Sunny’s well being. “You okay, sweetheart?” I asked her, stroking over the area on her cheekbone that has already begun to bruise as my brother called out for us. She nodded but I could tell she was a bit shaken. She could hold her own in a fight and she was a tough cookie but the fights were getting more and more dangerous, the closer we got to finding Avery’s grave. “Look at me,” I told her as she zoned out for a moment. I stared into her big shiny browns and spoke as honestly and as sincerely as possible. “You’re alright. I won’t let anything happen to you, I swear…” I didn’t mean to let myself be so vulnerable right then but it happened.
“Sam…” She said, her lips trembling. I pulled her into a tight hug.
“You saved my ass again. Let’s try not to make this a reoccurring thing though, yeah?” I joked. I could feel her body relaxing in my arms and she pushed herself away from me with a deep inhale. All this time I had been worried about her slowing us down but she was saving me left and right. I should’ve been listening to my little brother...“We’re almost there. I can feel it.” I told her. She just lit herself a cigarette with a nod and began scavenging the guns and ammo. I followed suit and placed a hand on her shoulder on my way over to Nathan. I puffed on my cigarette as my brother also looked for extra ammunition.
“How is she?” He asked me. I sighed.
“Well she saved my life again and then a guy almost killed her just now so…. She’s about as great as she can be…” Nathan’s head whipped around as I spoke.
“She what?” He asked worriedly. As our heads turned to the fort, she walked out strapped to the nines with guns, her head hanging low.
“She uh… had a slight brush with death. Guy almost choked her out. Definitely wasn’t fun.” I mumbled before taking a drag. Nathan ran over to her and they embraced each other tightly. I sighed, slightly jealous that my younger brother got to know her before me. After a few encouraging words from my brother, she handed out the extra ammo.
“The graveyard should be just through here.” Nathan told us and we followed him into a thick brush of the forest.
We arrived at the graveyard, multiple head stones of varying shapes and sizes were covered in snow. The three of us split up to find Avery’s grave but ultimately Nathan had found it. We pressed around on the headstone hoping it would trigger something but nothing was working. I turned to look back at Sunny who was staring at the plaque with intent. Her eyes narrowed and she raised a brow. “Somethin’ bothering you?” I ask her. She takes a few steps forward to get a better look at the headstone and fixes her mouth to say something.
“I… I don’t know if it should be to the left or to the right but the skull isn’t turned correctly… Or am I just reaching?” She asked us. The light bulb went off in both of our heads with a grin.
“I love you, Sunny.” Nathan said simply and she crossed her arms with a smile.
“I know.” She seemed quite proud of herself. I watched as Nathan turned the skull to the right and a rumble began beneath our feet. Suddenly, a secret stairway appeared before us, right next to his grave.
“I bet you Shoreline hasn’t found this.” my brother laughs proudly in amusement as the three of us peered into the opening. It was dark and dusty down there.
“Whaddya think we’ll find in it?” Sunny asked, scrunching up her nose that had begun to turn red and chapped against the harsh cold.
“Let’s find out…” I said pulling a flashlight from my pocket. “Ladies first?” I teased, picking up that she wasn’t going to enjoy this very much. She looked at me with a smile before speaking to me in a soft and kind voice.
“Sure! After you, Princess.” She said sarcastically, gesturing to the entrance.
“Oh, ha ha. You’re funny.” I replied unamused as Nathan chuckled. She pulled out her flashlight as my brother descended the stairway and we followed behind him. As we navigated the hall we found ourselves in a crypt. Sunny posted herself up in a corner, nervously tapping her foot as my brother and I looked around. I chuckled at her as I looked inside an open coffin; Nothing but spiderwebs and dry bones. Everywhere. I sighed looking at her. “You hangin’ in there, sweetheart?” I asked her loudly. She mumbled something incoherently, scratching her head.
“She always did get a little antsy around skeletons.” Nathan told me as he shined his light on the wall of open coffins.
“Really?” I was absolutely amused by this. “You get shot at all day, climb mountains, kick people’s asses like they stole your last fry but skeletons…?” I teased her about it mercilessly as we continued down a hall to more coffins. She backed into a far corner of the room and when I saw what I saw, I decided not to tell her. I just wanted to see what would happen. I tapped my brother in the chest with the back of my hand pointing towards her with a sly grin. Sunny sat down on a half opened coffin, not realizing that a body was half hanging out of it. She set back on her hands and looked down to swing her feet when she noticed the dusty skull staring back at her. Almost immediately she screamed and ran over to me, gripping my jacket tightly as she hid behind me. I keeled over in laughter with my brother as he pushed on to the next room.
“It’s not funny!” She exclaimed, punching me on the back of my arm rather hard. It left a lingering sting as I massaged the spot, still laughing at her reaction as I followed him.
We came across a larger room suddenly and my laughter ceased. A depiction of the crucified trio stood before us in bold marble.
“Sunny… I think this might be a you thing…” Nathan said as we assessed the situation before us. I looked over at her as a smirk curled her lips. She strutted around analyzing the contraption and circling around to find a door behind the wall. She pressed against it briefly, however it didn’t open. I stood next to her to assist but still it didn’t budge. She twisted her lips as she looked around. On the wall behind her we’re lamps ready to be lit. “Aye, Smokey. Light it.” My brother said in our general direction.
“I don’t know which one of us you’re talking to but that hurts my feelings regardless.” I commented as Sunny snickered, flicking her black matte zippo. I flicked mine and assisted lighting the lamps. Suddenly the contraption shifted and a magnifying glass appeared where the crosses were. Streams of light began to shine on the door in a pattern to match the gems laid into it.
“Well fuck…” she mumbled. She walked around the wall again to see through the peepholes near the crosses, smiling as she immediately figured out what to do. “Sit tight, boys. I got this.” She said as she leaned over, giving me an incredible view of her ass.
“Please… take your time.” I smirked as I leaned against a nearby wall to watch her work.

6: Snow
When my alarm clock sounded the next morning, a low grumble made its way up my throat. It was Monday, and worse, Harry was downstairs asleep on my couch.
I forced myself to get out of bed, if I had it my way I would have stayed there all day under the warm blankets pretending that none of this ever happened and that I was back to my normal life before Harry Styles entered it and caused havoc.
The hardwood was cold as ice beneath my feet, the entire apartment always stayed cooler than necessary even with the heat on. I prompted for a quick ten minute shower to warm me and waken me for the hellish day I knew was to come; although it wouldn't be until I got my first caffeine fix of the morning would I truly feel alive.
I quickly got dressed dismissing the idea of looking decent today, it was Monday after all, pulling my hair up into a tight bun on my head and pinching my pale lifeless cheeks to give myself some color, England really was turning me into a ghost with the constant overcast.
I stepped out into the hallway and instantaneously my nostrils filled with the delightful scent of coffee beans, which meant two things, there was fresh brewed coffee, and Harry was awake downstairs.
I retreated slowly down the stairs, with any luck he was already gone and had just made himself a cup before leaving. I noticed the blanket he had used the previous night before was folded neatly and the pillow placed on top on the coffee table, he had at least taken the liberty of cleaning after himself.
I entered the kitchen and unfortunately found him leaning against the countertop gripping a mug in his hand looking pensively at the ground, his face changing when he noticed me coming through the doorway.
"Avery, good morning, you look-"
"Thrown together, I know, it's Monday."
"I was going to say lovely, actually, although I do prefer your hair down if I'm being honest."
I felt a small blush creep on my cheeks but dismissed it as I brushed past him to grab a thermos out of the cabinet, one cup wasn't going to do today.
"So Harry about last night-" I started, pouring coffee into the thermos.
"Save it," he said and I turned to look at him. "It was nothing, I know, you were exhausted, no doubt still high on adrenaline from everything that happened; really no big deal."
Taken back from his cool demeanor and politeness I just nodded, happy that things weren't awkward.
"How's the uh, stitches?" I asked stirring in the cream and sugar.
"Fine, a little sore but nothing I can't bounce back from." Harry said taking his last swig of coffee before washing the cup out and sitting it in the sink.
"Thank you, by the way." He said running a hand through his tousled hair.
"For?"
"For letting me stay here last night, I know Devlin wasn't keen on it."
"Devlin is just, indifferent."
"She shot me a glare this morning before she left." He said chuckling and I frowned.
"She's normally very hospitable."
"Hey, for her to let me sleep under the same roof for the night was plenty hospitality for me."
"So, where are you going to go?" I asked taking the first sip of my coffee, the steamy liquid arousing a little bit of life within me.
"Not entirely sure yet, I figured I'd walk around for awhile until I figured it out."
There it was again, the pang of guilt that I should not be feeling for Harry but yet, there it was. He was being so nice this morning, a huge shift from his normal cocky attitude, I guess that was another reason I blurted out my next sentence.
"I'll give you a ride. I mean, is there somewhere I can drop you off at? I really would hate for you to have to walk in this freezing cold."
Harry shrugged and ran a hand through his hair again, a nervous habit I suspected.
"I guess you could maybe drop me at my fathers, as much as I'm sure he'll be thrilled to see me, there's a few things I need to discuss with him."
"Right okay, no problem where does he live?"
"In West Worth Manor, the gated community."
West Worth Manor, that was a big rich community, then again his father had to be wealthy with him being able to bond Harry out.
"Sure, not a problem." I said taking another sip of my coffee, heading towards the door.
"Just let me grab my things and we can go."
Harry followed me into the living room where I gathered my laptop, purse and jacket, checking my phone I still had an hour before I had to be at work, I liked to get there early and beat morning traffic.
I grabbed my keys off the hook beside the door allowing Harry to step out into the hallway before myself, locking the door behind me.
It was cold in the hallway, colder than usual. We boarded the elevator in silence.
When we got down to the lobby I noticed Harry smirking and I turned to see what he was looking at.
Fat white snowflakes were falling rapidly from the sky, and there was already a thick white blanket covering everything as far as the eye could see.
"Oh you have got to be kidding me." I said scrunching up my nose.
"What? It's just a little snow." Harry offered and I grumbled.
"I'm wearing heels, I'll break my neck!"
"Well why don't you go change?" He suggested and I shook my head.
"No, I don't have time, let's just go." I said and he nodded following me to the door.
Outside wind whipped around while the snowflakes peppered down fast and heavy, my nose burned with the familiar tingling sensation, it did this every time it snowed.
"Right so where are you parked?" Harry asked and I sighed.
"Normally I park in the car deck but it was full when I came home yesterday so I had to park...there." I said gesturing to my car, all the way across the parking lot, which at the moment was a frozen tundra of ice, a death trap waiting to happen.
"I can pull it around if you'd like?" Harry offered and I shook my head.
"No, no, I can do it." I insisted and he shrugged.
I hitched my bag up over my shoulder and started slowly but surely across the parking lot, if I didn't know any better I'd say I was ice skating all over again. The thin layer of ice hidden under the snow showed no mercy on me or my heels, and I almost ate the dust quite a few times, but; somehow successfully I had made it to my car.
"Okay, now I'll get in and-" I started to say when I lost my footing on a patch of particularly slicker ice.
"Avery!" I heard Harry's voice shout.
"Harry?" I said blinking up at him, the snow was falling rapidly against my face and it was bright, too bright, Harry's face looked concerned as he was peering down at me, his cheeks and nose rosy red from the chill biting at them, snow flakes peppering his hair, he looked adorable.
"Are you okay?" He asked and I nodded.
"I'm, I- ow!" I shouted suddenly, pain shooting up my elbow into my arm.
"I think, my arm-"
"You're laying on it weird, you landed on top of it, can you move it?" He asked and I very gingerly tugged at my arm beneath me and a whole new wave of pain skyrocketed through it.
"SHIT!" I yelled out and he raked a hand through his hair.
"I bet it's broken."
"Damn it, damn it, damn it."
"Here, we need to go to the hospital and get it looked at." Harry stated and I felt his arms under me again.
"I'm going to lift you, it's gonna hurt but I have to okay?" He asked and I sighed.
"Fine."
I felt him tug on my body and there was the shock of pain searing through my arm like white hot iron.
"Fuck!"
"Wow, someone's got a potty mouth." Harry joked and I shot him a glare.
"Sorry."
"Just hurry up." I whimpered and he opened the car door and with as much gentleness as he could, slid me into the passenger seat.
"Keys." He said holding out a hand and I reluctantly fished them out of my bag and handed them to him.
He stalked around to the other side and slid in smoothly, putting the key into the ignition my car roared to life.
"Nice car, what model is this?" He asked inquisitively.
"Harry." I grumbled.
"Right, sorry."

I broke my arm in two places, the doctor put me in a cast against my many attempts to talk him into just putting it into a brace, or a sling. He also took me out of work for a week to let it heal, all in all this Monday could have gone better.
"How do you feel?" Harry asked, the painkillers the doctor had prescribed me had started kicking in and at the moment I didn't feel any pain.
"Not bad, pretty good, kinda hungry."
He chuckled and turned on the radio, Crazy by Aerosmith was playing.
"Aerosmith huh? Classic rock fan?" He asked smirking and I nodded.
"Yeah, so? Problem?"
"No problem." He said shaking his head, it was at the end of the song and surprisingly enough he knew all the words.
The beginning chords of the next song made him turn and look at me.
"Wham? What kind of CD is this?" He asked as "Careless Whisper" began filling the car.
"A burnt CD, really old actually, Dev burnt this one for me on my eighteenth birthday, Eighteen And Life is on this one, and there's another one up there," I said gesturing to my CD case attached to my visor, "That has "Seventeen" By Winger on it, she kind of always made CD's for me for my birthday every year.
"Hmm, thoughtful, I like it. How long have you known Devlin?"
"Since we were kids. She lived down the street from me and we rode the bus together, we've always been inseparable, we've worked our entire lives around each other." I said and Harry nodded pursing his lips.
"Must be nice to have a friend like that."
"Yeah, have you never had a close friend?" I asked and he shrugged.
"Not really, I guess Doug would have been my best friend growing up.."
I felt a knot in my stomach.
"Aw Harry I'm sorry-"
"Don't, it's fine, it happens."
"It shouldn't happen though, no one should have to go that young."
"You're right." He agreed and then promptly began to sing along with the music to avoid any more sad conversation topics.
Surprisingly he had quite the singing voice, it took me by surprise but I pretended not to notice, afraid he might stop if I commented on it.
Soon enough we were pulling up at my apartment and Harry hopped out, coming over to my side where he opened the door and helped me out carefully.
"Here," he said looping my arm around his neck for support, "Don't want a repeat of that again."
I nodded and he helped me back across the parking lot, the snow still coming down in quarter sized flakes.
Once inside he shook the free snow from his hair and I took notice once again to his flushed complexion, matched with his wildly kept hair and bright colored eyes he was handsome without a doubt.
Get ahold of yourself Avery, you're gawking, it has to be the medicine.
We boarded the elevator and I leaned against the wall.
"I'm sorry your day didn't turn out quite like you'd have wanted it." Harry said and I shrugged.
"I'm honestly thankful you were there, if that had happened to me by myself, I'd of really been screwed."
He shrugged and I heard the ding of the elevator as we reached my floor, the doors opened up.
We stepped off and I immediately froze, there outside my apartment door, clad in his uniform stood Tristan.

Info: Ollie confronts Bryce after spending a night with Lola in a hotel room, in wake of news hitting about Addison’s sudden departure. The two guys talk things through, in which Ollie is the only one that is able to get through Bryce’s thick skull. After Ollie finally admitting the truth about what happened in his relationship with Bryce’s younger sister, and after Bryce admitting that he very much attempted to convince Lola to cheat on the him, the two finally decide to make a truce -- admitting just how much they missed how they once were, and how much they missed each other.

Bryce had been feeling quite content with his life right now. He wasn’t deployed at the moment, his sister was fine and healthy, and he had two beautiful girls in his life and he continued to fall for daily…and they didn’t really have a problem with the fact that there were two of them. And yet, he still felt as though something had been missing; and it was Lola. He knew he needed the space from her in order to move on, for the sake of her, Ollie, and himself. And yet, he felt guilty for the way he’d been acting towards her, towards Ollie, and towards the couple’s relationship. He so desperately wanted to be happy for the two of them because at the end of the day, Ollie was practically like a brother to him, and Lola was one of his greatest friends. The man had to give himself some credit though, as it was starting to get easier. With it being already a month, the thought of the couple hurt less and less as each day passed. Still, he decided to get these emotions out by working out, causing him to hit the football field where the track was also located. Right when he was beginning to pack up to leave, he could hear footsteps approaching from a far, causing him to turn around. “The field’s yours. I was just leaving.” He stated simply, picking up his duffle bag so that the strap had been resting easily on his shoulder as he began to walk past the other male.
Lola and Ollie had only just gotten back from their night in that hotel that very morning, and yet Ollie didn’t feel any less uneasy about what had been happening. With one hell of a year he had with the girl, it was safe to say that he was more than just a little bit protective over her. He was very protected over her; over her well being, her feelings, and practically anything imaginable. Which is exactly why it hasn’t been easy for him to bite his tongue on the whole Bryce situation. Luckily enough, the two dumbasses never stopped sharing their location with one another, and Ollie was quickly able to find the other male. His movements were halted to a stop when the other man turned around. “I came to talk to you.” He stated simply with a shrug, brows furrowing in confusion. Was Bryce really going to act as though the two were strangers, when in fact they were basically one and the same? An exaggerated sigh slipped through his lips, his eyes rolling as the other walked right past him.
It genuinely did hurt Bryce to see his friendship with Ollie crumble the way it did ever since he got returned to Monarch. So much so, Bryce was starting to think that he shouldn’t have ever came back - that he should’ve just continued to travel and move around from state to state, country to country. “There’s nothing to talk about here!” He shouted, continuing to walk across the field. He knew what Ollie wanted to talk about, but this wasn’t the time nor the place; but then again, was there ever going to be a right time for this?
Ollie had been tired of Bryce’s shit. Other people may have been willing to deal with the little games that he wanted to play, but Ollie didn’t. Picking up one of the loose footballs that had been on the turf, he immediately threw it - throwing it far enough for that it hit the male right in the center of his back, causing him to finally stop walking. “Great, now that I have your attention…” He began to walk simultaneously as he spoke, inching his way closer and closer to the dark haired male. “I don’t know what the hell is happening between you and Lola, but you need to make shit right with her.”
Feeling a ball hit him right in the center of his back, Bryce’s movements were immediately brought to a halt. He didn’t approve of Ollie’s communication technique, but he had to respect it. Dropping his duffle bag onto the turf grass, he turned around. “Why?” He asked rhetorically, his lips turning into that cocky smirk that would probably end up with him getting punched in the face.
“You’re really going to play this whole why game right now? You know why.” Ollie spat back, shaking his head and his brows continuing to furrow in confusion. This seemed to be the facial expression Ollie wore when talking to Bryce, as least as of lately. “You were her first love, but more importantly you were her best friend. She’s spent years worrying about you, just like the rest of us. Worrying about your well being and whether or not you were going to ever make it back home. She’s remained by your side throughout every little thing, even when you continue to treat her shit. Not telling her about your father dying and her having to find out from me and Allison is one thing, but this is fucking low of you, Bryce. She’s going through enough already with Addison leaving, and now she feels like she’s losing one of the only people who really matter to her. She misses you. So you need to get your head out of your ass and get off your damn high horse because she needs the guy that was so excited to see her when he first landed.”
“You got exactly what you wanted. The ex, or not so ex, boyfriend officially out of the picture of your girls life. That’s practically any guys dream.” He said with a scoff. “You got it all, James. You got out of the damn system, out of that stupid prep school in which the only thing you had in common with us top five percenters was the uniform…you got out of Connecticut, landed a great athletic scholarship. You’re still popular as all hell and the guy that most people admire, even platonically. You got the life you always were meant to have, and you got the girl who is obviously crazy about you if she hasn’t jumped back into bed with me yet. You got it all, so why the hell are you so caught up on this?”
“Because you’re my best friend, and you know that I wouldn’t have ever even thought about getting with her if you would’ve just told me about her when you were here last year.” Ollie’s voice was basically a whisper at this point, almost inaudible as he too also got in tune with his feelings. The thought about doing such a thing began to stress the male out, causing him to run a hand lazily through his hair. “…and just like she needs you, so do I. It’s hard hearing your name around and me trying to act like I know you, when right now you really feel like a stranger.”
Ollie’s words almost knocked the wind right out of Bryce’s chest. The two boys knew almost everything about each other, and yet vulnerable moments like this weren’t common for the pair of close friends. Placing his hands on his hips, he let out a soft sigh. “I’m surprised you haven’t tried to swing yet. You tell me that you seated a guy’s ass over something he said to Lola, and yet I remain bruise free.” Bryce stated randomly. He knew Ollie well enough to know that he didn’t do well with vulnerability. And quite frankly, neither did he.
“Oh trust me, in a perfect world we would’ve fought at least three times by now. At least.” Ollie stated, only half-jokingly; the comment causing him to gently chuckle. He knew there was no way in hell he would ever fight Bryce, at least not right now, considering the circumstances. “That, and me doing that would make me the biggest hypocrite.”
Hearing Ollie’s last statement caused a confusion expression to also take over Bryce’s face, his head also tilting in the slightest bit of curiosity. He didn’t really have to say anything for the other male to know he had been questioning it.
“I can’t kick your ass for only being a dick to Lola when I cheated on your sister…multiple times.” Ollie admitted, speaking again quickly before he could be interrupted. “Allison didn’t want to tell you because she didn’t want to ruin our friendship - something I’ve always been very grateful of. I don’t know how were were able to hide it from you all this time…but yeah. So unfortunately, I will not be kicking your ass today because you should’ve kicked mine a long time ago.”
Hearing the news completely took Bryce by surprise. “What the fu— what?” He asked, his voice slightly pitched as he continued to process the bomb that had been dropped. Bryce knew that the breakup between his sister and friend wasn’t the most amicable, but he certainly didn’t think that. Then again, a part of him wasn’t surprised; girls were always on top of the two in high school, and Ollie being damaged on top of his sisters desire to go for the problematic guys — it made sense. He allowed there to be a pause, longing out the silence that quickly settled between the two before blurting out: “I tried to convince Lola to cheat on you, like really tried. And then when she insisted that she didn’t want it, I kind of dismissed her.”
The silence that grew between the two was becoming more and more daunting as the seconds passed; and what was only a few moments felt like several minutes to the green eyed male. When the other finally spoke, it was officially Ollie’s turn to be taken by surprise. He would like to say he was completely surprised, but honestly — this was definitely something Bryce would do just to spite both him and Lola. And yet, even with knowing the other man’s tactics, Ollie found himself biting his own tongue, hard. “Yup, we’re even.”
Chuckling, Bryce’s ice cold demeanor began to warm up a bit, and he finally broke out into a smile. “Rethinking that whole ‘let me not kill Bryce’ tactic?” He asked through his subtle laughter.
“Don’t push it, Cortez.” Ollie couldn’t help but to also break out into soft laughter, shaking his head at the thought. He had no idea what the hell was going on at this point, but he was just glad that he probably had finally gotten through Bryce.
“Yes, Sergeant James, sir.”  It took a couple of moments before Bryce’s laughter ceased. He didn’t know how, but the wall between the two boys was slowly beginning to dissipate. “What the hell happened to us, man? It’s always been you and me, since the very beginning. There was once a time we were sharing girls, and now we’re fucking fighting over them.” He laughed once more at the thought. The two really had changed. “You know, I don’t know what was more hard about this. Fighting with Lola, or fighting with you. I swear, every time Amber-Jade brought you up, a part of me wanted to cry. It was like you and I broke up, not me and Lola.”
Ollie couldn’t help but to also laugh as the other spoke, especially when he began reminiscing about the past. “I have no fucking clue. Looks like Lola just has that much hold over us.” He laughed, only for a moment before growing quiet once more. “Speaking of Amber…do you really like her, or is this just another game?”
“I really do like her. A lot, actually. I don’t think I’ve ever fallen for someone this quickly. She gets me in a way that nobody does. I think the problem with this whole Lola and Avery situation was that…it was the fact that Lola and I were so fucked up when we first happened, and yet we were perfect for each other. There was no way in hell we could actually be together, at least not in that time — I would’ve just hurt her, even more that I have. As for Avery — well, she’s a lot like Jessica, which is what I admire about her…but she’s too positive, too pure, especially for me, but I haven’t been able to let her go. Amber-Jade’s that perfect balance. She gets me, and I’m lucky that I get to have both her and Avery…if I get my shit together.” He admitted, quite quickly as if he had been dying to tell the other male this. “What about you? Are you really happy with Lola?”
Ollie couldn’t help but to smile as he spoke about Amber. The only thing he ever wanted for her was happiness and security. And as fucked up and flawed as Bryce was, he had a feeling he could bring her just that. Although, he would be lying if he said his chest didn’t tighten slightly at the mention of Jessica, who also happened to be a close friend of his own before her sudden passing. “Yeah, I am.” He stated simply. “Actually, I’m really fucking happy. I love her, more than I could even bare to describe. I look at her, and I see my wife. She makes me want to get better, every damn day. Even the days where it seems easier to resort back to my old ways, I just take one look at her and I’m immediately grounded again. My world could be on fire, and I would still be convinced that everything is going to end up okay because I have her. I don’t know how to explain it…but man, she’s practically my entire world.” He paused, hesitating slightly before saying his next comment. “I’m actually going to propose to her next week.”
Again, Ollie didn’t fail to grab Bryce by surprise, causing him to gap at the mans comment. “Oh shit…you’re serious.” He simply stated, words completely failing him in that moment. “She’s going to be over the moon, you know that right? Congratulations man. I’m happy for you, Ollie, really. I always knew you were going to make it, you deserve this. Shit, you both do.”
“Thank you…but this is why I need you to make things right with her. With Addison gone, and the rest of her ‘people’ being half absent, she’s going to need someone to be happy for her. And she deserve that. She’s everyone’s person and the one to bend backwards for the people she loves, she deserves to have that.” Ollie ran a hand quickly through his hair again. “And I wouldn’t feel right doing this if it meant that you would be out of mine, and her, life permanently.”
Bryce really took Ollie’s words into consideration, absorbing each and every word he was saying. “I’m sorry, Ollie — for everything. I’ll make things right with her. I miss her, more than anything. And I miss you.” With that, he decided to drop the whole soft crap. The two didn’t do that well either. “Now, are we going to fight, or are we gonna hug this shit out.” He asked with a smirk, opening up his arms.
Rolling his eyes, Ollie scoffed at the gesture. “I guess we’re not going to fight, today at least. Pull this shit again, and I may have to reconsider.” His statement came out as a joke, and he easily opened his own arms and pulled the other man into a big bear hug, accepting his offer of the embrace.
Bryce found himself smiling into the hug, the embrace warm, and welcoming. He missed Ollie, more than he’d like to admit. “I can’t believe our little Ollie pop is getting married!” He exclaimed, quickly kissing the other males cheek as he pulled away from the gesture.
“What the fuck, Bryce.” Ollie laughed, rolling his eyes as the two let go of each other, Ollie immediately bringing his hand up to his cheek, frantically wiping the others kiss away. “I already have to deal with Lola and Noah on my ass. Now you.” He jokingly scoffed as he began to slowly walk, making his way off the field.
“Can you blame them? It’s a nice ass you got there.” Joking, Bryce lightly tapped the others ass, kind of like the way the the players did on the field during their games. Still, he found himself also beginning to walk off the field, following the other male.
“You know how Chris Evans has American’s ass? Well this is Monarch’s ass, that’s for damn sure.”
“Oh fuck off, James.” Bryce immediately nudge the other male playfully, the two boys bursting out into delightful laughter as they began making their way towards the parking lot — Ollie getting in his truck to go back home to his girlfriend, and Bryce getting in his own truck to go see Amber-Jade. It’s crazy how things played out, and how even when they couldn’t help it, the two boys would always be connected — in every way possible.
