1.) Are you named after anyone?

Not really. There was a playboy bunny in the news at the time who had the same name but I'm not sure that seeing the name in gossip magazines counts lol

2.) When was the last time you cried?

The last time I answered one of these lol, back in early July when I was in the process of actively missing my vacation to Iceland because my passport renewal didn't come in time. Fun fact: it came the day I would have gotten back :)

3.) Do you have kids?

Nope and never, is the plan!

4.) What sports do you play/have played?

I played lacrosse and I fenced (sabre)! I did both through college, fencing for 7 years and lacrosse for 14. I also used to powerlift (3 years) and kickbox (6 years, RIP to my gym that closed this summer :/) These days I play pickup basketball and intramural dodgeball when the league can get its act together, and I'm thinking of taking lifting back up again

5.) Do you use sarcasm?

Yes, I'm a sarcastic/dry comment factory

6.) What’s the first thing you notice about people?

...Their height? I don't actually know. I size them up to asses whether I could take them in a fight? But not like consciously, it's just...a thing lol

I like to write, to read, I bake and cook, I spend a lot of time playing with my cat because he is a needy, demanding creature with sharp teeth, all the above-mentioned sports. I also coach, and I've got two regular cook new food/try new restaurant crews and a bookclub that keep me busy

History! I was a history and a classics major in college.

Shocker of shockers, I actually really love my current job! If money were no object I would probably continue to do it, but eventually I would want to like...work in a bookstore. I used to in highschool and college and I loved it an I am very well suited to like, repetitive-task-public-interaction environments (I'd also love to be a glassblower or carpenter but only for fun I think. No monetizing my dreams)

1. are you named after anyone?

fun fact, my mom named me after a character in one of her favorite soap operas. i cannot for the life of me remember its name currently though... but i do remember that the character i was named after was a witch. :-] and that she is/was the big bad. very cool.

2. when was the last time you cried?

today at work because i got stressed and aggravated over something that's been happening over a span of a few years looool 💔

3. do you have kids?

no. could you imagine. ach, the horror

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

yeah......... but only with people i know understand my sense of humor and my tendency to rely on it. i always try and denote where and when i'm being sarcastic, though, just in case! if nothing else, i go very ham on it and make it verrrrry obvious (or try to!) that that is my intention

5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

their tone, honestly? i gather first impressions based off a person's tone and overall "vibes". after that, i tend towards the eyes and whether or not they make eye contact with me. unfortunately for them i have anxiety and i simply do not like making eye contact

a nice, simple, and humble blue :-D

7. scary movies or happy endings?

i vote for the middle ground of scary movies with happy endings because i'm a bleeding heart but i also enjoy getting scared shitless 😔💨

1. Are you named after anyone?

No, although my middle name is a family name.

2. When was the last time you cried?

I think a few weeks ago? I watched "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" and KJBSDFKBJD. Like that movie is such a fun mix of WTF is even going on craziness and contemplating the point of existence and exploring complicated family feelings and the end is weirdly heartwarming--particularly the interactions between the mother and daughter, which is what really got me. And I was watching with one of my best friends and like right after the movie ended he was like "if we were rocks you'd be the googly eyes"--which makes no sense if you haven't seen the movie but that made me cry again because kajdfbksjbf it was so oddly sweet. (Though that was a mixture of hysterical laughter and crying ajsdjfsvjhv in a good way though!)

3. Do you have kids?

nope. maybe one day if i ever get my life together LOL

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

idk if it's a lot?? though i'm probably single-handedly responsible for teaching my brother sarcasm (he's 7 years younger than me so when he was learning would have been right as i was entering those peak sarcasm years LOL)

sarcasm is still deeply engrained in me though, and i nowadays when i use it i definitely pay more attention to how people react to it (ie whether they picked up on it) because i tend to deliver it in a very matter-of-fact voice. like, one of my favourite stupid sarcastic comments to make is whenever something weird weather-wise happens i'll be "but thank god climate change is fake, right?" and KJABFDKSJBD i've gotten some WEIRD LOOKS saying that one around ppl who don't know me that well and then i have to explain myself 😭

5. What sports do you play/have played?

i used to figure skate!! my mom was a coach when i was growing up, so i would joke that i lived part-time at the ice rink. it was kind of inevitable 😂. but i was never good at the jumps. i prefered ice dance or synchronized skating (think synchronized swimming but on the ice)

and i also used to play hockey!? very different environment LOL and my hockey teammates would sometimes tease me for showing up to a game in a dress after skating practice on days i had both but it was all in good fun

now...now i really SHOULD do something kajsdkbfsj

i...really have no idea.

happy endings. scary movies don't really freak me out but i guess i just find them sort of...low-reward? i'm not a movie person to begin with because it's hard for me to get invested in the characters in such a short amount of time. with horror movies that's even harder because they're all about shock value instead of getting to know the characters

i am very very good at puns. does that count? 😂

11. What are your hobbies?

when i have energy/motivation i really enjoy cooking (or baking, but with baking i have to actually measure ingredients and with cooking i just sort of go with the flow). my new apartment is going to have space for a dishwasher--which really is the most exciting thing in my life right now--so i'm hoping that motivates me to cook more!!

12. Do you have pets?

yes!!! i have a ginger cat and her name is Curie (namesake Marie Curie because i'm a proud little nerd like that). I love her she's so stupid and has tried to eat plastic TOO MANY TIMES but every morning and night she will curl up on my chest when i'm in bed and she's just a precious bean

13. How tall are you?

5'5.5 (166cm). but i would have been taller if my spine had known how to grow straight 😔

14. Favorite subject in school?

science!! i had the same science teacher in high school from grades 8-10 (aka the only teacher in the french immersion department who was really qualified to teach it 😂) and i ADORED HER. from day one i was hooked--like she even made syllabus day fun. so i owe my love of science in part to her, really.

in university i realized i liked chemistry best amongst the sciences, so that was my major. and my favourite class i ever took was intro to quantum chemistry (which is really just quantum physics but the math was geared more towards what us chemistry students were familiar with)

15. Dream job?

okay, avoiding the typical "i do not dream of labour" answer...i really don't know. which is a problem. like i genuinely have no idea what i could do long-term that would actually make me happy and i just hope i figure it out at some point akjsdkfsjbd ... I feel like I was not supposed to leave paragraph responses for some of these but akjfkdsjbgd i can admit i like to talk about myself, okay? Anyways! Hip-Hop Royalty: Capital Steez

"Dear diary, what a day it's been." - from Free The Robots

Prior to 2023, if you had asked me who Capital Steez was, I honestly would've drawn a blank.

This isn't a note on the ferocious talent of this young man, but more so an admission of how much of an old ass, I actually am.

But sure enough, in 2023, I became familiar with the music of Steez, and needless to say, I haven't stopped listening, since.

STEEZ was born Courtney Everald Dewar Jr. on July 7th, 1993 in Brooklyn, New York (city). He attended the well known Edward R. Murrow High School.

According to his wiki, STEEZ was a happy kid. Always with a smile on his face, he would don a short afro and skinny jeans.

During the late 2000's, STEEZ co-founded the PRO ERA rap collective with childhood friend and fellow rapper Joey Badass.

Have you ever heard of the Beast Coast Movement? Well, it was (and is) a thing.

Apparently it was a term that STEEZ used to describe the musical conglomerate that was PRO ERA, Flatbush Zombies, and The Underachievers.

Unfortunately, on December 23rd, 2012, Courtney ended his life.

But, I don't want this entire to piece to be about his passing. I would like to discuss his talent and legacy left on hip hop.

Lol! Apparently, he had a sense of humor, too.

His Music

I always know when a song, particularly a rap song is good, because I'll be listening to it, and say, "This is what I'm talking about!"

It's like when you've been looking for a particular brand of butter for months. Yeah, the others are good and get the job done, but THIS kind of butter makes food fun and nutritious.

That's the feeling I got when I first listened to Apex.

First what I love about this video is how fun it is. I appreciate the jovial, fun energy that's only complimented by half serious, half jokey lyrics.

Maybe I'm biased, because this is one of my favorite types of rap styles.

Also, do you hear that beat?

Another one I really enjoy listening to is Free The Robots.

This video definitely is giving me liminal space vibes. Anyone else? No?

I really appreciate how there's different clips, and videos from different sources. Feels like STEEZ was trying to convey a message with all the clips arranged like so.

Now, with the music: I feel hypnotized. Just listening to this makes me feel dreamy, but also really really dreary. You ever seen Requiem For A Dream? | Yeah, that kind of dreamy/dreary.

Which is coincidental, because throughout the song, STEEZ mentions how destructive drugs have been to him personally and the world at large.

STEEZ also touches on politics, very heavily here, such as 9/11 and certain ways he'd like past presidents to be dealt with. :)

AmeriKKKan Korruption | King Capital

So, there is an album.

Or rather, a mixtape.

Capital STEEZ had released a solo mixtape titled AmeriKKKan Korruption, on April 7th, 2012.

The mixtape contained a total of 14 tracks, although a number of other rappers, producers and PRO ERA members have graciously contributed to its track count.

After his passing, in 2013 there had been an announcement by friend and fellow rapper Joey Badass that a posthumous album, titled King Capital would be released. While a song did come of it (King Steelo), the album King Capital would never actually be released.

On January 2nd, 2018, Joey Badass stated to fans that due to legalities, the album's release would be delayed to later that year.

As of 2024, the project King Capital is still unreleased.

His Legacy

I'm not sure what things would have looked like for STEEZ had he survived throughout the years.

What I will say, is that a talent and voice like he had is desperately needed now. In fact, maybe STEEZ's energy is still alive and well in some other rapper who just may have the talent, but hasn't been tweeted about by XXL.

Maybe we need to begin searching out talented artists, and boosting them up ourselves.

Also, it goes without mentioning, that it was said that STEEZ had been dealing with some emotional battles. I want to say that if you find yourself dealing with emotional, mental issues, getting help doesn't make you weak.

But taking your life doesn't make you weak either. It just means the help you needed didn't arrive on time.

favourite book : This will sound soooooo odd. But I read a book called 'Fire Bringer' when I was about 9 or 10, which was based in what I believe was Scottish mythology (and I adhered to that, being Irish) and it had a deer fawn born with a prophesised birth mark and was very interesting. I believe the author was David Clement-Davies. I still adore this book a lifetime later.

* Also I adore the trilogy by Marita Conlon-McKenna (Irish Author) which chronologies An Gorta Mór (the Great Famine) in her books Under The Hawthorn Tree, Wildflower Girl and Fields of Home. Brilliant short stories which pinpoint a time in our history through the lens of children. I read them as a 8 or 9 year old and still consider them very treasured reads.

last film / show : Last show was Avatar: The Last Airbender (live action) and Shogun. I have to finish Avatar yet, but I adore the animated series and I like the live action series so far, so I'll have good thing to say. As for Shogun, I came in arse-ways and watched the 5th episode first (because my dad watched all the rest and both of us were drinking together and he put it on ... anyway, I ate, no crumbs.). Looooving it so far. Need to do my retro-watching of the previous episodes. Cosmo Jarvis is giving me Jax Teller vibes for some reason and I can't pinpoint it.

recent reads : Ooooooh, such a changeable topic. At the moment, I'm adoring the author 'Tom Marcus' - a former British intelligence agent publishing under a pseudonym. Fantastic author who plops you right into the action and faultlessly explains usable aspects of spycraft and response/operational tactics. Really puts you into the mindset of an operational agent with this kind of burden and assignment.

*Very good read for anyone interested in the Turk aspect of FFVII .. just FYI. And the author is an absolute polite gentleman on Insta.

inspiration : I don't really know. I have a terrible habit of picking up muses which are overlooked by their own creators/developers and I fucking adore them. I loved Kunsel the first time I saw him back when I was 14 (many moons ago) and he had no voice and just him with his helmet, then fell back in love with him the millisecond that security trooper mentioned his name in Remake. But 99% of my muses are NPCs or side-characters with very little input such as Kunsel [FFVII], Shotgun[female Turk] FFVII, Dave Auburnbrie [FFXV], Petra Fortis [FFXV], Nyx's mam [FFXV], Carmina Rye [FC5], Eli Palmer [FC5] and a few others - anyone want to interact, just holler at me!!!!!!

i like to joke that i have a hundred plus or minus a few dozen, depending, but no. i do not. also jokes aside i do not consider my students my actual children, but i do tend to refer to them as "my kids" lol

4. what sports do you play/have you played?

i did competitive lifesaving which is my favourite fun fact to pull out because most people don't believe it's a thing but it very much is (and it's a lot of fun!). otherwise i did just regular competitive swimming for many years as well and it's the only sport i still keep up with casually (or try to, anyway). i'm trying to earn back my gym bro status too lmao

5. do you use sarcasm?

honestly not as much as i used to? but i'm a psychologist-diagnosed cynic so it comes with the territory i guess

i went on to become an english language arts teacher, so yeah. but physics and chemistry in high school were probably the classes that were actually the most interesting to me

15. dream job?

i'm living it!! i always wanted to be a teacher, except for a few brief periods of my life when i doubted the reasons behind my career choices, etc. but generally speaking, the work i do makes me very happy and other people have told me they can tell from the way i talk about it, which is nice :) just need to hope that i can actually find a good contract for next year so i don't stay stuck in the sub vortex forever lol

2. When was the last time you cried? Well I laughed to the point of tears about 2 hours ago… other than that… I legitimately Do Not Know. I don’t cry a whole bunch. Just kinda tend to explode when it all gets to be too much 🙃

3. Do you have kids? I don’t have any of my own lol, not yet, but I nanny an adorable one-year-old and a slightly cantankerous three-year-old.

5. What sports do you play/have you played? Ballet when I was 3. Other than that nothing 😂

6. What’s the first thing you notice about people? Honestly it changes from person to person. The Chicken Express employee? Their pink & black hair. A manchild in front of me at Walmart? I was definitely channeling my inner Winter Soldier/Black Widow. 😂 and I can make a mean steak! Honestly I cook a FEAST for my family (6 of us) every time I make steak lol. I do potatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, spinach, and cherry tomatoes too. (The garlic, spinach & cherry tomatoes are thrown into the pan I used for the steaks. It’s heavenly.)

10. Where were you born? Texas, born ‘n’ raised, y’all! I don’t have a southern accent. I started saying ‘y’all’ ironically and I regret it because it’s now part of my daily speech. Actually my family is from Spain and Argentina, with quite a bit of Italian mixed in. I don’t know what that means, accent-wise, but three years ago the Walmart pharmacist complimented my pronunciation and I will never forget that.

11. What are your hobbies? Cooking, reading, writing, playing music, crocheting, sewing… essentially any form of art that you won’t find in a museum 😅 I’m no good at any of that. I also like dancing, though I don’t do it enough to call it a hobby, I think.

His name is Gus ❤️ (technically he’s my sister’s but we’re ignoring that since we all live in the same house.) technically she also has a fish and 2 Guinea pigs but Gus is mostly all of ours.

Ten days ago or around that time, I really don't want to remember exactly, because it was awful (but you helped me through it, bro, god bless). The world bad!! Uni bad!!

The serious answer is that my talent is being bilingual and annoying about it. I love writing of almost all kinds, even if I have trouble committing to big stories, I just love words and language and I think it gives me power :)

I am named after someone from one of my moms favorite Bible stories.

2. when was the last time you cried?

I couldn’t even begin to remember i’m not much of a crier, my best friend has only seen me cry once because whenever i am with others it becomes physically impossible for me to cry. but probably a few weeks ago on my drive home from college - i get sentimental in the car ok

3. do you have any kids?

Nope! I am 20 years young, single as a pringle, with no kids.

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

Yes! but usually only with closer friends and family because i don’t wanna risk making someone upset if i don’t know them very well.

5. what sports do you/have you played?

I was in a variety of different dance classes - contemporary, ballet, tap and jazz - i was on a swim team for a few years, i also did gymnastics and volleyball and now i am on an equestrian team at my college!

5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

I think the first thing I notice about someone is the way they make me feel, i’ve been told i have good intuition and can normally pick up a vibe off someone pretty quickly.

i have dark brown eyes which i get from my dad meanwhile my mom and sisters all have blue eyes

7. scary movies or happy endings?

i love a good scary movie every once in awhile but i’m a sucker for happy endings so probably happy endings!

not sure this counts as a talent but a fun fact is that i’ve never burped… it’s weird but true

i was born in Chicago but moved away when i was around 2

2. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED? Last night LOL, I got a Very Kind letter in the mail from someone I love very deeply, and I had just had a long and stressful day.

3. DO YOU HAVE KIDS? I always go "no, im not a person that counts pets as kids so i dont" but you know what. With Dai working her way through her FIFTH medical emergency of the year right now, im gonna say Yes. One. costs abt the damn same at this point at least lol

5. WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED? As a kid I played Basketball, Baseball, Soccer [Defence and Goalie depending on the years] , and lacrosse. Soccer was my favorite I loved both positions and liked the coaches too, lacrosse I quit after a month because I was told the girl's team wasn't allowed to play full contact but the boys was and 12yr old me went full fucking protest mode. [which admittedly pissed the city off a bit because I was there on fully paid funding through a like "get poor kids off the streets" initiative fkladjslkgadsgl but-] My dad also tried to spend a summer teaching my brother and I to play tennis at the local rec center so he'd have someone to play with but I hated that too LOL

6. WHAT'S THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT SOMEONE? Visually its usually just, whatever's the brightest color [be that like, hair, clothes, tattoos etc] but physically im def always watching for like, "what is their level of physical comfort right now" so i can overthink it and navigate the conversation with that in mind trying to hit all the right dialogue choices for their mood like a crazy person [*Points* GAD/ADHD] /lh

Bestie @oonajaeadira didn't tag me in this but I'm gonna do it anyway just to spite her.

1. are you named after anyone?

No and I'm a bit salty about that. I have two brothers and they both have family names. My name was picked at random and my middle name was originally going to be my first name until my mother heard a terrible nickname for it at the grocery store. I am so thankful for that because I HATE my middle name and don't use it unless legally required.

2. when was the last time you cried?

Last night! It was just a few tears, but I just started watching Euphoria and have been cruising through it and watched Season 2 episode 5, "Stand Still Like the Hummingbird," which was gut-wrenching and also one of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen.

3. do you have kids?

Nope and that's not going to happen. For the longest time I didn't want kids and then I went through a few years where I did, and now I'm just happy being the weird aunt to kids who aren't even related to me.

4. do you use sarcasm a lot?

I try not to. The majority of the time it comes off as cruel to me.

5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?

Weirdly, their hair. It's weird because I know nothing about hair or hairstyles but maybe my eyes just start with the top of the head when I meet someone. But I find myself thinking a lot, "wow, they have cool hair!"

6. what’s your eye colour?

Yellow ring around the pupil, blue ring around the outside, green in the middle. I do love them even though an optometrist once asked me what I say my eye color is and I said, "hazel?" uncertainly and they replied, completely deadpan, "That's a made-up color." So I just say "green."

Also fun fact: my dad and I have the exact same weird eye color AND are the only two in my immediate family who are near sighted.

7. scary movies or happy endings?

scary! sometimes I need a good happy ending, but a lot of the time I get mad when I feel like it's not earned.

8. any special talents?

I'm a really fast learner of anything I'm interested in. Also very good at teaching myself new skills.

9. where were you born?

a stupid town in Minnesota. but now I live in an awesome city in Minnesota and never go back there.

10: what are your hobbies?

Reading, writing, video games, puzzles, knitting, gardening, house projects, and hiking. I just want to be an old timey spinster.

11. have you any pets?

I have the best pets! My two black cats who are twin boys (from the same litter). They're sweet and snuggly and sometimes are assholes and are very entertaining. They totally make my life better and the three of us are super bonded.

12: what sports do you play/have you played?

Growing up my dad and older brother were really into sports and I tried to follow suit but was terrible at everything I tried. I did softball, basketball, tennis, and golf. My other problem was I just didn't care about winning or not and everyone else did, which I thought was dumb. I just wanted to have fun.

Thankfully I also did music and theatre and thrived in those. When I was older I trained in martial arts for ten years, which was the first time I realized all the things my body could do because I wasn't competing, just learning. I also do open water swimming in the summers, just because I really like to swim.

13: how tall are you?

5′9″

14. favourite subject in school?

"Language Arts" (English) was always my favorite, as well as orchestra, theatre, and art.

15. dream job?

I want to be retired and travel a lot. Seriously. If I had the choice, I would not work. Or maybe run a B&B in Costa Rica.

speaking of big finish... if you're a who fan who hasn't tried to expended universe, i cannot recommend the 8th doctor audios enough. he is FANTASTIC and actually one of my favourite doctors. paul mcgann is INCREDIBLE in the role and it's criminal we only have the movie and that tiny one-shot for the 50th anniversary.

A non-OP fan’s (slashy/romantic)take on Buggy and Shanks’ relationship

Disclaimer: I’m not a One Piece fan by any stretch so I don’t follow the manga or anime but I’ve seen clips of it here and there on the internet, and got intrigued by the one and only Buggy and his relationship with Shanks. I’ve been thinking a lot about them recently and reading a lot of fics/reddit theories so here’s my take. I’ll most definitely miss stuff so actual fans please jump in and correct me/add things!

Warning: My interpretation is that there is some romantic undertones to their relationship. If you don’t agree with this please don’t read! Thanks :D

1. Shanks and Buggy grew up together on the same ship. Some have suggested that they were only 1 when they were picked up by Roger’s crew, although the youngest we’ve seen them tgt was when they were 9 years old. Regardless, they probably didn’t have much of a chance to form long lasting friendships with other children outside the ship, so their peer group consisted only of each other, and that’s crazy. 

2. I feel like these circumstances would’ve led to a form of closeness that supersedes modern friendship. Some have described their bond as a brotherhood, and many have stated that they love each other.

3. However, I feel like brotherly love doesn’t fully explain their dynamic(in the anime version of their Marineford reunion). While it explains why Shanks took care of Buggy when on the Oro Jackson despite their squabbles, why he invited Buggy to go with him after Roger’s execution, and why he seemed quite happy to see Buggy at Marineford aged 39, it doesn’t quite explain why his first instinct there was to make a fool of Buggy, only to brush it off as a whim afterwards. And it most certainly doesn’t explain the most SUS thing about that interaction, which was Shanks’ facial expression and tone of voice. There’s just something very sus about that in particular because it doesn’t feel brotherly, but more like flirtatious teasing??? which Buggy is totally confused by btw.

4. I watched the Japanese version of their reunion. During most of it one of Shanks’ eyebrows was slightly raised in a sort of mischievous way, and just before he walks off he says ‘I know, so don’t be angry.’ in a tone that’s borderline flirtatious???? Does Shanks know that he can placate Buggy with flirtatious teasing?? In that case I wouldn’t call this brotherly love anymore. Does that mean he’s done that in the past and it’s worked???????

5. Perhaps these are artistic liberties that the animators and voice actors have taken, but I assume this is also approved by Oda? Maybe this is a trap for yaoi fangirls and I’ve fallen into it lmao I am not sure how this works - someone more well versed in the mechanics of this please chip in :D In any case, we’ll see where this takes us:

6. There’s 2 things to address here: the trickery, and the borderline playful flirting that happened towards the end. Firstly, the trickery: there’s a power dynamic here and Shanks is the one on top. He’s thinking about how to stop the war, Luffy, and probably other bigger things. When he sees Buggy he probably felt a lot of things then but because of the circumstance, he decides to use him as a way to get something done. 

7. It was a funny interaction, and I’m going to over-analyse it. When Buggy refused to help Shanks with the strawhat, it’s interesting that the latter decided to trick him with the false promise of a treasure map, rather than to just say sth along the lines of ‘why not help for old times’ sake’ etc. Perhaps he thinks that Buggy would be too prideful to be swayed by those types of arguments. But perhaps this is where Shanks miscalculated, and why Buggy was so offended lol just a while ago Buggy had helped Luffy because he had been touched by his innocence and resemblance to young Shanks, and here Shanks is basically saying that even after all these years he still thinks Buggy is below matters of the heart. 

8. Shanks probably also thinks he can trick Buggy into doing things for him without incurring any real consequence. It’s almost like the ‘I’m just going to say this first and then deal with his reaction later’ type mentality. Let’s face it, what can Buggy do? Fighting is out of the question: the disparity in their power levels seems too large for this to be a concern for Shanks, and Buggy is highly averse to fighting battles that he knows he can’t win. Cutting ties? Well, that’s been done: Buggy rejected Shanks’ offer to join his crew years ago, and they haven’t really met since, so the worst has already happened. Shanks has had years to get over that.

9. Perhaps over time Shanks has become more focused than his easy smiles let on. Ironically, Buggy was the one to criticise Shanks for being soft hearted when they were younger, but ultimately it is Buggy who tears up at the sight of Luffy’s innocence and decides to fight alongside him in Impel Down, and it is him that calls out Shanks’ name in the middle of the battlefield, seemingly without a care for their surroundings or consequences, just to be taken advantage of by the other.

10. Some may say I’m making Shanks sound a bit evil, and that perhaps all of this happened subconsciously. Maybe the sentiment behind tricking Buggy is half a funny way to greet his old comrade, and half a sign that he still remembers a lot about him and on top of that trusts him with his hat.

11. While I agree with the fact that Shanks basically does not have any true malice towards Buggy, I can’t ignore the power dynamic between them. The trickery was funny only to Shanks, not to Buggy, but I think this dynamic fits perfectly with Shanks’ role as the Emperor and Buggy’s as the Clown.  

12. Alas, Emperors maintain an indestructible reputation, and Clowns make themselves look bad for laughs. So mb Buggy is just fulfilling that role for Shanks in the story. After all, Shanks is portrayed as a flawless man: he is selfless, ambitious, righteous, protects the weak, stops wars and has never lost a battle in his life. On the other hand, Buggy is portrayed in the complete opposite manner: he is self-serving, duplicitous, scummy, money-loving and lazy. 

13. It’s kind of sad that Buggy was basically born into(afaik his nose is natural) this role though and is forced to make the most out of it.

Secondly, the playful flirtatiousness(I keep using this word because I feel like that’s the vibe he gave off at the end of one of the clips I saw lmao): Shanks is not really treating Buggy as an adult in his own right, but acts as if Buggy is a child(or capricious lover??) that has to be coaxed into doing the right thing. That’s also borderline disrespectful, but it could just be a matter of them having been apart for such a long time that Shanks automatically defaulted to their old, childish ways because he hadn’t really had the chance to get to know Buggy as an adult.

15. But then this begs the question of what exactly is the nature of their relationship? Brotherly love doesn’t fit with the flirting, so perhaps it’s a different kind of love? Some possible reasons for why Shanks would ever be flirtatious could be 1. there’s some romantic elements to their relationship in the past that he’s taking advantage of now e.g. maybe Buggy was attracted to him and he is taking advantage of it? or 2. it’s a new thing he’s trying because he thinks it’s funny and Buggy would be too confused to keep retorting so it’s a fun way to end the conversation and at the same time to plant a seed in the clown that might make him follow Shanks later? (Buggy did immediately think about doing that lololol) Is this Shanks’ way of getting Buggy to come back to him lmao without explicitly asking loooool 

16. Judging by Buggy’s reaction it seems like number 2 is more likely but this is all anime-only afaik

All in all, I feel like Buggy is a special person to Shanks and vice versa, and even though Buggy is just one element of a much bigger picture for Shanks (whereas for Buggy, Shanks seems to have a much bigger presence in his mind), the fact that they spent their childhood only having each other as peers enabled them to form a deep mutual trust and closeness that didn’t seem to have dampened after twenty odd years of separation.
