One of the funniest parts of mdzs is that even though Wei Wuxian was literally dead, Lan Qiren STILL decided it was necessary to add an official rule about not associating with him
Wei Wuxian was THAT much of an annoyance to him.
He literally carved it into a wall!! IMAGINE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL being like “no. leave this school and also nobody I know can ever talk to you again.” It’s so petty.
AND THEN HIS OWN NEPHEW went and married him and brought him back to live there again!!!!!!!!
I’ll never get over how funny this is

(1/6) Hi, I'm not the anon who talked about LQR rule to avoid WWX, but I agree. He’s being petty, sure, but my heart breaks for wwx for being sic out and isolated from his family-in-law. These things cut deep, and while wwx is used to abuse from supposed-families, it leaves a horrible taste reading it. Just because no one follows it doesn’t mean it don’t exist, and honestly?
(2/6) If that rule is on the stone and everytime wwx comes back from outside he has to see it, I just want he to get some self-respect and take lwj with him away. Sure, he wouldn’t cause it’s lwj home and he’s used to being treated like less-important than others, but that’s a form of abuse to intentionally isolate someone from their supposed-family. Like what the hell? How can lwj ignore such an attack?
(3/6) Also, you mentioned that they can’t just ignore the heir apparent’s husband. They could and did ignore his mother, while taking her children away and imprisoned her till she died. I doubt someone who killed a respected teacher of the Lan sect to be so weak as to die young naturally, so presumably her mental state would be likely the cause of her death. This is not canon, but I see a similarity in attitude here.
Isolation till one dies of mental pain and loneliness is much crueler than just a sword in their hearts. While her imprisoning might be just (no canon info), taking away her children feels not only wrong, but…immoral, especially to the children. Honestly I’m surprised they don’t one day think back about all the time they wasted while their mother was alive, and not growing to resent/ rejected the Lans. If I was lwj, I would be extremely wary to take wwx back to CR, especially after such rule was
(5/6) was made in fear of a repeat of what happened to his mother. Yes, their mother may have committed a crime, and suffer the consequence. But, given the unclear of legalities in-universe (no central laws, it’s about “which sect you go against that’s powerful enough to demand revenge” rather than “do something wrong/illegal”), who knows what could happen that turns them against wwx like they did before?
(6/6) So ugh, yeah, I know in the other extras he seemed to be accepted into the family (banquet and teacher-like position in iron hook), but I’m still bitter about that part. Of course the Lans is not perfect and has their issues which is totally fine, I just want wwx to be happy :( Sorry for the long ask btw, I just have a lot of feelings on this issue ;A;
That is a good point. Personally the way I’ve always seen that rule given everyone’s reaction to it is less “this is a serious attempt to isolate WWX” and more “this is LQR being Exceptionally Petty and WWX and LWJ will wear him down in like a week tops”, but if you see it differently that also makes sense.
My thought process is basically... the fact that it clearly doesn’t last (WWX is allowed at sect banquets and presumably given some level of authority and trust given he’s allowed to teach the juniors) combined with the fact that no one involved seems to take it seriously suggests to me that it’s generally accepted to be LQR throwing a bit of a tantrum before accepting LWJ’s marriage fully. It’s not quite the same as the situation with LWJ’s mother because she was locked up; they weren’t giving her the silent treatment, she was in prison. How just that was is debatable, but I’d say they’re two very different situations. Honestly I get the impression that we’re supposed to see the rule against speaking with WWX as a joke; I mean, come on, “give Hanguang-jun’s husband the silent treatment”? This is a rule set by an actual person with authority in the Lan sect? It’s just so ridiculous and petty I find it almost impossible to take seriously. This is schoolyard stuff.
Also... if LWJ was genuinely concerned about how the Lans were going to treat WWX, he wouldn’t have settled in the Cloud Recesses with him. The last thing he wants is for his husband to feel isolated. LWJ has blind spots, but having seen his sect turn against WWX (which I do feel the need to point out the Lans had very good reason for doing, assuming for whatever reason they didn’t hear or didn’t believe LWJ’s version of events, which would be at least semi-reasonable given it was two sect leaders’ word against LWJ’s when at least part of the sect knows LWJ is in love with WWX; they only knew what they had been told by two presumed-trustworthy sources, that WWX was a traitor and a threat to the sects who was building an army) in the past would lead him to be very cautious about such things in the future. I imagine he would have at least discussed the matter with WWX (and probably his uncle, too), and they clearly decided to stay.
