This movie is everything to me

I was thinking about the parallels between the two times in CATWS where Steve takes off his helmet when facing an opponent, and I found them interesting.

First he feels like he needs to prove something to Batroc, the pirate he's been ordered to apprehend. At his goading, he puts away his shield and takes his helmet off 🤦

I feel like he does this out of a misplaced sense of pride, or fairness, or cockiness? Dude took a bunch of SHIELD personnel hostage and Steve agrees to play his game/indulge him. "I thought you were more than just a shield," Batroc says, so Steve puts away his shield and helmet to face him not as Captain America, but as Steve Rogers. To prove him right-- that Steve was more than a symbol, a lackey of his masters, and he didn’t need the shield to win. Which was, in my humble opinion, unnecessary in regards to finishing the mission, and also put him in danger.

Or maybe he did it partly to stick a middle finger up at SHIELD itself? The organization he joined to help people but didn’t tell him anything important and treated him like an asset instead of a person? On the books, he’s Captain America, but ultimately he will do things Steve Rogers’ way. And Batroc literally asked to meet Steve Rogers, so here he is!

And then... he does the same thing with Bucky. He takes his helmet off and flings his shield away without a second thought-- but without Bucky having to ask. Kind of like the opposite of when he faced Batroc, who asked to meet the man behind the symbol, Steve takes his mask off without prompting because he desperately needs Bucky to see his real self.

He wore his old Captain America uniform in the hopes that it would jog Bucky's memory. But it was only after he tossed the symbols aside-- the helmet and the shield-- and faced (or rather, surrendered to) Bucky with open arms as Steve Rogers, that Bucky truly recognized him, Steve won, and Hydra lost.

It was Steve Rogers who was bloody and beaten all to hell with multiple bullet wounds and still repeating Bucky's words of devotion back to him. It was Steve Rogers who Bucky swore to follow into the jaws of death, not Captain America. And it was Steve Rogers who Bucky dove after and saved from the river, even when the Winter Soldier barely remembered him.

Both times Steve took off his helmet and put away his shield to fight an opponent, he won. The first time was unnecessary-- he could have beaten Batroc as Captain America-- but it was important to him personally that he faced him as Steve.

With the Winter Soldier though, I don't think Steve would have won and gotten through to Bucky had he not thrown the trappings of Captain America aside. Sure, maybe he could have captured or knocked Bucky out had he been willing to hurt him, but he wasn't. As soon as his main mission was over (saving 750k people), his personal quest to get Bucky to remember him took precedence. It was a goal Steve Rogers would have died for, and he nearly did. (A good thing that his best friend was still there, and that Bucky waded in and pulled Steve out of trouble like he always did.)

I guess what I found interesting was, the first time Steve took his helmet off and put aside his shield, it was for pride. The second time, it was for love.

If you are going to fight a war, you wear a uniform

I never really used to consider the meaning behind this line. It seems a line to transition the movie to the next scene, and to put steve in a uniform again instead of a jacket and khakis. Besides, the meaning of wearing his old uniform in the final fight is well-studied.

HOWEVER, it just came to me:

under international law, soldiers has to wear uniforms to a) distinguish themselves from civilians and b) signify their affiliation. It's a war crime to dress in disguise (civilian clothing or the enemy's uniform) for soldiers.

so it is not just a perfunctory line, it's entirely in character not only in the sense that steve cares about rules and/or symbolism, but also in the sense that steve is very conscious of his role as a soldier.

people talk about how the mall scene showcases the difference between a spy and a soldier. this line is too. because while sam and steve were dressed up in their respective uniforms, natasha was literally wearing another face.

the soldier/spy dichotomy is the root of steve's conflict with SHIELD. the movie did not force the audience to choose because both ways were proven indispensable for the win, what it did was to make clear that loyalty without honesty could be dangerous (pierce&fury, nat&shildra), the two qualities steve champions precisely because of his identity as a soldier. steve reinforcing his identity with this scene paves the way for his speech to SHIELD agents and also shows how uncompromising and self-assured (read: stubborn) he is and I love that about him.

half the movie is about steve trying to adjust to the modern world, including working for SHIELD, with spies like nat and fury (he learned to be stealth), and find his identity again. he's found it with sam's help - he realized he couldn't and shouldn't change himself. him embracing that is one part of his journey in CAWS fulfilled (another part was finding a home and he also had that with bucky lmao).

now, I should point out that steve isn't a soldier because he is never one to follow orders but that deserves its own post. I do like to say that much like the name 'Captain America', regular people tend to categorize/simplify steve as one thing, a soldier, propaganda, personification of American hegemon, good ol' American way of life from the 40s. but these are tangentially correct at best and, dangerously false at worst.

I would like to see the Jewish headcanons please

Hi yes thank you so much I wasn't fishing for this at all

We've already covered this in that post that gained me 150 followers in a week, but obviously Peter Parker is Jewish. My personal headcanon is that he's Ashkenazi and somewhere between Reform and Conservative. Like he flip flops on keeping Kosher and observes the high holidays as best as he can assuming there's no world saving he needs to get done, but overall being Jewish to him is about community and culture over the religious part of it

For Bucky Barnes, however, being observant was a way to reclaim his identity after... Well, you know. He's vaguely conservadox? He doesn't really define it beyond being Sephardic. He keeps Kosher (which was difficult during WWII unfortunately) and wears tzitzit and goes to shul whenever he can. He'd love to keep Shabbat but it's just not practical most of the time - essentially it's like being an on call doctor, where your job is essential to saving lives and therefore he can't keep Shabbat properly, but he likes to have Friday night dinners with his friends (and Natasha, whether they're together at the time or not) whenever he can. He doesn't know if God exists, but during the High Holidays is when he comes the closest to believing it

Bruce Wayne is canonically Jewish but like, by accident? I feel like he less defines himself as Jewish and more defines himself as Not-Christian™. His mother used to take him to Synagogue but the memories are vague now, but he always enjoyed lighting the candles on Hanukkah, especially with Jason. He stops celebrating the holiday after Jason dies, because he loved it so much. It's a shame because I KNOW Cass would love Hanukkah and Steph would be so into the Maccabees' story

Tim is also Jewish but he's entirely non practicing; his parents were never around to celebrate any holidays or impart any Jewish traditions on him and Bruce had stopped doing the one Jewish thing of lighting the hanukkiah/menorah (whichever you wanna call it) by the time he became Robin. The main Jewish thing in his life is antisemitic garbage being published about both Bruce and himself, especially once he becomes CEO of WE

Damian was raised Muslim and doesn't really know how to feel about being half Jewish. When he grows up he might try to find a way to reconcile those two parts of his identity, but the only Jewish person who actually practices that he sees even irregularly is Batwoman, who's his cousin once removed and he's not exactly close to, so he just doesn't feel the need to deal with it yet

The Thing and Batwoman are canonically Jewish this doesn't count as a hc I just love them

Same for moon knight minus loving him cause I have a bunch of his comics but just haven't gotten around to reading them

Actually can we talk about Mayday Parker? Because I feel like Peter would absolutely raise his daughter to be Jewish. He wants her to feel that connection to the Jewish people even though he's always been so wishy-washy about it and she grows up to be way more observant than him

I actually don't want canon!Clark to be Jewish, but I think exploring his Jewish subtext in fic can be so interesting? Cause, you know, he's Moses and shit. I feel like an Modern Orthodox Clark would have the exact same values as current Clark but also I'd love to hear his thoughts on certain Mishnahs, you know? Also having read the Death of Superman arc earlier this month I can confirm all Jesus metaphors in adaptations are such bullshit oh my God did you even read the comic

Anyway I think that's it for now? Unfortunately I have not read Every Comic Ever yet so there might end up being even more HCs later on (especially since I plan to read Greg Rucka's Lois Lane series soon and I'm hoping for some Jewish subtext in that)

with the flowers that they have around their garden, would they have marigolds and calendula since those are good for repelling insects (calendula petals are also edible and used for making cosmetics), would they also have some sage since burning it repels mosquitoes?

Also for their tea garden I feel like they'd have chamomile, lavender, and maybe some mints. I also feel like they'd have a lemon tree bc you can use lemons for a lot of things. Maybe they'd grow pumpkins too, like the type for eating/making pie. I feel like Bucky would probably have some vintage recipes for various pies including pumpkin.

Also with Steve's art, how do you feel about the idea of him making his own paints and making taking some of the flower petals from the garden and drying them and grinding them to make pigments to make more organic paint colors. Also I feel like they'd have a fireplace and/or outdoor fire pit, if Steve uses charcoal for drawing maybe he could make charcoal sticks/pencils from the burnt wood in the fireplace instead of buying more expensive/fancy charcoal for his art.

Also how many indoor/house plants do they have and which one of them would be the plant dad. Do they have any bird feeders in front of the windows for Alpine to look at?

Steve is Obsessed™ with charcoal sketching cus he use to do that all the time before the war and he fucking loves leaving charcoal marks all over Bucky *cough*activities*cough*

Steve using flowers to make different colors and experiencing all the different things he can do with it and the never ending possibilities is just afshaajsvs. Imagine curious lil Steve finding out he can make his own paints and doing all the research he possibly can and after SEVERAL failed attempts ending in adorable pouts that Bucky was more than happy to kiss away, he finally finally got it right and now has a whole pallette of organic paints which he made himself????? And he is so fucking proud of himself?????

And the pumpkin and lemon tree!!! Growing up my grandparents had 2 lemon trees in their front yard and i have so many good memories with lemon trees and like ohhhhh all the goddamn lemonade that Steve would make, he is BIG on using everything from his garden and making minimal trips to the grocery store. Bucky is just happy he doesn't have to leave the house much often and gets to spend more time in his garden. All the pies they made with the pumpkins they grew and and all the gallons of lemonade they made.

They would have those big transperant dispensers which are constantly in use and full of different stuff either one of them made that day

And their house smelling like sage is such a soft feeling oh my 🥹🥹 obvs they had to be careful with certain plants to not trigger any bad memories for Bucky and stuff but yesss they grow lavender which I think is Steve's favourite (because it's my favourite i think I'm projecting lmao) cus like you look at Steve and you just KNOW he smell something flowery and it's most prolly lavender and they have all the flowers growing right in front of their main entrance like thiis

Their kitchen have a back door that leads to their herbs and tea garden cus that's the sensible thing lmao and the kitchen is always smelling nice even when they r not cooking/baking something.

Over all the big picture is Bucky and Steve sitting in their kitchen, Steve still has some paint splatters on his hands, they are drinking thier tea with mint and lemon, the house smells like sage while alpine is sitting on the picturesque window sill watching the birds near the bird feeder that steve put up himself, there is pie in the oven which Bucky made and Steve would like to say that he helped a bit but he was just snuggling and distracting his husband, thus the reason Bucky ALSO have paint on his neck and hands and everything is peaceful and birds chirping and all that Disney bullshit im going to go cry happy tears for my boys now thank you ✌️

So...I got a new electric kettle. There was a mind boggling array of choices online but my eyes immediately zoomed on to this one. However, now that it's out of the box, I'm fully realizing that I basically bought a Bucky Vibranium Arm Kettle.

I'm a little miffed by the way that people in the fandom tend to be all "Oh poor Bucky" about STEVES disabilities?? As if it's Bucky who's primarily affected by Steve being chronically ill. Not Steve himself, Bucky.

It's Bucky that people always write as the hard worker, slaving away to buy Steve his medicine and keep a roof over his head and clothes on his back, as if Steve wouldn't have most definitely had multiple jobs to provide for his Mother and be her main caretaker considering he probably wouldn't have been able to afford hospice for her? As if Steve isn't the one experiencing the pain of having chronic conditions at all, with limited resources to begin with, and having to turn to a healthcare system that most likely either not help, or wouldn't have the resources to help him, living in a time where eugenics was at it's height in America, as if he wouldn't be the one at risk of violence due to being from an irish immigrant background and chronically ill in early 1900s America?

Like, theres nothing wrong with writing Bucky as someone who wants to help provide for Steve, but like, don't act like Steve had to depend on him for EVERYTHING. Because he absolutely didn't, and saying that reeks of ableism to me. He helped Steve out when he needed it, and Steve accepted that help, but he wasn't completely dependent on Bucky to do everything for him.

It just always FUCKS with me when people take Steves autonomy or only mention Steves ailments in relation to Bucky. Idk, it just rubs me the wrong way. Please stop infantilizing pre-serum Steve.

its interesting how easy writing these characters has become for me and yet how hard it is to balance the spoken and unspoken. maybe the ease makes that balancing act even harder. similarly, in this verse, theyre in a position to just so simply have this really good thing, under the radar of the chaos, but all the stuff they maybe dont have to think about now become complicated in their absence. we're slowly unpacking how sarah feels about it all, i hope.
