digging my teeth into the really dark fascinating fucked-upness of helnik. they’re fascinating in being a wartime love story about an intentional victim of genocidal violence and an unintentional fuck-around-and-find-out victim of “collateral damage,” both of which are different forms of wartime violence.
nina is targeted as a grisha, she’s almost killed by the druskelle and fjerda in the books not for being a ravkan spy or agent but simply for being grisha. they will kill her for being grisha. and how will they kill her? they will burn her. and it’s fascinating when she tells matthias in a very justified moment of rage (i mean. they’re looking at the dying burned corpses of her people whom jesper, also a grisha, had to physically shoot) and says i want your family to burn i want them all to be burnt in the way my people were. and matthias says, they already have been. they already burned. and how that changes the entire dynamic between them, everything leading up to that, becuase FUCK. yeah. his whole family has already been burnt. he’s a lone survivor of something in much the same way she is, and his family was burnt not on purpose for being grisha but as a “justified accident,” the casual civilian side-damage of war. and it was her people. unlike the intentional, systemic violence that destroyed her people and left nina a shaken, traumatised survivor of a purposeful genocide, we have matthias as this destroyed survivor of one of those little sorts of accidents that’s swallowed and justified by the shape of the war and what Must Be Done to succeed. (also he serves as like, one of the only times i think it’s really faced that the first army is, you known, a national army that does national-army-during-a-war things.) one does not cancel out the other.
their relationship is difficult and fucked and that’s why it’s fascinating and has so much potential to explore. it’s so much more complicated than the tiktok “enemies to lovers” trope because they dig right at the base of what it is to be an enemy to someone else. from the ship nina is an almost-lone survivor of the damage his people did. from his village being burnt by inferni matthias is a lone survivor of the damage her people did. from the consequences of war on his people and violent prejudice against her own, nina is raised a child soldier and in many ways reduced to weaponry, something that absolutely is a form of child abuse. from the consequences of war on her people matthias is inducted into a cult and subjected to spiritual abuse. they’ve been hurt by each other’s nations, but also by their own. there’s something so brutal but also tender in the way they knock each other off the orbits they’ve been living in and force them out of the home that is burning. love may make you free, but not without drowning first.

Honestly i see canon akutagawa x beast atsushi as 2 emos who have gone through nothing but pain in their lives trying to heal themselves through loving each other (with a dab of toxicity)
Yeaahhhhhhh............ Yeah. I really like the concept of this ship to be honest. I think they would get along very well, because honestly sskk do get along very well the second Atsushi gets down his moral pedestal and understands he's not any better than Akutagawa; which happens automatically if Atsushi works for the mafia too. And I feel like it would help Akutagawa a lot to have someone he feels he can relate to, someone who truly understands him. It'd make him feel more human. Yeah, I sincerely think they'd work amazing together– keeping the little sad because of all the traumatic experiences they still had to go through, but still finding comfort in walking through the darkness side by side. It's a sad soft little ship.

today on: little xc3 moments i think about way too much
the scene in maktha where the gang is informed about the annihilator and the shit going on at the castle so they decide to take a detour from their route to the city to take it down. and eunie is the most reluctant to agree to this plan because she just had that conversation with mio about her lifespan and doesn’t want her to lose any more time because she finally understands her and her situation better now but she relents upon seeing how determined mio is to take action, despite being entirely aware of how long it could take.
it’s SO good. it’s reminiscent of the scene in fornis where taion and sena try to convince everyone to take the quicker but more dangerous route because they don’t want mio to waste time, putting what they think she needs over what she actually wants. which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as they want to do what they believe would be best for mio. but at the same time eunie/lanz decide on the slower, safer option without a second thought because this is so early in the story and they haven’t fully become friends with the agnus half at this point.
yet later, in maktha, focus is put on eunie’s hesitation Because she’s become friends with mio, realising the full gravity of the situation, and being confided in that mio is actually more afraid than she lets on (and eunie, too, is more than intimate with fear in the face of death). but eunie agrees to go along, anyway, because she understands that it’s what her friend wants, and that matters more than anything else

What did you think about Behlül’s relationships with Bihter and Nihal? Did he love either of them? Did either of them love him?
I think he did actually love both of them, but in his own way. He seems to have a tendency to have a great big romance that he quickly burns out and rinse and repeat with the next person he fancies.
As to whether he was loved, I'd say yes by both, but also in a limited way. I think he's kind of like the high school crush of a girl from a very small town, where the girl wants to date someone mostly because she thinks it's exciting at that age. And so her crush toward the guy develops more out of her daily life having a very limited pool of potential boyfriends, than out of any wow moment of attraction to that guy in particular.
For Bihter, I think she would have equally fallen for a different person who was young, handsome and charming, and consistently close at hand to observe.
But I don't know if she'd have slept with anyone who was not so casual as Behlül. His cheerful lack of morals and friendly persistence surely helped a bit to remove some mental barriers in her mind. With someone less happy-go-lucky, she'd maybe just have had lovesickness and stayed at that as a 'noble' kind of compromise between cheating and withering without experiencing real love.
There is a word I can't quite translate, 'prepustiti se' (to let yourself go, to abandon yourself to a feeling/situation, can be have positive or negative connotations), which I feel works for both Bihter and Nihal's feelings to Behlül.
They were first pursued by him and they seem to have almost purposefully convinced themselves into loving him. Both were lonely and desperate in different ways.
Bihter was in an unhappy marriage, I don't think I need to elaborate too much as she herself describes it all in a self-aware way in the novel.
As to Nihal, she was frankly somewhat neglected by her family. Yes, she's otherwise "spoiled", but they made huge decisions to remove her brother, and her governess, and her kitchen buddies, and didn't even tell her until the very moment it had already happened! Extremely frustrating and scary for such an already isolated girl. She lived from day to day not knowing who she could lose next, no wonder she got all emo.
So when the situation came that everyone was suddenly eager to marry her to a guy - one she already knew and trusted and casually bantered with - I think half of the appeal would be a young girl's physical attraction to Behlül as a man, but the other half would be the idea of finally keeping someone for herself (because her family couldn't very well decide to whoosh away her husband on a whim, lol). I can see why she'd accept the situation.

sorry for being a little hater about shipping again but people thinking that silvaze is canon is like peak cishets being unable to see a boy and a girl have any sort of positive interaction without automatically assuming theyre in love

The defense/reason Utena is lesbian because of her having heavy trauma related with various men is a biphobic statement and completely ignores that bi women can and do face abuse from various men in their lives as well but we aren't ready to talk bout that yet I think!

If you could turn back time, would you wanna play TWDG series for the first time again? Your blog and posts would still exist but your memory would have no prior knowledge of the game
Hell yeah, I would. This blog has 5+ years of twdg content on it and if my memory of just that was erased, it would be a lot of fun to replay the games now, then read the stuff that past CJ thought and wrote. I'm a different person than I was five years ago because that's how time works, funny enough, so I wonder how differently I would think, y'know?
Plus, on top of cringing at my very old posts, me and past CJ would disagree on some things. I mean, I have changed my mind on quite a bit but you get me.
and I dunno, I haven't posted a lot on this blog lately but outside of it and in all my fandoms, I'm very much in my "oh no I've lost most of my fucks" era where I like what I like, I dislike what I dislike, who gives a shit? So I feel like if I were to get into twdg for the first time now, I would be a lot more open with my opinions and interpretations of the series and a lot less worried about conflict in the fandom.
I would also get to experience Lee dying for the first time again, and I would get to experience tfs all over again, THAT I would especially love.

After seeing the recent II episode, I've seen ND fans discussing how Cabby is treated in the episode. I also saw Justin comment his thoughts on the discussion as well.
Part of me want to share some insight into how I rewrote a scene in my script for Rise of Relics to remove an ableist implication of Nicodemus' behavior towards Nikey (see this post here about it). There's also another scene I plan to rewrite as well that has a few ableist implications and I want to show how to improve it with research and listening to those with physical disabilities.
I'm not sure if it's alright for me to share this, as some of the II fans have similar symptoms to Cabby's memory issues, I do not want to speak over them as I do not have any memory symptoms as they do. What I do have, in reference to the scene in Rise of Relics, is anxiety and (possible) undiagnosed OCD, and Nikey is written with the implication of having both of these. The other scene I want to later rewrite is also in reference to how Nikey finds comfort in others, sometimes invasively due to having poor coping skills, and Nicodemus is often the person who helps ground her.
I think it's best for me to listen to those who are most affected by the episode before I say anything. But, one thing I say is that condemning a character's aids and accommodations they use to cope with their symptoms is wrong. Showing unhealthy coping mechanisms is okay (carefully saying this while keeping in mind my own experience coping with anxiety), but I do think this episode should have been written with more care.
To Justin and the Inanimate Insanity team, please consult sensitivity readers for your scripts in the future, please.

No matter how sad the question sounds, I think we need to mentally prepare for this. What will you do when the Owl House is over? Will there be an emptiness in your heart? Or will you be able to safely let these characters go?

How can I connect to you? Share your love even if it isn't true
Deep inside your desire's calling me, dive in and then set it free!
I want to connect, but...
Sometimes you get stuck in a surreal otherworld where you're forced to bare your soul to other people in a deep psychic connection because you're dead, and sometimes, it's because you've been turned into a kappa.
Sometimes there's singing involved.
(I love Sarazanmai so much.)
