about american literature... what do you mean when you talk about how it doesn't achieve catharsis? i'm curious; being from spain and reading like, lots of spanish or english authors (of the modern variety) besides lots and lots of manga and some japanese books lately i wonder about the difference (because at least tonaly and in the use of the words? the narrative? is easy to see) if it's a large answer, just a url or a book to start my own search would be great! sorry for bothering you
You’re not a bother at all!!
So, in part this is my opinion, so people are welcome to disagree. My experiences and personal tastes affect what I view as catharsis, and I don’t have the time for a complete essay, but I’ll do my best to explain ramble:
Catharsis is defined as the release of emotions, often repressed ones, brought about by a literary work. Aristotle coined it for use in tragedy, but it applies to all stories. It is somewhat dependent on the stakes of the story being told: Will Raskolnikov confess his crime? What happens to his family if he does? What about Romeo and Juliet? Will they ever be together? Will the feud ever end? When the story ends, hopefully or tragically, the emotions you feel are the catharsis. For me, they’re the very reason I read a story: I want to feel something.
Many probably do feel things from American lit. I just do not. Modern and postmodern literature in general struggles with adequate catharsis in a rapidly expanding world in which the stakes of everyday life are expanding as well. Plus, these are the major literary movements in the west that American novels have been around for.
Like, The Scarlet Letter has great themes and characters, but the ending doesn’t provide me with any kind of emotional release. Pearl wanders off, neither confirming nor reputing what everyone’s said about her, Hester isn’t much better–or worse–off than she was at the beginning. There’s an element of mediocrity to them, and a message about accepting the mediocrity (and I can think of a few cultural reasons why this might be). Faulker, Updike, Steinbeck, Nabokov, Vonnegut–there’s a lack of satisfaction as part of the message of mannnny of their novels, and a sense of “the world is how it is.” Choices lose their resonance, which as an existentialist, I scowl at. This is the way things are. Yay futility. For some the lack of catharsis is what they need/want from a story, because it reflects life.
That’s not what I’m reading a story for, however. I want the story to show me something, whether or not it’s realistic. I want it to have a journey myself when I read. It doesn’t have to have a clear message, either: the best stories are the ones you can still debate. But I want the journey to have meant something other than just “welp that’s it.”
I’ll also add that if you look at all those authors they tend to have the same character as the MC in almost all of their works and it is white man who seems put together on the outside but is having an existential crisis on the inside which means it may not quiiiiite resonate with someone of a different identity. Basically most protagonists in American lit are trying to be Jay Gatsby, but The Great Gatsby works because it’s a tragedy clearly brought about by not just a flawed system but also by the characters’ flaws, not because it just is. (Though again, clearly that resonates with a lot of people! But not with me.)
There are always exceptions, though. I do like Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, because it has catharsis, as does The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger. These are windows into the characters’ lives, but by the end you feel the part of the journey you took with the characters meant something. At least, I do. (and the MCs aren’t typical–a little tomboy girl and an angsty teenager who is a disaster inside and out). And I don’t get that feeling from a lot of American lit.

HI! I read like a lot of your posts about Pandora Hearts, and then your fics, and I love your perspective in the story. As I'm a fan too of Vanitas no Carte and you seem to be also following it, i'd like to know your opinions in general about the story at this moment or just about our two mains in this manga. Because your posts are very interesting *-* (And we seem to be headed towards other tragedy of bittersweet ending, omg mochizun xD)
I love you.
You made my month.
Actually I'm still way behind on VNC, partly because I'm waiting for my volumes to ship (which is taking around one eternity and a half for some reason), and partly because I want to keep this reading as casual as possible (those who know me are laughing right now. Whatever is moderate love I wonder) because I don't want to give my heart to Jun again yet (but I don't need it anyway). Although with the way I see everyone already freaking out (I get a healthy amount of this each month on my dash haha), I'm wondering if the only way to surprise readers isn't to make things happy for once? xD Not that I believe it one second but you know, plot twists happen xD (I'm still a summer child, I've only seen some blood and some fangs and some gorgeous people I refuse to get attached to). Though, you can expect a lot of freaking out from me once I'm caught up because that's just who I am as a person; sorry for not being able to provide a better answer at this time

alnair-tair replied to your post: GDC Dads, Worst to Best
LOL How sad it is that the best ones are the villain of 13 years ago and the one who died while his son was an infant? Like, author, what are you trying to say to us with that? XD
Hey, it might be that Jin Zixuan dads them out of the park! So then the best dad could be the one who died while his son wasn’t even an infant...
Then again, the rest of them aren’t exactly alive any more, either. The best living dad is probably not-even-a-dad Lan Qiren, who did all the active dad-ing for his nephews.

it is called dynamic meditation!! it's a thing that exits, so yeah, Wei Wuxian could totally used those methods
i knew that it was a thing from books i read on meditation 20 years ago, but now i have a name for it in english :)

gold that's what this is xD and of course or main couple was destined to be together like that of course... (if only my own characters would have the decency to speak about their feelings too XD)
even Lan Xichen realized ages ago! ok, he probably didn’t know know but he was the only one who realized Lan Wangji was fond of or interested in this wild kid even if he claimed not to be.

alnair-tair replied to your post “Mo XuanYu (Wei’s body) age”
the thing is... is mo xuanyu body older that the one of wei wuxian when this died? because if then, wow depressing food for thought
I think Wei’s age is easier to figure out through flashbacks, but I’d have to reread to remember, and we didn’t reach his death yet in the TL so I don’t know. But I think he mustn't have been much older than Mo, which is sad, I agree.

Alrighty Here We Go Again!
Sooo... @alnair-tair asked me my thoughts about the post I made with Hiyori wanting to be Yato’s shinki now after Chapter 90 (Link to that post here)
AND LET ME TELL YOU FAM. IT AINT GOOD. AM TERRIFIED. THANK YOU FOR ASKING.
*ahem* Anyway, let’s get this out there...under the cut cause this is gonna get long.
I’m sure Hiyori still 100% wants to become Yato’s shinki at some point or another. And like with the issues I stated in the other post, they would still stand. But now it’s even more complicated.
Hiyori doesn’t care if she dies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As mentioned, her condition hasn’t gotten better even with the medical care.
Makes me wonder if she feels that she is going to die and wants to keep going until the very end. To save Yukine, to see Yato again, and if she dies, then maybe...maybe she can become his shinki after all. So she doesn’t care if she dies, because in the end she’ll be with them.
But that’s still the problem. In order for a spirit to be able to become a shinki, they have to have wanted to still live. If she doesn’t care if she dies, she might not be able to become a shinki. (Though like TD said Yato could use the Koto-no-ha to name her because her soul is corrupted, but again that isn’t the best course of action...at least I don’t think.)
And don’t even get me started on this panel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s giving me hella Sakura vibes and I’m scared.
I don’t know if it’s the way her hair is, if it’s the perspective, whatever it is it’s giving me uneasy-hey-it’s-gonna-be-sakura-all-over-again-vibes.
Now let’s do a thing real quick. If Hiyori dies, and Yukine cannot be saved, who does Yato have? That’s right. No one. They are his family. His definition of home. If he loses them...and god forbid in the same day, our poor God is gonna be a wreck. More so than he already is.
Getting back to Hiyori, this time she feinted seems a lot different than the previous times...
Tumblr media
Unlike other times, she isn’t able to separate from her body. That alone is enough for concern, because of the fact her cord/tail was damaged back in chapter 81.2
Tumblr media
The damage to her cord is probably slowly killing her...The blight from the phantom wolves is spreading through her soul...which is now trapped in her body. (so yeah that’s not good...)
So...in the long run, yeah I think Hiyori is going to die...
Now I don’t like to put the blame solely on a single character because that’s never right....However.
Tumblr media
Let’s not forget this happened....and...we know that does not bode well.
So yeah. Kofuku, girl, I love you, but for fucks sake. I’ll be making another post on this in the near future.
Let’s go into theory/speculation/fanfic territory here for a second.
Imagine that Hiyori does die... Her spirit wanders until it finds Yato. She doesn’t recognize him, but he absolutely recognizes her. Struck with the realization that she has died, and now has to decide on taking her in or allowing her to become phantom food. He takes her, because what other choice does he really have. Reluctantly names her, sees the events leading to her death, seeing every memory of each other together...And then? Then what?
He’d cry. Her final wish has come true, but at the cost of everything else. She wouldn’t know him, she would have no recollection of the times they spent together, the unrequited but mutual feelings they shared...all of it gone as if it never existed in the first place. At least for her. Yato would still have every memory, every feeling...But wouldn’t ever be able to do anything about them. He’d never be able to call out her name again. [Assuming we save him...] Yukine would be upset over the fact Yato took in another shinki, then knowing it’s Hiyori would also be distraught. He wouldn’t be able to call her name either. If either of them did, despair and disaster would befall them. Even Kofuko and Daikoku. Anyone with connections to her when she was alive are a major risk to her. Unexpectedly it could happen. One little slip up from someone calling out her name, could spark memories and confusion. And just like that... It would be like what happened with Sakura so many years ago. Yato, left with no choices but to either let himself be killed by phantom Hiyori or to use Yukine to kill her. Neither of which are preferred outcomes... Which would he choose?
...So which do you think he would choose? His own death or the death of the phantom?
If he chooses his own death, that’s also choosing the death of other around him, i.e Yukine, Kofuku, Daikoku, whoever would be around them at the time it happens. The plus for him choosing death would be he wouldn’t have to deal with the suffering and grief of letting this happen for a second time. It’s extremely selfish of him, so I don’t see him doing that. But the other option ends in a lot of suffering...
If he chooses to kill phantom Hiyori, it would be safer for everyone. But then everyone is left with the memory of Hiyori and the things they witnessed happen. Yato and Yukine both would be scared for having to kill her. I think they both would want prolonged alone time to deal with their loss...Yato would be filled with regret and grief. A second time he’s lost a shinki to the GGS...And there was nothing he could do to stop it. And this time it was someone very close to him....
I got way off track of the original post I think but yeah, I had an idea and I ran with it.

I was tagged by @alnair-tair; thanks! ^^
I technically did this before, but this is a good chance to go into a little more detail.
S ranked stuff is excellent. Will definitely have to check it out (although that of course depends on what the other tags are).
A ranked is also pretty good. Both S and A have a good chance of being featured in my own writing.
B is fine; I’m going to read it. Depending on how the tropes are handled, it could be some of the best stuff. ^^
C depends on how it’s written, but I’ll give it a chance. Once again, if it’s done well, some of the best stuff.
D is still stuff I’ll probably read to be completely honest. I don’t really have a lot of big “absolutely no way” stuff in fanfic because a lot of whether something is good or not depends heavily on how the author portrays it. Still, this section is stuff I’m not super enthusiastic about. If the trope is turned on its head then I’ll immediately be curious, though. Unsurprisingly, this is the category I'm least likely to write.

I just got around to finish volume 4, will probably read volume 5 tonight and then return them to the library tomorrow. Then I will catch up on my manga app I have on my phone. Already favorited it. I have not been this obsessed with a vampire story in a long time. The only one before this was Trinity Blood.

Lol, yeah, I just found out recently she did Pandora Hearts, which I have heard of, but never read nor watched the anime. I’ve been told I should have for a long time but just never got around to it. I might pick it up in the near future while I wait for Vanitas updates.

I just found out that she had been the creator of it, just yesterday, so before you even mentioned it. I plan to pick it up soon so I can finally see what the hype is about. I never realized she was this good. I knew I felt like I’d seen her name before.

How dare you make me choose: the game
vRules: name your top 10 favorite characters from 10 different fandoms and then tag 10 people
Thanks for tagging me, @hilullabye!
So, because I’m terrible at picking favorites I’ve decided to limit myself to manga and/or cartoon characters. And so, in no particular order:
Noé Archiviste (Vanitas no Carte)
Tumblr media
What’s not to like? He’s kind, inquisitive, and balances Vanitas out splendidly. He’s also terribly interesting; what are the details of his backstory? How will he change over the course of the series? But aside from that he also asks all the questions I want to ask. :D
Edward Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Tumblr media
Pretty much always a given for me on these kinds of lists. I related to him a lot when I was younger; he’s an inspiring character that keeps on going despite how bad things get.
Raven (Teen Titans)
Tumblr media
Another given. I was completely obsessed with this character and I still think she’s awesome. Powerful, mysterious, and cares more than she let’s on. She’s just the best. I also loved her episodes; controlling emotions, mastering oneself, tackling your fears... Powerful stuff.
Bart Allen/Impulse (Young Justice)
Tumblr media
This show is on my mind a lot lately since the third season is airing and while I have some qualms with how things are going I still think this portrayal of Bart was great. He set out to change history, did a good job of it, and befriended the guy that tormented him in his past. What’s not to admire there?
Asakura Hao (Shaman King)
Tumblr media
Another character I was completely obsessed with as a kid. I just found his background and his motivations fascinating. He was so clearly in the wrong but he truly believed he was right and that he would bring peace to the world.
Ichihara Yuuko  & Watanuki Kimihiro (xxxHolic)
Tumblr media
Putting two for one is cheating but oh well. 8D
I loved how wise Yuuko was and how she always helped people, though not necessarily in any way you’d expect. I admire the way she understood so many things and fought for balance. As for Watanuki it was the changes he underwent that spoke to me a great deal. Ultimately, he couldn’t move on, which was the one thing Yuuko knew everyone had to do. It’s honestly their relationship I found so interesting.
Aang (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Tumblr media
There are so many people I want to choose from this series but for now I’ll simply go with Aang. I love how he tries to pursue the monks’ philosophies and how he brings peace and balance to the world.
Daidouji Tomoyo (Cardcaptor Sakura)
Tumblr media
She’s probably the wisest kid in the universe and the most accepting of unrequited love. She also has excellent style.
Sumeragi Subaru (Tokyo Babylon & X/1999)
Tumblr media
CLAMP did you wrong Subaru but you were a kind, terribly considerate person, who deserved so much better.
L (Death Note)
Tumblr media
The fandom often portrays him as a lot nicer than he actually is but as far as the series is concerned he was fighting for the side of good and he was justice even if he meted it out with several ... questionable tactics.
Ahsoka Tano (Star Wars: The Clone Wars & Rebels)
Tumblr media
Okay, I’ve already gone over the limit but she’s just an awesome character. Fiesty, wise, and strong. She’s what Anakin could have been if he wasn’t, you know, Darth Vader. If you haven’t seen her before you’ve got to take a look!
Ahh, it’s so hard to stop at just ten. XD Also, CLAMP has taken over this list. I guess I can’t say I’m surprised; they were a big influence on me.
I’ll tag @violetikigai, @grelleswife, @skylights422, @descendant-of-truth, @ineverywordandsong, @bagel-san, @mistressakiraart, @maripr, @ellahrairah, and @alnair-tair if any of you would care to give this a go. ^^
