Answers About My Faerie Godplumber

Sam, you should definitely see if he has a business card. This is the start of your ability to say "I know a guy".
Funnily enough I did get his name and phone number mainly because while the installation and haul-away was paid through Best Buy, the electrical outlet was his own work so I had to venmo him the money. In keeping with his whole theme, the venmo payment took like twelve tries to go through. I would have paid him in mortal coin if I’d had $100 in cash lying around.

I suspect what you'll do is go and spin the court stories which will be sufficiently magical that when you return you will have white goods that will ALWAYS WORK. bargain!
Honestly, a year of storytelling which I like anyway in return for perpetually functioning appliances does seem like a bargain, as long as they don’t return me 300 years in the future or something.
prairie-grass
Sam being taken to the Court. 'Can I take my cryptids?', The fae take one look at Dearborn and Polk, who stare back with a Particular Look and somehow manage to communicate 'If you take our Dad we won't forget your face.' The fae nod, 'Uhh yeah please do.'
Isn’t it a fae thing that they can just return you like, a day after you left? They’d be okay without me for a day or two, as long as I got to make sure their water dish was fresh before I left.
figtreeandvine
All the fair folk want is stories, so you're golden. Just make sure the Seelie court gives you internet access and a place for Dearborn and Polk. On second thought, just ask them if they can make your apartment part of Underhill.
Oh now see this is a great suggestion, just install a doorway to the other realm in my condo. Probably raise property values too.

Plot twist he's part of whatever mob you got your parents fridge from. They heard you had dishwasher issues
“The crew over in Jersey sent me. They said you needed something....handled.”
“Yeah, it’s my dishwasher.”
“No sweat, easier than cement overshoes.”

VISIT FROM THE GENTRY.
I was extremely polite! You have to be polite to repairmen and powerful otherworldly spirits.
daroos
yeah you wouldn't have gotten an outlet installed for <100$ from anybody else - good move
Certainly not without another month-long wait. I looked at rebooking at one point last week to see if I could move my installation date forward, and they were like “Hahahah no how about we move it out to December 20th?”
goodbyeomelas
I would SAY you should put some cold iron on that thing just to be Sure, but I also think my bread machine is probably demonically possessed and I'm worried if I get it exorcised it won't work anymore, so y'know
Honestly, a good bread machine is worth the occasional wail of the damned or slightly bleeding kitchen wall. If my dishwasher is touched by the fae or possibly a portal to their realm where they will get my dishes really clean I’m okay with possibly having to trade in my firstborn. This dishwasher is that good. (Also suspiciously silent.)
weilongfu
But Sam, are you sure your supernatural installation guy's name is Earl, or was he telling you he's an earl of The Court?
We can’t be sure, but I’m not taking any chances.

Hi - I'm not sure if this crossed your radar but the most fantastic dance AU for the Untamed came my way last week (Bourne's Swan Lake) SO MUCH great meta and dance stuff and hunxi-guilai credited your You Dance Dreams as an inspiration on their tumblr at post / 629634546296569856 I'm mainly sending this because I think you'll enjoy the fic. (I've not seen the canon but this reads like a dream - I've also never danced a step in my life and loved both this and your fics!)
It is so strange to me that one of my fics is apparently this well known among a certain kind of AU! I mean, it is amazing and I am honored, it’s just weird to think of all the little corners of the internet that one’s work can touch. Thank you for letting me know about this one!

I'm gonna be honest, that fic you keep describing as lovely does not sound lovely to me if those are the erroneous assumptions the author is making
Well so here’s the thing. If from the beginning, they’d just gone with Jaskier is sixtyish in this story as a premise, it would’ve been completely fine, and I would be writing out a fic rec instead. Like, it would even work out, the way his friends talk about him, the way he worries about being past it, the way he mostly can still get around and get up to his normal shenanigans, but is occasionally Regretful of doing something too physically-rash.
Given that it’s a non-canon story, there’s no reason they couldn’t have done that, either. They just... didn’t think to, because as far as I can tell they genuinely thought that was reasonable for a character in his forties.
If I just... erased the few lines where Jaskier explicitly discussed his age (there are a few “ah twenty years ago!” kinds of lines as well here and there, and like, guys. Twenty years is a long time, but it’s not like, a crazy long time. I can laugh with some of my friends about the dumb shit we got up to 20 years ago but then later that same evening I can find myself doing some shit that is like 80% as dumb, just better-informed. All those Witcher 3 playthroughs? I met DF and MM 22 and 26 years ago, respectively, and our shenanigans are only constrained by the kids asleep upstairs, y’dig? we’ve got like, another 25 years before we retire, if we’re lucky)-- if you just changed those numbers, the fic would be absolutely perfect.

oh ffs, forty is maaaaybe middle-aged?
And that’s the thing. being middle-aged isn’t a thing that people understand anymore. It’s seen as this thing to dread, and then gets mushed into the same thing as being geriatric. So in our society, being past your mid-thirties (...ish) is basically the same as being retired which is some unspecified brief span of waiting for death. Like, we can’t even imagine being middle-aged. You’re young, and then you’re In Denial, and then you’re dead.
Which ties into this from the tags on @rionsanura‘s reblog of the post--
#but i also think that part of the conception that jaskier was waiting around to die#was centered on the fact that he himself didn't realize he wasn't old?#cause he was vain#and used to life as a Beautiful Youth?#perhaps not#perhaps it's the author's ignorance
So like---------- in many societies, being middle-aged is something you ASPIRE to??? I’d imagine on the Continent it would be too. you’ve survived youth! You’ve lived long enough to marry, and maybe get some kids! You have a career! You’ve had time to amass some kind of wealth or stability!! In our society this is stuff we aspire to too, but we do so while also wanting, somehow, to cling to this illusion of youth as well. You want to settle down but you don’t want to LOOK TOO SETTLED, you don’t want to look too prosperous, you want that Youth Energy and Being In Touch or whatever-- it’s all weird and self-contradicting.
Like! In real life being middle-aged often means something of an end to awkwardness (ok at least an easing of it, i will die still awkward but i shove my foot wholesale into my mouth MUCH less often now through sheer dint of practice), maybe you’ve figured out what fashions suit you so you wear those instead of chasing trends, you’ve finally got a handle on just what it is that upsets your tummy so you eat things that actually nourish you more consistently, yeah you get hangovers more easily and you can’t bounce back from all-nighters like you used to and you just can’t wear ridiculous high heels anymore without paying for it but like, your skin is probably way better, you finally figured out how to get your hair to do that thing you want it to, mostly you’ve figured out how to pay your bills and you know you’re good at some stuff and probably have managed to get paid for them, you’ve probably gotten therapy at some point so you’re not just a bleeding wound of all the wrongs done you in your childhood all the time-- I’m not saying I have my shit together exactly, but shit, guys, I cry a fuckton less than I did even ten years ago, and my cheekbones have come into their own thank you very much.  Sure your body starts to betray you, but I had sciatica at 22 and tendonitis at 27, generally my body is about as well-behaved as it ever was from a daily maintenance perspective. And I just have seen enough shit that I get fazed a lot less often and know what to do a lot more often and that is just nice, y’all, there’s so much less drama and so much less fear all the time. (I mean. *gestures broadly around* not so much at the moment, but like. at least I know who I am.)
like, Jaskier in his forties, in my stories at least, is just settling into a prestigious career, he’s got a back catalogue that’s got him some fame at this point, he’s got a handle on his own appetites and mostly can control his self-destructive impulses, mostly, and in general life is good! But there’s no real awareness in our society about that, that like, life gets good once you’ve got the hang of it, which necessarily also means you are Older. Sheesh.

This is like an INCREDIBLE Untamed fic I read last week which was utterly exquisite... except that it had an 8-month-old baby talk in complete sentences. Short ones. But... complete sentences. WT actual F?
Ha oh man.
It’s not like, a huge dealbreaker, but it’s like yeah okay this person did not think to type into a search bar “when baby start talk” or like. “basic child developmental timeline”. And I guess there’s no way to easily google “what’s it like to be 45″ (although I would argue that since most societies have an established age of retirement you could probably start there???)
I get it, folks, I get that it’s hard to have characters’ ages line up with timelines and things, and if you need a character to Do A Thing For Plot it can be tricky to make that work out. But like. Make that a two-year-old, friend. And make Jaskier sixty, and this fic is perfect.
I would wager it is definitely down to a) not having thought about it that much, b) he’s forty in canon! (never mind that he is also still out on the road in canon), c) not understanding the life expectancy of 50 does not equal dying of old age at 50 fallacy and definitely, definitely, d) not having thought about it all that much.
I’m not really getting my panties in a bunch about this, I just felt like a kind of rant. Like, I’m not mad, and I’m not going to say anything to the author, because the author doesn’t really deserve to be like, Called Out about it, and if you think you know what fic it is please don’t like point this out to the author. Just... if you are  the author, or have written a fic like it where Jaskier is 40 and retired, please... please, IDK, pay a little more attention to the world? and think about where you’re gonna be at 40 and realize that retirement age isn’t under 60 basically anywhere in the world?? and like, think about why you don’t appear to have any older friends or relatives and what’s that about???
Anyway.

Eee! Tysm for the extra tidbit about Fable :D I had zero idea this was in any way even a thing so am feeling very hopeful!
No problem :) I didn’t either until the other week so it’s a really exciting piece of news! It’s been so long and I’ve missed Fable so will be looking forwards to hearing/seeing more about the game. that series makes me nostalgic for a different time and place.
Also, I saw an article the other day too which said the current Fable dev team has people from BioWare, Rockstar and other prominent studios on the roster.

For stories of female monsters have you read The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter by Theodora Goss? It's five of the daughters/creations of the famous (fictional) Victorian mad scientists who band together to (initially) solve a mystery and then in the sequel go on to find and help other women like themselves who are less/more than human. Some embrace the term monster, others reject it but they also form a community for themselves. Definitely worth a look!
Squee! This kind of rec is exactly what I was hoping for! I just grabbed the first book on Amazon. Thank you! 💖💖

May I suggest 'avec' for your rapprochement tag? Would that work? :D
[context]
well, it 1) is a french word that 2) doesn’t have an ambiguous alternate meaning in english, so that’s promising! i had to ask my friend who currently works in food service in france if "avec" is a word you would find in the context of a menu because i wasn't sure - she said yes, but there might be a distinction in usage? like au/à la seems to be for things that are part of the dish and avec is more for sides? (e.g., the vin in coq au vin is not wine in a glass that you drink WITH the dish but rather wine that was cooked IN the dish.) but she's not a native french speaker and isn't positive about that nuance. if there are any native speakers reading this, your insights would be appreciated!
if "avec" is used only for sides on menus, i don't think it would work here. sickfic avec rapprochement (or sickfic avec son rapprochement, i guess, since my friend says on menus it takes the possessive pronoun, which is adorable) would mean something like a sickfic with reconciliation tacked on somehow, maybe in an epilogue or something. what i'm going for is reconciliation incorporated into the sickfic. does avec have that vibe?
maybe it would help if i also translated sickfic into french? if the words on either side of the "au" were french, maybe people would be less likely to jump to "alternate universe." hmm so what would sickfic be in french? too bad it's not a song or it could be a ballade malade. fiction d'affliction? survivre livre?

Hi - I hope this isn't too weird but as someone born and (largely) raised in England with a sister who moved to Scotland two months before the independence vote I really wanted to say a massive thank you for such a kind and genuinely thoughtful response to anon the other day. With all the polarized rhetoric and anger that's everywhere right now, it was truly lovely to find such careful grace in your response. Thank you. Seriously. (1/5)
On a more personal note several of the things you said resonated really strongly with me for a bunch of reasons - you put into words a lot of the things I wrestle with in my own life and identity. I’m Anglo-Japanese and on a totally personal level, it’s awesome! I grew up bilingual and have relatives and great friends in both countries, it’s naturally informed my career as a translator, and I love both countries and cultures from the bottom of my heart. On the other hand I’m painfully aware that I am the product of two isolationist island nations obsessed with civility, good tea, and building racist empires. And both countries are viewed as cute historical sidenotes by the other. It’s… weird. I do struggle when someone squeals with delight and asks for my thoughts on ‘authentic’ cream teas or ikebana arrangements as if the polite facade was all that ever existed for either country. I’m genuinely delighted that people find pleasure or comfort in aspects of both cultures and I’d never rain on anyone’s parade but sometimes the endless gushing praise of how polite the English/Japanese are while ignoring the astonishingly right-wing governments running both countries makes me want to scream with frustration. Sorry - I don’t have a real conclusion to this. I just wanted to say thank you for putting some of the contradictions and frustrations I experience into coherent words! I was so happy and thankful to see that post - it meant a lot. Thank you (5/5)
hello friend, tis not weird at all, thankyou for the lovely and detailed message and for choosing to share it and your experience and some of your identity with me. ❤ that means a lot. this was also very kind of you to say. anon’s question was complicated for me to answer so I’m glad that you were able to take something positive away from what I wrote, and it’s awesome that it resonated so strongly with you. posting here to acknowledge your message and your personal experience, it’s very valid and so are you. ❤ (nb this msg is posted publicly with @allmyfansquees consent)
btw, I hope your sister has been enjoying her stay in Scotland, or enjoyed her stay in Scotland. :) she is very welcome here.
