"God bless your family because you are doing an amazing job."
Words that you don't often hear from a patient uncomfortably lying in bed, in a busy, noisy emergency room, waiting for her treatment. She could be angry with me for bugging her while she tries to take a nap amidst the clamouring around her but she chose to be appreciative.
I am a pathology collector in a prominent hospital in Sydney and for years that I have been working as part of the allied health department, today was the day I felt genuinely appreciated by someone in the workplace. I don't know how or why but those words struck me to my core and and made me ponder (even just for a couple of minutes) and realised how much I have sacrificed after leaving everything I have achieved back home and starting a new life in a different country with only faith and determination with me.
To the rest of the allied health who are doing their best in their chosen endeavour, may we always be grateful for random admiration from the people around us and for encountering simple moments as such.
Or if you haven't heard those words yet, let me be the one to tell you:
May God bless you and your family more because you are doing an amazing job. You're not nothing. You are someone giving so much and you deserve to be appreciated. I am proud of you. You are worth celebrating. ♥️ 🥳

Headlines
Numbed to political news (NYT) With impeachment proceedings underway and an election less than a year away, information is crucial. Yet many Americans say they feel disoriented by the rise of social media, the proliferation of online material and a flood of news. According to one recent poll, 47 percent of Americans believe it’s difficult to know whether the information they encounter is true. About 60 percent say they regularly see conflicting reports about the same set of facts from different sources.
Impeachment schedule (Foreign Policy) Public impeachment hearings in the U.S. Congress continue this week, with eight current and former administration officials to testify, including special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker (Tuesday), Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland (Wednesday), and former Russia advisor Fiona Hill (Thursday). Thursday is also the deadline for Congress to avoid a government shutdown, with lawmakers seeking a delay for a few weeks.
Trump administration’s immigration jails are packed, but deportations are lower than in Obama era (Washington Post) While President Barack Obama--whom immigrant advocates at one point called the “deporter in chief”--deported 1.18 million people during his first three years in office, President Trump has deported fewer than 800,000.
Dollarization in Venezuela (Foreign Policy) Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro welcomed the use of the U.S. dollar on Sunday, after years of forbidding the currency. Dollar transactions have increased in this year as the official currency, the bolivar, lost more than 90 percent of its value. Facing U.S. sanctions, Venezuela’s central bank has been injecting euros into the economy.
Two dead after bridge collapses into river in France (Reuters) A 15-year-old girl and a truck driver died when a bridge collapsed into a river in southwestern France on Monday, officials said. The 150-metre-long suspension bridge in Mirepoix-sur-Tarn, near Toulouse, collapsed at around 8 am local time as a truck, a car and possibly a van were crossing, the local prosecutor said.
Convicted Ex-PM Sharif Leaves Pakistan for Medical Treatment in London (Reuters) Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif left Pakistan on Tuesday in an air ambulance to receive medical treatment in London, his party said on Tuesday, a month after the three-time premier was released on bail from a seven-year sentence for corruption.
China calls on US to stop flexing its muscles in the South China Sea (Reuters) China on Monday called on the U.S. military to stop flexing its muscles in the South China Sea and to avoid adding “new uncertainties” over Taiwan, during high-level talks that underscored tension between the world’s two largest economies.
Last Holdouts Surrounded by Police at Hong Kong University (AP) About 100 anti-government protesters remained holed up at a Hong Kong university Tuesday, unsure what to do next as food supplies dwindled and a police siege of the campus entered its third day.
U.S. Breaks Off Defense Cost Talks Amid South Korea Backlash Over $5 Billion Demand (Reuters) The United States on Tuesday broke off talks on increasing South Korea’s share of the cost of hosting a U.S. military contingent after the two sides failed to narrow differences in a row that has raised questions about the U.S. deployment.
Smoke Shrouds Sydney’s Skyline as Wildfires Burn Nearby (AP) Thick smoke from wildfires has shrouded Sydney and its surrounding areas with health experts warning residents with medical conditions to remain indoors.
Iran Says Calm Has Been Restored After Fuel Price Hike Unrest (Reuters) Protests in Iran triggered by petrol price hikes last week have subsided, an Iranian judiciary spokesman said on Tuesday, a day after the elite Revolutionary Guards warned of “decisive” action if anti-government protests do not cease.
Iraq protests grow (AFP) Striking Iraqis sealed off key bridges and avenues in Baghdad and across the south Sunday, boosting a weeks-long street movement that is demanding a government overhaul. Sit-ins have become the go-to tactic for rallies that erupted in early October in fury over corruption, a lack of jobs and an out-of-touch political class. They have resisted efforts by security forces to snuff the gatherings out and on Sunday thousands came out across the country after activists called for a general strike. In the southern hotspots of Kut, Najaf and Diwaniyah schools and government offices were shut as swelling crowds hit the streets. Protesters burned tyres to block roads in the oil-rich port city of Basra and outside Nasiriyah, prompting security forces to send reinforcements.
Lebanon’s political crisis grows (Foreign Policy) Mohammed Safadi, the top candidate to be Lebanon’s next prime minister, withdrew his name from consideration over the weekend after struggling to form a government with broad support. Sunday marked one month of protests, and thousands of demonstrators across the country took to the streets against the ruling elite. Prime Minister Saad Hariri stepped down on Oct. 29, and a new government would need to enact urgent reforms amid economic crisis. With Safadi out, the chances of forming a government able to do so seemed to grow slimmer.
Russia’s footprint in Syria (Foreign Policy) Just weeks after U.S. special forces began withdrawing from northeastern Syria and Russian and Syrian troops took their place, Moscow has established a helicopter base in the Kurdish-held border city of Qamishli. While Trump partially reversed his abrupt decision to pull all U.S. troops out of the region--sending in National Guard troops and tanks to Deir Ezzor to guard the rich oil fields there as special forces withdraw--the new Russian base reflects a shift in the regional balance of power. But Moscow’s stepped-up military presence could be intended more to protect Syria from Turkey than to compete with the United States.
Israeli settlements in the West Bank get a pass (Bloomberg/WP) Secretary of State Michael Pompeo announced the U.S. no longer views Israel’s settlements in the West Bank as inconsistent with international law. The move is a boon to Trump ally Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and all but dooms any hope of a peace plan. Pompeo said that the Trump administration, as it did with recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital and Israel’s sovereignty over the disputed Golan Heights, had simply “recognized the reality on the ground.”
Yet another election in Israel? (Washington Post) Wednesday marks the deadline for Israeli politician Benny Gantz to form a government after elections in September drew the country to a political standstill. If the former military chief fails, the country will head back for its third election in less than a year. The deadline looms as Israeli forces continue to clash with the ruling Hamas faction in the Gaza strip, for which a shaky cease-fire is in place. The week’s hostilities, which saw 34 Palestinians killed and sent Israelis to bomb shelters as hundreds of rockets rained down, began Tuesday after Israel killed an Islamic Jihad commander in Northern Gaza with a pinpoint strike on his bedroom.
Seven Malian soldiers killed in clash with militants: army (Reuters) Seven Malian soldiers were killed and 15 wounded when militants attacked a patrol in northern Mali on Monday, the army said in a statement.

TAFE Early Learning Facility in Morwell, Victoria
4 May 2021
Morwell TAFE Early Learning Facility, Victoria
Architects: GHD Woodhead
Location: Morwell, Victoria, Australia
Less than 12 months after its inception, Morwell TAFE’s new learning facility was being enjoyed by students thanks to the modular building techniques utilised in its construction.
The two-storey, purpose-built Health and Early Childhood Training Centre (HECTC) accommodates nursing, allied health, individual support and early childhood education and care, along with specialised nursing and individual support labs, specialised early childhood learning spaces and general-purpose classrooms – sectors all catered to local job demands.
With architecture by GHDWoodhead, the building was constructed by Modscape in its Brooklyn factory over a short 12-week period, before being installed to site and ready for occupation only weeks later.
The HECTC facility forms a gateway to the Morwell campus with a defined, angular aesthetic, aptly clad in Colourbond Monument Spandeck. Full-height windows connect the inside and out, and triangular metal sunshades run vertically along the second storey, enhancing passive design principles while teaming with the building’s angular motif. The shape and proportion of both levels of the building also follow those of the golden rectangle – a rectangle with sides equal to the 1:1.61 ratio – iconic proportions that are seen in buildings such as the Notre Dame cathedral, the Taj Mahal and many of the built works of Ancient Greece.
The ground floor is comprised of three general purpose classrooms and an early learning facility, separated by operable walls for flexible and dynamic teaching possibilities, in addition to two shared staff offices, a staff room with kitchen and amenities. Meanwhile, the first level, which can be accessed via stairs or a lift, features two more classrooms, each flanked by an aged care ward in which students can practise theory hands-on in a realistic work environment. Operable walls divide the spaces, while a meeting room and common learning room provide further opportunity for group collaboration.
The brief for Morwell TAFE specified that the new building not “appear modular”. The completely bespoke design caters to this aesthetic, while a concrete plinth base firmly grounds the modular structure and adds to the strength of permanency to site. In addition, durable, high-quality materials elevate the structure and unify the building with other TAFE Gippsland facilities.
The HECTC building is stage one of a dual-stage delivery for the education precinct, with a second stage building, the Trade and Skills Centre, expected in late 2021.

Their best selling item is the t-shirt designed by climate activist and graphic artist, Carla Scotto. ‘Carla gifted us her ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ design to use on tees when we had to stop using the Aboriginal flag. The Always Was tee is our best seller while we fight to be able to #FreeTheFlag so we can celebrate it freely again,’ says Laura. Photo – Bri Hammond

Clothing The Gap items are usually designed in-house, and then then made in Thomastown. ‘We have a strong focus on local manufacturing, and we are the first Aboriginal business to be accredited with Ethical Clothing Australia (ECA). This means that all of our Australian made range is ethically created. People often have the idea that if something is made in Australia, that it is done so ethically. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Using the systems of checks and balances provided by ECA means that we are able to ensure that people are protected and valued in our supply chain,’ says Sarah. Photo – Bri Hammond

Clothing The Gaps (formerly known as Clothing The Gap) is a social enterprise supporting the health of First Nations people.
While the organisation is officially only one year old, co-founders Gunditjmara woman Laura Thompson, and Sarah Sheridan, have been working in the health industry for years.
Laura and Sarah met in 2014 when working at Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (a Community-Controlled health organisation Laura’s grandmother Edna Brown, Aunty Alma Thorpe, and mother Rose Dwyer, helped establish) and the two bonded over their shared passion.
‘We loved working together… Our skill sets were complementary to each other, and most importantly, we were ready for a new challenge,’ says Laura. ‘So, we took a giant leap of faith in stepping out on our own in a new business called Spark Health, which specialised in Aboriginal health promotion.’
Clothing The Gaps grew into its own entity in 2020, partially in response to customer demand for merchandise, and partially due to the pandemic. With COVID-19 forcing most of Spark’s face-to-face programs on indefinite pause, Laura and Sarah decided to channel all their energy into this new pursuit.
The work of Spark Health has now transitioned into the Clothing The Gaps Foundation, and we can’t wait to see it continue to grow from there,’ says Laura. ‘To think that we now have a foundation that is currently fully funded by the purchases of our supporters is incredible. We are now able to self-determine the impact, with no strings attached.’
With the groundswell of Blak business support over the past year, and a renewed focus on the Black Lives Matter movement globally, it’s been a non-stop year for Clothing The Gaps. In particular, Laura and Sarah were at the forefront of a national debate to ‘free the flag’, leading to a Senate enquiry. They sat down with us to reflect on the journey so far!
Can you briefly tell us about the work Clothing The Gaps does?
Clothing The Gaps is an Aboriginal-owned and led social enterprise that exists to celebrate, educate, motivate and advocate for change. As a social enterprise, we reinvest back into the sustainability of the business, and directly support our foundation’s work to add years to Aboriginal people’s lives through motivating communities and people to get moving right across the country.
We know the power of physical activity in creating and maintaining positive physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Regular physical activity is a key protective factor against chronic diseases and can help us to live healthier for longer.
How has the social enterprise evolved over time?
We are so stoked to be able to offer a wide range employment opportunities, including entry-level roles, in a really safe and supportive environment. We have a team of 22 people, 19 of whom are Indigenous, working across impact, operations, design, brand, retail, warehousing and distribution. We are so proud of that!
You were featured in the media several times last year with regards to the ‘Free The Flag’ campaign. Where are things at with this issue now, and how do you hope it’s resolved?
Editor’s note: The Aboriginal flag was originally an artwork created by First Nations artist Harold Thomas, which was then flown as a flag in 1971. The artwork was later proclaimed as the official flag of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia in 1995.
Harold Thomas has always retained the copyright of the flag’s design, which he currently licenses to three companies for commercial use. One of these is the non-Indigenous company WAM Clothing, making them the only company that can sell clothing featuring the Aboriginal flag.
We’ve just wrapped up a great Indigenous Round in the AFLW where we worked with every team to continue to educate and raise the profile of the issue through sport. We know the power of sport in this country to create social and political change, and working alongside teams across codes to use their own platforms has been epic. In 2020, we saw the AFL men’s Indigenous Round stance lead to a Senate inquiry into the use of the Flag.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the first flying of the Aboriginal flag, and we are pushing hard to see the flag free to celebrate this incredible milestone birthday. Two simple things you can do to support us are sign and share our online petition, and write to their local MP using our easy letter template.
What is the design and manufacturing process of your merchandise?
We love that we are able to hold a majority of the processes in house. This means that we are able to create a whole heap of jobs for Indigenous people under our roof, all the way from idea to impact.
Our designs start in-house and are directly linked to a campaign impacting the Indigenous community that we want to see elevated through conversations and actions in society. Our merch has a message and tells a story – the #FreeTheFlag tee and associated campaign is a great example of this.
We then work with our local manufacturing team, just a few kilometres down the road in Thomastown to bring these ideas to life. We are accredited as a business through Ethical Clothing Australia and we manufacture Australian made products as much as we can locally to support local industry and reduce our environmental footprint. Caring for Country is really important to us as a team and as a business.
Once the physical product has been created, our legendary warehousing and distribution team based at Sydney Road then fulfil orders and ensure the shop is fully stocked. For many of the staff, it’s their first job and we’ve loved watching them grow and take on new challenges.
Some of the items you sell are labelled ‘ally friendly’, but not all. What’s the distinction, and why is this important for non-Indigenous people to understand?
We created the ‘ally friendly’ and ‘Mob only’ logos to make it easier for both our supporters, and us! It helps to clearly and easily communicate which of our pieces are for allies, and which pieces are just for Mob to celebrate.
We create our products with Mob in our hearts and then everyone else in mind, but sometimes we create something that is culturally specific, that is just for Mob only, for example our ‘Shades of Deadly’ tee which will be released soon!
One thing that we do really encourage people to think about, is what else are you doing, beyond wearing the tee? The tee is one part of the puzzle, but it’s far from the complete picture. We ask people to continually reflect on opportunities to create conversations and practice anti-racism in their world. We all have a role to play in this.
Do you ever experience activism fatigue?
Campaigning, advocacy and education are at the core of our brand and it is part of our responsibility to leverage our platform for change.
Our tees allow us to continue to advocate when we are experiencing activism fatigue. It enables you to wear your values on your tee, and to continue having conversations when your voice is tired.
This is where we need people to see issues that affect Indigenous peoples as issues are not just issues for Indigenous people to address. This heavy workload can’t just rest on the shoulders of a few.
What are some goals Clothing The Gaps hopes to achieve in the near future?
When thinking about what we hope to see happen in the near future, we are absolutely focused on seeing a free flag this year. We also can’t wait to announce our next virtual run, and officially launch the Clothing The Gaps Foundation.
We are also working on our next drop – it’s full of conversation sparking pieces. We can’t wait to see it out in the world and expand our retail to include wholesaling so more places can stock our conversation starters!

Digital Cultures: Assessment 3: Production Project
Digital media and technologies allow people to express themselves and find others in their community who support and encourage their sexual growth. The digital environment for queer identifying people or individuals questioning their sexuality can be used as both a private or public forum. The anonymity of the internet has provided a safe space for many LGBT identifying people as well as others looking to explore their sexuality to express themselves and in an online community (Culturalpolitics.net, 2018). Some digital technologies can encourage users to question and explore their sexual identities in a nurturing space, while other sites may be harmful to queer identifying or people questioning their sexuality. But has this anonymity also allowed homophobic and transphobic harassment to spread and is the internet the best first point of call for youth questioning their sexuality?
In the past couple of months, I have gained a full-time job, left home and moved to another city. It has been challenging and at times overwhelming. Leaving the home town bubble and my family has been liberating and also gave me a chance to reflect on my personal values and my sexuality. While studies show for many, university is the time when sexual experiments are more likely to take place (Kuperberg and Walker, 2018). I was never one of those people, I always felt that like I was very grounded in who I was attracted to – men and I felt sure as what I identified as – a straight female. I believe this has to do with my upbringing. My parents are, and always have been, very conservative. My parents, grandparents and a couple of siblings voted ‘No’ on the Same-Sex Marriage Survey. Just an example of how conservative my family was, I remember asking at an early age what would happen if a man and another man got married, my mother shook her head and said it was impossible and doesn’t happen. Although I wouldn’t go as far to call my parents and grandparents homophobic, I know if I ever came out as gay, they would be upset, I don’t believe they would disown me, but I know they would be disappointed. While I have been an ally of the LGBT community, until recently I never thought I could fully explore my own sexuality.
As someone who was mature and worldly enough to not be worried about my attraction to the opposite sex, I wondered how young people would feel, especially around adolescence, when puberty and hormones are happening and when things can easily become overwhelming.
Studies show that 78% of queer-identifying youth have turned to the internet to research sexuality and sexual health, the main reasons being having no one to ask and privacy was a concern (Mitchell et al., 2014). Googling: ‘How can you tell if you are gay’ will shower one with WikiHow articles, phycology articles and humorous YouTube videos. What queer youth need is a safe space online to feel interconnected and discuss how they feel.
A great example of a contemporary digital site is Tumblr, the community-building site offers users opportunities to explore gender and sexual identities and for many users, the site offers a complex digital network that supports safe explorations of identity (Byron and Robards, 2017). Although Tumblr is far from the perfect site, users have discussed the need to leave the site to avoid drama and negative spaces (Byron and Robards, 2017). Another LGBT-friendly site, Beyond Blue provides forums where users can share their experiences as an LGBTI individual and encourage others to talk to others or seek help (Beyondblue.com.au, 2018).
When I was questioning my sexuality, I turned to Tumblr and Twitter, I followed and read what LGBT people had to say about their experiences. What I liked about these digital sites was it was easy to be anonymous, much more so than any other platform, such as Instagram and Facebook. While I was quiet about my sexuality, due to the fear of what my family would think, some LBGT people are out and proud in the digital space. Herrera recognized that many young female-identifying individuals were using sexual identity hashtags on Instagram, such as #lesbian, to affirm themselves in the queer community. When queer identifying people join and connect with these queer digital communities, it encourages inclusivity and a sense of belonging to a group. (Herrera, 2017).
A good example of digital queer technologies is the gay hook up app, Grindr. On this app, participants can choose to remain anonymous or upload photos and reveal themselves to potential sexual partners. Ahlm describes Grindr as, a “…cultural space where publicness and privateness co-exist, creating tensions for self-preservation that are structured by contemporary sexual politics” (Ahlm, 2017).  Being confident enough to come out to others as a proud homosexual can help with confidence building and sexual identity.
Unfortunately, the internet isn’t always a safe space for queer people. There is no shortage of hateful, homophobic and transphobic sites on digital spaces. It doesn’t take long to find anti-LGBT sites on the internet, especially sites like Reddit (Reddit, 2018). Online sites like Reddit and Discus are unmoderated forums where reading hateful messages may be detrimental to a young persons mental health. And although these sites terms of service explicitly forbid targeted harassment, hateful language, and “communities dedicated to fostering harassing behaviour”, anti-LGBT material can be easily found (Warzel, 2018). Care needs to be taken to help ensure that the online digital spaces are is accurate tone specific to sexual minority youth (Mitchell et al., 2014). There is no doubt that discrimination and exclusion can contribute to LGBT people experiencing levels of depression, anxiety and other mental health issues (Lee et al., 2017). This can contribute to higher levels of alcohol or drug abuse, homelessness and poverty, disengagement from education and schooling and chronic health conditions (Rosenstreich, 2013). Although it’s important to note that not all LGBT identifying people turn to substance abuse.
Homophobia and transphobia lead to queer identifying people to hesitant to disclose their sexual or gender identity. Depending on one’s background, many LGBT people will not disclose their identities unless they are confident of anonymity, this may lead people to not seek out the help they need (Rosenstreich, 2013).
From my own experience, Tumblr and Twitter helped me research and explore LGBT possibilities in my own life. The anonymity of these spaces let me research and connect with other people in the queer community. Whilst the anonymity and convenience of the internet is positive, young people questioning their identity need to access safe sites and keep away from harmful websites that preach hate against queer identifying peoples. Digital spaces such as Tumblr and queer-positive sites such as Tumblr and Beyond Blue forums, where people can build a sense of community and comradery should be sought by young people identifying as LBGT or questioning their sexuality. Whilst caution should be taken when reading unmoderated forums, such as Reddit and Disqus (Warzel, 2018). Tumblr and other sites that encourage inclusivity can be helpful, but users must be aware those digital sites may become overwhelming. It’s suggested that users manage this by taking breaks from digital spaces (Byron and Robards, 2017). It’s important to remember that LGBT-identifying youths mental health and wellbeing is most important.
