This is an extremely high class and cultured painting I did during a live stream on Twitch yesterday of John Singer Sargent’s portrait of John Ridgely Carter. It is painted alla prima. The first photo is mine. For you morons out there who don’t know what alla prima means, it’s basically a painting done in one go. I was unsatisfied with Sargent’s knowledge of painting and I wished to improve upon it which I did very easily. I definitely did not have any problems painting this and also, fun fact: though live on stream, I was only wearing a T-shirt and socks. I will make a video of this and also post the entire glorious stream on my widely popular YouTube channel for those of you who wish to increase your intellect stat. Painting from live model. 1hour into the process and the result after 3 hours. Painting from live model is always a challenge. I try to analyse my work the day after the session and figure out what went well and what I can improve. So what went well for me was to create a structure without details, just focusing on form, and like I saw in Sargent’s portraits, a lot of soft edges thougout the image. What could be better is that I tend to get lazy after a while when it comes to color mixing. It’s vital to keep observing and mix colors conciously instead of using what’s on the pallette. Clifford Wilton 48”x48” oil on panel When I used to ask Clifford what he thought of a particular painting of mine, he would often reply: “It would be great if you had used a 2 inch brush.” When he did me the honor of sitting for this portrait, I made sure to do just that. I wanted to capture both his power and frailty in this portrait so I used violent reds and ochers as my underpainting.
