Leroy Robert "Satchel" Paige was born on July 7, 1906, in Mobile, Alabama. Though many speculate it may have been more like 1903.

According to Paige, his mother sent him to earn money carrying luggage for businessmen at the train station, but he was frustrated with the little money it paid. So he rigged a pole to carry several bags at once to make the job pay better, and his co-workers purportedly told him, "You look like a walking satchel tree." And his nickname stuck.

At the age of 42 in 1948, Paige was the oldest major league rookie while playing for the Cleveland Indians. He played with the St. Louis Browns until age 47, and represented them in the All-Star Game in 1952 and 1953. He was the first player who had played in the Negro Leagues to pitch in the World Series, in 1948, and was the first electee of the Negro League Committee to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1971.

One of the last things we saw of Kira in DS9 was her tossing Sisko's baseball. And it was very appropriate to see her doing that when we see her again for the first time in Lower Decks.

And over the years, people in the DS9 fandom have mused that baseballs took on religious significance to the Bajoran people because of Sisko. Personally, I don't think that would be the case. Bajorans may be very spiritual but they're not ignorant.

Instead, I'd like to think that the story of Sisko leaving his baseball in his office during the Dominion occupation as a promise that he would return spread across Bajor. And some Bajorans copied the replicator patterns for baseballs from DS9 and installed them on replicators on Bajor. And whenever a Bajoran wants to demonstrate their intent to return to some place they're leaving, they leave behind a baseball. So baseballs on Bajor have emotional but not religious significance.

ok so we all agree that jedi sports are just like, ludicrously insane, right?

like jedi baseball is really only technically sort of like baseball, if you squint very hard and are also very drunk. the ball is a stunner shot, the bat is your lightsaber, and it's less 'catching to throw out' and more 'deflecting it directly at the runner'.

Jedi soccer has a special pitch with re-inforced walls and ceiling because the last time a ball escaped the pitch it went through three buildings.

okay but din and luke would absolutely be those loud parents who get super into it when their kid plays sports, but not in the ‘yell at the refs and take the game way too serious’ kind of way, but more in the ‘constant stream of support and overwhelming enthusiasm for their kid’ kind of way where it’s just like pure aggressive affection - like they are out there cheering their kid on 100% no matter how obnoxious they are to the other parents because they just genuinely love and think of the world of their child but also they’re just both highly competitive people so it manifests itself like ‘did you see that goal?! atta boy grogu!’ and ‘take it easy on ‘em, slugger, give the other kids a chance!’ and ‘you’re doing amazing, kiddo! you show them how it’s done!’ and they always leave afterwards smiling and laughing as a family and talking about their favourite parts of the game and it’s just so clear that they all care about each other so much- embarrassing antics and all
