For Matthew, this scene was an important one, but one that he felt needed a different energy than what is on the page. "It is very similar and it's also simultaneously very different to the book which I think is just one way of describing this entire movie," he says. "Casey said to me after watching it for the second or third time, 'It's like there's my book, and then there's your movie and the two are very, very similar and also very different,' which is good because if the movie was so faithful to the book, it, I don't even think it would please the fans of the book.  "I know that's probably a controversial thing to say but it wouldn't have served the story very well." He continues: "I needed to observe the logic of a film and trust that I had internalized the emotional truths of the book and the Storming of Kensington in the book is a lot more chaotic and Alex is highly charged.  "When we were in rehearsals, and Taylor and Nick and I began to really delve into that scene, we realized quickly that if Alex came on that strong then Henry, given where he is mentally, would simply say, 'well, get out,' and kick Alex out. So we knew implicitly that we needed to do a different version of that scene, one in which Alex isn't at all certain of success.  "In the book, Alex is willing to burn down the castle in order to get what he wants, and although the scene actually uses a lot of dialogue from the book, our Alex in the film knows that if this doesn't work, their relationship is over. So he's a little more careful with Henry, more fearful, and Henry is more heartbroken, and those decisions really determined everything else that followed in the scene."

Galitzine, meanwhile, says his most rewarding time on set came during the film's emotional climax, when Alex and Henry must decide if—and how—they're going to move forward in their relationship. “It's the emotional height of the movie in a lot of ways, and sometimes as an actor, you can very much get in your head about that,” he says. “But Taylor really was just so emotionally present that it helped me. We got to a vulnerable, beautiful space. Those kinds of moments are where you drift into a level of truth and sincerity that feels very real. That's what we're always aiming for.”

ML: We had to break for lunch, and we haven't finished the scene and I was really, really worried that we were gonna come back from lunch and I would've lost them and never re-captured what was happening on set before lunch. And it was the pivotal part of the scene, the end where Alex makes an ultimatum to Henry. We got back on set and we started filming again and instantly in the first take, after lunch, Taylor started crying and Nick was facing away from him and he heard Taylor, and Nick started crying. The back half of that scene is so beautiful because they're doing such great work and I really had a difficult time cutting it because there was such beautiful, nuanced work from both of them. What's so remarkable about it is they had just had lunch, and they came right back into it and they were more dialled in, more in touch with each other than before. It was pretty remarkable. I have to say that was the moment I knew that whatever happened with this movie, those two actors would be fine in their careers.

Hi!

I was wondering how do you elevate or better flesh out a very vague premise (e.g. A man falls in love with his boss). But there are many ways to take vague ideas like this and it’s hard to make it more.

there are really only two paths: the easy, long road; and the hard, fast road. on extremely rare occasion you may hit the jackpot and find an easy, fast road, but in my experience that is like winning the lottery.

the easy, long road:

you write the idea down somewhere. you let it incubate for a really long time. you have faith in the universe that all the pieces will begin to click into place until you go, "i've got it," and start writing.

i call that moment "ignition." when your vague "what am i even trying to write" idea clicks into "wait wait wait, i'm onto something here" and your brain starts churning out ideas for scenes and plot points.

there can be a lot of false starts, where you try to shoehorn your vague idea into another vague idea and see if they make a less vague idea, but sometimes that doesn't work. you may also start working on something else and realize you're unconsciously writing that vague idea you had 3 years ago. but overall it's a passive process. you have to wait for specificity to find you.

the hard, short road:

you write the idea down somewhere. you stare at it until you get a headache, and then you take some ibuprofen and stare at it some more. using the "ignition" metaphor, this is like your car not starting so you just keep turning the engine until it either starts or you flood it.

if you brute force your vague idea, you can potentially ruin it for yourself, but if you're motivated to take this path, i think your first step is to get out a notebook and start brainstorming. if the premise is "a man falls in love with his boss," write a list of industries where they might work. then circle a few of them and start researching those industries to see if you can find a nugget of information that clicks with your idea until you get some kind of conflict churning.

if you can't find anything, you make more lists. list out potential endings, plot points, inciting incidences. character traits and arcs. countries, cities. for every item of every list, make a list of possibilities. if this, then this and this. if that, then that and that. and you go on and on and on until you maybe have enough to get some words down.

an example:

my sister, a copywriter, started doing social media for a welding school. she told me she was learning a lot about welding and that i should write a story about a welding teacher. this school specifically is one of the best in the country, and my sister said something to the effect of, "people come from all over the country to live in this shithole town for six months. that seems like an interesting story."

in my A4 rhodia, on december 19, 2023, i wrote,

story of welding teacher at best welding school in the country

lonely ISTP casey affleck kinda guy (that was my sister's idea; she meant it in a derogatory way)

being taken care of by his grandmother?

all i had was "welder" kind of in the back of my head. fast forward to earlier this month, watching season 3 of the Bad Batch and having a lot of feelings about Crosshair's shakey hands (i've also developed a tremor in my hands).

and then i thought, a welder whose hands begin shaking. that's a conflict, that's an inciting incident. his whole career might be in jeopardy.

i wrote this paragraph:

He'd never admitted to his wife that he wanted kids. They didn’t have any, though, for the same reason he never became a farmer—he didn’t want to raise something just to see it slaughtered. Who knew what kind of war the country would cook up in eighteen years? Turn of the century, sending kids out to god knows where, just the right number of years from Vietnam that everyone would’ve forgotten it, the way that by Vietnam they’d forgotten Korea.

i managed to weave this general idea into the bigger plot of a novel i started a long time ago, and it reignited my interest in that project, and now i'm feeling really good that this 200k monstrosity i thought i would just throw away now might have some potential, more importantly some focus, all because of a vague idea i wrote down months ago.

so i just want to talk about the whole donnie and april thing from the 2012 series since i have a lot of thoughts on them both and need somewhere to just. get it out my system.

so off the bat im gonna say i’m pretty neutral about the april/donnie ship. i.. don’t really care for it but if it’s there it’s not gonna overly bother me. i’m pretty much on the fence for most things tmnt ship related (though, big exception for woodyangelo just cus. lol) that being said i do have some thoughts about how it was handled in the 2012 show.

as most people might agree, the writing for these two wasn’t great. i think, just in my humble opinion, that the writers kinda ping ponged back and forth depending on fandom criticism of the ship. one minute the relationship seemed to be slowly developing, a nice easy slow burn and then it’d take a sharp turn and it was back to a lot of uncomfortable pining and uncertainty as to where they would both end up. i think the writers wanted to appease both ends of the fandom here by making it somewhat ambiguous but it kinda blew up in their faces. big time.

so then you have the people who put all the blame on april for this. “she’s leading donnie on!” “she’s playing with both donnie and casey!” “she just wants the attention!” and, yeah. maybe. but here’s my defence: (bad writing aside for a moment, let’s pretend that all of this was done on purpose) april doesn’t know what she wants. when we meet april in the show it’s evident that she’s a little dorky and uncool and she doesn’t have ANY friends. she has irma but it seems to be one of those friendships built out of pure convenience. “oh you don’t have friends, i don’t have friends. cool. let’s hang out.” in every scene they have together it’s awkward and weird because they don’t really seem to click. april has like, as little social skills as the turtles. she doesn’t have friends let alone have TWO guys show her any appreciation and affection. how is she supposed to know how to deal with all that? she’s a teenage girl, feelings are complicated.

and some people might blame donnie. “he kept persisting even when she gave clear hints” “he was being a weirdo about it” “he made her uncomfortable” donnie is a teenage boy who happens to be a mutant. a mutant that lives underground and had never even MET a girl until they saved april. donnie’s only point of reference for romance is what he’s most likely seen on tv or in books. it’s that really cheesy affectionate stuff that might work in movies, but in real life is just strange. donnie has even less social skills that april. he’s only ever had his brothers and dad to talk to. he doesn’t know how to communicate his feelings properly because up until he met april, he probably never even knew what it was to have a crush on somebody

my headcanon for these two is that donnie is clearly autistic. he’s very overly empathetic towards april but can’t understand why his efforts aren’t paying off like he thinks they will. i think april being a young teenage girl with a lot on her plate, might not recognise why donnie is acting this way. ive seen a lot of people also headcanon that april is aromantic which i totally 100% love and agree with. i don’t think she recognises this in the way donnie recognises his own autism. it causes them to clash, and neither of them really understand why that is, and can’t quite communicate it to the other until they’ve figured themselves out.

a lot of people say that 2012 ruined the donnie and april friendship that was pretty strong throughout the franchise but honestly, even the 2003 show had pepperings of donnie’s slight crush on april, even back then. it’s not as obvious but it was definitely there. obviously it never got brought up, which imo is a little heartbreaking to think of poor don harbouring these secret feelings for his friend and then having to just. get over it when she marries casey but i think their friendship is still pretty special to them both that it eventually stops becoming an issue for him.

2012 donnie was a social wreck. he had no clue what he was doing and i think the writers could have done waaaay better in making that less of a fault and more of just. idk. just something that made people hate him a little less. it’s in the same vein as mikey’s adhd. i think the writing was a product of its time and that’s why mutant mayhem tackles those issues way way better than 2012 ever did.

it could also be said that donnie and april don’t even really have a lot in common, like some iterations. she’s smart but she’s not a scientist, and donnie’s crush is first of all born out of just physical looks, meaning that maybe donnie just happened to latch onto her because he felt a teeny glimpse of normality (“i could love a girl and she could love me back”) and kinda just held onto that. any of the other girls in the show, donnie doesn’t really draw himself towards but that’s because the other girls are mostly his brothers love interests and donnie is a firm believing in sticking to the bro code lmao (although maybe just from mikey’s perspective, but donnie does seem quite friendly with renet but that might have just been a 2003 callback perhaps, but they have more in common than her and mikey do)

all in all, the donnie/april thing could have been handled way better, especially with casey thrown into the mix. but is there one person solely responsible for the way their relationship played out? absolutely not. they both crossed some boundaries and both made some mistakes that backfired but like i said, they are far from perfect and looking back on their arc together, it’s a little heartbreaking to see how.. unsure they both are, of themselves and of each other. but that’s just my two cent on the whole thing.

i don’t think female characters were the 2012 writers strong point sadly and april suffered as a result but i genuinely think in her good moments, she shines. and donnie isn’t a creep, he’s just a good kid that wants to find his own happiness, even if he looks in the wrong places, both their intentions are good, i believe.

I remember I was kind of introduced to this ship because I followed one of my idols who shipped it and made fanart of it and it was on DA. This was back before it got deactivated my account.

I LOVE 'Eyes of the chimera' episode. They were basically supporting each other all the way.

Ngl the transfem Leo lovers made me love it even more because I love me some lesbians. TMNT is already filled with some lesbians so why not add more!

I love how April is always by Leo's side and we see how much she cares for him.

Controversial opinion: It's cute.

They both have the same energy and another controversial opinion but, Leo has a way closer relationship with April then Donnie. I've kind of seen more scenes with them together then with her and Donnie.

Though just like last time I prefer her being an older sister figure to him that Leo looks up to.

They both care for each other and love each other no matter what.

April pretty much comforts the turtles about their insecurities so she would do the same with Leo.

Probably a 6/10 or something. Again, prefer them as siblings but don't hate it. I'll kind of indulge in it tbh-

It’s over

Casey and Bryce argue over him pushing her away. Takes place sometime in Open Heart book 1, because I find it hard to believe Casey wouldn’t have an issue with Bryce still being so secretive with her when they’ve been seeing each other for so long.

“Casey, wait!” Bryce chased her down the corridor.

Case rolled her eyes and kept walking, until she felt Bryce’s hand on her wrist trying to stop her. She whirled around to face him, shooting him a sharp glare.

“Don’t cause a scene at work.” She muttered, as harshly as she could whilst trying not to draw any more attention to them.

“Please, Case. I miss you.”

“No you don’t, Bryce. You said this means something. I never pushed you further than that, I’ve been happy with what we have. But I still thought we were close. You haven’t acted like this means something to you at all. One minute you act like this is serious, like we actually have something, the next you’re pushing me away and ignoring my texts for a week. It’s giving me whiplash.”

“You’re my best friend.” Bryce pleaded.

Casey flinched. She knew they weren’t together, not really, but this hurt.

“You don’t treat a friend like this.” She spat, shaking with anger as she tried to hold back tears. She knew everyone was looking at them, everyone would have something to say. The highest ranked internal medicine intern and highest ranked surgical intern, yelling at each other in the middle of the hospital. Rumours already swirled around the two of them, and Casey knew they weren’t all kind. Half the hospital wanted to be sleeping with Bryce, and they all wondered why he chose her, of all people. Casey often wondered that too, when she wasn’t absolutely livid with him. The rumours about her also sleeping with Ramsey had made things worse recently. Casey didn’t mind a few odd rumours, but she had worked hard for this career, working her way through med school whilst also studying every spare minute, and the idea that she didn’t earn this spot hurt her, especially when she couldn’t even fully deny the rumours. Of course, she hadn’t slept with Ramsey, but she felt that he wanted to sleep with her, and it constantly worried her, making her question whether it was really her talent that got her where she was. It also caused everyone who was wanting to go out with Bryce themselves to resent her more, thinking she was sleeping around, not that it would’ve been any if their business if she was. Then there was the other half of the hospital, who thought Bryce was arrogant and cocky, and wondered why Casey put up with him. Bryce notoriously took what he wanted, and while Casey had always admired his drive, those who didn’t see how sweet, kind and caring he always was were jealous and bitter at how quickly he was making a name for himself at the hospital.

“I know, Case, I’m sorry. Things have been intense lately. I’ve needed to study.”

Casey scoffed. “Things have been no more intense for you than me. You used to tell me when you were stressed. I find it so hard to believe that you couldn’t reply to a single text.”

“Case-”

“No, Bryce. I’m done. Whatever this is- if this was even ever something, it’s over.”

Casey walked away, trying to keep her footsteps steady and avoid running into a supply closet and breaking down into tears. This was already embarrassing enough. She didn’t look back, refused to look back. If she did, she would’ve seen the devastation plainly written on Bryce’s face, seen Bryce grab a doorframe just to hold himself up as he watched her walk away.

That evening, Casey settled herself onto the sofa, piled under fluffy blankets. She had no intention of ever leaving the apartment again, she decided.

“Casey, you’re coming with us tonight.” Jackie commanded.

Casey groaned.

“I’m ill.” She moaned, nursing a hot chocolate bursting with marshmallows and pretending to watch Greys Anatomy.

Sienna looked at her sympathetically, but Jackie rolled her eyes.

“No, you’re wallowing, and you’re scared of seeing Lahela out tonight. It’s a girls night, and you don’t have a choice right now.”

Casey glanced up at Jackie, and realising she really didn’t have a choice, groaned again and padded over to her room to change.

“Put something hot on!” Jackie yelled after her.

An hour later, Casey was on her sixth - no, maybe seventh - tequila shot, and she had to admit she felt better. Her head felt light and fuzzy, and she was still thinking about Bryce, but it was nice to be distracted. She had briefly seen Bryce across the room when they’d walked into the bar, but she’d turned away immediately, and he seemed to have the good sense not to approach her. Sienna and Jackie were good friends, she thought happily. She really loved them.

“Aw, we love you too, Case.” Sienna grinned.

“Did I say that out loud?” Casey mused, slurring slightly.

“Unfortunately, yes. I forgot party Casey is sometimes soppy Casey.” Jackie groaned, looking equal parts irritated and affectionate.

“You love it.” Casey laughed.

“Look, Case! That cute guy is looking at you.” Sienna pointed - very unsubtly - to an attractive, slightly older man across the bar.

“Go over there.” Jackie ordered.

“Noooooo. I’m not ready. It’s girls night. Besides, Bryce would be annoyed.” She moaned.

“I thought you and Bryce were just friends anyway. And that you’re done.” Jackie replied, not very gently in Casey’s opinion. Tough love was not always best. Casey decided to glare at Jackie.

“Come on, he’s so cute. Just get his number.” Sienna giggled.

“Fine.” Casey relented, “But I want you to buy me an extra large cheesy fries on the way home.”

Sienna and Jackie practically pushed her out the booth. Casey went to the bar under the pretence of ordering another drink, and feigned surprise when the cute man next to her introduced himself. She smiled at him, chatting about herself and asking him questions about himself, trying her best to listen and seem interested, although her heart wasn’t really in it. He seemed nice enough, but he wasn’t really nearly as cute as Bryce, and he wasn’t as funny either, despite how many tequila shots she had downed. After a while, she excused herself, but not before giving him her number and agreeing to a potential date. She deserved to have fun and maybe this would help her forget Bryce.

On her way to the bathroom, Casey felt a hand grab her wrist, and she paused, stomach dropping.

“What are you doing?” Bryce growled. He sounded quite drunk too. He wasn’t normally the jealous type, but then he usually knew Casey would be going home with him.

“Having a night out with my friends.” She replied, trying to brush him off.

“Are you trying to make me jealous?”

“No, Lahela.” She snapped, “You have no reason to be jealous now anymore anyway, we’re nothing.”

Bryce ran a hand through his hair, desperately.

“I guess that’s fair. Look, I know how I’ve been acting- well, I know I’ve been off with you. Just let me explain, please.”

Casey could feel tears beginning to prick at her eyes. She couldn’t stay here much longer.

“Your time to explain is done, Bryce. I don’t care anymore.” Casey tried to speak with confidence, but her voice betrayed her, cracking mid-sentence. A tear rolled down her cheek, and Bryce reached forward as if to brush it off, but thought better of it and dropped his hand, letting it hang limply at his side.

“Look, Case. I hate myself for making you feel like this right now.”

“Then don’t make me feel like this.” Casey was dangerously close to full on sobbing now, and a tear ran down Bryce’s cheek as well, something Casey had never seen before.

“Look, Case, I’ve had so much family stuff going on. It’s been a lot, and I didn’t want to burden you with it. I know it was shitty, I should’ve told you, I just don’t like to talk about them. We’ve never been close, and I try not to think about them.” Bryce admits.

“I’m sorry, Bryce.” Casey replied softly, a hint of sympathy in her eyes. “That’s horrible. But you shouldn’t have pushed me away like that. You should’ve said something. You don’t need to tell me everything if you’re not ready, but I can’t feel like that again. I’ve been trying so hard Bryce, but I’ve needed you this past week, and I needed you to need me back. I can’t be doing this with someone that can’t communicate with me.”

Tears were streaming down both of their cheeks at this point, and Casey knew people were looking. She felt a hand gently grab her shoulder, and felt Sienna pulling her away.

“Come on, Case. Let’s get home.” Sienna said gently.

“Case-” Bryce began, but Jackie cut him off.

“Leave it, Bryce. You’re both drunk, just go home.”

Casey blindly followed her friends to the exit, allowing herself to glance quickly back at Bryce, who was staring back at her, a look of gut-wrenching agony on his face.

The next day, Casey was completing her rounds, admittedly slightly hungover. Finally, after what seemed like forever, her shift ended and she headed to the changing rooms. She sighed as she saw Bryce in there - just her luck. He smiled tentatively as she entered, holding out a single red rose. Casey rolled her eyes.

“It’s not that easy, Bryce.”

“I know Case. But I know we have something great. I’m not giving up, I’m going to win you back, I promise.”

Casey carefully kept her face straight, and looked down, refusing to betray any emotion. Bryce looked slightly disappointed, but unsurprised.

“I‘ll see you tomorrow.” He smiled at her again, sadly but sincerely as he headed to the exit.

It was only once he’d left that Casey allowed a small, private smile to appear on her face.

I really wish the Fire writers weren’t so terrible. I totally believe it’s in character for Brett to want to adopt considering she sees herself in that baby. But I also think her anger spiral with Adler wasn’t just about her screw up. I stopped watching after 11x03 (will never forgive them for killing Hawkins off), but I didn’t read anything that said Brett was acting like she did in 11x20. I know Sylvie Brett Two Ts has made appearances but it’s been a while. Was the last time when Foster was pushing her boundaries in season 8 with trying to override Brett’s decisions as the PIC? Anyway, after Casey came back to town in 11x18 she seems all out of sorts. More easily annoyed (with Dylan), more easily angered (with Adler and even Boden slightly), and almost unsure? No one in the firehouse has noticed, outside of Violet and even then she didn’t seem to get exactly why Brett has not seemed like her normal self. Violet knew when Brett was acting down and out at the end of season 9 that is was because of Casey.  In my opinion, this is exactly what’s going on right now. Casey returned with no notice and completely shattered Brett’s illusions of moving on. She’s obviously still trying to force herself to move on with Dylan, though I do believe the beginning of the end of that started in 11x21. She knows the relationship isn’t right because she waited so long to tell him about her wanting to adopt the baby, and didn’t ask him how he felt about it. I also think she doesn’t want him involved at all, even if he wanted to be. Like I said before, it’s totally in character for her to want to adopt, dating back to season 4, but this also feels a little like desperation to fill that hole Casey left. Those hopes to be with him and probably have a family. If she can’t have Casey, at least she can have someone to love and care for. She still thinks he moved on and is in a serious relationship. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that’s she jumping into this so fast, and strongly, after that. The storyline doesn’t seem so out of the blue when you look at it from that angle. I don’t know about anyone else, but it feels obvious to me and I’m really mad at how the female friendships have been written this season because neither Violet nor Kidd has noticed. When was the last time Brett and Kidd even had a scene together like they used to have when Foster was around? Then to have Violet pushing Brett to Dylan constantly even though it’s obvious Brett is not comfortable with it. What the fuck is up with that? Unless it has something to do with him being Hawkins’ friend? But Violet is more levelheaded than that. I don’t think she’d try to live out her relationship with Hawkins via Brett and Dylan. Grief is obviously different for everyone, but no. 

How does Casey tie into this storyline in the finale? The only thing that makes sense right now is Brett leaving 51. I don’t think she’ll up and go to Portland because of Casey’s talk with Boden about coming back to Chicago. I’m not one to believe Jesse is coming back fulltime, I think if anything he’ll maybe do two episodes or so a season if there’s a reason (like the task force storyline or even coming back for Brett, hint hint wink wink nudge nudge) like he’s stated before. My theory is she takes a step back from being a paramedic and maybe only takes on paramedicine duties (due to her conversation with the foster parents about timing). I was originally thinking a job promotion, but that’s never even been hinted at. I don’t think Brett would want to be behind a desk anyway. Matt comes back to Chicago as a Captain at another house or maybe even as a Battalion Chief. This gives both Kara and Jesse the option of popping in when they feel like it and when the storyline calls for it. Kara’s contract is probably on the more expensive side so this would also be in line with the budget cuts Dick Wolf shows will be going through next season. I know some have theorized that Brettsey will be the cliffhanger or even Matt in danger with the task force storyline, but that makes no sense unless Jesse is definitely coming back for at least 12x01. Which I get the feeling he isn’t, otherwise this adoption storyline wouldn’t feel so rushed. I feel like another storyline would be used to get Brett and Casey back together anyway, if that were the case. If Casey really is proposing like it seems like (and we’re clowns so can we really trust ourselves with that speculation?) it gives Brettsey another reason to slow down in their careers and not be at 51 anymore. That could also be the move Jesse was talking about in interviews for Casey to get Brett back. There’s also Kara’s hint at the last OC Day about a ring, etc etc..

This is Chicago Fire though. I don’t know if I’ve ever been remotely close to figuring out where a storyline like this is going. For all I know they’re baiting us one final time because we’re so easily conned. For example: me making this long ass post about a show I swore to never watch again after Brettsey broke up and Evan Hawkins died.

Krang Invasion

Ever since I saw the Rise movie, I always wanted to do the Clarity version, although due to certain circumstances I couldn't manage to do it, until now.

A little context:

When the Krang invasion began, Clarity was in the hidden city, along with April, Sunita and Cassandra. When they realized what was happening, they all went to help everyone and look for shelter.

19 years old:

When the girls began to shelter everyone who managed to escape from the Krang, they noticed that Clarity's attitude had changed, becoming more reserved and somewhat distant. They wanted to appoint her as the leader of that small resistance, but she refused, so April took that position, next to Cassandra.

Clarity did not want to take any risk, she did not like the idea of being responsible for all those lives, she only wished she could protect them as a soldier.

22 years old:

3 years passed since the invasion began. The reserves they had were beginning to run out, there was almost nothing. Clarity had taken the decision to go out to look for food, clothes or anything that could be useful. Before the search, she was attacked from behind by a Krang, wounding her in the abdomen and part of her left arm, causing her to lose it.

Just when she thought her life would end there, a certain turtle appeared to the rescue; it was Donatello. Seeing how serious her situation was, he took her to their base to heal her wounds. While Leo and Donnie healed her, Mikey and Raph went in search of April and all their resistance. They were not going to let them fight alone, when together they could be stronger.

35 years old

Since the two resistances were united, there was more hope of being able to defeat the Krang, although... that didn't make the pain and sadness disappear. Years ago, there was the loss of two important members of the resistance; Raphael Hamato and Cassandra Jones, who had sacrificed themselves to give the others time to escape and find a new base. Sadly, those most affected by the passing of both were Leo, Donnie, Mikey and Casey Jr. ....

Although Leo was in charge of the little orphan, Clarity was the one who took care of him when the boys had to go out or were busy. She did her best to keep everyone together, although it didn't always work, she had sworn to herself to keep Casey Jr. safe, and she did. Together with Donatello, they taught Casey how to fight and defend against the Krang over the years.

One day, when the base was under attack again, Clarity and Donnie were fighting the Krang while Leo, Mikey and April were pulling out all the survivors thanks to the portal Leo had opened. Seeing that everyone was safe, they waited for Donnie and Clarity so they could escape, but when both were on their way to the portal ..... Clarity had been wounded with a Krang weapon in her chest. Seeing this, Donnie tried to take her and save her, but they were more krangs getting closer.

With her last breath, Clarity declared her feelings to Donnie and that they would never give up, because she held out hope that this nightmare would one day end. Donnie did not want to leave her there, he kept in his mind that he could save her. Leo arrives to the two of them, noticing the scene, he knew that Clarity would not make it, but he was not going to let his twin brother stay there. Knowing that Donnie might hate him, he opens a portal under him and Donatello, transporting them to the new base... leaving Clarity in that terrible place.

🎶 We're coming after you, We're gonna solve that mysteryyyyy 🎶

No okay but I loooovvvveeeeee What's New so much oh my god. It's probably the iteration of Scooby I've seen the highest percentage of episodes of (excluding SDMI) and if I had to pick my favorite Scooby series of them all. More than any of the others really (although a little WAY), What's New was the Scooby of my childhood, and so many of its episodes are just total classics for me as well.

I think WNSD is very beloved by the Scooby collective (and for good reason) but honestly STILL is underrated in my mind, especially the early episodes. I absolutely adore some of the little "plot twists" of the WNSD era and how creative it could be within the confines of "the Scooby formula". I mentioned many of these in another post recently but having unexpected solutions/elements like "the monkey did it!" or "we caught the wrong guy! We need to go back!" every few episodes just blew my brain wide open as a child (especially the second one there. I'm STILL in shock on that one) and are underappreciated by scooby fandom. (Despite WNSD winning the favorite scooby series poll I did lol)

Being my favorite doesn't mean that What's New is perfect though. There are still some moments I don't like, or that, while useful for a joke, fall flat for me character-wise. One example I think I've talked about before is the scene where they split up differently and Fred is left alone searching for clues with Shaggy. The punchline of this is the idea that Fred and Shaggy just don't have anything in common to talk about, going along in awkward silence until Fred asks Shaggy if he 'saw the game last night' to which he says no and they continue on in awkward silence. For me, that's not my favorite joke because I do believe that Fred and Shaggy are good friends and DO have lots to talk about, and while not my favorite interaction between the two, I can still mesh it pretty easily into my own personal canon with a few simple Watsonian explanations. Ex: They were both overthinking it and didn't know what to say, Fred grabbed a conversation starter from his go to list (he's been working very hard on his social interaction skills, okay?! Only 3/4 of them are about nets/mysteries/the gang/the Mystery Machine!) and struck out big time.

No but as I was saying as much as I adore WNSD, nothing is perfect, and at times (especially in some movies) What's New also suffers from the WAY/TSDS cultural................. awkwardness that comes from the "white guy dressing up as native/cultural legend" plot line.

OH AND THE SOUNDTRACK. What's New rightly gets its due (lol) for having an absolutely killer theme song (and sequence too!!!!) but I think it should get extra points on top of that as well for the chase music in each episode. What's New easily has some of my favorite chase music (leading to some favorite chase sequences) which makes watching it an even better time (some of those songs are catchy!!!!!) And I just love the way it handles music in general. What's New really just finds creative ways to explore and make interesting all aspects of the process, and move between them subtly and infrequently enough that it doesn't feel forced or thrown at you, but as a genuine exploration of what can be done with Scooby by people who care about it. (And while we're talking about music?!?!?!?! THE HAUNTED MYSTERY MACHINE EPISODE???????? 🤯😵🥰💘)

To me, What's New is just a really good show that is kind of seen as being "simple" (plan lol. Sorry I keep doing that but I can't help myself) or basic but really is much more creative and complicated than it looks when closely examined. It's a series that I think gets a lot of love while at the same time still not getting enough for everything it accomplished. Also it has some of my favorite Scooby castings out there. I mean, COME ON! Casey Kasem Shaggy at the same time as Grey Griffin Daphne? With Frank Welker Fred AND Scooby along with MINDY COHN (<3333333333333333333) Velma? Don't get me STARTED.

Anyways I just have SO much love for this series all the time. All the time. 24/7. Hope that answers your question on how I feel about it

Oh, my God

Leon sacrificed for his family!? Raph was mentally controlled by the Kraang!? You saw that Casey Jones speaks in passing about Donnie but does not mention Raph in his diatribe about turtles in the future as if he did not know him; Said there are many things that can be said about the film and small facts that the characters could go unnoticed, such as the discussion of Casey and Leon, I'm sure those two did not tell anyone about death in the future.

I think that was a fundamental part of Leo deciding to sacrifice for his family.

Redemption? Sacrifice?

That's a good point, I think Leon feels responsible for what happened, he thinks it's his fault that all this happened, losing the key, that Raph was captured; Leo's change during the battle he had to have with his brother, seeing how everything he loves can be destroyed by his irresponsible actions, makes him see things from Raph's point of view, he sacrifices himself, but I don't think so I went through the city, partly yes; but the sacrifice he gives is for his family (including Casey) because he realized and accepted that they are a fundamental part of him being himself.

I could keep talking about this all day, it's my new TMNT movie, I saw the one from 2007, it just took it off the pedestal, I just wish they'd introduce Draxum and Cassandra more, even though the scene where Casey recognizes her and called "Mama", it's my favorite scene.

But if the movie made me cry in several scenes, it would be a good closure for the franchise, but we all know that we want a 3rd season.

I like this version of the Turtles, Raph specifically, from being a turtle with anger issues who loves his family but doesn't know how to express himself, always looking for the quick fight, to being a caring, protective brother who shows how much he loves. and he cares about his little brothers, I feel that if this franchise ends here, we will never see another Raphael himself, or another Leo or Mikey or Donnie as the series and the movie show us, I even love this Splinter more than the previous ones, the message that family is more important to him that he loves his children more than anything (that he sees April as his daughter), I really like this version.

This series marks something in my inner child, something that makes me feel very satisfied.

A (not soo teensy) headcanon about Matt and Casey I haven't talked about yet:

Something Matt and Casey really missed on the spaceship was rain. Stilwater and London both get over 100 days of rain and it's one of those things you don't realise you miss until it's gone.

Like, yeah, OK, everyone time jumps to Earth. The Saints go to sunny beaches, they play in the snow, they walk in the autumn breeze. So yes, they do end up out in the rain at times. But something is missing. It's that feeling when you're just laying in bed and the rain is beating down hard on the windows.

Ragnarok, however has a lot of lush forests, and while the exact process is unclear, it's hypothesised that forested regions generate more water vapour meaning more rainfall. So I think it's fair to say that the new planet sees a reasonable amount of rain.

In Matt and Casey's first house on their new planet, they would hear the rain on the windows and it was such a comfort. Missed, atmospheric, nostalgic. It sounded the nicest on the skylight above their dining table though.

So by the time two of three devastating alien attacks had occured, and they were building their new and most refined house, they put their bedroom on the top floor with four large roof windows. So when it's raining they can just cuddle up in bed at any time of day, and just listen to and watch the rain together.

About my sequel fic

So the plot of my sequel focuses on the third of the aforementioned alien attacks. The starting scene is the final scene of the penultimate chapter of the first fic, "An Introduction" (the bulk of that chapter focuses on Casey finally telling the remainder of the team her real name so that's the double meaning for that particular chapter) but from Matt's point of view.

This is a slight change in format; chapters will alternate between Matt and Casey's point of view throughout, with the beginning/end sections being told from various Saints' perspectives rather than the same person the chapter is told from as seen in Out Of Time. My working title is Out Of Focus.

This attack has a similar "attack them before they become important" theme as the first one, but in this both Casey and Matt are being targeted, as due to events in the first story, their names are pretty well-known throughout the universe.

The same "cannot encounter yourself" rules apply as well as Johnny not being able to travel back as it'll alert Zinyak, so the now pretty large team of Saints has to be divided between DC (Matt, Asha, Charlie, Ward, Riley, Jezebel), London (Casey, Shaundi, Pierce, Daniel, Charlie) and the ship (Kinzie, Johnny, Keith, Rhys, CID, Ben). These are just proposed teams and also I can't remember if I've remembered all the 2023 Saints but you get the picture 😅

Obviously as I am more of a romance writer than anything else, there is a focus on the fact FOUR couples are torn apart by this situation, and what is/was going on in their relationships prior to this. Matt and Casey are dealing with fertility issues, Pierce and Rhys are planning their wedding, Charlie and Ward are having some problems and this is practically a trial separation for them, and Kinzie and Riley will maybe find this brings them closer (I've not quite established where they are relationship wise which is why this is vague). I'm not opposed to some Shasha coming into play somewhere too... y'know I had Johnny make a joke about them in the last fic but now I'm actually thinking about it...?

Anyway there's a lot of things at play where Matt and Casey can't tell each others past selves they're together in case it prevents their relationship playing out as it does. I won't spoil all the subplots but yeah, I have a lot of thoughts. A vague overall idea. Much like the first one, I imagine I'll be in the mood to write one day and it'll just happen.

But because of the man who was running towards him shouting. Mobius. Because Mobius had seen in him more than a glorious purpose. Because even if it was for his personal interests, Mobius had needed him. Because Mobius had made him see that he could be a better version of himself. Because Loki was starting to believe it. So as he turned to Mobius who was running towards him he put everything he could into his eyes. Believe in me! Then, reluctantly, he turned away and went through the portal.

The cliché answer would be passion but the first one that comes to mind is making my/the characters happy.

Remember these are the people who complained about Tabitha having nothing to do or only interacting and caring for Jughead. The SECOND Tabi had an episode away from Jughead in the stands as a background character at a football game they were happy. Because the “threat” faded into background and they got to see Betty cringe at being near Jughead and dismiss his suggestions at help and called this “Bughead rising/sexual tension”. 

Their feigned concern about her integration into the canvas magically disappeared and they started putting out she should be paired with Reggie on the basis on both unattached at time and I can only presume...need to pair the minority characters together to keep in the background. Certainly not based on any deep interactions between them or common interests that they claim she and Jughead don’t have (they do) but magically didn’t matter with those two.

They initially said they LIKED Tabitha in the beginning (they didn’t) but now they don’t like her. Why? She is the same person they claimed they liked then so must have been equally boring right? Oh but right...then you were convinced she’d mammy the white kids back together clapping her hands like a trained seal. 

You all have endlessly tried to insist would be a leabian hookup with Toni or Cheryl or even Betty even though never has shown an interest sexually or romantically in anyone BUT Jughead. Another thing you condemn her for because it further reflects poorly on Betty. BTW she and Lili have NO chemistry you lunatics. Their scenes are painful and that is ALL on Lili who has chemistry with almost no one. If we are really being honest and not lying (which you all do) the person who struggles to create any sort of connection is Ms Reinhart. Can’t speak to current fixation you all have on a new entrant as haven’t watched last few episodes but of those on canvas that I KNOW only people not a complete wet blanket with are Cole, Casey, Madchen and sometimes Mads. And Cole is not what it was because clearly she can’t keep professional separated from personal.

You keep whining about Tabitha being center stage in the plot and being paired with other characters but then I thought that’s what you wanted when she just had scenes with Jug? Oh, but not really is it. What you wanted was her romantically with someone else. Not still a couple with Jughead being accepted by his social circle and unquestionably the new heroine of the show. If anything the show is further entrenching her into his life with these other characters because they feel they’ve solidly established Jabitha as a couple. You hate this.

You so badly thought this upcoming season would be more of violence and fighting between Jug and Tabi. We all remember the spider promo. Then you thought she would cheat (script leak). Then you thought she would be evil (instead it’s the whore of Babylon). Lastly you were practically begging the writers to have Percy kill her to end the season. No, no you all aren’t racist at all.

I cannot believe that Nora hasn’t scolded Derek yet. Why didn’t she say anything about him dying the whites pink, using the neighbours’ pool, or dismissing Casey? She should have said something; this is why Derek is the way he is.

(Also, Casey’s proposed system? Whites, colours, and delicates? We literally use that in my house of 6 people: there are three hampers by the bedrooms for lights, colours, and hots, and us girls have our own delicate loads that we’re responsible for. It works great and causes zero problems.)

Okay, so Emily is now Casey’s “best friend”. Is it because she has no other friends? (I’m not trying to be rude, just making a judgement call.)

And “muddle along”? That’s Nora admitting that things aren’t going super well; why aren’t the adults making more of an effort to get things organized? Will I find out before the end of the episode? Tune in to find out!

(And totally off topic, but I like that Casey wears a lot of pinks, purples, and pretty clothes. I like that she wears sweat pants around the house, but makes sure her makeup is decent (I know this is TV, but still). I just like that she cares about her appearance because, one, that’s very insecure teenage girl behaviour; and two, some girls really like looking pretty (I am one of them), and I like that (so far at least), no one has pointed it out as a flaw and it’s just okay. Like, she’s not overly made-up or making huge efforts, but she does try to look presentable, and, I dunno. I’m probably not wording it right, but it both fits her personality and is something I understand.)

Insight into the Venturi-life before the McDonalds entered their world. I can totally see why Edwin and George are happier and Derek is not. If I was a fifteen-year-old boy, I would also prefer messy tables and a take-out jug.

The more I learn about George, the more I wonder how the hell he became a lawyer. He’s kinda a dumbass. If George is easily distracted and unable to focus and is trying to raise 3 children by himself, Derek can do whatever he wants because George just doesn’t have time to notice. WOW. EPIPHANY.

EVERY SCENE WITH PAUL IS GOLD, I don’t know if him or Lizzie are my favourites. Watching his watch and going, “Huh, it must be late” and then Casey barging in with, “I am so sorry I’m late” I LOVE THEM BOTH SO MUCH.

Okay, so yes, Casey likes structure — but can we blame her??? Honestly, if this show was more of a drama and less of a comedy, I think it’d be so easy and so fulfilling to have Paul talk with her about the divorce and all the changes in her life, and how she overcompensates other aspects of her life to make up for all the things in her life she can’t control. (It’s also why I think as she gets older, and as she figures out a relationship with Derek, she would be able to go with the flow more, because she wouldn’t feel so off-balanced. Once she felt grounded and safe in her life and relationships, I think she could handle more flexibility and mess, but she’s never gonna be a “chill” person.)

I can also see that Derek kept George on task as a parent as much as Casey kept Nora on task, but his methodology is very different. ALSO!!! THEY FORGOT TO PICK UP LIZZIE AND EDWIN?!?! THOSE POOR CHILDREN. And Edwin knowing this was going to happen: what was the Venturi house like????

Casey’s blow-up at Nora is totally justified by the way — and don’t think I didn’t notice Nora saying, “You need to calm down.” Wow. Like, Casey is completely right; Nora isn’t taking the situation seriously. As soon as Edwin and Lizzie were left at school, Nora and George should have immediately starting thinking about how to fix things; and Marti playing with Casey’s stuff??? She could’ve gotten sick!!! THOSE ARE CHEMICALS. WHAT IF SHE SWALLOWED ANY OF IT; HOW COULD NORA JUST SAY, “She’s just a little kid.” NORA!!!

George’s parenting style is just... So... No???

HE JUST BARGED INTO HER ROOM AGAIN???? WHILE SHE’S ON THE PHONE??? (added to the tally) No wonder Marti thinks she can play with other people’s stuff; Derek thinks the whole world belongs to him.

Okay, that entire exchange is hilarious writing, but also: Derek. One: It’s not your pool!!!! And two: You have every right to feel objectified and uncomfortable and I feel so much better about that line in NWF when he complains about getting his bicep squeezed. Derek doesn’t like unwanted attention either, even though he’s a peacock when he does want it.

BLESS DEREK. He actually realizes he’s pushed George too far and immediately goes into “fix-it” mode, and thinks, “Casey.” HE THOUGHT OF CASEY BEFORE GEORGE DID. 

This episode is such an insight into the Venturis, and George and Derek’s relationship. They literally are more like friends than father-son, except one friend mostly mocks the other.

LIZZIE. LIZZIE. LIZZIE BAKING, OH BLESS HER HEART. I cannot; they’re gonna taste so bad, but her heart is so big.

And Derek and Casey fighting the whole time, not saying anything because they don’t wanna bother George, but pushing and shoving each other, gosh. I love it.

IS AMY (Derek’s date) WEARING THE SAME BUTTERFLY PIN AS CASEY WAS EARLIER THIS EPISODE??? SOMEONE CHECK FOR ME BECAUSE OH MY GOSH, THAT MEANS SOMETHING. AND she’s a reader??? Oh my gosh, I cannot. And she actually doesn’t have an issue helping Derek take care of the kids: this one is a keeper.

Also, Derek called her hot earlier... And she’s, like, not crazy hot. Like, not popular hot, or not what I anticipated seeing at all. THIS IS A WHOLE NEW INSIGHT INTO DEREK, OH MY GOSH. Again, I feel so justified by having him simp for Casey’s nerdiness. Wow.
