Kaiju Weeks in Review (September 10-30, 2023)
Tumblr media
I adore Godzilla Final Wars, but it's a movie with an identity crisis, unsure whether it wants to be headlining a Toho Champion Festival or mesmerizing American teenagers at a mid-aughts multiplex. @spacehunter-m's Final Wars 2004: The Year We Make Corn-Tack gives it a strong tug in the first direction, whittling the runtime down to 77 minutes and replacing most of the music and sound effects. She was inspired by Space Warriors 2000, of all things; as she put it, both films are "largely comprised of nonstop, monotonous action." As in that bizarro Ultraman compilation film, the kaiju trash-talk each other. It makes you wonder why Ryuhei Kitamura didn't at least bring back the speech bubbles from Godzilla vs. Gigan. Kaiju fan edits are rare, and this is in a class all by itself. Download it here.
Tumblr media
Shigeru Kayama's novelizations of Godzilla (1954) and Godzilla Raids Again are out—hopefully the first of many to come. My copy only arrived on Saturday, so I haven't had the chance to read the whole thing yet, but I've made it through Godzilla. It's interesting to see Kayama, who wrote the initial treatment, take another swing at the story after the film was finished. He puts back moments like Godzilla eating a cow and attacking a lighthouse, and is also more overt with the wartime allusions. There's an incredible moment where Dr. Yamane muses that studying Godzilla and learning his secrets could be Japan's way of redeeming itself after "caus[ing] a great deal of trouble to people throughout the world." Note that these are novella-length, so much less in-depth than the novelizations of American Godzilla films you might be used to (Godzilla Raids Again is less than 80 pages). The book ends with an afterword by translator Jeffrey Angles contextualizing the tales.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: War for Humanity continues to be a standout IDW miniseries. There's a new and very weird monster in the second issue, plus a no-nonsense Mothra (she tries to recruit Godzilla to fight Zoospora by shooting him in the back of the head and dragging him into the ocean in front of Minilla).
I've also got to mention the solicitation for another Godzilla Rivals installment, due December 20. Nola Pfau is writing, Megan Huang is illustrating.
Jen Onça is not excited to start her new, fast-paced fast-food career at Minilla Burger, but she'd much prefer a mundane day to the sudden return of Megalon! The monster brings destruction, trapping Jen in a forgotten lab deep beneath the restaurant with only the half-built form of Jet Jaguar to help her get out! She must repair the robotic defender to save herself and the city, but first she needs to escape the rubble trapping her in this tense adventure!
Tumblr media
Yuzo the Biggest Battle in Tokyo, Yoshikazu Ishii's follow-up to Attack of the Giant Teacher, has also been picked up by SRS Cinema. No release details yet. I can't really speak to the film either, since it screened at the same time as Yumiko Shaku's panel at G-Fest, but as you can see from the poster, it's set during the pandemic.
Tumblr media
The GAMERA -Rebirth- Gyaos has joined Godzilla Battle Line as an unusual sort of swarm unit. Your first summon of the match calls forth two sub-adults, and by the fifth summon you're sending out two sub-adults and three adults, still for four energy. They're probably the best swarm in the game, though still highly vulnerable to AOE units like Godzilla '01. I'm having fun with them in the Challenge Battles.
Tumblr media
Notzilla, one of the sharpest kaiju comedies out there, is unexpectedly getting the graphic novel treatment. Mitch Teemley is adapting his own screenplay, with art by Zumart Putra. The comic is already finished, although I'm not clear on how folks who didn't back the Kickstarter (which wrapped on September 11) will get it. Useless trivia: the terrific cover above (one of four) is by Ben Dunn, who wrote the How to Draw Manga book I poured over in middle school.
Tumblr media
After Troll shattered Netflix streaming records (according to Netflix), it's not super surprising that the company wants a sequel. Priority one: coming up with a title that's not Troll 2. Screenwriter Espen Aukan and director Roar Uthaug will both return.
Tumblr media
Toy highlights of the past few weeks:
After confusing everyone by teasing its silhouette the day before April Fools', Tamashii has fully unveiled an S.H.Monsterarts Godzilla '72, a rare Showa figure from the line. It comes with two heads, one of them bloodied (see above). Due at the end of February.
After finally running out of ways to repaint their mold of Hedorah's Perfect Stage, Bandai is making a Movie Monster Series figure of the kaiju's Landing Stage. A Godzilla Store exclusive, it'll be released October 25.
After over two years, Funko is releasing a trio of Godzilla Singular Point Pops. Hopefully they go all-out with this show—it's not like there's any other plausible way for a Satomi Kanahara figure to exist.

sorry i cannot stop thinking about sonoi and tarou being showa coded because the further i get into showa rider the more right it is... apollo geist fucking changed something and while there were like the commanders in 1971 and V3 they were missing the homoerotic tension. which kind of makes sense. i don't think that 1971 rider could have handled someone having a hateboner for hongo (hayato MAYBE if he had been at the helm towards the end) and i think if kazami had some kind of little rendezvous before riderman it would have lessened yuki's impact. now we're diving more into the behind the scenes of what things are like at these evil organizations and just how much brainspace their rivals take up in their mind? both titan and apollo geist being brought back to life and tied to their rivals: apollo geist needing part of X to continue living and titan being brought back to life by shigeru's blood? whatever the fuck is going on with shadow joining black satan and helping shigeru out of several tough spots so that he can be the one to deal the finishing blow? like it's nuts. and this is all shit sonoi and tarou do or would do? something about the tension... as much as i love and appreciate when the gay shit is canon (i'll admit to having cried watching mac finds his pride or at the bubbline kiss i'll say it i'm not a coward) there's something fantastic about when it's not and when it's messy and confusing and people are having big feelings they don't know what to do with and it's like Well i guess i'll just devote every second of my life to fighting you because i don't know what this feeling is or why i want to see you so bad and i have to work through it somehow. winning at having a crush is something normal to want and possible to accomplish and you can do it by killing them. it's like i'm there pining along with you brother
Well Anyway i still think everyone should watch showa rider because it's fun but also dude holy shit what the fuck is going on. you gotta check this shit out

headcanons for Palletshipping?
Also what is Gary's hair routine?
Ooooo! I still need to do an official post buuuut let me post some:
Ash’s Japanese name is Satoshi while Gary’s is Shigeru. When they were younger they couldn’t pronounce the “sh” so they called each other SatoCHI and CHIgeru. They still do now at times.
Ash is pan and Gary is gay. Ash always gave me the kind of vibe that he loves everybody.
Ash didn’t really know about stigmas with guys dating. He was just like “I like Gary” and no internal crisis.
Gary on the other hand was the opposite. Took him a looooong time to be fully open.
Dated in secret because of it and because they wanted to slowly get a feel for each other first.
Ash helped Gary open up, but since Ash was one of the causes of him hiding his emotions, it took years.
Ash calls Gary when he has time - even remembering to call him more-so than his mother. Gary berates him on that to his chagrin.
Pikachu and Umbreon are best friends and become a couple.
Gary sends Ash gifts when he knows which town Ash is in.
Ash sends Gary handwritten notes since while Gary likes material possessions, he appreciates a heartfelt gift from someone more.
Brock knew all along.
There was kind of a confession at the lake during the Silver Conference under the full moon but Ash didn’t get it. (Canon! Kinda.)
Gary was slowly courting Ash unknowingly then when he realized he freaked and stopped.
Ash eventually realized (since he likes him and took notice of him acting out of character) and bluntly asks him out.
Gary got embarrassed and wouldn’t do anything for several minutes but then was like “Weellll I see you’ve got taste Ashy-boy and you look cute today so I’ll say yesss.”
On their dates they catch up and actually talk. And I mean talk. Not just about pokemon - family, friends, adventures, everything good and bad.
Gary doesn’t feel close to his grandfather so he was anxious to tell him. Ash was all for telling his mom. Ash wanted to know if Gary wanted to tell her first but Gary said it would be best if they told them both together.
Gary wanted to tell them when they were both established in their careers but did it earlier for Ash - at about 18yrs old.
They started dating…oh gosh…I’ll just say end of Sinnoh after the league. I headcanon Sinnoh they’re both 15.
Ash was so out of sorts for his first boyfriend that he was out of it the entire Unova arc.
Gary didn’t visit home during that time since he was afraid someone would hazard a guess. Sometimes people can just tell.
Unfortunately, that got both their guardians concerned and they had to fib. But they laughed to each other about it and that’s when they had serious talks and not just standard ones.
Ash would go to the end of the region in a corner city to get a specific item for Gary that he thought he would like. Gary would have it specially made and tailored to perfection before he gives his to Ash.
When they’re older, they’d live together. But the house would usually be empty since they both travel for their careers.
They’d travel together. (I swear to god anipoke that was perfect why-)
They’d adopt three kids. Twin boy toddlers and a baby girl three years younger. (Possibly adopt another little girl to make it even. She would be several years younger than the first girl.) Boys will have brown hair and brown eyes and the first girl have black hair and green eyes. The second girl will have red hair and blue eyes.
Pikachu and Umbreon have babies. I don’t know how many.
They still bicker and tease each other although now it’s all in good fun. They’re still rivals at heart.
Idk if I should do NSFW or not…maybe a separate post.
I know I have more this is just all I can think of at the moment.
I don’t know much about hair. x_x But I’ll give you headcanons:
Used to wash it every day
Freaked out when someone told him you’re not supposed to wash it every day
Took a long time to get used to not doing it
But when he does he goes all out
Shampoo, conditioner, styles it juuuust right, hair spray, mousse, depends on the day
He likes how it can look spiky but still feel soft
Thanks for the ask! :) @hissingaspinthegrass

(Post-JN Ash anon) They have to show it, no way you dump a big character like Gary in this and proceed not to give him some type of conclusion also. (And Chloe, if her Eevee ends up being Gen 9 promo, I think it'll be another factor for both Goh and Ash; as well as her finally starting a traveling journey by herself.) Hmm, I have a slight idea of who it could possibly be, but I need see more details in the incoming months from both Anipoke and S/V before drawing conclusions.
Whoops, you understood me wrong, I meant that the next series goal (or whether JN actually is multi-gen and climax previews are just messing with me) wouldn't be hinted or be clear til gen 9 begins. Ofc all character arcs should conclude before it, if they intend to end JN this year. But we'll see. EDIT: WAIT YOU MEANT PM NOT SHOWN shsskskks weeeeeeeeelll yeeh, I think Shigeru's character arc can be finished without showing it? :'D
I do hope Shigeru doesn't become a Gou-only character-driver because oh ffs I have hated Shigeru being his rival since the start because it feels the kind of "i'mma write MY dream scenario where I get to be rivals with Satoshi's iconic rival and repeat similar behavior as he did with him and be the new version" cough cough, sorry, I have strong feelings about this. I never liked this kind of storytelling.
And man. I'll be so glad if Koharu will promote new eeveelution. Or end up researching eeveelutions because of this. I just want her eeveelution journey to actually build up to something unique and not just.... not evolve. Koharu does nothing with g-max. So why promote it through her? AND THIS LATE???
Ahem.
Oh? Well, if your idea starts to hold ground, feel free to share, I'll be interested to hear about it!

Orange League, Episode 35 - Back in Pallet Town
Ash returns home with -1 Brock but +1 Tracey in tow. But that's okay because Brock's here anyway. He made his choice to remain on Daidai/Valencia Island and study under Professor Uchikido/Ivy, but then something happened. He refuses to elaborate, but it's pretty clear from Brock's tendencies that he made a pass and got fired. Misty even says as much.
So, rather than actually. Like. Go home? He came to Pallet Town and has been doing housekeeping for Delia ever since.
You know that thing in RPGs where, like, you have a party limit. And for any characters not currently in your party, there will just be this designated social area where they can hang out and wait to be selected? I guess Ash's house is the social hub for inactive party members. That makes sense.
Ash also gets to show off his trophy to his mom, giving us some truly bizarre characterization for her. Delia's been a bit of an odd duck; She's presented in a positive light but is rarely supportive of her son. It's been suggested that she doesn't want him to be off on his Pokemon journey, and expected him to fail and come home like most Trainers do. But she was also the one pressuring him to live up to his family legacy, so I don't know.
When Ash shows her the trophy, she plays it off in the most heartbreaking way imaginable. Due to its shape, she mistakes it for a dumbbell that he bought to replace her missing one. She snatches it from his hands and goes off to exercise with it, giving him none of the validation or appreciation he was seeking. Ash is left crushed by his mom's complete disinterest in his victory.
But as soon as he's gone, she polishes the trophy, displays it in a place of honor, and just stands there smiling at it. She is proud of Ash. She loves her son, she fully recognizes what an accomplishment this is, and she's so happy for him. She just. Can't seem to bring herself to communicate that pride and love to him, and so ends up hurting him all the same.
What a complicated character for someone with such a minor role in the story. Kinda puts a new spin on her whole "How dare you save the world!?" thing in Lugia's Explosive Birth/Power of One, too.
Speaking of which, Ash finally turns over the GS Ball to Oak, since he forgot to do that in the movie. Can't have important plot points happening in optional side media, after all.
But there's one other reunion waiting for Ash here. One last bit of business before we finally wrap up Kanto and officially begin Pokemon Gold/Silver. At long last, it's time for Ash to have his final boss Rival Battle with Shigeru/Gary, the anime version of Blue.

Listen. Shigeru has been visiting his hometown and know every pokemon Satoshi has (the implications are right there!) and remembered them.
That means, Shigeru must have heard all about Satoshi’s adventures and stay in other regions if him provoking Go on purpose says otherwise. That and he also seemed to watch Satoshi’s battle too (has it been shown that Shigeru watch Satoshi’s match with Shinji in Sinnoh in the anime?).
He has been supporting him from afar. And listening to stories of Satoshi’s adventures and current whereabouts/activities. Shigeru has been keeping up and perhaps even feel a little envious that Go got to travel around the world with Satoshi.
And you know that little comment? “I’m saying you’re not qualified to be Satoshi’s buddy.”
Shigeru stating that in order to become a suitable buddy, Go has to be a good trainer as he is; means that deep down he wanted Satoshi to have someone who is capable of handling any situations and knows how to fight when the situation comes.
He wanted the best for Satoshi. Since Satoshi is very important to him.
There is a double meaning there and the animators purposely made Shigeru placed his hand on his hair while having this hold back expression.
Remember. Shigeru always has difficulty in been honest with his feelings. And Satoshi pointed that out by the end of the episode.
And you know what? Satoshi knows this and accepts that side of him. He even has this fond expression on his face because he knows Shigeru means well and not once, did Satoshi tried to defend Go and been easily riled up just by Shigeru’s words alone like he did in the past.
The hand caress by the end speaks volume. Not only it’s a promise but it has a lot of meanings behind it. And all of them means one thing, mutual love.

Miyagi Setter Squad Responding to “I Love You”
I can’t condition because I sprained my ankle again so here you guys go. Also I’m so sorry for the oddly specific name but if you want the other setters lmk 😭 I’ll do them later I’m too tired. ⚠️SPOILERS FOR SEASON 2 ⚠️
Oikawa Tooru
Tumblr media
You were over at his house to study and maybe pass around a volleyball for a couple hours.
It was a pretty peaceful setting, you were splayed out on the floor looking at the ceiling
And he was on his computer doing god-knows-what.
It definitely wasn’t homework-
The silence is destroyed by your phone buzzing.
Your ride was here.
So you pick up your stuff, and you’re just about to walk out the door when it slips out.
“I love you, bye!”
This smooth fuck will pretend to be totally chill on the outside.
But on the inside he’s probably exploding.
He has seen this in movies, read it in books, seen it told to other people.
A couple of people have even said it to him.
(Even though he had no idea why because he had only known them on a last name basis for thirty seconds.)
So he knew alllll about it and exactly how to respond.
But...He didn’t execute as well as he wanted to.
So he ends up giving you some weird ass eyes as his whole face flushes.
“I love you tOo, Y/n.”
You don’t know whether to laugh at him or just leave
But you’re grinning the whole way home.
Yahaba Shigeru
Tumblr media
‘Yahaba does not get annoyed at much’
Lies. He gets annoyed at so much that he thinks he might have some repressed anger issues.
The butt naked screaming in the bath after losing to Karasuno helped him come to that conclusion.
But not much actually sets him off.
In other words, he’s not slamming anyone against the wall unless it’s really fucking important.
Or, nowadays, when someone does something to cross you.
Now, you did not know that Yahaba was capable of throwing hands until today.
Because most of his wounds were dealt out verbally.
However, you figured the guy that stole your gym clothes deserved it.
You were just planning to leave it alone, but there he was.
Off campus.
Tackling this random dude.
The fight lasts about thirty seconds before you can run into certain death and break it the fuck up before someone goes to jail.
The dude has a bloody nose already and he listens to you and steps back.
“Apologize.”
He mumbles out a sorry before stalking away.
Yahaba is looking way too pleased with himself.
“That’s assault.”
“That’s chivalry.”
“Shigeru, I love you, but don’t fucking do that again.”
He mumbled a response back. “Yeah yeah I won’t. I love you too.”
It will probably take him at least an hour for that to hit-
Kageyama Tobio
Tumblr media
He doesn’t have a very affectionate family, so that phrase has probably only been used sparingly around him.
But he has been silently willing you to say it to him for a while.
He’s already on top of the world when he beats Aoba Johsai.
You are so proud of him for finally taking down his rival.
When that final point is scored, you’re going crazy in the stands with Yachi, Saeko, and Shimada.
It was the most excited you had seen him in a long time.
He achieved his goal! He was now the best setter in the prefecture.
Not that he wasn’t before, obviously 🙄
But you’re sitting on the bus with him after they win, and it’s quiet.
Kageyama’s happy, you’re happy, and there’s almost no one on the bus.
You rest your head on your shoulder.
“I’m so proud of you. I love you so much, Tobio.”
*bang bang there goes your HEAAAAART*
On the outside he gets that wobbly look on his face, but on the inside he’s like
TWO IN ONE DAY?!
You’ve just been watching him smile at the bus driver for twenty seconds before he snaps out of it.
“Ah-I love you too, Y/n.”
You didn’t expect him to be so excited about that.
It was the sweetest thing ever.
Sugawara Koushi
Tumblr media
It was after he came up to you and told you that he would no longer be in Karasuno’s starting lineup.
And at first you’re like.
“Bull-fucking-shit Koushi, what do you mean you’re not starting?”
He explains that a new first year setter had arrived with much better technique.
And that the coach had sat him down and explained that to him.
And that he knew that Kageyama was better and that he would be supporting the team from the bench.
You can tell his heart is breaking with every second he tells you this.
So you need to shut him up. Getting mad at the coach wouldn’t help.
You start telling him all the things he can do to still be a significant player.
He could stat games, keep a notebook, make hand signals, paint the notebook-
You can tell he’s feeling much better about himself by the end of your talk.
You pick your next words very carefully.
“You’re gonna have a great season, trust me. I love you, okay?”
Alllll the color just drains from both of your faces.
He’s like “yeah-wait. You love me?”
You rethinking your life decisions: “Yeah?”
“I love you too.”
“...Good.”
“Good.”
Shirabu Kenjirou
Tumblr media
MotherfUCKER-
Well, he’s flustered, he’ll give you that.
But you’re not living that one down anytime soon.
You were on your way to school, making fun of stereotypical romance mangas.
“Sh-sh-shirabu-kun!! I guess you have to get to class now...😞🥺💞🌸”
“...we’ll see 😶”
“OHHHHHMYGOSH💞💞💞💞🌸🌸🥺”
By this time, you’re on campus, getting weird stares.
Past, single Shirabu would have given a shit.
But he only had a couple more minutes of making fun of people with you before he had to go to his classes.
Stupid 4.0
So now, you’re just pointing out random things that the horses were doing.
One of them kicked its own shit, and both of you lost it.
You guys were folded in half until coach Washijo came up behind you, and ordered you both to get to class.
As soon as he was out of earshot, you guys started laughing again.
“Well, I don’t wanna be taken out of the starting lineup, so let’s get to class.”
“Okay, love you.”
Oh shit. You did not mean to say that. For Christ’s sake, it had only been a month.
He looks like he’s seen Goshiki fall down the stairs. Almost triumphant.
“I love you too, Y/n. Now go attend to that math grade of yours.”
“Shut the hell up :)”
Semi Eita
Tumblr media
Was very well planned out and very thought through.
It was ✨Valentine’s Day✨
And you had it written down in a card because you were pussying out you were a little nervous.
Plus, you could always brush it off and pretend like writing it down wasn’t as big of a deal as saying it.
On the other end, Semi was also planning to tell you.
Like, he was sure you already knew.
And he was sure he was making it into a bigger deal than it should have been.
But whatever, Semi’s never been one to do things halfway anyhow.
He just wasn’t obvious about it.
So, Shiratorizawa was just g l i t t e r i n g that morning.
Which was why you both were currently at a cafe, very far away from it.
This had also been planned, because his coach would not like it very much if he knew he didn’t have the Flu.
So you guys are laughing, talking, awkwardly holding hands over the table.
It’s so obvious that both of you are nervous.
And Semi’s like “wHats wRoNg bAbY?”
As if he’s not in the exact same situation.
So you just hand him the card and the gift you got him for Valentine’s Day and he opens it up.
And you’re basically ready to melt into the floor when he puts the card down.
“You love me huh?”
No answer.
“Well, I love y o u t o o.”
He got so quiet at the end, but the words were finally said, and you were both satisfied.

Kamen Rider Stronger is arguably where the franchise is starting to run on fumes a bit, much like X. After Amazon proved to be a very sharp swing towards something different, Stronger very much returned to the set-up of a remodelled human operated on by not-Shocker who then turns around and fights against them. There are differences in the set-up and execution of it all but that same basic, classic story remains there; and especially as someone who had watched every episode of Kamen Rider in a row before now, it could feel a bit old hat.
But damn if I didn’t have a good time.
To begin with I don’t want to act like that little paragraph there is to say Stronger is a bad, uncreative show; far from it -- it’s just that these fundamental flaws do seek to undermine it much as it did with X, but it plays around with things and introduces enough interesting elements to let it stand out. A big thing right off the bat is that there is no fixed setting; no home base for Shigeru Jo and friends to go back to -- he and Yuriko are travellers on the road with Tachibana following after them, and that alone lends a lot of credence to how cool and mysterious their whole vibe are and inspires a lot of imagination. Tackle’s existence to begin with is great; even if she is just a sidekick let down by many misogynistic traits of the time, she stands out as a fun female hero for girls to look up to and for a unique dynamic to develop. When it comes to villains, Titan strikes a very cool, intimidating businessman impression while General Shadow picks up where X’s Apollo Geist left off as a thrilling rival to our hero -- and then when Titan comes back the two complete each other to kick off Stronger’s wonderful Villain Bickering where generals simply refuse to get along for a second, and that carries the enjoyment of so many episodes.
Once Black Satan is taken care of however, enter the Delza Empire; which takes the best traits of Titan and General Shadow’s bickering and applies it to the entire faction, enthusing the show with not just a lot of fun but a great threat as well. Delza’s motws are generals who are recurring characters throughout this stretch of the show as well, and combined with that bickering makes for a super unique organisation which we hadn’t yet seen in Showa Rider -- not to mention they’re so threatening that Stronger’s first victories against them only really arise due to their fighting amongst each other! It’s just so much fun.
And that’s about how I’d sum up Stronger -- fun. It’s a fun show even if a bit light on theming beyond the first few episodes, and Shigeru and Yuriko are just likable cool protagonists with Tachibana a fun stooge. It even sees fit to ramp that up at the end with a whole celebration of all 7 Kamen Riders up until this point -- because make no mistake, this is the end. For 4 years Kamen Rider would go off the air, and this is the last real appearance of Tachibana Tobei. It’s a real end to an era here and they wanted to go out in a blaze of glory; which I think they succeeded at really well. It might not mean a lot if you haven’t watched at least one of these past shows, but for me who was watching all 5 in order these past 6 months; it was a real treat and I’m glad I stuck with it. Kamen Rider Stronger was a fun time and one I can recommend to anyone looking for more Showa cheese in their life.

IN DEFENSE OF THE ORANGE ISLANDS (PT. 3)
If you want to read part 1 and/or part 2, here they are.
The Orange League’s Gym Leaders were different from normal Gym Leaders: they put some very unique fights on, two out of four even without an actual battle. These trials were meant to make the trainers work with their Pokémon, to sharpen their minds, to make them experience new things (the last badge, for example, was the first tag battle we ever saw in the Pokémon anime).
Satoshi (Ash) did all of that.
Of course, it doesn’t mean that he became this great strategist all at once, or that every gym battle made him change his way of battling: he adapted his attitude and style to the task that was demanded. Sometimes he won in very funny ways, sometimes he was helped, either way he put all of himself into the fights and managed to get through them. I really cannot say that he didn’t deserve any of the badges he got. He worked hard and the results were shown (and none of the badges was for fucking free, as some of the Indigo League).
Tumblr media
I particularly enjoyed his last battle, because it demonstrated that not only Satoshi was going through a growth-process, but so were his Pokémon: seeing Pikachu and Lizardon (Charizard) get along with each other and trusting each other in the middle of a fight was amazing; one being the mainly partner of his trainer, always off to defend and protect him, and the other being the prodigal son of the squad, it was nice to see some good teamworking between them. It was also the first official battle in which Lizardon actually listened to Satoshi (excluding the battle against Katsura (Blaine), but it listened to Satoshi back then only because he wanted to fight Boober (Magmar) and continued to ignore him after it won), so that’s pretty satysfing to see as well.
Tumblr media
But something else was necessary to prove Satoshi that he actually learned a great deal through the islands he visited. And what’s a better proof than a god damn league victory? Now, I know that the battle against Yuuji (Drake) wasn’t this great, but the anime had still a lot of work to do in this matter. At the very least, it showed us the first six vs six Pokémon battle in the entire Pokémon anime! And damn, it was captivating! Satoshi even used his Kentauros (Tauros) since his Kabigon (Snorlax) was asleep — lmao. He was helped by his friends way less than he had been in the Indigo League, he really showed us his worth defeating a strong opponent.
I feel like Satoshi needed this experience after the Indigo League: knowing to be able to win, knowing to be capable of standing out and put on some amazing battles, knowing to be worth of being called a trainer and being respected by his Pokémon (he still has a lot of work to do with Kabigon though lol); all of this was necessary and so welcomed I almost cried to see him that happy for his victory.
Tumblr media
Something else I absolutely adored about this season is the fact that, yeah, Satoshi wins and everything, but he also understands the it isn’t enough. It’s good, sure, but he can, he must do more and do better.
And who makes him realize that? Who could possibly make him realize that, other then the greatest asshole rival before Shinji (Paul) was yet to arrive? Yes, of course: Shigeru (Gary).
Now, I have mixed feelings about Shigeru. Do I like him? Not sure. Do I see his worth as a character and as a trainer? Sure. Do I have a crush on him? Absolutely fucking sure, since I was 10 years old — but that’s a story for another time.
What I really don’t like about him is how he makes Satoshi feel. As I previously stated, I love Satoshi, despite everything. I get so damn mad when someone puts him down with no reason and Shigeru mocked him from the first fucking second, while Satoshi only wanted to make friends with him. From that moment on, he never once has been kind toward him, even though there were a couple of situations in which Satoshi proved him his worth.
I thought that Episode 63 (トキワジム! さいごのバッジ! Tokiwa Gym! The Last Badge!) was going to be a fresh start for the two of them, since what happened at the end, but clearly I was mistaken, since he continued to be a jerk all along, Indigo League included.
I cannot avoid looking at him differently though, since that episode, because it’s clear that he can brag all he wants about being so much better than Satoshi, but in the end he actually admires him.

But the turning point for their relationships and his character comes in Episode 117 and Episode 118 (かえってきたマサラタウン! Return to Masara Town! / ライバルたいけつ! サトシVSシゲル!! Rival Showdown! Satoshi vs. Shigeru!!). In the first episode, here comes Shigeru to save the day after Satoshi and co have been trapped by Rocket-dan (Team Rocket); after that, Okido (Oak), Kasumi (Misty) and Takeshi (Brock) start talking about how amazing Shigeru is and has become and Satoshi, as always, gets jelaous and needy for attention, so he tells Shigeru that he has won the Orange League and starts bragging. Shigeru then congratulates but also tells him something like, Yeah, great, but apparently this win wasn’t enough against Rocket-dan, was it?. Therefore Satoshi complains that he did better in the Indigo League than Shigeru did and Shigeru replies that now he’s a completely different person from back then. So Satoshi challenges him to a battle and he accepts.
Besides, something else I noticed is how, since he lost the League, he became more and more aware of his limits and his weeknesses as a trainer. When his grandfather greets him and thanks him for saving them, he replies that it’s all Nidoqueen’s credit and that he still has a lot of work to do. That’s, like, the most humble thing he’s ever said since Episode 1. And it’s refreshing, because he would have never said anything like that at the start of his journey. He grew up.
So, I guess that’s what he wants Satoshi to understand as well: stop being such a child and thinking that winning once is enough for you to be a great trainer: it isn’t. Which he proves by defeating him in Episode 118.
That’s why when Satoshi hears that Shigeru decided to go to Johto, he wants to do the same. Despite being an hell of a jerk, Shigeru really is capable of inspiring Satoshi and pushing him forward.

That’s pretty much it for part three. There are going to be, at the very least, other two parts.

Making a Home Ch. 16
Kita Shinsuke had experienced a lot in life. He had been raised with his grandmother, a loving foster parent and for some time he followed in her foot steps before finding his own path. He thought his foster care license had expired before getting a call at three am with two small boys thrust into his arms. Miya Osamu and Atsumu, from broken homes but still fighting. Thirty days before his license expires. Thirty days to make a choice, keep the boys or let them be separated into different homes. Thirty days to fall in love with them.
Words: 4k
Relationships: Gen
Warnings: Mention of past child abuse, non-graphic abuse
Not from Kita, but it is mentioned. I will post any warnings before any panic attacks or vague descriptions of abuse.
Read below or on AO3
This week is Rintaro, Hitoshi, and Akagi’s POV:
Suna Rintaro wasn’t the biggest fan of people. He didn’t really have a lot of experience with them as it was, and when he did they tended to just rub him the wrong way.
If he went with his parents to events he had to deal with countless adults asking if he was as smart as his parents, if he was going to be doctors like them, could he even read? If he said yes he was as smart as them, no he wasn’t going to be a doctor because they never seemed happy, and ‘I’m six not three, do you know how to read?’ Then he had to deal with two hours of admonishments about pride instead of leaving him alone.
On the other hand, the other kids at school felt like screaming babies. Rintaro already knew how to write his name in Katakana, Kanji, and Hiragana, and yet they just went over it every single day. The other kids were still scratching out the characters slowly as if they’d never read anything before and Rintaro was bored.
Not to mention how often he had to deal with laughter when he used bigger words and the teachers would ask if he actually knew what they meant. Why would he use it if he didn’t know what it meant?
Hitoshi, atleast, seemed to catch on quickly to what Rintaro was saying. He could actually talk and didn’t care if Rintaro said too many big words. Plus he didn’t seem to care if Rintaro wanted to drag him around town trying new things.
Hitoshi did have a strange crush on Matsukawa Shinji that Rintaro just couldn’t understand. Shinji was nice but… boring. Shigeru was much more interesting, he could not only keep up with Rintaro in class but also wouldn’t cry if Rintaro punched him. What more could someone want in a rival?
Overall, Rintaro didn’t like people and liked having a single friend and a single enemy and not having to worry about anything else.
Then he met the Miya twins.
He wasn’t sure about Atsumu, he seemed angry and Rintaro didn’t really think that was worth dealing with. He was nice enough when talking though, and he was nice to Hitoshi so Rintaro couldn’t write him off just yet. If he was good enough for Hitoshi to like then Rintaro could put up with some anger issues.
Osamu though, was interesting. He seemed quiet like Hitoshi at first, until Rintaro started poking and prodding with a few quick words about his brother. Instantly he’d started to puff up like an angry bird before Rintaro had added that they could be friends. The bewilderment in his eyes was well worth risking getting punched, in Rintaro’s opinion.
Osamu had settled a lot faster into ‘friendship’ then Rintaro had expected. Most of the other kids still wanted to punch him even after nine months of school, but Osamu genuinely seemed to want to be friends. Even after Rintaro had scared him by fighting with Shigeru.
Secretly, guilt rolled in his stomach about that. He still didn’t understand why Osamu had looked so shaken when Ito-sensei came over to yell at them, it wasn’t like adults didn’t yell all the time. Yet Osamu looked seconds away from tears even after lunch ended and he’d held onto his brother the entire way, only cheering up a little when Shinji started talking to him quietly.
“Hey… Don’t be mean to Osamu or Atsumu…” Rintaro was shaken from his thoughts by Shigeru’s voice, so much softer than he’d ever heard. His rival’s eyes were pointed directly at his brother, looking almost sad.
“Why the hell would-” Rintaro started, anger filling his chest. He wasn’t like his parents, he didn’t just bully people for being sad.
A hand smacked his chest, narrowly avoiding Hitoshi who squeaked quietly before trying to square his shoulders in case another fist fight broke out.
“I’m serious! He’s not like you, okay?” Shigeru hissed, finally turning to look at him. “He’s like me… He’s a foster kid, the other kids are going to find out soon and they’re gonna be mean, real mean. Remember my first week? Me and Shinji didn’t tell anyone but they found out and kept pickin’ on him until I punched ‘em. They’re gonna find out, and I don’t care how long we’ve been friends. If you bully them I’ll punch you too.”
Rintaro froze, glancing over at the two twins talking with Shinji and then back to the silver haired one who had him stuck in the middle of the hall. How long had he and Shigeru been friends? Were they seriously adopted?
After a second, Rintaro realized he was an idiot for not noticing sooner, but it wasn’t like he listened to the other kids and their gossip anyways.
“I’m not going to say anything… I don’t care about that.” Rintaro insisted, glaring back at Shigeru until the other kid finally dropped his hand. “Who cares if they’re adopted? Atleast that means their parents want them.”
“... Sorry, Rin.” Shigeru muttered, gently punching his shoulder with a half smile. Rintaro punched him back and the smile immediately brightened, seconds before an actual blow bounced off his arm and the silver haired rat took off.
Hitoshi immediately wrapped his arms around Rintaro’s left arm, keeping him from running after Shigeru.
“Why’dya always gotta fight with him?” Hitoshi whined, blinking up at him when Rintaro glowered at him. Hitoshi had long since learned that while Rintaro would fight Shigeru any day of the week, he wouldn’t hit anyone else. Which sucked, because now he didn’t care about putting himself between them and Rintaro couldn’t do anything.
“He punched me?” Rintaro whined right back, letting himself be dragged towards the classroom again. “Besides, he likes it.”
“.... Just… Don’t hurt him.” Hitoshi said, squeaking when Rintaro stopped and looked at him with a scrunched up face.
“Ew, don’t tell me you… like Shigeru? Atleast Shinji's pretty, Shigeru’s like… like… a ungly mean creampuff.”
“Wha- No!” Hitoshi shook his head, looking embarrassed. “I just… Rin-kun… I… Papa hit mama and she left. And if Shigeru leaves then you’re going to be really upset and I’m going to be upset and then I’m going to cry and then Neesan will tell me to shut up and then you’re going to be angry and then I’m going to cry again and-”
“Hitoshi, breathe.” Rintaro reached forward in a panic, smooshing Hitoshi’s cheeks together and the smaller child sucked in a loud breath and let it out again. Directly into Rintaro’s face.
“Ewww, you’re gross… And you didn’t brush your teeth this morning. I can smell nachos from yesterday.” Rintaro pressed his cheeks again. “I won’t hurt Shigeru. Pinky promise.”
He held out his hand and Hitoshi watched him, face still red from his momentary panic before he nodded, reaching and curling their pinkies together.
“Hey! Slowpokes, are ya comin’?” Shigeru’s face came from the class, glancing up at the clock across the room. “You’re going to be late.”
“Don’t close the door!” Hitoshi and Rintaro yelled, running at the room as the bell rang.
“Hey, Osamu,” Rintaro said quietly, offering Shigeru the scissors.
They were separated into groups and Atsumu, Hitoshi, and Shinji had been banished to the other side of the room after Shinji and Shigeru had started to giggle together too loudly. Thankfully both Atsumu and Hitoshi seemed fine with it, beyond a few eyerolls from Atsumu. Rintaro was worried Atsumu or Osamu were going to start crying at being separated again but whatever Shinji had said to them after lunch had apparently helped.
“Mm?” Osamu looked up from his paper, a shredded piece of paper stuck to his cheek. His face was rather blank when his brother wasn’t around, which Rintaro found strangely comforting. Finally he wasn’t the only one with a ‘dead face’ as his mother called it.
“What’s it like bein’ wanted? Y’know by your parents? My parents don’t want me at all, but if you’re adopted, they chose ya right- Ow!” Rintaro spun to glower at Shigeru, whose foot was still against his leg. Shigeru’s face was scrunched up in anger as he glared back, opening his mouth probably to tell Rintaro off.
“I wouldn’t know.” Osamu said, and Rintaro turned back to see him staring at his paper. “No ones ever wanted me. Well, ‘cept ‘Tsumu.”
Rintaro froze, terrified to press for more. He thought Shigeru said Osamu was like him, which would mean that he was adopted right? Or were his parents like Rin’s?
Another kick to his knee was followed by a hissed “Say you’re sorry, jerk! He’s doesn’t have parents yet.”
“S-sorry… I thought you were adopted already.” Rintaro tried to explain, trying to fix the guilt that was crushing his chest.
“Oh…” Osamu brightened a little at the new information before shaking his head. “No, no, Shinsuke-san is just fostering us, cuz no one wants us…. I do hope he decides to let us stay though… He’s a lot nicer than the other foster parents.”
Rintaro wasn’t sure what to say to that. Though… His parents probably wouldn’t notice a new kid in the house and he knew how to write their signatures…
“I really like Shinsuke-san,” Osamu continued, his voice soft as he glued together two shapes. “He’s really nice and I think he likes us too… And I like going to the shop, ‘cuz it’s pretty and it’s fun to make things with all the ribbons. And I don’t want to lose my friends again when I have to leave.”
Rintaro blinked twice at him before reaching over and hugging him as tightly as he could.
“If anyone tries to send you away, me ‘n Shigeru’ll fight ‘em and you can stay with us.” Rintaro promised. “Pinky promise… Or you can stay with Hitoshi-kun, his Okaasan is super super nice, you just have to watch out for his neesan because she likes to bully people who are shorter than her, but I’ll fight her for you and you can just hang out with his Okaasan.”
Shigeru collapses onto Osamu’s other side, squeezing him between his two new friends.
“And if she can’t take you, I’ll ask Tatay and you can be my new baby brother and Atsumu too and you can be Akira’s big brothers and he’ll hug you for hours and be grumpy about it.” Shigeru laughed, holding tighter and Osamu giggled.
Rintaro watched Osamu melt between them, trying to hug both of them at the same time while laughing. Three more shaped pieces of paper had been glued to his cheeks and a few shreds were on his fingers, transferring themselves to Rintaro. He couldn’t really bring himself to care.
He had two brand new friends now and he was going to protect them just like Hitoshi.
Hitoshi wasn’t a big fan of fighting. It had always scared him, even just watching cartoons on tv when he was a toddler would quickly send him into a crying fit. He remained the same through the first few months of school, crying at any minor argument between the other kids until the school bullies realized he was the easiest to pick on.
It continued until he heard them laughing at Rintaro for using ‘condescending’ towards their history teacher. In a flash of bravery he never saw coming, he’d spun around and told them to shut up.
“You’re dumb, and you’re condescending.” Hitoshi had shouted, bringing everything to a standstill as the awful realization washed over him that he’d yelled at someone who could hit him. He’d been sent to the office for the remainder of class and by the time he’d returned he’d found himself with his first school friend.
He didn’t mind only having one friend. Rintaro was always really nice to him and liked to teach him new words just like Hitoshi’s mom had done before she had to get a second job. He never left Hitoshi alone or ran off with other people and forgot about him and he even got his neesan to stop calling him a baby.
Hitoshi didn’t think Shigeru counted as his friend because he was always messing around with Rintaro but he was nice so Hitoshi didn’t mind it when he came over to play during recess or spent the classes talking with Rintaro. After all, Shigeru might decide Hitoshi was interesting too and then he’d have two friends.
He’d tried to become friends with Shinji, after all the Matsukawa brothers were known as the friendliest in the entire school and the least scary. However, twenty seconds into being handed a fresh muffin from a smiling Shinji for saying hello, Hitoshi had decided he would never talk to him again. The hot face and nervous stomach was not worth a muffin, even if he did think Shinji was very nice. Very very nice.
Rintaro thought his ‘crush’ was funny but Hitoshi honestly just wanted to give Shinji something cool back. Since he didn’t have anything as nice as a fresh muffin, Hitoshi was just going to never talk to Shinji again.
It was foolproof.
Until the new kid, who was also nice but didn’t have muffins, immediately started a conversation with Shinji with absolutely no hesitation or worry. Hitoshi didn’t know what he was more jealous of, the fact that the new kid could make friends so quickly or that he didn’t get super nervous just by looking at Shinji.
Now, he was squished between Shinji and Atsumu in the back corner of the room trying to glue together a bunch of paper shapes to make cards. Part of Hitoshi wondered if this was payback for every time he didn’t stop Rintaro from eating Shigeru’s lunch.
The gods must have been laughing because as soon as Shinji sat down he was pulling out two slightly squashed cupcakes.
Internally Hitoshi swore he was going straight home today and giving the gods anything they wanted if they stopped torturing him. Instead of saying any of that, he just inclined his head gratefully to Shinji and shoved the cupcake in his mouth before the teacher noticed and told them to put it away.
Atsumu was carefully peeling his and nibbling at the rich pink and white frosting, a giant cat cut out from paper in front of him. Hitoshi took a moment to watch him, curious.
Everyone in school knew Shinji and Shigeru weren’t the Matsukawa’s real kids, but it wasn’t the same thing. They were already adopted, but the Miya twins were actual foster kids and Hitoshi had never met one of them before.
Atsumu didn’t look any different then the other kids, other than the black bruises down the side of his face but Hitoshi barely noticed them. His mom was really clumsy too and used to have bruises all the time too.
He was a little grumpier then Hitoshi thought especially since Shigeru and Shinji were always so happy. Then he thought about it. If he was taken away from his mom he’d be upset and angry too and Atsumu didn’t even have a mom or dad to go home too.
“What’re you starin’ at me for?” Atsumu grumbled and Hitoshi jumped, squeaking out an apology and shrinking down when he was glared at.
“Atsumu,” Shinji intervened with the talent of someone used to keeping Shigeru from fighting other kids, “he was just looking at you. Hitoshi-kun doesn’t talk much, he was probably just trying to think of something to say… right Hitoshi-kun?”
The urge to run screaming to hide behind Rintaro built in his chest as Hitoshi nodded, trying not to look Shinji in the eye in case he turned into a tomato. That didn’t stop Shinji from smiling as widely as he could at him before turning to Atsumu.
“See? You don’t have to be mean to your friends, Atsumu… and yes, being grumpy at them is mean.” Shinji giggled, endlessly cheerful as Atsumu seemed to sulk slightly in his chair. Hitoshi couldn’t help but be fascinated by him.
He had been so nice at first even if he was really protective of his brother, and now he was grumpy again. Was it because Osamu was having fun without him? Hitoshi’s neesan always had fun without him so he didn’t really see the problem.
“Atsumu-kun,” Hitoshi started, only to squeak as a paper ball struck the back of his head.
Sniggers erupted behind him and Hitoshi sighed, shrinking down slightly. This was why he always tried to group up with Rintaro and Shigeru. No one was going to fight those two just to make him cry.
“Hitoshi-kun?” Atsumu looked confused at his squeak, head tilted almost completely to his shoulder. Shinji on the other hand, already had his eyes narrowed on the group of laughing kids behind them.
“It’s okay, really… Really Shinji-kun, it’s okay.” Hitoshi tried to insist without letting his voice pitch too high. Shinji glanced at him before sighing and offering him the glue stick.
“You know, you should just tell Shigeru,” Shinji said, silver eyes glowing with a surprising amount of hostility, “He’d take care of any bullies.”
“Shigeru-kun would get in trouble for it and it’s not worth getting in trouble for me. I can handle it-” Two more balls smacked against his back, tearing out a small shriek before Hitoshi clamped his hands over his mouth.
The sounds of two chairs being thrown back made the room go silent as both Atsumu and Shinji stood up. There was a moment of silence as everyone else tried to understand what was going on and Hitoshi had to wave his hand frantically to stop Rintaro and Shigeru from rising up.
“Atsumu-kun! Shinji-kun! What are you two doing? Sit back down.” The teacher called from the front, lips twisted in a frown. “Don’t make me have to call your parents, especially you Shinji-kun. You haven’t been listening at all today, its not like you.”
Slowly, they lowered themselves back into their seats. Shinji looked only a little annoyed but Atsumu looked genuinely upset and Hitoshi immediately scooted closer.
“It’s okay, really.” Hitoshi whispered over to him, trying to offer him a crayon. “I’m used to it, don’t get in trouble with the teacher.”
“I don’t care about the teacher, but Shinsuke-san…” Atsumu cut himself off, looking close to tears.
“Shinsuke-san?” Hitoshi prompted, glancing up when Shinji stood up and started making his way to the teacher.
“Shinsuke-san… is my… foster parent.” Atsumu looked away, voice getting softer and softer as if he was embarrassed by what he was saying.
“Is he… mean?” Hitoshi said after a moment of confusion. Atsumu looked up immediately, shaking his head panickedly.
“No! No, Shinsuke-san is really really nice… He’s… He’s the nicest parent I’ve ever had… but foster parents don’t like it when you get into trouble… they say you make them look bad and then they don’t want you anymore… and if… If we do really good then… Shinsuke-san might keep Osamu so… Osamu will have a dad.”
Hitoshi hesitated, trying to think it all over. How could a child make their parents look bad? His mother loved him no matter how bad Hitoshi did in school or if he got in trouble. She’d be upset but she always wanted him, always loved him.
Suddenly Hitoshi felt terrible for anytime he’d thought about wanting parents like the other kids. At least he had his mom and she’d do anything for him. Osamu and Atsumu didn’t have anyone at all.
“What about you? Why don’t you get to be adopted?” Hitoshi forced the question out, certain he didn’t want to hear the answer. Atsumu looked confused at Hitoshi’s question, like he couldn’t understand why Hitoshi didn’t already know.
“No one wants me, Hitoshi-kun. I’m a bad kid. Kids like me… we just get kicked around until we’re adults then we take care of ourselves. Nobody willingly adopts trouble-makers. But Osamu is a good kid, he listens to all of his elders and eats his vegetables and he’s good at cleaning. He never talks too much and doesn’t trip and get hurt or make too much noise. If he gets adopted then he won’t have to leave, and he can be happy.” Atsumu didn’t seem to see anything wrong with what he said but Hitoshi felt sick.
His mother always told him that there was no such thing as a bad kid, just a misunderstood one. How could anyone tell Atsumu he was bad? He was nice, even if he was grumpy, he just wanted to protect his brother.
He opened his mouth, ready to tell Atsumu that he and his brother could move in when a pencil smacked against his cheek.
He yelped, immediately shielding his eye as his cheek twinged with pain. Atsumu was standing up again, hand closing around Hitoshi’s shirt like he was going to throw Hitoshi behind him.
“No, what about, what about Shinsuke-san?” Hitoshi squeaked and Atsumu froze. Guilt and panic flooded Atsumu’s eyes.
“Sensei, they’re…” Atsumu said, barely catching her attention from Shinji who immediately stopped talking, looking worried. “They’re throwing things at Hitoshi-kun.”
Atsumu seemed to be shaking even as the teacher glanced over at the other group of tables. She sighed, shaking her head at them.
“You and Shinji both today, stop it with the tattling.” The teacher sighed, shaking her head and pointing back at their table. “Finish your cards, I don’t want to hear anything else about this. They’re just paper balls.”
Atsumu looked as sick as Hitoshi felt, watching Shinji walk towards them with stiff shoulders. The sniggers were grating on Hitoshi’s ears as Shinji took his seat, all of their faces bright red after the teacher’s words.
“I’m sorry,” Hitoshi whimpered, tears already starting to leak out of his eyes.
“No, Hitoshi-kun. It’s not your fault.” Shinji reached out, trying to wipe them away but it did nothing to stop the stream. Instead he just hiccuped and sobbed, nodding his head.
His new friend was getting in trouble because of him and Atsumu looked scared and it was Hitoshi’s fault. Hitoshi got him in trouble and he might get in trouble at home too. Hitoshi just messed up everything, every time, he couldn’t do anything right.
Atsumu reached over, trying to nudge his new friend to break him out of his panic when he hit someone else. He looked up to see the kid sitting behind them that had thrown the pencil. Already Atsumu wanted to smack him to get him away from Hitoshi.
“What are you two doing with this baby? I know your brother likes to hang out with them but I thought you were better than that Shinji-kun.” The other kid said, sneering down at Hitoshi’s choked sobs. “He’s just a baby, he shouldn’t even be in school.”
“Shut up.” Shinji snapped, turning to Hitoshi and dabbing at his eyes with his sleeve. “It’s okay Hitosh-kuni, don’t listen to him. It’s okay.”
“Seriously? He can’t even stop crying.” The kid looked disgusted, turning and shoving Hitoshi out of the chair. “Look he’s just a-”
Whatever he was, he didn’t get to share because Shinji launched himself out of his chair with a string of words that didn’t sound like Japanese. In seconds the other boy was on the ground, the full weight of the older student on him and holding him down.
Atsumu didn’t even think, moving to Hitoshi’s side and pulling him up to his feet before standing in front of him, arms out in case anyone else tried to hit him.
“Shinji! Atsumu! What are you two doing?” The teacher yelled and Atsumu’s heart sank.
Shinsuke was going to be so upset with him.
Akagi had known Kita Shinsuke since their first year of middle school. Since the moment the kid had taken the watch Akagi had stolen from the middle school bully and put it back in the bully’s bag and sat by passively as the teacher admonished the bully for lying about thieves.
“You shouldn’t have stolen it… But he shouldn’t have broken Yuna-chan’s nose.” Shinsuke had said and Akagi had refused to leave his side ever since.
He’d met Ojiro Aran on the first day of highschool with a spike to the face and he’d never made a friend faster.
He’d grown up with them and watched his team spread apart.
Akagi never worried for Aran. Aran knew where he was going and absolutely no one would ever stop him. Until he basically dropped off the map three years ago.
Sure, Akagi knew he was actually just in France and he was still playing at the top. Yet, even Akagi who spent his days travelling over the entire world freelance saw their friends more than he did. For three years Akagi only saw him once a year, still happy, still healthy, but so far away.
Oomimi, of course, was never someone anyone had to worry about. He was the only one Akagi knew should actually be trusted to be an adult, because even after having the title for ten years Akagi knew he wasn’t an adult. He’d chosen to become a social worker, helping children and trying to battle against the system to protect them.
He always left a key for Akagi and never minded a visit. He always checked up on Shinsuke and kept updates on Aran as best as he could between the man’s erratic texting skills.
Shinsuke, however, Shinsuke always worried Akagi.
Not because he wasn’t mature, no, no, he was the most emotionally aware and probably the strongest person Akagi had ever met. Sometimes, though, Shinsuke would get trapped in his own mind without realizing it.
He always had his routines, the way he’d clean the bathrooms at exactly 2:58 until 3:13 then move to the locker rooms and change in precisely three minutes. He’d stretch for ten minutes, run four laps and stretch for another three. Then serves, then blocking, then receives. Everything was planned and ordered and any deviation would scratch at him like an itch until he either broke or fixed his schedule.
Shinsuke’d become more tolerant of mishaps in his routine as he got older, no longer completely breaking down when not able to finish something properly. He’d insisted that he learn how to handle it, refusing to lose even a second of his life to panic.
He was doing well, Akagi knew it. He adapted to the changing schedules of his employees, making his own routine in little things. Getting up, cleaning the house, visiting the shop, leaving for the gym, evening reading. The foster kids helped, keeping him on his toes and away from a routine set in stone while he still got to encourage and help them.
Shinsuke always loved kids after all, and he’d been so excited to take after not only his Grandmother but his late parents’ old wedding shop. Then he’d quit being assigned foster kids, not through any fault of his but there just wasn’t as many in their area and the government wasn’t in the habit of shipping kids across prefectures over and over again.
Shinsuke had fallen into old habits. Every part of his day was perfectly planned out, even to the point of letting him craft a ‘plan’ for the next few years that panicked him to deviate from. Though he adjusted better than Akagi thought he would with the twins, he could still see the way it picked at him not being able to follow his routine.
He could see it in the way Shinsuke twitched toward the door before he’d remember he had promised to show Osamu how to make pancakes. The way his breath would catch when he saw the time and would shift to look away. Even the constant tapping of his fingers gave him away, the itch that burrowed in his mind and was driving him subtly insane.
The adoration for the twins was holding back the worst of the reactions but Akagi knew Shinsuke would start to crack soon if he couldn’t get it out. If he didn’t face it head on and start adjusting his ‘plan’ accordingly.
Akagi knew his best friend far too well. He saw the way Shinsuke had grown too attached to the boys, his endless pride for each tiny step in the right direction, the way he shifted his routine to try and welcome them regardless of the internal consequences. Yet Shinsuke insisted he was going to let them go and find them a ‘proper’ home as if they couldn’t all see how much Shinsuke loved them. He would hold to that ‘plan’ until he was torn apart.
Which was why Akagi had harassed Tooru into helping him. Tooru hadn’t been the most willing, as loyal to their boss as everyone else in the shop but he also was the most stubborn. Once he heard about Shinsuke refusing to take a day off, he’d immediately jumped on board and promised to keep Shinsuke out of the shop. Then Akagi told a white lie to Oomimi and waited until he knew Shinsuke was going stir crazy after a too long set routine of constant mental and physical stimulation and told Oomimi to call him and ask him where he was.
Akagi hadn’t planned on Aran taking such advantage of the chance to hold Shinsuke, much less straight up hold his hand, but he wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Even now, as he skated toward the rink wall, he could see them sitting together with Shinsuke’s head on his shoulder as they talked.
“If they find out you’re trying to set them up, you’ll be in trouble.” Oomimi hummed, offering him a water bottle. The tall social worker didn’t seem bothered by Akagi’s tricks, but he’d also known Akagi was going to try and shove Aran and Shinsuke together from the moment Aran was back in town.
“It’s okay, Oomimi-kun will protect me.” Akagi laughed, fluttering his eyes at the bored look in Oomimi’s eyes. “Besides, they’re so busy just starin’ at each other they wouldn’t notice if I stripped naked.”
Oomimi froze, eyes narrowed before he relaxed again when he realized Akagi meant it only as a joke.
“Why do you care anyways? You don’t even believe in romance.” Oomimi sighed, taking back the water bottle and putting it on the bench behind him. He glanced back at the two, watching their lips curve up in identical smiles neither party aware of it. Much more and Oomimi was going to have to interrupt to tell them to either kiss or stop looking at each other like that.
“I don’t not believe in romance,” Akagi said, flicking his hand dismissively, “I just think most people chase after it thinking it’s this great feeling. Then they give up as soon as it goes away. I find it shallow and honestly boring, makes me glad I don’t have to deal with it. But…”
His eyes traveled to the two talking, the light pink on Shinsuke’s cheeks and the laughter coming from Aran. In over fourteen years, he’d never seen them look at anyone else like they looked at each other. They just molded together perfectly, enhancing every moment and supporting each other endlessly. Theirs was the only romantic story that could ever make Akagi wonder what it would be like if he felt the same romantic feelings they did.
“They make each other happy. Even just being friends, they’re really happy. They know each other even after being apart, ‘Mimi. They know how to keep each other stable and they deserve to have that. They’re just both dumb. Aran’s stuck in his own world of ‘someone like Shinsuke could never love me, because I’m a big dumb gay baby’ and Shinsuke’s stuck in this world of ‘If I didn’t put it in the plan it’s not happening and I will fight the gods for my right to fuck up my own life.’ I love them so much.”
Oomimi snorted, rolling his eyes.
“Michinari. Stop bullying them.”
“Ren, make me.” Akagi stuck out his tongue and Oomimi rolled his eyes, reaching out to flick his nose.
“They’ll figure it out. You don’t have to push them together, they’re adults now.” Oomimi looked rather amused, leaning against the skating wall. “Trust me. Everything’s going to be just fine.”
“... You sound a little bit too certain of that.” Akagi narrowed his eyes at his best friend, gasping at the curve of his mouth moving up. “What did you do?”
“I don’t know what you mean… But I will tell you that you should buy a house if Shinsuke doesn’t decide to adopt the boys in two weeks because Aran still lives in an apartment and I’ve got so many paperwork packets that just need signatures.”
“So… If Shinsuke doesn’t adopt the boys… I get to adopt them.” Akagi gasped, amusement flooding through him as Oomimi seemed to immediately regret what he’d said.
“On the other hand, I can buy a house and just give it to Aran, it’s fine.”
“What! No, no I want the boys. Give me the twins, I pinky promise I’ll only teach them a few bad words.” Akagi whined, squawking when another voice cut in.
“You will not be teaching the boys any bad words.” Shinsuke was half wrapped around Aran’s arm, still slipping even on the rubber mats. He looked only mildly annoyed in the turn of his lips, his gaze bright with amusement and Akagi cackled softly.
Aran looked as soft as ever, easily carrying Shinsuke’s weight and looking at his two other friends. He still had a tinge of dark blush over his cheeks and Akagi had to admit he was cute, no wonder so many people had confessed to him senior year.
“Hey, Aran, marry me and we’ll steal Kita’s kids.” Akagi chirped, laughing even louder when Aran face palmed.
“I’m not marrying you to adopt the twins, I’ll just adopt them on my own.” Aran said, ignoring Akagi’s dramatic gasp.
“Don’t touch my kids… Don’t let him touch my kids. Osamu doesn’t need to know any bad words, he’d like them far too much.” Shinsuke said, looking at Oomimi before stepping towards the ice carefully.
Akagi held his breath, hoping to hear him squeak or yelp but he got nothing. How boring, his friends were so inconsiderate to not help him out and give him something to laugh at them for.
Aran held him carefully until he was sure Shinsuke wouldn’t fall, then stepped after him. Akagi yowled as an arm wrapped around his neck and tucked him into a firm chest, then he relaxed, sticking his tongue up at Aran.
“C’mon Ren. You can watch me fall.” Shinsuke teased, holding his hand out to Oomimi who sighed dramatically before skating over to Shinsuke’s side and taking his hand.
“If we go down, we’re taking them with us.” Oomimi told Shinsuke who nodded and tightened his hold on Aran.
“Oh I plan too.”
Aran’s complaint made them all laugh and Akagi relaxed into his friend's hold. Aran shook his head at Shinsuke, eyes gentle and adoring as he looked down at his best friend. Akagi took the first step forward, dragging them all forward. Oomimi was right, they would be just fine. All of them.

Satoshi Mizukami Q&A, 3/3
Tumblr media
Satoshi Mizukami recently took questions from the editor's desk, and publicly from write-ins, for an interview to celebrate the first volume of Solte going on sale (Jan 9th!). So I translated them all! It’s in three parts, so I’ll post them one by one.
Here is the third and final section, general questions of all kinds.
Q: I heard you were pretty impressed by Masakazu Ishiguro's Hero (note: Debut work in Gekkan Afternoon, 2000), and when you met him you said "You're my rival!" right to his face! Is there anyone that comes to mind you would still consider your professional rival today? A: Oof. I don't think I have that spirit in me any more. But, even while myself and so many of my friends are starting to slow down, when I see them putting out work, I do feel encouraged to stick it out.
Q: I've heard you started working to become a manga artist because you "wanted to live in a fantasy world" yourself. If you really could jump into a fictional world, what kind of work would it be? Who would you be in the story? The main character, or maybe the last boss? A: I want to live in a porno game. Somewhere with no danger or fighting.
Q: From any medium, can you think of one piece that you liked the most or inspired you? And can you explain why? A: There's probably too many to try and pick just one, but in terms of what really influenced me; For manga, late 90's Shonen Sunday and early 2000's Afternoon. Then, 90's new-wave light novels. For anime, Diebuster. In film, La Puta. A handful of Sega Saturn games. Some scifi stories on forums, and a bunch of other works on Shosetsu-ka ni Narou.
Q: What have you seen/read/played more recently that you liked the best? And can you tell us what you liked? A: Manga: Touge Oni. It was the first thing I read in a while that made me jealous. In books, The Three-Body Problem. I liked the second of the trilogy best, but they were just good page-turners. For anime, Karakuri Circus. The manga ended long enough ago that it felt like going in fresh again, so it hit just right. Really liked the OP too. Film: Interstellar. Tenet wasn't great, so I rewatched this again and still good. It's exactly the kind of movie I was wanting. Games: Ring Fit. I had the idea if I got a little bit in shape, I might get some motivation back. I feel like it might be working? Just the teensiest, slightest bit. Light novels: I Am the Only One Who Knows This World Is a Game. It's just the right amount of bonkers.
Q: If you had ultimate freedom to do any kind of manga you wanted, what would it be like? Would you want a long series, or something shorter? -Ruha A: I was going to say I haven’t exactly had any restrictions, but actually a few things did come up with Solte. But even still, I can fit in any ideas I really want to draw, so I think things are pretty good as they are.
Q: If you had to put yourself in a genre, what kind of manga artist do you think you are? Sci-fi? Or maybe romance? -Takeshi A: I'm a little surprised to see "romance", even as an example. If you ask me, you can categorize me however you want.
Q: Which character are you most attached to, out of all of your works? -Habu A: Anima from Biscuit Hammer.
Q: When you're designing your characters, how do you come up with a good balance when it comes to the composition and relationships in the cast? -Yoneko A: Oh, man. I just kinda... Feel it out.
Q: I've been a big fan of your work forever! I really like your drawing style. How do you make your art the way you do? -gum A: I dunno, that's just how it turns out when I draw. I've been telling myself "Wow, I need to work on my art" for 19 years, since the day I was first published.
Q: Has raising a child had any effect on your stories? -Tai A: It means I work less.
Q: I want to draw manga too, but I'm not very confident in my skills. Do you have any advice? -Tai Arima A: First, do you mean you're not satisfied yourself with the quality of your work, or you're just not confident enough to put it out there? Don't worry, this is always a fundamental issue for creators, things rarely come out just how you imagine them. It's like how you can only print out photos at a resolution as sharp as your camera can capture them. I recommend you start by just making something. Sit down, do it, and finish it, and you'll learn a lot from it. It'll be up to you whether you show that around, but when you start, I wouldn't necessarily make a big deal out of it, you can just work on it quietly without making a big announcement. That way, there's no pressure, and if it's not working out, you can still stop or take a break without feeling bad about it. You decide how to use your time the best.
Q: When I went to a promo event for Planet With at Loft, you and Rensuke Oshikiri (Hi Score Girl) both talked about how as you get older, you find it harder and harder to stay motivated. Have you found anything that helps you in that regard? -Tayu A: I listed to some cheerful music for a while last week and actually found it helped my mood a little.
Q: I love how expressive all of your characters are! Is there anything particular in your process for when you are working on faces and expressions? -Arbel A: I have to be careful I don't go overboard making the same expression I'm drawing.
Q: I write for a hobby, but I always have trouble planning out how the story comes together. Do you have any advice or a favorite method for composing a story? -Nigou A: I read and re-read what I've got, and anywhere I think it's getting dull, I change the scene or add some exciting development. Make the last thing you think would happen, happen. And don't worry about how to tidy everything up, that's a problem for tomorrow you. Today you just has to lay it out.
Q: Hello, Sensei. I've read all your works, and I'm a big fan, but what really impresses me is your dialog. I love how it always just flows off the page, it reads so naturally. So, my question is, when you are writing the dialog, do you just hear it unfold naturally in the character's voices, or do you write more deliberately like "oh, here they would probably say this?" That probably sounds weird to people who've never written manga, but I'd like to know about your process. P.S. Good luck with the Ring Fit grind. -Kiki A: First I decide how the dialog needs to play out in order to advance the story in the direction I want. Then, I just let the characters talk among themselves, and if it doesn't turn out right, I go back, shake things up, and try again. And sometimes I get good material, but it just needs to be trimmed or re-arranged just right.
Q: A lot of your stories have some sort of turning point where the back half really kicks it up a notch and things just keep getting more intense. Do you already have these developments planned when you start a manga? -TKO A: I usually have a few ideas but it's always pretty vague. I never know if I'm gonna wind up putting in or cutting certain scenes, so I don't worry about it too much.
Q: Do you have one favorite scene or a particular line from your own work? -yamatozo A: At the beginning of Spirit Circle volume 6, where the bad guy falls down the stairs and goes "I've made a lot of missteps".
Q: Do you have any idea of what genre you'd like to draw next? -Umehoshi A: I won't say no, but I don't want to give anything away (for my next work, or this one).
Q: If you weren't successful as a manga artist, where do you think you would be? -Ayuta A: Jail. But I'd be a model prisoner.
Q: How much longer do you think you'd like to continue as a manga artist? -Ayuta A: If I could pay the bills for the rest of my life with 24 pages a month, that's just what I'd do. At some point maybe I'll get to be unsatisfied with that and start to push myself to work more and more until I get sick of it, but no telling when that might come.
Q: How do you think of your character's names? -Takeshi A: They just come to me. I look at how I designed the characters and just imagine.
Q: I feel like some kind of forgiveness or absolution is something a lot of your characters go through. Does "forgiveness" have a special significance to you? -Bow-wow A: I'm not sure. Maybe it's me who is seeking forgiveness.
Q: Do you have a favorite phrase or motto? A: I like Shigeru Mizuki's (Gegege no Kitaro) 7 Rules of Being Happy. I don't really go around saying them or anything, but it's something I like to remind myself of, and helps me be mindful of other people. Also, I like "fortune favors the bold."
Q: You like frogs enough that you always draw yourself as one. What do you like about frogs? And do you have a favorite species? A: Frogs are cute. I like green tree frogs the best.
Q: You've drawn a lot of different youkai in Sengoku Youko, but out of all the youkai that most people know from stories, which is your favorite? Could it be the Chan Chu (chinese money toad), or possibly the oogama (monstrous giant toad)? A: My favorite youkai is Mizuki Shigeru.
Q: You've been doing Ring Fit, and eating oatmeal, are you doing anything else to help stay in shape? A: I put the Karakuri Circus season one and season two OP on a playlist and listen to it while I walk to work.
Q: If you were stranded all alone on a deserted island, what are the three things you would want to have with you? A: Really? Okay. I would bring two essential tools I can't find on an island, and a map.
Q: Do you have a favorite actor or celebrity? -Umehoshi A: Nope.
Q: What's the best kind of alcohol and snacks you've had? Where did you drink it? -Ikaninjin A: In the middle of a hellish summer and probably suffering from heatstroke at an amusement park with my kid, I had the best beer of my life in an air-conditioned food court. And the delicious spice to top it off was the bright sun knifing through the window that I just knew was tormenting everyone still outside.
Q: What do you want to be when you grow up? -Ayuta A: A youkai.
Q: What does your internal mindscape look like? -Rou A: An empty lot.
Q: Has anything happened recently that you're happy about? -Sanachan A: My son is starting to read and write.
Q: What kind of hotpot are you looking forward to this winter? -Tommy A: I'm not crazy about hotpot.
Q: I'd like to go to another event where we can toast again, would you consider it?
-Uta
A: If current events allow.
Q: How many times have you thought about quitting Ring Fit? -Honyarara A: 2 or 3 times. A week.
Q: I know you call it your "100-day Ring Fit Diary" on twitter, but since you've been taking breaks too, will you be going past 100? Will the illustrations be collected and published anywhere? -The Dieting Gentleman A: I'm going until I clear adventure mode, but it'll probably be finished by the time this article is up. I'll probably do some sets here and there. No plans for the illustrations.
Q: Do you have a favorite panel out of all your works? -Umehoshi A: You guys are really focused on my favorite everything. I have a lot of panels I like, not one in particular.
Q: Hi, I really enjoy all of your works, and there's one thing I think I notice (sorry if I'm wrong), and that's a love of glasses girls. Out of your manga so far, which is your favorite of all your glasses girls? Do you have a particular girl you've become a fan of recently? As for myself, I really like Yoru from Sanjin Sadou, so I'd love to see a story with her and her sister! -Bashi A: Glasses girls aren't particularly a thing for me.
Q: When you're doing authographs or sketches, does it bother you at all if people request characters from your past works? If I get a chance, I would probably ask for Hyou Shimaki from Biscuit Hammer, for instance. -Akasha A: If it's a promo event for a Mag Garden title, and you were to ask for a character from a Gahosha title, for instance, it might technically bump up against merchandising contracts, which makes it a little weird (I'm typically not allowed to to create any merchandise without going through the publisher), but my managing editors are usually cool enough about it. But if it's specifically a Sengoku Youko event, for instance, and I'm constantly getting asked for Biscuit Hammer drawings (let's say more than half), that would probably be an issue and they might make a rule against it for next time. Also, I tend to forget how the older characters actually looked. For personal reasons, I probably won't be doing any in-person events like this for a while, though. There's also the whole "current state of the world" thing, and my profitability and if bookstores actually want to do it, a lot of issues to solve.
Q: You usually draw Anima working out on Twitter, but did you have plans for any other characters to show up doing Ring Fit? (Like from Angel or Sanjin) -RYO A: I did, but forgot.
Q: Will you put together another oneshot collection, like Geko Geko? -Friday A: I don't know.
Q: Question! What is love? -Shirae A: To live is to love.
Q: How about this, do you have any questions you want to ask your readers? -Buriki A: Would you rather have: A. One series a month, from roughs to completion, all done by me B: Two series a month, with roughs by me and final touches by someone else
Q: I know thinking positive is half the battle, but what can I do about people who're determined to get me down? Can I give them a Samidare Punch? -Nondakure A: Your fist, and the choice of how to use it, belongs to you alone.

ok but if shigeru is coming back as a rival that’s. actually got so much power.     like, the first time shigeru started reevaluating his whole battle trainer thing was at the sekiei league, & arguably even earlier than that because of the tokiwa gym & getting his ass effortlessly whooped by sakaki.     but okay that was a reevaluation of how he thought of battling, it made him eat some humble pie & tone down his ego  ;     just because he’s an ookido doesn’t mean he’s automatically the best at everything & he can & will fail in battles if he’s overconfident.
in johto tho he started thinking about going into research instead, wanting to try uncovering mysteries surrounding evolution, so he decided to make the johto league his last challenge to the battling world before moving on to research.     he lost to satoshi, all loose ends got tied up, on he went.
except, satoshi always kept seeing him as a rival, asking for a battle every time they met on home turf.     & shigeru’s good at being a researcher but, there’s still that old ookido family name pressure, doubled now that he’s in the same profession as his grandfather who’s arguably the biggest deal in the entire field of pokemon research, & a lot of people expect him to be just like the great professor ookido.     so deciding, actually, no, i think i’m gonna give battling another shot, that’s a power move, because he’s already learned to remove himself from expectations as an ookido who’s a battler, & it separates him from being compared to his grandfather.     i just think that’s got neat potential.

Thoughts on the Pokemon Direct - Sword and Shield.
It was cool to see the gang - Tsunekazu Ishihara introducing the new game brought the warm and fuzzies. The Graphics are genuinely stunning and it looks like it will be one of those games where you sometimes just spin the camera to look at the surroundings, like Breath of the Wild, Skyrim etc. The locations look really detailed and I'm sure I saw a hairdresser's shop in the industrial looking city, so it seems character customisation might make a return which I personally love in any game. The soundtrack is also really pleasant, motivating and relaxing and gives me all the feels. The mix of pokemon encounter styles, with pokemon walking around in the wild, like in GO, as well as random encounters in the grass, will be fun to figure out. Those walking around seem to be in the Wild Area, which is the part that gives me the most Breath of the Wild vibes, which I mean as the highest compliment, especially with the changeable weather and time of day mechanics. The free moving camera controls in this region will undoubtedly make for some great screengrabs too. The name Wild Area and the soundtrack seem to be paying homage to Zelda as well, which is heartwarming for us nerds. Multiplayer max raids seem interesting, I think they may grow on me but at the moment I'm unsure about the idea of being unable to catch certain types of pokemon without first doing so in a max raid battle, I like the games to be playable alone as well as with friends, but I do like the idea of Nintendo promoting at least some type of social interaction. Kazumasa Iwao showing us the Dynamax pokemon in gym battles and max raid battles was interesting to say the least, I'm still waiting to hear the lore (if any) behind this when the game comes out, max moves that come along with dynamaxing are intriguing, I wonder if this would effectively give pokemon eight moves each. The gimmick being dynamaxing is okay with me tbh, I'm not the biggest fan of the gimmicks, megas, z moves etc, I don't mind them but I prefer to basically ignore them personally. I like that dynamaxing seems to be inclusive of all pokemon as opposed to things like megas only being given to certain ones, and it seems that maybe dynamaxing can only be performed in certain areas, like gyms or near the magic glowing stones in the Wild Area, which makes sense I suppose. It may have to grow on me that it's basically just pokemon becoming enormous and changing their moves into max moves for three turns, but if it has some cool lore behind it I can really get on board. I also really like the idea of having gym battles being held in giant stadia with capacity crowds, which ties into the anime, with the atmosphere and excitement possibly factoring into the battles. I wonder if the sports kits are compulsory for the gym battles and will they also be customisable? It was cool to see Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori as well, always nice to see the faces behind the games, I want to genuinely thank them for the truly breathtakingly beautiful UK inspired region. Also, Jamie! James Turner made an appearance and he's Art Director now, so cool to see his rise in Game Freak. The new pokemon he introduced were really well designed as well. Wooloo is so lovable, a pokemon based on a sheep was always going to happen in a UK based region but I genuinely thought "LOVE!" as soon as I saw this wee beauty. Gossifleur and its evolution Eldegoss are cool too and I like the bits of lore we got concerning their seeds being used as home remedies for ailment and making the land more fertile. Dreadnaw is a grower I suppose, I'm not instantly in love but I can see why others would adore this beast. Corviknight is another pokemon I saw and thought, "YES, YES THIS I LOVE." A crow, a knight and a black cab mixed into one pokemon, it's so stereotypical of the UK and I love it. I love that the new fly mechanic is hitching a ride on Corviknight and the bike returns and allows for surfing too. Although riding pokemon was great in GO and surfing on your pokemon was fun too, I suppose having the adaptable bike allows for trainers who don't have rideable or surfable pokemon in their teams, to still be able to travel faster and cross water. The direct really hammered home that Leon was suchhhh a good guy that it made me feel like he may turn out to be the antagonist in the end, his royalty and sports kit inspired look was unique and having Charizard be his signature pokemon sets him up to be interesting. Leon's younger brother Hop being your rival seems like a step in the right direction at least, he seems competent and has a good back story reason to want to defeat you, it seems he will have the pokemon that is weak to your starter choice, but it was stated he will only be one of your rivals, so hopefully the other(s) is/are even more competitive. I wondered which tree they were going to use to name the professor and Magnolia has a great ring to it, I also appreciate that they are upping the number of women on the professorship roster, and having both professor Magnolia and her assistant Sonia looking like they will play a more central role in this story. I really hope with Sonia being Professor Magnolia's granddaughter and the former rival of Leon, that she is a Cynthia type character, who is a really powerful leading figure in this region. Milo was a fun reveal too, I like that he has freckles, along with the child's face on the bodybuilder's body, which is hilarious. Also if I recall correctly, Milo is ginger, as well as Sonia, so naturally I am loving that. The last part of the direct was the box legendary reveals, Zacian and Zamazenta whose names make me laugh because, are they literally just Cyan and Magenta? Those are the colours of the Sword and Shield logos and ‘mazenta’ is a romanisation of the Japanese spelling and pronunciation of magenta, these are also the colours they flash when they power up, but really? That's where the names come from? Again, hoping there is more lore or at least some meta that will make these names cooler. As for the pokemon themselves, I love the idea of a graceful sword wielding wolf and a monstrous shield like wolf, I also like the unstoppable force versus immovable object basis for them. I am still waiting for more information behind why Zacian holds a sword in its mouth because, again, with cool lore behind it, I'd like it, I am sure some form of explanation will come out soon. The third legendary they seem to be facing off against should also be a cool reveal, although I wonder if it will be based on something British to go with the Galar region, such as wyverns, black dogs or even unicorns or something, or if it will continue the wolf theme. I really like the box art too tbh, whether or not it's final I'm not sure but I like the clean look. The only thing I think will need to grow on me is that they basically look like the exact same pokemon in two different poses or forms. I'm also pleased we got a release date and will probably book 15th November off work to play these games with my brother.

(Gary anon) Fanon is a place full of experimentation. (No matter how popular a fandom take is; even it comes true, canon will reach and hit people in the face more. And is less easy to ignore) I agree, sounds like something that'd be more plausible when he's older. (Or heck, give it to Tracey :P) I like the idea of Gary having his own private base more, where he does his own thing while picking and choosing who to lend a hand to. (New magazine info says he'll be here May 28th. And...)
(Part 3) ...Gary gets to redo this again; albeit under different circumstances. (Another quote prompted again "And just what is Shigeru's goal?!". This definitely doesn't sound like 1-episode thing. It feels like another whole story arc unlocked.) As for the other two Project Mew characters, they're being played up as Goh's rivals too. (Which makes more sense considering their goal) ...Aaaand they're doing a very good job of hiding Haxorus. I will laugh if it ends up being something else.
Looks like Tumblr ate part two of this. This is a Functioning Website.
Yeah, as much as I put characters Through It in my writing, it really doesn’t affect anything or anyone but me and the ten or so people who read my stuff. (Also when I make characters suffer, I don’t leave them on that note for twelve years.)
Tracey is honestly like, the prime candidate to eventually take over Oak’s lab in my opinion. He deserves that, and I think he’d be happier with the position than Gary would. Gary’s such a restless spirit that he’d probably be peacing out to do fieldwork on a regular basis anyway.
That’s an interesting thought, Gary having his own personal base so he can just do what he wants. I like that, it’s very Him.
MAY 28TH? I was seeing magazine scans on Twitter last night, but I can’t read Japanese and nobody on my TL was saying we had a confirmed date! That’s so soon! I can’t believe we’re going to be graced with his appearance in just a month. (And also that’s just over a week after my birthday, so I can be a little egocentric and call it a gift from the universe, haha.)
Yeah, it’s definitely feeling like Gary will be sticking around a while. I’m so ready to see him and find out what he’s up to, especially when they’re being all mysterious about it.
Goh getting rivals is great, I love a good rivalry. Should be fun to see that.
Yeah, no glimpse of Haxorus so far feels very intentional. But it’d be kind of funny if we just... didn’t see it at all. (And on a semi-related note, Gary’s Umbreon is also conspicuous in its absence, though Umbreon’s fully evolved already so I really don’t see much reason to hide it?)
