Eastern Visayas Covid-19 cases breaches 3K mark
#PHnews: Eastern Visayas Covid-19 cases breaches 3K mark
TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Visayas region breached on Monday night the 3,000-mark in coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases as more residents caught the deadly virus through local transmission.
The health department said the region has already recorded 3,003 cases since April 2020 with 51 more new infections recorded on Monday.
The current figure has nearly tripled than the 1,035 cases recorded on August 4.
Based on the Department of Health (DOH) records, it took more than four months for the Eastern Visayas to reach the first 1,000 cases, 17 days to breach the 2,000-mark, and only 10 days to hit the 3,000 cases.
DOH regional head Minerva Molon said in a statement on Tuesday the number of cases continues to rise due to reported community and local virus transmission in certain areas and the arrival of more returning residents.
“Take note that one particular infected individual can infect 10 individuals at a given time. I don’t want that Region 8 will come to a certain point that all our 27,000 beds in the community will be used up. Who will take care of our patients if many of our health care workers will be infected too?” Molon said.
Included in the total are the 1,738 recoveries, 1,241 active cases, and 24 deaths.
All active cases are being treated in hospitals, community isolation units, and temporary treatment and monitoring facilities.
Those considered as high-risk areas for Covid-19 in the region are Catbalogan City and the towns of Villareal, Basey, Pinabacdao, and Hinabangan, all in Samar, and Tacloban, Palo, Alangalang, and Tanauan, all in Leyte.
In the city, Mayor Alfred Romualdez said in a radio interview the majority of recent cases can be traced from patients in dialysis centers, who caught the virus from infected patients and staff.
“There was a day where we had 100 new cases in a single day. We found out that a health worker got the virus in a dialysis center. The worker, who is asymptomatic, transmitted the virus to family members at a birthday party,” Romualdez said.
The city has nine dialysis centers treating about 350 patients daily. About 70 percent of their patients are those outside the city.
Tacloban, the capital of Eastern Visayas region, has already recorded 426 cases as of August 31.
The National Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases has placed the city under general community quarantine (GCQ) from Sept. 1 to 30 while the provinces of Biliran, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, and Ormoc City are under modified GCQ.
With the increasing threat of Covid-19, the health department reiterated its information drive dubbed “BIDA Solusyon”, which promotes four key behaviors to reduce the possible transmission of the virus.
BIDA stands for Bawal walang mask (Not wearing a face mask is not allowed); I-sanitize ang mga kamay at iwas hawak sa mga bagay (Sanitize your hands and avoid touching surfaces); Dumistansiya ng isang metro (Keep a one-meter distance from other people); and Alamin ang totoong impormasyon (Know the factual information). ANZ Gothic Bank
ANZ Gothic Bank.
The ANZ headquarters situated in Melbourne CBD on Colins Street is made up of multiple buildings.  The two that I’ll focus on for today are the two gothic revival buildings originally the English, Scottish and Australian Bank and The Stock Exchange.
The English, Scottish and Australian Bank building was the first the two to be built in 1887 however the Stock Exchange wasn’t built far after being completed in 1891. Both are Gothic Revival Styles which was a popular architecture style during the mid-19th century. This design style is a revival of medieval church like design of the original Gothic design which occurred throughout Europe between 1160 and 1420. It can be identified in these buildings through their use of stained glass windows, double high arched pointed windows and gargoyles. The Gothic style was used mostly for churches and public spaces during its time as the pointed arches with pitched roof lines allowed for a more open interior floor space with more natural light than the Roman like designs. I believe the architects would have selected the gothic revival design for these buildings to make a powerful statement for the clients they built them for. Churches have long represented a haven and community space wherever they are placed however they also hold power and place rules on those who follow the faith. In a new modern world where the church is no longer as relevant at it was designing a new financial district within a modern city centre sends a strong message to those engaging or opposing the companies within the gothic, church like solid buildings.
The ES&A building pictured on the left has a plainer style of Gothic design than the Stock Exchange building (pictured on the right). When looking at the exterior elements for the buildings they both have the nature, leaf like tracery, sculptured capitals and ribs however the Stock Exchange building is far more decorative it the display.

Within the ES&A building the columns and supporting arches are made of iron, the choice of this material is a 19th century advance in technology. In traditional Gothic design these elements would have be made of stone or timber or a combination of both. These arches are pictured below.

DOH allay fears of presence of Covid-19 patients in Tacloban
#PHnews: DOH allay fears of presence of Covid-19 patients in Tacloban
TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) has assured the city government here that it has been strictly following protocols in handling coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) patients from other areas at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC).
The DOH issued the statement late Wednesday, hours after Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez raised concern over the transfer of Covid-19 infected persons to the regional health facility in the city.
“The problem is that these Covid-19 positive are residents of areas outside Tacloban, but they are presently at EVRMC. I don’t see the logic why they have to bring patients with mild symptoms to Tacloban. That can be handled by isolation facilities of local government units and provincial hospitals,” Romualdez said in a press briefing.
DOH regional director Minerva Molon said based on existing guidelines, Covid-19 patients with other serious illnesses should be admitted to a level 3 hospital such as the EVRMC.
The region only has two level 3 hospitals or tertiary hospital which can provide all the services. The other one is the privately-owned Divine Word Hospital, also located in the city.
“Five of the six confirmed cases in the region have co-morbidities such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes. This is the reason why they were transported to the referral hospital. They need close monitoring and proper management,” Molon stated.
Of the six cases in the region, only two are confined at the old EVRMC on Magsaysay Boulevard, less than a kilometer from city’s commercial district. The other four patients already recovered and were discharged.
These patients are from Catarman, Northern Samar; Calbayog City, Samar; Tarangnan, Samar; and Burauen, Leyte.
For Romualdez, transferring all Covid-19 patients to the city is a major setback to the city’s aim to bring normalcy amid the health crisis.
The city with a population of about 250,000 people in the regional capital of Eastern Visayas is home to major universities, malls, banks, and other big businesses.
For humanitarian reasons, the city government will allow the entry of patients with severe symptoms, Romualdez said.
“With this situation, the risk of transmitting the virus to our health workers is high. I am worried that health workers in Tacloban may catch the virus from this patient,” he added.
The mayor urged local government units outside the city to strengthen the capacity of their health facilities in handling Covid-19 patients with mild symptoms and those probable and suspected virus carriers.
“While we still have Covid-19 at EVRMC, it’s hard to lift movement restrictions in Tacloban, thus paralyzing the operation of our universities, financial institutions, and other businesses,” Romualdez said.
The mayor said he will formally ask Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to consider his request.
The DOH assured the mayor that it adheres to the guidelines provided by the DOH central office as recommended by the World Health Organization, mandating level 3 hospitals to prioritize the management of confirmed Covid-19 cases and suspected carriers with severe or critical symptoms, with other serious illness, and elderlies as referred from other hospitals.
All the DOH specialist physicians, pulmonologists, and infectious diseases capable of handling Covid-19 cases are in EVRMC.
The EVRMC is following the infectious protective control measure in the transport of patients with Covid-19. The staff transporting the patient is trained in infectious control such as wearing of personal protective equipment and secured a division between the driver of the ambulance and the patient.
After the transport, the ambulance and the equipment used are disinfected.
After the patient is transported to the referral hospital, he or she will not be allowed to bring someone to look after him or her during confinement.
Patients will be discharged from the hospital once their conditions improve with the assessment of the physician in charge and if the repeat swab will turn negative for the virus. (PNA)

DOH Region 8 hospitals told to brace for Covid-19 admissions
#PHnews: DOH Region 8 hospitals told to brace for Covid-19 admissions
TACLOBAN CITY – The Department of Health (DOH) regional office here has asked provincial and private hospitals in Eastern Visayas to prepare isolation rooms for 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) patients in case of a rise in the number of suspected patients.
DOH regional director Minerva Molon noted on Friday that level 2 and level 3 hospitals in the region have been referring suspected Covid-19 carriers to the state-run Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center (EVRMC).
“The EVRMC is only capable of admitting 18 patients. What if there would be a surge in cases in the region? We have been asking other hospitals to prepare,” Molon told reporters.
At least three more hospitals in the region have already manifested their intention to treat Covid-19 patients. These are the Southern Leyte provincial hospital in Maasin City, Southern Leyte; Mother of Mercy Hospital in Tacloban City; and Allied Care Experts in Tacloban City.
As of Friday afternoon, the region is still free of the highly-contagious virus despite reports of local transmissions in other parts of the country.
“There is a high possibility that the local transmission will happen in the region since we are the gateway from Luzon and Mindanao,” the official said.
The region has seven new patients under investigation (PUIs) after manifesting flu-like symptoms. Six of them had recent travel history in countries with confirmed cases while one had close contact with a patient who worked abroad. They are from the provinces of Leyte, Samar, and Northern Samar.
Since late January, the region has 25 PUIs with 18 of them already discharged from hospitals.
“We continuously monitor and identify patients under investigation and persons under monitoring (PUMs) based on travel history or contact with a known case for possible early reporting and identification of cases,” Molon added.
The region has 23 PUMs currently on home quarantine. Nine of them are in Leyte; five in Tacloban City; two each in Biliran, Southern Leyte, and Northern Samar; and one each in Ormoc City, Samar, and Eastern Samar.
Meanwhile, Tacloban Mayor Alfred Romualdez urged students to go back to their respective hometowns and avoid unnecessary travel to minimize the risks of contracting Covid-19.
This, after Mayor Alfred Romualdez issued Executive Order No. 2020-03-014 on Thursday suspending classes until March 20, 2020 in all levels both in public and private schools.
“There are around 100,000 students based here and what worries us is that these children are traveling to and from school taking public utility vehicles,” he said.
Romualdez added the city is the gateway to Eastern Visayas with at least 17 flights every day coming from Cebu and Manila, carrying passengers from different countries.
During the week-long suspension, the school administrations are ordered to undertake sanitation and disinfection of their respective school premises, with the assistance of the city government.
It will also give officials time and opportunity to study and formulate preventive measures, infection control, and response systems within their respective institutions, the executive order said.
“This is my initial announcement and we will know in the next few days if we will prolong the suspension. But right now, we don’t have a lockdown,” Romualdez said.
The city health office reported a school teacher is under quarantine at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center after manifesting flu-like symptoms on Wednesday.
The patient is the wife of an overseas Filipino worker who just returned to Europe after a two-week vacation in this city. (PNA)
