Snippet from my cyberpunk story

As the evening settled in on the city, a brisk wind howled, carried the crisp scent of the ocean, which hinted at the impending arrival of autumn. Rain, relentless and unyielding, transitioned from a mere trickle to a deluge, pounded against the window in a symphony of rhythmic drumming. Tegan peered out of the foggy glass of the small, weathered sedan. Despite the downpour, The Warrens kept its distinct charm, its aged facades and pre-war architecture stood out amidst the gray gloom. While the research parkway, shrouded in a misty haze, appeared eerily uniform, as if intentionally designed to conceal the true identity of each building.

Beside Tegan sat Alexis ‘Spider’ Williams, her face adorned with a snarky expression that came etched on her cyberware-enhanced features. Her vibrant turquoise hair, accentuated by dark green highlights, caught the light and emitted a faint scent of synthetic perfume. Something delicate, floral or citrus. Tegan couldn’t put her finger on it.

Although her appearance was striking, all of it appeared fake—fake, perky breasts that demanded attention from all who were into that type of thing. Which almost defied reality. With a body sculpted under an auto-knife. She tried to hone her outside appearance better than her inside. As Alexis continued her relentless stream of snarky comments and backhanded compliments about why they needed another gun. Tegan’s aversion towards her intensified, a deep-rooted dislike that had originated back in their days at the orphanage. And now, that animosity showed no signs of waning.

Greatest flaw (in their opinion): How long she can hold a grudge. Regardless of whether or not the person has apologized, if Lexi thinks she’s been wronged in any way, she will absolutely hold some sort of animosity toward that person for a long time. While she isn’t always aggressive in showing her hatred or distrust of a person, she makes it very obvious that she doesn’t appreciate them being around. 

Best quality (in their opinion): Probably how protective she is. Lexi is the type to act first and think later, leading her into some dangerous situations as she forsakes her own safety to protect the people she cares about. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or even a stray animal, she goes out of her way to ensure their safety. She has a great sense of loyalty, which could eventually be her downfall.

Biggest fear: Abandonment. When she was seven, she overheard her group home’s leader telling a potential adoptive family that she had been given up by her parents due to her not being the same race as them. She knew well enough what that meant, but it wasn’t until her biological parents reached out to her at the age of ten, asking her to get tested to see if she would be a donor match for the kidney her brother needed, that she realized how deep it went. They stayed in contact during her testing, but as soon as they realized she wasn’t a match, they ditched her once again. She tried reaching out many times, but they eventually sent her a letter, telling her to stop as they no longer considered her their daughter. Although she has since grown from that and is now quite content in her adoptive family, the thought of anyone leaving her, sends her spiraling.

Back to Mine by Dave Seaman 1999 Downtempo / Trip Hop / Ambient

Back in '99, UK DJ and remix label DMC started what would become a long-running and highly popular mix series called Back to Mine, which would bring in popular DJs and electronic acts to craft mixes that were perfectly suited for an after-party environment following a long night out of joyous clubbing. I imagine the name for the series comes from a hypothetical conversation between a group of people who had just left a club and were trying to figure out what their next move should be:

Person 1: "Alright, so where to next?"

Person 2: "Well, we could go back to mine."

Person 1: "Yeah, that sounds good."

And then when they got to Person 2's place, they would all unwind themselves with one of these Back to Mine mixes 😌.

So, it seems like with the first three releases in this series, all of which came out in 1999, Back to Mine was set on casting world-famous DJs in a different sort of light; ones who weren't known at all for playing chillout tunes. Nick Warren, Danny Tenaglia, and Dave Seaman were all heralded as masters of the packed dancefloors, but not so much the comedown rooms that adjoin them.

But as this excellent second volume shows, Seaman could certainly hack it in a setting such as this. In this hour-plus of downtempo, trip hop, and ambient bliss, the former editor of DMC's very own biblical electronic music monthly, Mixmag, starts out with a collection of total immersion and engrossment before branching out into heavier, more head-nodding fare, and then finishes off with Lamb's "Gorecki," a remarkably sublime tune that manages to simultaneously satisfy both categories.

But the journey to that capstone is well worth it too, as Seaman supplies us with a steady stream of tracks and remixes that seem to be done by some of electronic music's most dynamic duos: Global Communication provide some epic ambient, Kruder & Dorfmeister remix some mid-90s Depeche Mode, Paul Oakenfold & Steve Osborne strip out the vocals from Sneaker Pimps' trip hop classic, "Six Underground," and load up on rock guitar 🤘, and then the aforementioned Lamb takes us home with "Gorecki." Plus, there's also a somewhat lesser known pair from Liverpool called Desert, who deliver a sweet trip hop groove with a dusty snare break and nice breakdown in "Sonic Boom."

"A soundtrack without a film. Lie back. Close your eyes. And watch the in-flight movie on the inside of your eyelids," said Guardian critic Alexis Petridis in a review of this mix from a near-quarter-century ago that seems to still ring true to this day.

A terrific selection and sequencing of tunes here done by one of UK electronic music's brightest lights and foremost evangelists, Dave Seaman. A guy who's evidently not only just capable of bringing you out for a night of dancy hedonism, but can also take you home and tuck you into bed at the crack of dawn with some phenomenal chillout as well.

Fictional Character Ask: Crystal, Ronette and Chiffon from the musical Little Shop of Horrors

Favorite thing about them: I love the great music they sing, their enthusiasm, their clever remarks, and their creative role as semi-interactive narrators who exist partly within the story and partly as outside commentators. They're very fun characters.

Least favorite thing about them: The fact that it's ambiguous whether they're on the side of humanity or the side of Audrey II, although that ambiguity makes them interesting.

Three things I have in common with them:

*I like to sing and dance.

*I root for Audrey to get away from Orin and get together with Seymour.

*I'm multi-talented, or at least I like to think I am.

Three things I don't have in common with them:

*I'm not black.

*I"m not part of a singing trio.

*I'm definitely human and part of the real world, no mysterious ambiguity.

Random headcanon: They're three of the Muses from Hercules, in disguise (as is typical of goddesses and gods) and using assumed 1960s names to tell a new mythic story. Alan Menken has openly admitted that he went back to the style of Little Shop of Horrors for the score of Hercules, and the Muses are clearly spiritual successors to the three girls from LSOH. So why shouldn't we imagine a stronger connection between them?

Unpopular opinion: I don't know if this is unpopular, but it's different than what some people have written on TV Tropes, so I'll use it. While I accept that it's ambiguous, I don't like to think they're villains. If they were, the racial implications, with the only three black characters plus the black-coded Audrey II as villains while the "good guys" are white, would be very unfortunate. (Although technically, Seymour and Audrey don't have to be white, they just traditionally are.) I'd rather think that they're simply outside of the story's world. Maybe it's all just a fictional story to them, just like it is to us, despite their ability to sometimes step into it and interact with the characters. They genuinely sympathize with Seymour and Audrey, and they want to warn the world to beware of Audrey II. But they already know the ending, they can't change it, and in the stage version and the director's cut of the movie, they know the tragedy will serve their message of "Don't Feed the Plants." Hence why they sometimes seem to urge Seymour to kill for Audrey II – it's not that they want him to, but they know he's going to anyway, and their job is to tell the story of how it happens to warn others not to repeat his mistakes.

Charmed- 100% agree on Phoebe/Cole.

Gilmore Girls- Rory is with Tristan for me, I loved Dean but he got bad (sorry Jared!), Jess is okay, and I never understood Logan, though they are cute, when they aren't being idiots. Though Paris and Rory make me smile.

Sky High- Will/Warren. I like Layla but she was a friend.
