I wonder how many, if any, elements of LOTR we have Edith to thank for.

I mean, her husband was writing this stuff throughout their entire marriage, and he must’ve run some of it by her, if not all of it. Plus he based an entire character (Lúthien) on her, which she must’ve known. I wouldn’t be surprised if she looked over an early draft of LOTR and said “honey, come on, put an interesting female character somewhere in here,” a wish he most certainly granted with my girl Éowyn.

I’ve heard rumors that JRR originally intended to pair Aragorn and Éowyn as a couple and then tragically kill off Éowyn, but Edith said “no way you’re making it that depressing” and insisted he change it. I’m not sure if this is true, but if so, thank you, Edith!

Also this may be a stretch - and it probably is - but I wonder if she had something to do with his drastic changes to the Blue Wizards’ story. In the 50s he wrote that they probably fell to Sauron and started evil magic cults; perhaps towards the end of their lives, Edith said “honey, come on, they had to have been more helpful than that.” It was 1972, the year after Edith passed, that JRR wrote his updates to the Blue Wizards saying they were actually successful in turning many Easterlings away from Sauron. Perhaps he did so to honor an idea of hers?

If anyone has any sources mentioning any contribution from Edith, I’d love to hear about it.

Half of the request for @nine-kings-of-men

I meant to do The Blue Wizards together, but the composition kind of got away from me. Here's my attempt at a design for Alatar, I'm hoping to have Pallando done sometime in the next week or so.

There isn't much to go off for the Blue Wizards besides the fact that they seem to have gone to Harad and Rhun and they seem to have been Maiar of Orome. I tried to incorporate a different feel to his clothing and in some way reference the being a Maia of the Vala of the Hunt. Hence the initially unplanned hunting dog. I have named the dog Uruva.

Tolkien OC Week: Day 4 Forgotten Characters. Not exactly forgotten, but Tolkien ignored these dudes enough in LOTR they might as well be. I suspect they were already killed by the events of LOTR since being missionaries and revolutionaries can be a dangerous job. RIP blue wizards.

I think Pallando is the guy on the left and Alatar is the guy on the right because the guy on the left has a very friendly expression while the guy on the right is more solemn. The guy on the left just seems like the friendly friend you need for a mission. But interpret it how you want. I don't really care who's who. Their appearances were inspired by how I imagine Easterlings and Haradrim would look. So central Asian (with a Vietnamese hat because I saw it on fan art and I liked it) and Persian.

Because I waited so long between drying layers I barely got this in before midnight.

Alatar turned his head to look at his companion, and saw a smile lighting up Pallando's features.

The other Istar gestured at the land around them, his eyes shining with a youthful excitement that betrayed his appearance of an ageing man to be just a disguise. 

"I remember how Lord Oromë would speak of these lands and how we longed to see them, but we couldn't because it was dangerous. But now we shall explore and make them safe once more."
