An AU where She doesn’t Die? Sign me up!

You were 22, barely able to drink by most standards but still very Much Legal. You finally started your college courses after two years in the military and a Honorable Discharge after an IED incident that left a few, unhealthy Scars on your body and Psyche. Didn’t stop you from enjoying college life from drinking and girls, but you just felt detached sometimes and it also made it terrifyingly clear how in control you could be of your feelings. Of course that didn’t stop you from constantly being annoyed by your friends, mostly Tara.

It was an after class party that everyone was invited to. The Party was as fun as most College drinking spots were, music, laughing and the clank of glass. Sitting outside on the fire escape a few stories up, your eyes traced along the stars trying to find constellations. Your little tidbit of fun was cut off as you sensed someone walk out on the fire exit too. Akina slumped over to you, also leaning on the railing. Your eyes trail over to look her up and down, she looks worse for wear, definitely not happy, a little drunk, and pissed.

“You look like shit.” You said, “Bite me.” She responds and finishes her beer. She tosses it off the rail and it lands flush in a big Dumpster.

“Nice.” You finish yours and toss it as well. “Alright, what’s got you like this?” You asked, you could tell she was upset, very upset, so something had to be the catalyst to launch this, Anika sighs and clenches her palms hard, as if she’s trying to fight the strength to utter the words.

“Me and, Mindy we.. we broke up.” She admits, this was actually a shock to you. They seemed madly in love, perfect for each other. Relationships obviously have their ups and downs, but you expected them to get married, Adopt.. but this, this is a surprise.

“Oh, wow.. I uh, I’m sorry.” You mutter. Akina shrugs and casually leans her body on your shoulder. There was no Mistake about Anika she’s beautiful, she’s always been beautiful. You hide your racing heart and let it happen, being a shoulder for your friend to cry or pass out on. Reaching down you grab another beer from the tiny ice chest and drink.

“So, what happened?” You ask, and Anika shrugs. “I’m just… tired, we almost got killed by a fuckin cop, his bitch sister and That Loser Ethan…” she admits, and it was true, and for two of the three, you’re the one that put The cop and Ethan 6 feet under. Not like you had much of a choice. “And now she’s acting like everything’s fine. You’re acting like everything’s fine.” She said, obviously getting frustrated.

“I’m just… still a little in Shock I guess, sorry bout that.” You said, “It’s okay to not be okay Anika.. let your feelings be known.” You encourage her, she looks down, fiddling with her fingers. “You’re such a fucking Sap, I love that about you… I love you.” She said in a bit of a slur. You gave her a bit of a side eye for a moment before you leaned more on the railing.

“Thanks Anika… “ you tried not to let her words creep in, she’s not in the right mind. “No, I mean it… you, wanna get out of here?” She asked, you knew what she wanted but stuck to your guns. “Alright, think that’s enough for you.” You said joking. Anika frowns, but then looks you right in your eyes.

“It’s Tara, isn’t it?” She said, and it was. You and Tara aren’t dating but, you felt something for her, you couldn’t tell her. You just couldn’t build up the courage to admit it, but your silence spoke a lot to her. Akina laughed and looked back to the night sky.

“You know, if you two start dating you’re gonna have some big issues.” She started, and you took a swig. “Like what?” You said placing your lips on the bottles head. Akina leans in and whispers, just to make sure you hear her.

“Gonna be tough parking that big trunk in that little garage she’s got.” Your drink went down the wrong hole, coughing up a storm you try to catch your breath as she laughs.

“Jesus you trying to kill me?” You said, shaking it off. She gives a slight pout. “Sorry, didn’t mean to. You alright?” She asked with concern in her voice, you nodded. You and Akina sort of just went back to looking at the sky. Until her hand gently laid on yours.

“When I was on that ladder I thought I was gonna die, you made sure I didn’t..” she said.

“Of course… I wouldn’t let you go.” You reply, and Akina took a deep breathes.

“Please, Don’t let me go.” She said, and you kept your word, holding her hand as you both look up to the sky.
