in my last post i mentioned at the end how goro akechi's "detective prince" outfit looks a hell of a lot like naoto's persona. well im still thinking about it. sit down
Tumblr media
like. when you see them side by side the resemblance IS pretty uncanny isnt it? im not crazy??
my thesis: akechi's detective prince outfit is a mix of symbols he sees as upholders of justice. aka, his role models. aka, mainly naoto and the neo featherman rangers. you know, because he's a nerd.
the latter is even more obvious in robin hood. i could swear it's canon but i for the life of me cannot remember where from. but i KNOW he is a featherman fan. it makes sense, watching a show where heroes of justice fight against evil and forming an image of justice based on that. it's further supported by his weapons, described as kids' toys. it's very likely his image of justice was formed when he was pretty young, the perfect age to form role models like this. this resemblance has been pointed out before im sure youve heard it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but i digress. you know who ELSE is a featherman fan?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(really really cute that both of them are featherman nerds. comes with being a detective prince i suppose)
that's already a pretty strong link between them -- i bet featherman ranger influenced naoto's persona, too. at least a little bit. but the resemblance to the cartoon isn't as strong with naoto. it's there, but the bird-like theme can also be explained by yamato-takeru's mythology (when he died, he turned into a great white bird and flew away).
so naoto's persona is mostly original. which means the resemblance can only be explained by respect for naoto. and i guarantee you he doesnt even realize it. (unless he's seen naoto's persona before, which might be true if you want to get funky with AUs, but probably not.) and you might look at me and think the link is kind of farfetched... but come on. the resemblance is too much to ignore to me. and even if it wasn't intentional it's interesting and fun to look at it like it is.
but what does this mean
as i mentioned in my last post, akechi's status as the first detective prince is vital to his self-image. self-image affects metaverse appearance deeply, ESPECIALLY with akechi, since his personas work differently than everyone else's. it feels easy to write this off as "oh it's just his public mask" but remember both detective prince and black mask and equally essential.
and again, it's not like naoto's popularity gets in the way of his. akechi has garnered respect on his own (or by shido's tampering, but that's a whole other can of worms). even so, the detective prince name is directly congruent with his predecessor. naoto's shadow looms over it. it's only natural that his "detective prince" form, as i've been calling it, reflects this. it's a LEGACY!
of course, naoto definitely wouldn't have a metaverse outfit like this, even with the same influences. crow is uniquely akechi, because the detective prince title is just as much his as it is naoto's.
p.s. i usually avoid the existence of persona x detective naoto as much as possible but.. but the new persona he gets there... i couldnt help but notice....

I feel like the Phantom Thieves should be way more psyched about having superpowers than they have. Like, I can understand Akechi being blasé about it because he’s had them for years, but you are NOT making me believe Ryuji and Futaba aren’t super hype every time Joker says today is Mementos day because they get to use their fucking STANDS.
Like the fact that they need Joker to help them before they start training on their power use is ridiculous. You’re telling me a 17 year-old gets to summon a ghost pirate that shoots lightning and they’re never gonna try and see how it works? You’re telling me Futaba, this fucking nerd, isn’t going into Mementos by herself just to move around in her magical UFO? We see in her all-out attack that she brings her Featherman figures with her inside of Necronomicon, I just KNOW she’s going into Mementos to chill and watch anime without being distracted.

So you know how Shido's a womanizer? Akechi and a Ken as half-siblings nerding out over Feathermen
ANON YOUR MINDDDDDD!!!!!!!! THIS IS BRILLIANT THIS BRINGS ME SO MUCH JOY!!!!!!
These poor kids don't have much luck when it comes to their mothers either 😭
It's also so good because I like to imagine that Akiren is linked to Tatsuya and Jun from P2 in some way (I know a lot of people like to say that they are his parents but Akiren was born just after when P2 takes place, so idk how feasible it is-), and so I imagine Akechi meeting them somehow through Akiren and hearing that they like Featherman and then them all starting up a little fan group.
Sometimes a friend group is just you, your half-brother, and your rival's sorta adopted parents?
(this is in reference to this post)

getting sad thinking about a post-canon “things-went-different” universe where akechi learns to be comfortable nerding out about featherman with his friends. they— futaba and akiren especially— help him work through the idea that it’s ok to be excited about his interests. because! shido’s opinion isn’t worth anything, actually! it’s ok for him to be weird, and nobody will value him any less for it.
yeah too bad that never had the chance to happen!

I think a lot of the pro vs anti futago siblings headcanon (whether actual blood relation or just found family doesn't actually matter) doesn't take into account like. How futaba would actually see him as a person. The main arguments are:
1: He Killed Her Mom. Regardless of why, he caused her life to take an awful spin for a while. Plenty of ppl think she should never forgive him bc of this.
& 2: He was really young, 15 when he started working for Shido & 16 when he killed Wakaba. Manipulated to hell and back, can he really be blamed for his actions?
Both are valid points in some respects, but 1 is too simplistic and 2 is too dismissive. No, being young doesn't absolve him of his guilt. But it also complicates it & makes it so that saying he is the end all be all evil is unreasonable, thus discounting point 1.
So we end up at a stalemate. By these points, should she forgive him or should she say "fuck you, get out of my life"?
I say neither, because I believe the most important factor for whether she would want to be friends with him is based upon how she feels about him as a person. All Else Ignored, what does she think about him? Aka if he were just a normal teenager, none of that baggage connected, how would she feel about him?
And THAT, in my mind, is the key to the futago siblings headcanon.
In my opinion, I think she would like him. He pisses her off, but she LIKES that in a friend. See how she interacts with Yusuke, for example. Akechi would be able to challenge her in a way that no one else can. No, not even Makoto. Because he's not only smart, but he's also an asshole. Makoto is too nice to her. Futaba wants someone she can really butt heads with. It's FUN for her. Add in the fact that he's also a big Featherman nerd aka one of her special interests and BOOM. Instant friend material.
The earlier points don't disappear, but now they're added to. If she didn't like him as a person, 1 would outbalance 2, and thus she would want nothing to do with him. But adding in a genuine enjoyment of him as a person, it makes point 1 matter less. Point 2 still doesn't absolve him, but it explains it & makes sympathy possible. And by that, if he expresses genuine regret at his actions, then point 1 can be... perhaps not forgiven, not immediately at least. But accepted. She can live with it for the sake of their friendship.
Of course, I'm making a lot of assumptions with this analysis. With my interpretation of them, Akechi is the kind of person Futaba would enjoy being friends with, and Akechi's perplexed by her, but doesn't hate her. It's a rocky road to friendship, but with persistence and care, I think they could get there. And I personally enjoy their potential friendship enough to want to work for it. I rest my case.

Decided to draw all the Persona 5 masks from the front and realized that Akechi’s prince outfit mask looks similar to the emblem on the front of the featherman outfits. God he’s such a nerd xD

After Shido dies he actually leaves Akechi quite a large amount of money. Akechi doesn't want anything to do with it at the beginning, but he ends up using it to fund a group home and resources for abused children.
Akechi, around his late 30's - 40's, making (slightly burnt, uneven) pancakes for a group of children he refuses to let scrape by with cup noodles and pre-packaged meals, lively chattering and teasing that in some institutions wasn't even allowed when he was a kid echoing through the house, a radio playing some cheesy pop song he hates, but the kids love it, some even singing along so he leaves it on, waving a spatula around as he's breaking an argument, the kids jokingly talking back and sticking their tongues out at him, the loud goodbyes as they leave for school after eating, finally find a purpose in his life being someone he desperately needed when he was a child.
#persona 5#akechi goro#Let older Akechi be soft after shorting out his shit#The rest of the gang is ofc 100% behind this and helps out all the time#Mona is undying because of metaverse fuckery and he becomes the unofficial maskot#Kid with sleeping problems? They can't understand him but Mona lays on top of them telling to go to sleep#I headcon Akira is in culinary school post canon and he pops in at least once a week to give the kids decent meals#Ann takes them shopping and has fun all the time with them#I also headcon she plays a villain in a future featherman adaptation so free tickets and autographs!!#Ryuji is already the best boy/big bro so you know he's always there for them#Yusuke is that crazy aunt who is really into arts and crafts#But he's an actual respected artist#Makoto becomes a cop unfortunately bc I find her reasoning cute and this is fiction so whatever#And is always ready to protect them if anything happens/directs children from cases/helps find abused/neglected kids#Futaba too she hacks for evidence to make sure children are safe and those who hurt them are exposed#But she also comes over to play video games and nerd out with the youth ™#Haru is an official sponsor ™ and also teaches you the kids to make a vegetable garden in the back#Often coming to help when she gets stressed out with being a rich ceo ™#Sumi is sweet but kinda awkward sometimes but always does cool tricks and cartwheels for them#Even teaching some nice tricks#I just have a lot of feelings#This works with all pairings but I'm just leaving my polythieves agenda here

The Phantom Thieves and their weapons
One thing that’s really bugged me lately is the fact that the phantom thieves just,, have weapons. In real life. And they buy them irl so they don’t just disappear when they leave the Metaverse. So here are some headcanons about how the heck they deal with that.
Akira
Akira is lucky because he just has knives. Those are pretty easy to hide in his bag, so he usually goes with that.
He’s gotten a lot more careful over the course of the year. A kid seeing a random dagger in his bag within the first week of being at Shujin lead to some rumors about him being a psycho knife wielding killer, and ever since that knife stays very buried until they’re in the metaverse.
Ryuji
Ryuji starts out with excuses. A baseball bat? Yeah he’s been trying to get better at the batting cages ever since the track team ended. A crowbar? His mom needed help with something that got stuck.
Unfortunately, as his weapons get stronger they also get harder to explain. Everyone already thinks he’s a delinquent though, so a lot of the time they just kind of shake their heads.
“At least he’s not hurting anyone?” “He’s just kind of a weird guy.” “Don’t mess with Sakamoto I guess”
Ann
Ann. Poor Ann. Because when high school boys see a pretty girl with a whip, their minds go to exactly one place, and honestly the rumors about her were already pretty bad.
She’s pretty mortified, honestly. The first time someone asks about the whip and alludes to some. *cough*. Interesting hobbies, she turns bright red and snaps at them. This, of course, leads to some more comments along the same lines
By the end of the year, people are pretty much convinced she’s a dominatrix, and at some point she stops trying to shut down the rumors. It never worked with Kamoshida, and now people are just a little intimidated by her. Let them think what they want.
Yusuke
Absolutely no one questions that Yusuke has an ever-growing katana collection. Anyone who sees him carrying around his weapon just kinda shrugs and goes “yeah that checks out, he’s weird”
Makoto
At first, Makoto has an easy time hiding her weapons, and explaining them when she can’t. After all, she takes self defense classes. It’s her version of pepper spray, she explains. A little extreme, but everyone accepts it and talks about how badass the student council prez is.
Then the brass knuckles get spikier, and then they turn into gauntlets and thats, uh,, harder to explain.
She starts pretending that she’s a cosplayer, and those are different armor and weapon styles she’s trying out. Of course, this prompts people at ask questions about it, and she gets Futaba to teach her about cosplay so she can lie a little easier
Sae would like to know where this hobby came from. Is she really not home so much that she missed this new hobby entirely?
Haru
Hiding an axe is a massive problem in the beginning. How is she going to explain that to her dad when they’re literally in the process of changing his heart?
She ends up leaving it at school whenever she can, because at least it’s a little less weird for the gardening club to have an axe. Not by much, but a little bit.
Makoto is the one who has the idea to put it in an instrument case. It takes a while to find a case that’s big enough, but eventually the sight of Haru walking around with a case for an upright base is a common sight.
Unfortunately, the band kids want to know how long she’s been playing, and then they want her to join the school band, and there’s really no explanation for why she can’t… so Haru ends up learning how to play the upright bass as a cover.
Bonus: Akechi
This boy uses a literal lightsaber, so I have to imagine it just looks like a lightsaber hilt in the real world. Easy enough to stash in a bag or even a coat pocket.
He’s secretly a big nerd so anyone close enough to notice a collection of lightsabers just assumes it’s a featherman thing and doesn’t ask about it. He’s touchy about people calling him out on his nerdiness.

My Akechi headcannons (but only the dorky ones)
-Akechi never learned to tie his shoes
He has Velcro on his black mask shoes but no one is ever close enough to see it
Ofc his mom tried to teach him but he never caught on
-I’ve seen this one elsewhere but this boy is a Featherman nerd
Akechi almost named himself grey pigeon as his code name
Also long arguments with Futaba about Featherman shipping
-going off of the last one he wrote edgy fanfic in middle school
Don’t question my word. Don’t.
-he has literally never played a single video game in his life
The only reason he’s good at gun about is well, you know, Metaverse
PLEASE ADD MORE!! Headcannons are always fun :)

“Don’t you dare fuck this up for me, Kurusu.”
Oh. That’s a voice he hadn't expected to hear today.
Featherman cosplay contests are serious business to Akechi. Akira is never serious about anything but he's willing to indulge the nerds he loves.
