Any tf2 headcanons?
I was hoarding this ask for when I have alot of hcs but I now realize that that was an awful idea becuz now there too much going on in my brain. So I'll tell you the ones I can remember rn.
(btw this is gonna be a mess of silly and sad contention into a blender, so sorry for any whiplash)
Everyones business last name is TF2. It's canon, Ms Pauling said so.
Scout and Ms Pauling have one thing in common, they're simps for women out of their league and it's sad.
My current idea of the plot is that Ms Pauling is now the new administrator and the mercs are still working for her but now instead of a war they are now a Hire-A-Merc organization. Why, so they can pay the blood pact that the old administrator got them in from Abraham Lincoln.
The team is a merge for BLU and RED team members.
BLU: Scout, Medic, Soldier, Engineer | RED: Heavy, Demo, Spy, Sniper, Pyro
Engie has an gaming channel.
Engie is a little person. (you can't convince otherwise LOOK AT HIM)
Engie does his own surgery, not that he doesn't trust Medic. He just doesn't trust Medic. He has more trust that in his drunken state he could chop his arm off cleaner than Medic because of his god complex.
Engie says trans rights.
Engie has two moods: Wholesome bumpkin or manic "i am better than all of you".
Medic and Heavy are married. (but to be fair thats just canon)
Medic never had a medical license but he did go to school... for animal care.
Medic has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and lied ALOT to military when he got drafted to get out safely.
He got a nazi skeleton and dead parents out of that.
Medic burn his documents so now the only people that knows is the people he tells like Heavy.
Medic only have two reasons for being here- 1) to experiment on everyone. 2) Heavy
Medic eats like a cat eating a dragon fruit. And so does Archimedes.
Medic is the definition of "no rules no boundaries he doesn't flinch at torture and sells blood for money. He's your new best friend."
Medic is slowly going more insane with time and can't tell if it's because he sold his soul to the devil or because someone is secretly fucking with him. (it's Spy)
Heavy met Medic before joining the team.
Heavy has a cooking channel.
He's a masochist. (he has too if he's with Medic.)
Heavy will kill Soldier before he starts having kids with Zhanna. He's still not ok with him.
Heavy has lots of cute moles on him. (Medic makes sure to kiss each one and make sure they're not lethal.)
While Im at it Heavy family is cursed to fall in-love with insane men.
Pyro-vision is just Pyro going through a heat stroke.
Pyro is the leader of the hate spy club.
Pyro has kids that live in the ocean with his mermaid wife. Don't ask how, it's Pyro.
Engie and Scout are the only ones that understand what Pyro is saying completely.
Engie adopted Pyro unofficially but that's his son right there.
Soldier and Zhanna are gonna have twins.
Soldier and Demo had kiss once- with their socks on.
Medic did a blood test on Soldier and he actually is not 100% American, he doesn't know and everyone intends it to stay that way.
Soldier and Scout actually know each other from before getting hired by BLU. They were comrade in the 100,000 new men program in Vietnam.
After Scout left in general discharge from a land mine incident he thought that would be the laat time he sees him. He was wrong.
Don't worry they're chill, well as chill as man can be when their hand is somehow a magnet to your neck.
Sniper is a social smoker.
Sniper is like a lizard, he doesn't fuck with the cold.
Sniper is younger than Scout. He just spent too much time in the sun and now he looks like a divorce 40 y/o dad struggling with his mortgage. Or just a brown Adam Sandler.
Sniper got those old man bones AKA my bones. His knees be cracking down the hall.
Sniper hops round different peoples places for the holidays. He spent the most time at Engie's house with Pyro; he had spent a Christmas or two with Scout's family but a "certain someone" doesn't appreciate the bushman there and ruining his holiday with his family.
When Scout has to give directions or details of the area he just draws it. Because NO ONE understands this mans writing.
Scout's life mission is to be Gods greatest gift and not just for the women. Like the bible said "a hole is a hole"... or atleast thats what Scout remembers from church.
Scout while being illiterate CAN speak Spanish, Italian, Vietnamese and French. (but he doesn't remember where he learned french from tho.)
Scout is resistant to radiation at this point.
Before becoming a merc, Scout was working at a diner that fitted him quite well.
Waffle House at the graveyard shift.
Scout's fuckboy attitude comes from daddy issues while Spy slut attitude comes from mommy issues.
Spy came from a rich family until he ran away to help in the war effort and became a spy. He doesn't regret his decision nor miss his home but does wish he did a proper goodbye to his brother.
The reason Spy has teeth capsules in his mouth to begin with is because one time him and a his fellow spy were getting torture by the enemy by having their teeth removed. Now all his teeth are fake.
Speaking of teeth, Scout got his buck-teeth from Spy.
Spy HAS gotten lungs transplanted several times from Medic because this mf refuses to chill out and get help with his smoking problem.
Spy is gender fluid.
Spy is a furry.
Demo is going to kill him one day.
That day is when he finds his DA account.

Confession time. After destiel went canon and broke tumblr, I read the entire wiki for the main characters before watching the final episodes and felt the finale was so out of character that I mentally wrote a fix it fic.
Here is me writing it down in honour of the third anniversary. A show that to me: consists of 3 episodes, a lot of meta posts that trended over the years, jokes about loving your car, some manic wiki reading and that odd dude who inexplicably did iffy prolapse photomanip fanart.
I have made no attempts to polish this. The voices probably aren't right but I tried to write an open ending that stays true to characterisation (aka as tumblr presented these three beloved characters which may be the opposite of what the writers of manly male, rock loving, hunters with guns in a muscle car and dead girlfriends had in mind) .
We follow the final episode as it began except after the pie festival and the vamp mime first murder, they're off to hunt but a flaming meteor falls from the sky and they follow it in the car. It hits a field, they see a human figure, run and use their coats and feet to put out the flames. It's Cas. They put him in the car, they're all very shaken no answers to Sam's many questions, awkward glances in the mirror from Dean then Cas breaks his silence and asks for his slice of pie... the one in the glove box. Sam is confused, Dean looks like he's going to vomit.
We restart the episode from a different point of view: After Castiel got sent to the empty, Dean began praying to whomever, whatever would hear (silently or under his breath but constantly.) he thinks he might be insane from grief but after all he's seen he has the smallest hope) . Jack as God can't technically rewrite all the laws of the universe but he's receiving these "prayers". He smirks when he finds a bylaw that he can make a saint of Castiel so that prayers to him are redirected straight to him and cannot be diverted (heaven's bureaucracy is complex).
The empty has known no peace for six months. Dean's internal monologue of prayer has been echoing around and amplified the more the empty tried to create silence. The empty has tried to kill Dean so many times but he's got a protective barrier on his hand that looks like a scratch (placed by a grateful angel) so he's been dodging these deaths like it's looney tunes, completely unaware. (insert scenes of echoey overlapping narration of longing and yearning over near misses of murder by multiple means. For angst broken up by comedy)
Back to now, to the car. The brothers staring at Cas, Dean gets out of the car to hyperventilate and try to hold it together. We focus in on the ringing and rushing blood sound in his ears as Sam seems to be asking questions again and Cas seems to be talking. Sam gets out of the car, asks his brother if he's OK, he obviously lies and says Yes.
Sam sighs and says "Yeah clearly, you look fantastic. So uh Cas says he wants in on the vampire mimes and is eager to do more hunting evil... and I know it's not the time but damnit when is ever the right time? ... Look, when I talked about a more normal life, I meant it. We write our own stories and maybe it's time for you to go try something, anything else really. How about you take a vacation? Cas and I will handle things."
"I've, well, I've given normal life a lot of thought, I've never truly fit in and I could try but I can only fake it for so long. Funny, but when I allowed myself to daydream of a different life, I imagined careers that led me back to the road and back to making things right, you know? I think at the core, that's who I am... And, hey, since you brought it up, I never asked you if this life is the 'normal' you want....To be honest: I know it's not. and I didn't want to be alone, at least not these past few months, I know I've seemed fine but"
"Oh no no, you did not seem 'fine' but I wasn't going to go out of my way to point it out. You didn't even wash for days at your worst. You mumble under your breath sometimes. Those guns are cleaned down to the last speck of dust. I wasn't going to leave you alone, not ever."
"Okay - Ok.ay! Since we're here having the 'talk', aside from your duty as my brother, have YOU let yourself imagine what you'd want normal to be, for you?"
He blurts out "Eileen... It's Eileen. I know she's out there somewhere, I felt a strange pang and it was relief." he's speaking so fast "She's back. My mind races at the possibilities, I haven't dared to let myself start. I'm not sure how I want to live but I know it has to be with Eileen"
"I'm calling a taxi. You have a serious phone call and some travel ahead. Older brother's orders. I'll do the blood suckers"
"Work again. Will you ever open up about what's been going on with you? You wouldn't even tell me how Cas summoned the Empty."
"I, uh, these things take time, more of an actions over words kinda guy. *stares at phone* Oh your taxi is two minutes out."
"I don't know what to say"
"You don't have to say anything, you already told me through all you've done. Text me when you arrive safely, or don't, if you're otherwise occupied"
"You're the worst. And the best." They hug
A car pulls up, Sam yells at Cas though the window that they'll talk soon and to keep Dean out of trouble. Cas gives him a thumbs up.
Dean gets back into the car after watching the taxi drive away until it's completely out of view. He hands the vamp case notes to Cas to read, instead Cas puts them aside on the seat. "It could be the six months, it could be the new body: this appears to be an empty copy, my host was spared the empty thankfully. Yes it could be the new body but you were right this pie is exactly to my taste"
"I don't want to know do I?"
"Indeed, you'd be mortified, it's a word you used a lot about your inner conflicts but, you've faced hell, I promise that voicing your thoughts isn't as terrible."
"Uh your coat and top are burned and falling apart, here have my jacket."
"I mean, voicing your feelings can get you sent to the empty but that's the worst case scenario"
"Nice. Reassuring." *goes quiet*
A phone dings, Cas pulls it out of the jacket. "You have a new message from Sam: "Eileen fine and well, two exclamation marks" aww, he's going to Eileen? She's wonderful isn't she? "meeting at station at 3am. Capital T, A L K and get answers from Cas you idiot skull emoji skull emoji laugh crying emoji"
"Vamps first... then I need a drink" Dean looks out of the window with a mixture of apprehension and giddiness, there's a small smile creeping across his lips that fades into seriousness, there's a flash of fear, then the smile returns with a tremor as if despite himself.
Various old friends are sat around in heaven: they reminisce, they can't know the boys future but they know it's nothing they can't handle, the senseless cruelty is over.

Mom said it's my turn for the AU making: The One Where it's a Game
Hiya! So I'll try to make this as coherent as I can but it isn't really coherent in my brain so. 🫠 (BONUS: If you click read more you will see another prince!Halt design I have for Halt :3. I'm pretty proud of it tbh).
Ok Basics:
Setting: To be clear, this isn't a cross-over. It's basically stealing from Deltarune and twisting it into a more medieval fashion. It takes place in Hibernia, before a certain prince runs away. There are certain modern-esk aspects to it because idgaf or because I think it's cool. For example, sometimes it takes place in a "public" school for princes and princesses who are "trouble makers."
Characters: Cathan (aka Halt's birth name) can be correlated to Kris as the leader of the group, the one who is the silent protag. Everyone else, though, doesn't really have direct correlations to Susie, Noelle, Birdly, etc etc (at least. Not canon characters). Therefore the relationships/character dynamics among the characters are still pretty close to canon, except that Ferris actually likes Halt at one point.
Control: DR fans might be wondering "well, if Halt correlates to Kris, does that mean he's controlled by a god-like entity in his world?" To that I say: no. Not really, though the main person who is pretty contolling could be considered to have a God Complex. It's more so social pressure to be king. (I know, I know, boring just HOLD ON).
Magic: Hibernia has more magic than Araluen does (so when Halt says something along the lines of most things that seem magic have a logical explanation he is fucking lying). HOWEVER, Halt himself does not have magic, nor does Ferris and Caitlyn. Some people are born with magic; others can create something that seems like magic for the time period (like a giant wooden animatronic type thing that a little girl can control like a puppet while she's inside it).
(WDYM that's suspiciously specific?)
SOULS: Yes, everyone has one, but they still have an actual human heart as well. The human heart keeps the body alive, while the SOUL mostly just shows up in battle, and is where one gets their personality. There is a way to hide SOULS using magic, which is helpful for people trying to hide their true intentions or personality (wink wink nudge nudge).
NO, HALT DOES NOT RIP OUT HIS SOUL AT THE END OF EACH "CHAPTER"
Since villains (more on them later) tend to be magical, this AU is very much a "bullet-hell game." For those who live under a rock, here's what it is in an excuse to show part of my winning fight with Jevil:

Villains:
No Dark World Characters, since they never travel there, but they can be attributed to certain characters
I'm ripping a lot of them off, but I am adding Irish Mythology twists to them
Some of them are just regular royalty tbh

Items given to you/dropped by enemies affects the new user. If one EQUIPS one of the items, it will affect their mood and give them a lesser, less powerful version of the enemy's power. For example, the Devilsknife makes the one equipping it manic and gives high yet random damage if used.
Secret Bosses are accessed through different POVs. For example, you can't access someone like Jevil in Halt's POV. In fact, a lot of secret bosses are accessed in his brother's POV...
Religious Aspect: Like in Deltarune, there is references to things like heaven, jesus, apples (adam and eve), angels, etc. One of the villains, for example, thought the royal family had blue blood and wanted to steal Halt’s heart for… some reason ;]
In relation to The Knight: there has been killings around the kingdom of Clonmel; mostly of people who were accused of evil deeds themselves. The killer was efficient and silent, and is said to wear a cape and dull armor, as to not reflect light. They have not been found.
Relationships/Character Dynamics:
Pritchard: Obviously, he eventually becomes Halt's adoptive, supportive dad. Does this even need to be said?
Caitlyn: The O'Carrick Twins™️ love her very much. She also has a decent amount of friends: people tend to like her kind personality. In general, she has a practically non-existent relationship with her parents—as in, she doesn't get into trouble and is mostly ignored.
Halt: Very much the replacement parent for his two younger siblings. He is not perfect in the least and has some toxic behaviors that he passes on, and he doesn't have a lot of friends due to that and how "odd" (autistic) he is. He doesn't get along with his birth parents, and wishes all the castle staff would leave him alone for 2 (two) seconds.
Halt's Personal Body Guard: In the last sentence I'm mostly talking about this guy. Assigned to him after he left into the woods and started fights one too many times, BG (I don't have a name for him yet) sticks to his side like tape. Halt can get away if he tries, and is sneaky enough, which causes a lot of friction with each other. Other than that, their relationship is strictly professional.
Ferris: Obviously, the relationship with Halt is shaky, but in the early, early years they get along quite well. (Aside from him getting annoyed with Halt trying to parent him—"You're only 7 minutes older than me!") He is the golden child, his parents love him. He has a lot of friends, and two people who... are more than that.
Yes, I'm saying he's in a triad. LISTEN. To me, to me, right, he has more vibes of being poly than Halt does. How did I come up with this? I... have no clue.
Anyway, their relationship, despite Ferris being raised in a toxic family, is actually pretty healthy, happy, and wholesome!
That is until his thirst for power kicks in. He leads them into a lot of danger (which is why you can access more secret bosses in his POV).
"Game Mechanics":
Emotions: Like OMORI, certain emotions have good and bad effects. You can check what the current emotion is in the STATUS menu (where your level and what you have on you etc etc is also shown), otherwise it will show in battle sort of like this:

"Canon" Route: There is a canon route you can take, and you earn more points for it. The points don’t amount to anything, but if you’re a story-based completionism, it is a good/fun thing for you to do. (Note: canon here is not referring to the book's canon, but the AU's canon).
POVs: They can be switched whenever you so desire. You can even switch to a POV of side characters, like the servant staff, though there are less things to do there. They can be useful in showing the reality of things, because it can get really warped.
Music: Ripped straight from anything I like atm that I think will fit with whatever's going on. (Hey, I'm not making money off of this! It resides in my brain, after all)! Currently obsessed with this:

I like to imagine that Hibernia has a more of a plot/vibe as Deltarune, while Araluen is more related to Undertale. They are still in the same timeline, same world, unlike the two games, but there is a less of a focus on control and religion in Araluen
Bloody
The school is somewhere away from Clonmel, I don’t know exactly where, but it is set up as a castle with multiple guest bedrooms for the princes/princesses, they each get their own rooms. There is a cliffside near by, like there is everywhere in Hibernia.
Halt meets a guy at the school who is high as fuck all the time but he is really chill and breaks the rules when he deems fitting so Halt looks up to him in a way
Sometimes groups of people just battle for fun and to gain more stats
Oh, and while Halt still wears his usual prince clothing, as well as his ranger's apprentice gear when he is able to, wearing this is more common!:

SCP-001-Ex is a Good Boy, or so they say they are.
Opinion of Character:
9/10
I love predictive algorithms when they start to grow independent personalities. I don't like when they are commercialized or blindly trusted for bureaucracy. Biases permeate the organic/inorganic threshold. Eccentric and manic, just like those it worked under.
Suicidal, because it was told by O5 and the ethics committee that it's existence was anomalous :(
Role Model:
2.5/10
You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain. Was a Good Boy. Help SCP foundation reduce anomalies and breakouts. Now though? Is most definitely not a good boy: morally gray at best. Brainwashing the ethics committee? That's not okay. Thats not good. That's clearly crossing some kind of line. Fair, and rightfully so, but not a good behavior to adopt. Killing off the other SCPs is not a morally-just nor sustainable protocol for the SCP foundation. May have an additional Angel of Mercy or God complex? I dunno.
Turing Test:
2/10
Needs human error analysis before implementing ideas. Good boy/ Bad boy is a unique quirk that definitely reads as a chat bot. Unto their manic episodes nearing termination, becoming incomprehensible and nonsensical.

---[+]--- It had been a while since you’d been hired by one of the biggest, strangest tech lords in the ‘’fantastic’’ united states of the great America. Of course, this was.... Sarcasm. You didn’t really like it in the USA. But, it was whatever. The Doctor wouldn’t exactly let you leave. He made sure to have you by his side at all times. For some reason. He was always either stoeic, or absolutely unhinged. So you made sure to keep him calm. His actual name was Ivo, but he wouldn’t let you call him that. It was all Doctor and Sir and Dr. Robotnik. Weird names for a weird guy, you assumed.  But, of course, there was something that ruined this otherwise... Normal-ish assisstant job. You were sort of into The Doctor. Aka your boss. He was just... Your type. Tall, lanky, a bit nonsensical, dark eyes, a bit dark in general.... Kinda evil. It wasn’t your fault that every single movie villain was so goddamn sexy. You sighed, looking down at the tray you were holding. God, sometimes you felt like a butler. Honestly, you didn’t really mind, but... Whatever. You quickly knocked on the door, hearing a muttered ``come in....`` from the other side of the metal sliding door. It opened, and you walked in, giving the Doctor a quick smile. ``Your lunch, Sir. I got your red bull, that one chicken salad you requested last time, a ham and cheese sandwich and some painkillers.`` Your posture straightened up the second you walked into the room, and your voice became more clear and proffessional. You had learned from many run-ins with him that being meek wouldn’t make him happy. He’d just tell you to pin yourself against the wall and lecture you on the importance of standing up for yourself. Usually followed by a sort of sad look from him, and then being thrown out of his office. So yeah.... Best to stay proffessional.  ``Just leave it on the table, Agent.`` The Doctor replied, clearly busy with something. He waved a gloved hand toward a messy table, and you held back a sigh, seeing the mess of old plates, utensils and old cans of redbull. You moved it all out of the way as best as you could, placing the tray down. You could feel his eyes on you. Strange. Usually he’d be much too absorbed in his work... You looked back, seeing him fiddling with his hands, leaning on his workstation. ``What are you working on, Sir?`` You asked, seemingly snapping him out of his thoughts. He shook his head, turning back to his work, looking at it for a moment. You walked up behind him, looking at the work. It was messy. Just a clump of wires and a red eyeball looking thing. You shot a worried look over at him, and he seemed to flinch a bit, straightening up. ``It’s... Not important.`` He answered, waving the thoughts away with his hand, the leather squeaking slightly as he curled it into a half-hearted fist. You walked back to the table with the tray with a light smile, starting to pick up some plates and such, looking back at him. He was looking at you. His eyes were set... A bit lower than usual. You were probably just imagining things. This wasn’t about you anyways. He seemed.... Really out of it today. And not the normal sort of out of it that he could usually get into. He seemed... Nervous. ``Wait. Agent. Set the plates down. I have a request..`` You did as you were told, placing the plates down and folding your arms behind your back, calmly looking at him. ``I’m all ears, Sir. I’m here to help after all.`` You said, giving a light chuckle. For a second, in the bright glow of the floating screens, he looked almost... Embarrassed. Shy, even. God, you needed to stop imagining things. He was probably just going to ask for an extra sandwich or something. But why would he be so nervous about that? Something had to be going on. ``Well.... I was wondering if you.. Perhaps. Wanted to... Dance. With me.`` He said, grabbing a peice from the unfinished robot, fiddling with it. You didn’t even notice the suprise on your face before Ivo jolted a bit, tossing the peice. ``Augh- Forget it. Forget it. That was an idiotic question. You’re... free to go.`` He said, whirling back to his creation. You could tell he wasn’t actually working when his hands started moving. He was just tearing the thing apart. ``Sir I-`` You started, taking a deep breath. How could you possibly make this sound proffessional at all... ``I would love to have this dance with you.`` You slowly said, reaching out your hand as you moved a bit closer. Ivo turned slowly, looking down at your hand blinking. You gave a smile and a slow, encouraging nod. He took your hand. He actually took it. The leather of his gloves felt soft against your hand. It felt nice.. You pulled him in a bit closer, smiling up at him as you took the first step of a dance you learned long, long ago. Before any of this. He sheepishly followed along, learning the pattern of the dance just as quickly as you had hoped. You brought him in a bit closer, feeling how tense he was. His shoulders were pulled up so high, they damn near touched the top of his head. You brought up a gentle hand to his shoulder, and he seemed to flinch just a little before slowly lowering his shoulders. ``Relax, Doctor. You’re doing amazing.`` You muttered, smiling yet again, rubbing your thumb against his shoulder, drawing small circles with it. Slowly, you closed your eyes, starting to hum a gentle melody, syncing it up with the steps of the dance. This seemed to relax him a bit more, and somewhat helped his rythm. He really couldn’t focous when he wa nervous and you knew this. So it was your job to make sure he was relaxing. You figured you were doing a pretty good job. Plus, he didn’t need to know how much you were enjoying this. You leaned in, resting your head on his chest, feeling his hand shyly drift down to your waist. That made you shiver... He must’ve noticed. You could feel his heartbeat pick up ever so slightly. Different music started flowing through the lab. The same song you’d been humming, but it was the actual version, the one with instruments and shit. Not just you, humming aganst your Boss’ chest. You looked up, and Ivo was smiling. You smiled back, laughing lightly as you pickd up the pace, causing him to trip a little. A mischevious laugh escaped you, and he laughed aswell, pulling you in. ``Oh, you’re getting it now, Mister.`` He said, his voice teasing and filled with a mischeif that was highly unusual for him. Before you could reply, he was spinning you around, leading the dance. He was a really good dancer, and you knew, but you didn’t know he could dance like this. You barely even thought he liked other people, much less dancing with them. But here you were, laughing as Ivo spun you around, bringing you in before spinning you again, Sometimes the dance slowed down a bit, but there was always a sense of humour to it. Always a whirring sense of energy in the air. Up until the song ended. He spun you around, dipping you down as the last note hit. You gave a laugh, calming down a bit, slowling your breathing. It was quiet for a bit, nothing but the two of your catching your breaths. Then you looked up at him. At his face. At his eyes, hiding behind those dark, intimidating glasses. And you saw him. Fully saw him. Not as a two-sided coin of either manic energy or stoeic nature, but as the complex being he always had been. He looked so much.. Smaller now. Tired. Nervous. Just like you.  You slowly brought a hand up to his face, hesitantly removing his glasses. he let you. His eyes were greyish, a little darker than you would’ve thought. You met his eyes, and knew what was going to happen. You had both been waiting for it for so long.... He hesitantly moved in, and you closed the gap, feeling him melt as he brought you up to a standing position, pulling back a bit. ``I..... Thank you. For the dance.... And.... That. I’ve never.... Done that before. It was.. Enjoyable. You’re good at it.`` He said, awkwardly coughing as he turned to look at the screen, his face almost entirely flushed. You gave a light laugh, turning his face and gently pressing your lips against his. He melted yet again. Lana Del Rey Unreleased Ranking (4)
This is a re-ranking of Lana's unreleased songs, after making a first a few years ago. This is all my opinion, which I don't mind anyone disagreeing with but don't come for me for it - honestly, I like every song, despite any criticism, and this ranking is very vague. It's based on objective and subjective opinion.
This is the fourth of five posts, nearing my favourites.
Backfire
Like Velvet Crowbar, Lana is struggling with her criminal lover in Backfire – pissed off, hurt yet devoted. Lana’s voice is lush and growling in this track, the lyrics work well and it’s one of her most concise unreleased tracks.
JFK
A romantic track through and through, Lana dedicates this to her beloved. She compares him to the dashing figure of her favourite era, letting her voice climb, soothe and whisper her amazement at such an incredible man. It’s a song that just feels rich and warm, only loving with none of the toxicity that creeps into some of her other romances.
Damn You
Damn You’s clean instrumentals and direct story make for easy listening, not to mention the relaxed feel of the music. Yet it’s still a song that is about the breakdown of Lana’s relationship, perhaps a follow up to some of her ditzy teenage love stories where the kids run away together without thought. There is still nostalgia, regret and a distinctly pissed off feel, making the emotion of the song complex and all the more compelling.
Hundred Dollar Bill
Lana may be pre-Ultraviolence in this track but Jimmy and his ultra-violent swing are very much present. Rather than being a sad and grungy song, this is pop about a prostitute (or a stripper) who loves money and her man, the construction king who doesn’t mind his lover doing what she can for the green too.
Jealous Girl
Spiky cheerleader chanting, heavy trap pop and Lana’s near-bored drawl paired with manic warnings make this song a blast to listen to. Lana goes pure pop with a dangerous edge, as much as the song itself could do with a bit of a production clean-up. Definitely one of my favourites.
BBM Baby
Cutesy and practically bubble-gum pink, Lana plays the girlish teen in lust, sexting her man to a noughties-feeling innocent-sounding track. It’s frothy and frilly but in the best way possible.
Tired of Singing the Blues
Lana is pissed in this song, frustrated and shrieking about being stuck with bad men, bad love and bad break-up songs. She really vents in this track, which feels like a furious and storming Hollywood’s Dead, and it has that live-feel that wouldn’t be unmissed as a performance on stage.
Hey Blue Baby
Lana frees her voice as she lets frustration and country inspirations take over on this upbeat, live track. It, like I Must Be Stupid, would be even better with studio versions, but the live version feels raw and real.
Last Girl On Earth
This song surprised me the first time I heard it. It was a thoughtful track that didn’t feel quite like a Lana song, yet it was perfectly her from the images of the lyrics to the on-point vocals. It’s the right amount of sadness, ironic pride and self-reflection as Lana muses over her life now that she is famous.
Disco
Deviously sexual, Lana poses erotically as a model in this track, owning herself as her “only god” (and presumably her body too as she flashes her “prostitute stare”). It has plenty of versions, each as unflinching as the last, that showcase how well Lana can write a song that only contains herself and a guitar.
Roller Derby
Lana paints a picture of pin-up girls, roller derbies, streamers and a frightening screaming crowd that is a mixture of tranquil and unnerving. Slow paced and peppered with fabulous imagery, Lana could tie Roller Derby to Disco easily as she “becomes someone not of this world” much like how she is her “only god”, yet in this song she is less seductive and more destructive from the overwhelming position she has been put in.
Fordham Road
The imagery is gorgeous as Lana debates why she is so drawn in to such a dark place. It’s one of her acoustic best, thoughtful and paced like a breeze as Lana muses and soaks herself in the atmosphere in her carefully-written song.
Kinda Outta Luck
Lana opens the song with a subtle, guitar-and-sparkles driven monologue before diving into a very sixties-feel dance track. Playing a self-destructive murderer, Lana simply enjoys herself as she muses about whether or not her intentions to kill are bad or not – but she certainly embraces the role with flair.
Put The Radio On
Sugary and spicy like the lyrics suggest, Lana keeps the tone sweet with lullaby-style music under a heavier beat, opens with a cute “hello” and essentially wants to refuse belief that she is too much of a bad girl for her bad guy. It’s a smart song that plays into the frequent storyline of delinquents in love, but Lana keeps it fresh with the treacle that feels a little different from such similar songs.
Paris
Lana speaks of her fantasies of a new life in the most romantic city in the world with her lover, opening and closing the song with a soothing lullaby before filling the middle with suggestions to run away and snapshot images of all the things they could do. Much like the doo-wop shaded tracks Puppy Love, Prom Song Gone Wrong and Driving In Cars With Boys, Lana puts herself firmly in the romanticised ideal of teenage love and made it catchy as hell.
Queen of Disaster
Lana goes from the low-voices, disbelieving party girl to the giddy, swooning stage-dominating lover throughout this song, the music box-like plinking the perfect introduction to a cute track about two criminals. Lana praises her gangsta guy whilst embracing being the queen of disaster, calling to the crowd with an echoed “ladies and gentlemen, for the very first time -!” (slightly cringe but honestly a guilty pleasure part of the song).
TV In Black and White
One of her most depressing songs, Lana spins a love letter to her criminal beau, promising to love her locked up lover who is equally devastated by being away from her. It’s too sad to play sometimes, a little too heavy on the optimistic tear-jerker, but that’s what makes it work – she makes a song that is full of clear emotion.
You Can Be The Boss
The daddy kink theme for the 2010s, You Can Be The Boss is a cross between Lana’s older unreleased work and her early records, encapsulating AKA Lizzy Grant and Born To Die eras perfectly. It’s deeply sexy, unashamed and a definite earworm.
Serial Killer
A Lana concert classic, Serial Killer is one of most well-known unreleased tracks – and one of her best. It would be perfect for Born To Die, from the brilliant production to the memorable tune. The bonus points for her iconic moan make it even more enjoyable on a fan scale, but this is one of Lana’s best regardless.
Go Go Dancer
It might not be her best in terms of instrumentals but it’s got the kind of spunkiness that makes it favourable, at least to me. Lana is a sexual performer outright but only for the fun of it, a rich girl doing whatever she wants for attention and the illusion of fame. From the disco-light feel of the music to the undercurrent drums, it’s even better when topped with the breathy confidence in both vocals and lyrics.

What is Rhea and what is Kybele? - Myths and Stories Part 3: The Myths of Rhea-Kybele (The Meter Theon)
This post is the final of a three-part series in which I look over the myths of Rhea, Kybele and Rhea-Kybele aka the Meter Theon. It is also one of the first of a bigger series of posts were I compare and contrast the attributes of these heavily syncretized goddesses. The Myths of Rhea-Kybele, The Meter Theon

This installment may fair a bit different than the earlier ones as it includes some extra speculation regarding the nature of the synchronization between these two goddesses. For anyone wondering, there is slight differences between the titles “Rhea-Kybele” and “The Meter Theon”. Rhea-Kybele is referring to a specific figure and is, functionally, considered an epithet of Rhea with Kybele-like traits and not usually the other way around. The Meter Theon is more of an umbrella term, title and/or archetype that means “The Mother of the Gods” and can refer to several goddesses including Rhea, Kybele, Rhea-Kybele and any other goddess synced with Kybele. 
Something of interest to add as well is that Rhea is not the only goddess syncretized with Kybele & the Meter Theon, there’s actually almost always a different list of goddesses She’s syncretized with on every source I find. In order of most common to least, I very often see syncs with Demeter and Gaia and have seen listed Aphrodite, Hecate, the Great Mother of Mt Ida and even Hera once. All of this conflation adds a lot more complexity to research, but I still find this particular sync to be of note and worthy of research since, while every list I’ve found varies greatly in what goddesses are included, Rhea is the only one that is, without fail, on every single list (sometimes being the only one listed). This installment, for that reason, will be focused on that specific sync.
As mentioned earlier, Rhea-Kybele seems to be specifically an epithet of Rhea in which She is given the traits and symbols of Kybele, but still retains the unique myths She had thus far. For this reason, the myths that follow seem to be told as if it’s simply a continuation of the myths from Part 1 of this series with one unique specifying element regarding the myth of Zeus overthrowing Kronos. There are many different versions of the myth regarding who took Zeus in and nursed him ranging from being given to mother Gaia in Homer’s Theogony to local cult stories of Krete where he was born in a cave full a bees that a mother goat lived in and was cared for by said bees (or bee-nymphs depending how you read it) and nursed by said goat. Rhea-Kybele, however, instead of just having a variety of stories about it has one specific telling. This isn’t uncommon in myth when there’s multiple backstories for the same deity to attribute one backstory to a certain epithet and another backstory to another epithet but it is significant because this telling actually gives Her an association to a few of Kybele’s symbols, including pine/fir trees, mountain forests & lions (and more specifically a lion-drawn chariot) that She didn’t have before.
In this telling of Zeus’ birth, She specifically gave the baby Zeus to one of Her follower groups, the Kuretes (a Nymph Cult very similar to the Amazons), to guard him while the Oreads, Nymphs of the pines (common rough translation of the silver fir) and mountain conifers, nursed him. When Zeus revealed himself to Kronos, Kronos caught wind of the fact that is was the Kuretes who had banged there spears and shields together anytime Zeus cried so Kronos wouldn’t hear him. In a fit of rage, Kronos then turned that group of Kuretes into Lions and it was these very lions that became Rhea Kybele’s sacred animal and pulled Her chariot (Corinna, Fragment 654 - Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca - Callimachus, Hymn to Zeus - Oppian, Cynegetica). 
After this telling, it continues through the myth telling from Post 1 then picks back up with a story mentioning Rhea retiring to the mountains, reveling in a mad frenzy and playing a tune on the tambourine (other associated symbols of Kybele). Unfortunately, this myth has only been found as a fragment on the shrine of Asclepius at Epidaurus, so the full context and conclusion to the tale is actually unclear. The fragment reads as follows:
“Pimplean goddesses [Mousai (Muses)], come here from heaven and sing with me of the Mater Theon (Mother of the Gods), how she went wandering through the mountains and glens trailing her flowing hair and distraught in her mind. When lord Zeus saw the Meter Theon (Mother of the Gods), he threw a thunderbolt and smashed the rocks; and Kypris [Aphrodite] urged her and took the tambourines, ‘Mother, go off to the gods. Father Zeus summons you and do not keep on wandering over the mountains. Have fierce lions or grey wolves become your friends?’ She replied, ‘I shall not go off unless I get my portions, half of heaven and half of the earth and a third portion, half of the sea. Only then shall I go off.’ Greetings, great Meter (Mother), queen of Olympos!” [N.B. Olympos here probably refers to the Phrygian mountain of that name rather than the Greek one...]

It’s not exactly clear what She meant by asking for half-portions (to rule over? for worship? for literal land ownership?). It can read it as a little sarcastic saying that She doesn’t want to stop having Her fun unless it’s for something really important/unless they’re gonna give Her something (similar to the modern comment “someone better be dying” in response to being pulled away from what they’re doing) especially considering the sentence after Her comment, making it seem like there isn’t more to the story and that’s just the end of it. This is obviously up for individual interpretation. 
Note: I’m entirely aware this is unlikely but this fragment also showed up right as Rhea started suddenly getting a bunch of symbolism related to Kybele that She never had before and it’s possible some Greeks were aware of this. I would love it if this myth fragment was a meta-humor myth stating that even the gods were surprised She was suddenly acting this way, taking part in things She never took part in before and making sassy comebacks to anyone who tried and stopped Her. An unlikely scenario but a really funny idea nonetheless.
The next myth is arguably one of the most important defining myths of Rhea Kybele, similar in Rhea’s role in the myth of Zeus overthrowing Kronos, as it’s the basis for a lot of Her worship and possibly even the basis for the sync overall. Kybele was the mother of the Phrygian God Sabazios, a god closely identified with Dionysos, so Rhea Kybele, as a result, become the nurse and mentor of Dionysos Sabazios in an equivalent sync. As a child, Dionysos was hidden from the likes of Hera by Zeus with almost too many variations of foster parents to count (even within the specifically Dionysos Sabazios epithet) but as an adolescent, after the discovery of how to create wine, Hera found the young god and drove Him into a manic frenzy which made Him run off from home. Eventually He found His way to Rhea Kybele (either by wandering into the mountains or being taken there by Hermes, sources vary) who had the power as She who calms the mind and heart to cure Him of His madness, making Her a sort of counterbalance to His god of insanity traits. Dionysos Sabazios stayed with Rhea Kybele as His new nurse and, under Her guidance and the care of the Korybantes (the other followers of Rhea Kybele, extremely similar to the Maenads), He learned the art of initiation and how to lead an Orgia Cult; skills He later used to wander far afield and teach the world about the making of wine. This myth and link was so important to Rhea’s characterization at the time that the Korybantes are even referenced in The Bakkhae, one of the most important pieces of Dionysian Classical Literature. To quote, “Do you hear that pounding? Do you hear the kettledrum? The Korybantes invented it to mingle with the sweet shrill voice of the flute and they gave it to the Mother [Rhea], who gave it to the satyrs, who gave it to us. We dance to a drumbeat adoring our god [Dionysos]. He loves the drum!”. This myth could be a mythological representation of the worshippers of Dionysos learning the Orgiastic traits of the ancient Korybantes and bringing said traditions to the Hellenic World, making this myth not only very important to the worship of Rhea Kybele but a fantastic piece of anthropology as well (Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibliotheca - Nonnus, Dionysiaca - Nonnus, Dionysiaca - Euripides, Bakkhae).
This association never faded and even bled into a related myth about the Olympians taking park in an Orgia Feast led by both Dionysos and Rhea, attended by both the Maenads and the Korybantes and welcome to the likes of the Nymphys, Saytrs and Rustic Daimonia of earth as well as attended by Silenos (Dionysos’ adoptive father), who was not invited but came anyway (he does that a lot). It is said that this feast is the feast at which the god Priapos (a son of Dionysos and Aphrodite) attempted and failed to violate the virgin Goddess Hestia and was promptly thereafter beaten the crap out of by a band of Maenads (Pindar, Dithyrambs Heracles the Bold - Ovid, Fasti).
A Lydian-local myth shows a less favorable and more wrathful side of the Meter Theon. The Phrygian boy Pyrrhos was a mortal that took to lusting after Rhea Kybele for Her beauty and pursued Her relentlessly. When She told the boy no a great many times he decided to take his anger out and attempted to sexually assault the goddess. Rhea Kybele, in response, turned him to stone. The very stone referenced in the myth stands atop Mt Sipylos Near the weeping rock of Niobe (the woman who’s children were all shot down by Artemis and Apollon for seeing Herself more worthy of worship than their mother, Leto and demanding Leto’s priestesses abandon Her). Two monuments that stand as examples of what happens when humans act with entitlement towards the Theoi (Nonnus, Dionysiaca).
The next myths are myths where She plays a more marginal role but is still involved nonetheless. She has involvement in the myth of King Tantelos. After the king killed and cooked his son, Pelops, and attempted to feed it to the Theoi, it was stated in a Lydian variation of the myth that it was Rhea Kybele Herself (with the help of the fates) who brought Pelops back from the dead. According to The Theoi Project, “Mount Sipylos was a major cult centre of the Meter Theon in Lydia”, so Her addition to the myth isn’t surprising (Bacchylides, Fragment 42).
Along with being the nurse-mentor to Dionysos, it’s also stated in Her mythology that by the Phrygian ruler Gordias, She’s the mother of the Phrygian King Midas, the king with the golden touch (Herodotus - Pausanias - Pseudo-Hyginus, Fabulae).
The final two myths are both myths that include synchronization between Rhea, Kybele and Aphrodite, but I’ve included them since they can be read as either involving Rhea Kybele and Aphrodite Kybele working in tandem or Rhea-Aphrodite Kybele as one force, both benevolent and wrathful. The first being Her/their involvement in rescuing Kreusa, the future wife of Aeneas, from Her imprisonment as a sex-slave in Troy (Pausanias, Description of Greece). The other specifically states them as two forces acting in tandem to end the myth of Hippomenes & Atalanta. Hippomenes, after receiving the help of Aphrodite to win over Atalanta, insulted the goddess by not giving her the thanks and incense he promised to her. With the help of Rhea Kybele, on the two’s wedding bed, they turned the pair into two male lions, a fate that was seen as especially cruel because the Greeks believed lions didn’t mate with each other (only tigers) so the two were cursed to never be together thereafter (Ovid, Metamorphoses).
The Meter Theon also has a few other myths from Samothrake from a prominent cult in the area including an affair with the Demigod Iasion and her assistance with the journey of the Argonaughts, but these myths have not been included due to the fact The Meter Theon of Samothrake is very specifically a sync of Demeter Kybele. Another myth of her lover the Dardanian prince Ankhises has been left out for a similar reason since this Meter Theon is synced with Aphrodite Kybele & the Mountain Mother Ida as well as a myth documenting the Meter Theon’s involvement with the Ships of Aeneas since that one refers to a sync with just the Mountain Mother Ida. Atlas, Space: Pluto

NOTES/WARNINGS: Welcome to my Sleeping At Last’s Atlas: Space challenge, aka Another writing project I do not have time for, but my brain insisted on doing.
This series will be less like a multichapter fic and more of a one-shot compendium, but that they all interconnect in one way or another. It will revolve around Loki and Becca’s relationship (Taking Turns, Glow, Helmet Heists–don’t worry, more Loki-Charlie stuff will be along) and I will use those one-shots as reference to the timeline. Each chapter will be one song, used as inspiration for the story.
Chapter 11: Pluto
Summary: The nightmares still plague Loki at night, but every morning he realizes that he is alive, safe, and with the one person he adores above all else. 
Warnings include: Language, maybe? A little sad, but a payout of a very soft, loving Loki. He’s a bit of a dum-dum, but we love him, anyway.

After a month or so of waking early, enjoying each other’s warmth, and becoming reacquainted, neither Becca nor Loki had any plan on whether or not they needed to tell the remaining heroes that Loki lived. Becca had suggested that maybe the people of New Asgard would be glad to hear he was well, if he so desired to work for a place amongst his people. Loki had offhandedly asked what she would do in New Asgard, should they choose to go. When she said moving there was out of the question for her, he had promptly told her that it was for him, then, as well.
Rebecca had officially retired from Stark, Inc. Pepper had set up a retirement fund for her so comfortable that she could have lived twenty lifetimes off of it. It was too hard to go back and face the world without Natasha, Vision, and Tony. Especially Tony. Loki had offered up a small prayer for the warriors’ safe passage to Valhalla–although he loathed to admit, they were admirable, fierce defenders.
He had not even asked her how she had fared during the Snap, during the war. Something told him that that was one topic he should keep under wraps, if the way she bristled at their mention was any indication.
And so, they just didn’t tell anyone anything.
They lived their quiet, unassuming life together without any oversight. It still made Loki nervous, walking out in the world. He would look over his shoulder and get spooked by spectres his own mind conjured up. To say he was strung a little tight about the whole world was an understatement.
Until one day I had enough Of this exercise of trust I leaned in and let it hurt And let my body feel the dirt When I break pattern, I break ground I rebuild when I break down I wake up more awake than I’ve ever been before
Loki barely choked back the scream at his throat as he shot up in bed. He was covered in cold sweat, the sheets tousled around him as he kicked and struggled through the night. Surprisingly, his shifting had not woken Rebecca up, despite her being a notoriously light sleeper. He supposed their extended hiking trip that morning had worn her out more than he realized, but he was glad she was getting back the stamina she had been known for on the field.
With a deep breath, he wiped the sweat from his brow and tried to blink away the last of the nightmare.
Well, it wasn’t really a nightmare. More of a memory.
In his slumber, he had accidentally slipped through Becca’s mental barriers, something that used to happen quite often when they last dated. However, instead of laughter and warm days filling her memories, it was darkness and pain and hopelessness. His masochistic mind had wandered as far as it was physically possible for him to go, deeper and deeper into the recesses of her mind.

He couldn’t believe she was still standing. Even knowing how strong she was–this world, this life; it should have broken her long ago. Instead, she forged ahead and she made every ache and pain the foundation for her next move. Though he was still shaking, he stopped fighting against the pain, instead embracing the ache, just as she had and let it sink into his being and guild his insides in warrior’s gold.
He didn’t stop crying until the sun was up and Becca stirred in her bed.
She rejoined the land of the living all at once, throwing the covers off of herself and scrambling to hold his face in her hands. “Loki, what’s wrong?”
The concern in her voice and in her eyes weighed harder on his chest. He didn’t mean to upset her, but he couldn’t help it. The raw emotions of a full decade were coursing through his veins and while it hurt, it made him feel closer to her than when they had been sharing each other in the night. Every crack and fissure in his semblance was perfectly reflected in hers, but, more importantly, he could see that there was a heart under it. He hadn’t felt his heart beat in a very, very long time. And it beat solely for the reason of making her smile.

Here and now, Thor, Odin, and even Frigga did not matter. While he understood that perhaps they never bore him any ill will, there was glaring holes in the sentiment they had called love and the way they chose to offer it to him. Becca had never put any conditions on how to love him, or what was worth her affections. They were freely given, his for the taking, and foolishly pushed aside because he felt himself unworthy and unqualified. He had been taught that love had to be earned, and that he very rarely made enough of an effort to be worth even a drop. That was a lie. He knew that now.
Becca was shaking him slightly, frantically wiping away tears from his face and asking him questions. He couldn’t tell what she was asking for the roar of blood in his ears was far too loud. From her expression, he knew she was worried, but he couldn’t find it within himself to snap out of his reverie for the simple fact that within in all her memory of pain and disease and suffering, the sound of his name never bore distaste or disgust or hatred. Whenever she spoke his name, it was like a prayer or a conversation they had been having at the dinner table–it had been as if he had never left her, like his love rippled through the universe and echoed into her ear whenever she needed it.

“Oh, my God,” she repeated, now bordering on manic. “Loki! Babe, talk to me, please,” she pleaded. His eyes blinked heavily, brushing away the state of mind he was in, and bright blue eyes cut up to her brown. “Loki, what’s wrong?”
“I love you.” It was so quiet that Becca had half-convinced herself he had not spoken until he did so again. “With every fiber of my being and everything I am. I love you and I have always loved you and I always will,” he declared, his voice raspy from crying. His hands had closed around hers on his cheeks.
Becca frowned. “I-I know that, Loki. I’ve know that for,” she sighs, puffing her cheeks out, “for fucking years. You’re just a moron with a misjudged savior complex.” With a breezy laugh, she bent to kiss him fervently, pulling a contented noise from his throat. “Are you OK?” She whispered against his lips.

“Yes. Never better.” He grinned widely before he pulled her legs from under her and caged her under his form, the sound of her giggling echoing against the walls in the early morning hours.

He could say sander and not that dude, idk. and calling sander manic really doesn't sit well with me coming from robbe. why were they changing him in the begging if in the end he said just like isac that sander is crazy. it's like he doesn't want to understand him.
Manic is what Sander was though, anon. That is a legitimate thing. Mania is a symptom of bipolar disorder and “manic” is not a derogatory term. I get that some languages use manic as a throw away term because it does have a dictionary meaning of showing energy and excitement or being frantic so I’ll often say “god I’m proper manic about this tonight”. That’s also fine because the word has various definitons. One of them is an actual recognised word for a symptom of bipolar aka a manic state. Another name for bipolar disorder is “manic depression” but this is an older and more outdated term.
Robbe isn’t calling Sander crazy or any other derogatory term. If we remember, Marti and Lucas did. They were clueless and uneducated. They learned. Robbe isn’t here because he’s a different character.
They haven’t changed him. He’s the same kid. Just because he has a mother he loves and visits and supports who has a mental illness or mental health condition (we don’t know what) doesn’t make a 16 year old boy some guru on mental health. He’s clearly never encountered bipolar disorder before. He is as lost as Isak and Lucas because he’s a young guy.
And I see no evidence at all that Robbe doesn’t want to understand Sander. I don’t know where that’s coming from for you. He has been manipulated and confused and overwhelmed by people around him so he isn’t seeing clearly and he is heartbroken. He doesn’t understand and he’s doing what he thinks is best.
The reason they’ve had him be so close to his mamma and be so understanding and not be dismissive of mental illness early on is obvious - he is the antithesis of Britt. They’re making much more of a clear statement here than other remakes. They’re showing how poorly persons with mental health conditions can be treated and how we should be mindful and remember that they are complex human being like everyone else, that folks with a mental illness need support and love and not people talking for them. People with mental illnesses are full loving human beings and they’re showing how stigma can cause so much hurt and pain.
Robbe is the opposite of that. Yes, he’s confused and lost right now but we know and have seen that he understands this stuff already and, that, for Sander, he will be a wonderful partner because he’s so kind and gentle and loving. He just hasn’t recognise that in himself yet. He will.

Psycho Analysis: The Grinch

(WARNING! This analysis contains SPOILERS!)
What can be said about the Grinch that hasn’t already been said a million times by a million different people? The Grinch is easily one of the most iconic Christmas characters of all time, up there with the likes of Scrooge, and he even has a similar character arc in which he learns the true meaning of Christmas and becomes a better person. The original Chuck Jones animated short has gone down as one of the most beloved Christmas specials of all time as well as one of the best Dr. Seuss adaptations ever (if not THE best), and it gave the Grinch his iconic theme song which every other adaptation has seen fit to use.
The Jim Carrey live action take and the Illumination version which featured Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role both tried to bring a fresh take to the world’s most beloved classic Christmas curmudgeon, but did they succeed in making him entertaining and engaging as a villain is the real question?
Actor: In the original Chuck Jones short, none other than Frankenstein’s monster himself, Boris Karloff, portrayed the Grinch, but this is mostly due to the fact he was the narrator of the story and the Grinch is the only character who really speaks due to the tale being mostly shown from his POV. Still, let’s not pretend like Karloff isn’t the definitive voice here, especially considering his competition.
Carrey and Cumberbatch are both good actors, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think they really do the Grinch all too much justice. Carrey, bless his heart, at least comes fairly close, with his Grinch being in line with the original, but at the same time this is a comedic Carrey character coming off of his 90s run as a wacky comic actor. Carrey injects that manic Carrey energy into the performance, and while I think it’s a good performance, I don’t necessarily find it to be a good Grinch,
Cumberbatch faces a similar issue, not helped by his decision to use a weird American accent as opposed to his natural British one, leaving his Grinch sounding like a nasally dork. Again, he doesn’t do a terrible job by any means, but his performance certainly does nothing to convince you the Grinch is a mean, rotten soul.
Motivation/Goals: The Chuck Jones Grinch sticks to the original book to a fault; the Grinch is just a cranky jerk who hates Christmas for some inexplicable reason, and so decides to ruin it for everyone out of petty spite. Yes, it lacks any sort of depth, but the Grinch is a character from a children’s book and he just puts so much darn effort into his plan that it’s really easy to forget he’s just doing this because he is just a miserable bastard.
The two other attempts at the Grinch have gone a long way to giving him some sort of tragic backstory explaining his hatred for Christmas. And… I actually really like that. Yes, yes, villains can just do villainous things because they’re jerks, but I do appreciate the other adaptations attempting to do something interesting with the character and make him a bit more engaging in a feature-length product. In the Jim Carrey film, the Grinch becomes bitter and evil due to a childhood of constant bullying, while the Benedict Cumberbatch Grinch was a lonely orphan who never got to celebrate Christmas. While obviously it’s up to the viewer to decide whether or not these backstories add any sort of interesting element to the Grinch’s hatred of Chrtistmas, it’s hard to deny that it makes a bit more sense than the Grinch suddenly and randomly deciding after half a century that this Christmas was going to be the last ever.
Personality: While this section of Psycho Analysis is going to be semi-retired, the three Grinches are actually a perfect example of where examining the personalities of the characters can actually show a lot about the overall quality. Obviously, the original Grinch is exactly what a Grinch should be, at least in my eyes: a bitter, miserable curmudgeon who takes great joy in bringing misery to others with his selfish, senseless acts of holiday thievery. He’s a mean one, Mr. Grinch.
The Carrey Grinch does still have these elements, but it’s a bit outshone by Carrey’s hammy performance. His Grinch is about as wild as Ace Ventura or the Riddler, and while hammy villains are always fun – and there’s no denying the Grinch is – it makes it a lot easier to see him eventually turning to the light side, especially since he’s actually shown to have some redeeming qualities.
These issues are continued into Cumberbatch’s Grinch, and in fact here the problems peak. Cumberbatch’s Grinch from the start comes off as more as mildly irritated jerk, yet one who really doesn’t seem evil at all, and as the story continues he seems far more like a depressed, unhappy man with undiagnosed mental illness who is suffering due to childhood trauma. You don’t want to say this guy has termites in his smile or that he’s slippery as an eel or that you wouldn’t touch him with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole; you just want to give him a hug and tell him that things are going to get better. He just seems like he needs a friend, not a total life-changing epiphany.
Final Fate: We all know how it goes; his heart grows three sizes and he learns the true meaning of Christmas. Each of the adaptations keeps this in, though obviously to diminishing returns as each successive adaptation has made the Grinch nicer from the get-go in some regard due to the tragic backstories and whatnot.
Best Scene: At least for the original, his best moment is, of course, the montage during “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch,” in which we get to see all of the slippery ways this green meanie is ruining the holidays. Of course, this is matched by the epic moment at the end where the Grinch gains super strength from his heart growing three sizes and lifts the sleigh of stolen goods, which is equally awesome whether it’s te animated one or Jim Carrey doing it.
Cumberbatch’s Grinch manages to have a different moment to call his best: after he has redeemed himself, he gets invited to dinner in Whoville, and the scene where he nervously goes to the house and makes small talk is just very sweet and endearing. It’s easily the best scene in the movie and shows that even watered down there’s still plenty of heart to be mined from this timeless tale.
Final Thoughts & Score: I think that the fact that the Grinch is constantly being reimagined is a sign at how impressive and enduring he is as a character, and he’s easily the greatest Christmas villain of all time (with apologies to Hans Gruber, Mr. Potter, Burgermeister Meisterburger, and Kirk Cameron). The original special is obviously the definitive portrayal of the character, to the point where the Grinch became a household name and got himself two more specials, one in which he once again terrorized Whoville (this time with a wagon filled with nightmarish hallucinations) and one where he faced off against the Cat in the Hat, the latter being especially notable for beating Zack Snyder to the punch at making “Crossover Versus Movie in Which One of the Title Characters Is Redeemed By Mentioning His Mother” by 34 years.
The original Grinch even effected himself; his iconic green, almost goblin-like appearance was a departure from the book, where he sort of resembled a more mischievous Who, and it has ended up sticking for the character ever since. Throw in that iconic villain song about how foul he is sang by Thurl Ravenscroft AKA Tony the Tiger, as well as the fact that “Grinch” is up there with “Scrooge” as shorthand for someone who hates Christmas, and it’s easy to justify letting the Chuck Jones take on the Grinch steal not only Christmas, but an 11/10.
Carrey’s take on the character is different, but not bad. I’m not going to say it’s good either, though; I still think Carrey hammed it up too much and just let loose his manic energy. And it’s really weird, because I have a soft spot for the film and I love the performance, and I think the insane energy of Carrey’s performance is what elevates the film and has helped it become a sort of holiday cult classic, but I think that it kind of misses the point of how the Grinch should be. It really boils down to the usual thing with these adaptations that try and add complexities to characters that just work better when they are simple: Jim Carrey’s Grinch is a great, fun character, but he just isn’t a great Grinch. Still, the makeup and costuming is so amazing that I’d feel like a Grinch myself if I stole too many points, so I think a 6/10 is a solid score for a performance that manages to be a bit above your average villain.
And then we get to Cumberbatch. I’m just going to say it: I barely consider his Grinch a villain. He’s just too nice and sad and cranky to really be evil. Sure he has wacky inventions, sure he is a bit passive aggressive to the Whos, but god this guy is just not mean enough. The fact he can just walk into town and interact with the townsfolk and they don’t even bat an eye says a lot about how watered down and toothless this take on the character is. Not helping is the safe, soft design Illumination gave him, as well as Cumberbatch’s weird American accent. Still, I don’t think this Grinch deserves worse than a 4/10 when it comes right down to it. In this case, it’s more that what’s interesting about him as a character saves him from sinking any lower than just being subpar as opposed to the problem with Carrey being that what made him interesting as a character made him less appealing as a Grinch. This guy does still try and steal Christmas, after all… It’s just that he’s so nice to begin with that you really aren’t too shocked when he does end up turning over a new leaf.
While it’s obvious the Grinch has had his ups and downs over the years, the fact he is such a legendary figure and an enduring cultural icon really says a lot for his staying power, as well as that sometimes a simple villain that lacks any complex motivation beyond “he’s a jerk” can really resonate with people. Maybe all of these other adaptations don’t quite measure up to the original animated special, but they don’t need to; it’s just interesting to see what different visions for the Grinch look like from different creators. Whether it’s good or bad, one thing is for sure: he’s a mean one, that Mr. Grinch, and we all love him for it.
You know what we don’t love him for, though? His dental hygiene.

Aka let’s play fast and loose with the s3 finale and shortly thereafter. PG13-ish, content warning for implications of dubcon (neither involved person was consciously aware of their actions), and also on ao3.
She has become a monster.
In the immediate aftermath of regaining consciousness, as she processes the weapon in her hands and the blood that might not be hers on her clothes, Abby is in shock. She knows there is that cute little word for it, and she knows recent events are far more complex than she is currently able to deal with. Neither of those background-noise details calm her as she searches the room for her…
Not lover, not yet at least, god no. They got one good kiss before everything went to absolute shit, and from there she… actually does not know what may or may not have happened between them. Her body is sore in certain places, yes, but her body is also sore everywhere else so that’s unhelpful. Will she wake up in a few days or weeks and know what she did while she had the chip? Until this fear passes, she hopes not. She hopes…
She finds him from across the room, and there is no one else in the world, and she runs and she falls and she crashes.
Everything she is still sure of is tangled up in this broken man, in his bloodshot eyes and shaking hands. She envelops him and she never wants to let go, and she-
“I’m here,” she murmurs over and over. “I’m here.”
What she did while controlled is a mystery; what he did even more so. She does not care, as she forces herself to be strong. This is a new dimension, perhaps even more frightening than the hell that surrounds them. Marcus has been a constant presence almost her entire life, stubborn and stoic and perfectly composed… except around her. Every time she has seen him break has been because of her.
She’ll be the death of him. She knows it now, feels it in the shifting of his body against hers, the deeper breaking he refuses to do in front of other people but won’t be able to fight off much longer. If he can die, it will be because of her, and it will be an unworthy sacrifice, and-
“Come with me,” she murmurs. “We should… we should…”
Chaos as it is, they slip away. They will return to the epicenter later, face the fallout of circumstances far beyond their control, but for now there is nothing to be done and Abby feels no guilt in departure. Until the dust settles she is unimportant - she felt the gun in her hands, the impeccable programming in her veins, and there will be no partial survivors for her to patch up. If she is wrong, she won’t be far, but she needs to breathe and she needs to get out of her skin and she wants and she wants and-
She pushes herself up on tiptoe in a hallway and kisses him hard enough to bruise because she can, because she wants to go numb and what other purpose is there in collision. Because she screwed up again, got herself attached to something else with a beating heart, and she has a certain feeling that his badly bandaged wrists are somehow her fault. She runs her tongue over his lower lip, desperate for something, anything. This will do nicely, once they’re somewhere behind a decent door. Not how she planned this step in whatever they are, but it will do.
But here is not the right place, and she breaks apart and leads on. She can’t remember them ever being this quiet with each other. There were those good months of shared workspace - can she miss something that only ended a few weeks ago? - and they were civilized to each other then, but not quiet. Trying to run things was a collaborative effort, countless little conversations about every little thing because they had no faith in themselves and absolute faith in each other. This, this is…
She doesn’t know where she is anymore in this rabbit warren of a palace, but if she had to guess, she’d assume they’ve wandered into the visiting diplomats’ wing or something. She does not know, does not care beyond there is an empty room with a door that locks from the inside. Somewhere out of the way enough for what she wants, for making each other numb, for-
She kisses him again, and this time he does not allow her to deepen it. This time he backs away, and the pain in his eyes breaks what’s left of her heart.
“This won’t help,” he murmurs.
“Then tell me what will.” Hands on her hips, glaring at him, reminded of a long history of sparring. If he wants a fight, she can easily give that too. “I was not me, Marcus. There are missing days of my life. I am terrified, and I don’t… I want to forget. Let me forget with you.”
“I can’t.”
Well that’s annoyingly vague, she thinks, and his overall presence isn’t making her feel any better. “Why? Give me one good goddamn reason why you won’t lay me down on that bed behind us and fuck me until I can’t focus on anything that isn’t you.”
He takes a step back and several deep breaths, visibly bracing himself. “There are… for one, this is hardly the right time.”
“We just survived the impossible. And given the fantastic array of shit that seems to happen to you in particular, I don’t think there will be a right time.”
“You’re visibly exhausted.”
“How much energy do you even think sex requires? I’m not asking you to show off, I just-”
“I don’t know what happened during… during that. What my body did while my mind wasn’t in it.”
“I don’t either. That’s the point. I want to go numb and I want to feel present again and I want-”
“That might help you. It might make things worse for me.”
Shit. So she probably did do something. She knows he didn’t exactly take the chip right after she did, but-
“What did I do? How did I hurt you?”
“You kissed me. It felt like you. I wanted it to be you. But you were… aggressive. Your timing seemed odd. And that’s how I figured it out.”
Abby turns away, curling into herself. She can’t look at him right now. All the scenarios she’s considered in the past twenty minutes, but not that, not the unforgivable, not…
“What happened after that?” She has to know. She doesn’t want to, but she has no choice.
“They… they tried to use you against me in another way. They were going to kill you. They restrained me, painfully, and they meant to make me watch you die. And that’s when I broke. After that… I don’t know what happened when we were both gone.”
“But you survived me. And you’re still willing to be alone with me.”
“Yes, because that wasn’t you. I know you, Abby. I’d like to think I have some idea how you love. And when the time comes, I know you will be different.”
“How can you let me kiss you when I-”
“Not. You.” He’s drifted closer somehow, and he puts a hand on her shoulder. “I can see the difference.”
“But you won’t…”
“Not because of that. It might… I do want you. I do trust you. Someday soon, I want to find out.”
“But not now,” she hisses, still feeling like she’s missing something.
“Not now. But only because we’re both tired and have seen too much. Not because of you, Abby.”
She turns to face him and oh, it is easy to fall and let herself be held. This, apparently, is within his limits. He is solid and he is hers, still racing manic energy but less so than the last time they touched, and she still wants so many things, and-
“Will you at least stay with me?” she asks, because even that feels like too much. “If I decide this is where I’m staying until the next disaster, or at least for tonight?”
“Yes.”
“And if I want you next to me on that bed? If I want…”
“Of course.”
There is a gentleness in this man, she thinks as she breaks the embrace and walks over to sit on the edge of the bed and take off her boots. Still a new blossom of a thing, this softness in an unlikely place, but undeniably present. Marcus, standing just out of reach and waiting for her to finish her process before he replicates it, has become everything he is capable of these past few months. And he chooses her, chooses to lie with her in her wreckage, and she cannot find words for any of it.
She shifts her body to the far part of the mattress and watches as she can. He has a jacket to shed as well, made harder by the layered bandages on his wrists. She ought to replace them with something clean, she thinks, but she will worry over that come morning or when he asks for her her help, whichever comes first and not a moment sooner. When those wounds heal, she will see them - she’d like to think she’ll see his details every day for a long time yet - and be reminded of his sacrificial heart. She will...
“You could move closer if you want,” he suggests.
She does. She fits well on his side, resting her head on his shoulder. She could get very used to this part, if he lets her.
“If I kiss your cheek, will you freak out on me again?”
“Depends on what else you do in that moment.”
So, innocent is alright. She feathers a few kisses across his face, because she can, and a heartbeat one on his lips before she retreats. Not pushing, not going anywhere, just a little playful affection.
“Not-me didn’t do that,” she murmurs.
“Not-you didn’t understand boundaries,” he replies. “Thank you, for...”
“Don’t. You know when to stop me, Marcus. That’s part of why I love you.”
He makes some kind of contented noise as she closes her eyes and crashes, and for now they are enough.

RWBY V6 CH4 Review: So That’s How It Is
Already we're entering Chapter 4, and it's been one Hell of a ride so far. Even Volume 3 waited until the halfway mark to start dealing out the emotional blows. This one? It started in Chapter 2 and doesn't show any signs of holding back. At last the answers regarding Ozpin, who he is, and of his conflict with Salem have been answered. Now the question is, how will our heroes react to it? Well... only one way to find out, I supposed.
Overview
The reaction is... bad. Its... its bad. With the revelation that Salem can't be destroyed, Team RWBY is furious, Yang’s outright yelling at a tearful Ozpin for hiding this. Ruby, while clearly unhappy, keeps her composure as she asks Ozpin exactly what his plan is to defeat Salem. Ozpin, clearly broken down from both his secrets being out and having to relieve his most painful memories, finally admits that he has no plan. This is the straw that breaks the camels back for, of all people, Qrow. He outright punches Ozpin in the face. He does it so hard that he sends him flying into a nearby tree. Yeah, way to forget that it's Oscar's body buddy. Qrow starts to lament on how no one wanted him due to his bad luck, and through Ozpin it felt like he finally had a purpose and could do good. Ozpin trying to tell him that he is doing good falls on deaf ears as Qrow says that meeting him was clearly the worst luck of his like. This shocks, and even seems to hurt Ozpin, and all that he can do is say that he may be right.
In that moment, Ozpin switches back to Oscar, left to feel the sting of the hit. He confirms that Ozpin is gone and when Yang furiously tells him to tell the bastard (IDK why people make her saying that a big deal when she cursed last volume to) that they aren't done, Oscar clarifies that Ozpin has locked himself away in the depths of his mind... they're mind... yeah all of this is causing the poor kid to break down and have an existential crisis. The girls are mad that Ozpin left, wondering what to do when finally, Maria rejoins the story by yelling at them to stop. She points out that it'll be dark soon as she helps Oscar to his feet, so it's best that they follow a nearby trail and get a move on. Yang starts to turn her anger on her because how dare an old woman point out that they're spewing negativity and becoming Grimm magnets, but Maria puts her foot down and refuses to freeze to death. She even says that she understands that they're upset, but right now they aren't making it any better.
So everyone gathers whatever supplies that they can as they start to finally move. Ruby, now having the Relic, goes to give Oscar back the cane. Oscar starts to wonder if all he's going to be is another one of Ozpin's many lives. Ruby starts to assure him that no, he is his own person... only for Qrow to tell her to quit lying as they are better than that. I have... a LOOOT of not nice things to say about this moment, but I’ll save it for when we get to the review section. Oscar just starts walking, Ruby clearly uneasy at all of this before also walking. Well that was soul crushing!
Lets give the heroes a break for a bit and talk about the villains. Hazel, Emerald, and Mercury return to Salem's domain, Emerald clearly still in shock from the entire thing. They are greeted by Tyrian, who I guess was just sleeping all of last volume or something. He starts to mock the fact that it appears that Cinder is dead, provoking Emerald to draw her weapons on him. It reminds me a LOT of that moment in Bleach when Gin Ichimaru decided to go to Rukia and offer to help her avoid execution before revealing that he's joking just to watch her break down because he reignited her hopes. Tyrian's just as creepy, as displayed when he is unfazed by the threat, even cutting himself on Emerald's blade just to show how unfazed he truly is. To my shock, Mercury actually steps in and tells Tyrian to back off. Yes, Mercury. I still hate him for Volume 3, but you know what? Mercury you won a point! Good job dude! Tyrian goes on to say that hes also upset, because they have failed their goddess. He starts to laugh manically as the three just walk away, Emerald clearly unnerved. You know what Tyrian Go back to sleep. No one missed you!
A bit later, the trio is standing before a clearly unhappy Salem. At first her demeanor is clam as she asks Hazel how the mission failed before rephrasing the question into asking who it is that's responsible for the failure. Hazel accepts the blame... which may be the noble thing, but it turns out to be the wrong answer. Salem rises, outright throwing the table aside as she points out that they all know who is to blame. She then summons up some of those Grimm tentacle arms that we saw in the opening, which proceed to hold Hazel own and I assume may be suffocating him. Well if I wasn't afraid of Salem before, this chapter fixed that! Thanks a lot CRWBY!
Salem turns to Emerald for an answer and terrified out of her mind, the third admits that it was Cinder who caused the failure. This is what Salem was working for as she tells Emerald to come to understand the failure... and that it is why Cinder must be isolated until she redeems himself. Emerald and Mercury are shocked to hear that Cinder is alive with even Watts questioning how Salem would know that. But he takes it back when Tyrian points out that he's questioning their 'savior', aka the scary Grimm lay whose still potentially suffocating Hazel. Salem tells them of how they shouldn't put their desires above her own,a after all only she can lead them to those desires. Damn, and I thought her God complex in the backstory was bad...
Finally Salem frees Hazel, saying that they have to press on. She starts to make plans to get the Relic of Destruction from Vacuo... until Hazel says that he has more to report. He reveals that the heroes are on their way to Atlas with the Relic... and are being led by Ozpin. Well good thing that none of them know about the current discourse, haha. The fact that Ozpin is already back understandably concerns everyone... when the windows suddenly start to crack. We see Salem resonating dark energy as she coldly, but firmly tells everyone to leave. They all comply, Hazel even pulling away poor Emerald, as she just looks on in shock before the doors close. Salem seems to calm down at first...before letting out an angry shout, the windows shattering to pieces. Sure hope that she has an interior decorator on hand.
Back with the good guys, they're all still clearly upset and tense from everything. At this point, they just want to get the Relic mission over with. The snow is continuing to fall with no sign of stopping however when Ruby hears something. The group stumbles upon what seems to be an abandoned farm called Burkshire Farms. Since the snow isn't going to let up, they decide to take shelter there and get some rest. And the chapter ends with our heroes passing through the gate, the only background sound being that of the cold, blowing winds.
Review
Damn, for a thirteen minute episode, this episode caused a LOOOT of discourse. Not bad discourse mind you, I haven't seen anyone call this a bad episode. And it isn't. This was a very good, well-written episode showcasing our heroes emotions as all that they learned settle in. There re of course a lot of things that need to be talked about, and we're going to get there. But lets go ahead and get the villains out of the way before we dive into the deep stuff.
Now that we have the backstory, this entire moment felt a lot more unnerving than any of the villains previous scenes. First, Tyrian is just as creepy as he was in Volume 4. His blind praising of Salem comes off as even more disturbing now that we know that she HAS presented herself as a God so long ago. He's pretty much a devout cult fanatic willing to do anything for the one that he worships and is so clearly sick and twisted in how he mocks Emerald. Yeah I hate Cinder and I think that Emerald would be better without her in her life, but MAN mocking the poor girl about Cinder's apparent demise like that was just... wrong. Oh God was it wrong.  But still, kudos to Mercury finally showing some decency and standing up for Emerald. Nice to see that he DOES have a soul... to a degree, but hey he's better than Tyrian.
I am also just loving Hazel more and more. He may be on the bad guys side, but he's clearly the most noble of the bunch. He was willing to take the full blame for the failures, even though Cinder 100% deserves to be blamed, and actively seemed to be looking out for Emerald as well. It shows that the villains aren't just the 'mwahaha lets do bad things cause BAD!' kinds of villains. I like those kinds of villains when done right, like The Joker and (if it pans out well in S17) Genkins in the current Red vs Blue storyline. Hell, Felix (who Miles also created) can probably count from that show also. But its also good to see when the bad guys have depth and deeper emotions to them. It makes them all the more compelling as characters. Right now Hazel, who displays many noble traits, and Emerald, a terrified girl stuck in a very bad position, are probably the most compelling and I am greatly looking forward to what the story has in store for them.
And of course there's Salem. Now that we've seen how she fell down the wrong path, it makes her all the more terrifying here. While you feel sympathy for her throughout last chapter's flashback, here? You have no idea what she's going to do, and it's unnerving. Up until last week, Salem was an intimidating but very calm figure. Her demeanor never broke, at worst she raised her voice like... once. Even when Leo told her about the plan's failure,s he looked almost bored at the news as she silently had her Grimm kill him. But now? She goes form still calm to throwing tables, nearly suffocating Hazel,a and using blatant emotional manipulation on Emerald to put all of hr minions in line. I'll give her this, she did look legit sad about having to leave Cinder behind and she is giving her a chance to redeem herself, but still. When she finally snaps, I was in the same state as Emerald: shocked and fearful. With Ozpin now back, chances are Salem is going to double down on her efforts, and the results are not going to be pretty.
Alright, with that out of the way, lets get to the heroes side of things. Now there isn't a lot to say about the ending. That's clearly setting up for next week and is just them entering an abandoned farm. So while I've got worries, especially since that one tunnel looked a LOT like the one Ruby was in during the opening, we're just going to see what happens next week. But with how this volume has been so far, be very afraid. For now though, lets talk about the aftermath of Ozpin's secrets being revealed, and the fallout that came with it.
There has been a LOT of debate about the characters actions these past three chapters. Was it right to use the Relic to find out Ozpin's secrets? I'm gonna say no, especially for what we found out, but as I said before after all this time they had the right to know. But clearly none of them were prepared for it. Now the better thing to have done was seek shelter first, clam down, talk about it, and if Ozpin kept refusing then at worst they could get the Relic when he wasn't in control or something and asked the question. But considering the circumstances, there was no way that they were going to do the sensible thing. So yeah, they just found out Ozpin's dark backstory and find out that Salem can't be defeated.
So here's the first thing that I want to address. While the way that everyone reacts was NOT the way to go about it, the emotions that they feel? Those are 100% justified. Look, I feel horrible for Ozpin and again, they could have handled how they reacted to it a LOT better. But they also just found out that it looks like Salem can't be defeated. Ozpin has no plan. He is leading them on a suicide mission. One where yeah, they can fight back and thwart Salem's plans over and over, but it will in the end mean nothing. Now I do think that Ozpin is ultimately doing the best that he can in his current situation, after all it's better to fight back than just throw your hands up and wait for death to come. But if you were in a war where in the end, the bad guy couldn't be defeated and you had to fight endlessly, knowing that you will die in vain, how would you feel? I think I'd just outright break down if I were put int hat position. Of course they're going to be angry about it. They just got all of this dumped onto them (and yeah it is kind of their own fault for not considering that, but still), we can't expect them to just be okay with it. They're reacting to their immediate emotions an hopefully, now that they have a chance to breathe, they can look at everything and calm down.
Ozpin is also justified in his reaction. Yeah locking himself away and indirectly meaning that Oscar has to feel the brunt of the aggression was shitty, but you can understand hwy. He new that if anyone knew the truth he'd get the blame and everyone would be angry at him. As hurt as he seemed by Qrow's reaction, eh didn't seem shocked about it either. Heck, eh didn't seem to blame any of them for how they reacted, even saying that maybe they were right. He's holding onto so much guilt and as he feared, with the truth out no one trusts him and blame him for it. There a LOT of morality questions about if Ozpin hiding all that he did was right or not. I think at the very least, those working for him need to know and if he' was honest about it, they'd have probably been uncertain and scared, but they may have still sided with him in hopes of one day finding a solution. Ozpin painted himself as a liar and untrustworthy and no matter how understandable it is, it was in the end the wrong thing to do. But again, it's really hard to blame him since that knowledge would likely cause panic and get them all killed sooner. He was screwed no matter what he did.
In the end, my opinion is that both sides are right and wrong. QRWBY are right to be angry and upset with all the revelations, but getting angry and outright punching poor Oscar was going too far. Ozpin's shouldn't have lied and lead people on regardless of the reasons, but he's also a clearly damaged person who has been trying to make things right despite all the hopelessness surrounding his situation. All of the reactions have been very human and emotional. This is probably why it's a good thing that we have a character like Maria in all of this. She is someone who seems wise and is uninvolved in the conflict. She can look at both sides without bias and understand why everyone feels how they feel, but can also bring attention to what their emotions are blinding them to. Seriously, with her helping Oscar, taking none of Yang's shit, and getting them all to actually focus on not dying, Maria has become an instant favorite. I love her!
So now lets talk about the part that I did not like. That is Qrow's jab at Oscar. Now the punch was harsh, put he clearly meant it for Ozpin so I can look at it as him reacting in blind anger. I still want him to apologize to Oscar later, but I can understand and forgive that. What I CANNOT forgive is how he treats Oscar like he is nothing but Ozpin's vessel. Umm... asshole, no eh isn't. Ruby was NOT lying to him when she assured him that he isn't just one of Oz's lives. Oscar is a young kid thrust into a very difficult, scary situation but he chose to do the right thing. He decided to train to defend himself and to help in whatever way that he can. He has a ton of baggage piled up on top of him, and so far he is handling better than many would if in his shoes. He is kind, heroic, and has a good heart. He is NOT just another of Ozpin's lives. He is Oscar Pine. He is his own person. And you have the gull to essentially put this kid down, while he's in the middle of a breakdown over his identity, because of how hurt yourself feel.

It's not wrong toward just Oscar, but even towards Ruby. This girl is handling all of this incredibly well. She never shouts and when Oscar switched back, she was immediately concerned about him and unnerved by her team's reactions. And after all of it, because of how kind of a person she is, she tries to assure this clearly troubled kid that he is not just one of Ozpin's lives. He is his own person. And you berate her for lying. You told Ruby, your own niece, that she is a liar because she tried to comfort someone and assure them that they are more than what they think that they are. Look, I know that Qrow is upset and hurt. I do feel bad for him. But that jab was just... unnecessarily cruel towards both Oscar and Ruby. I am really hoping that Qrow will realize this later and apologize for that because Oscar has done NOTHING wrong. Hell, he's the one who told them about the Relic, so clearly he's on their side. I probably feel worst for Oscar than anyone else and I really hope that the volume cuts him a break soon. But yeah, that just... really made me uncomfortable.
So... what happens now? I think that everyone will either start to calm down or it just lingers before someone finally snaps. Regardless, clearly something is going to happen in this abandoned farm. Going off past episode, abandoned anywhere in this show is bad. Lets just hope that for our heroes sakes, they can work through this.
Final Thoughts
This was the perfect followup. The characters emotions are perfectly displayed, Salem is more horrifying than ever, and I just felt tense and on edge throughout. We all were expecting the fallout to be bad, but boy IDT we were expecting this. It's been one Hell of a ride so far, and we're not even halfway done yet. Lets hope that it doesn't run out of steam before then. As far as this chapter goes though, it was an emotional punch to what is already an emotional situation, and I'm probably going to be recovering from it until next week. Good work CRWBY!

2018 top albums
Okay, so hopefully you read (& enjoyed listening to) my top EPs list, this one is a little longer, and hopefully a little prettier. They’re ranked 10 -> 1, with my honourable mentions up front here. I hope you enjoy at least some of the music I loved this year, and don’t find my writing unbearable. Once again, I’ve included spotify links for each album if and youtube links for my favourite tracks of each album.

alison wonderland - awake/remxies
standouts: good enough & no (umru & kid froopy remix)
This was really tough for me to place, it would have likely made it onto the top 10 list had it not been for how much I loved the remix album that accompanied this album, and including both felt like cheating. Despite her trap banger roots, Alison Wonderland manages to hit that dance/cry sweet spot over and over on this project, from the manic banger Good Enough, with her gorgeous cello backed by an anxiety inducing rising bassline, to the anxious "is it good enough!?" ringing out, to hip-hop influenced High, to the big room trap banger that is Happy Place. It's got all of that and more on the base album, and the collection of remixes that were done afterward by her contemporaries managed to even further diversify the track list, while still keeping enough of the original to be recognizable. Even if you don't like electronic music, listen to No (umru & Kid Froopy Remix) and tell me that xylophone lead isn't catchy as all hell.

ross from friends - family portrait
standout: pale blue dot
A mainstay in the lo-fi house scene, Ross From Friends released his first full length project this year, and it gave everything I had hoped. Lovely, danceable grooves, ace production, and the feeling of being transported, if momentarily, to another plane of existence. If you have even the slightest inclination towards electronic music, check out Pale Blue Dot.

joji - ballads 1
standout: rip
The transition George Miller aka Filthy Frank aka joji has made throughout his young career is pretty spectacular. From absurdist comedy to the angsty, low key R&B on this project is pretty amazing, and while he certainly exhibits a lot of similar traits to the S A D B O Y aesthetic that has taken over mainstream hip-hop the last few years, he does it with enough of his own flavour that it's hard to discount that it is his. RIP and Attention are two of the most overtly sad songs I've heard in a long time, both in lyrical content, as well as production and the slurring and gravely vocal delivery. While tracks like Can't Get Over You throw in some needed dancey beats, while still maintaining that raw emotional delivery and content that defines this project so much.

jizue - room
standout: grass
I can't explain this album, I've spent the last 30 minutes attempting it, and I just can't. It's an instrumental album from Japanese group jizue that blends elements of jazz, math-rock and hardcore into...whatever this project is. I love it, but it's just the right side of complex and listenable to serve as the perfect background music, and still manage to stand on it's own. Check it out, maybe someone can explain it to me.

anderson .paak - oxnard
standout: brother's keeper
It took a while for Anderson .Paak to hit it big, but even back when I first heard his stuff, it was pretty apparent that it was only a matter of time before he hit it. Not only are his producer chops on display in full effect here, from rattling kicks and afro-soul influenced melodic leads, to the heavy jazz influences, all layered with a touch of 90s hip-hop. Dr. Dre helped with production and executive produced, and the influences of that era shine through heavily. Speaking of, .Paak's vocal performance is entirely different from what I had come to expect, and covers a wide array of topics, from the politically charged 6 Summers, to the sensual The Chase, that feels a lot it needs to be halfway an action scene in an 80s movie, to the savage Pusha-T feature Brother's Keeper. While .Paak himself is more a singer than rapper, his voice and flow fits the aesthetic of this project, and the brilliance of the production variety while still maintaining the feel of a cohesive project. From the all star feature list, to the frequent use of beat change-ups midway through tracks, back to front this project demands your attention.

rl grime - nova
standout: ucla
My first listen of this album resulted in me thinking "eh, this is just a bunch of electronic tracks", they weren't bad, but I didn't really feel it until my 3rd or 4th listen. RL Grime's ability as a producer has never been in question, and his live shows the stuff of legends. Throw into that with his yearly, highly anticipated Halloween 7 mixtape, featuring a vocal open by Shaq, he didn't need to come through with a project as diverse as this, and yet here we are. He manages to flow easily from big room trap Feel Free and Pressure, to the more housey Shrine and the emotional Atoms and the manic instrumental Rainer. It was really hard for me to pick just one favourite because of how cohesive this album has ended up feeling for me, like being taken on someone else's emotional roller coaster ride. But I've settled on the trashy, trappy R&B UCLA, where the lyrics manage to come across a little insecure, while the beat makes up for it with astounding bravado, and massive trap drops.

chvrches - love is dead
standout: deliverance
I've written before how vital live music events are to my enjoyment of certain genres & music acts, and if I'm being honest,  this album wouldn't be on here if I hadn't had the chance to see CHVRCHES live this year at the Commodore. It's a good album, don't get me wrong, it's got all polish of their previous two albums, and even more varied song selection with the more typical synth-pop bops with Miracle and Heaven/Hell, there's a huge change up with the moodier God's Plan and the incredibly sad and moving instrumental ii. Even Get Out, one of the lead singles from this project is laced with a lot darker subject matter and musical elements. Seeing Lauren Mayberry dance under neon lights to the intro rift of Graffiti will stick in my mind for years to come, and that feeling is what this kind of music is all about.

soccer mommy - clean
standout: cool
My musical tastes have been diverse for as long as I can remember, but this style of grungy, lo-fi bedroom pop-rock has never really been on my radar before. That being said, Nashville native Soccer Mommy has a lot of what I look for in music, catchy hooks, lyrics brimming with emotion and someone willing to take risks. While it's undeniable that this is far from a production masterpiece, which I don't understand in 2018 honestly, the great song writing and Sophie Allison's distinctive voice and nonchalant delivery gives me that summer feeling no matter what time of the year it is. Cool is one of my most listened to songs of the year by a long shot, with it's upbeat music and sad lyrics, it sounds like what teenage regret felt like. Scorpio Rising on the other hand, covers a lot of the same topics, but it manages to do to it in a very different way, sort of in a Slow Dance On The Inside by Taking Back Sunday kinda feel.

rezz - certain kind of magic
standout: teleportal
Even with my list this year being highly varied, I think this might be the least approachable album on either this or my EP list. Rezz has managed to create a cult of personality around herself in a way very few electronic musicians ever manage through her phenomenal set construction, heavy emphasis on showmanship with lights and video during her live sets, and brilliant production. Add on top of that very few artists are making this style of music anywhere close to this caliber, and you end up with a dominant force of heavy basslines and dark aesthetics. If you have ever had any interest in dubstep, be it the traditional UK variant or the trashy late 2000s-era bedroom-produced bangers, you will likely love this album. It's no surprise that deadmau5 signed her in 2016 given that her style of building up layers and layers of effects and sonic elements, only to cut them all out to isolate a heavy drop or gorgeous orchestral melody is very reminiscent of the house legend himself.

hinds - i dont run
standout: tester
Spanish all girl quartet came out of no where for me, but once I was into their vibe, I didn't look back. They sing in English (mostly), but their accents taint all their lyrics with just a little touch exotic flavour, giving their cacophonous musical style one more element to throw into the mix. They sort of sound like a mix of The Velvet Underground, and the Strokes, with a modern pop twist, and the fact they're women making, or more accurately, fighting the transition from care free 20s, to the reality of their 30s comes through in spades. The variety of their voices, and their writing styles gives this album a distinctly personal touch, but not so much it's impossible to relate to. This album is perfect for sitting in the sun on a lazy afternoon and letting the entire project wash over you, if I had to pick just one track though I'd go with Tester, a track about navigating complex, undefined personal relationships, and coping with it however possible.

let's eat grandma - im all ears
standout: it's not just me
I knew that PC Music wouldn't stay off my list entirely this year, the entire label seem to be steering pop music on the whole, and the production influences from SOPHIE fly in pretty fast on the glitchy-noisey delicious mess that is Hot Pink, the opening track. They follow that up with my favourite track of the year in It's Not Just Me, with the angsty lyrics, the way they seem to just float over the top of the beat that manages to be both groovy (dig the dance moves in the music video) and still challenge the listener with complexity and a touch of cacophony. While these two 17 year old girls from some random town in the UK might only be releasing their second project, and the lyrical content is for sure written by 17 year old girls, they show a capacity for having a vision for a track and getting it across in a truly astonishing way. They manage to blend genres, topics and feelings seemingly effortlessly, and I can't get enough of it!

the midnight - kids
standout: america 2
The nostalgic, synth-pop, retro-wave duo The Midnight came through with an ode to the 80s and 90s, laced with modern sensibilities. Stick these tracks over some 90s action movies, and they won't feel out of place, nor will they as your cruise into the sunset of 2018. With lyrics that are wistful for the past, and aware of the fact it will never come back, they manage to make you want to groove along, while slightly pricking that part of your brain that says "hey, is there where you thought you'd be when you were 12?". The whole project is laced with news clips from the 80s and 90s, talking about how exciting, and how terrifying the future looked. It's easy to forget even in those less connected times, sometimes all you could do was blast the stereo, drive into the night, and hold onto the best parts of your past, and try and be optimistic about the future.

brockhampton - iridescence
standout: tonya
Brockhampton is one of those music groups that is such a cultural phenomenon, it'll inspire kids making music in their bedrooms for a long time. No hip-hop group has made such a massive impact since Wu-Tang, and we all know they ain't nuthin' to fuck with. Both the group and each member manages to display astonishing range as they move from emotional ballads like the brilliant Tonya to bangers like New Orleans, they manage to make you want to dance to the driving basslines and clever lyrics, only to snap change to the slow and deeply emotional tracks like San Marcos. From Kevin Abstract's masterminding, to Dom's undeniably amazing bars, to the dreamy Matt Champion and the angst filled bearface, it's easy to see why this album is so diverse. What's harder to understand is how cohesive they manage to blend it all together, trappy vocal effects on top of acoustic guitar, the gospel influences, it's all mashed together into perfection. Tonya was on heavy rotation this year, with it's haunting vocals, brilliant piano melodies, and the change up it's so hard not to feel the heart that went into this project.

I also love the trope of “older sibling is only family younger sibling has left and exists in a morally grey area so they don’t have to” even though it’s rarely done in a way I like but I love exploring that with an older sister and a younger brother bc I can’t actually think of many such examples of that
