Omg thank you Liv 💕 I just have a lot of feelings about Dean and identity and how little sense of self I think he had in those early seasons you know? I think about Dean being Michael's vessel and I think about how maybe he's so right for it because since he was born he's been living with a man who expected him to bend completely to what the situation called for. To a more obvious and painful extent after Mary's death, but those foundations were there even when they were living the apple pie life, imo? And then from four onwards he was his mother's ghost, he was his father's instrument, he was just pulling all of the hurt in towards himself throughout it all. What he wanted wasn't just unimportant, wanting itself was outright an obstacle to him being able to do what was necessary, so I think that part of him just got stunted, you know? Deliberately smothered in the way that the human brain does smother feelings that aren't safe to feel. And so later in life, in those early seasons, it's like, what does he want? What does he really, actually want? He wants his family to be safe and happy but I mean, what does he want for himself? I think his experience of self-focused Wanting gets entirely channelled into a few safe areas, physical things that a lot of other people also want and so feel acceptable, like good food and sex, but even those it's like he's not quite doing it in the way he's "supposed" to because all the rest of his wanting is leaking out from underneath and he thinks of his mother when he eats pie and he melts under physical touch and it clearly goes deeper even though in those early seasons I don't think he has any idea why. Obviously I also subscribe to reading Dean as bi and so even sexual desire for him is sometimes complicated and "unsafe" for him imo.

And then in comes a character who manages to reach Dean. One of the things I love most about Dean and Cas is the way Dean opens up to Cas and learns about himself through that relationship, actualises himself through it even. Cas is simultaneously someone his brain recognises as being a safe person to feel want around, and someone he wants so much in so many different layered ways. So many things start to change for Dean after he meets Cas. Just meeting someone like that once could have changed his life I think and more than that, they became close. And this wasn't supposed to go full throttle destiel but here we are and There It Is
