Green Policies Will Maximise Photovoltaic Potential and Minimise Future Energy Costs - Technology Org
Study from UNSW Sydney shows how reducing greenhouse gases and aerosols in the atmosphere will make solar panels more efficient and therefore save the global economy money over the next 70 years.
Renewable energy – illustrative photo. Image credit: ESA
The levels of atmospheric aerosols and greenhouse gas emissions will have a significant impact in the future on both the production of photovoltaic energy and associated costs.
That is the conclusion of research by engineers at UNSW who have studied a wide range of climate change models looking ahead 70 years.
In a paper published in the Renewable Energy journal, they conclude that variations in the climate system, depending on whether weak or strong action is taken globally to reduce emissions, will lead to changes in photovoltaic (PV) energy generation.
Their analysis of complex computer simulations, known as Global Climate Models, indicates that the potential efficiency of PV in Australia – as well as North America and most of Asia – would be reduced due to decreased radiation and increasing temperatures. In contrast, the efficiency in Europe would be increased.
Aerosols in the atmosphere have an effect by potentially decreasing the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface of the Earth. A rise in temperatures would add to the impact, since solar panels do not actually work efficiently in high temperatures above around 25 degrees Celsius.
Reduced efficiency of PV in the future would therefore increase costs, because more solar panels would be required to generate the same amount of energy.
The UNSW researchers have calculated that the difference in costs could be as high as US$12.4bn per year when comparing a future scenario where little action is taken on greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, versus a low-emission clean-air “green-growth” roadmap.
Lead author of the paper Alejandra Isaza, a PhD candidate at UNSW working with Associate Professor Merlinde Kay in the School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering, said: “These results aim to contribute to the analysis of future energy storage requirements, help optimise the location of future solar plants, as well as promote the adoption of policies to accelerate the ongoing energy transition and mitigate the climate change impacts.
“All the computer models show that temperature will rise in the future, but the most optimistic scenario which is aligned with good climate policies and the uptake of increased renewable energies is also the one associated with lower future costs.
“In contrast, in the worse-case scenarios we have less favourable PV efficiency, particularly in China, because there are less solar resources due to the increased aerosols in the atmosphere, as well as higher temperatures which also has a negative effect.”
Costs of future energy
The researchers used a Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE) analysis to predict the price of energy produced by a generating PV plant over the course of its lifetime.
Although the researchers acknowledge this is a relatively simple approach that does not account for all the costs and factors that influence investment decisions, they note it is a commonly used tool to evaluate the cost-effectiveness and feasibility of different energy technologies.
A/Prof. Kay said: “What the work shows is that there’s a range of possibilities and it depends on how we move forward in time as to which one could come to pass in terms of the efficiency of PV generation and therefore the associated costs.
“I think the key thing is for policy-makers and developers to look at the economics and the costs under those range of different scenarios.
“And what we see is that if we keep moving forward developing renewable technologies then we reduce those emissions and also then save quite a bit of money. In contrast, if we are pessimistic and expect there to be less stringent controls on pollution, then that actually costs us more economically.
“We can see that increased aerosols in the atmosphere reduce the efficiency of PV generation, so that is where we would like to see pollution control measures have a real impact. Those aerosols can be naturally produced – such as ash from volcanic eruptions or dust storms like the famous one in Sydney in 2009 – and there is not very much we can do about that.
“But they are also generated by coal-fired power plants, so if we can significantly reduce emissions from that kind of source and move to cleaner forms of energy generation then we get a better environment and we save money in terms of future PV.”
The research also investigated the difference between two different types of PV panels to assess whether one type would be more beneficial under various future climate scenarios.
Analysis was conducted on mono-crystalline silicon (mono-Si) and thin-film modules, with the former being more dominant in the market but more affected in a future warmer climate.
The paper highlights that more work needs to be done focusing on improving the performance of PV cells at high temperatures to ensure they are more resilient to climate change.

Guide to Watch TGCF Donghua Season 2
Tumblr media
With the new season of the Tian Guan Ci Fu/Heaven Official's Blessing donghua finally releasing soon, I wanted to make a post explaining the different ways fans can watch and support it! Things have changed since season 1, so my old guide is no longer relevant apart from the infographics on how to subscribe to Bilibili CN (and the YouTube channel)!
And to be upfront: the main sites that are going to be broadcasting the donghua have been very sparse with information. I fully expect that we will have to wait until after the first episode releases to know all the details, so while I am making this guide to help people right now, things might change! Please keep that in mind and stay patient! I will post any important updates in the replies as I can!
Additionally, because of copyright/licensing, different sites are going to work in different regions. I do not know with 100% certainty what is going to work in a particular country. There's gonna be some trial and error!
So the main options we have for season 2 are:
Crunchyroll
Sub price: $9.99 USD per month for basic (local prices may vary)
Regions: Americas, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Oceania.
Pros: Easy to subscribe to if available in your region.
Cons: Unlikely for true simulcast so it'll be a bit delayed.
Link to main site (season 2 listing not up yet)
For app: download via App Store/Google Play Store.
Bilibili. tv (EN site/app)
Sub price: $4.99 USD per month (local prices may vary)
Regions: Southeast Asia only.
Pros: Airs earlier than Crunchyroll. Interface is in English.
Cons: If you want to watch it outside of SEA, you'll need a VPN.
Link to Season 2 on website
For app: download via APK link on website if you are outside of SEA. Otherwise use App Store/Google Play Store.
Bilibili YouTube Channel
Sub price: $4.99/$5.99 USD per month (local prices may vary)
Regions: Many -- EXCEPT Japan, South Korea, the Americas, UK, Australia, New Zealand.
Pros: Easy to subscribe if available in your region.
Cons: If you want to watch it from the regions listed above, you'll need a VPN.
Link to channel
It's the youtube app....
Bilibili. com (CN site/app)
Sub price: $9.99 USD for 3 months
Regions: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Pros: If they're gonna air season 2, then they might be the source broadcast if the EN site isn't. Also probably cheapest for those abroad.
Cons: Chinese interface may be intimidating. Not 100% sure if it'll air as normal.
Link to Season 2 on website
For app: download via App Store/Google Play Store.
(NOTE: If you are in Japan, it will be available on WOWOW. If you are in South Korea, it will be available on Laftel.)
F.A.Q.s
🔹What is the release date/time? Bilibili EN has announced it as 20:00 GMT+8 on October 18th. If it releases on Bilibili CN, it'll probably be the same time. Crunchyroll has stated October 18th, but has not yet announced a time as of the posting this guide. I checked. Japan and South Korea have their own release times, so please consult the relevant broadcasters!
🔹Can I watch it on Netflix/Amazon Prime/etc? These streaming services will likely only have it after the whole season concludes, and with a significant delay. For reference, it took several months after finishing for season 1 to be released on Netflix.
🔹Which platform should I choose? Whichever one you can actually access, and feel most comfortable using!
🔹When should I subscribe? Personally, I'll be waiting until the last day before release, just to make sure I have the most information possible. However, I'm sure the idea of doing that makes many people nervous, so... yeah. Whenever is convenient for you!
🔹Which one will have the donghua the quickest/earliest? Probably Bilibili CN & Bilibili EN. I suspect they'll simulcast with each other. I cannot be 100% certain about anything though, because of limited info! For season 1, YouTube and Funimation (now Crunchyroll) were delayed, and it's hard to say if they'll be better this time or not.
🔹Do I need a VPN for Bilibili EN or their YT channel? If you are outside of SEA, yes.
🔹Do I need a VPN for Bilibili CN? Probably not, unless you are in a country that restricts access to CN sites and apps (like India).
🔹Which VPN should I use? This will be up to you! It's best to research what the different options are, and what will work for your needs!
🔹How will I know I'll be able to watch season 2 from my region? The most surefire way is to subscribe to a platform that has officially announced to be serving your region (e.g. Crunchyroll for the Americas). Unofficially, if you can watch the latest trailer and other promo videos on your chosen platform, then there's a good chance you're okay! The exception to this is the YouTube channel, which has some of the trailers public, but has all of season 1 unavailable if you aren't in the right region.... Additionally, be mindful, because even if you're able to see season 1, season 2 might still be region-locked on certain platforms. (E.g. you can watch all of season 1 via Bilibili EN if you're from the USA no problem. But you can't access season 2 without a VPN to a SEA server.)
🔹What languages are going to be available and will there be English subtitles? While dubs for multiple languages have been confirmed, I'm unsure if any of these will be available on release. It'll likely be offered only in Chinese first. For season 1, there were hardcoded CN & EN subtitles for Bilibili on release. Funimation re-subbed the episodes (EN) for their own release, and Crunchyroll will probably do the same.
🔹I watched it on Funimation last time, can I watch it through them this time? No, they were absorbed (in some capacity idk) by Crunchyroll. So they are not distributing season 2 of TGCF, only Crunchyroll is.
🔹Is season 2 actually available in China and thus on Bilibili CN? Yes and no! As long as you are not in mainland China, it seems you will have access to season 2 through Bilibili CN. All promo materials and trailers seem to be available to us, which is a good sign! (They are not available for mainlanders, but mainland fans are able to watch via HK/Macau versions apparently.)
🔹Hopeful that it will be available, I would like to watch it via Bilibili CN, so how do I sign up and subscribe? To make an account, consult this reddit post. To subscribe, please consult the guide below! It's a little old (made it for season 1) but still works pretty much the same.

I looooooooove the chris x wife! reader fic that you wrote!! It got me kicking my feet and blushing 😊 By any chance, could you write a chris x wife! reader going on their honeymoon?
Awww this is such a cute idea, thank you so much, I’m so happy to hear that you loved the last one! ⋆˙⟡♡  I had to get something out on the man’s birthday as soon as I could and this request was the one I was fixated on finishing the most, so do enjoy reading and McLean’s bday ~💗!
CHRIS MCLEAN X WIFE! READER ON HONEYMOON HEADCANONS
Tumblr media
Most newly wed couples go to just one location for their honeymoon.
Yet it was very poor of you to think that standard would apply to Chris.
You didn’t realise until he informed you that you were gonna go to two countries per continent(apart from Antartica, cuz what the hell): Barbados and Costa Rica for North America, Brazil and Colombia for South America, France and Italy for Europe, Thailand and (The) Philippines for Asia, Morocco and Tunisia for Africa, French Polynesia and Australia for Oceania.
The only reason why Chris cut it to two instead of four was because he suspected you would get sick of travelling, and didn’t want you to be complaining on holiday.
“Chriiis, we don’t need to, you know!” you’re verbal about your humble take on the honeymoon as Chris made his long list based on the notes he wrote from his and your opinions,“This is all so costly! We could really go to two continents instead!”
“Huh?” he looks at you, confusion scratching into the space between his eyebrows,“(Y/N), this is literally nothing. You seriously wanna spend our whole two months of celebrating marriage in one place like working class people?”
Harsh, but it’s fine because it’s Chris.
Before you left, he took you on a massive shopping spree where it had not even been the beginning of him pampering you with all the jewellery, the swimsuits and the candies.
This guy doesn’t need to book reservations: the best hotels, air BNBs, holiday homes, you name the one you want to stay at the country and baam. Availability opens a door and charm hands over the keys.
He also hired a chaperone for each country, but most of the time, only for the arrival and departure; he wanted more alone time with you.
At this rate, you wondered if he needed to pay to enter the countries asides from paying the fuel and landing runway.
That’s right. You were getting there by his jet -he ended up upgrading- to each location.
Since it wasn’t meant to carry fifteen contestants this time, Chris abolished the loser and first class section in the new version of his plane to be furnished completely into his headquarters.
During each jet ride, you and Chris would review helpful phrases and attractions that would enhance the experience.
“So in France, we will have to remember to say “bonsoir” from 6 PM onwards.” you reiterate.
“That’s doable.” Chris comments, leaning back in his chair.
“And they don’t like smiling a lot.” you add, doing it yourself.
His relaxation ended,“Bummer. D’you think they can make an exception for me? My resting face is a smile.”
They did- in every place.
The honeymoon was an epoch for Chris to meet his fans from all over the world. If you had a dollar for every autograph he signed the entire getaway, you would have enough money to have your own jet.
Weirdly enough, Chris lost genuine pleasure to greet his global admirers and increasingly rushed the interactions.
“It’s okay to be more attentive to your fans, Chris.” you insist, with your head on his bare body, laying around somewhere on the warm Tunisian beach.
“Nah.” he differs with his hand scrubbing sand on your back,“I came on holiday with you, not them. I couldn’t leave you by yourself.”
Aw. You love your husband,“You’re right. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
He bought you anything that caught your eye. Clothes, hats, rings, ice cream, souvenirs.
Chris had also bought five cameras. He wasn’t letting a single moment of a scenery or pose go to waste.
Be prepared for the day when he eventually gets them all printed out and stuck in fresh albums and wants to reminisce with you.
He took you to the best restaurants, never settling for one less than five stars (maybe four if you persuaded him enough).
“To another exceptional night of our honeymoon!” he raises his glass of happiness.
You copy, both clinking and declaring cheers.
Going back to your accommodation, Chris would have you carried until the first descent onto the fine duvets.
Let’s just say that, by the time you do get back to Canada, both husband and wife’s necks have never been more wine red.

Some promotional images from Cats at the CPAC Musical Theatre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Production description undercut (x)
Cats is based on T.S.Eliots 1939 poetry Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the songs in the musical consists of Eliot's verse set to music by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
On September 3, 1939, Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced that the country was at war with Germany, a sombre moment for a nation still reeling from the losses of World War I. Despite this, the war still felt remote to those on the home front – that is, until December 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and began advancing through Southeast Asia. Suddenly, the threat of invasion placed Australia directly in the line of fire, as was evidenced by the bombing of Darwin on February 19. Enter Melbourne, where only a quarter of street lamps were lit and even electric trains had reduced lighting. The city's "brown out" period was a response to the danger of air raids, and it had a profound impact on daily life. In this production, amidst this tumultuous time, one unique story stands out – the inhabitants of Melbourne’s Jellicle Cats and the threat of war upon them. This assemblage of cats must decide who will journey to the ‘heavyside layer’ in a process of selection for each nominated cat to be considered to be reborn into a new life. In this newly reimagined production, our "Cats" tell this tale, set against the backdrop of wartime Melbourne in 1942, with a nod to the social changes brought on by the war effort, post-war reconstruction, migration, and the reintegration of returned servicemen into the local economy. The musical features no dialogue, only music, and provides a unique perspective on a pivotal moment in Australian history.

Wonder Common Wasps
The common wasp, Vespula vulgaris is a species of wasp that is native throughout Europe and Asia, and has been introduced in New Zealand, Australia, and South America. These wasps thrive in a variety of environments, from deciduous forests to meadows to urban parks and gardens; the primary requirements are an abundant source of food and at least several months where the temperature is above 2 °C (36 °F) which allows them to forage. Nests can be found in tree hollows, crevices, wall cavities, or any other enclosed space.
Vespula vulgaris has a highly varied diet. As larvae, they are fed pre-chewed caterpillars, flies, spiders, and bees. Adults consume more sugary foods like nectar, fruits, and honey. They find these foods through their extremely sensitive sense of smell; the common wasp is capable of detecting minute particles of food via their antennae, and once a source of food is found the individual will return to the hive to recruit others by drumming their abdomen against the side of the nest.
Like other hymenoptrids, the common wasp is a eusocial species; each nests consists of workers under the direction of a single queen. When a queen first begins her colony, she does most of the work building the nest from chewed wood fibre and laying eggs that produce sterile female workers. As the colony grows, reaching up to 5,000 individuals, the queen begins to produce both female and male workers, each of which performs a specific task for the hive; foraging, caring for the eggs and larvae, feeding the queen, or repairing the nest. These workers are directed by pheromones released by the queen, which is delivered both by air and when workers lick the queen to clean her.
The queen begins laying eggs at the start of summer, in May. Larvae emerge about 5 days later, and spend the next 20-25 days being fed by the queen until they reach full size, at which time they spin a mucus-based cover over their cell and emerge as a mature worker. This cycle continues throughout the summer and early fall, with larger individuals emerging later in the season. A larva's place in the hive also determines its size; the largest larvae, which becomes the queen, is located at the bottom of the nest closest to the entrance. Multiple queens typically hatch in a season, but most leave the nest to start their own colonies. Towards the end of the summer, the queen mates with multiple males and then enters a state of hibernation until the following spring thaw; meanwhile, the workers either starve or are killed by the cold.
Workers and queens are fairly similar in appearance; both sport yellow and black markings across their thorax and abdomen to warn away potential predators. The primary difference is that queens are larger, at 20 mm (0.8 in) long, while workers are only 12–17 mm (0.5–0.7 in). Only female workers have stingers. The species is commonly confused with the European wasp, Vespula germanica, as the two look remarkably similar; the best identifier is that V. vulgaris has only one black mark on its head, while V. germanica has three.
Conservation status: This species has a large, stable population and is considered Least Concern by the IUCN. However, in areas where it has been introduced, it is considered invasive due to predation and competition with native species.
If you like what I do, consider leaving a tip or buying me a ko-fi!

Coty powder compact designed by Leon Bakst, Made by Coty Inc in Paris, France, 1935-1955.
The founder, Francois Coty believed the aesthetics of the packaging to be as important as the product. After his successful artistic partnership with designer Rene Lalique in the early 20th century, Coty approached Leon Bakst to design the Air Spun powder box. Leon Bakst is celebrated for his colourful exotic costumes and decors created for the Ballet Russes, which prompted new fashions in dress and interior decoration. This colourful, exotic aesthetic can be seen in the design of the powder box, where fluffy white powder puffs with black and gold handles float against an orange and gold background. Bakst’s original powder box design was made of Moroccan leather with gold leaf embossing. However, these boxes were expensive to manufacture and Coty paid his customers to return them when empty. They were then sent to Japan where the gold leaf would be scraped off and then reused. Bakst’s design was later modified into a cheaper cardboard version by Coty’s commercial artist Georges Draeger. The design of the packaging created an impression of luxury and prestige, while still being mass produced. These ‘luxury’ items were made even more accessible to middle and working class women by packaging them in small quantities and creating gift sets and co-ordinating product lines. Coty Air Spun powder was very successful, selling in Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia. It was so popular in Asia that the ‘Rachel’ colour was created specifically for Asian skin tones. Coty is an internationally renowned beauty product and fragrance company that was founded in Paris in 1904 by François Coty. The company was acquired by the fragrance division of Unilever in 2005. In 2010 Coty had it’s headquarters in New York City and had become the world’s largest manufacturer of mass-market fragrances, aligning many of its new fragrances with celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker, David and Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Calvin Klein. the Greatest Adventure // Eddie Munson
a/n: I´m just trying to cope and wanted to write out my feelings a bit. This has nothing to do with the show in all honesty, just pure fluff comfort. I still don´t think I´ll be able to make a proper comeback to writing yet, but this is an attempt. let me know what you think :)
word count: 788
warning: weed, fluff, no spoilers for the show. (also, it might be a mess, i wrote this in like ten minutes and just wanted to post it so idk if it makes any sense)

“I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I'll go to it laughing.” ― Herman Melville,
The room was small, and thus the smoke-filled it up rather quickly. Even with the window open, the air inside became stuffy and overridden with the incense of the bitter delight that came from the joint in Eddie's hand. He put it against his lips, inhaling harshly. The feeling burned at his throat, all the way down to his lungs, and he let it sting for another few seconds before casually letting the breath out in a cloud of grey. The release that his body got as he let it all out of his system just added to the bliss of it all.
He passed the blunt to you and watched as you did the exact same as he had just done. He was enamoured with the sight of you in his arms, the smoke passing your lips silkily, like ribbons in the air, wavering off to the clouds that dispersed in front of him.
'Can´t believe this is the last week of school,' you sighed out, passing him back the joint. He took it between his fingers but didn't attach it back to his mouth. Instead, he just watched as the tip slowly burned off.
'Yeah, it's crazy,' he chuckled, in disbelief himself. Seven years it took him to finally get to this moment. All those years had felt like the longest stretch of a marathon, and now, finally, he could see the end mark. The finish line was clear in sight. He just had to survive those last five days, which he could do no problem. There were no more exams, no more real classes, just formalities of attendance and, for once, he felt excited to be there.
'So, what do you have planned once you get up on that stage?' You asked, looking up at him. Eddie's eyes had glazed over, but not in that usual manner that weed would get him. More in the "thoughts were miles away" type of way. He stared out ahead of him at the wall of his room, the spines of countless novels blurring together.
'You know, I'm probably gonna flip Higgins the bird, maybe give dear O'Donnell a big ol' smooch on the cheek.'
'I meant more like, afterwards. What are you gonna do after all this is over?'
He had seen that question coming for years but never had actually cared to give it much thought. All this time, whenever it came up, he had known it didn't matter since he was never any closer to actually reaching that point of his life. While all his friends had been considering colleges to apply to, he knew he would be back at the exact same lunch table after summer was over.
But not this time.
Now, the world was his oyster, finally opening up to him. The possibilities were endless.
The first thing that came to mind was California. LA specifically. Or maybe New York. Somewhere where all the creative people hurdled. Or maybe even Portland, that's where all the freaks went to. He wasn't sure. It seemed like the places where he could get something out of his music. It would be difficult, but maybe if he worked hard enough he could make it. Get into contact with the right people who would get him what he needed to break through the surfaces of stardom.
Or maybe travel. Go on the road with no destination set in mind. Get the cheapest plane ticket on the go and see where he would end up. There was so much more to see outside of boring old Hawkins and he wanted to experience it all. All the way from South America, to Europa, to Australia– right through Asia.
All his life he had spent reading books and stories of heroes going on epic adventures, slaying dragons and finding their princesses. It was goddamn time he got an adventure of his own.
Well, he had found his own princess already. She was sitting right next to him, wrapped up in his embrace, warm to the touch, most likely getting sleepy as you always happened to be after smoking. He smiled to himself, thinking of everything the two of you could do once you finally escaped this town.
The freedom would be overwhelming at first, but you would figure it out. Take it one day at a time, creating a lifetime of memories.
Tomorrow, he decided, he would go out and buy a new photo book, and maybe some extra film for his camera. He wouldn't want to forget a single day from now on.
'Well,' you nudged him in the chest, awaiting an answer.
Eddie hugged you tighter, kissing the top of your head, before mumbling out: 'I have no idea.'
The End

Waterspout
A waterspout is an intense columnar vortex that forms over a body of water. Most waterspouts do not suck water; they are small and weak rotating columns of air above the water. Although they are usually weaker than their counterparts on land, there are also stronger versions caused by mesocyclones.

Waterspouts form mainly in tropical and subtropical areas, but they are also observed in other regions such as Europe, West Asia (Middle East), Australia, New Zealand, the Great Lakes, Antarctica and, in rare cases, the Great Salt Lake. There are also some on the east coast of the United States and the coast of California. Although rare, waterspouts have also been observed in conjunction with snowfalls triggered by the lake effect.

Hi. I wanted to know how you travel to grand prixs. Like how do you book tickets and flights and hotels, financial planning, travel planning etc. Do you save up for them or are you aware of cheaper ticket deals.
under the cut :)
grand prix tickets
Book through the official website as much as possible. I know some people who buy last minute cause prices drop, but this will depend if the grand prix is in-demand.
Try to avoid resale unless you are desperate.
(I bought my Singapore GP tickets the minute it came out with 10 mins to spare before I boarded my plane out of LA 😭)
flights
Skyscanner.com is my best friend! I use it to check fluctuations in ticket prices and get notifications about changes, and then I book through the airlines' website. Try to book the same airline as much as you can or with the same alliance (ie Star Alliance - United, Air Canada, Air New Zealand etc.) so you can accumulate mileage points and use them for future travels.
Some credit cards accumulate mileage points as well so check into that.
hotels
booking.com or airbnb.
It's not for everyone but I usually stay in hostels and I always have so much fun. During grand prix week, most of the people at the hostel will be going to the race as well so you will all have a common interest!
financial planning
Go to races closest to you. It will save you so much money. Unless you live in Europe I guess 😭 (but usually they are cheaper)
North America - COTA, Miami, Vegas, Canada, Mexico and Brazil
Asia/Oceania - Australia, Singapore, China and Japan. Also Abu Dhabi, Qatar, Jeddah, Bahrain. Maybe Azerbaijan too.
Figure out what races you wanna go to for the next year and make sure you save up! I was only planning on going to 3 races this year but because of the mental illness here we are, unfortunately.
Set aside money for food and transportation during the trip and budget wisely. (From Nagoya to Suzuka, I think I spent at least $50/day for transportation x 4 days = $200) (Getting to and from Kansai Airport (to and from Nagoya) cost me about nearly $250). If you can bring food to the circuit, try to bring some. Food at the circuit will cost above normal prices.
My general workflow for buying tickets is
grand prix tickets (motivates me to work 😭) -> accommodation (to avoid price surging. if you book through booking.com they give you an option to cancel even up until 3 days before your stay) -> flights as the last one (but don't buy last minute!)

🆃🅷🅴 1987 🅷🅾🅳🅳🅻🅴 🆂🆃 🅼🅰🆂🆂🅰🅲🆁🅴, 🅸🅽 🅼🅴🅻🅱🅾🆄🆁🅽🅴 🅰🆄🆂🆃🆁🅰🅻🅸🅰
This write up is quite long, and explains in detail the formative events in Julian's life, as well as the events that directly contributed to his actions.
Julian Knight was born March 4th 1968 in Melbourne Australia. When he was 10 days old he was adopted by Pamela Anne Knight and Ralph Knight. Ralph was an Army Captain, his role was as an education officer in the Royal Australian Army Educational Corps. He was a qualified teacher who taught literacy, numeracy, and later on Mandarin to soldiers. Before retiring he would reach the rank of Major.
Between 1968 and 1975 the Knight family moved regularly, spending time in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Melbourne. In 1975 the family travelled through South East Asia, before returning to Melbourne to settle down for good.
In January 1976, Julian is encouraged by his father to take part in Cub Scouts, and he does so until 1968 when he graduates from Cub Scouts to Scouts, which he continues until 1979.
In February 1980 Julian begins high school, and in March 1980, his parents separate, and the same month Julian's father gives him a Daisy Air Rifle. Then between May and November he works as a paper boy for the local newsagent, where he saves up enough money to purchase a Chinese Air Rifle.
In 1982 his parents finalise their divorce, and his mother moves the family from Hoppers Crossing in Melbourne's outer western suburbs, to Clifton Hill in the inner northern suburbs.
Beginning in June 1982 Julian begins training with the Norwood High School Army Cadet Unit, and in August he attends his first Army Cadets Camp at the Puckapunyal Military Base in Victoria. It is here that he fires an M16 for the first time.
In November 1972 he is involved in a fight at school and is suspended for the rest of the year (the school year in Australia finishes around December 19th). And in February 1983, he starts at a new high school. In March he appears in court for charges stemming from the schoolyard fight, where all the charges are dropped.
In May 1983, Julian attends the Army Cadets NCO (Non Commissioned Officer- Lance Corporal) course in Goonram, Victoria. Then in August he again attends Army Cadets Camp at the Puckapunyal Military Base. Then a week later he attends Army Cadets Adventure Training Award Course also at Puckapunyal. And in December he attends Army Cadets Senior NCO Camp in Bambara, Victoria where he is promoted to the NCO rank of Corporal.
In January 1984 he purchases a Crossman High Powered Air Rifle. And in April he begins training with the Melbourne High School Army Cadets Unit. In May, he gets a part time job at McDonald's in Melbourne CBD. Then in August he attends his third Army Cadets Camp at Puckapunyal Military Base. The following week, he attends his first Army Reserve Training Weekend, also at Puckapunyal.
In January 1985, he begins his final year of high school. In March he attends his second Army Reserve Training Weekend, this time in Sale, Victoria. In July, he applies for entry into the January 1986 intake of the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. In August he attends his fourth Army Cadets Camp, followed a week later, by his third Army Reserve Training Weekend. On August 13th, he attends examination day for entry to the Australian Defence Force Academy, however he fails due to poor school results and is told to re-apply to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, Canberra, for army officer cadet training.
October 1st 1985, Julian applies for enlistment into the Australian Army Reserve, before sitting his high school leaving exams in November. On November 26th he successfully enrols in the Australian Army Reserve as a Reservist Trainee Soldier. From December he trains as an Army Reservist Trooper.
In January 1986, he obtains his high school leavers certificate, with a C grade in 5 subjects. Then from February 1st to 15th he attends the Army Reserve Recruit Course at Puckapunyal. In March, he is accepted into La Trobe University, as an undergraduate studying a Bachelor of Arts degree, and commences studying French, German History, and Politics. However, he drops out in May.
On March 4th Julian turns 18, which is the legal age you can apply for a firearms licence, and the day after his birthday he applies for a Victorian Shooters Licence. He is gifted a German Ruger 10/22 .22 calibre semi automatic rifle, which is a family heirloom, by his uncle.
In April, he attends the Army Reserve Assault Troopers Course at Puckapunyal, and on the day of his return home he is issued with an A, B, and C Category Victorian Shooters Licence. Then from April 26th to 11th of May, he attends the Army Reserve "A" Vehicle Course, in Sale, Victoria.
On May 15th 1986, Julian purchases a Mossberg 12ga 8 shot pump-action shotgun from a Melbourne gun dealer.
On July 30th he applies for January 1987 intake to the Royal Military College Duntroon, and undergoes a series of aptitude tests and interviews.
Then, on July 31st he purchases a M14 7.62mm (.308) calibre semi automatic military rifle from a Melbourne gun dealer.
1st of September, Julian attends examination day for entry into the Royal Military College. He passes the examinations, and advances to the RMC selection board interview process.
October 2nd, he attends the selection board for the Royal Military College, in Watsonia, Melbourne. He passes and is placed on a short list.
October 3rd to 19th he attends Army Reserve Radio Operators Course, in Sale, Victoria, where he is the course's "Student of Merit". And on October 16th he is informed that he has been accepted into the January 1987 intake of the Royal Military College.
In November 1986, he attends the 4th/19th PWLH Regimental Annual Range Shoot Weekend at Puckapunyal. He attains the highest score in the regiment with the L1A1 Self-loading rifle.
On January 12th 1987, Julian begins his training at the Royal Military College Duntroon. During his time at the RMC, he states that he was the victim of continuous bastardisation and victimisation by senior staff cadets, beginning on his first day.
In April, 1987 Julian began dating a 17yo public servant named Meg. The victimisation of Julian, then escalated, and senior staff cadets would sexually assault Meg in front of him, on multiple occasions while socialising at civilian venues. The same cadets also assaulted another civilian female friend of Julian's named Liz.
By May, the victimisation and bastardisation had reached a zenith, where he would be given orders that were literally impossible to follow. For example, on a day in mid May, he was ordered to prepare tea, coffee, and toast for a group of senior cadets. The was initially ordered to prepare their orders while on the floor, having to crawl underneath chairs and tables, and then after 5 minutes the instructions changed and he was now to prepare their orders without touching the floor, being forced to jump between tables. They senior cadets then began to scream at Knight to hurry up, and when he was almost finished preparing their orders, they would change what they wanted forcing him to start over. When he hadn't finished their orders in 10 minutes, he was given a piece of toast slathered with butter, honey, and peanut butter, and ordered to force the entire piece into his mouth unbroken and to eat it. The senior cadets, then proceeded to throw the pieces of toast with butter and honey or peanut butter, up to the ceiling, in order to leave residue on the ceiling, which they then made Julian clean up. This is just a snapshot of the abuse he experienced while at RMC.
Between 26th and 29th of May, there was a field exercise, FEX. Samichon, where Julian was singled out for harsh criticism for making simple mistakes, that other cadets also made. At the end of the exercise, he received the lowest marks by a substantial amount. This left him feeling defeated. Upon returning to RMC, he had an incident with a senior cadet, and as a result of this, he left the base and drove to Belconnen mall, where he purchased a switchblade knife, with a 4in blade, as he wanted to be able to protect himself.
Over the next 18 hours, he was involved in a series of altercations with senior cadets, one which involved having a bayonet pressed into his chest, another involved a senior cadet pinning him against a wall and threatening to punch him in the face.
He was then informed by one of his senior cadets, that it was highly likely that he would be thrown out of the college, and that a better idea would be to resign before that happened. After receiving this news, he decided to desert his assigned duty that night, and instead attend the 18th birthday celebration of his civilian friend Deanne. He decided against wearing his uniform, instead dressing in casual clothes, and he placed his new switchblade in his pocket.
The celebrations began at the Ainslie Hotel, where they stayed until roughly 10.30pm, at which point they travelled to the Private Bin nightclub, which is the same nightclub that the senior cadets frequented. He had decided to resign on Monday, so he thought that he would just ignore anything that the senior cadets said or did. His group made sure to position themselves on the opposite side of the club from the senior cadets, however Staff Cadet Reed, repeatedly approaches Julian, and attempts to force him to return to base, but Julian refuses. This angers Reed who repeatedly places his hands on Julian, before security makes him back off. After Reed does this multiple times, at approximately 1.30am a scuffle breaks out between a group of 5 people, including Julian, Reed, Lance Corporal Thorp, an unnamed cadet, and a civilian who stood up for Julian.
Julian's group leaves the bar, and members of the group help calm him down. He is bleeding from the nose and eyebrow, after receiving multiple punches to the face. His girlfriend then says that she is returning to the club. Julian goes to the bus station to wash the blood off, and while there, he positions the knife so he can easily access it. He then joins the group back at the club.
After ordering a drink, another cadet approached him ,warning him that there was now a group of 9 senior cadets and a Drill Sergeant who were planning on assaulting him, with the intent of hospitalising him. This group is standing near the entrance to the main bar, staring and making threatening gestures towards Julian and his group.
Julian then formulates a plan to attack Reed and Thorpe first, as soon as they are in a position where he can quickly use the knife on them both. He watches the group, waiting for the perfect moment, and then at approximately 2.15am Thorpe leaves the bar. He then decides to attack Reed alone.
At roughly 2.55am Julian's group say that they are leaving the club, and going to one of the groups house. As they prepare to leave, he grabs the handle of the knife, and extended the blade. As his group began to head to the exit, Julian says he has to use the bathroom, and leave them together. He then makes his way through the club, and decides that it is time to attack. He approaches Reed from his blind spot, and when he is standing next to him, draws the knife from his pocket and thrusts the knife into the right side of Reed's head. The blade hit bone, and he withdrew it, and stabbed him again, behind the right ear, as Reed was collapsing to the floor.
As everyone looked at Reed in shock, Julian ran to the door, and on to the street.
He realised that he had accidentally cut his finger, so he wrapped it in his handkerchief, and made the decision to try and find a police car and hand himself in.
After running a few blocks he saw 2 members of the Australian Federal Police in a marked police car. He flagged them down and told them what he had done. He was transported to the Royal Canberra Hospital, to have the wound to his finger examined. While there he called the base and without identifying himself stated that "Lance Corporal Reed had been stabbed and Cadet Knight has been arrested". He was then informed that his wound required micro surgery, and that he would have Eto stay in hospital for 2 days. The police questioned him for roughly 90 minutes, before informing him that they were placing him under arrest for Malicious wounding with a knife.
3rd of June the RMC Board of Studies convenes and decides that Staff Cadet Julian Knight should be asked to "Show Cause" as to why his appointment as Staff Cadet should not be terminated, effectively ending his career as an Army officer.
12th of June, Julian appears before the ACT Magistrates Court on charges of malicious wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and assault in relation to the stabbing on May 31st. He is bailed on a $5,000 self-surety to appear again on November 10th 1987. He then returns to Victoria.
On June 19th, Julian resigns from his appointment as a staff cadet at the Royal Military College, and from the Australian Regular Army, in a letter to the Chief of the General Staff. And on July 13th he completes his discharge procedure at Watsonia Army Base.
Back in Victoria, he moved back in with his mother, however she had converted his childhood bedroom into a second living room, so Julian was forced to sleep on the couch in the front room. He was unable to find a decent paying job, so he accepted a menial position as a casual storeman at a clothing firm. However the wages weren't enough to pay back the $6,000 army loan he took to purchase a car, and he also had roughly $1,200 in other debts. He was also feeling isolated, as his Melbourne girlfriend had moved on, and his Canberra girlfriend was in Canberra. So he began drinking copious amounts of alcohol, approximately 5 times as much as he was drinking in Canberra. He also received the information that his biological mother was living in South Africa, and had not responded to a letter that had been sent to her asking if she was willing to have contact with Julian.
On Sunday August 9th 1987, Julian awoke at roughly 11.30am. It was 16 days since his discharge from the army. At 1.30pm he attended a birthday party for his mother, at his grandmother's house. He left the gathering at 4.10pm, and while he was there he consumed 2 cans of beer. He drove his younger sister home, before paying a quick visit to his former girlfriend.
Upon leaving her house, his cars gearbox jammed, leaving the car stuck in 2nd gear. He made his way home, where he parked the car, and changed his outfit. He also drank a third beer, before angrily walking the short distance to his regular hangout, The Royal Hotel, arriving at around 5.30pm. None of his friends were there, so he drank alone for the next 3 hours and 20 minutes. At this stage his severely depressed mood, coupled with extreme intoxication, manifested in a psychotic vision of a soldier being ambushed, which when combined with his intense anger, extreme stress, and agitation caused him to experience what he later described to detectives as a "call to arms".
Five minutes later he was sprinting back to his mother's house.
When he arrived, he spoke briefly with his sister when he encountered her in the hallway. Once she had returned to the back of the house to continue watching TV with their mother, he ventured upstairs to retrieve his weapons that were stored under his mother's bed. He took the Ruger rifle, the M14, and the Mossberg shotgun, taking the Ruger and the Mossberg downstairs to the front room. He then collected the M14, and a steel ammunition case, and a leather shotgun cartridge belt from his mother's cupboard, taking them downstairs to the front room also.
He loaded the weapons, and filled his pockets with roughly 100 rounds of ammunition, including a "suicide" 7.62mm round which he placed in the front right pocket of his jeans. He placed a black combat knife down the back of his jeans, then slung the M14 across his back, and picked up the Mossberg and the Ruger in his right and left hands respectively.
At roughly 9.30pm, he ran out the front door, travelling west down Ramsden St and crossing the nearby train line, Julian reached the eastern side of the four lane major arterial road Hoddle St.
He reached the perfect ambush position, and began indiscriminately firing his weapons into cars travelling down Hoddle St. In a 15 minute period he fired 114 rounds from 3 weapons, killing 7 innocent civilians, and wounded a further 19, including 2 police officers.
After a 30 minute police chase to stop and find the shooter, 19 year old Julian Knight was arrested less than a kilometre away in Fitzroy North. His initial plan of committing suicide failed when he was unable to locate his "suicide" round, while surrounded by police, so instead he dropped his weapons, and handed himself in.
In the months following the shooting, Julian underwent a barrage of testing by a variety of professionals. He was then charged with 7 counts of murder, and 47 counts of attempted murder on June 6th 1988.
In early October 1988, following negotiations with the Department of Public Prosecutions, it was decided that he would plead guilty to all charges, in a plea deal. Julian believes that this deal was made with input from the Australian Army, as the main condition of the deal was that the abuse, victimisation, and bastardisation that he experienced at Duntroon would not be mentioned in court, and in exchange the Crown agreed that they would not oppose the setting of a minimum term to the life sentences he was guaranteed to receive.
On November 10th 1988, Julian appeared in the Supreme Court of Victoria for his sentencing hearing. Justice George Hampel sentenced him to Life Imprisonment for each of the counts of Murder, and 10 Years Imprisonment on each of the counts of Attempted Murder. The total sentence he received was Life Imprisonment with a minimum non parole term of 27 years (in Australia, Life Sentences aren't cumulative, and lesser sentences aren't cumulative on top of a Life Sentence, so people don't end up with crazy two or three hundred year sentences like in America. Also, nearly all people who receive Life Sentences will also receive a minimum non parole term, meaning that they have the opportunity to be released in usually 20-30 years, if they don't fuck up massively). Julian was eligible for parole in 2014, however his application has been denied at each parole hearing he has had.
Julian has his own website, where he talks about everything in depth, including his struggles in prison, which are too nuanced for me to get into. I highly suggest checking it out.

Study suggests La Niña winters could keep on coming Forecasters are predicting a “three-peat La Niña” this year. This will be the third winter in a row that the Pacific Ocean has been in a La Niña cycle, something that’s happened only twice before in records going back to 1950. New research led by the University of Washington offers a possible explanation. The study, recently published in Geophysical Research Letters, suggests that climate change is, in the short term, favoring La Niñas. “The Pacific Ocean naturally cycles between El Niño and La Niña conditions, but our work suggests that climate change could currently be weighing the dice toward La Niña,” said lead author Robert Jnglin Wills, a UW research scientist in atmospheric sciences. “At some point, we expect anthropogenic, or human-caused, influences to reverse these trends and give El Niño the upper hand.” Scientists hope to predict the direction of these longer-term El Niño-like or La Niña-like climate trends in order to protect human life and property. “This is an important question over the next century for regions that are strongly influenced by El Niño, which includes western North America, South America, East and Southeast Asia and Australia,” Wills said. El Niño and La Niña events have wide-ranging impacts, affecting patterns of rainfall, flooding and drought around the Pacific Rim. A La Niña winter tends to be cooler and wetter in the Pacific Northwest and hotter and drier in the U.S. Southwest. Other worldwide effects include drier conditions in East Africa, and rainier weather in Australia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. Knowing what to expect in the future helps communities prepare for potential weather in the coming season and in years to come. Global warming is widely expected to favor El Niños. The reason is that the cold, deep water rising to the sea surface off South America will meet warmer air. Anyone who’s sweated knows that evaporation has a cooling effect, so the chillier ocean off South America, which has less evaporation, will warm faster than the warmer ocean off Asia. This decreases the temperature difference across the tropical Pacific and lightens the surface winds blowing toward Indonesia, the same as occurs during El Niño. Past climate records confirm that the climate was more El Niño-like during warmer periods. But while Earth’s atmosphere has warmed in recent decades, the new study shows a surprising trend in the tropical ocean. The authors looked at temperatures at the surface of the ocean recorded by ship-based measurements and ocean buoys from 1979 to 2000. The Pacific Ocean off South America has actually cooled slightly, along with ocean regions farther south. Meanwhile, the western Pacific Ocean and nearby eastern Indian Ocean have warmed more than elsewhere. Neither phenomenon can be explained by the natural cycles simulated by climate models. This suggests that some process missing in current models could be responsible. The upshot of these changes on either side of the tropical Pacific is that the temperature difference between the eastern and western Pacific has grown, surface winds blowing toward Indonesia have strengthened, and people are experiencing conditions typical of La Niña winters. The study focuses on temperature patterns at the ocean’s surface. Thirty years of data is too short to study the frequency of El Niño and La Niña events. “The climate models are still getting reasonable answers for the average warming, but there’s something about the regional variation, the spatial pattern of warming in the tropical oceans, that is off,” Wills said. The researchers aren’t sure why this pattern is happening. Their current work is exploring tropical climate processes and possible links to the ocean around Antarctica. Once they know what’s responsible, they may be able to predict when it will eventually switch to favor El Niños. “If it turns out to be natural long-term cycles, maybe we can expect it to switch in the next five to 10 years, but if it is a long-term trend due to some processes that are not well represented in the climate models, then it would be longer. Some mechanisms have a switch that would happen over the next few decades, but others could be a century or longer,” Wills said. The study was conducted before this year’s potential triple La Niña was announced. But Wills is cautious about declaring victory. “These year-to-year changes are very unpredictable and it’s important not to get too hung up on any individual year — it doesn’t add a lot of statistical weight,” Wills said. “But I think it’s something that we should watch for in the next few years.” Co-authors on the study are Kyle Armour and David Battisti at the UW; Yue Dong, a postdoctoral researcher at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory who did the work as part of her UW doctoral research; and Cristian Proistosescu at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. This regional pattern is opposite to what’s expected long term with global warming. A new study suggests that in the short term, climate change could be favoring La Niñas, though it is still expected to favor El Niños in the long term.
