Legend has a verbal shutdown
1072 words, no warnings other than the shutdown thing

reblogs > likes!
Legend… couldn’t talk.
No, that wasn’t entirely true. He could talk. No physical limitations within his tongue or vocal chords were preventing him from producing sound.
But at the same time, something was stopping him.
He suspected that it had something to do with the fact that he had been traveling with the chain of heroes for so long without any time to adjust, and the stress had finally caught up to him. He walked alongside, listened to, and talked with eight other people day after day without rest. He had stubbornly ignored the overstimulation and masked his burnout, but his mind had decided that enough was enough.
Now he was sitting near the campfire and silently picking at his stew, simply letting the conversation flow around him.
Warriors nudged him and said something, hoping to get a rise out of him.
Legend expected a response to the captain’s teasing words to come easily, and opened his mouth in preparation to say something like “What’s it to you, pretty boy?” Instead, his throat tightened and he snapped his mouth shut, staring at his bowl to avoid curious eyes.
“Whoa, no answer? Really? Is something wrong?” Wind prompted.
Legend looked up and met Wind’s inquisitive gaze. He couldn’t bring himself to answer the sailor, instead giving him a weak smile before returning to his meal.
“Just leave him be,” Wild said from where he was dishing out seconds. “Don’t push him if he doesn’t want to talk.”
Warriors grunted in disappointment, but followed Wild’s advice.
Four soon launched into an animated retelling of one of his boss fights, and Legend settled comfortably into just listening to his brother’s voice. Legend’s own voice was still uncooperative, leaving him unable to speak up with his own thoughts. He found that he could still laugh, quiet huffs with the occasional soft vocalization. But even laughing felt too… awkward, somehow. Despite his mind’s protests, Legend continued to laugh whenever it was appropiate, just to prove that he could make any noise.
After he finished his dinner, Legend found himself fiddling excessively with his rings and bracelet. Having something to do with his hands was soothing, and distracted him from his mysterious loss of voice.
Four finished his story, and Sky directed all attention to himself by pulling out his harp. He plucked out a familiar melody, and the music calmed Legend’s racing thoughts.
Hyrule plopped down beside Legend and rambled about random little things, seemingly uncaring that his predecesor didn’t have it in him to talk back. Legend tried to convey his thoughts with his body language, but he didn’t think it went well. Being in a one-sided conversation with Hyrule was tiring, too. Legend just wanted to be alone, but it wasn’t like he could ask for it because he couldn’t talk.
Wild, thank the goddesses, asked Hyrule to help him at the opposite side of camp, and Legend was finally alone with his thoughts. He set out a pen and paper and began to write a letter to Ravio, just to try and sort everything out.
“I don’t know why, but I really don’t want to talk right now. Its gotten to the point where I can’t, not with the others around. I’m afraid to make any noise, I can’t even hum while Sky plays his harp. Something is making me paranoid and I hate this feeling. I just want to be able to talk again but at the same time it’s the last thing I want.”
He was interrupted by a large, fluffy wolf invading his personal space. Legend let out an airy chuckle and said “Hey, Wolfie,” reaching out to pet him. It took a few seconds for Legend’s actions to process. With a flash of terror, he frantically looked around to anyone had heard him speak.
None of the others had even glanced in his direction.
Still, he blushed and ducked his head down, burying his fingers in Wolfie’s pelt. Okay, so I can talk to animals? But not when there’s people around.
He tried to ignore the screams of badbadbadbadbadbad running through his mind and wrote down his new findings. It wasn’t like Ravio would even read the letter for at least a few days, but Legend found it helpful to sort out his scattered thoughts by putting them on paper.
“You doing okay, Legend?”
When had Time snuck up on him?
Legend found a small piece of scrap paper and scribbled out “Can’t talk.”
“Sore throat? Do you need a drink?” Time asked, and Legend shook his head.
“Don’t want to… CAN’T.” Legend snapped his fingers to make his annoyance heard, not trusting himself with so much as a groan. He slammed his pen down and scowled at his lap, silently fuming.
“Are you having a verbal shutdown?” Time asked, patient as ever.
Legend looked up, hoping that his bewilderment was written on his face since he couldn’t convey it with so much as a simple “Huh?”
“Nobody here would judge you if you are, you know that. We only want to help.”
The possibility of this being a verbal shutdown had occurred to Legend, but he hadn’t let himself really consider it. Nearly two decades of life and ten years of overwhelming, traumatizing adventures, and this was the first thing to psychologically render him speechless? Being around a small group of people for a few weeks? It seemed unlikely, but Legend supposed that he couldn’t write it off at this point. He shrugged and nodded.
“Can any of us try to help?”
Legend thought for a moment, then pointed at Sky.
“Do you want Sky to talk to you?”
Legend shook his head and wrote something on the scrap paper, then showed it to Time. “He can’t stop.”
“I’ll be sure to let him know,” Time chuckled.
Legend breathed a sigh of relief. He was barely paying attention to the music anymore, but the calming noise was the only thing keeping him grounded.
“I’ll leave you alone for now. Just focus on breathing, don’t push yourself to speak until you’re ready, and have Wolfie fetch somebody if you need help,” Time said.
Legend patted Wolfie’s head and flipped a thumbs-up. His surprise verbal shutdown was weird and freaky and he hated every bit of it, but he knew that it had to pass before long. Until then, he had his brothers to help him through it.

SPOILERS FOR THE NEWEST WOE.BEGONE DON'T READ THIS IF YOU'RE NOT CAUGHT UP OKAY
Okay.
I'm very normal about the fact that Texas Michael has a cowboy Ty with him? The concept of the two of them actually being able to reach some sort of legitimate friendship without the horrifying power imbalances of Ty's role with the Flinchites looming directly over them? How did cowboy Ty even get out? Is it the same Ty that freed Michael in the first place? Did he runaway to come and find him? Did he iterate himself to do it or just up and leave the Flinchites? Is he a different rogue Ty that Michael just like, found?
I hope they watch cowboy movies together and that Michael is teaching him to play an instrument and that Ty whoops everybody's ass at poker.
