lord summerisle is the “mighty god of the sun”, willow macgregor is “the goddess of love in human form”, ms rose is the “bountiful goddess of our orchards”… the island creaks with gods like an apple tree with its boughs full, but every single one is, in some sense, flesh and blood

#and that’s what howie can’t process— his god is invisible and fierce which is obviously just as valuable but that’s where the conflict lies #lord summerisle very much sees the flesh as the seat of divinity— ‘every part and tag of me is a miracle’ as whitman would say— but howie #vehemently seperates the two. for him it is the absence of flesh on flesh (or at the very least ignoring it) that allows for contact with #the divine. he resists willow he resists summerisle’s monologues he resists the touch of anointment… #while summerisle the god-figure is essentially touching the whole island with a sweep of his arms every time he opens his mouth or smiles #agrhrgahgrh it’s one film from the seventies it is Not This Deep. at all !!!!! #the wicker man
