Juliette, the Girlboss Trope, and Structural Change
From what I’ve observed, stories with “girlboss” protagonists tend to be less likely to critique existing power structures and end up focusing more on slightly tweaking surface level aspects of them to allow the protagonist to prove themselves within the context of the existing system. To me, this is extremely interesting within the context of These Violent Delights because Juliette is arguably initially set up to fulfill this archetype. Because she is a girl, her claim to the status of heir is questioned by those around her more than it would be otherwise. She feels more pressure to be ruthless and to do whatever she can to earn the respect of those around her. Toward the very beginning of These Violent Delights, she threatens to kill Tyler when he attempts to upstage her, saying that she will kill him before she lets him take her heirdom away from her. Without knowing that These Violent Delights is a Romeo and Juliet retelling, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to expect Juliette to become the leader of the Scarlet Gang and somehow fix things from the inside at the end. She is well set up to be the Strong Female Protagonist ™ who takes what is owed to her and is hardened and kickass and ruthless and doesn’t let interfering men get in her way.
But importantly, regardless of how much Juliette initially knows it, this is a facade. The image of the hardened ruthless heir may be one that Juliette encourages, but it is a heavily distorted reflection of who she truly is. Because at her very core, though she was raised to be the heir of the Scarlet Gang and therefore should be the literal personification of the continuation of the blood feud, that is not who Juliette is. Throughout the duology, her main motivation is protecting those she loves. At first, she believes that she can do this by working within the existing system. She tries to legitimize herself as heir within the existing power structure of the Scarlet Gang. However, the Scarlet Gang Juliette is set to inherit is one built upon a foundation of fractures that legitimizes its existence through the perpetuation of the blood feud to the extent that to solve the blood feud, or even seek to calm it, would be a violation of its very nature. The Scarlet Gang could never accept a leader that sought to do this, nor could the White Flowers, who equally rely on the blood feud as a source of power, accept the figurehead of their rival gang as an ally. To do so would be a fundamental betrayal of the nature of these two groups. Thus, Juliette must choose between legitimizing her position as heir, bringing more suffering upon the people and city she loves in the process, and giving up her position as heir and forfeiting her power.
But if Juliette forfeits her power, who does she forfeit her power to? After all, if she merely walks away, the blood feud will still exist. The refusal of one person to fall in line cannot topple an entire system. The answer comes back to Tyler who, unlike Juliette, truly is meant to represent the continuation of the blood feud. He feels the need for vengeance and hatred at his core, and is constantly suspicious of Juliette, recognizing her lack of loyalty though it is incomprehensible to him. Ultimately, there was never room enough for both of them. When Juliette threatened his life in These Violent Delights, she did so out of fear of him usurping her place. Little did she know, he already had. In representing the longevity of the blood feud, Tyler, not Juliette represents the longevity of the Scarlet Gang. While she was the heir in name, he embodied the very lifeforce of the gang. In a way, he almost represents the Juliette that could have been. And that is precisely why Juliette had to kill him.
Though Tyler’s death is foreshadowed by Juliette’s initial threat in the first book, when she shoots him in Our Violent Ends, it is not the callous, unfeeling kill of an heir pushing aside the final obstacle before claiming their rightful place at the top. Instead, it is Juliette’s final severance from the vicious cycle of the blood feud and the illusion of her status as heir. She recognizes that the power she would wield as the future leader, or even the true heir, of the Scarlet Gang stakes its legitimacy in the continuation of the blood feud, and therefore, she would lose legitimacy as a leader if she were to act against the blood feud. This is further demonstrated when Lord Cai tells her that she can choose between dying a White Flower and being heir following his discovery of her relationship with Roma, representing her direct defiance of the blood feud, and her murder of Tyler, representing her sabotage of the longevity of the blood feud and her rejection of her status as heir.
By this point, Juliette has established that she cannot live as a part of the blood feud. She put a bullet through its heart, firing on her own kin to do so. Because the blood feud has no future, she can no longer pretend to occupy the role of heir. But at the same time, in killing Tyler, she has rejected her place within the blood feud. She cannot die a Scarlet, and she cannot die a White Flower because she refuses to be either. In the end, it is not her and Roma’s apparent deaths that aid the end of the blood feud. Instead, it is their rejection of its perpetuation through their rejection of their statuses as heirs. Their continued survival after their apparent death and the birth of their daughter stands in direct defiance to the division brought on by the blood feud. Though, as is further explored in Foul Lady Fortune, this division is still very present, Roma and Juliette’s continued survival both acknowledges that the kind of change required cannot be brought about by the efforts of one titular protagonist, no matter how world ending their sacrifice, and gives hope for a better future. Unlike the girlboss protagonist, Juliette rejects the status quo and achieves her goals by rejecting power. Instead of seeking to be the figurehead of change, which would also be extremely ahistorical, she does her part and steps back, acknowledging that as a singular person, she does not and should not have the power to fix everything. In the end, she watches from the outskirts of Shanghai, and though she is doomed to forfeit her place within her home to protect the people she loves, she is safe enough to live with her husband and raise her daughter and use her remaining connections to do what she can. Because in the end, one person cannot fix everything, no matter how powerful they are. And the spark of hope represented by Juliette and Roma’s continued survival and the birth of their daughter as well as the protection offered by their weapons ring is enough.

realistically i don't think any mikaelson should have been a parent and i especially don't think a child raised by them would be like. a good person or well adjusted but i do think they should have raised hope to be a little terror. i don't care. none of those people are good people and i need them to own it and i need them to raise a little bastard. they would NOT have raised a selfless little do gooder who sacrifices herself for the world. those are the most selfish people in existence. that's why they couldn't be in her life she would NOT be the person she was in legacies

I think Jeremy as the father of Bonnie’s children is the best option for canon in Legacies they made him guest star with barely any mentions of Bonnie.
Jeremy was the worst boyfriend Bonnie had. She was practically his parent with how often she had to look after his wellbeing. Bonnie shouldn't have to mother the father of her children. Jeremy didn't even do anything to make up for the emotional abuse of cheating-season5. That's why Bonnie still carries the weight of his infidelity around even when they get back together. Tbh, a big reason why I’m anti-Beremy outside of cheating is that it is mainly about Elena not necessarily Bonnie and Jeremy. A lot their moments are Elena-centered discussions. Bonnie deserves far better and so does the Bennett line.
JP mentioning how Bonnie’s permanent death was supposed to be for s5 on Twitter. How she said Kat “begged” for her job mixed with the discrediting and ignoring the Bennett’s in TO/LGCs. Bonnie was never going to get anything after 2017. She couldn’t wait to be free of Bonnie. She hoped Kat would give up and quit the way Trevino did.
LGCS writers bluntly said Bonnie wasn’t an important character for their musical but we all know what that double entendre meant. Bonnie’s not important at all once Elena/Caroline got their happy endings and families. We don’t even have the luxury of seeing Bonnie at peace in the finale scene or reconnecting with her family after all those years. The only time we see multiple Bennett’s at once is when they’re saving the day.
Bonnie barely gets mentioned at all. Bonnie not ending up with Jeremy is truly a miracle considering how much JP hated Bonnie stans and Bonnie herself. There’s ZERO respect to Bonnie given how much Bennett blood the Salvatore Boarding School has and the ascendant in order to send children into prison worlds. Plecverse didn’t even respect the POC characters they had on LGCs. Bonnie wouldn’t have been the exception.
Thank you for the ask! 💜💜💜

katherine IS the most interesting bitch on that show. elena’s only interesting trait is looking like katherine. i would pay real fake money for katherine v cersei beef because they’re both off their hinges
she is the character of all time and no one will speak on it so i will: dead love interest who haunts the narrative who PLOT TWIST is slowly revealed to be some kind of manipulative mastermind pitting the brothers against each other for her own amusement but no one can quite figure out what she was doing that one night in 1864 who PLOT TWIST is not actually dead the tomb is empty and then she comes back to town exclusively to start shit and then PLOT TWIST turns out her entire character motivation is that she has spent her entire mortal and immortal five hundred year existence being hunted to the ends of the earth because of something completely out of her control (she refused to lie down and die to give her magic blood to an older eviler vampire for a ritual) and now he will stop at nothing to kill her over it because he’s a petty grudgeholder.
all she has ever wanted all that’s motivating her is that she does NOT WANT TO DIE. but 500 years of fight or flight running for her life have completely eliminated her ability to make normal human connections so all she knows how to do is play mind games with people she can’t fully trust to have SOMETHING to exert control over. that is such an INTERESTING character arc but she’s also a mean lady on a YA show so she has to be ontologically evil while Klaus gets a redemption spinoff. they hate to see a bitch serve cunt in central Virginia

“human you chose stefan. if you were still human you’d still choose stefan. turning into a vampire changed you and so you chose me” oh stfu it’s like they forgot SHE ONLY PICKED STEFAN BC SHE THOUGHT SHE MET HIM FIRST. damon compelled away their first meeting and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS CONFESSIONS. if she were still human she still would’ve chosen damon EVENTUALLY. bc she def felt like she owed stefan for saving her life that’s why she stayed w him so long imo. stuck through all the bad and all that emotional immaturity bc he saved her life and she didn’t know how to repay that bc she’s that nice of a person. stefan is still just like what a 17 yr old. if she were human she would’ve aged up and caught up w damon’s age and by then they def would’ve gotten together bc stefan is forever emotionally A TEENAGER. aka also why him and caroline work so well together. also bc they were friends first but that’s another story.

I believe the only way season 7&8 of the vampire diaries could’ve been great is if Bonnie was the main character and would’ve went deeper with the witch lore of the show. That could’ve really covered two seasons.
And because I LOVE Bamon, I honestly think if they developed a romantic relationship with Bonnie and Damon, that would’ve elevated the romance in the show. And it would’ve been very compelling considering their history and their history with Elena.
The side plots could’ve included Caroline and Stefan’s relationship and if they wanted to still keep that weird ass plot line with Alaric and his twins, then I think that could’ve still been an at least entertaining side plot.
And if the heretics would be involved, then maybe they could connect that back to main witch plot line, but honestly I would rather for the entire heretic plot line to be thrown away so it wouldn’t be too damn crowded.
OR, wait a minute, I would’ve made the choice to not kill Kai in season 6, and let him escape for a while. Then in season 7, he becomes the villian again.
And Bonnie realized she’s not a match for Kai because he’s a vampire AND a witch. So there could be a plot line for Bonnie to discover a new form of magic so she could be stronger. To this could be a great gateway to introduce more witch lore and show more of her character arc.
And as for Damon, the best way to continue his character is to make him focus on him figuring out who he is without Elena. Because I feel like Damon had always been confused on who he is once he met Elena. This is where he really stops making impulsive decisions and actually works on being a better person for HIMSELF and not for others. And he starts being more open and we find out more about his hobbies, his family history, secret talents, yk!
Like UGH! Should I just write the fic?

I think both Tyler and Marcel get hate because people love the main characters of the shows that they’re in. In Tyler’s case, Klaus was a main villain and had that little stint with Caroline, so it really didn’t matter what evil shit Klaus did to deserve Tyler’s hate, he was gonna be hated regardless. Even in TO, because The Mikaelsons™️ were the main characters, Tyler trying to kill that werewolf girl is vilified even though she deserved it. Same with Marcel, even though he wasn’t always right, he was right most of the time and justified in his feelings towards Klaus and the family, but because he was against the Mikaelsons™️, people hated him. There’s also the fact that he’s black and Tyler also doesn’t look white, but the fandom isn’t going to acknowledge the racism at play, ESPECIALLY when it comes to Marcel, considering he was literally a slave and Klaus constantly used that against him, but the fandom ain’t ready for that conversation (they literally tried to gaslight someone who brought up the subtle racism in the way Klaus talks to Marcel, let me link it).
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheVampireDiaries/comments/1643ll4/klaus_was_lowkey_racist_for_saying_this/
But I think Marcel is a little less hated in TO compared to Tyler in TVD/TO due to the fact that he had better writing and an actual storyline going for him. Tyler was only there when convenient and I think Plec didn’t know what to do with him.
Reddit is hell. You aren’t wrong either. One TVDU fans will always deny racism ingrained in the plot bc godforbid their favorite show has some negative connotations. I want to add in Elijah and Hayley are just as guilty (if not all the Mikaelson’s) of having some racist/and or derogatory dialogue to Marcel.
Second point Tyler from season 1-4 alone had the development people think Damon/Klaus had. However, whenever you give Tyler any sort of praise for NOT taking that abuse from Richard/Klaus copying that behavior. People will mention how Tyler tried to kill Hayley and unborn Hope to lessen his development. As if Hayley and Klaus didn’t deserve that shit.
It’s irritating as hell Tyler was the introduction to werewolves. Most of that was off screen but we do see how adamant Tyler is about freeing these hybrids from their sirebonds and slavery to Klaus. Just for them to die and for Hayley to get a full push as this werewolf queen who cares about everyone. While never acknowledging her past.
Michael Trevino will forever have one of the best werewolf transitions I ever seen. Nobody compares 🤷🏽‍♀️.
