High Desert by James Spooner (creator of Afropunk)

High Desert by James Spooner (the director of the documentary AfroPunk).

This graphic novel really hit home because Teen!Me shared a lot in common with Teen!James. Except he was in High School in the early 90s and I was in High School in the mid-late 90s/early 2000s.

Sadly, not much changed. But odd thing is, the scene in the above comic, happened to me as well. There was this Deathrock looking chick at school that was livid because another girl started wearing layered torn fishnets just like she did. The Deathrock chick said within earshot, "I hope she knows that wearing white foundation makes her look green!". You see, the girl that copied her was a brown skinned Latina. Just like James I didn't say a word out of fear but Adult!Me would've given that Deathrock girl a verbal beatdown.

Just like James, I was ostracized by Black folks despite growing up in a predominantly Black and POC neighborhood. Being nerdy and into Punk I was seen as "Satanic", "white washed", or just a plain ole loser. I was bullied horrendously by my own folks for being "weird". On top of this it was the "Satanic Panic" and when Columbine happened things got so much worse.

I'd like to say Alternative subcultures like Punk and Goth were accepting and a safe haven but that wouldn't be the truth. I liked the music but the Punk scene put me off due to the violence and misogyny. Then, when I started going out to Goth events, the Goths I met were super pretentious and MEAN maybe even cruel. I'd like to say that my race wasn't a factor but it was. Some folks saw me as being a "poseur" because in their minds Black Girls don't like Goth/Punk/Alternative stuff so I must be faking it.

If it hadn't been for my small group of friends, I would've felt completely alone. I found acceptance and a safe haven in the nerd community.

This graphic novel was so cathartic and I read through it in one sitting. I highly recommend High Desert to any POC Alternative kid that feels like they're the only one.

That one time dig admonished me for dressing too masc for my award ceremony really fucking stuck with me. I don't think about it super often but I did recently reach an epiphany about it.

Dig doesn't want to stick out or draw attention to himself but I literally can't help that shit regardless if I wanted the attention or not. I'm extra and weird af, and him saying I shouldn't dress that way for his lawyer shit made me feel as though he was embarrassed to be seen with me. I still feel that way. But I refuse to be made to feel ashamed of my own expression, something that I've spent decades cultivating and take a great deal of pride in.

So I've taken it upon myself to be the sexiest, most striking weirdo possible. Cuz I'll be damned if I allow a man to tell me I'm too much of a freak to be seen with. And hell yeah I'm a freak but I work to be so attractive that that is a non-issue. I strive to enchant and inspire awe in all forms so that I not only am the most fuckable person in the room but my confidence makes my aesthetic the goal, the standard. I aim to intrigue and intimidate in a way that's hard to articulate. I want to be an absolute and I wouldn't be here if not for dig's thoughtless selfishness.
