Celebrating Thirty Years of German
In January 1994, I started a German language class in San Francisco at the Goethe Institut, which met three times a week in the evening. I had a very demanding full-time job in a publishing house, and taking night classes after work didn't make life any easier.
That said, by August of that year, I had sold most of my stuff, quit my job, and moved to Austria for an intense German class at the University of Vienna. By January 1995, I had secured a fellowship to work at a German publishing house in Frankfurt. The rest, as they say . . . 😊
I often think about the decision to learn German and how much fucking time and energy it took. If I could go back in time, I would tell my exhausted self doing homework at the kitchen table until midnight, not to worry. The hard work would change my life, opening doors for me I had no idea existed.
So shout out to all of the adult learners out there struggling with something new. It takes courage, patience, and stamina, but it's fucking worth it! And if you ever need a cheerleader, hit me up!

A little about me...
My name is Peter Fong and most of you will not have heard of me before, but sometime over the past 20 years, you may have tried some of my desserts, cakes or croissants.   Prior to enrolling into the PIDP program at VCC, I was the proud owner and pastry chef of Ganache Patisserie in Yaletown.  Opening the shop was my vision to “bring a little bit of Paris to Vancouver” and becoming established as one of Vancouver’s premier pastry and wedding cake shops was a dream come true.  However, with my lease expiring at the end of October 2023 and the total upheaval in our business due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I decided to close the business and pursue a career in teaching.

As part of the curriculum of PIDP 3100, this blog will chronicle my journey through the program as we explore andragogy and what it means to be an adult learner.  On a more personal level, I will look at my experience in returning to academic studies, differentiating my time as a student at UBC over 30 years ago from my time at culinary school and then my career working as a pastry chef and business owner.   And having recently been hired by the Vancouver School Board as a Baker supporting the instructors in secondary school culinary programs, I hope to gain more insight from the beginning of my new career in teaching and education.

Genuine question I've had for a few years....
Can I take ballet lessons as an adult? Is that a real, available service?
I always wanted to learn as a kid but I was poor and had mild transportation issues. Now that I'm an adult, I'm wondering if it's too late or not you feel

Hi!! I love this series so much, and as someone who hasn’t really drawn since they were a kid but wants to start as a hobby, do you have any advice for sort of learning to doodle on paper and get better at it? I want to start but I don’t really know how/where
The most important step in getting better at any skill is Persistence and Consistency. Practice and keep practicing! The best way to do that is to keep it fun! Picking a project helps generate ideas (e.g. drawing Pokémon, or characters from a series you like). There are also a ton of monthly prompt lists out there!
I also highly recommend scheduling in a 'drawing/practice' time in your day. For me, I started with 30-60 min before bed (bonus: its a good 'no screentime' activity), and the habit took root there.
There are a lot of 'technical' things to study but find the fun first. At a certain point you will discover you've hit a wall, and have a specific aspect/goal you want to target (colour theory, anatomy, lighting, comic layout). Then it's time to go looking for resources.
Once you have the habit and some goals, go collect some inspiration! Find people who inspire you and study their work!
Another little 'art skill builder' I recommend is the Shrimp Method! Only if you find technical challenges like this fun though (Example of one of my studies below)

I want to learn Arabic in light of everything but I'm not sure where to start? Do you have have any resources?
this post has many resources for beginners
learn modern standard arabic to an intermediate level to be able to read, write and understand the basic structure and grammar of the language, then learn a dialect to actually be able to communicate with people. i recommend a levantine dialect, jordanian or palestinian are pretty widely understood by most arabic speakers

Me playing Rimworld like a scifi family simulator? never.
anyways, i've been playing far too much Rimworld so have some little doodles of my main couple's four kinda creepy kids lol. I will admit, "Feral" is technically his nickname, but i can't remember what they actually named him and i don't feel like booting up my game just to check.
Sandy and Feral are very close in age. Timothy is pretty close behind them, and Alice only just hit toddler stage recently. I was sooo worried about Timothy when he was tiny. B/c he was born sick, recovered from that only to catch malaria. Recovered from that and immediately caught the plague. he's alright now.
Sandy and Feral will sit on their dad's research desk to watch him work in game, and i think that's just the cutest thing, so i doodled that too.
fun fact! According to Alice's genetics, she's supposed to have purple hair, but she, instead, matches Timothy with his grey/white hair.
there's a lot of other kids running around my colony too, but they belong to others (one being just a clone lol). no joke, i think i have 5-6 adults and about 8 kids running around the place. it's chaos. i love it lol : )

Blog Post – A Quick Thought on Going Back to School with a Comment on Chapter Two: Traditional Learning Theories
Tumblr media
(Photo courtesy of https://reporter.rit.edu/features/study-tips-people-didnt-have-study-high-school by Daniel Vasta)
After our first month in Foundations in Adult Education (PIDP 3100) and my first month as an online student after 25+ years working as a pastry chef, I have a couple of quick thoughts about my experience so far.
First, going back to school is hard. Period. My mindset when I was a full-time student that recently graduated high school is so different to my mindset now, as a married Gen X’er who is starting a new career as a pastry chef instructor while balancing family life with 2 kids in elementary school and trying to “learn how to learn” again!  It’s a challenge to squeeze in time for reading and research after making dinner and getting the kids ready for bed, so I fall back on my old work routine of waking up early in the morning to make time to study. After reading Chapter Two of our textbook, and researching all the different learning theories, I relate to Carl Rogers and Malcolm Knowles’ humanistic theories, especially andragogy and self-directed learning from the learner’s point of view.  This quote on page 31, really speaks to me…”the adult learner becomes more independent and self-directed, is internally motivated, and can use experience as a resource for learning – all suggest the adult’s capacity to grow, develop, and learn- and participate in making decisions about his or her own learning” (Merriam & Bierema, 2014).

Secondly, studying in our modern technological age is so dissimilar to the 1990’s when I was doing my genetics undergrad degree at UBC. For my 4th year genetics research paper, I remember being at the library everyday, going through micro-fiche files to find research papers and journals, and spending a lot of time and money, photocopying the articles I needed.  At that time, pre-loaded photocopy cards were just coming into existence while manually depositing coins and bills into photocopiers was still the norm. I would write everything down on paper and then type my report on a typewriter or go to a friend’s house to use his computer and printer. These days, with a good internet connection and my laptop, going to school is much more convenient.  I can find articles on experiential learning theory with a simple Google search.  And being able to tab through different reference articles on my laptop at the same time, is amazing to me and has definitely saved a lot of trees and highlighter pens.  Online learning is definitely a trend in adult education that is here to stay and will keep growing as our population of adult learners grows.

my violin teacher was like “when we talk about something to watch out for or fix, you immediately make sure to try it out and i can hear a real change from the start of the lesson to the end. thank you, not everyone does that” and i was like. is my experience not universal 😭

The Adults Who Can't Read
Things to think about. illiterate people aren’t the cause of social issues, their victims. Most of them want help. Just help people when they ask for help. Fight the internal desire to make fun of illiteracy. Disenfranchisement, ableism, neurodiversity.
