Just finished my rewatch of jatp. My perfrct track record of not crying during Unsaid Emily remains untouched. I will say though, I was very close to shedding a tear this time. However, I didn’t even cry during Stand Tall! I always cry during Stand Tall!
Anyways, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the headcanons and theories that us tumblr fantoms created and the little easter eggs we discovered while watching and rewatching the series. It makes me really appreciative of the fact that we had a sense of community during a time where a lot of us were alone, scared, and uninspired. Just like Julie, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and hope. I think that a lot of people felt the same after watching the show. Julie and the Phantoms is what inspired me to learn the piano, the ukulele, and it led me to getting a guitar. When I learned how to play the chords for the soundtrack, I was playing those songs nonstop. It really helped me brave through the unsure feelings that came along with the pandemic. It made me forget my fears about the future.
I don’t feel as hopeful about things as I did back then, but JATP will always be a land-marking point in my life. It represents newfound joy, reignited passion, and abundant vivacity. As someone who loves and is extremely passionate about music, this silly little netflix show really hit me in the most sensitive places. And while I remember having a bout of serious depression after finishing the series, (along with intense rage that while I was dealing with my depression at its lowest point, the cast of jatp was living what felt like my dream) the lessons I learned from the show were far more significant. It literally brought music back into my life, no joke.
The friends I made because of JATP will always have a special place in my heart. A lot of them don’t use tumblr anymore, and I don’t use it nearly as much as I used to, but I’m still so grateful to have been introduced to such kind, accepting, and funny people. The stories, theories, headcanons, fanfictions, moodboards, inside jokes, memes, and fanart we created will always be remembered and cherished. I’m still pro-cheesecake, I’m still highly allergic to sleeves, and every time I see an unnecessary or fake zipper, I think of my fellow tumblr fantoms.
I don’t think I’ll ever truly “get over” Julie and the Phantoms. It was the first thing that truly resonated with my spirit as a new adult. I was 19 and had dropped out of college, feeling completely lost and like I had nothing going for me. Going into lockdown because of the pandemic didn’t help with any of that, and I was aimlessly, endlessly scrolling on social media, hoping to find meaning and purpose. And one day, my friend posted a clip on snapchat of what she was watching on netflix. The guy was cute and it looked like him and the girl he was next to had a nice connection so I asked what show it was. That’s how I discovered JATP, almost 2 weeks after its release. I also just have an unhealthy attachment to the show and the characters so I refuse to let this media that speaks to my soul die.
All that being said, we really deserved another season. I think it would cure me entirely, if I’m being honest. Even if it was just a little Christmas special where they decorate a tree and do those mini stories like filler episodes of a cartoon series. Hell, I’d settle for an animated JATP episode. I just think we all deserve it after what we’ve been through not only as a fandom, but as human beings. I will never forgive netflix for it’s terrible job at promoting, because they only failed when it came to this show specifically. They managed to keep every other show, even ones far less deserving of acclaim and attention, afloat during and after the pandemic. The only reason JATP managed to get anywhere was solely the cast, creators, and fans. Paul Becker was on fucking overdrive, churning out BTS videos WEEKLY. Fanfiction writers were bursting at the seams with multi-chapter series and one shots about every possible scenario. We got things trending on twitter during the two most chronically online years. Fanart was being shared like crazy, and we had the instagram fantoms so confused by the memes that they retaliated and claimed they were superior.
Meanwhile, tumblr was in its shadowbanning era, and fantoms were in the TRENCHES trying to get their content to reach beyond mutuals and taglists. We received barely any appreciation, except for when we trended on twitter asking to renew jatp and on tumblr for jatp appreciation week. Let’s not forget when we thought Owen had a secret tumblr and we all started accusing each other of being him. I will never forget when we all rallied to get Madi to 1 million followers because we didn’t want her to become overshadowed by the boys and all the attention they were getting. We all watched their instagram lives and I will always love the tumblr fantoms who made gifs of the cutest moments from those. Everyone saw me shamelessly simp over Charlie with facial hair wearing a santa onesie. We created a whole Carrie redemption arc out of thin air, we created origin stories for Rose and the Petal Pushers, and we forced the creators of JATP to give us the official last names of Reggie, Alex, and Flynn (This adventure SPECIFICALLY!!!) We were ruthless in our efforts to uncover their last names. We used breadcrumbs to make theories and speculations, only to end up begging in every comment section and dm inbox we could to get Reggie Peters, Alex Mercer, and eventually—though much, much later—Flynn Taylor. We gave Willie more crop tops, we basically storyboarded a second season, complete with episode titles and songs! We uncovered the Sunset Curve EP using the grainiest photos in existence, we created a loose timeline surrounding everyone’s birthdays, deaths, and significant events. We orchestrated a fucking CONCERT TOUR for this band. Oh, and let’s not forget when Kenny and the boys went to Hawaii. That Hawaii trip was so eventful for the fantoms, you have no idea how serious I’m being unless you were there for it. That was something unlike anything else for so many reasons. There’s a lot more, but that’s the stuff that came to mind immediately.

BTTMW2 Recap - Day 2:
I'm sorry for all the spelling and grammatical mistakes; I typed this on my tablet so auto-correct keeps "correcting" my words.
JATP ending:
So, in the M&G Kenny made us pinky swear that we won't disclose anything JATP-related we talked about. Nothing has changed, though: The show remains cancelled (no season 2; no movie)
Neither during the M&G nor the panel they talked about a tour.
Kenny is still very angry at Netflix because of it
But he's working on new projects and is very excited about them
During the panel, a fan asked about the ending and Kenny refused to give an official answer. Instead he let Madi, Owen, and Jeremy talk about how they imagined the end:
Madi: No ending
Jeremy: Every Phantom gets the ending that they needed as individuals, not as a band. Maybe one coming back to life while others cross over
Owen (joke answer): Alex and Willie move up and become the main ship. The show gets renamed and focuses on them building a family
Owen (real answer): They move on and meet Julie's mom
JATP in general:
They were asked about with whom (character-wise) they'd like to be friends with: Jeremy with Reggie, Kenny with Willie and Alex.
Favorite quotes/moments:
Madi: Wake up
Owen: When he was breaking character by smiling when they left the HGC and Reggie/Jeremy imitates Caleb
Jeremy: "I think they can't see us." "I wish I couldn't see you."
Sacha: I got the music
(Charlie's answer was just ... 🤣 He wasn't very serios about it)
Same when he was asked about his favorite dynamic in the show: The trio Dante, Fuego, and Alex
Owen is so grateful for the project as it was his first time acting as an adult and Kenny, Jeremy, and Charlie helped him a lot
They want to be friends forever. Their friendship is very important for them.
Even though the Orpheum Tour (All the billboards around the globe with "save JATP") didn't get us what we wanted, it left an impact. According to Kenny, many people in the film industry were impressed. And the cast is so grateful about it.
JATP cast fun facts and my unrelated rambling/experience:
Kenny likes Charlie so much because he reminds him of a character he used to play in a musical that set him free and inspired him to become evolve from an actor to a director
Charlie's tattoo "Raison d'être" that he has on his wrist is written in Kenny's handwriting as he inspired it and there's an entire story behind it why this statement is so important to Kenny ... it included raisin bread
Kenny is so inspiring as a person. When he talks about his passion he's just so encouraging. There was so much energy in the room
Charlie liked the wolf on my shirt which is weird cause it was actually a fox.
Mission accomplished: I spoke German to Owen
I wore my "Ghosted" shirt for the Sunset Curve Trio. Jeremy approved. (Btw, I love how this photo turned out.)
Got the "Stand Tall" pose photo. Was great. But I was to short to reach Owen's hand. 🤣
Can't say it enough: They are just incredibly nice and down-to-earth people. All of them -- not just the JATP cast. They really wanted to make you feel comfortable around them.
The autographs for Charlie, Owen, Jeremy, Madi, and Mitchell took so long caused because they really talked to their fans and wanted to know so many things. (Unfortunately, that's also why some people didn't get autographs because they were running out of time.)
Also big shout-out to all the fans who were there. Just as nice as the cast
DreamIt on the other hand: Well, most of the staff tried to be helpful. But the lack of information in English was just not funny. (French people really living up to their reputation, I'm afraid.)
I'm on the selfie 🤣:
Tumblr media
I will rant about DreamIt in detail later.
So that's most of the stuff I remember from day 2. Maybe I add some other stuff later as I don't remember much from the closing ceremony. But I recorded it. So can check (and even share it if sb is interested)

For the writer asks! H, A, T, Z (it's the closest to a word I could get with the questions I wanted to ask, haha)
Hatz off to you then XD But really, thank you so much!! <3
H: How would you describe your writing style?
Ooof ... starting right off with the difficult questions, huh? I don't know. Character oriented rather than plot driven, but that's more about content than style. The one thing I can definitely say is that listings of threes definitely are a staple of my writing style. Because listing two things is usually not enough and listing four things is often too much. It's the one thing I pick up in my writing again and again but I stand by this stylistic choice so yeah, that's identifiably yeo style.
I am working on my overuse of exclamation points so that's one stylistic thing that will hopefully get better in future ;D
Other than that it really depends on the story. There are some where the writing style is more plain and grounded. Still with a focus of finding the right words to deliver a punch or something. A less is more approach that tries not to overstate things. But it mostly aims at invisibility.
But there's definitely a couple stories in my repertoire where the writing is a lot more lyrical and the words themselves are more in the foreground and I play around a lot more with metaphors and images (while trying not to slip into purple prose) and the 'how it's told' is just as important as the 'what is told.'
I also get influenced easily by other writers. There's a chapter in my Star Trek AU where it's really clear (to me at least) that I was reading a book by Tana French at the same time that I was writing that. So other styles bleed into mine easily.
A: Of the fanfic you’ve written, which is your favorite and why?
Already answered here but I'll give you another one from JatP: Take Me Through the Storm which is an example of the more lyrical style (or actually very lyrical style) I occasionally write in. It's mostly a hurt/comfort fic where Alex comes home from a weekend with his family, a storm of raging emotions, and Willie provides him with the needed calm center.
T: Any fanfic tropes you can’t stand?
Kidfic. I mean, there's some/a lot of kink stuff I'm not really into and avoid but from the generic ones? Definitely kids. Sorry, kids.
Also, before I somehow got caught by a high school fandom, I used to avoid high school aus. Mostly because the fandoms I used to read in centered around adults with lots of baggage and history, which made them interesting to me so losing all that just by making them teenagers was not very appealing to me.
Z: Is there a story you’ve written that doesn’t seem to get much love?
I mean, there's a couple throw away ficlets that are totally fine to stay obscure and neglected but The Last Standing is the one story I wish had more readers but I think my timing was off with that one. It's a story exploring Bobby's transformation into Trevor up to the point where canon stops written very early in the fandom days when people still called Trevor a villain and weren't very interested in Bobby. No ships, just a little character study, trying to understand how he got from B to T, basically. It predates all the more recent prevalent Bobby headcanons so I guess it isn't even interesting for the Bobby fans now ...

another name goes up in lights, you wonder if you’ll make it out alive
Chapter 2: gonna make you wonder why you even try
Part of @julieandthephantomsbb
Rating: T
Relationships: Julie Molina/Luke Patterson, Background Willex, Background Kayla/Reggie
Tags: Past Julie/Nick, Alternate Universe, no ghosts, Well kinda but they aren't real, Everyone Is Alive, TV Show, Hollywood, Cussing, Hollywood sucks, All the guys parents suck, Bobby is okay, hollywood is sexist, Sexism, Song references galore, JATP Big Bang 2022, Carrie isn't a good person, Nick isn't a good person
Chapter 2 Posted: 8/8/2022
Summary:
Phantoms, the new Network TV show, recently got picked up for its second season and filming is already underway. The show follows a special government unit tasked with dealing with the supernatural. The series will return Marci Harrison who portrays the lead detective in charge of a group of junior detectives (Reggie Peters, Alex Mercer, Kayla Caro), forensic scientists (Luke Patterson and Julie Molina), and a rookie detective (Flynn Rider).
Julie Molina is enjoying her time on Phantoms, the supernatural detective show. It had been her saving grace after being blacklisted from basically everywhere following her media feud with former Disney Channel costar Carrie Wilson that tanked her music career before it even started.
But with rumors that the show isn’t going to get a third season, Julie is worried about her career completely ending with no jobs or recording contracts in sight.
Add in the fact that even if they get a third season, Julie’s costar might leave the show and go off to pursue his music career.
And Julie is trying to understand why said costar potentially leaving is making her so upset.
Chapter 2 Summary: More cover videos are uploaded, new contracts are written, and the cast goes to Comic Con
Collection: JATP Big Band 2022
Read on AO3
Keep Reading for an excerpt
Dirty Candies wasn’t the most popular show in Disney history. It was no Wizards or Hannah Montana, but it did okay and had a pretty loyal fan base. It was definitely top three of the most popular shows that were airing on the network at the time. It probably would have lasted all four seasons hadn’t it been for all the drama surrounding the show.
The show starred Julie and Carrie as best friends who make YouTube videos of them singing and dancing (very original). The two's friendship developed both on and off the screen. Nick played their other loveable friend who had a love triangle with the two girls on screen (again, very original).
But after the second season is when everything started to go to hell. Julie fully believed that there wasn’t a more talented one on the show. Julie and Carrie were both very different singers, with Carrie having more of the pop voice and being the much better dancer. Julie was more of the powerful rocker voice and focused more on playing piano as part of her performances.
The internet kind of ruined it all. People started to choose what character they liked better and supported. It was fun at first but then it got to be too much. Fans would actively hate on the other to boost up their favorite and the producers seemed to encourage it. The producers loved how much the growing online feud gained viewership and wanted it to keep going.
Until it got too much.
Sometime between the first and second season, Julie and Nick started to date. They had both just turned seventeen and were both of their first real relationships. This made everything even worse online once they were public. There were people who shipped their characters and thought that this meant that they were going to be endgame in the show. Others who shipped Nick and Carrie’s characters were upset for the same reasons. There were even the real-life shippers that went hand in hand.
Julie thought that they could all handle it and that they were mature enough to deal with it going into the third season. They were eighteen turning nineteen. They were adults who didn’t even need their parents on set with them anymore.
Carrie couldn’t handle it all it seemed. She started to get mean and basically ended their friendship. They were able to play it up for the camera and in interviews, but besides that, they didn’t interact unless Carrie decided to make some rude remark.
Nick said that he was staying impartial in the whole thing and that although he was Julie’s boyfriend, he was still Carrie’s friend.
Yeah, they were such great friends that Julie caught the two of them making out in Nick’s dressing room towards the end of the season. They broke up, the drama was everywhere, and then Nick and Carrie started dating.
Everyone was starting to see through the cracks of their half-ass attempt to cover up everything to the public. People knew they weren’t friends anymore and that Nick had gone from dating Julie to Carrie. Rumors were thrown out about what had happened, and Julie was painted as either the victim or the perpetrator. Neither was a win and she seemed to be all alone on set.
The summer before the supposed fourth season, when Julie didn’t think anything could make this worse, her mother had died from cancer, quickly. Julie and her mother were incredibly close, Rose teaching her everything she knew about music. The two did almost everything together. She was the primary guardian who came to set with her when she was a minor and even continue to visit a lot when Julie became of age.
They recorded all of the songs at the beginning of the season, a music/performance boot camp kind of thing. Tensions had reached their ultimate high at the end of the previous season and no one was meshing already. Julie and Carrie could hardly be in the same room together, let alone act together.
And then there was the most important issue. Julie couldn’t perform music.
Her mother had only just died two months before the first rehearsal and Julie hadn’t touched an instrument since, let alone sing. Production tried to be understanding at first, Rose’s presence having a huge impact on the show beforehand. Everyone had loved her and had been supportive.
But after a month they all grew frustrated with her when no progress was made. All of Carrie’s stuff was recorded and ready, but Julie had nothing. This information got leaked to the public and Julie very quickly turned from the victim to the villain. She got called difficult to work with and people started rumors that she drove Nick into Carrie’s arms with her diva attitude and superiority complex.
With everything already barely being held together months before all of this, Disney called it and ended the show. Since Carrie looked like an angel to the general public (and being a nepotism baby due to her Rockstar Dad) she was given a movie to wrap up the storyline of the show and a brand-new TV show where she was the lone star of it, not having to share the spotlight.
Disney had to fulfill their contract with Julie still, so they gave her a supporting role in one of their original movies, Meddling, a year later. It was the movie where she first met Luke, playing opposite him as the older sister of the main character. But besides that movie, no one wanted to work with Julie for a couple of years.
And to this day people still talked and debated about the feud.

If you have a Hulu account, you can vote for them to consider picking up JATP. They apparently need a minimum of 100 votes to even consider it, but surely this Fandom can do better than that?!
A Hulu account *is* required in order to vote!

Why Hulu Would Be a Great Option for Julie and the Phantoms (in the states)
I had to put that last part in there for a reason. The reason is because shows and movies that are considered “too dark or risqué” for Disney+ in the states tends to go to Hulu since Disney owns them. Love, Victor was originally shopped to Disney+ but ended up on Hulu. When Disney+ thought that the Lizzie McGuire sequel was too mature (it targeted the people who grew up watching it in the early 2000s), Hilary Duff tried to get it picked up by Hulu. For international watchers, Hulu shows are broadcast on Disney+ outside of the US.
Now as to why Julie and the Phantoms would work on Hulu…
1. It would have its own category as Hulu does not have a music based show on its platform as of yet. It would not be competing against other shows or have a question of where it belongs.
2. Hulu is not one to look at popularity and “target audiences” like Netflix. It has various shows that range from extremely popular to steady with a small dedicated fan base. Case in point, The Hardy Boys premiered last December. It was not a big hit and coming from Canada no less. But it did well enough to get renewed for next year.
3. The budget for Julie and the Phantoms would not be a problem for them. Hulu has done many shows in the science fiction, supernatural, and horror genres that require lots of special effects and big budgets. Julie and the Phantoms would not be nearly as costly.
4. As I mentioned earlier, The Hardy Boys did not have a big presence but a decent following to get another season. We already have a widespread and dedicated fanbase.
5. It would not fall under kids programming like it did with Netflix. So it would not be penalized for being “too expensive” to make as a kids show (in my meeting at DreamIt Con with Mads, she mentioned that Netflix told them JATP was the most expensive Netflix Family show they had ever made). It would possibly be marketed as a family show on Hulu (which various shows fall under from Dancing with the Stars to Stargate: Atlantis to My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic).
Now as to how Julie and the Phantoms should be marketed, I think it should be changed to a teen audience instead of more to kids in the sense that the majority of fans are teens and adults. I think it would fall between Sabrina, The Teenage Witch and Buffy the Vampire Slayer in terms of atmosphere. The reason I chose these two shows is because one is a supernatural comedy and the other is a supernatural drama with some funny moments. Julie and the Phantoms leads more towards the former in regards to the tone (more lighthearted with no crude humor or too dark) but has a more serious overarching storyline like in the latter. And of course there is the musical aspect of the show which slides right in. It can be classified as a supernatural musical comedy. Or just a supernatural comedy-drama.
It is a good thing for the show to be aged up in its marketing since Madison is a young adult and JATP is not a kiddie show. It has a lot of deep nuanced parts to it despite seeming very surface level from afar. Also when she does turn 18 if they want to show a little more physical affection between Julie and Luke, no one will have a conniption.
That is all I have for now on this matter. I will add to it if and when I see fit.

mmm maybe don’t encourage smut in a fandom for a kids show whose main characters are mostly minors (julie, carrie, flynn, nick, carlos, and the boys are all minors, and willie is likely to be a minor as well) and whose cast features several minors (madi, jadah, sacha, sonny) though, not to mention a lot of people in the fandom are minors.
Initial response: Haha, oh you have sent this to the wrong blog, my friend.
Grown-up response: Let’s have a chat.
Look, I get it. Kids need to be protected. There are creeps in the world, etc. etc. I am not suggesting that we all go hog wild and start chatting up minors with evil pervy intentions and go buy a van with "free candy" written on the side. I run a JATP fantom olds chat that is specifically only geared toward those 21+ because it's important for adults and kids alike to have safe and happy fandom spaces to engage. Nuance is good. There's a time and place, yadda yadda yadda.
But I will die on the hill that people in fandom can make whatever the hell they want within fandom.
Look. This whole purity police/culture thing that's happening in all fandom is bad. Bad bad bad. Even if it has good intentions (don't you care about the children, Vinnie?! The children!) this shit can go off the rails in .02 seconds.
Where's the line, hmm? Can't write smut because "omg minors might see it!". Then you get people saying what ships are ok and which aren't (already happening, btw), and that you can only write fic or produce art about "approved" subjects, and who the hell makes that list?
I do not believe in hierarchy in fandom. I am a fandom old. The only people who can tell me how to fan are the content creators (to an extent), and they can do that with a cease and desist letter and a whole bunch of lawyers; thankfully we have AO3, so I don't really worry too much about that shit anymore. Fandom has shifted. I subscribe very much to the AO3 method of fandom-ing. Which is...
Tag your shit. You want to write explicit, porny, smutty, filthy fic with minors? Tag it. You want to write ooey gooey coffee shop AUs that are adorable fluffy masterpieces? Tag it. You want to write an end of the world, gritty, bloody, gory apocalypse horror AU? Tag it. Whatever floats your boat, fam. Tag it. You don't have to agree with it.
If people of any age - including minors - want to take a swing at writing sex scenes for JATP, they should go for it. And they should tag it. And those who don't want to read it, shouldn't.
I'm also decidedly not of the opinion that omg sex is bad, btw, which we're ehhhhhhhh skirting a little close to and that makes me uncomfortable. Minors should have a chance to explore their sexuality and learn and grow and mature in a way that is safe for them to do so and fandom can offer that by being an extension of a fantasy and not a real life scenario. It's why tags exist. It's why content warnings exist.
Minors have to be responsible for what they consume on the internet. The internet cannot 100% successfully cater to minors or any other person of various interests and comfort levels, even with the use of tags and content warnings. Personal responsibility and accountability have to coexist with tagging and content warnings.
Fandom does not exist in a vacuum, even for minors. Fandom doesn't go away once people turn 18. People have to self-govern and curate their own experience. People can assist in this by tagging their shit.
And I really, really implore you to consider the effects of your likely positive intentions. You just want minors to be safe and that's cool. As an older member of fandom, I want that, too. But I will still exist and contribute to the fandom that I desire, the same as anyone else should. We, as a fandom, as individuals, should never ever cater to one demographic. We can't. Because then you become exclusionary, and fandom is for all.
And quite frankly? I think a lot of the whole minors debate, especially in JATP, is virtue signaling. It's also really closely intertwined and sometimes twinged with misogynoir/misogyny. The minors on the show are teenagers. There are interracial couples. Not everyone is straight. Teenagers have sex. Teenagers explore their feelings and physicality and that is part of growing up. JATP also tackles a lot of other issues exceptionally well in canon, including grief, home dynamics, and sexuality. And, actually, I don't really agree that JATP is a kid's show. It can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. I don't see anyone saying that it's not ok for the show and fandom to explore ... being a teenage runaway or fighting with your parents because they don't agree with your sexual identity, which occur in canon and are potentially hard for minors to understand and digest. The fandom has run with both of those examples and I don't often see anyone clutching their pearls about it. But I do see fans policing sex. Why is that? The sex is usually happening between interracial couples, too, and I don't think this fact can be ignored, either, when we're discussing it.
I do have to laugh at the irony of receiving this kind of ask since I purposefully do not engage with a majority of the JATP fandom, because, since it's inception, it's been grossly puritanical. I attribute that to a younger audience of mostly girls who haven't yet come to terms with how society wants to control them, and are therefore mimicking this behavior in their own personal lives and online. But I also think it's a huge culture and demographic shift generally, because I've been a part of fandoms of teenage girls and young women before, and it's never been policed like JATP is.
Anywho. It's ok if fandom talking about underage sex makes you uncomfortable. But what is not ok is for you - or any other fan - to tell other people what they can and can't do in fandom.
So I guess...why do you feel the way you do? Why do you think you're justified in making this decision for an entire fandom? What personal experiences have you had or not had that have informed this decision? What have your experiences been like in fandom? Have you considered all of the different ways this could snowball out of control? What are your honest intentions?
I am asking because it's possible for minors to have a safe and enjoyable experience in fandom where they can grow and learn their own likes/dislikes while underage sex fics exist, while adults run and interact and engage in the same fandom. These things can coexist.
And if you don't like it...you don't gotta read it. If you're gonna write it, tag it. That simple.

no bc netflix could have and should have taken advantage of the fact that a majority of jatp’s audience is teens/adults who probably have regular access to money and can pay for things on their own and could have bought sunset curve and julie and the phantoms band merch and CDs and vinyls and baseball hats and beanies and fanny packs and flannels and friendship bracelets and skateboards and whatever fucking merch you can think of that’s vaguely related to jatp and slap the show and netflix’s logos on them and make a shit ton of profit by promoting the in-show band as an actual band (much like nickelodeon probs did with “big time rush” when it was still on the air) and they could have had concerts and/or full-band meet-and-greets and actually seem like they give a fuck about a very popular and successful award-winning original series created by a director that a lot of us grew up watching (whether it be his 80′s movies, hsm, descendants, whatever; i’m pretty sure there are plenty of us who heard “oh, kenny ortega is involved? i trust him to make a good show and he fucking did”)
but noooooooooo netflix shot itself in the foot and the mouth and the ass and every space in between by acting like it wasn’t a worthwhile show to renew (and only announced the cancellation after stringing along the cast, crew, and fans for over a year and then probably called kenny right before he and the cast had to go onstage in paris so he had to be the one to announce it he had to be the one to break the news bc netflix is full of fucking cowards)

i'm becoming more and more convinced that charlie's dms are real. i’m going to give you guys the evidence there is so far, for you all to make your own conclusions. personally, as much as i hate to say it, i think the dms are real.
i want to preface this by saying that i hoped as much as everyone else that the screenshots were fake. i honestly debated even posting about it at this point because everyone seems to have made their peace that they’re fabricated and moved on, and i don’t want to start or rehash anything. i promise you, i hated making this post as much as you guys are probably going to hate reading this. but i feel like we as a fandom deserve to know and address the truth, and choosing to ignore this will only do more harm than good.
there are two tiktoks showing proof of the messages: here and here
it’s pretty clear imo that charlie sent those messages in that group chat. there’s publicly available information proving a lot of what i’m going to talk about, but i’m not going to expose anyone especially since a lot of the people involved are minors. if you want to talk more about it, feel free to dm me but i’m not going to post anything publicly beyond those tiktoks.
so yeah. charlie talked about smut in a group chat with at least one confirmed minor as far as we know. in the screenshot you can see that someone explained what smut was to him, and then he continued on talking about the explicit fic.
i know that a lot of us on here, myself included, love to harp on l*lex shippers, and while the racism involved with the ship should by no means pushed aside that's also not my biggest concern at the moment. a lot of these people are young teenage girls and there’s a clear power imbalance involved. they’re fans, and he’s an adult man who they look up to. yes, they shouldn’t have sent the fic to him in the first place, but charlie’s an adult and should have known better than to encourage this. this is on him. he really can’t see that interacting and talking about sexually explicit material with minors isn’t alright??? is he that scared of his fans turning on him if he doesn’t act like he’s their close personal friend???
he needs to realize that he’s not going to lose his fanbase if he establishes boundaries with them. honestly, there’s more of a chance that he’ll lose them if he doesn’t establish boundaries. other people said this better than me (i’d like to link chloe @willexx’s post here which makes a lot of really important points regarding this as well as discussing madi, and this post by @reggieshairflip which goes really in depth into a lot of great points), but this is really concerning.
i also went on twitter last night to see what people were saying on there, and i’m beyond words. the majority of the commentary seems to be along the lines of “protect charlie from the smut!!”
y’all. charlie isn’t the one who needs protecting. regardless of the legal situation, if he wants to read fanfic he’s gonna find ways to read it. he’s a grown man, he’ll be fine. that’s so far removed from the actual point, i don’t know how else to explain it. charlie will be fine. we don’t have to be worried about him.
maybe people should focus on the fact that he’s talking about smut in a group chat with minors on it? like first off, don't be in a group chat with fans of your show, but especially don't talk about smut with minors, what the fuck. and the fact that he doesn’t even seem to realize the issues with what he’s doing is troubling in and of itself.
charlie has been involved in various other groupchats with fans for a while (this isn’t a new thing by any means), and i will admit that most of those interactions thus far have been innocent and harmless. regardless, the fact that he’s in group chats with fans at all worries me. these people are largely young, teenaged girls who idolize charlie--they’ve practically developed a parasocial relationship with him, and that’s not healthy in the slightest.
he’s not their “bestie,” he’s a celebrity. he keeps up with the innocent and harmless things, and encourages them, but doesn’t establish boundaries--and that’s what leads to people thinking that doing more is okay because he hasn’t said otherwise. people meeting him at the airport at 2am, fans showing up to owen’s house at midnight and then charlie entertaining them. that’s what this kind of behavior leads to, and i fear that it will inevitably lead to much worse in the future. i’m not trying to take blame away from the people who did these things--fans have to respect boundaries, set or not--but as a public figure charlie has a responsibility to set clear lines.
the point of this post is absolutely not to “cancel” him or anything. that wouldn’t be productive at all, and one of my favorite things about the jatp fandom on tumblr is our ability to have actually constructive conversations about things like this. this is tumblr, and i know i’m basically speaking to an echo chamber here-- but i feel this is important enough that it has to be said, even if nobody outside of this site will probably see it.
he needs to be held accountable and made to realize that what he’s doing isn’t okay. i get that this is his first experience being at the center of a large fandom like this, and i understand that he’s probably really excited about all the fans and wants to connect with them as much as possible. but he would do well to take notes from jeremy (and hell, madi, and she’s sixteen and didn’t have any prior acting experience at all), and engage in a healthy, responsible way like they do. i’m not going to speak about owen because i don’t really have much info or knowledge about how he interacts, but this potentially extends to him as well.
this is a really complicated and messy situation, and i get that. feel free to share your thoughts, but please be respectful. sending love to all of you guys rn 💜💜💜
EDIT: TO CLARIFY. i have seen this post making the rounds on twitter. i’m okay with that as long as it’s not a screenshot and the post is directly linked HOWEVER charlie did not straight up send smut to that group chat. they sent him the title, and he looked the fic up and sent the link in the group chat to clarify it was the one they were talking about. he was informed that it was smut, but it wasn’t just him sending the fic unprovoked. everything i said above still applies, he should not have engaged or encouraged the conversation but please don’t spread false information.

i think not | owen joyner
requested?; - yes! Owen Joyner x reader - their characters might not be love interests on the show (readers is possibly a new one for Luke/which causes a rift in Juke) but they are in real life and are trying to keep it on the down low especially during cast interviews and with fans.
word count; 2K
warnings; language, yelling but only like two sentences
a/n; I didn’t know how to end it so the ending kinda sucks sorry. also side note, the character the reader plays on jatp is a character I’m planning on writing an x reggie fic with so be on the lookout for that !
Tumblr media
that close up tho
You didn’t mean for it to happen.
Not the, relationship, of course. You wanted that to happen. You’ve been wanting that to happen since you were an extra dancer on the first season of Julie and the Phantoms and danced right into Owen on accident during The Other Side of Hollywood. He was sweet about it, of course he was, asking if you were okay when he was the one that got barrelled into. The apology coffee date turned into a movie night at his apartment which then turned into weekly Friday night takeout dates which ultimately turned into Owen blurting out one night that he liked you and wanted to be your boyfriend.
You obviously said yes.
Which brings you to now, two years later filming season two of JatP, except this time you weren’t a dancer, but a recurring character - Delilah Alarie, a 17 year old girl who can hear ghosts, but can’t see them, and forms an unlikely relationship with everyone’s favorite bassist in a ghost band. This is where the problem comes in.
When you and Owen started dating back in 2019, you two decided to keep it on the DL because you both weren’t totally sure where it was going to go. At the time you were both so busy: Owen having his first acting job as an adult so he was getting used to the long hours, and you working what felt like 25/8 to get all the dance routines down pat. So you both just...didn’t tell anyone. That’s not to say people weren’t suspicious. Charlie was present at many movie nights and Tori liked to tease you about you how you’d spend your time between takes staring at the blond drummer and his fidgeting fingers.
Filming wrapped and you planned to announce your relationship at the wrap party, but a certain 19 year old thought it would be smart to get a little wasted and passed out before you could say “hey, we’re dating.” Then, you all went your separate ways and you and Owen didn’t see the need to inform everyone of the relationship, especially because you had to figure out the whole long-distance thing.
Then Covid hit. And there really wasn’t a need because you both were fighting so hard to not get insecure and worried about the hundreds of miles between you two. But you got through it. Between many facetime calls, a spontaneous trip to Hawaii, and one memorable meet up at a halfway point between your two states, you were finally back in each other's arms after the last three months apart. Of course, it was on set, where everyone thinks you’re just friends.
So yeah, there’s a problem. Because you didn’t mean for the secret dating to go on for so long. Life just, happened, and now you two are constantly sneaking around your fellow castmates and trading secret kisses in each other’s trailers and having little rendezvous meetings in the apartment building’s pool after your roommates have fallen asleep. You’re sure Savannah and Tori have heard you sneaking out a few times, but they wisely say nothing. Charlie sleeps like the dead so your certain Owen is in the clear.
It’s not like you two want to keep it a secret. Of course you want to tell your friends, it's just, since it’s gone on for so long you’re scared of what could happen. If they’ll get mad about the sneaking around and the lying.
But alas, you knew the day when the secret would slip out would come. And today just happened to be that day.
Your friends were already starting to get suspicious, you and Owen were starting to lose your subtlety with the sneaking around, and some fans don’t understand the term BOUNDARIES and caught you two outside the apartment building one day. You weren’t doing anything relationship-y, you two were just coming back from a short day on set because you both ended at the same time and were looking forward to some much needed alone time. But you both knew better than to hold hands or kiss in public, which you were glad for that rule when a few girls bombarded Owen when you both walked out of the parking garage to head inside. The girls posted about the interaction online and of course, assumptions were made about why you two were together. The cast brought it up, but you both shut it down. You really thought the secret would be exposed because someone would catch you two together...Owen is not good at keeping his hands to himself despite his own PDA rule.
But no, the secret came to a head because Owen is a big fat st0upid head and got jealous over his best friend.
Tumblr media
It started as a normal day. You got up at the last possible minute, Savannah and Tori already eating breakfast in the kitchen, knowing better than to wake you up before your alarm. You ate, showered, changed into comfy clothes for the ride to work. Madi joined you and the other girls that day, now being a little older her dad trusted her to be alone with the older cast members and alone on set for a little while. You jammed out to Doja Cat and HSM because “range, Y/N, range.” Then you arrived on set to Kenny calling you and Madi over for an impromptu meeting before any of you could reach hair and makeup.
“Alright, now that the rest of you guys are here, I have an announcement to make.” You looked around to see that it was just the main four and you, and that’s when trepidation hit. The only scene you knew of today that involved you five was when the boys finally became visible to you, and you and Reggie share a moment. It’s a hug, much like the one Julie and Luke shared in the season one finale. But Kenny had come up to you a few days ago, suggesting adding a little something something. He told you he wasn’t sure yet, had to run it by a few execs, but that Jeremy was okay with it and he wanted to make sure you’d be okay with it too. You had said yes, after all Jeremy was the one married so you were really only worried about how he and Carolynn would feel about the kiss, you didn’t even think about Owen.
That was a mistake.
“So, I ran it by a few execs and of course, our own Delilah and Reggie, and have decided that after their big hug moment, a little kiss would really make the scene and ma -”
“Uh I think not.” It was muttered, but everyone heard it. And everyone froze, Kenny stopping mid sentence to look at the culprit. Owen was looking at his hands, completely oblivious to everyone staring at him. He didn’t even realize he’d said it aloud until Jeremy cut the tension with a little forced chuckle.
“C’mon Owen there’s enough of me to go around.” Everyone chuckled a bit, but Owen froze in his fidgeting, his face going firetruck red and eyes darting over to you.
“Shit. Fuck I said that aloud didn’t I?” He groaned, putting his face in his hands and, before you could stop yourself, you walked up to him.
“Hey. Hey c’mon.” You gently wrapped your hands around his wrists and pulled his hands away from his face. “It’s okay.” You expected him to look stressed. Based on his tone of voice you were preparing for a minor panic attack. But when you saw his face, all you saw was anger. It shocked you, causing you to stumble back a bit.
“You knew about this?” And okay, yeah, you also expected a bit of that. But not to this caliber.
“Owen I -”
“No. No you knew and didn’t tell me? Didn’t think to mention that you’d be kissing one of my best friends? What the hell Y/N?” You flinched, not used to Owen being this angry and loud.
“Owen, buddy, hey. Let’s just -” Charlie started, trying to diffuse the situation having noticed you flinching.
“No! This isn’t a ‘calm down’ thing. This is a “my girlfriend lied to me” thing and I’m very upset about it!” And whoop...there it is.
“Owen...”
“God just, really Y/N?” Then he walks away, leaving you surrounded by your confused friends. It’s silent for a few seconds, everyone taking in what just happened.
“Um...I know this probably a really bad time to bring this up but uh...y’all owe me twenty bucks each,” Charlie said. Then everyone started talking at one. Kenny apologizing for not knowing, Madi berating Charlie for the bad timing, Charlie firing back that Owen is just being dramatic, and Jeremy consoling you with Kenny. His hand on your back jump starts you into action. You quickly excuse yourself to make your way to Owen’s trailer, knowing that’s probably where he stormed off too.
You don’t knock when you get there, just walk in, making sure to lock it behind you. Owen is there on the couch, elbows on his knees and head in his hands.
“Owen Joyner what the hell was that?” That’s not what you had wanted to say. You were going to be nice and ease into it. But he yelled first and now you're anxious and stressed and upset. He sighs heavily and looks up at you, eyes red and glassy with unshed tears.
“I’m sorry. I - Y/N I didn’t mean to freak. I realized halfway here that was not the way to go. I’m so -” You cut him off by pushing him back and crawling into his lap.
“It’s okay. It’s okay I should’ve - I shouldn’t’ve just yelled and I definitely should have told you when Kenny proposed the idea I just got so caught up in the fact it’d be my first on screen kiss and it’d be with a married man who’s in quite possibly the cutest relationship ever and I was worried about -”
“You’re rambling babe,” Owen says with a smile. It’s a soft thing, one that makes your insides all mushy and your heart starts beating a little faster. “It’s okay. I mean, I would’ve liked to have found out earlier and not in front of our friends - oh my God! I just completely exposed us didn’t I? Oh God!” He whimpers out a whine and leans his head forward onto your shoulder. You giggle at the blonde beneath you, running your hands through his hair as he pinches your sides for the laugh.
“Babe, I’m pretty sure they already knew.” Owen whips his head up at that, eyebrows furrowed.
“Charlie mentioned everyone owes him twenty so, i’m pretty sure they were betting on when we’d tell them.” Owen groans and grumbles at that, throwing his head back in a dramatic way to convey his fake frustration. He brings his head back center and smiles softly again at you.
“I will make sure to steal it from him tonight. That’s our money babe.” You giggle into the kiss he places onto your lips. You two sit there for a few more minutes, exchanging kisses and trading affirmations of love. After a final kiss, one that’s full of passion and heat, you decide to head back to set.
You walk into the stage with the studio hand-in-hand, smiles on your faces. Madi squeals when she sees you both, running over to hug you.
“Yay yay! I knew you’d work it out and now I have another couple to fangirl over. Yay!” You hug the small girl back before she bounces over to give Owen the same treatment.
“Congrats bro,” Charlie says with a smile, clapping a hand on Owen’s back and ruffling your hair up. Jeremy smiles at you two, hugging you both as well.
“Congrats you two, now can we get back to the meeting? You two dating is old news. Like, 2019 old. But congrats on finally announcing it!” You look at Kenny in shock for a second, before bursting out into laughter, everyone around you following suit. Owen squeezes your hand three times and you look back over at him. You both shoot each other a small smile.
It’s gonna be okay.

Note
okay I actually have a lot of thoughts about the potential overrepresentation of ace-spectrum jatp fans because it is so de-sexualised compared to a lot of other media so I don't think it's unresonable to image we flock to it for that reason - because even though none of the characters are canon ace, they do 'act' it because its a kids show and its pretty much the closest we can get to rep a lot of the time
Hello Anon!! Yes EXACTLY!
I think a lot of ace fans, especially sex-repulsed aces, are tired of overly sexualized adult media. And while adult media can be interesting and exciting, it feels great to watch a show where sex isn’t even mentioned or held up on some pedestal. Kids shows obviously aren’t going to bring it up so we all go there. It helps that Julie and the Phantoms is an incredibly well made show that’s fun for all ages, not just kids, because most (not all, but most) people who know or suspect they’re ace are teens and up.
I love JATP and I’m glad I have it!! I’m tired of overly sexualized teenagers. Julie and Flynn are some of the most realistic teen girls I’ve ever seen in any show or movie.
Thanks for the ask!💖

Tumblr media
Welcome to the next round in our fest!! The theme?
Back To School!
It’s that time of year. School is back in session (good luck!). Let’s write about it. There’s so many opportunities surrounding school settings. Go wild and crazy under the bleachers, on stage, in the principal’s office.
I D.A.R.E. you. (Get it? Or are you too young for that reference? At least the boys understand it. Drug Abuse Resistance Education. It was terrible and probably not effective.)
High School Ideas:
High School AU (everyone lives, same age)
High School Musical (they are in theater and perform)
Hogwarts (or Ilvermorny) AU
High School Reunion
Boarding School
‘90s Sunset Curve
Luke Drops Out
Nerd/Jock AU
Parent/Teacher
High School Rivalry (did someone say enemies-to-lovers?!)
Battle Of The Bands
Ray, Rose, Victoria (or any other adult) In School
Teachers/Admin POV
They’re All Teachers
These are just common tropes. Write whatever comes to mind, as long as it relates to the school setting.
