They're out of breath when the clock strikes midnight, and his memory doesn't fail him even if she hadn't reminded him -

"Happy birthday." He says with a wild grin, all fangs and teeth and blood. Adrenaline courses through his veins as he gives her a chaste kiss against the mouth before taking her hand and pulling her along.

He's not even sure what they're running from anymore, but the bullets whizzing by are enough of an indicator.

ii.

He says it again with a gift, wrapped perfectly and set on her kitchen table.

The knife gleams in the fluorescent light, beautiful and deadly.

Though he's not much for words, 'It reminded me of you,' says the things he means to say.

iii.

He says it once more, later, pressed against her in the cool sheet, bodies tangled together. It's well past midnight into the next day, but he still repeats it when his mouth is against her neck.

There's no telling how many birthdays either of them are going to get.
