Please do things to strengthen your attention span. It stresses me out so much when people just accept their small attention spans and cater to them without any acknowledgment that they are making it worse by doing that.
There is a reason attention spans are worse now and it didn’t just happen by chance. Media and the internet designed it that way and we went with it because it was easier.
Some of us with ADHD and brain fog need to meet ourselves where we’re at and exercise our attention span by watching a two minute video instead of a one minute video. Some of us need to sit down and read a novel with our phones turned off.
Wherever you’re at, just realize that not doing things that feel hard will keep making your attention span worse.
the most helpful thing i have ever seen from neurodivergent internet spaces is “THERE ARE OTHER TIMES OF DAY TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH”. this has genuinely saved me from executive dysfunction spirals so many times.
By keeping a tray full of no prepare necessary food, in the fridge it can be used to aid neurodivergent or fatigued people.
By putting food like, cheese and crackers, or whatever is a safe food for you personally on the tray, it can be taken easily to the couch or bed to be eaten from whenever you are hungry.
This prevents executive dysfunction or fatigue and any reason preventing you from eating. You need to care of yourself because everyone needs food to stay alive including you.
You deserve to eat even when on a bad brain day and are unable to prepare a meal for yourself.
If not having a full meal doesn't satisfy you, a snack may even give you the energy to make a full meal afterwards!
All of you complain about overstimulation and sensory overload
We need to talk about under stimulation. I’m not saying I want to be overloaded with information. No I mean when I get panic attacks because there is not enough self stimulation in a situation. I have to walk out of meetings to pace around and think to calm myself down because my fight or flight response has activated from being not being able to stim.
I get so anxious when I cannot listen to music or have something playing in the background because I need stimulation that I choose to have and which I have control over
I don't think a lot of people realize that lot of their advice to disabled people often boils down to "Get over it." they are trying to be helpful but their idea of helpful is "Just do the thing" because that's what they do. for them they just do things. It comes naturally to just do it.
They don't know how to bridge the gap between you and the task. For them the bridge is already pre-built and stable. For disabled people the bridge is run down, not well kept, it feels unsteady and is hard to get across without being slow and cautious - hell for some people there is no bridge and we need to build it ourselves but we don't have the bridge building tools and no one gives them to us.
"Just cross the bridge." They say before walking over their pre-built bridge. They never gave you the tools to build a bridge to cross.
adhd is getting a drink before realizing you already had one
adhd is not finishing one or both of them
adhd is leaving the can/cup/container sitting somewhere prone to being knocked over
adhd is leaving the can/cup/container sitting somewhere prone to being knocked over for several weeks or longer
adhd is making note of the can/cup/container every time you see it when you do a Highly Frequent Task, but never actually discarding it
adhd is knocking the can over while doing that Task for the one thousandth time since you sat the can/cup/container where it was prone to be knocked over
adhd is getting angry at yourself, the can, and anything else for being so careless and thoughtless
adhd is stepping away to get paper towels to clean up the mess and getting distracted by your dog
adhd is forgetting about the mess entirely until it dries on the surface
adhd is cleaning the mess up, frustrated and swearing to yourself that you're going to be more mindful
adhd is sitting the the can/cup/container in a different, but still prone to being knocked over location while cleaning up the mess
adhd is also leaving the cleaner and the paper towels all sitting in the same location with the can/cup/container
adhd is finally going to pick up everything to put it away several days later
adhd is getting distracted to make a tumblr post about it
Happy Friday all! I'm off to see some GO fandom friends today and I'm still recovering from seeing Michael Sheen shake his ass in Nye. Anyway, hope you enjoy these hot off the press memes 😄
moving to a city with public transport after driving your entire life & also having bad bad time blindness or whatever is wild because every time i go anywhere Without Fail i think i can move faster on the scheduled, consistently paced trains than gps says i can. and of course i’m wrong about this but maybe we should give it a go one more time
