i used to be so good at writing strong, thoroughly-researched, thoroughly-edited essays.
as a kid in hs, my teacher literally came up to me, holding my 40 page essay on the intersection of the European witch hunts and capitalism/exploitation/gender roles (it was supposed to be 7 pages...whoops) and went like "this is literally a master's-degree level thesis. what are you doing?? you could literally use this as your final dissertation in a master's program, what the fuck."
NOW??? NOW?? you'd think I'd be oh so skilled. but alas. i can barely piece together two ideas. adhd skill-regression is so so real. im SOBBING

Study tipps that work for me as an autistic ADHDer
(who massively struggled with any school related studying for years)
Finding out when I can focus best. I can't think by daylight. I need it to be dark outside to study. Therefore I study at night. If you can study at the time of the day you can focus best, do that. It doesn't matter if everyone else gets up at 5 am to do their ✨perfect productive morning routine✨. There's no one right time to be productive.
Stimming or moving while studying if I feel like it I can't focus (especially when I have to listen to recorded lectures for hours) when I don't move. I need to sit in my rocking chair and rock back and forth to take in any information at all. Pay attention to if you feel like moving when studying. If you're used to suppressing your stims, try to relearn stimming in a safe space if possible. The better regulated you are, the easier it will be to focus.
Nice distractions. Ali Abdaal once mentioned that he always studied with his door open so friends who passed by would come in for a little chat. You need to take breaks anyway, so think about somethings like that to make them more enjoyable. If you study at home or live alone, text your friends before you start studying, so replies will drift in while you're studying. TL;DR: 1. Study when you can focus best, you don't need to be productive in the morning if you're not a morning person. 2. Listen to your body and move if you need to move to focus. 3. Make your breaks nice, I like chatting with friends in between studying. Feel free to add what works for you : )

Okay, so i have an ADHD hack, and usually these don't work for me, but this one did.
So, i saw this on TikTok. If you have multiple chores, and don't know where to start, just write them all down, and then number them.
Then roll a dice, and whatever chore that number is, do it. (And if you don't have a dice, there are thousands of apps for that.)
It makes the chores approachable.
You don't see the mountain of all chores anymore, it's just one thing. Also you don't have to think about the next thing, because you don't know what it is.
And then it's done, and you can move to the next thing the dice tells you
I just did this to clean up my room.
I put bed, couch, nightstand, desk, chair, floor etc. And hell it worked. My room is actually clean now...
Like, try this, i swear, this is amazing!

To my fellow ADHD people who work from home/are freelancers/don't have anything or anyone to enforce some kind of routine or tasks: for the love of God download this app named PROGRESS!
Tumblr media
This thing is my BEST FRIEND. It converts your tasks into percentages! You can add sub-tasks forever if you want to (with different colors and icons!)
Tumblr media
And it helps a lot to keep track on your progress bc you feel a sense of completion when you see how far you've got in your task! There are various other functionalities to it, some are paid, but you can use it forever without paying a cent and it won't bother you!

To do list: ADHD edition
Tumblr media
This is how my to do list will look like if I'm going to visit grandma
I need to make a timeline like this, because of time-blindness
I will break down tasks into smaller ones, because it prevents me from forgeting something (and it helps with motivation)
I estimate how long will my tasks take separetly because it tends to be more presize
normaly these lists are on the first piece of paper I can find and look way messier (i tried to make this one more understandable)

Hi. Do you have any tips on how to be productive and how to stick to a routine? I create routines but can barely stick to them, and it's stressful trying to stay on top of schoolwork and other extracurricular activities. Thanks!
Hello, been away to focus on my health.
I’ll try to keep it simple: so a lot of the times people with ADHD fail to stick to routine or have difficulty forming habits is mostly due to our object impermanence.
So taking account object impermanence when forming a routine means :
1. Creating ADHD friendly space at home.
• some people with ADHD have struggles with teeth cleaning / brushing teeth, so what you can do is place it near your bed
• some people with ADHD have problems with misplacing items, so what you need is not to be more vigilant, BUT YOU NEED VISUAL CUES, and place the items where it is EASY TO SEE AND REACH. If putting it in the middle of hallway is easy for you to take it every morning (even if it is odd place), then that’s the routine that works for you!
• same as eating, if you have problems forgetting to eat, having a few snacks/ready to eat food placed in front of you will reduce the amount of energy/spoon you need to take in order to get food.
• some adjustment I made to make my home ADHD-friendly is to have a lot of label stickers (at door, at switches, at kitchen). I also switched to transparent container so my items can be seen and easily found.
2. Your body already has its own routine, you just need to tune in and listen to it.
• What is automatic for you? Observe your one week and track the pattern. What is the best task you have ever completed and why is it so engaging? This is not going to be straightforward, but it shouldn’t be because everyone is different and unique.
• If you have ever felt guilty for playing games while eating, then that’s also how your ADHD brain trying to keep you engaged and focus doing your routine (eating).
• same as if you need to do your homework while watching a documentary or listening to podcast, sometimes adding more distractions can help people with ADHD concentrate better.
• if your body relies and thrives on novelty, then you have to find ways to keep improvising your daily tasks. Don’t feel bad for not being able to stick to routine, you probably thrive more from sticking to your routine from variety of places or working with different people.
3. Always gamify your task and keep it fun.
• this is how I try to keep daily tasks and routine less daunting.
• it sounds weird but do your routine/daily task with the craziest approach you have right now.
• just like in games, it works better if you have a buddy or enemy you need to squash in order to tackle the tasks!
Most important lesson, for me with ADHD, is ACCEPTING THAT I HAVE AN EVER CHANGING ROUTINE.
It is part of how I move, it is part of how I get things done.

For people with low energy or spoons/can’t stand up long to hand wash dishes/etc but have a dishwasher, let me put you onto these—
Tumblr media
[Photo ID: a bag of Cascade Platinum Plus dishwasher actionpacs. End ID]
If you’re like me and end up with dishes accidentally left bc you can’t deal with em yet (and stuck on food 😅😅😅) these babies have special enzymes that will eat it ALL.
Get a pair of vinyl dish gloves, put all the nasty dishes in unwashed, and pop this dish pac in AND IT WORKS. All the gross food gone.
It’s been such a lifesaver when I’m looking at dish mountain and want to cry 😭

ADHD TIP!!!!!! hw :,)
1. make timelapses on your phone of u doing your work. this helps so much i cant even BEGIN to explain. it feels like im a little youtube with my life together, and i love the idea/aesthetic of people having video diaries so. it also helps me stay on task because ik that id hate to rewatch my videos and see that i was super unproductive, so it’s almost like performance anxiety but in a good way and it’s satisfying to see !! if u want i will post some of them
2. SEPERATE YOUR BROWSERS! i use opera for my fun stuff (it’s basically just google marketed “for gamers” and it kinda slaps ngl) and ive got a rule that when im on chrome, im not allowed to use any of my time-sucking things (pinterest, tumblr, quora).’
3. when writing an essay, change the font and line spacing consistently. helps my brain by adding variety and avoiding the thing where u gotta reread the sentence 8 times only to forget it and read it again only to forget it and rea
4. when you have a writing assignment (can u tell im doing my english final rn) START IT ON PAPER. u gotta sit down with your notebook and the intent to write the draft of the essay on paper. ive found that pretty quickly, my hyperfocus will kick in and my brain will catch the drift of what we’re doing, which ends up prompting me to switch over to my computer.  ive got so many pages in my book rn that are just the first paragraph of a paper that end  abruptly as i get into the flow of things
5. when typing, wear fingerless gloves. it helps man, trust me. it feels like all of my typing and writing energy is stored in my hands and the fingerless gloves kinda contain that energy. does that make sense. do you guys get that. i feel like u get it
6. templates. something i struggle with is not really knowing how or where to start things, which templates have seemed to help with. for example if im writing a biography about someone, ill google biography templates and there will be an outline that works as the perfect guide. this tip is pretty universal and can benefit everyone, but it took me a while to figure out pls. outline = good
7. work in the dark/at night- though im sure a lot of us do this regardless, working in a situation that imitates/is nighttime is genuinely helpful for us. for me, working at night feels like a choice that i made on my own and without instruction from superiors, which is motivating for some reason. people with adhd (i think this might apply to other forms of nuerodiversity but im only certain about adhd) have circadian rhythms that naturally skew later, so working later instead of in the daytime might be the most productive time for u.
also, i get that it’s good to avoid doing work in bed because associating a place of comfort with an activity of strain is probably Not the best, but sometimes, working in my bed is just what works best for me. it’s important to know yourself and trust what you need!!

Drop your best ADHD hot tips!
My #1 hot tip is to get treatment! Get meds and therapy!!! It helps so much!
But if you're not in a position to do that, or you are doing that and want more hot tips, here are some things that have helped me.
Do it to music. Task you don't like? Chore that feels overwhelming? Turn on some jams that make you feel like you need to dance and suddenly it's easier.
Time it. I've noticed that i tend to think stuff is going to take forever when really i just don't know where to start. Set a 5 or 10 minute timer and see what you can get done in that time. If the momentum carries you further than the time you set, great! If not, you can stop, and look - you made progress!
Giant white board. I don't know where I got this white board, but it's huge, and when i have a lot to do i take an inky black marker and make big check boxes next to everything i need to do, even if it's so simple. It's so satisfying to check those off.
Colorful, visual incentives. Right now i have a big jar of peanut butter m&ms by my sink. Every time i wash a dish, i can take one--and every time i Do The Dishes, i can have a handful. When i see the m&ms, I'm motivated to do a dish! I also used to write my school tasks on colorful sticky notes, then when the task was done I'd crumple the note and put it in a transparent vase. When the vase was full, I'd treat myself to something i liked!

Study hacks that actually work for me as an autistic ADHDer
(who massively struggled with anything school related for years)
Not getting too invested in series, movies, books, you name it If I like something, I REALLY like it. If I'm into something I'm REALLY into it. I try not to consume too much new media during exam periods/periods of intense studying so I don't fall down that spiral of distraction and binge watching. If you absolutely do need to watch something to relax or get your brain fueled, maybe try watching a few episodes of a series with no context (so start somewhere in the middle) or rewatch stuff you already know but haven't watched in a while.
The exact opposite of what I just wrote, but only do this outside of exam season/ very intense study periods!!! If you do get really into series/books/whatever kind of stories- use that. Pretend you are your favorite character (preferably a really studious or nerdy one), dress up in their style or something so you get really hyped about it and then sit down and study.
Try to find your way of doing it. Experiment with strategies and find out what makes it stick for your brain. You don't need to do flashcards if they don't work for you. Try mind maps, list, tables, writing quiz questions for yourself, explaining it to someone, listen to your textbooks, whatever. Be creative. But please, please note: If you invest more time into the method itself than in studying, it's not a good method. As always, feel free to share what works for you!!
