Met with the PSU Grad Counselor
The meeting went well though I learned that four of the classes I really wanted to take are no longer offered. That's not a deal breaker though - financial aid and housing issues aside, I had an excellent grad school experience with Portland State when I completed the PACE program, and I think it will be the right home (if I get in) for this degree as well.
I made a decision about my approach to my graduate essays and ran it by the counselor and she was very supportive. Basically, I'm going to talk about my experience in treatment for alcohol use disorder and how strongly it led to me wanting to pursue a career as a substance/alcohol addiction counselor. The writing will flow because I'm very passionate about it. I imagine it'll be about getting the focus and message laser accurate, rather than worrying about whether I have something to say.
It feels good to fully step into that - to allow myself to engage again with the work I do in this world full of dedication, joy, and intention. I'm not starry-eyed about this. I have lived experience of my own substance use as well as that of family and friends. I am 100% here to break generational curses. But because of that - because I know the goodness (the Buddha self) that can lie under the substance abuse - I am fiercely devoted to being part of the solution. In particular I am fiercely devoted to finding ways to help people outside of the twelve step model, which is so off-putting to so many people.
I've been in the doldrums a bit these past few weeks. This meeting (and the info session I attended last week) have helped the little seed of hope I have for the future begin to germinate. And that is a good feeling indeed.

It’s an interesting statement. I have always been confident and expressed myself. Then I discovered drugs and this destroyed part of my being. I became so used to the ritual, however the result was anything but confident and expressive. I then used more and more and the symptoms got worse. I developed anxiety and depression and kept repeating this cycle of addiction. What’s worse was I knew what I was doing and kept repeating. Sound familiar in your life or someone you care about deeply? It’s totally possible to remove addiction and BE that person you or that person you love was. Addiction destroys lives and relationships. I’ve worked hard on myself and tried many so-called “evidence-based practices” that didn’t work for me. In fact, because I believed they were evidence-based and didn’t work, and it was me, causing more and more anxiety and depression. The truth is, these “evidence based practices” don’t serve us anymore, many developed in the 1930’s, like the 12 step model, incorporating AA. Our world has changed so much in that time and with what may have worked then, doesn’t work now. We now understand that we can change the brain’s neuroplasticity and with that requires a different approach. That different approach is MC Counselling. Addiction & The Hungry Ghost
Tumblr media
Drugs swiftly take over your life. At first, it looks controllable and appears to provide favourable outcomes, but that is not the case in the long run. Other enjoyable activities become less pleasurable when drug use continues, and the person then feels the need to consume the substance just to feel "normal." As a result, they feel compelled to seek out and take drugs, even if doing so puts them and their loved ones in grave danger. The hunger never dies and the cycle goes on.
Buddhists have this belief in 'hungry ghosts'. The mouths of these hungry ghosts are little, but their stomachs are enormous. These wandering spirits are constantly on the search for something to eat. No matter how much they eat, they will never be satisfied. The horror of addiction is the same.
It's as if addicts have a 'void in their soul' that they are trying to fill with booze or drugs. No matter how much they stuff in there, it will never feel full.
What leads to this emptiness, and why is it hard to give up?
Mental illness and addiction are frequently accompanied by emptiness. Failure to treat the root cause of addiction can lead to a person shifting from one addiction to another. It is essential to understand what makes one feel that way.
Emptiness might stem from:
Losing a sense of belonging and feeling disconnected
Isolation from ourselves or getting cut off from our close relationships.
Feeling separated from our higher power and spirit.
Unresolved trauma
Drug abuse changes the way the brain functions and corrupts other basic impulses like learning and motivation by changing how the brain perceives pleasure. Without dopamine, we have no motivation. When an addict shoots cocaine, crystal meth, or any other drug, their brain receives a rush of dopamine. For the addict, this creates an ongoing cycle of drug use that is tough to break.
Like Hungry Ghosts, addicts are caught in a nightmare of never being able to satisfy their excessive yearning due to ignorance. They might be able to break free if they realise that sustaining the addiction isn't the answer. They may be content if they realised that the comfort and the mental healing they seek must come from inside.
Feeding an addiction's hunger can never provide satisfaction; it will only lead to further hunger. It will be much simpler to break free from addiction if we realise that alcohol and drugs can never deliver what we need. It is important to understand the root cause of the addiction and to seek the help of an expert who specializes in drug addiction counselling.

Welcome... I am Francesca, a Gestalt Psychotherapist with 12 years of experience in supporting my clients through: emotional and psychological difficulty in times of transition; navigating the delicate balance of autonomy and intimacy within healthy relationships, and exploring when this cycle is off; holding a safe space for grief and loss and past trauma; working with anxiety in all of its forms; healing through depression and other various stuck places.
As I utilize an non-pathologizing approach in my practice, I believe psychotherapy is never about being broken or unwell, but instead about being willing to sit with what is in the moment. . .what messages your body and deeper self are trying to communicate. These messages are often expressed through repeating behaviors, intense feelings, illness, addictive patterns, unrest in beloved relationships. It is simply for us to listen in a supportive environment, with compassion and awareness. Indeed what shows up as we slow down to listen may bring with it discomfort and emotional vulnerability, it may also be experienced as a gift . . . a gift of coming back to yourself/your center, you only better.
One of my passions in psychotherapy, is relationships and couples work. I feel deep gratitude in supporting clients build bridges to one another. Especially exciting is when each partner is sharing the same need, albeit unaware that the other is on the same page as they are having trouble truly hearing one another, until it is explored in my office with objective and safe reflection and this is realized. Ah. . .what a relief and happy moment that is.
Much of what we bring to therapy is centered around our connection with others, so having awareness of how we work with our boundaries within our relationships, is fundamental to a solid sense of ourselves, what we need, and how much we can give. We can then decide when to go forward and extend out and be bold. . .and when to pull back and go inside and into self care.
My clients cite my presence and authenticity, warmth and humor, that allow them to truly be who they are, to experience themselves and be at ease in the process.
Please call me for a free phone consultation, it is my pleasure: 917-647-7126
