tbh it amazes me the sheer extent that the western mind-body dualism idea has been taken and its reproductions, even while its being critiqued
the whole academic language around ""bodies"" is just one particularly annoying and debumanizing example. but its absolutely willlldddd to me that even while we say that mind-body dualism has had a series of negative consequences for western medicine, were Still pushing for it
the fact that weve gotten to the point where saying "your body affects who you are" and "you are your body" is ""biological determinism"" or ""biological essentialism"" is bloody insane it really is. people just throw words around like nothing
denying that you are your body or that your body affects who you are as a person is entirely ruptured from reality. if you have a disorder which impacts the physical structure of your brain, this will 100% affect you, because you are your brain and body. ptsd has visible affects on the structure of the brain, depression does, dissociative disorders can be seen in which parts of the brain are turned on or off. people with psychopathy are shown to have different brain structures to an extent. if you get a disease which degenerates your brain neurons, the connections, or your brain matter this will absolutely impact who you are and may lead to memory loss, drastic personality chance, agression, and a series of other things. if you get a brain tumor, a traumatic brain injury, or have parts of your brain removed this has been shown time and time again to have at times radical affects on who people are, their personalities, their emotions, how they process and handle things. a lobotomy shows quite damn well that your body affects who you are
,,,,, not even just the brain??? disregulatities in gut bacteria have been shown to lead to depression, which surely impacts behavior emotion and how you see the world and react. autoimmune diseases can attack the brain and lead to psychosis or other states. hornomal imbalances absolutely have an effect on the brain and body, because we are absolutely affected by our hormomes. women who have had hysterectomies, women who have gone through menapause medical or natural certainly know this, many women especially women with ptos and pmdd can certainly testify that ovulation and periods can lead to drastic emotional and personality chances such as suddenly suicidality, irritability, hypersensitivity, anger, deep sadness and depression etc, while the effects of cross-sex hormones on transexual individuals also show chances in behavior, emotion, and processing. it is known too if someone has hormone imbalances this can lead to behavior such as being more emotional, more agressive, or a series of other things. we know this to be true in other animals, and we are just. other animals too
even beyond that for gods sake. there have been several interesting cases of peoples personalities and interests changing after organ transplants to be closer to those of the person the transplant came from, despite them not knowing of the person previously - perhaps we will soon get that conciousness exists not only in the brain, but throughout the body in some way. it has also been shown that things such as religious feelings and out of body experiences can be reliably induced medically throughout the manipulation of hormonal and chemical levels in the body, as well as activations of certain parts of the brain. psychadelics are substances which are physically ingested and while they alter our minds and perhaps spirit, they are doing so by very much physically, bodily affecting our brains, the connections in them and what chemicals get released.
to simply deny that the body has an affect on who we are is Absurd, it is the peak of western mind-body duality which has had so many negative medical consequences, and its just leading apart from stupid adacemic disorder, to this ongoing thing with people deadass thinking they can do just about anything to their bodies (themselves) without impacting their psyche (also themselves)
perhaps souls exist, and perhaps spirit exists too. surely. but in this mortal realm, they are intimately bound and tied and processes theough the physical body, and anyway most spiritual and religious beliefs understand this

November Promptathon | I am open for prompts!
Inspired by this picture set. I wasn't sure whether to do pining academics or rival academics who are secretly married, so I went for the former. Happy reading!
Stifling a yawn, John Sheridan stole a glance away from the papers he was grading to reach for his watch. The dial was blurry for a moment before it read twenty past nine. Sliding off his glasses, John rubbed a hand over his face. He still had over twenty papers to hand back before tomorrow’s class on the fall of the Vorlon Empire. Deciding he needed a walk, John rose to his feet and left his office behind. Susan’s door was already shut; she’d been sensible and gone home hours ago. Michael’s door, with a giant Daffy Duck explaining office hours, was also closed. Even Marcus in the English department had already left.
You work too hard, Johnny, he thought to himself as his shoes clacked against the empty hallway. You need a break.
Continue reading below or read at AO3
His feet took him in the direction of the library. No particular reason; he didn’t need a book and Theo, the librarian, would have also gone home for the night. But John enjoyed the vaulted ceilings, the still quiet punctuated by the occasional turn of a page or the tap of a keyboard. He sought the smell of dust and antique paper that lingered in his nostrils. He sought the sanctuary he found amongst knowledge and puzzle. He sought her.
Entering the library, John felt his stomach gripped in a vice at the very sight of her. Dark curls fell across her shoulders and back; delicate fingers brushed along spines, catching index labels with the pads of her fingertips. Occasionally, Professor Mir would pause. Her fingers would gently coax a book from the shelf and she would read, teeth tugging upon her bottom lip as she found a new piece of the Universe as yet unexplored to her. His gaze remained unwavering as he crossed the threshold of the library; his eyes solely fixed upon her form. John was not one to be taken into flights of fantasy but as he climbed the stairs to Delenn, the scent of her perfume grew heavy in the air. He felt a tug – a golden thread attached to her wrist and with every movement he was drawn closer.
A few feet away, Delenn turned; noticed his approach. Her face brightened, lips pulling up into a soft, secret smile. John felt that last pull; a pull he hadn’t felt since, well, since Anna. He was over a cliff, trying to fly, and every flash of those green eyes, kept soft by the thin light of the library, was enough to keep him afloat.
“Hello, Delenn.”
“John.”
Since his appointment to the History department nine months ago, they had quickly settled into a routine. Conversations along the corridor to their lecture theatre of the afternoon; a barter system over who paid for coffee at the Zocalo, the university’s only decent caffeine depository. And then there was the library. Late night meetings in secluded stacks; Professor Sheridan giving way to John as easily as their hands brushed upon the same spine of a book. One day, they would give up this pretence of professionalism and John would find himself with a wooden shelf digging into his lower back as Professor Mir pressed her lips to the hollow of his throat.
“Enjoy your evening,” he said; the coward that he was, the grieving widower he still felt himself to be. One day.

May is a bona fide genius but like... she's very much limited by her own scope of knowledge. If you're talking about obscure Johtoan philosphers or wild Mightyena behavior, May is probably the most knowledgable people around. Genetics and Kalosian history... not so much. She's a script kiddy at best and absolute shit at any math more advanced than basic algebra.
She's got a decent amount of general knowledge about most subjects but for anything deeper than that, she'll probably to ask a friend / acquaintence for help because she tends to surround herself with people who can cover for her blind spots. If she needs a IT, physics, logistics or programming expert she goes to Metagross. If she needs a geologist she's got Steven, Roxanne or Maxie. Aqua and Magma act as her informants on the criminal underworld while her Devon contacts offer their insight on the corporate one.
( The trope of fictional geniuses knowing literally every field of study makes absolutely zero sense. And if some character has 10 PhDs w/o immortality as an excuse, that's a pretty good indication that the author has no idea what academia is actually like. Either most of those are honorary degrees or the guy is spending their entire life collecting degrees as a hobby. Real adacemics are too busy putting out studies and being worked to death by college administrators to go for more than one... Maybe two. If you're studying that many subjects, you're not gonna have the time to put any of that knowledge into practice. )

Hey dudes! I’m a new (high school) studyblr and I thought I’d say a bit about myself! I am currently prepping for a timed essay in Academic Decathlon/English Honors (yikes!). Our topic this year is the 1960’s though so that’s fun! I am also taking American History, Chemistry/Earth Science, Math III, Spanish II, and Studio Art. I have a really full plate this year so I thought I’d try the whole studyblr thing, I’m going to try and be somewhat consistent (easier said than done) but if anyone else is interested in/taking the same classes, or just wants to geek out about Star Wars or something, my inbox is always open! I’m excited to get started!

All of these are self explanatory, except James White, who I need to add has made great contributions to meaningful communication between Christians and Muslims.
I also should add that Ken Nwadike Jr. went out to the riots that occurred in 2016 and he and his hand picked team personally stopped violent encounters by talking down rioters.
Feel free to add
