Tutu, The Koi-Tailed Dancer

Tutu, also known as れんにゅう or Rennyu in Japanese and Mizuno, is a peppy bear villager from the Animal Crossing series. Hence her name, she’s devoted to dancing the night away! Twirlin, swirlin, whirlin, all those moves, she’s got ‘em! She’s got moves for eons, and nothing’s gonna stop her!

Unlike most other merfolk in Mizuno, Tutu’s tail is like that of a koi fish, which explains why it has blue spots all over. She’s not the only one who has a koi tail, though I don’t know anyone else with one. Oh well.

She was already one for dancing prior to transformation, but with the vast ocean, and her new tail, it’s been fully integrated into her life!

She is in a relationship with Megan. Her birthday is on September 15th.

some of my simmosa headcanons:

amy does the aster flores thing where she has a look for whenever she wants to be kissed.

jonah has letterboxd. he also runs an account for amy (named “my girlfriend amy” which appropriately gets changed to “my wife amy” once they get married) that blows up because she has funny things to say about films but no patience to document them. meanwhile his account has the patron tier, over a thousand films logged, and cleverly articulated reviews with meticulous ratings but only 9 followers.

amy wore the ring that jonah stole to get her measurements a lot while she was in california. mostly as a reminder of the mistake she’ll inevitably understand that she made but also because it’s strangely comfortable to have on.

jonah started a podcast right after the breakup. he stopped recording episodes after accidentally letting marcus move in with him and i’ve got no idea what it would be about but i think he would set up the stupidly costly mic that he bought online in front of amy’s plants and pretend they were his audience.

amy gets super into video games again over the pandemic. in between binge watching shows and attending corporate meetings, she becomes a real acnh woman, much to the dismay of emma. when she and jonah get back together, she forces him to play lovers in a dangerous spacetime. they kill it at that game in spite of whatever argument might ensue.

a list of some shows i think jonah has watched: succession, severance, the west wing, the wire, lost, black mirror, charmed.

the recall room stayed even after they converted cloud 9 into a fulfillment center since no one else knew about it, so amy and jonah still sneak in there sometimes for the fun of it. when they visit dina and the others for the first time, they disappear after ten minutes and everybody thinks they either got lost or crushed by some packages. (let’s be honest, they’re having another town hall moment.)

couples costumes they would do: elizabeth and philip jennings, climate change (she’s a polar bear and he’s a melting ice cap), romeo and juliet (specifically from the baz luhrmann movie obviously, though this is based off an original script of the pilot that has a nod to the fish tank scene, even though it was actually between jonah and dina but that is not important.)

so they’ve both always absolutely been bi to me. it’s an unspoken thing at work for jonah, so amy is the first person he actually tells, voices aloud that this is who he is a person, and that’s what she’s signing up for when they finally start dating. and it gets gears turning in her head. this is a lot of projection on my end but i think amy looks back at the women she filed away as formative role models in her head and wonders whether there was something more there. remembers how she always thought someone like missy jones looked so gorgeous but thought that had more to do with being blinded by her talent. jonah helps amy figure out her feelings for women once he finds out she thought staring at them all the time was a normal thing to do.

they have the same taste in people. i have a whole episode made up in my mind about them figuring this out and the discovery spiraling to the point that they have everybody in the break room naming truly anyone to see if they both have a crush on the person or not. they have multiple whiteboards with the most complicated system ranking countless celebrities and the whole thing ends when jonah asks amy if she actually finds him attractive but she successfully avoids giving him an answer by making out with him. she does btw but she would never tell him because it would go to his head immediately and he would never let her live it down.

amy wearing name tags with different names every single day is her way of playing around with gender but nobody is ready for that conversation yet.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #176

Pinnipeds, the seals, sea lions, and walrus, are a fascinating group of mammals - they are one of the four groups that have returned to the ocean (the others being cetaceans (whales), sirenians (manatees & dugong), and the small subfamily of Lutrinae within the Mustelidae (otters)). There are plenty of other animals returning to the sea gradually (did you know the polar bear is considered a marine mammal?), but these are the big ones people mostly think of when you say "marine mammal". When we covered Phineas the Sea Lion, we spoke a lot about Pinnipeds as a group, but we left out the walrus, since Animal Crossing actually features this unique seal-relative as Wendell.

Wendell was an NPC in basically every iteration of Animal Crossing until New Horizons. If you fed him (anything, really), he would give you a pattern to use in your town. Obviously, in ACNH he's obsolete now that we have the Custom Designs Kiosk at the Able Sister's shop, as well as the patterns you get from Sable.

Wendell is clearly a walrus with his big fat body, flippers, and those long tusks. There is only one species of walrus - (Odobenus rosmarus) - the last member of the once-diverse family Odobenidae. This means that walruses are neither considered "eared seals" in Otariidae or "true seals" in Phocidae, although they share characteristics with both groups. Of the two other pinniped groups, walruses are more closely related to the eared seals, like sea lions, although they lack the external ears characteristic of the group. Still, walruses can bring their hind legs underneath them to waddle about like sea lions do on land, even though they swim more like a true seal. However, walruses are different from other seals in that they have a very unique method of feeding, using a suction-like maneuver - not all extinct species of walrus cousins had tusks. The lone walrus is an Arctic species, living life near the North Pole on sea ice and Northern shores.

I probably don't have to tell you that the walrus is MASSIVE. Adult males in the Pacific subspecies can grow to be between 7 to 11 feet (3.6m) in length and weigh up to 3,700 lbs (1700kg). This puts the walrus at #3 in the largest pinnipeds, only out-sized by the two species of elephant seal. We will consider Wendell at this larger size as a Pacific Walrus, which I guess explains his hunger for most anything edible. It's kind of a shame you can't cook for him in ACNH.

For the public, the walrus' tusks are its defining feature. For walruses, they are vitally important. Male walruses will use their tusks for display and to fight other males that may challenge them to the rights of a harem of females. As the walrus ages, its tusks get longer - so you can tell an old bull from a spritely juvenile fairly quickly, even if they are around the same size. Both females and males grow tusks, which should tip you off that they are used for more than sexual display. Walruses will use them for general defense, although, when you're that massive, you have very little to worry about. Female walruses often have to defend their babies from predators, like polar bears, since even the ferocity of a polar bear has trouble getting through the adult walrus' thick hide. They also use their tusks as tools, such as digging in ice to keep air holes clear or to help hoist their massive bulk out of the water onto the ice. All around those tusks are also extremely sensitive, bristly whiskers called vibrissae they guide along the seafloor to find their favorite foods.

And there you have it! Fascinating stuff, no?

here’s a fun fact about me. my uncle made me a cassette tape copy of his phantom of the opera CD when i was 11 (portable CD players were not really much of a thing then yet, especially not for an 11yo who lost everything he ever owned) and i brought it to school and listened to it on my walkman basically every day.

also my bedroom in acnh is decorated in browns and golds, a lot of wood, and polar bears are my favorite animals. so like, a+, anon. you just passed zackology 101.
