Blue Lock Is the New "It" Sports Anime (Anime Review)
Honestly, I should be finishing the anime I need to finish. Why am I procrastinating and watching Blue Lock instead? I can’t help it. It’s so good (and I totally didn’t watch for Chigiri). I actually like watching sports anime. I love Kuroko’s Basketball, Haikyuu!!, and Yowamushi Pedal. There’s just something that’s charming about sports anime that I cannot fully explain.
Tumblr media
The first thing that caught my attention with Blue Lock was the character designs. They’re all so detailed. I also love the way the eyes are drawn. I love how unique all of the characters look, even the minor, unimportant ones. Afterwards, I’ve been seeing a lot of fan art drawn by talented artists. I’ve been liking them left and right on Twitter. After liking a lot of fan art, I’ve decided that it was time for me to sit down and watch Blue Lock.
What makes Blue Lock so unique compared to other sports shows? This one has more risks as it’s a sports series mixed with a survival game. Given that I am someone who’ve watched Produce 101—all four of them—and got emotionally wrecked all the time, I knew this would be the perfect show for me. Was I wrong? I wasn’t. There was drama, suspense and everything else you can find in sports and survival shows.
The story is about Yoichi Isagi, who lost a soccer match by passing the ball to his teammate, costing his team to lose their chance at going to Nationals. He becomes frustrated at the fact that he decided to pass and not take a score for himself. Soon, he gets an invitation by Jinpachi Ego, a member of the Japanese Football Association, in order to partake in a project called Blue Lock where he’s searching for someone who can change Japanese soccer for the better—to become the best striker in the world. It turns out that he and 299 other strikers were selected. The Blue Lock project is one of survival—only the best can become the best striker. Isagi gets placed in a room with 11 other people and their first task is to eliminate someone and end their soccer career for good—those who get eliminated in Blue Lock cannot play for Japan Nationals ever again. With Isagi deciding to take out the strongest player in the room, Ryosuke Kira, the guy he had faced in his soccer match, he learns that he has to become selfish in order to become the best. In order to prove to his colleagues and to Ego that he’s the best, he needs to evolve, get stronger, and survive.
The first episode was super intense with the way Isagi decided to go for Kira and not Igarashi. The fact that he had ended his soccer career and felt good about it shows that this sports anime is definitely different than the norm. The episodes afterwards gets more intense as Team Z, Isagi’s team, are very dysfunctional and have to find a way to cooperate in order to survive.
The First Selection Arc was great in itself. This arc is getting to learn about Team Z and why they play soccer. For Kunigami, he wants to be a soccer superhero. For Bachira, he wants to find someone who can quench the monster inside of him. For Chigiri, it’s to find a way to give up on soccer. The fact that everyone has unique pasts makes the group diverse and makes people want them to succeed, even if it means they have to get eliminated later on. The matches with Teams X, Y, W and V were intense. Z vs X was pretty much a curb-stomp due to Z’s dysfunctional dynamic and X’s ace member Barou being too OP for them to handle. It’s when they face Team Y is when they finally cooperate, albeit begrudgingly. This is also when Isagi gets more aware of his ability of spatial awareness, where he can visualize the field and predict where a goal can be made and who he needs to use in order to utilize that path. My favorite match was Team Z vs Team W because of the Chigiri spotlight and also the fact that Kuon betrayed Team Z to Team W, a plot point that shows that no one in Blue Lock is an ally and that anyone can use whatever tactics they have in order to survive. If not for Chigiri finally getting motivation to play soccer again and doing it because he loves outrunning everyone, Team Z would have lost; this also cemented Chigiri as my favorite character. Team Z vs Team V was an intense match too. It’s second place because Chigiri doesn’t get as much focus here, but that’s okay. Team V is the strongest team because they have three aces, Reo, Nagi and Zantetsu with Nagi being their strongest player. Reo and Nagi only played soccer for six months while Zantetsu can outrun Chigiri, making them menaces. Nagi, who normally only moved whenever Reo asked him to do so, decided to move on his own once the score became equal. Team V loses because of Isagi and Team V experiences their first loss.
I think the best thing about the First Selection arc is the character bondings. While Isagi does befriend his fellow teammates, he becomes especially close with Bachira, Kunigami and Chigiri. Given that I am a fujoshi, this did fuel my BL kicks (It’s amusing how the initials of Blue Lock are BL). Because this is a survival game, the character bondings get a bit dramatic as characters need another in order to survive. Speaking of which, Reo and Nagi are probably fruitier than Bokuto and Akaashi from Haikyuu and that’s saying something.
The Second Selection Arc is where the drama kicks in as nobody are teammates any longer. You have to make a team of three and then advance by defeating other teams and taking their teammates. You only survive to the Third Selection once you get a team of five. Isagi causes two breakups to happen and he had to lose Bachira in the process. However, this arc is where many characters show off more of what they can do, so I feel like it’s a good ascension to the first arc. Isagi learns to handle the most unorthodox of people and manages to win via unpredictability, spatial awareness and main character power. While he had no specific rival in the first arc, the second arc solidifies Rin Itoshi as his rival as he is the cooler, most advanced version of himself. The fact that Isagi loses to Rin twice shows that while Isagi is improving, he still has a long way to go before he reaches his own full potential. I do like how while Isagi is strong enough to take down foes like Barou, Kunigami, Chigiri and Reo, it was because he had already faced them before. In Rin’s case, he had never played with him before and was only aware of his existence once the second arc started. I do like Rin’s inclusion into the story, as someone Isagi needs to beat.
The anime ends on the first half of the third arc, I believe. The Third Selection has two parts. The first being that the newly formed team of five has to challenge 5 world renowned athletes from different countries. I feel like Isagi got a bit cocky during the match and that was the reason why his team got pulverized. However, it also showed that Isagi still has a long way to go before he reaches foreign athletes’ levels. Fortunately, that portion was an assessment. Once six other teams of five make it to the Third Selection (RIP Kunigami), the anime ends with Ego announcing that his original plans for the third selection had changed and that his new plan is to get the Top 35 to face off agains the U-20 team with their recent addition being Sae Itoshi, Rin’s older brother. Given that the third selection was towards the last two episodes, there wasn’t much time for me to get used to it or Isagi’s new team since they haven’t really bonded as a team of five.
My favorite match of this entire anime was the match between Isagi, Nagi and Barou vs Chigiri, Reo and Kunigami. I think this match was the most exhilarating of them all. The reason is that Isagi has to be up against two of the teammates he’s the closest to back in the first selection and Nagi has to be up against his ex-boyfriend former partner Reo whom he abandoned because he wanted to team up with Isagi. Barou had to learn how to cooperate after being completely disobedient since his introduction. It also showcases how good the Kunigami and Chigiri are without Isagi and how well Reo can play without Nagi. It was an intense battle that legit got me hyped up for what’s to come in future seasons.
My only gripe with this anime is the lackluster animation quality. For an anime that revolves around a lot of movement, the animation is only good during important sequences, but it’s not very good at slower, non-soccer scenes. There’s a lot of CG usage too, especially when showing scenes of other players chasing the ball. I think Episode 8 was the worst offender since that was the one with the worst animation quality.
I’m honestly wanting more Blue Lock now. I might read the manga just to see what’s ahead. Blue Lock Season 2 and a movie adaptation of the Nagi side story has been announced, so I’ll definitely check those out! Until then, thanks for reading my long review of Blue Lock!

Round 2
Daiki Aomine (Kuroko no Basket) vs Shoei Barou (Blue Lock)
Daiki Aomine
Tumblr media
Sport: Basketball
Appearance: short dark blue hair, dark blue eyes, 192 cm (6' 3½"), japanese
Propaganda: Aomine Daiki was the ace player in the prodigious group known as "The Generation of Miracles." This was a group of middle school basketball players who were so unbelievably talented and gifted that they completely dominated all other schools they came across for 3 years straight. Aomine was the first to unlock his "potential," effortlessly scoring baskets and dunks left and right without any opposition. This however, turned out to be a massive burden to him. Aomine, the one who played and loved basketbally more than anyone else, now found himself alone on the court. No one could challenge him. The sport he dedicated himself to lost all meaning. There was no longer any fun to be had. This realization broke Aomine. He went from a smiling, outgoing guy to a more sullen one. His mood completely shifted, and he would remain this way until he could find a worthy rival. Ultimately, Aomine's journey shows that the true fun in sports comes not from winning, but from the competition and fierce battles one can have. To be able to go all out to the best of one's abilities and have fun is the essence of sports.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shoei Barou
Tumblr media
Sport: Football
Appearance: Long black hair, red eyes, 187 cm, Japanese. In more recent chapters he's literally built like Miguel O'hara.
Propaganda: Blue Lock (the project) aims to create a striker that plays for themselves first and foremost. Scoring goals is the most important thing here and Barou applies to that perfectly. He is arrogant and selfish and only cares about being the protagonist of every game he's in. He calls himself 'King' and so does everyone else. He 'devours' his teammates for the sake of scoring. One time he passed to a guy he had been defeated by in the past and imagined an entire alternate future reality where he was alone in his home drinking and watching that guy score the goal that won him the world cup??? And that motivated him to develop a new play style??????!!!!!??? If I remember correctly he also stole the ball off him. Also the only match that we've seen him cooperate is because his coach literally gave him an entire team to lead without question. He's the best.

10 Fandoms, 10 Characters, 10 People
Thanks for the tag @jaywalkers <3. I love your list of characters, you’ve got great taste : )
Rules: name 10 of your favourite characters from 10 different fandoms, then tag 10 people to do the same
1) Andrew Minyard from All For the Game
My blorbo of all time probably. No character has given me brainrot and writing inspiration the way he does and likely no character ever will. This post sums up his appeal perfectly
2) Lan Wangji from Mo Dao Zu Shi
My newest blorbo from my most recently joined fandom. What can I say, I’m a sucker for incredibly queer competent stoic prob neurodivergent men that are absolutely insane about one person. When I watch the MDZS donghua, I literally have to pause every time he comes on the screen just so I can stare at him a bit, so you could say I’m a bit obsessed
3) Kim Theerapanyakul from KinnPorsche
He’s this weird little guy that is simultaneously the most competent character in the show and the biggest cringe-fail loser. He looks so suave and cool on the surface with his whole Taylor Swift by day mafia prince detective by night thing but then you realize he’s actually a complete nerd with a whole ass literal murder conspiracy board hidden behind a giant selfie portrait of himself and I love him so much (also he’s played by Jeff Satur, who makes my aesthetic attraction senses go haywire, but that’s neither here nor there)
4) Kyuzo from Samurai 7
My 1st fictional crush and prob my earliest blorbo. My type in favorite fictional male character (hypercompetent stoic character that doesn’t talk much with bonus points for iconic hair) can 100% be attributed to him. His story was the earliest villain redemption arc I can remember encountering in media (this was the 1st anime I ever watched so I was like 4 or 5 when I 1st saw this guy) and so for me I always think of him when I see people talking about iconic redemption arcs (sorry Zuko)
5) Midorima Shintarou from Kuroko no Basket
At the peak of my high school sports anime phase, this guy was my favorite. He’s tall, he’s green, he’s an anime glasses character™️, he’s tsundere, he’s prissy, he’s weird af, he’s got one of the most bonkers basketball skills ever, and he’s even an astrology girlie. What’s not to love
6) Merlin from BBC Merlin
BBC Merlin is the fandom that sucked me in at a time where I thought I was growing out of fandom and fanfic (spoiler alert: I very much was not) and it’s responsible for completely changing my relationship with fandom into something much more intense than it was previously. And it’s all thanks to this funky skinny wizard man who for whatever reason captivated me enough that I read hundreds of thousands of fan-created words about him for nearly a year and a half
7) Jasnah Kholin from The Stormlight Archive
She’s one of the rare canonically asexual female characters, and she’s even from a major fantasy book series too! I fixated on this character long before I knew I was ace (though perhaps that should’ve been a clue lol), mostly because I just thought she was so cool and I found her whole “why would I want a relationship when I’m busy with all this shit to study” attitude so relatable
8) Katara from Avatar: The Last Airbender
I wanted to be her so badly when I was a kid y’all have no idea. She just made such an impression on me because she’s so cool and so strong but also unapologetically and obviously feminine and that really struck a chord with young me and is prob the reason why I didn’t really have a “not like the other girls” phase cuz she was revolutionary for little me’s idea of how a “girl” can be. To this day she is the character that to me has the coolest powers ever
9) Cassandra of Troy from Greek Mythology
It’s prob weird to include her but I was a real greek mythology girlie (in that I was into it before Percy Jackson came out) and Cassandra has always my favorite. The tragedy of her story has always been very appealing to me and upsettingly relatable in a lot of ways
10) Kym Ladell from Purple Hyacinth
Ms. Kym one of those characters that’s ostensibly the comedic relief except nope she’s hiding oceans of pain under her smile. She’s got trauma and a tragic backstory that she hides from the rest of the main characters in one of the strongest “this is fine” performances you’ve ever seen

i was never good at sports - an ~250 follower sports au collab
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I’m tired of waitin’, I was never good at sports…” or ARE YOU??
Sports, in general, have been a part of our lives in some way or the other. Whether you're someone who likes to watch cricket, football, or basketball on the screen or has gone out to play and even won medals, we've all been there! So, as a mark of welcoming summer, celebrating my 5th monthversary of my blog being a solely writing blog, and to celebrate me getting almost 250 followers (lol, we'll get there dw :D), I thought of hosting this collab.
This is an SFW multifandom Sports AU Collab that's open to all writers AND artists! So, all of these are fair game:
all sports animes (Haikyuu, Kuroko No Basket, Free, Yuri on Ice, Diamond no Ace, Blue Lock, etc)
non-sports animes & other fandoms (Marvel, DC, Moon Knight, Obey Me, Genshin Impact, etc) but in sports AU (quarterback Kento Nanami, swimmer Jotaro Kujo, baseball player Yuuji Itadori, soccer player Steven Grant, etc)
if your character has not gone pro in a sports anime
if the reader is a professional sports player.
if the character or reader is a manager for the team.
if the character or reader is a trainer for the team.
if the character from one sports anime plays a different sport
Tumblr media
Rules: (under the cut)
-> As it is SFW, all genres are allowed, EXCEPT for smut and dark content (mildly suggestive is okay).
-> You must be following me for this collab (since it's a follower celebration collab), and I'd appreciate it if you don't unfollow me after everyone's posted <3
-> No limit to word count, however, please do include a read more if your fic is 500+ words to avoid clogging the dashboard.
-> Open to multiple fandoms, but for simplicity purposes, a person can choose 2 characters at the max, and every character can be chosen thrice at the max to involve some variety in the masterlist. :D So, just in case, please keep some backups. Exceptions: Daiki Aomine and Jotaro Kujo (since I’m writing on them, I’m leaving three more spots open for them)
-> Oh and most importantly, there is no due date for the collab. So, please take your time <33
-> If you're including multiple characters in one story, the characters' entries are counted (love triangles especially)
-> When your entry is accepted, please reblog this post as much as you can. When you’re done, please tag me at @/tetsukentona and use the following hashtag: #⚽.nevergoodatsportscollab for a guaranteed reblog :D and please don’t forget to attach a link to the master list. If you’re the first to write for any fandom that’s not listed, I’ll add that accordingly.
How to join:
-> Please send me your application requests for the collab through asks and not private DMs, and do specify if it’s a write-up or artwork.
-> I will also allow changes if necessary (change of character/sport, dropping from the collab), so in case there's any change, you can send me an ask OR you can DM me if we're server moots on discord, that works too :D
Eg: Can I please join the collab with Daiki Aomine from Kuroko No Basket and Basketball? It will be an artwork, and he'll be on the Lakers team, or Can I please join the collab with Kento Nanami from Jujutsu Kaisen and Rugby/American Football? It will be a write-up.

Good boy... GOOD BOY?!
Kuroko is trying his best to convince Kagami that Tetsuya #2 is harmless and really sweet, but nothing seems to work. The puppy decides to take the matter in his own... paws
A/N: Good evening guys!! How are you? 🍡 Today's fic is a request from @wertzunge and it's my first Kuroko no Basket work, as I told you yesterday. Buona lettura 💚🤍❤️ (Have a nice reading)
DISCLAIMER: This is a tickle fic, if it's not to your taste I don't suggest you read it
Tumblr media
The basketball gym at Serin High School wasn't exactly a quiet place. Actually, it was anything but quiet between the noise of everyone steps, balls bouncing and the coach's whistling and loud voice. But that day it was noisier than usual.
"KUROKO!! I TOLD YOU TO KEEP THAT THING AWAY FROM ME!" Kagami's voice was so loud that it created an echo in the room. "He's not a thing," the blue-haired boy quickly corrected him "and he's harmless. He's at least twenty times smaller than you." The dog barked in response and jumped into Kuroko's arms eager to get some scritches.
"I don't care how big or small he is," the ace of the basketball team replied with an irritated and subtly scared tone "he's a dog! He can bite!!" He backed away while his best friend followed him. The sixth man's face was expressionless, but it was more than clear that he was having fun.
Their chasing and bickering went on for a while, and they were lucky that the coach had left earlier or they would've been scolded for sure. "Oh sorry the ball slipped from my ha- watch out Kagami!" Shinji's voice resonated through the place, but the red-haired guy didn't hear the warning in time and tripped on the ball, falling on his butt.
After making sure he was alright, everyone started snickering and replaying the scene in their mind, and even Kagami was smiling. He knew it was funny and it could've happened to everyone. What he wasn't expecting at all was a surprise attack from a certain furball, now that his guard was down.
Tetsuya #2 was getting restless in Kuroko's embrace, so the guy put him down to let him run. However, the puppy ran straight towards Kagami and jumped on him in sign of affection. He was more than determined to show to the tall human that he was a good boy, and not someone to be afraid of! To prove that to him, the dog nuzzled and licked his face and neck, anywhere he could reach, not realizing that he was getting the opposite effect.
"K-KUROKO!! GET THIS THING OFF OF ME ALREADYEHE-" The red-haired player covered his mouth with his hand, hoping that no one had noticed what had just happened. Luckily no one did, and Kuroko picked up the mascot eventually, although he vehemently reminded him that he wasn't a thing.
When practice was over everyone went home, but Kagami and Kuroko decided to stay some more to improve their speed and coordination. After another slam dunk, the redhead wiped the sweat off his forehead and grinned "We're getting faster, right Kuroko?" He turned around perplexed "Kuroko? Where are y-AAAHH" He suddenly jumped while shielding his sides with his hands.
The blue-eyed guy had used his "secret ability" to disappear for a second and reappear behind his friend and give a firm jab to his sides. He just wanted to test something he'd noticed when Tetsuya #2 was "assaulting" the taller player, and he was pretty satisfied with the results.
Sensing the playful mood, the dog rushed towards them and barked happily. "THAT THING AGAIN!!" The ace exclaimed in fear and exasperation. Kuroko approached the two of them to take the mascot away, but then he had a mischievous idea. At the last moment, he latched his hands on his friend's hips and squeezed and poked the bones.
"WHAT THE- nohohot yohohohou ahagahahain!" The poor guy broke into a fit of laughter, unable to hold back. "He's not a thing, admit it." The blue-haired boy used his short stature and speed to his advantage to not get caught by the redhead, who was turning around over and over in an attempt to stop him.
"I told you to admit he's not a thing. Say it or I won't stop." The smaller guy replied with a hint of amusement in his tone, while poking all over his teammate's torso, spidering his fingers on his toned belly, worming his index fingers into his underarms and drilling his thumbs into his hips. "Shuhuhut uhuhup and stohohop ihit alreheheahahady!!" Kagami knew that the smartest choice was to just say it and put an end to his friend's shenanigans, but seeing (better yet, hearing, since he was using his invisibility powers) Kuroko amused was such a rare sight that he wanted to carry on a little more.
And maybe he wasn't exactly distressed or uncomfortable with the situation...
Not knowing what to do to escape the tickles, the ace decided to drop to the floor and have his chances in a wrestling match on the ground. As expected, Tetsuya was quick to follow him, and Kagami's plan would've succeeded if it weren't for the unfair intervention of the certain furball.
Having a dog right next to him made the taller player yelp, and that distraction was all Kuroko needed to effectively pin him down. The blue-haired boy knew he had no chance of beating the other when it came to strength, so he pinned his hands above his head with his knees, instead of straddling him and using only one hand to keep him still.
The tickle attack resumed almost immediately with the sixth man sliding his fingers up and down the ribcage and underarms, randomly digging in just to enjoy the startled increase in pitch of Kagami's laughter. "Kurohohokohooo stahAHAHAhap ihihit WAHAHA!!" The red-eyed guy was still too stubborn to let him go just yet, so Kuroko just carried on, watching him squirm and struggle to get away.
With all that movement, the tank top of his uniform had rolled up a little, and the puppy noticed it with excitement. He immediately climbed on top of Kagami, who was too busy laughing to even notice, and started licking the exposed skin. No one knows if he did it to show affection, or to mimic what the shorter guy was doing to get the same happy reaction, or both but the roaring laughter that echoed in the gym was priceless.
"GEHEHET THAHAHAHAHAT THIHIHING AHAHAWAHAHAYEHEHEHE" The redhead didn't even know he was so sensitive on his belly, maybe it was the different touch... but it wasn't the right time to think about that. He still had to break free. He didn't even know that a puppy could tickle that much, even the fluffy paws trying their best to not fall felt tingly on his skin. He really was in quite the predicament.
Luckily for him, Kuroko thought it wasn't safe to let Tetsuya #2 stay on the taller guy when he was squirming so much so he got up and quickly straddled him before getting tge dog off. Kagami instantly covered his torso with his hands, but his friend simply gave him a tiny smug smirk and turned around before getting off.
He proceeded to lay the redhead's shins on his lap, not without an intense struggle, and crossed his legs to trap them. Then he scribbled under his knees with one hand while squeezing right above the kneecaps with the other.
If he thought that the previous laughter was loud, it was nothing compared to the one that broke out the second his fingertips touched Kagami's knees. It was boisterous, just like him; Kuroko thought it suited him perfectly.
However, the fun came soon to an end. It turned out that, despite being so strong, tough and cool, even the ace was weak to being tickled in his most sensitive spot. "YOHOHOU WIHIHIHIN!! HEHEHEHE'S NOHOHOHOHOHOHOT AHAHA THIHIHIHING!" As soon as the red-eyed guy admitted it, the tickling stopped and he found himself free from the blue-haired player's clutches.
After Kagami had calmed down from the residual giggles, Tetsuya #2 started headbutting Kuroko, who was still sitting on the ground, because he felt left out and wanted attention. The shorter guy laughed a little and turned around to give him some tummy rubs. The puppy panted happily with his tongue sticking out and the sixth man awed internally at that sight. "See? He's a good boy..."
"Good boy..." Kuroko could almost see his teammate's furious aura building up around him "GOOD BOY?! IF I HAD TO GO THROUGH ALL OF THAT, IT WAS BECAUSE OF H-"
"Don't you wanna pet him..?"
Kagami could've said no to that request, but something in his friend's wide, expectant eyes and his hopeful tone made it impossible for him to refuse. He scooted closer and tentatively put his hand on the puppy's stomach, astonished at its softness, then he wiggled his fingers to give some scritches to the little rascal.
Maybe Tetsuya #2 was a good boy, who knows...

knb s1 rewatch post
i just finished rewatching the first 25-26 episodes of knb for the...i wanna say third? fourth time? and thing that jumps out to me is how strong kagami's character arc starts out, and how amazingly kuroko's character arc ends!
Tumblr media
these two are no doubt the heart of the series, but it's an earned title for sure and never taken for granted! kuroko is so complicated, so full of anger, sadness, regret, but also so full of hope and dedication and kindness and all the things that you'd want from a sports protagonist (even if he's Not Like Other Heroes of this genre). he starts out season 1 with a point to prove using his basketball, but ends the season wondering what his actual basketball is beyond his gimmicky misdirection.
additionally, with all the reminders of his past constantly coming up in front of him, another challenge for him seems to be whether he can truly break free from what teikou made him out to be and find out who he is under seirin. wonderfully, this is a challenge all the boys seem to be facing, and they are all desperate for change, especially aomine, who really wants to be proven wrong about all the cynicism he has mustered up about the sport he loves.
meanwhile, kagami is such a delight, all hot-tempered and impatient and pure power. his first defeat against aomine has him contemplating what it really means to be an ace, and also what it means to play basketball with a team. he's gone from insulting kuroko to relying on him too heavily, unable to strike a healthy balance between pure autonomy and cooperative teamwork.
speaking of which, a big theme of the season (and the show itself, by extension) seems to be the senpai's influence. this is probably the most overused trope in sports anime, but the thing about overused tropes is that if you use them with thoughtfulness and sincerity, it really works, even if it's a story you've seen a 1,000 times before. fear of sincerity is the death of art, especially in genres like this and i'm happy that knb is unafraid to show how serious and unironic this game is to these boys
Tumblr media
it's been interesting to see the kiseki kids contend with the fact that there are other people on the team with hopes, dreams, regrets and bad memories with the sport, just like them. the ultimate reality of the generation of miracles is that they were a team of one generation; but the senpais have their own stories to tell, their own desires, and having them in the GOMs life makes them better, makes them team players. they are no longer playing for themselves, but for the people that they spend time training with, the people that they share jokes and cry with.
that being said, it is astonishing what a bad senpai imayoshi is LMAO. where kasamatsu (and SEIRIN) are quite involved with their kids' growth, imayoshi behaves in ways that are actually bad for aomine in the long run. it's surprisingly wakamatsu who has the correct insight, but no one seems to be taking him seriously at touou just yet*
nonetheless, the season ends with aomine's POV being validated (remember, your virtues don't mean shit unless you validate them with a victory) but neither kise nor kuroko have been destroyed entirely by their respective defeats, and midorima is just as eager to swing back. the winter cup is going to be one hell of a clash between opposing ideologies!
stand-out characters: kagami, kuroko, riko, kiyoshi, kise, midorima, aomine
* [spoiler alert: watching this season while knowing wakamatsu becomes captain after imayoshi is...a very very interesting experience!] all in all a great set-up season!

how do characters in knb use tiktok
(long post) shutoku and yosen r under the cut ... PLEASE
SEIRIN: tbh no one really uses tiktok actively but they have a pretty flop "official" seirin basketball club tiktok. it has a grand total of 3 videos on it. 1 of koga going i can do it!! then failing to make a shot (see sukai kinjo viral video), 1 kiyoshi questionable hospital thirst trap ?? (tbh no one knows hes kinda just sent it to them one day n asked them to put it on the tiktok w a smiley emoji) and 1 koga took of izuki talking to hyuuga from a distance where the camera zooms in on him then one of those pink sparkly frames appears as izuki stares directly into the camera w a really unamused look. hyuuga hates tiktok dances since theyre wasting practice time which riko agrees w but really hyuuga is just embarrassed by them. anyways of all 3 videos ofc its the koga vids that went viral, did not attract new club members though sadly. recently their new first year yagi has been helping out w tiktok production though since hes the most tech literate in the club. asahina another new first year wants to make more tiktoks with kagami while kagami does not.
nigou however has a really popular official tiktok and instagram which is managed by kuroko and comanaged by izuki (who also has the password to the tiktok account) its just typical puppy stuff, vids of kuroko walking nigou, nigou playing, nigou napping, puppy challenges, trying new products ect. once they got sponsored to try a new puppy food product and izuki had to figure out whether it counted as personal finances for kuroko or ought to be club funds since nigou is arguably a part of the club. they split it in half
izuki manages his dog's tiktok for his mom and is putting being a social media manager in his portfolio for university applications. it's actually quite successful but totally not because the owners are pretty or anything. also pet accounts are the only time it's socially acceptable to make a lot of bad puns so for once their familial quirk has been a boon rather than a bane.
koga and mitobe are trying to start a vlogging tiktok account. they document their friend dates and edit it extensively. it hasn't really blown up yet but everyone agrees that the production quality is really good and it's really cute.
KAIJOU: kise has like a company verified tiktok that hes legally supposed to use to promote anything he does and his manager said he can put dance covers on there if he "really has to" (with company permission) but kise doesn't really care (its very troublesome and his manager sometimes doesnt reply quickly) so he uses the kaijou boys basketball club official tiktok instead. also he only films tiktoks AFTER practice hes very dedicated to being the ace ok. it does mean hes always sweaty and like it drives the fangirls crazy.
technically only the captain and other like committee members are supposed to have the password to their social media accounts BUT kise kind of convinced hayakawa to give him the password since hes always hayakawa's tiktok buddy. nakamura edits the tiktoks for them but hes usually also in them (as a bg guy or like dancing)
kasamastsu doesnt understand tiktok so kise had to explain it to him after moriyama got sidetracked during his explanation and started talking about e-dating, cute filters, trends and his fyp. kobori is a casual tiktok user but does not film videos unless moriyama does (or like he has a rlly important thing he wants to memorialise) moriyama is unaware he is participating in a lot of gay tiktok trends
TOUOU: tbh i cant really imagine anyone in touou being a tiktoker. aomine is like asleep 80% of his life tiktok would ruin him permanently. like destroy his attention span and worsen his mental illness. he does have one anyways though to watch xmm thirst traps. somehow there are men on his fyp. he ended up watching a lot of basketball tiktoks and kind of getting annoyed at really bad ones so sometimes he'll send them to momoi out of the blue and theyll point out the bad technique tgt. momoi has a tiktok because of people urging her to get one but she does not make public videos. sometimes she'll film really pretty videos when she goes out with her friends (mostly the bball guys and other managers but it includes other girls and guys too... usually school nerds but thats a hc of mine) but they never go public. she thinks the filters r really cute and will do tiktok challenges w kise when he asks her so she got mistaken for his gf or smth once which was absolutely mortifying. sakurai has a tiktok to watch his favourite artists n like thats it i guess. he doesnt like tiktok fame either but does try to check out cool things.
imayoshi has a tiktok in a semi ironic way where he partakes in tiktok trends but in a very silly jokey way and like... i think kasamatsu shows up on his account more often than on his own. its basically the unofficial strky account cuz he gets everyone to do silly cutesy trends with him and it is good team bonding!!!! imayoshi doesnt really watch many tiktoks though
SHUTOKU: miyaji is a tiktok miyumiyu akgae. he REFUSES to make it public but he makes dance covers to all of her parts whenever knb akb48 releases a new song. only yuuya knows about it but he has been threatened (with brotherly love) into silence. he is like anonymous and goes by some username like myumyu_kiyo348 and is a semi popular stan in the fandom. once takao trolled him (anonymously on his sisters acc) and got mass reported by miyaji. thinks tiktok dances are pretty good workout alternatives sometimes but claims publicly that he doesnt take it that seriously. he taught imayoshi how to do a miyumiyu dance (had to be bribed extensively) which imayoshi then did while substituting one of their universities' dance club members. miyaji thinks he couldve done a better job tbh.
one of takao's future careers is as shotaro from nct. he claims to be a casual tiktoker with no brain rot but hes VERY ENTHUSIASTIC about being a tiktoker and over the course of a year has amassed like 20 thousand followers which he finds HILARIOUS. takao will watch anything funny but personally is a kpop stan so he does dance covers (and tries to mostly unsuccessfully egg midorima into dancing with him) for like exo and shinee and twice. also his sister features frequently on his account. his and sisters vids tend to go semi viral in their schools here and there
ootsubo has an account on his sisters urging but he watches mostly craft videos and basketball vids. very casual user. no one else really uses tiktok actively and midorima refuses to get an account
YOSEN: (sorry posted early) okamura has a tiktok to try and be trendy BUT LIKE IT HASNT BLOWN UP YET. liu has a douyin so his little brothers can send him funny videos and also he watches breakdancers there and keeps up with the scene through douyin. he got a tiktok to cyberbully okamura.
himuro has a tiktok but he doesn't really get the point of it? like he never uses it except to film exceptionally funny (in his opinion) happenings but he really doesn't care for any tiktok trends. he does think there are a lot of decently funny videos there though. his friends back in la tend to send him tiktoks and he finds that jp and us tiktoks are pretty different always. himuro keeps going viral on other people's tiktoks (such as okamuras which made okamura nearly cry) but he doesn't resally care again. except unless theyre filming him playing basketball in which case u ought to catch his best angle. follows a lot of sports accounts and like his account is mostly random basketball shit, filming people goofing around and such. he filmed a tiktok with kagami once and it was like Very Very Cute. also he keeps being urged to do dances which hes very good at (to his own surprise kind of ?) so he's trying to pay attention a bit more since dance is kind of a good skill to pick up anyways for like flexibility and muscle control and everything
however most surprising i think is that murasakibara has a tiktok and has gone viral like for doing one of those baby cutie poo trends and like just being considered extremely gap moe. he never mentioned it cuz he never mentions even having a tiktok but when himuro was looking for trends to do to help promote the club and stuff (as captain) he chanced upon murasakibara's very viral top viewed baby pookie tiktok and it haunts him. murasakibara very firmly declined doing it again so himuro just reposted the tiktok and has it pinned in their official club tiktok. murasakibara also didnt like that and was VERY unhappy

Making sports into drama (and games?)
An anime analysis from a game design perspective
I admit: I am a great sports anime nerd (and I’ve previously written about the volleyball anime Haikyuu and its fandom) – something that also affects my thinking around game design. What makes sports anime so good – better than watching the sports themselves – is that they usually combine the thrill and achievements of those sports with portrayal of the characters performing them. For me, that adds an invaluable component, since I’m also a character and fictional relationships nerd.
Tumblr media
Ookiku Furikabutte - manga by Higuchi Asa
I’ve categorized the series based on how much of the dramatic content focuses on the game or sport itself and how much it relies on other factors, such as relationships between characters outside of sports. I’ll put my main focus on the series that primarily revolve around the sport. Many are based on manga, but not all. (Whether the series originates as manga or not might actually also affect the content, but it’s not something that I’ll go into in this post.)
Categorizing the shows
Series where the drama is primarily built around the content of the sport:
Ookiku Furikabutte/Big Windup (baseball)
Diamond no Ace/Ace of the Diamond (baseball)
Haikyuu!! (volleyball)
Kuroko no Basket/Kuroko’s Basketball (basketball)
Series where the drama is built around a combination of the sport’s content and other factors:
Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteru/Run with the Wind (running)
Tsurune: Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu (archery)
Yuri!!! on Ice (figure skating)
2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu/2.43: Seiin High School Boys Volleyball Team (volleyball)
Days (soccer)
Re-main (water polo)
Ping Pong the Animation (ping pong)
Series where the drama is primarily built around content outside of the sport:
Free! (swimming)
Hoshiai no Sora/When Stars Align (soft tennis)
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun/Clean Freak Aoyama-kun (soccer)
Cheer Danshi!!/Cheer Boys!! (cheerleading)
Bakuten!!/Backflip!! (rhythmic gymnastics)
Taisou Zamurai / The Gymnastics Samurai (gymnastics)
It’s interesting to see that the focus on sports content could in part be related to which target group the series is aimed towards. It seems like shounen anime (“for boys”) has a larger focus on sports content, whereas shoujo (“for girls”) and seinen (“for grown-ups”) revolve more around relationships.
Could set-based sports with clear positions be easier to dramatize?
Tumblr media
Haikyuu!! - manga by Haruichi Furudate
Both volleyball and baseball translate well into anime format. Volleyball’s set-based play makes it easy to create exciting match portrayals. The game involves turn-taking and players’ positions on the court, including who serves and rotates, creating clear recurring moments of suspense. Since the objective is to win the most sets out of a predetermined number, the outcome of a match isn’t known until the decisive set is played.
The psychological play and complexity
Tumblr media
Ookiku Furikabutte - manga by Higuchi Asa
The complexity of baseball could be seen as a disadvantage due to its difficulty to comprehend, but it’s a double-edged sword, since the complexity also adds excitement. Baseball matches as a whole can become slow, especially if the teams are adept at defense and don’t allow scoring hits. However, in anime, unlike in reality, there’s the possibility to cut or quickly summarize dull parts of the match.
Baseball and volleyball gameplay loops
A Gameplay Loop is a game design term that is used to describe the repetitive activities that a player will take while playing a game. It, essentially, defines what the player DOES while playing. – Engaged Family Gaming
Tumblr media
Diamond no Ace - manga by Terajima Yuuji
In volleyball, a loop begins with one team serving, the ball is then moved between teams by players with various roles (such as setter, wing spiker, blocker, libero) until it hits the floor on one side of the net, determining which team scores a point. This loop is integrated into the larger system by having the first team to reach a certain number of points win the set, while the overall match aims to win the most sets out of (usually) five.
Do shorter loops and turned-based sports make for better drama?
The smallest loops in baseball and volleyball are clear and quite short, allowing for detailed focus on the characters executing decisive actions. The moments before a serve/pitch provide space for inner monologues and character communication. Side changes and innings/sets frame the matches, making it easier for viewers to follow, compared to more fluid sports like basketball or soccer. In turn-based sports, breaks are incorporated into the game’s design. Therefore, I believe that turn-based sports, where players also have very specific roles, are more favorable to portray, than sports where players have more similar roles and the game is more fluid. (Perhaps this is why Kuroko no Basket assigned supernatural abilities to the players, adding an extra dimension to the game that makes it a little more video game-like? Well, it could also be because the creator wanted to make a series about basketball players with supernatural abilities. Personally, I find that supernatural abilities detract from the intrigue of sports, but that’s a matter of taste.)
Tumblr media
Haikyuu!! - manga by Haruichi Furudate
Teams are great for drama
I believe team sports are better suited for storytelling than individual sports. This might be because team sports allow for more complexity in the narrative, as players within a team can be rivals, while also depending on each other to develop and win. Opposing teams are obvious antagonists, but the most interesting events often happen within the teams, between the characters that viewers have come to know, and whose development they are following. Team sports also have recurring tournaments where teams can face the same opponents multiple times, enabling long series that maintain suspense. This exists in individual sports too, but individual competition feels more one-dimensional than team-based competition. So, aside from game (sports) design itself, the setup around teams, tournaments, and matches also influences the narrative. Series centered on individual sports tend to focus more on character relationships outside of competitions, possibly because the sport itself doesn’t provide enough material to build drama solely around it.
Translating sports into drama - and games!
When translating sports into drama, there are factors that can both facilitate and complicate the dramatic buildup. If the focus is on the game itself, it’s advantageous if the game has a high level of complexity, clear/short loops, and specific roles, preferably with inherent conflicts. Among the sports I’ve seen depicted, I would say that baseball has the greatest potential to create compelling drama. However, with that said, the storyteller’s skill will likely have a bigger impact on the story than the design of the sport itself.
I’ve based this analysis on anime series, and they have their aesthetics, structures and way of portraying things. I’m very curious as to whether the components of a great sports anime – sports/game content together with character development and relationships – could also be made into great games. The content of digital games and anime series are very different, but I think there are still learnings to be made from analysing and also comparing those media forms.
Tumblr media
Please let me know through our social channels which games you have played that include sports mechanics and relationships. I have played Pyre, which I think combine those things well. I also have Roller Drama on my to play-list, but I would like to know of more games that focus on sports and relationships (sports relation games!).
Tumblr media
A last side note: When there was finally an anime about Water Polo – Re-main – the creators missed the opportunity of telling the amazing story on how this sport might have come into fruition – as a water based version of horse polo, called Polo Aquatic, where players rode on barrels hitting a ball with sticks… I mean, that’s something you can’t exclude!

Thank you so much for 160 followers! Here are the Ryonan headcanons, enjoy! ✨
Tumblr media
"Ryonan edition"
Akira Sendoh:
The ace of the Ryonan team. There is definitely more than meets the eye with this young man. I think the reason most of his teammates don't know a lot about him is because although Akira is friendly and approachable, he doesn't like talking about himself.
He likes fishing, which actually surprised me at first. There are times when he looks at the water surface and thinks if there's a mermaid down there giggling every time he fails to catch a fish. Yes, Sendoh has a big imagination. Also I think he is pretty romantic but just likes to keep it for himself.
He and Fukuda have sleepovers. Sometimes other players join in as well but usually is just these two. Akira isn't a fun of horror movies, he gets easily scared. Kicchou knows that so in order to tease him he sometimes chooses to watch a really f uped horror movie. In general Sendoh is a very sweet person that tries his best to stay humble and determined.
Kicchou Fukuda:
First of all let's agree that this baby boy needs love. He is someone who wants to prove himself, he is very skilled but needs a little bit of encouragement. Although he tries to act cool, he actually gets pretty anxious and is worried he might not make it.
When he loses focus during a class, he will doodle on his notebook. He is actually good at sketching but his handwriting isn't the best, especially if he tries to write fast.
He usually wakes up early in the morning to play basketball alone or with friends. When he decides to stay home, he listens to some 80's rap music or binge watch some of his favorite series. I think Fukuda is someone who actually likes talking on the phone, it gives him the opportunity to relax.
Jun Uozumi:
I actually like him a lot, he is so awkward at times. Jun isn't the strict and determined captain of Ryonan we see, not at all times at least. In reality he is a pretty cool and approachable. But not when it comes to girls. Just like Akagi he becomes nervous and starts blushing.
Uozumi is really fond of his team and respects his teammates, especially Sendoh. He trusts him a lot. Although he has to be strict and absolute at times, he doesn't like it. He likes reading but not for too long because he loses focus.
There are times he feels a bit worried about his height. It's handy when it comes to basketball but off the court it's a bit of a trouble. Especially when it comes to buying clothes. That's also one of the reasons he is hesitant to talk to girls, what if they find him intimidating? I believe that Uozumi is a nice person to hang out with, he is just a little misunderstood.
Hiroaki Koshino:
This boy reminds of Kazunari Takao from Kuroko's no Basuke for some reason. I think Koshino gets really anxious and unmotivated at times from trying hard to become a great basketball player. Inside the Ryonan team having someone like Sendoh makes it difficult for the other players.
Koshino loves oversized hoodies, you can't tell me otherwise. They are really comfortable and stylish as well. His friends sometimes make of him about this but he doesn't really care. He prefers wearing athletic clothes the most, mostly because he spends his free time playing basketball or exercising.
I feel like Koshino doesn't like it at all when people touch his hair, not even his friends. He finds it really irritating. He also can't stand arrogant people, they annoy him. He believes that you must stay humble if you want to achieve your goals. Hiroaki is actually very sweet but needs time to feel comfortable around new people.
I hope you liked it! Next one is Kainan! ✨💜

Have you watched Slam Dunk ,,? Or any basketball anime ?
hi hi hi! i read a bit of slam dunk but have yet to finish / watch it... just happened to drop it during a busy time in life lmao. but i promise i will, i've gotten irl pressure to as well 😅
what are your thoughts about it? fave characters or things about the series? i'd love to know! ❤️ i'm gonna call you basketball anon for now lmao but feel free to change your emoji or initials, hehe 🏀
i've tried kuroko's basket and wasn't really able to get into it... i think when it comes to sports anime, i prefer more "realistic" ones like haikyuu and daiya no ace. i felt like in knb they made some teams out to be kind of villains that the mcs have to defeat - but in say haikyuu, there are some sneakier dudes (looking at you, daishou) but at the end of the day they're all just friends who want to play the sport in their own way. the superpower-ish aspect of knb turned me off of it, but the characters at least look fun!
i mostly play volleyball these days, but my main sport is actually basketball! i grew up playing competitively. which i think might be why i don't love knb lol - who knows, maybe i judged it too early 🤷🏻‍♀️ so slam dunk does look more appealing to me!
anyway, there's my lil' rant on basketball and anime and meeeee hahahhh
