@aspecardaweek day four | family | aspec nolofinwëans (demi fingon, alloaro aredhel, & aroace argon)
The sons of Fingolfin were Fingon, who was afterwards King of the Noldor in the north of the world, and Turgon, lord of Gondolin; their sister was Aredhel the White. [...] [Youngest] was Argon, the tallest of the brothers and the most impetuous, [who] perished in the first battle of Fingolfin’s host with the Orcs.

Since you voted Gil-galad as your favourite ace elf headcanon, here's ace Gil-galad for Ace Week!
Tumblr media
I have been putting off on actually settling for a design for him because there's no good way to reconcile my headcanons and still keep his parentage open to interpretation. This design lands him quite squarely in the "son of Fingon" case, though I have not done a proper design for either Orodreth or Finduilas (only a sketch) so I could adapt...
The four and six pointed stars are inspired by Tolkien's design of his heraldic device, though it's on purple here instead of blue in honour of the ace flag.

hi! in the spirit of showing oc love, I was wondering if there's a particular oc you're looking forward to introducing to people in upcoming projects?
I'm tripping over myself to answer this Ask! (Thank you thank you thank you, Ace!)
May I please introduce two?
I've been shy about sharing these because they're not only Silmarillion OCs (I'm still intimidated by the Silm fandom, even though I have many lovely Mutuals from there, you included), they're OC WIVES of Silm Canons. Two of the most popular Silm canons. I'm pretty sure OC creators have been flogged for that.
But since you asked... onward with SotWK AU reveals and spoilers! The stories are tragic because that's the First Age for you!
Velcálë Vanandur
Wife of Maglor and grandmother of Elvenqueen Maereth (wife of Thranduil)
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Zendaya Coleman as Velcálë
Her name means "flame doer" in Quenya.
Velcálë had one child with Maglor, a daughter named Laurinwen, who was born and grew up in Tirion.
She was a Noldorin apprentice who served directly under Vána, and was thus given the prestigious epithet "Vanandur" (Servant of Vána).
She was a great tender of gardens, and her songs could cause plants to immediately flower or bear fruit.
Only out of love and devotion to Maglor did she decide to follow the Fëanorians in Exile, taking their daughter with them.
Velcálë was greatly affected by the violence of her kin and constantly homesick for Valinor. A lover of light and warmth, she suffered in the harsh lands where her family dwelt.
The toll of her heartbreak muted the strength and power she possessed in Valimar to nearly nothing, although she did her best to help sustain their people by cultivating the lands for limited-scale food production.
Because she tried to hold Maglor back from "necessary" violence and constantly made him question his commitment to the Oath, she was disliked by all of her brothers-in-law, except for Maedhros.
Velcálë was eventually slain in the battle of Dagor Bragollach when Himlad fell, leading to a permanent estrangement between Maglor and his daughter, Laurinwen.
Tumblr media
Elemírë
Wife of Glorfindel and twin sister of Elenwë (wife of Turgon)
Tumblr media
SotWK Fancast: Vanessa Kirby as Elemírë
Elemírë had a fierce warrior’s spirit, but violence of any kind was considered unbecoming by her family.
She joined the Exile because she did not want to be separated from her sister Elenwë, a gentle spirit whom she always sought to protect.
She was loved by her childhood friend, Glorfindel. Although she reciprocated his feelings, he was the more passionate and demonstrative one. Elemírë factored in Glorfindel's own decision to (reluctantly) join the Exile.
Elemírë nearly died trying to dive under the Grinding Ice to save her sister, but she was held back by Glorfindel. This embittered her heart towards him. Instead of following Turgon to Vinyamar (and eventually Gondolin), she decided to join Fingon’s people.
Over the course of the decades, she grew into a skilled cavalry rider, and was accepted into the ranks of Fingon. She became devoted to Fingon for personally mentoring and training her.
During the Long Peace, Glorfindel (who had missed and yearned for Elemírë all those years), sought permission from Turgon to leave Gondolin so he could seek her out.
He came to Hithlum reaffirming his love for her and seeking her hand in marriage. Elemírë would not say yes, but could not bring herself to refuse him either. Glorfindel committed to staying for as long as needed to convince her, and this courtship lasted for nearly half a century.
Eventually, Fingon himself encouraged Elemírë to realize and follow her true desires for peace and love. She betrothed herself to Glorfindel and returned to Gondolin with him.
The couple married and bore one child, a son named Ingwil.
As the Lady of the House of the Golden Flower, Elemírë was also one of its fiercest warriors. She fought alongside her husband for the first time in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.
Elemírë died during the Fall of Gondolin, rescuing her son from an attacking fire drake, which she successfully slayed before perishing.

Thank you again for the ask @hobbitwrangler, and for encouraging my foray into the Silm fandom. I hope you (and anyone reading this) enjoy learning about these OC ladies! Maybe with the right amount of courage, time, and motivation, I may someday even write some actual one-shots including them!

Fantasy paperback week (mostly)! What a wonderful, musty week indeed.
This, my friends, is one of my favorite things. It is a set of Ace Books’ unauthorized publications of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy (1965). The story here is tortured (and you can find a fuller accounting on Kirkus Reviews). Basically, Donald A. Wollhiem approached Tolkien about producing an American edition of the books in paperback and was snootily turned down (Tolkien apparently saw paperbacks as “degenerate”). Offended, Wollhiem hunted around and found an apparent loophole in copyright law at the time (I do not pretend to entirely understand this) that had allowed the trilogy to fall into the public domain in the US. He quickly published these books, beating Ballantine’s revised editions to shelves by five months. Tolkien and Ballantine waged a war against Ace in the papers, accusing them of pirating the trilogy — eventually Ace relented, gave Tolkien royalties and let their (still popular editions) go out of print.
The cover art is by Jack Gaughan, who was featured on many Ace books. I feel like I know him primarily through covers for Jack Vance novels, but he has a distinct sort of mid-century medieval style I really enjoy. I love these covers, with their bright colors. They actually reflect the content of the books better than the covers on the Ballantine editions — Barbara Remington’s strange triptych evokes some of the books, but because of the Ace edition, she didn’t have time to read the books before she commenced painting.

Fourth Age headcanons (part 1/?):
Aragorn and Arwen's children: Eldarion, Tindómiel and Tinwërínel, Eldalótë
Tumblr media
About the picture: Eldarion is wearing the ring of Barahir as well as the Elessar. Tindómiel favours dark colours, especially the royal colours of Gondor, and a few pieces of jewellery. Tiwërínel prefers a lighter and brighter palette for her clothes, and most of her wardrobe is inspired by Elvish fashion. Eldalótë wears bright colours and Elvish cut gowns, and she prefers pearl jewelery.
Eldarion always looks grave and thoughtful (he’s got his dad’s resting bitch face) but is actually very kind and optimistic. He makes for a good king in times of peace, close to his people and always ready to improve their life conditions. One of his chief missions is to expand the school system his mother established even to the most remote parts of the kingdom and founding affordable universities, the most famed being led by his sister. He is very fond of the sea, and spends as much of his time as he can in the coastal regions of his kingdom. He meets his wife, Medliniel, in Dol-Amroth, and they have a daughter, Míriel, who succeeds him on the throne.
Tindómiel and Tinwërínel are twins, born four years after Eldarion.
Tindómiel is stern and studious, preferring the company of old books to people. She is fiercely protective of her family and, much to the amusement of her parents inherited many of Elrond's mannerisms, notably his Disappointed GlareTM. Famed lore mistress, Tindómiel is the Lady of Isengard and dedicates her life to cataloguing and archiving all the things Saruman and his predecessors left in the tower of Orthanc, turning it in a high place of knowledge and studies in the Reunited Kingdom. She remains unwed but considers all the women of Gondor, Arnor, Rohan and beyond she taught as her daughters. She names one of her great-nieces as her heiress, declaring that the fiefdom of Isengard should always be ruled by a woman since men brought only ruin there. The Ladies of Isengard become known across all of Middle-Earth for their wisdom and knowledge.
Tinwërínel is as extroverted as her twin is introverted and she thrives in the political landscape of the Reunited Kingdom. Clever politician and ruthless diplomat, or vice versa depending of the situation, she is one of her father's most trusted advisors and he names her Stewardess of Arnor. Tinwërínel has to abdicate the function when she marries Elboron and becomes Princess of Ithilien, but she remains an active politician even as she raises three sons, and is part of her brother's council. She remains widowed at the age of 110 and returns to Annúminas where she is Chief Advisor of the Steward of Arnor until her death, several decades later.
Eldalótë, born seven years after the twins, is the splitting image of her mother, with her father’s love for wild places and his gift for healing. She is more than happy to be the youngest of the family, as it allows her to travel and explore without any care for politics. When in Gondor, Eldalótë spends most of her time studying the arts of healing, be it in Minas Tirith or beside Éowyn. It is during one of her stays in Ithilien that she meets Elfwine of Rohan, and they quickly start a secret courtship. They wed the year after she comes of age, making her queen of Rohan much to her dismay and her family’s amusement. Despite her initial reluctance, Eldalótë settles well enough in her role and dedicates much of her rule to building Houses of Healing in Edoras. She outlives her husband and, once their son is secure in his rule, Eldalótë leaves Rohan and divides her time between Minas Tirith, Orthanc and Annúminas. She is remembered in Rohan for her great kindess and constant cheerfulness.
About Eldarion's daughter under the cut:
King Eldarion of the House Telcontar, second king of the Reunited Kingdom, his wife Medliniel and their only daughter Míriel
Tumblr media
About the picture: Eldarion didn't change his style much as he appears here in his regalia. Míriel is wearing her formal court attire, icluding the ring of Barahir and the Elessar. The cut of her sleeves is a nod to her Elven ancestry while imitating a cape at the same time, which gives her more freedom of movement than wearing an actual cape. Medliniel comes from lesser nobility and she is more comfortable wearing simpler clothes (compared to her husband and daughter) and favours blue, the colour od Dol Amroth, over red and black.
CW mentions of miscarriage
Eldarion meets Medliniel in Dol-Amroth and it is love at first sight for the both of them. They wed after the shortest courtship and engagement possible without seeming entirely inappropriate and are expecting a child within the year. Unfortunately, Medliniel looses the baby and it takes them a long time before trying again. Medliniel miscarries twice more before finally giving birth to a healthy little girl they name Míriel. Eldarion and Medliniel commonly agree not to try for more children because another pregnancy could be fatal to her. They cherish their daughter and make sure she gets the best possible education as a future queen.
Míriel spends most of her childhood with her parents doting on her, but she also makes long stays by her various aunts and cousins to perfection her education. She studies history and ancient lore in Orthanc under the strict instruction of Tindómiel, rides wildly across Rohan with Eldalótë and learns the subtlety of both ruling and motherhood by her aunt Tinwërinel’s side. Strong minded and free hearted, Míriel has three children without ever marrying, though she openly lives with her lover and make no secret he is the father of her children.
When she becomes the first Ruling Queen of the Reunited Kingdom, Míriel continues many of the social refoms started by her father and grandfather. Her greatest accomplishent is to see Osgiliath fully restored to its former glory and, by the end of her reign, she even moves the capital from Minas Tirith back to Osgiliath. Her reign is highly controversed by the nobility but she is well loved by her people, especially the women. In fact, Míriel leads a great reform of the laws revolving around family, marriage and inheritance, and made sure women had equal rights over their children with their husband. She also funded a network of shelters for abused women and children.
And I'll stop here before turning this massive post into a fully fleshed fanfiction.
Next post of this series will be about Tinwërínel and Eldalótë's lives and their children.

Hi! I'm looking for somewhat specific fanfiction to scratch an itch and I was wondering if maybe you've come across something like this and could share recommendations?
Do you know of any Maedhros&Fingon friendship fics where Maedhros is at least strongly ace-coded? Could be set in Tirion, could be in Beleriand, literally anything will do.
Thank you in advance!
- from @light-of-the-trees
(sorry for the very late response)
Yes, definitely! I've written a number of ace Maedhros stories myself, and there's a few others I know of too. Because I'm me, many/most of these include Russingon, both romantic and queerplatonic, so take your pick of the flavor of their relationship you prefer :)
~
My ace!Mae fics:
New Questions - pre-QP Maedhros + Fingon; Valinor era; aroace Maedhros, aroace Fingon; 629 words; rated G
Copper and Emerald - queerplatonic Maedhros + Fingon; Valinor era/happy AU; aroace Maedhros, aroace Fingon; 2k words; rated G; has a sequel!
your love like a blanket, keeping me warm - queerplatonic Maedhros + Fingon; Modern AU; aroace Maedhros, aspec questioning Fingon; 6.2k words; rated T; has an E-rated sequel
Valid - romantic Maedhros/Fingon; Modern AU (different from above); caedsexual Maedhros, gay Fingon; 2.6k words; rated T; deals with some heavy topics, mind the tags/notes; part of a larger modern AU that doesn't focus so much on Mae's ace-spec identity
a small price to pay for your smile - queerplatonic and romantic Maedhros and Fingon (it's complicated); Beleriand era; caedsexual Maedhros, demisexual Fingon; 3.9k; rated M; again deals with heavy topics
Other folks' ace!Mae fics:
an aroace Maedhros poem by @daegred-winsterhand
and tomorrow's out of sight by asterisq; queerplatonic Maedhros + Fingon; Beleriand era; 6.5k words
Peculiar Spiritual Connection by @zealouswerewolfcollector; queerplatonic Maedhros + Fingon; post-reembodiment Valinor; 2.1k words; this one is so good and so near and dear to my heart, I adore it and can't recommend it enough!!
They Named It Love by @eccentricmya; one-sided romantic Fingon/Maedhros, friendship; Valinor era; aroace Maedhros; 3k words; Maedhros lets Fingon down easy
Love in Spades by @imakemywings; platonic Maedhros & Fingon, Maedhros & Lalwen; Valinor era; aroace Maedhros; 5.2k words; coming-of-age/acceptance of identity story
~
I'm sure there's more ace!Mae fics out there, so if you've got one or you know of one, please reblog this post with a link!!
Hope this is what you're looking for, @light-of-the-trees!

"DO WhAT??"
Anaire looked at you with a puzzled expression, her lips curving into a barely concealed smile. In the background, Turgon couldn't help but chuckle, a rare display of emotion from the most emotionally constipated Finwean.
Unfazed by your wide-eyed reaction, Anaire repeated herself. "After the feast, the bride and groom continue their binding in the privacy of their room. It's the union of souls and bodies."
"So, sex equals marriage," you blurted out, and you could almost feel your very proper mother-in-law cringing at your words. Anaire nodded curtly.
A cold sense of dread settled in your bones as the implications sank in. Sex. Bodies. Sweat. Gasps. Moans. Unnatural warmth. Skin. Hands. Fingers tracing along exposed backs. Nails scratching against a lover's back. Ruffled sheets. Passion. Pleasure. Disgust.
"Don't humans enjoy it?" Argon's voice interrupted your thoughts as he took a seat beside you. "It's an act that pleases men more than the Eldar. I've heard it happens more frequently for you."
You didn't take his words to heart. Instead, you silently thanked the heavens that Fingon wasn't here to witness this conversation. Your beloved would have relished in the opportunity to tease you endlessly about it.
"Um," you cleared your dry throat, realizing it had been ages since you'd discussed this topic with anyone. Three pairs of identical eyes stared back at you. Both Turgon and Argon shared Anaire's features, while your beloved resembled his father. "Well, most humans do enjoy it... it can be quite wonderful," you stammered, trying to push out the memories of awkward encounters. "But there are some who don't. Some don't care for it, while others are repulsed by it."
It had been expected of you. The world asked for a price to be loved. A friendly smile, a flirty banter, or a romantic date were debts that you were expected to repay. Love needed to be proved with bodies just the offering of heart and soul was never enough.
The atmosphere in the lively courtyard grew heavy with silence, a silence that had become all too familiar to you over the years. In response, you did what came naturally to you: you let out an awkward burst of laughter and forced a smile onto your face, trying to project an air of ease.
"I guess I'm one of those malfunctioning ones," you quipped, hoping to lighten the mood. However, your attempt at humor fell flat, and the somber mood persisted.
"I mean, I've never really tried... I could give it a shot. I'm sure it would be fine with Fingon," you continued, now finding yourself rambling about sex with your beloved in front of his family. "I won't hate it. Maybe I've been wrong all along, and-"
"You don't have to marry anyone, nesa," Argon suddenly enveloped you in a warm embrace. "You don't have to do anything for the sake of my hanno or anyone else." Argon, an elf who was decades older than you, insisted on calling you "nesa."
For the first time in the morning, the smile that finds itself on your face is followed by joy. You hug your brother-in-law back. Even the freezing depths of Helcaraxe had failed to taint his spirit.
You playfully nudged Argon with your elbow, a mischievous glint in your eye. "Now, Argon, I'm quite certain none of us would be adequately prepared to endure your hanno's incessant whining if he ever discovered our little impromptu alliance."
Both of you burst into laughter at the thought of Fingon's reaction. The image of him throwing a tantrum over the exclusive rights to hugs and cuddles was both amusing and endearing.
"I can already picture it," you said, trying to stifle your laughter. "He'd be all dramatic, claiming his territory, and insisting that no one else is allowed to cuddle with his human."
Argon wiped away a tear of laughter from the corner of his eye. "Well, then, it's settled. Our secret alliance shall remain a closely guarded secret. For the sake of peace in the family."
