The problem with the handling of Ed's season 2 arc on ofmd is that it sets up the cycle of abuse so well. Demonstrates the way it destroys both Ed and his victims in the first two episodes so well. Shows the ways the trauma can keep destroying people and their relationships in episodes 2-4 (Lucius, Izzy, Jim, etc.). And then just...shames Lucius for trying to open up and shames him for being traumatized and makes fun of him for trying to talk about what happened to him. Makes Izzy apologize to his abuser for one comment he made what is implied to be months ago after the man he is apologizing to CUT OFF HIS TOES AND SHOT HIM IN THE LEG. Doesn't allow Jim (or for that matter, Archie) to be righteously pissed off for longer than episode 4. And then has the audacity to say that Ed making a "Youtuber apology" and using the loot that he blackmailed/threatened/forced the crew to steal in the first place to buy them party decorations somehow...makes up for everything he did?
Like, am I missing a part of this arc? Am I missing the part where he reconciled with literally ANYONE but Fang? Am I missing the part where Stede apologized to Lucius for telling him to stop talking when he was telling him about the severe trauma he went through? (Or even, as much as I love him and their relationship, Pete apologizing to Lucius for dismissing his trauma and wanting to move on before Lucius was ready because listening to Lucius' sa/abuse story was uncomfortable?) Am I missing the part where Archie and Jim found a reason to forgive Ed (and don't tell me that the Izzy-the-unicorn helped them forgive Ed- that was about the crew coming together to help IZZY to recover and had jacksquat to do with Ed)?
The set up was brilliant. Episodes 1-3 killed me. Episode 2 was my favorite episode of the show (bar the bit where Stede ran away when Lucius was unloading his trauma, and even THAT could have worked if he apologized later and allowed Lucius to talk). But the lack of payoff makes me feel sick. Because I understand this show is a comedy, but you don't introduce themes like that and give them that kind of ending.

It’s so strange to me when people say Draco was definitely not abused by his parents in canon. It strikes me as a very limited definition of abuse. Draco was spoiled and pampered and babied by his family. That doesn’t preclude the possibility of his having been abused (he certainly doesn’t have a secure attachment with Lucius and we barely see him interact with Narcissa).
Is inviting a mass murderer to live in your home with your teenage son a healthy, uplifting parenting choice, for instance? Is Draco free to live his life in accordance with what makes him happy, or is there the possibility of being cut off and rejected and denied if he does something his parents don’t like? Has he perhaps been living with this possibility for his entire life, since before he can even remember? If Draco wanted to marry a muggleborn or a man or remain childless or unmarried, would he be free to do so without being disowned like his mother’s sister?

sorry but I love the Izzy “dangling my legs over the side of the ship” scene because like. he’s literally right. it DOES serve him right.
Ed was deeply heartbroken but coping healthily until Izzy got in his head & made him feel like all he deserved was destruction. Ed TRUSTED Izzy, and this person who he felt knew him & saw him & cared about him essentially confirming in his view that he doesn’t deserve good things and only has worth as a monster— that being soft was worse for him than being dead— made him feel that he truly was unloveable and shoved him over the edge into the Kraken persona. plus Izzy ASKED him to be violent! he grinned when he cut off his toe! the beginning of s2 is Izzy realizing that a. Ed is not actually happy as Blackbeard and is in fact destroying himself and b. Izzy himself has grown to care for this crew in a way he didn’t realize he had and maybe actually has some human empathy. and doesn’t want them to be brutalized. which I honestly don’t think he had a handle on before it was too late & he’d already set them up for this level of violence. and also clearly he did NOT know Ed in the way he thought he did! he didn’t realize he cared about the crew like that, but he also didn’t think Kraken-Ed would be that intense. he thought that horrible pep talk was what Ed needed to get back to being pre-Stede Blackbeard, not realizing that pre-Stede Blackbeard was a facade Ed was already deeply unhappy and insecure underneath, but also failing to comprehend (or even notice) the extent of Ed’s trauma and lack of self-worth and the fairly obvious (to anyone who actually knew or understood Ed) fact that telling him those things would shatter his very fragile belief that he deserved these tenuous but brave attempts at taking care of himself and trying to become who he wanted to be. Kraken-Ed was not who Izzy thought he would trigger when he gave him the talk, because he didn’t actually know or understand him like he thought he did. & that’s what he’s coming to terms with in s2 and it is a wonderful arc! lots of people have written fantastic metas about Izzy & his motivations and the complexity of his realization that he didn’t know Ed like he though he did & wasn’t close to him like he thought he was so I won’t bother to fully go into that here as interesting as it is. but like.. he asked for violence & he got it. he didn’t have a good handle on his own feelings about the crew/piracy and he evidently had zero handle on Ed’s (he is masterful at suppression but isn’t emotionally intelligent enough to be able to tell Ed is too), and while yeah it was Ed’s trauma and whole brutal career as a pirate and this glimpse at a different future and Stede’s betrayal all coming together to cause Ed’s eventual breakdown, Izzy’s talk is what made him give up and pushed him overboard into the Kraken era. he convinced him he was worthless if he wasn’t a monster, & in doing so unleashed that monster onto himself and the crew. he taunted the shark and lost a leg. I don’t think there’s anything unhealthy about him framing it like that— he isn’t suppressing his feelings about it or pretending it didn’t happen— he’s just processing & accepting the truth of the matter. when Lucius says Blackbeard cut off his leg and Izzy says “a shark did this”, he’s acknowledging it wasn’t really Ed who shot him, but a violent, hopeless, actively suicidal caricature of Blackbeard, a monster Izzy helped create. Izzy isn’t Ed’s victim— they’re an eye for an eye now. and I’m glad he acknowledged it like that

Can't believe I've had to see "the Canyon is taking attention away from POC characters by obsessing over a white man!" with my own eyes as if most Gentlebearders care about POC characters on the show besides Ed.
I'm sure that OFMD fandom has issues with racism, because people are racist, either consciously or unconsciously, but the way some idiots have decided the racism is solely a Canyon issue is just dumb and naive.

I've been trying to figure out how to say it for weeks, but:
The title of the show being "Our Flag Means Death" + Lucius's Line "What if it's not a Death? What if life just begins again?" = The Revenge has always been, and will always be, a safe haven for her crew.
All those aboard are not held to the rules of their lives before, they are not pushed to fulfill expectations or assumptions or pressures from the rest of the world.
They are allowed to sing and dance and laugh and cry and create and love and be every little bit of themselves that they've ever been scared to be within her walls. When they board her deck, when they hoist her flag, when they accept their role as a member of her crew - she carries a promise.
A promise, that under her flag, their lives may begin again anew.
Her Flag Means Death, but a Death only to what was and a Beginning to what could be.

November 1999 - "You're doing it to yourself."
((Content warning: sleep deprivation, hallucination, abusive parent))
((Promptspiration: @whumptober 2023: day 2: Delirium ))
Genre: whump
Romance level: negligible
Angst level: 5/5
Draco's headspace: depressed / passive
((words: ~1000))
------------------------------------
Draco had been staring through the same page of a book on his desk for some time, the words drifting around unsteadily while he didn't even try to comprehend them, when a familiar voice gnawed at the edge of his attention. He raised his head, blinking, trying to pinpoint it.
Just as he resigned himself to giving up and started to drop his head again, there it was, under the sound of the rustling book pages. He could swear he heard Theo calling his name.
"Theo?" He pushed away from the desk and stood stiffly, rubbing his aching shoulder. He wasn't supposed to be here. It was months since Father made them part ways, and he would be furious if he caught him here. But coming back against explicit orders and implicit threats just because he wanted to sounded exactly like something Theo would do. Theo who had shown up at the gate calling to see him despite the Death Eaters in the house. Theo who bartered with him in public over kisses because it made him forget he was ill.
He didn't think he heard an answer, but he had to find him before someone else did and send him away where it was safe.
Outside his door, he paused, listening, but didn't hear him again, so he went for the stairs, figuring he would be downstairs somewhere.
He didn't hear Theo again; he spent a while checking, but there wasn't any sign of him, and eventually he started to wonder what he had actually heard.
It felt too exhausting to go back upstairs immediately, so he ended up staring out the bay window at the garden. There was a young peacock there, scratching at the edge of a flowerbed, shining white in the watery sunlight. He watched it for a while, not thinking anything, but vaguely relaxed.
A shifting in the shadows caught his eye, and he was trying to focus on it when iit suddenly resolved into Nagini — striking out with lightning speed to seize his peacock. "No!" He hit the window like that could stop it.
Then between one blink and the next it was gone. The peacock was looking up at the window in cautious alarm, but there was no snake.
And of course there couldn't be, anyway. Nagini was dead, he'd seen the body and the head spread across the Hogwarts lawn. She was as dead as her master. He knew that.
"What are you doing?"
His shoulders tensed at his father's voice behind him. He wished he had a good answer. "I apologise," he said properly, turning around and looking toward his father's feet.
"That wasn't the question."
He stole a glance back toward the window. Still no undead snake. The peacock was ripping down a flower with its talons now, to try to get the fairy sitting on the top of it. "I thought I saw…" Nothing. He clenched his hands behind his back. "I think something's wrong." He dragged the words out past a mind that didn't want to say them, looking back at his father's face. "I keep seeing things that aren't possible."
His father studied him. "Like what?"
"I thought I saw Nagini going after the peacock. Or heard… somebody… in the house."
"The snake is dead, and no one has been here."
"I know."
His father came closer to look out the window, then looked him over, studying him for a long minute. "How long has it been since you slept?"
"Not that long," he said quietly, but his hard eyes demanded an answer. "I think Friday," he admitted, even more quietly.
"For Merlin's sake." His voice was sneering and his expression impatient. "If you haven't been to bed in five days, of course you're seeing things. You're not ill, you're doing it to yourself."
Draco didn't respond. He didn't have any excuse. He looked into the middle distance, his father's words sinking in without resistance.
The lack of reaction seemed to be even more irritating. "Am I supposed to believe," he snapped, "that you need a nurse to tell you not just to eat, which you've obviously not been doing, but also to sleep now? You are a grown man. Even toddlers know to go to sleep when they're tired. Do you need to be told to use the lavatory too?"
He continued to stare impassively, until his father grabbed his jaw and lifted his face, forcing him to answer the rhetorical question. "No," he said, insides crawling with shame.
"What a positively minimal accomplishment." He threw down his face. "Elf!"
Tolly appeared beside his foot, cringing a look up at him. "Master?"
"Until further notice, Draco's bedtime is ten o'clock. You will put him to sleep at precisely that time, regardless of where he is or what he's doing."
"Don't," Draco pleaded quietly.
Finally getting a reaction gave his voice an edge of satisfaction. "Is that understood?"
"Yes, Master," the elf squeaked promptly. "Tolly will make sure Master Draco sleeps."
"Good. Shall we have her feed you as well?"
"No."
"No? Are you certain it isn't too much responsibility for you?"
"Please."
That display of submission seemed to mollify him. His father didn't respond, but walked away with contempt dripping from his voice. "Grow up."
Tolly vanished and swiftly spirited a tea tray into the window to try to make Draco feel better.
Draco didn't move. He stood there in front of the window, staring at the floor, fighting off every physical reaction he wanted to do. He wanted to mess with his hair, grab his head, clench his fists — he carefully took all of it, all of the energy behind those urges, and pushed it down, down until it was buried and he didn't react at all.

uh doesn't the Eden fan fiction romanticise the relationship between the pairing anyway by dint of shipping a victim with her abuser? Hear me out- just so you know. I'm not saying the writer supports abuse I object to viewing fiction through that lens, what i mean is pairing them together in the story makes their relationship seem better. Don't you think?
No, because shipping isn't inherently romantic/idyllic.
Case in point, Eden!Lumione: the non-platonic aspects of their relationship did not take away its messed up, abusive nature. Frankly, these elements exacerbated the relationship's already potent toxicity — subjecting Hermione to a bigger world of hurt than if she and Lucius had simply remained mere enemies. His words would have cut less into her, too.
The reasons why these two began developing feelings for each other, at the outset? Also far from romantic! Hermione's emotional dependency on him, plus her need for softer behavior from him so she could feel human again (his fault, both cases), set up her Stockholm syndrome.
Lucius? He fell in lust with Hermione because her blood status made her forbidden to him. This was followed by him developing an ever-growing obsession with someone he hungered after, but hated as well.
Yeah. The fic didn't romanticize anything, and that includes the best moments Lucius/Hermione shared together! Those, whilst preferable to him unleashing his fury on her, also remind you of their relationship's continued abusive nature.
