COVID Restrictions

It is not necessary for immunized passengers visiting the UAE to produce a negative RT-PCR test result for COVID-19 at the airport of departure. Those who have not had a vaccination must, however, present a valid negative RT-PCR test result obtained within 48 hours of their arrival or a certificate of recovery from COVID-19 issued within 30 days of their departure, coupled with a QR code, if they have been exposed to the virus.

Rules for international travelers as of February 26, 2022

All international travelers to the United Arab Emirates are subject to the following regulations at the airport of departure.

● Anyone who has received a COVID-19 immunization must provide a vaccination card with a QR code. You are not obliged to provide a COVID-19 RT-PCR test result that is negative at the airport of departure.

● Those who did not receive the COVID-19 vaccination had a positive RT-PCR test result within 48 hours of their arrival that was validly negative, or their COVID-19 test result had been issued within 30 days. If they are already infected with the virus, they can offer one of their recovery certificates with a QR code before departure.

Things to carry while traveling to UAE

● Essential paperwork, including a passport, airline ticket, UAE International Driving License from ITCA and visa

● No drinks are permitted.

● Always keep your doctor's prescription with you if you carry medication.

● Double-check the weight of your luggage and bring a small bag just in case. For additional weight, additional fees can be needed.

Tuscan Transformation: Dubai-based VSHD Design expands its international portfolio with the completion of their first U.S. residential project – The Ranch

VSHD Design, a Dubai-based interior architecture firm specializing in residential and commercial projects, is proud to unveil a luxurious residential design within the Four Seasons Orlando Resort in Florida. With 22,000 sq. ft. this project marks the first residential undertaking of the firm in the United States.

“From the onset, we realized that we were facing numerous challenges with this project,” notes Rania Hamed, interior architect and founder of VSHD Design. “In addition to strict regional building and environmental codes, there were requirements imposed by Four Seasons Resorts to ensure that the residence blended stylistically with its neighboring properties.”

A modern Tuscan approach In approaching the external Tuscan theme exhibited by homes within the exclusive development, the challenge was to maintain some existing structural elements, while delivering on the client’s vision of a modern home that would be luxurious, yet warm, comfortable, and ideal for entertaining guests. The client envisioned a sort of boutique-style hotel environment that would provide family and friends with privacy and luxurious amenities, even in the absence of its owners. To achieve that challenging balance, Hamed embarked on a mission to modernize the external Tuscan façade, while infusing contemporary luxury into the home’s interior to align with the client’s vision.

While Tuscan architecture in its purest form embraces natural, rustic elements, VSHD Design avoided abundant use of materials such as brick and wrought iron in lieu of a modern interpretation. Gray brick overhangs positioned above the external façade’s windows and passages pay homage to Tuscan influences. Black frames of expansive French windows, certified to hurricane standards, provide contemporary contrasts to the façade’s white walls, culminating in a modern Mediterranean style that adheres to the Four Seasons aesthetic requirements.

To complement the structural design, VSHD Design developed all of the home’s outdoor spaces, beginning with its swimming pool. European limestone tiles, stylistic planters, and luxurious sunbeds from the Italian design house, Gervasoni, provide the exterior spaces with an authentic Mediterranean look and feel.

Seamless transitions While the exterior exudes modern interpretations of mandated styles and standards, VSHD Design approached the interior of the house as somewhat of a blank canvas. Working with a timber structure, as opposed to concrete columns and beams, was a new experience, however, Hamed found inspiration in the challenge.

“I saw beauty in some of the original structural elements and I wanted to maintain as many of them as possible,” she explains. “I decided to leave some of the exposed beams intact, as opposed to hiding them behind a layer of gypsum.”

Exposed wooden beams reflecting the original structure’s integrity were maintained, with layers of dark stain and black metal trim added to provide a more industrial feel. Hamed also focused on ensuring seamless continuity between the home’s interior and exterior spaces. Upon entering the house, Carrara marble flooring carries the influences inward, where Tuscan-style arches define the separation of the home’s interior spaces, reinforced by clean, modern, and slightly protruding architraves. The architraves, composed of black matte stained oak, contrast with the interior’s white walls and light gray marble flooring, providing the home’s public areas with a very contemporary look and feel. In living spaces designed for more intimate experiences, Carrara marble flooring gives way to hardwood floors.

“Marble can have a bit of a cold feel to it, particularly when framed by white ceilings and walls,” explains Hamed. “We created a transition to hardwood floors to provide certain spaces, like the living room and the study, with a much warmer ambiance.”

Boutique-style accommodations The main floor houses the master bedroom, highlighted by a luxurious contemporary décor and direct access to the adjacent pool area and outdoor shower, designed as part of VSHD’s vision of an indoor/outdoor lifestyle. The master bedroom’s spa-inspired adjoining spaces include a freestanding bathtub as the centerpiece of a spacious bathroom that also features an individual toilet and shower cubicles. The bathtub is flanked by a wall of floor-to-ceiling French windows on one side and dual washbasins with custom-designed mirrors on the other. Completing the spa-like theme, a small spiral staircase leads to an upper-level gym area featuring a steam room and waterjet shower.

The spa-like feel and amenities extend to the home’s 6 upper-level guest suites, half of which offer private external access for guest stays while the owners are away. Each self-sufficient guest suite features a unique decorative style and is equipped with a mini kitchen, a small pantry, and a spa-inspired bathroom.

“The client’s brief focused on a concept where each room should have a completely different, yet thoroughly modern theme,” explains Hamed. “We incorporated Chinese, Spanish, and multiple other influences in order to provide each suite with its own distinct character and mood.”

The client’s vision of a boutique-style hotel extends to the home’s main dining room, inspired by Italian architect Ettore Sottsass. A ‘modern-retro’ black and white console from Italy contrasts against a wall panel of gold leaf wallpaper, bordered by marble. The panel’s adjacent walls are characterized by ribbed white paneling with a stained wood base, while a cloud lighting fixture from New York’s Apparatus Studio provides adds a celestial touch to the room.

Pièce de résistance In order to tie the interior spaces together, VSHD Design embarked on an ambitious plan to develop a new patio space at the center of the house to create stimulating visual links between multiple areas of the house. To separate the pool area from the patio, and to connect the master bedroom to the living spaces, the design team built an enclosed lanai with four expansive French windows on each side, which infuse the passage with natural light. The abundantly lit corridor is lined with wicker chairs, creating a fabulous reading room with the feel of an open space courtesy of pool views to the left, and patio views and greenery to the right. At the end of the passageway, a staircase to the left ascends to the second level of the home alongside floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook the patio and offer views of the lanai and other external spaces.

“By blending traditional elements with a modern contemporary mix, we succeeded in achieving a contrast that works well,” notes Rania Hamed. “We didn’t want that contrast to be too soft, so the use of black and white, with Carrera marble flooring, provides the home with a strong modern-vintage look.”

Traveling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi on Emirates Air

Traveling from Dubai to Abu Dhabi when arriving from Houston IAH - assuming that Abu Dhabi is your final destination upon flying in - is a bit cumbersome. Once the flight lands at 7.35p, you wait for about 20-30 minutes for the baggage at the Dubai DXB airport and head over to Customs. If you look remotely Indian and have a cart full of baggage and try to go through the Green channel - nothing to declare - nice try. The security officer will direct you towards the scanner for contraband or items that you ought to declare.

Standards questions - how long are you staying, the purpose of the trip, where are you headed and, the proverbial, do you have any medicine? In childhood, someone may have shared with you the wisdom that “honesty is the best policy” and this would be the ideal time to practice it. I mean think about it, the scanner shows the contents of your bags with some things color-coded that stick out like a sore thumb. If you do have meds, be sure to have the prescription to back it up. Best to have the meds in the original pharmacy bottle with the label in your name on it. Just saying…

So, by the time you exit the Customs area, say it is 8.30p or so. Head upstairs to the food court - as of this writing on February 8, 2020, the downstairs food court is undergoing repairs or renovations. Grab a bite to eat, take your time. The Emirates courtesy or complimentary bus to Abu Dhabi doesn’t leave till 11p. Now, here is the catch, you must or should have booked the ticket to Abu Dhabi from Houston to include the bus service. No extra charge but, I wouldn’t take a chance of hoping to hop on the bus once you land in Abu Dhabi. There are only five-time slots for when the bus leaves from Dubai. And, an interesting twist to this Emirates Air complimentary bus service is that it is only for folks traveling on economy class. Huh? For a change, I feel privileged :)

Now, here comes the less than desirable part. GOOD LUCK on figuring out how to find the bus. Zero signage, zero instructions. Follow the sign at the Dubai arrival terminal for buses, metro, public transportation, etc., on the SECOND floor. Go through the car park building. Upon exiting the building, turn left and you will see a bus parked there. If it weren’t for the gentlemen manging the pedestrian crossing helping me out by telling me how to get there, it would have been a long walkabout with my luggage cart. Once you get to the bus, don’t expect any action till about 20 minutes prior to departure when the bus driver will arrive and load the luggage in the belly of the bus. Then, another gentleman will arrive and ask for your boarding pass (hopefully, you didn’t toss it after clearing Customs!) to verify that you are booked to travel to Abu Dhabi.

It takes a good two hours, perhaps a bit over to get you to downtown Abu Dhabi. Plenty of taxis available at 1a to take you to your destination. The bus ride is comfortable and chances are you are going to doze off. Emirates could surely do a better job at a minimum of two things:

Enquire and inform the Customers traveling to Dubai if they are planning on going to Abu Dhabi

BETTER SIGNAGE or instructions on how to find the bus!

BTW, there is no private shuttle service between the two cities from the airport similar to shuttle minivans found in the US where for a reasonable price you share a ride with others. Nor is there a train service between the two cities. Word is that the train service is a work in progress as part of the nationwide UAE railway network. That would be cool!

Which countries can I travel to if I’m not vaccinated?

Many countries across the world have introduced regulations which permit entry only to fully vaccinated travellers.

However, some Britons have chosen not to accept the vaccine, while many younger people are still awaiting their second dose.

According to government data, around 81 per cent of over-16s have received two vaccines, rising to 89 per cent for a single jab.

A number of European countries have said that unvaccinated travellers from the UK will be welcome, provided (in most cases) that they can show a negative PCR test result.

It’s worth remembering, however, that unvaccinated travellers returning to the UK from amber or red list countries will need to quarantine for 10 days upon their return and take tests on day two and day eight.

However, new travel rules set to take effect from 4 October will change this requirement.

On 17 September, the Department for Transport (DfT) announced that from 4 October, the three traffic light lists will be scrapped, leaving just the red list and one other list of “safe for travel” destinations, comprised of the merged green and amber lists.

From 4am on 22 September, eight countries will also move from the current red list to the amber list, meaning they’ll go on to join the new “safe” or “ROW” (rest of the world) list from 4 October.

From 4 October, fully vaccinated travellers returning to the UK from these ROW destinations will no longer have to carry out a pre-departure test before returning to the UK – though this rule remains in place until then.

Fully vaccinated travellers will still have to do a post-arrival PCR test within two days of entering the country, until “late October”, when cheaper lateral flow tests will be allowed.

However, travellers who have not had both vaccine doses will have to self-isolate for 10 days even when coming from the countries on this new “safe” list – taking a day two and day eight PCR test. Those in England can take an extra ‘test to release’ PCR on day five to end quarantine early.

Unvaccinated travellers will still have to take a pre-departure test, too, before travelling into the UK.

The changes will initially only apply to arrivals into England. The devolved parliaments of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are able to set their own rules.

Here are the places where you can travel without a jab.

Which countries can I travel to without being vaccinated?

Spain

The UK’s favourite holiday destination is welcoming British holidaymakers who can provide a negative PCR test issued within 48 hours of arrival.

As an amber list country, however, unvaccinated travellers returning to the UK will need to quarantine for 10 days upon their return and take tests on day two and day eight.

This includes the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera) and the Canaries.

Madeira

While the Portuguese mainland is off the cards for unvaccinated travellers (unless you fancy 14 days of quarantine upon arrival), Madeira isn’t. The diminutive island off the northwest coast of Africa requires visitors to present a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival and complete and submit a traveller questionnaire before departure.

Unvaccinated visitors to mainland Portugal still need to quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

Croatia

Unvaccinated travellers to Croatia can enter the country with proof of either a negative COVID-19 antigen test, issued within 48 hours of arrival, a negative PCR test issued within 72 hours of arrival, or a doctor’s certificate of recovery following a positive test result between 11 and 180 days prior. Passengers arriving without a valid test certificate will be denied entry to Croatia.

Greece

With around a fifth of Greece’s economy dependent on tourism, this popular tourist destination has been keen for UK holidaymakers to return for some time. Unvaccinated travellers can enter this amber list country with proof of a negative PCR test issued within 72 hours of arrival, proof of a negative Covid-19 rapid antigen test from an authorised laboratory, undertaken within the 48 hour period before your arrival, or proof of recovery from Covid-19. The NHS does not provide proof of recovery certificates but Greece will accept evidence of a positive COVID-19 PCR test result taken between 30 to 180 days of your travel dates.

Cyprus

Unvaccinated travellers to Cyprus must provide proof of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours prior to departure, and then take another PCR test upon arrival at Larnaca or Paphos airports, and remain in isolation until the result comes back (this should be no longer than three hours). Travellers staying more than a week must take additional PCR or rapid antigen tests every seven days following arrival, unless able to provide proof of contracted coronavirus in the past six months. Children under 12 are exempt from testing requirements.

Unvaccinated visitors to Northern Cyprus may only avoid official quarantine if they can provide proof of having contracted Covid-19.

Slovenia

Unvaccinated travellers to Slovenia must provide a Digital Passenger Locator Form as well as either a PCR test not older than 72 hours or a rapid antigen test not older than 48 hours – or alternatively, a positive PCR test result that is older than 10 days but more recent than 6 months old, confirming that the traveller has had Covid-19 and not more than 6 months have passed since the first symptoms.

How about further afield?

The UAE

You do not have to be fully vaccinated to visit the UAE, which is now on the UK’s amber list. Unvaccinated arrivals to the Emirates must present evidence of a negative PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. This must be shown at check-in.

Visitors to Dubai will also have to register their details on the COVID-19 DXB App, as well as completing a health declaration form and a quarantine form. Both forms need to be printed, completed and handed over to Dubai Health Authority staff on arrival.

Travellers arriving in Abu Dhabi will also be required to undertake a PCR test upon arrival. Those arriving in Dubai may be required to do the same.

India

At the moment, all regular international flights between the UK and India are officially suspended; however, a limited number of flights continue to operate as part of an air corridor.

Anyone who needs to travel to India is required to upload a negative PCR test result taken in the 72 hours before their scheduled flight time to newdelhiairport.in. They will undergo thermal testing on arrival. Unvaccinated travellers must then quarantine for seven days.

Unvaccinated travellers must quarantine at home for 10 days on their return to the UK, and take a PCR test on days two and eight.

Mexico

Britons travelling to Mexico must complete a health declaration form and scan the QR code it generates upon arrival in the country.

There is currently no requirement to provide a negative PCR test or quarantine on arrival, though many resorts ask guests to complete health questionnaires.

Elsewhere, Brits who have not received two vaccines continue to be barred from Canada. From “early November”, however, UK travellers who have received two jabs will be able to travel to the US again.

Many popular Caribbean holiday destinations have either halted commercial flights with the UK or require visitors to undertake a period of mandatory quarantine at a government facility upon arrival.
