Brennan's said a lot of incredibly articulate, moving, scary and effective things before but I think this very blunt line with all the emotion behind it is more effective. It feels so harrowingly real. (Despite them being stoats.) Plus, he isn't the DM and it isn't Fey Court drama, this is him looking at another PC, his character's mother (played by his dear friend Erika) and saying this. All of this combines makes it such a powerful moment.

like. i'm not blissfully oblivious. i knew well enough to be worried. i knew it was a possibility. from the moment they acquired jack. from the moment i saw how well brendan brisson was performing at left wing as a scorer in the prospect pipeline. when they announced the verbal agreement to extend reilly smith. i knew that these things could end up meaning that max was considered redundant eventually. i had in some way braced myself for this kind of outcome. for the fact that because of the circumstances under which he was acquired, he didn't get the same kind of trade protection and longevity of contract as guys like mark or petro, because he was a rehab project at the time. i knew there would potentially be a really bummer final chapter to what was so far a really happy-ending "misery to joy" turnaround story.

i just figured it might come next year. at the trade deadline if the team was bad. in free agency if they weren't. that maybe they'd reward loyalty and good play and leadership with at least playing out the rest of his deal. that if they really wanted to win a cup next year, all or nothing all-in, then surely max pacioretty, after all he's done for them on and off the ice and all the support they've given him and the way he has never, ever doubted this team and the way his teammates praise his importance constantly, would be a part of that plan, that dream.

the worst part is, i'm almost certain he probably thought the same.

turns out they don't even think he's worth getting an asset back for. they'll throw in dylan coghlan (that poor kid) as a sweetener just to make his cap hit go away.

so much for that shiny golden happy ending, huh.
