to answer your question - i have read…. Some of the bible! just. not all of it.

oh cool, I've read the kids bible to sleep when I was little. but also not all of it ( I got a bit bored with all the new generations) but the illustartions were gorgeous and there were a lot of side notes with historical info and artifacts so it made for good bedtime stories for an 11 year old. I mean it was exciting to find out what the next plague sent by god upon the egyptians will be, etc and see the fear and suffering illustrated on the characters faces made it even more so lively.

Like imma be real there's a couple things coming out this year that I'm really interested in watching and reading but their creators are, uh, very not good people so I'll just be doing it in a way that doesn't give them any money.

Like the reason I've put off re-purchasing my LOTR trilogy in blu-ray to replace my older DVDs is because I specifically don't want to give any money to Harvey Weinstein, who despite being in jail because he is a CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER still gets money off every Peter Jackson trilogy purchase and legitimate stream of those movies.

So I just, uh, rewatch my DVDs given to me as a kid as a Christmas present or utilize, uh, other methods, to watch these movies. They're my favorite movies. I'm just not giving any more of my money to a scumbag than he's already gotten.

#I promise you there is no such thing as unproblematic media #no matter what it is if you go looking deep enough you will find something shitty about pretty much everything #it is better to simply consider what you will do whenever you find that out #than to mistakenly believe that surely THIS media is devoid of problems #for me if I know about it I don't pay money for it #or if I do pay money for it I'm paying a person in front of me a handful of dollars for their used secondhand stuff #and not buying it in a way that gives money to the people I do know about #so I won't rebuy my movies unless I happen to find them secondhand at a yard sale or something #that's ok I've got them on my hard drive

This is a ramble about a post about the Harry Potter books (wishing they were not written)...

I Really Enjoyed the Geodyssey series by Piers Anthony (Isle of Woman, Shame of Man, Hope of Earth, Muse of Art... I never read the last book... Climate of Change)

I read the first 4 books many years ago, and I Really Enjoyed reading these books and the style of writing that spanned across many generations and time periods. I re-read this series many times over the years, and each time I enjoyed the stories and the characters.

Piers Anthony is a prolific author that has written a plethora of books. I have only read the Geodyssey series, and not any of his other works.

And then something happened and the reputation of Piers Anthony changed from 'respected prolific sci-fi and fantasy author' to 'creepy creep'... He was writing too much about panties and female bodies and teenage sexuality and he is no longer popular or respected 😶

These things are confusing and sad.

Many times I have experienced emotional cruelty from others in the form of 'You like/enjoy (random media)? Then you must be the kind of awful/evil/wrong person who supports (inappropriate behaviors of the creator of that media)!'

I imagine that about 98% of Creatives are Normal Humans that will be sometimes good and sometimes bad, but always Humans that are Going Through It, making mistakes and learning, and never perfect... And only about 1% of Creatives are perfectly evil rotten humans, and only about 1% of Creatives are perfectly good kind humans. The individual that consumes media is not responsible for the actions of the media creator. I guarantee that all humans have enjoyed a work of art/music/literature that was created by someone that they would be repulsed by, if they were to know the creative personally. Should this diminish the experience of enjoyment that the individual feels upon consuming the media?

For example... Michaelangelo was secretly queer but openly hatefully homophobic. In person he was bitter, condescending, sadistic, and rude. He did not bathe, and upon his death he had had the same pair of stockings on for So Many Years that it was necessary to scrape them off of his skin with a spatula. Meeting him in person would not be a pleasant experience for most humans... But he gave us David and La Pieta and the Sistine Chapel and So Much More! Should the Beauty of those works be diminished because they were created by an asshole?

And Jared Leto is a bad person and a bad actor, but Mr. Nobody is still an emotionally beautiful and thought provoking film.

There were too many examples, across all media, and through out all time. Should you choose to only consume media that was created by perfect humans, it would be necessary to live bereft of Art.

I perceive Art like this... There is a Collective Consciousness of humanity's ideas and imagination (the noosphere) and Creations are conducted into this realm of reality (born) through the Creatives (conduits). Consider the Michael Sheen quote/acting advice about the characters they portray not being able to exist unless they open themself and channel that out into the world (paraphrasing)... Consider a child being born... Is that child an extension of the parent? Responsible for the behaviors of the parent? Or is it its own entity that should be perceived by its own merits? Creations of Art are the manifestations of ideas and imagination that have been born through the conduit of Creatives... Creations of Art are the Children of Creatives. Should you be repulsed by a beautiful child because its parent is ugly or vulgar?

Have been thinking on this for a day or so... And just wanted to submit these thoughts for your consideration.

It's definitely a. Complicated subject? I agree that people shouldn't be harassed for what they enjoy in media, though. Someone who harasses or belittles others for what they enjoy in media will always be 100x worse than the person that's enjoying the "bad/problematic" media.

I personally could never read the Harry Potter books after what happened with JKR, but I do understand that there's a good amount of people who read the stories *before* the transphobia stuff came out, and to a lot of those people the series means something to them. There is some degree of separating the art from the artist, although it's impossible to do that entirely.

I think it's mostly fine as long as one acknowledges the problems that a work does have, things in the work that are. Prejudiced, for example. Although I do also understand that there's a lot of people that would rather not be. Reminded about Harry Potter, or talked to about it, or it upsets them when there's references to it.

Both of those people—people that are attached to Harry Potter and keep talking about it and making fanwork for it, and people that don't want to talk about it and having it referenced makes them uncomfortable— are valid. As long as nobody's harassing or belittling anyone else. Although, I will note that, while I can't control what anyone decides to do with their money bc it's their money, even the people who are still fans shouldn't buy things that are going to give money to JKR.

I have a three strikes rule when it comes to tumblr where if I don’t like someone’s reblogs three times in a row I just unfollow them.

I feel like people should use this more, specifically on platforms like tiktok, where you have to press not interested to have a good algorithm. But weirdly enough, the two people I’ve unfollowed happen to have both harped on tiktok and it’s content for more than three posts in a row.

It's interesting with content creation that staying in your lane means not immediately jumping views/subs etc, but long term you benefit. But a lot of ccs, particularly the mcyt sphere, desperately want to blow up like others did during the pandemic/quarantine so they engage with public discourse constantly to keep eyes on them and desperately try to remain "unproblematic" to not get cannabalised by their own fanbase. The ccs that did blow up during quarantine engage with this behaviour to try to make up for the natural drop as people returned to their normal lives (with dream etc being a rare exception)

And like obviously an internet creator needs to stay on top of internet stuff to stay relevant, but its genuinely pathetic how everyone and their mom (literally) jumps on a bandwagon and ends up looking stupid

The thing of it is off twitter they're all so painfully unlike and the biggest field of watchers on youtube will always be boys. Dream Team naturally have a leg up by being men and Minecraft content appeals to young and teenage boys. Tommy had an in but fumbled it by trying to do 2014 youtube humor <- he's slightly too young to correctly replicate it. And the rest of them are small female ccs on twitch who are never going to leech any of the twitter audience of the Dream Team because that is largely where their 16-25 and some + women are. We are not going to go watch somebody because they 'took down the dteam' we're going to wash our hands of it all and go watch the vampire diaries or something okay. Like twitter support is one thing. Viewers who show up is another. And that's why you had people vibrating out of their skin mad about Dream's concert. People flying from across the globe for it. mha has a very large fan community, and what makes it a little different than most other anime fandoms is that mha was specifically targeted for a global audience. they did their best to avoid any quirks and cliche tropes of anime that would go over non-japanese' heads. the art style is pretty cartoonish and it's got lots of references to western comics. there's a whole ass movie set in the US. what i'm trying to say is that a large, international fandom was always what they were going for, and it was well received. it was one of those shows that you'd kind of had to watch if you wanted to be in anime spaces back in like 2016-2018. mind you this is when even aot wasn't that popular. and when something is so popular, there's gonna be lot of weird people in the fandom. BECAUSE most of them will be people who have never been in fandom spaces before. the "cringy mha fans" that were the butt of every joke in anime discord were more of than not minors having just been introduced to anime or fandom culture as a whole. there were lots of weird stuff, i admit. but was it ever really that serious? like why couldn't yall just leave those people alone??

another thing people just couldn't stop talking about was how there were way too many ships in the fandom but 1) why is that a bad thing? and 2) of course there were gonna be a lot of ships in a show that introduced TWO WHOLE CLASSROOMS OF TEENAGERS AS THE MAIN CAST who interacted all the time. not to mention all the students from other hero schools, upperclassmen, pro heroes & teachers. there are like a million characters in this show and the more characters the more potential ships -it's fucking common sense. i think what really happened there was that people outside of the fandom looked at the fanmade content and thought the fandom must have been obsessed with ships. when in reality i think the fans were really chill about it. most of them were multishippers, they didn’t mind the other pairings. i understand that for an outsider's eye all the ships and disclose must've looked chaotic but in fandom spaces people know how to filter the content they engage with so there really arent any serious "ship wars" going on anywhere except for maybe instagram comments.

i am not saying all the ships were unproblematic, there were some pretty weird ships going on too, but honestly i thought half of them were jokes? or at least crackships? and if you compared the number of fics those kind of pairings have on ao3 to the more family friendly ones you'd see that there really weren't an actual fanbase for any of those weird ass pairings.

i think the core of mha fandom has never been as chaotic as others thought it was. mha fans were interested in the story, the fights & the character development while casually enjoying ships as well. it wasn't that serious until yall started bullying a bunch of kids online. with the rise of tiktok and the boredom the pandemic caused there were a huge amount of amateur content. i'm not saying i've never seen a mha fan being genuinely cringe. i just think the mature response to those posts would have been leaving the poor kids alone.

yesterday i've seen a youtube video about how awful mha fans are and this guy just showed a clip of a bunch of cosplayers outside of what was probably an anime convention dancing to gangnam style and he was going on and on about how annoying they are. and it made me so angry because where the fuck did these anime fan bourgeoisie snobs come from telling people they can't have fun at FUCKING ANIME CONVENTIONS??? i dont know if you've ever been to one but an anime con is basically the only place that's supposed to be safe to do cringe shit like that. everyone goes to those things in cosplay, some better than others. but last i checked everyone was pretty nice to each other, complimenting each other's costumes, asking to take photos. the cosplays don't have to be good, they don't even have to be complete. a convention is the one place you can show up in a wig you bought off ebay and a costume you finished making the night before. i dont know what yall are on but people go to those events to have fun. not to be filmed and made fun of. and from my personal experience having been in fandom spaces since middle school, someone who dances to gangnam style in a cheap todoroki cosplay is an infinitely nicer person than the stuck-up loser who makes a video complaining about it

To add on the age debate again.

Tbh I think that being uncomfortable with actors ages is pointless because if they are over 18 and doing more adult scenes they can do what they want. I haven’t seen the casting for Nikki but I assume he’s over 18. The problem is when shows like Skins hire 16-17 year olds to do more explicit scenes and make the actors uncomfortable and to the extreme of the 1994 movie with Kristen Dunst at 10 kissing a 30 year old Brad Pitt. Also you didn’t make me feel belittled it’s mainly when other people brush off concerns because ‘it’s in the book’ argument. I would not care if they changed Armand to 19-20 because yes he’s young but legally an adult! Sometimes it’s hard to portray these relationships on screen.

I’m very excited for devil’s minion and it’s probably my favourite pairing in the books. I think that the main concern started for me when I saw a post about Old Man Daniel’s sex life and emphasising Armand being frozen at 17 physically and those comments do feel maybe unsettling? I’m fine with age gap relationships we know that Armand is mentally mature from living over 500 years.

I also think this stems from a tiktok I saw discussing the obsession of young/old porn in Japan and the danger of those barely legal videos. Obviously Anne Rice wasn’t writing the books because she’s some huge creep… She wanted complex characters and relationships but the vampires don’t really have sex in the books the blood stuff is intimacy and companionship. The show is its own entity and having the vampires have sex it kind of changes things and I think that it’s a better idea to age them up slightly just so there’s no real underage problem like you said.

Aging Daniel up was a show thing though, and I personally like it a lot.

But yes, Anne did not write the books to emphasize this... though often a lot of her stance on "underage" bleeds through. Anne Rice wasn't exactly the most unproblematic author, there is a lot that can be said here.

However, the way the show has done it feels very fitting to me. None of them are too young to touch these subjects, and yes... Joseph Potter is older than 18 :)))

A'ight, what is it about Anne Brontë and Tenant of Wildfell Hall? I keep seeing stuff about how Anne is the unproblematic Brontë sister and that's what kept me away from her books lol

*kracks knuckles* All right. So, remember how the Brontë sisters wrote three novels simultaneously? Charlotte wrote The Professor, Emily wrote Wuthering Heights, and Anne wrote Agnes Grey. The two latter got picked up by publishers, but The Professor was rejected, so Charlotte finished up Jane Eyre and sent it to a publisher, who accepted it immediately and had it published before Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey got printed. All three of them wrote under pen names (Charlotte was Currer Bell, Anne was Acton Bell, and Emily was Ellis Bell), because they knew their novels were, say, a little controversial, and that if it was known they were women, their characters would be judged and immediately associated to their works. So needless to say, they were VERY supportive of each other, because they knew no one else would. (Their father was also supportive, but they published their novels without telling him at first but once they did, he was very encouraging, thankfully.)

It's easy to see why Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights would be considered controversial in their day (they still kind of are today given the Discourse(tm), lol). Agnes Grey, while it didn't do as well as JE and WH, was criticized for being a little too... let's say, honest about a governess' day-to-day life, when Anne wrote it drawing from her own experiences as a governess. The thing with Anne is that people find her stuff a little moralizing, but it was in her best interest to present Agnes as virtuous given how she made little secret of how poorly governesses could be treated, since it wasn't that rare they'd be accused of profiting from the families they were employed by, when there were abuse cases more often than not.

Then The Tenant of Wildfell Hall came out, and that's when criticism started to fly. May Sinclair (an early 20th century suffragist) would later write that the scene where Helen (the main character of the novel) slams her door to her husband's face had a reveberation that was heard throughout England. It's the story (in case you don't mind getting spoiled for a 150-year-old book) of a lady who marries a Victorian fuckboy called Huntington, ends up in an abusive household where her only comfort is her son, and once she realizes that her husband is becoming a bad influence on her child, she leaves him and manages to hide in a house that her brother is willing to rent to her, while she tries to earn a small living by painting. And people lost their shit, because according to them, Helen was a bad woman for leaving her husband, even though she did it to, you know, get her son out of a toxic environment. If Charlotte criticized anything about the novel, it's that she thought some aspects of Huntington were depicted too graphically, but they mostly had to do with his alcoholism and his adultery (this is important: those critcisms have nothing to do with Helen, or how Tenant is shade thrown at Charlotte and Emily's works). That might have been because Anne got some inspiration for Huntington from Branwell, their brother, who was also an alcoholic and got fired from his job as a tutor for having an affair with the lady of the house. Charlotte was pretty fed up with Branwell at that point, and while Emily was the one who got along with him best, they had some pretty big fights because she was in no way a pushover (so the belief that Charlotte and Emily idolized Branwell while Anne was the only one who saw through his BS is also, incidentally, BS).

So, why did Charlotte stop Tenant from being re-printed after Anne's death? Simply put, the criticism against it was getting worse, and people were defaming Anne's character because of it. Charlotte had had her own share of troubles with Jane Eyre - she dedicated the second edition to William Makepeace Thackeray (of Vanity Fair and Barry Lyndon fame) because he was her favorite author, without knowing his wife was institutionalized after suffering from severe post-partum depression. And that led, of course, to people speculating that Jane Eyre was semi-autobiographical, and that Charlotte was Thackeray's mistress. (I mean, it *is* semi-autobiographical, but Thackeray had nothing to do with it.) So she was understandably a little on edge, and while she edited Agnes Grey for a reprinting after Anne's death (given there were a lot of spelling mistakes and the like in the first printing), she asked for Tenant to not be reprinted to protect her sister's memory.

So no, Charlotte did not block Tenant from being as well-known as Wuthering Heights or Jane Eyre because she was "jealous", or because she was mad that Anne was "throwing shade" at her and at Emily. She was protecting her sister's reputation, because she wasn't even alive anymore to speak for herself and mount any kind of defense, and that was while Charlotte's own reputation was under fire, after she had lost the two people who had supported her the most - Emily died in 1848, and Anne in 1849. To try to pit these sisters against each other, when two of them died far too young and the surviving one had to pick up the pieces and defend them against public opinion - it is simply distasteful, and it needs to stop.

This may be a bad take, but I think it’s really odd when people who are new to the proship community (especially minors), make it their goal to ship only “problematic” ships. Tbh, it’s probably just bait, but I’m dumb sometimes and can’t tell when it’s an anti making a bait account or someone who’s genuine. Both exist simultaneously after all.

Let me be clear, I don’t care what someone ships. Incest, age gap, abuse, minor x adult, etc. because they aren’t my ships. I don’t get to tell people what they can and cannot like and these ships have the right to exist. But at the same time, I feel like people who only ship “problematic ships” in this community aren’t really having fun with their freedom and are just trying to fit into some odd anti-created view on proship. Like, do y’all really only like “problematic ships”? Are you bait? Are you just trying to fit in and don’t know how? Or are you just genuine? Like, not even one ship that’s technically “unproblematic” or that’s generally seen as “unproblematic” by people? Not a single one? Tbh when I see people only shipping the “problematic” stuff, I feel like they are forcing themselves to. this is basically a crack pair lmao I think they never even interact in canon, but I had this ooold drawing of them that I wanted to redraw and then I had so much fun with it

Basically my thinking behind this was that I think their personalities have a nice contrast. At first I think B'elanna would think Kes is a bit of a pushover, but with time I think Kes would be someone B'ellana could feel safe with because she is so non judgemental, and that would be a good mix with how selfconcious B'elanna is of her klingon heritage and temper, that a lot of other characters give her shit for and neg her even when she is acting perfectly normal tbh. I think they would appreciate each other's work ethics and persistence slash stubborness when it comes to things they believe in. and I think Kes is maybe not written very consistently but I remeber her being very even tempered and I think maybe she could benefit from picking up some of B'elanna expressiveness or “temper’” so to speak. And yeah I think Kes could become someone B'ellana isn't constantly self monitoring and holding back in front of when they are together in fear that she is too much, too aggressive, too klingon, and maybe it could start that it's B'elanna who is helping out in the infirmary not Tom!

Basically their canon boyfriends are often/can be jelous, possesive, negging or controlling, especially and mostly Neelix, I wouldn’t say Tom is ever controlling and he gets pretty good as a husband, but still I didn’t really finish the series being swept up in their relationship so that’s probably why I was like but what if...women loving women? And you know if I was writing fic or could bend time continuum to my will and change the show I wouldn’t want Kes/B’ellana to be pure unproblematic fluff either cuz I do love some drama, but not the realisticly lousy boyfriend kind of drama I guess :”D
