my recent fixation has been the wings of fire book series since ive been rereading it, which i feel is not very related to any of my other interests and so i havent posted much about it. but i literally have “post whatever i want” in my bio so i’m not going to let the whims of an audience stop me any longer

all that to say heres some of my series opinions in the form of tierlists

(not including 3rd arc bc i havent gotten there on my reread and i dont remember it very well)

i need to do a long post on how much i love whiteout. another day

i realy like clay in the first book and if he retained the same level of depth throughout the series he would be in the top tier-- its just that his writing makes him so shallow in the rest of the books it makes me so sad :[ i was listening (audiobook) to hidden kingdom and like. 90% of his lines/actions were about food and the other 10% were about protecting the other dragonets..... i related so much to his anxiety in the first book and his empathy and his ability to see both sides of things... gah. sad.

jambu is also one of my glup shittos. i love his whimsical ass

foeslayer is a hard one for me because she never did anything wrong she's just..... not as present as i wish she was. she's treated as a very vital character with how many large plot points hinge on her, but she doesnt have much agency herself. its stated a lot that she's extremely important to darkstalker but in the legends book we dont see much of them interacting? idk. i like her but she always feels so uninvolved

the 'beat you to death (funny)' tier is just for characters who i like on some level but are also pathetic and worms. out of that tier i like deathbringer the best and mastermind the worst

tier after that are for characters who i have a positive opinion on but not really a strong one. anemone and sora are more complicated, but i do generally like them. i really just feel bad for them if anything. i think i like clearsight more than the other characters in this tier, but she's not in the 'wonderful :D' tier because i dont think she has a very strong personality

the 'conflicting feelings' tier is kind of a trainwreck because it means a lot of things

obviously riptide is the outlier since he hasnt done anything nearly to the degrees of coral, glacier, and albatross-- but i do have conflicting feelings on him. riptide is completely inoffensive, hasn't done anything wrong, i just dont like him because he has no real reason to be in the story. like you could write him out very easily. his only purpose is to be a love interest for tsunami which is like...... gh. dude. she doesnt need one. if she's gonna have a romance it should come naturally. not "wow this seawing is handsome and also he's the first one ive properly met as well as a guy do im in love with him now" like girl do better

coral and glacier both have done bad things and obviously have bad intentions but also.... theyre not the worst. bad but not the worst.

albatross is a victim of emotional abuse and even though that doesnt justify his actions it does explain how they could have been negated

next 3 tiers are self-explanatory. i forgot to put her on there but queen vigilance goes in 'the grime beneath my shoe'

actually no i wanna talk about scarlet and battlewinner: i think the thing that i like about them is their theatrics. they bot have such a huge presence, like a disney villain. whenever i read scarlet dialogue it almost feels poorly written with how over-the-top she is but. no other character talks like that. its just how scarlet is. and i think thats so good. whereas battlewinner's situation conceptually is just cool as hell. i love how she struggles to speak because of the ice in her throat, her rage, the way she's hinted at but her reveal is completely unexpected...... very very good

i was kind of against glorybringer at first for the same reason i dont like tsunami/riptide but honestly it grew on me. their dynamic is so fun

anemome/tamarin is good i just think tamarin could do better if she wanted to. but i understand the "i can fix her" mentality and i do genuinely think tamarin could help anemone

sunny/fatespeaker is kind of a funny concept but also i can totally see it

i genuinely forgot turtlejou was a thing in canon ... it does not make sense to me. who came up with this. in the words of my friend "forced heterosexual on both parts tbh"

i love turtle and peril as friends so so so much if i saw someone romantically shipping them i feel like i could get mad

smolder/thorn is like if glorybringer was bad. mostly just because thorn can do way better than him. smolder and vermilion should kiss each other and bond over being wimp princes who havent actually done anything wrong themselves but bow to tyrant relatives to avoid getting killed

i dont know if this will be an unpopular take but clay and peril is such an awful ship. i like them as friends, i think theyre great as friends, but a romantic relationship between them would be so deeply unhealthy considering their situation. peril would be even more dependent and attached to him than she already is, and clay is not the kind of dragon who has an easy time saying 'no' to things. it would not be a malicious relationship in any way, but it would not be good for them. peril needs to learn how to live for herself, not for the approval of anyone else

UHH NOT ME COMPLETELY FORGETTING TO POST MY NEW FIC ONTO TUMBLR OOPS HA HA

Anyways! here it is! i am really excited for this fic!! i have a lot of plans for this fic, and hopefully i'll actually finish it; i have a bad track record of abandoning multi chap fics, and im hoping this wont end like that ^^; i have high hopes for this fic, and really want it to be my best work, so im gonna be putting my 110% into this lmao

anyways! the first chapter is under the cut, but please feel free to read it on ao3 as well! i have my own skin for this fic, and imo its better to read it that way (i mean, doesnt add anything important, but just more fun, i think). i also wont be putting the future chapters onto tumblr, only on ao3

Prince Peasley

The letter was short and efficient, and it wasn’t anything Luigi didn’t expect as a formal invitation. Luigi had to say, he had never heard of the Woven Hearts Festival, but it wasn’t like he was too familiar with Beanish tradition in the first place. But he was excited to find out, especially since it was a chance to visit Peasley again.

In a different, more personal letter, Peasley had talked about how thrilled he was for the festival. Apparently the kingdom only celebrated it every ten years, so it was a pretty big deal. And with that, it was the first time that Peasley was hosting, instead of the queen. He sounded pretty excited about having that responsibility, and Luigi himself couldn’t wait. While the festival itself was only a week away, Peasley had requested for them to arrive as early as possible, and Luigi wasn’t one to disappoint. Besides, more time to catch up and be in the prince’s presence was something Luigi would enjoy, and if he could be of use to help with preparations, then it would be even greater.

Sadly, Mario couldn’t leave as early. Toadsworth had requested that the cheap cheap problem be dealt with sooner rather than later–which meant that Mario was going to be down in the sewers to deal with the fish that had made a home there. It wouldn’t be more than a few days of work though–maybe even only a few hours if Mario was lucky enough that the problem wasn’t that big, as Toadsworth made it seem.

But he insisted that Luigi go ahead to go down to Beanbean Kingdom. Just because he had to work didn’t mean that Luigi had to wait to see his boyfriend. “I’m sure you’re just dying to have some alone time with him!” Mario had reasoned, and while Luigi did indeed look forward to the idea of seeing Peasley again, it didn’t stop him from his face turning a bright red for Mario to laugh at.

So Luigi, with his packed suitcase, headed off for Beanbean Kingdom. Nervousness as well as excitement swirled in his gut, as the thought of seeing Peasley again, as well as celebrating an obviously important festival, brought a jumbled bunch of emotions into him. It was clear that it was very important to Peasley–and as an extension, the kingdom as a whole–and Luigi wanted it to be sure it was as special of a moment as Peasley seemed to want it to be. But nothing was going to ruin it, of course not; Luigi was determined and confident that it was going to be a completely normal vacation with many exciting moments with the prince. It was going to be fun, and Luigi was going to relax.

The Beanbean International Airport had been bustling with life when Luigi landed. Beanish people and many others flew in, more than likely for the same reason Luigi had. He would’ve been worried about finding a place to stay–with so many visiting, he was sure that hotels everywhere in the kingdom were booked up to the brim–had it not been for his confidence that Peasley would insist that he stays at the castle. The prince would rather be transformed back to Dragohoho than be a less than stellar host. Luigi had doubted that, but Peasley always insisted that it was true.

“I want nothing but the best for you, my love! It is the least you deserve, for everything you have done for me and my kingdom. And if the way I pay you back is through lavish staying conditions, then so be it! Nothing less than best for you, Greenie.”

It still made Luigi’s face burn up when he thought about it.

By the time he had left his terminal, Luigi’s nerves only increased tenfold. Not in an anxiety-inducing way, no, but in an excitement mixed with a healthy amount of restlessness. A whole week and weekend to spend on a vacation sounded wonderful, and Luigi was quite excited for it to start. He hadn’t even left the baggage claim area before he heard shouts over the bustling people.

“Luigi! Over here!” Luigi’s eyes searched through the sea of people, only to land on the prince of the Beanish Kingdom. His smile was bright and lit up the whole building, and his beauty was just as radiant as Luigi remembered. The prince’s outfit was the same as ever, sans his characteristic cape. In its stead was a thick, cream-colored scarf tied around his neck.The smile that grew on Luigi’s face was wide as he waved over the prince.

“Peasley!” he greeted, and was instantly met with a hug. Luigi let out a low chortle as his arms instinctively returned the action, and gave a tight hug back. The prince pressed a kiss onto his cheek.

“I’ve been waiting for so long for your arrival! I have so many things planned for us, and I’m sure you’ll love it.” He pushed himself off of the plumber, but kept steady hands on his shoulders. He looked around the terminal. “And where is your brother?”

“Oh, about that; Mario ended up being dragged into some work before the flight left. But he promised to arrive no later than tomorrow afternoon!”

Peasley tsked. “Well then! I’m afraid we’ll just have to get started without him, won’t we?” A hand trailed down his arm, down into his hand, which Peasley held onto. Luigi responded with his own squeeze of the hand. “I was thinking we first head for some coffee–we have so much to catch up on, don’t we? And what better to do on a cold day than have a warm beverage and some exchanges of stories?”

Peasley took the lead, through the crowds that parted way for the pair like an ocean. The second they stepped out of the airport and into the fresh air, Luigi’s body began to shiver. He knew it would be cold–it was in the middle of winter, after all–but he hadn’t considered wearing any of his warm clothes that he had packed. How Peasley was able to wear his normal, out-of-season clothing and not even flinch when a harsh wind blew against them, Luigi would never know.

On the way, Peasley spoke about the different kinds of festivities he had planned, how excited he was to be planning the whole thing. The Hearts Woven Festival was a big deal in the kingdom, and he wanted it to be the best for his subjects. He talked about all the different plans he had for the festival, all sorts of decorations and games and stalls, all sorts of plans that made Luigi think about the carnivals that the Mushroom Kingdom had on special occasions. The only difference he found was that the whole celebration was over two days; one day was filled with the festivities that Peasley rambled on about, with the next day holding a gala-like party in the castle. They reveal the Harmony Heart, as a symbol of the kingdom’s unity. Determination bled into Peasley’s words, and no doubt was the prince set on creating the best festival that he could. And Luigi didn’t doubt his partner’s abilities—Peasley could do just about anything he set his mind on, and if he wanted this to be the best festival that the kingdom has ever thrown, then Luigi was confident that Peasley could pull it off.

When they entered Castle Town, it only hit Luigi then just how thrilled the rest of the kingdom was over the festival as well. He supposed it made sense–it only came around only every ten years, and was the biggest event, according to Peasley. The Beanish around them all wore grins on their faces, with laughter and cheerfully chatter filling the air. There were ones who were setting up different food stalls, games, and things of the like around, and others who were putting beautiful decorations of pennant flags tied from pole to pole, balloons and streamers everywhere, and artwork being done on the freshly built wooden stalls. None of it was close to being done, no, but Luigi could tell with ease just how much care and work was being put into this.

“We should deal with your luggage first,” Peasley said absentmindedly, more to himself than to Luigi. “We’ll drop it off real quick, and have someone bring it to your room. There’s just so much I want to talk to you about and show you!”

“We have a whole week, Peasley,” Luigi reassured with a smile, “it’s fine if we take it slow.”

“Oh, but so many things to do in only a week, my love! And I don’t want to waste a single second with you.” Peasley continued to lead Luigi, a clear goal and plan in his head. Luigi didn’t mind too much–he enjoyed getting to see how the town was getting ready for the festivities.

The castle matched the town in its decorations almost perfectly. The color scheme was the same–a pattern of gold, white, and red adorned the castle and its town–and lines of pennant flags were tied across from wall to wall. The guards on duty seemed to be in a jollier mood too, even when Peasley requested them to take hold of Luigi’s luggage and find a handmaid to go and put his suitcase into the guest room he’d be staying in.

The pair finally got inside somewhere warm when they entered the Starbeans Café. The warmth of the heaters blasting throughout the building was extremely appreciated by the plumber, and Peasley hummed in glee as he rubbed his hands together.

“It doesn’t seem to be that busy, luckily for us,” Peasley commented. “Do you mind finding us a place to sit while I order our drinks?”

“Alright. Could you get me-”

“A chuckoccino?” Peasley offered a playful smile. “You’re a man of habit, you know.” Luigi couldn’t help the chuckle that slipped through his lips, or the heat that consumed his face. No matter how much he tried to pull his hat down, he couldn’t hide how flustered he was. Why did Peasley always do this to him during the most mundane of situations?

Peasley only laughed again before he walked off. Luigi found a quiet table against one of the walls, with a large-scale window right against it with a great view of the town. The clouds that blanketed the sky blocked out a good deal of the sun’s light, and the dark hue made him wonder if it were ever going to rain. Or would it snow, based on how cold it was? Luigi would’ve definitely preferred the latter.

It didn’t take long for Peasley to return with their drinks. He placed down the mugs gently on the table, and Luigi dragged his own over. The two beverages steamed, ready to burn any mouths that attempted to gulp it down. Luigi blew on the drink, and took the tiniest of sips. He hummed in delight, the warmth of the small amount of liquid already making him content.

“You know, you’ve never told me what the festival is about,” Luigi mentioned. Peasley, who was mid-sip of his drink, gave a small nod.

“Oh yes,” he said, putting down the drink. “I can’t believe I completely forgot to explain it to you! Do you truly not know anything about it?”

“I never heard of it until yesterday, honestly,” he admitted. Luigi felt a bit bad for not being aware of customs and traditions of the Beanish as he should, but he was met with a smile from Peasley.

“Well, I’ll do my best to keep the story short. But, it started a long time ago–a few generations after the kingdom was created with the Beanstar. I told you about that story, didn’t I? How a lonely king wished to create his own kingdom, but everything always went wrong? And then a star came down and blessed his good heart, and his wife with the most beautiful voice in the land?”

“Well…no. But I think maybe we should stick to one story at a time.”

Peasley chuckled. “Yes yes, of course.” He started to trace the rim of the mug with his index finger. “Well, the Beanbean Kingdom was flourishing for a while, and all was well for everyone. But, it was said that outside of the kingdom walls, out in the sea and the fields and mountains, that evil and darkness incarnate existed. They wanted to have the Beanstar for themselves. But they never could get in the kingdom, for the walls were too strong. And so, instead of trying to destroy it with brute strength, the darkness and evil decided to instead slip through the cracks of the walls, and sneak in.

“While the darkness couldn’t be there physically, it started to slowly affect the citizens of the kingdom. It started to take over the kingdom’s people, and took over their souls, infecting them with darkness and evil. The kingdom started to fall apart because of it. The king lost many of his people to it–he even lost one of his sons, and only daughter to it, too. The kingdom was collapsing, but the king stayed true to himself. He did everything in his power that he could to save everyone, and refused to let himself succumb to evil.”

Peasley gave a sad smile as he continued. “And then his wife ended up falling into it. The loving queen, who had always been by his side, was starting to get taken over by it. And the king just couldn’t accept this reality. And from his strong emotions–his need to save her, his grief and determination that came from it, and the goodness and purity of his heart, the Harmony Heart was born.” Peasley paused, for a few seconds, and then hummed as he moved his hand down to drum on the table. “None of the texts that we can find talks explicitly of how though, only that it just…appeared. Odd, but I guess we’ve never really questioned it. It was a miracle afterall, one that saved the Beanbean Kingdom.

“But I suppose that fact doesn’t matter,” Peasley sighed, not letting a single thing get in the way of his story-telling. He then gave a triumphant smile as he continued on. “As I said, the Harmony Heart was created. And with that, the king was able to use that power and rid all of the evil and darkness within the kingdom, and bring light to all! He was able to not only save his wife from it, but all of his subjects as well. The Heart took the king’s heroicness and purity, and was able to spread it all across the land.

“And so every ten years we throw a festival and feast to celebrate not only how we’re still here today, but also that the Heart is what keeps us united and is what keeps that kingdom-falling evil at bay.” Peasley, as though on a final note, took a sip of his drink. “That’s about it, really. I’m sure I’m missing a few details though–the story got a bit…muddled throughout the years, but that’s the gist of it.”

“Wowie…” Luigi hadn’t even known what to say. A long–but apparently short by Peasley’s standards–story, but one of triumph and success. The Mushroom Kingdom had many like it, but the Beanbean's were quite unlike stories he had heard before.

“The festival sounds fun,” Luigi decided on. “A-and, I can’t wait to see what you have planned for it.” Peasley’s smile grew more by those words, and Luigi couldn’t help but reciprocate that grin. Peasley’s eyes shone a brilliant yellow, bright with excitement, and Luigi felt like he could get lost in them for hours on end.

“Oh!” Somehow, Peasley’s excitement grew even more, his voice light with giddiness. “I should show you around Castle Town so you can see how much we’ve gotten done!”

Luigi was sure that he had seen quite a bit just from traveling to the coffee shop. But if it made Peasley happy, then he wouldn’t mind a stroll through the cold, but cheerful, town. Who was Luigi, to dampen his boyfriend’s clear excitement?

He barely got in a nod as an answer before Peasley quickly downed the rest of his drink and got up from this seat. He then stuttered a bit with his actions, and sat back down as Luigi took a slower sip of his own beverage.

“Ah–perhaps I got a little bit too excited,” the prince admitted bashfully. Luigi offered a comforting smile. He could tell how restless Peasley was, but that was understandable. It was obvious how much Peasley cared for this event, and just wanted to show Luigi everything he was working on, and how he was proud of it, and Luigi couldn’t fault him for that.

Peasley, while Luigi worked on his drink, continued to talk about the festivities. He spoke about how the Hearts Woven festival was in fact celebrated over two days–one entirely of a fun festival in Castle Town with music, food, games, anything that could be imagined–and then a ball on the next day, held within the castle–more of an esteemed event, Peasley explained, with it being focused more on the royal family and how they watch over and protect the Harmony Heart. Luigi froze a bit at the mention of a formal ball; he had been to plenty in the Mushroom Kingdom and Sarasaland that he was familiar with the customs of a ball, but any sort of thought of a social affair could make his stomach drop.

But, it would be fine. Luigi knew that it would be fine. Peasley would be there, and Mario had said he would arrive no later by the next day. Besides, Luigi knew how to handle himself in a crowd–he had gotten a lot better at it when compared to the first ball he had to attend, back when Mario saved Princess Peach for the first time from the demonous claws of Bowser. That had been a disaster. But now it would be different, because, even though at times it didn’t seem like it, Luigi had gotten more confident in himself. He could handle himself just fine.

By the time Luigi was finally done with the drink and warming up inside of the shop, he had to brave out into the cold air once more. Once again, Peasley didn’t seem that affected by the freezing air. Just a small adjustment of his scarf, and he continued on, and dragged Luigi further into the depths of Castle Town. Luigi understood how excited Peasley was, he really did, but why couldn’t they go on a tour around the growing festival another day? Preferably when it was warmer?

Luigi suddenly caught on as to why, though. The whole town was hard at work–many of the wooden stalls were still being put together, along with many other mechanics for other, more complicated and bigger pieces of the festival. There were many Beanish who were up on high ladders, all still putting up decorations on the buildings. Heads started to turn, more and more of them, as murmurs grew in the crowd.

“Your Highness!” one squeaked out, rushing over. “Thank goodness you’re here! Tell me: which colors would look best? I want to paint our sign a lovely shade of green, but my husband insists that we go with red. I tell him time and time again that red does not suit the colors of the festival, but of course he thinks he’s the artistic one out of the both of us.”

Ah, that’s right. As a prince, one who was fully in-charge of the event, of course Peasley had to watch over everything, and make sure that every little detail was right. The citizens needed his approval on just about everything, and would need his help, as well. It would also explain why Peasley was so quick to rush into the coffee shop–the second he would be spotted, he would have to start up again with his princely duties, and he was just so excited to spend time with Luigi.

But, Peasley didn’t seem to mind at all. Which didn’t surprise Luigi; Peasley had always been one who was always so happy to help out others around him. And seeing as how it was his subjects who were requesting for his opinions and help, how could he say no?

Luigi got distracted from Peasley and the Beanish’s conversation. There was a shaky ladder in the corner of his eye, and Luigi rushed over to help. He was, afterall, nothing if not helpful. Getting people out of pickles, whether it be others, himself, or his brother, was just something that was second nature to Luigi. Second nature to Mario too, he knew. They just loved to help people out, and whether this was what Peasley had planned to happen or not, Luigi would never oppose helping someone out. The ladder steadied when Luigi was able to get a firm grip on the base of it, keeping it still from any more shaking. The Beanish on top, who was in the middle of tying a pretty bow in golden ribbon, looked down and gave a “hey, thanks!” before focusing back on their work.

As Peasley slowly started to get surrounded by work, trying to advise how the festival should not only function, but look (“no, yellow roses! Not lilies, those are meant strictly for funerals. Why would we want white lilies in the first place? Roses are a much better choice!”). Turned out, he had quite a bit to do. Luckily, Luigi’s presence was just as appreciated; as it turned out, having an extra set of hands was something that many of the townspeople needed (“oh, how lucky we are to have a carpenter here!” He was not a carpenter, but he did know his way around woodworking tools, so Luigi never corrected while he helped out building stands and stalls).

Luigi was also a bit surprised to see how many of them remembered and recognized him. Yeah, he and his brother did save their kingdom, but he just wasn’t used to all of the attention. The questions if he was actually the Luigi that saved them, voices filled with an attempt to keep their enthusiasm hidden, always made Luigi stutter a bit as he nodded yes. The attention was new, but not unwelcomed. He couldn't help but wonder if this was how Mario felt all the time, in the Mushroom Kingdom. If it was, he wasn’t sure how Mario could handle it all the time, or have the energy for it. Just a small con of being the kingdom’s hero, he supposed.

The small looks Peasley sent Luigi never went unnoticed. The smiles that the prince gave were often met with shy ones from Luigi. Small waves exchanged between the two, along with a few words when they were close by, until one or the other was whisked away by a townsperson in need of their help. But of course, the smile Peasley wore never left as he helped–whenever Luigi’s eyes fell back onto the prince, the smile was always graced upon his face.

And, down the line, they did end up doing what Peasley wanted to do in the first place. Luigi got to take in the hard work the Beanish people were putting in for the festival. They were proud of their work, that much was obvious, and Luigi believed rightfully so. The games he got to survey, treats he got to taste-test, and artwork he got to take in were all incredible in their own ways. The effort that the kingdom was putting into the festival was clear; they all deserved to feel pride over their work.

The pair worked well until the evening, with the sun falling behind the mountains. Luigi would say that he was hungry for dinner, but with all of the different savory foods and sweets all given to him–followed by questions if it was too salty, if it needed more sugar in it, if maybe perhaps a maple glaze would work well with it–it was safe to say that his appetite was well taken care of. Although, the only complaint that Luigi had was that even with his gloves on, his hands were starting to freeze. He definitely wasn’t bundled up enough for the cold, and with the moon starting to come up, he knew he would have to get warmer clothes if he wanted to stay outside.

Thankfully though, Peasley seemed to have wrapped up what he was doing. Promises to his people were made, that he would come back in the afternoon to be of more help. It wasn’t until the last person left did Peasley let out a slow exhale, with his shoulders coming down into a more relaxed position. Though his smile never left, it was clear that he was on the edge of exhaustion. The prince was good at hiding it at times, but Luigi had learned his tells well enough to see.

“I believe it’s time for us to head back,” Peasley said. Luigi nodded in agreement, and the two were off towards the castle. “I don’t think the chefs are quite done with it, though–I’ll have to check up on that. But, as you wait, you can decompress in your room.”

“I don’t mind the wait,” Luigi said. “I, uh, got quite a bit of food from the chefs cooking the festival foods. They were a bit filling.” A nervous chuckle followed, but Peasley simply hummed.

“Well, even so my love, I’ll be sure to come by to pick you up for dinner. I’m sure my mother would want to properly see you as well, and getting those formal greetings is often best done over a meal.” Luigi didn’t mind that. The queen was a bit…intimidating, he had to admit, and carrying a conversation with her with the chance to stuff food into his mouth to prevent words and stutters from pouring out seemed ideal. He also hadn’t seen her in quite a bit of time–the last being when he and Mario had to save the Beanstar, and that wasn’t quite a formal or proper time to really discuss anything or have her ask a plethora of questions.

Once they entered the castle, Luigi first noticed the way it buzzed with life. It was clear that many of the staff members were helping out with preparations as well, and weren’t letting anything distract them from their tasks. Diligent guards kept a keen eye out (or, maybe not so diligent, based on how a group of them chattered and a lone one snored away while standing); many maids and butlers walked with a pep in their step, letting Luigi know that it would best if he did his best to stay out of their way.

Peasley led him to his room, where his suitcase had been placed on the otherwise untouched bed. With Peasley bidding a goodbye to let Luigi rest for a short while, Luigi was finally able to get off of his feet. Exhaustion weighed heavier on his shoulders than he had originally thought, Luigi realized as he all but collapsed on the bed. He just couldn’t help it–the room was warm, the bed incredibly soft, and after a tiring day, it was nice to settle into. It was practically inviting him in, and Luigi wasn’t one to say no to comfort.

He wasn’t sure how long he had laid there for. It must’ve only been a few minutes though, and too early for Peasley to come back to alert him of dinner, but nevertheless, there was a knocking at the door. The quick and hurried type, with urgency behind each sound. Confused, Luigi sat up, staring at the door. He only then got up to his feet when another set of raps hit the door, just as fast and alarming as the last set.

Luigi opened the door to reveal a worry-filled Peasley on the other side. There was a smile on his face, more likely to be used as some sort of cushion or reassurance, but it didn’t match his eyes that were filled with fear and concern.

“Peasley? Is something wrong?” A dumb question on his part, he internally chided to himself–of course something was wrong.

“Ah, yes my dear, you see- well-” It wasn’t like Peasley to stutter his words like that. Something big must have definitely happened. His hands were constantly shifting as he tried to gather his words, and Luigi hesitantly went forward to grab one of the prince’s hands. Peasley grabbed onto it, and gave a gentle squeeze as he took in a deep breath. His voice, steady and sure of itself, announced something that made Luigi’s eyes widen.

“The Harmony Heart has gone missing.”

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I'm not thrilled with the new EP and I'm not sure if I like the new concept, even though I know it's used ironically. All it does to me is making me miss their early material, it seemed so artistic and inspired. This - not so much. I'm still going to listen and support, no doubt here, but at the same time hope for their inspiration to come back from war

this is not even their only - or silliest - comeback. like, to this day it still amazes me how well dumdi dumdi did. it was their blandest comeback i can think of. just a silly summer song. senorita hardly delivered anything either, even though I LOVE IT. the fact is, or i think the fact is, they arent always putting up serious themes - be it on concept, message or song style.

its not even about me trusting that soyeon is delivering what she wants to deliver, because i believe that too, but i also believe she delivers it in a perfect balance of what the group NEEDS. lets be real. tomboy was a miracle no one else could have pulled it off. and HOW MANY people were shitting on her unserious, bad rap lyrics. like yes i get it? its not what she did before. but it was what got them where they are. because it is exactly the way it is. so i personally not only trust the process but ive been a nevie since debut and im just here ya know. to enjoy the ride and i have yet to be disappointed. i dont usually expect anything specific from the comebacks, i just want the title track to be something i like to listen to. personally they deliver everytime. i get it if its not your fave cup of tea but also like. not really sure i understand where your thought process is coming from. you are welcome to let me know more though - on anon or not!!!!

Aw, that's cute! I don't really know anything about Once Upon A Time but I like your story so far!

I'm actually gonna go on a separate tangent here but it's still storybook/fantasy related,,,

There's a game called Night of the Full Moon where (depending on the game mode) you play as Little Red Riding Hood. Your best friend is the Little Carpenter, aka Jerry. In the original game, you're trying to discover the secret of the Black Forest and why people are disappearing/turning into monsters/find your Grandma. In the normal ending, you cycle through fighting a Witch, A Priest (those two are working together to kill you because you have magic blood and you're the only one that can purify the corruption they cast), a Werewolf (who keeps insisting he didn't take your grandma and he doesn't want to fight you), and the final boss is the Cursed Werewolf (who initially possesses your Grandmother to kill the Priest, and then tries to get you to join him to kill the Priest's congregation, who are all either cluelessly complicit or malicious). The True Ending involves you discovering Jerry is actually the werewolf (the son of the Cursed Werewolf, but neither of them are aware of it). You have to defeat the corrupted Forest Spirit in order to purify the forest/save everyone. Jerry (who is in love with Red but was always too afraid to tell her) sacrifices himself to protect you from the Forest Spirit's spell, and the story ends with him dying.

The sequel (called The Wishing Night) starts talking about how Red knows Jerry isn't really gone, and she'll stop at nothing to find him. A map is delivered to her (we don't know by who, but I have some guesses) that details a magical cave that's accessible on the night of the full moon. Deep within the cavern is a Wish God. If you can defeat him, he'll grant you a wish. There are two bosses you have to fight; the first is the Wolf Illusion. The illusion uses Jerry's voice and some of his voice lines from the original ('I don't wanna hurt you!' 'Don't push me!' etc) aND ALSO ONE OF THE LINES IS 'Little Red Riding Hood... I-' AND THEN IT FUCKING CUTS AND I KNOW HE WAS GONNA CONFESS BUT THEN HE FUCKING DOESNT AND I SCREECHED A LITTLE THE FIRST TIME I HEARD IT BECAUSE I WASNT EXPECTING IT AND IT HURT MY HEART. AND THEN THERE'S ANOTHER LIKE WHERE HE SAYS 'WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!' AND I BAWL. Anyways once you defeat the Illusion, you learn it was actually the 'Wish God' who was trying to trap you in an illusion to steal your powers. But since you won the fight, he offers you a wish. You wish to see what happened to Jerry and you just see him getting killed by the Forest Spirit again. You ask where Jerry is now and the Wish God says he'll give you one more chance, so you have to go through the battle map again. When you do, you get the option to fight The Eye Of Truth. When you beat him you get this message

Which is the end of Wishing Night and now we're waiting for the next chapter. There's also a whole concurrently-running plot where the Queen of the kingdom (who we're just meeting for the first time so we don't know much about her) enters the Wish Cave to try and find a cure for her ailing husband, the King, at the same time as Red. Apparently she has an enchanted voice and the Wish God wants her power, so he takes the form of the King to trap her in an illusion. When you defeat the Eye of Truth, you get this message

Which I'm assuming sets us up for whatever the next chapter is gonna be.

So. Uh. I've maybe scribbled up an AU where Sage is Jerry and MC is Red. Alternatively, Lucan could be Jerry and Sage could be Red.

Anyways I'm back from dealing with my grandparents, which was frustrating and depressing. Hope classes are going good!

Horrid mash of copy/pasted stuff from discord dms paired with me typing in new shit to bridge gaps and add points but. under cut again! probably some talk abt murder and violence [but its against affo mainly so its okay /JOKE] but mainly to save space on dashes since i type a lot also note that i tend to call caramel arrow carrow. it just rolls off my mental tounge better and its easier to speedrun typing in my fanon i've also added magnolia into her story but. for the sake of arguement i'll leave her and any magnolia-related changes out. but yeah they canonically kiss devsis told me /lh ill add more if i think of anything

shes a static character. NOTE. static characters are NOT inherently bad. but she has so much potential for being fucked up and questioning her loyalties and shit. as she stands she is just. There. she does a little bit of girlbossing but ESPECIALLy in chapter 14 she is just there to go its okay dark cacao ur doing the right thing it is alright u are okay :] and she doesnt even get resolution with affo. iirc they dont even rlly get a confrontation he just. Runs away. these r my main problems but ill get into a lot of wasted potential later. ill be so mad forever and ever they didn't let carrow kill affogato. like. she had a straight shot in the end when his sheilds were down and he was just trying to get away. ut she just goes "OHHH NO AFFOGATO IS GETTING AWAYYYYY" like babygirl you are the first watcher. What are you doing. i get that cr doesnt have the balls to violently kill him on screen but like u could have shot him and left him for dead at least. Like. .... idk. red velvet gets a crossbolt bolt to the face in TOSC its not too out there. but even then carrow seems like the type to want to kill someone cleanly and effectively no matter WHAT they did so she doesnt stoop to their level. so as far as my fanon goes she shot him thru the head when he was trying to escape. like again i know canon wouldn't do that but it is dissapointing to see nothing happen with him and carrow's arc yet another injustice to carrow's character. shes just. There honestly. like she doesnt DO ANYTHING. shes kinda just [woman standing discord emoji] you could honestly remove her from the plot without much difference which is. REALLY FUCKING SAD considering that she was so hyped up and is playable. her only real character trait is 'loyal to dark cacao'. which falls flat considering DARK CACAO IS FUCKED UP?? like i know affo is manipulating him or whatever but he had to have been at an incredibly low point in the first place - likely caused by dark choco's betrayel and the stress of losing so much , including many of his watchers, to the war. the main missed potential i see: the missed potential with her and dark choco. it's heavily implied he was very very close with her - and her mentor. she even has a line abt him being the one who taught her how to use a bow. it's p easy to assume he's the person who trained her and could probably be considered her non-blood informal older brother or maybe an idol. [i prefer the former but. Yeah] have her loyalty be split between the king who deeply hurt his people for decades [since even before affo i doubt it was good considering i can only IMAGINE how fucked up the kingdom was afrer the DFW with their watchers presumaby spread incredibly thin after so many losses] and FUCKING EXILED HER regardless of affo's imput and the prince who trained and partially raised her but has done so much fucked up shit and lost his path

NEITHER of them are good people. at least completely. do they deserve her loyalty? is she reeally doing good by following anyone?? is bias by being close to the royals clouding her judgement? she can't answer those questions

but No. dark cacao good everyine else bad :3. so dissapointing this is becoming more of a stretch but this is more a thinly veiled excuse to talk abt my fanon because i make her character so much cooler and sexier but. Ya! also not to say she was probably a trainee or barely out of training when dark choco betrayed everyone when he was probably her older brother figure andddd probably got shoehorned into the position of first watcher too fast since dark cacao was in such deep paranoia after getting betrayed by his own son he couldn't trust anyone short of who was practically his own daughter but. Ya! would have fucked. her cutscene thing says she became the first watcher at an incredibly young age. u can assume in canon that just means that she was so capable she earned it so early on but like. You could ALSO take rlly fucked up implications from that if you wanted to. like. Yeah. also i dont have as thorough thoughts on this but. it's sad that we didnt see much of her relationship with the other watchers. its obvious that they miss her, care about her, and are still loyal to her. i've always thought it was a really interesting thing that despite her exile and presumably being stripped of her title they all still call her first watcher. resisting the urge to talk abt her and magnolia so i wont but like. scenes with the other watchers could have rlly helped this!!! oh also if you ship carrow x affogato get the fuck off this post i actually hate you fuck you fuck yo ufuck yuyou fuck you. Die. thats all i remember for now. Bye girl.

shit okay this one is gonna be a Doozy

i cant rlly compile them into a list so im just gonna explain things . First is the more serious side

almond is pvs son ! biological son! this came out of a crack fic and then i decided that it is so canon and true . (to clarify i know this in no way is canon but my fanon is silly and i can do wharever the fuck i want)

his mom, hazelnut cookie (my oc) met and married pv and almond was born,, thing is she lives in parfaedia as a detective/wizard and she doesnt want to quit her job to be queen So she takes almond (pv is too busy to really take care of him all too well) and they agree to visit pv every week or so but i dont rlly feel like explaibing in detail rn tbh basically hazelnut and pv drift apart and get divorced and almond sees his dad less and less . And kind of starts to hate him more because when he DOES visit pv is too busy to really spend any quality time with him like things always seem to come up at the worst of times plus hazelnut likes to talk shit about the kingdom sometimes so almond doesnt like his father very much.

For his 21st birthday they went to the pv kingdom to celebrate and it was just . An overwhelming disaster and thats also the reason why almond doesnt drink ! shortly after his mom died thanks to a parfaedia institute student named blueberry scone cookie (another oc) and pv Tried to help by inviting him to the kingdom to live but his letter just made almond furious and he ripped it into shreds and hasnt seen pv since . Pv disappeared after the dark flour war soon after so it wojldnt have helped much anyways

ok now for the joke part

the day before almond was born pv had a dream and garfield the cat told him that the next day he would have a child on the garfield dark ride who would come out as transmasc later in their life (almond is afab CRY ABOUT IT) and then he wakes up in a cold sweat and tells hazelnut about his dream

thr next morning they go to oncel3rland and bring the easy bakr oven onto the garfield dark ride (cookie sex does not exist in my universe) and almond cookie is born !!!! pv wants to name him garfield but hazelnut threatened divorce so instead they went with Almond J. Cookie (almond jon cookie)

pv just starts refferijg to almond as a guy from day one and it pisses hazelnut off so bad until he comes out in the child switch room in the mummy ride at universal studios and also all of the ancients still call him garfield becquse pv insists thats his name . Now anything garfield related gives almond traumatic flashbacks and he will explode into tears at the sight of an orange lasagna loving cat

almond is the garfield prophet for the garphecy

walnut is called garfield ii by the ancients

and then he dies on silver bullet at knotts berry farm after his seatbelt comes off on the ride . Have a nice day

totsukuni no shoujo worked really well for me from every point like the creature designs are very interesting the pacing gives u a reason to care about the charas bonds without getting bored with it it handles its themes well & i love that the strongest bond isnt a romantic type of love and its still undeniably one of the most important aspects that makes the story work. its got its twists & i never saw them coming yet none of it felt like it was only for shock value. definitely recommend.

spoiler time but

man. just. the lengths they went for each other. teacher doing anything to keep her safe when the whole time there was nothing to keep her safe from. he cant save her from herself. but that he wouldve killed for her, the fact he literally gave his soul for her, gave up the last of what he had. man it really hits. and then that shiva came back and cared got him to return to himself. like it goes both ways. and yet. the whole time there was nothing to protect.

but also the whole. shiva and the kuro no ko are the same. that whole underwater scene. idk. im sleepy i cant say it well but. that like. even if shiva isnt actually the real thing, she exists somwhere inside that kuro no ko(i read in jpn im so sorry idk what eng term is used for it & im not using a literal translation) so in a way. shes still there. theyre the same. but also not. the whole idea of there being truth in falsehoods.

bc im going to be honest with u i thought the twist was going to be like. shiva was actually teacher's kid the whole time & when something happened to his wife she ended up with a random lady so the whole thing about her not actually being related wouldnt have been a lie. then idk i was expecting a reveal like yeah since he was such a good doctor it was proof of his relation to the gods they keep mentioning. and then they hit me with the twist they did & im still like What. but in a good way. from a plot perspective it's interesting i like it but as a reader god. pain.

& i think it handles the whole "one cannot exist without the other" theme pretty well. teachers whole existence as a way of saying not everything ur told is bad is actually bad & the fact most of the creatures seem to be pretty neutral. its true they can spread the curse but that in itself doesnt really make them bad. meanwhile the whole kingdom willing to sacrifice a child for a chance at being saved from something they dont really even understand. neither are true good or bad yet portrayed as dark and light. that theres no clear answer so to speak but the two cant truly be separated.

i feel like this is definitely one of those medias thats going to stay on my mind for a while

#it did what i like in stories & thats give me a reason to care about the charas #only to end up crying for the whole last book and a half bc of it #entirely serious i really do recommend totsukuni no shoujo/the girl from the other side #ESPECIALLY if u like creatures. VERY good creature designs #the whale has to be my fave design. its neat. theyre all neat tho.#im tired & i dont remember a single word ive typed here time to hit the post button

2) vace is here. sorry this is one of the parts i think abt the most so Vace Is Here! i htink lum and them show up partway thru the war as like. powerful (?) duke from another area who basically shows up and starts throwing his weight around but bc he's helping the kingdom they cant really tell him to go away. it's a whole thing

as for vace himself i think he shows up w/the intent to seduce the royal heir so he can take the kingdom (lol) and instead. is bamboozled into friendship. becomes a better person. can't fucking understand sols love life at all but he'll.... let it go or whatever. he GUESSES. i have a clear idea in mind that after he tries to be better hes like. should i join your honor guard and sol is like. take some time to think abt it. and instead he fucks off across the kingdom on a Journey and after like six months sols like. hey when u come back u should join my honor guard theres a place for u here. nad hes like. cool (doesnt come back for another year and a half)

3) idk what im doing with it but i like the idea of nem+cal+tammy as a childhood friend trio only nem kind of was always on the outside. kind of grow up and apart and then after peace is brokered is like. ok what the fuck do i do w/myself now. id like her and cal to learn how to be friends again essentially? honestly she might kiss sym in this GLKAHSGDLKHASLKGDHALKSDHG i think abt sym+nem eternally ever since peace ending dating nem

im not sure youre axtually supposed to talk about them a lot but i did start rambling on with most of them so its going under the read more

kakyoin from jojo's bizarre adventure - the funny gamer man :). i like how i managed to read/watch all of jojo but he still managed to be my favorite through it all. his backstory was just really relatable to me i guess.

Patches from the soulsborne games - hes just kind of a huge asshole everytime you meet but something about hearing his voice after he kicks you down a pit for the 10th time. A lot of it probably comes from his voice actor. he really sounds like hes enjoying himself every time he gets to voice him.

ichiban kasuga from yakuza like a dragon - hes just a very loveable guy. everything from the way he talks with his friends to the way he talks with everyday people makes him just easy to fall in love with. Its also nice seeing how despite what he goes through he still keeps his friendly personality

lady from devil may cry - shes really cool and i like her character a lot. her arc in the 3rd game is just really satisfying to follow from beginning to end. she doesnt get much in terms of story in 4 or 5 but i feel like her character is fine how she is and adding more would kinda take away from it. she did get a nice little moment in 5 though which i liked. Also its nice to know that in a series where all the other fighters have some form of demonic powers she is 100% human. And please capcom make her playable in 5!!!!!

Raiden from metal gear - My favorite boy whos been through so so much. I cant really talk about how i like him since that would mostly involve spoilers and would also make up multiple pages. In 2 i just like the way he develops throughout the story and how he finds meaning by the end. Hes also the protag of one of my favorite games metal gear rising revengance. Despite the over the top nature of the game i still think they did his character justice and its a nice extension of the story of 2 (though nothing compares to that imo)

Sans from undertale - Despite everything i still really like undertale, its world and its characters. And the funny bone man managed to still be my fav. His jokes and his mysterious nature all makes him really likable to me. His fight is pretty enjoyable too. also hes a skeleton so theres that.

Samus from Metroid - Basically everything i wish i was. Shes cool, strong and she still manages all of this without saying a whole lot. I especially like her body language in dread. pls just ignore how she is in other m....

Tienshinhan from dragon ball - this ones mostly an old favorite. he was my favorite charcater when i watched it as a kid and he still is. He just seemed really cool everytime he appeared. Still think its bullshit how he isnt considered the strongest human -3-

Bridget from guilty gear - this ones a very recent fav. i never really knew anything about her before she appeared in strive but she definitely made an impact on me. Something about seeing a trans girl accepting herself in a mainstream videogame just makes me really happy. Also her theme song is soooo good and is soooo relatable to me. Like yeah i also hate the alarm clock i chose and i also taste like vegetables i dont like. 😭

Aqua from kingdom hearts - Shes one of the more competend characters in the series. She isnt without flaws or anything but she definitely gets shit done when she wants to. Her fighting style is also really nice. And of course she has blue hair and pronouns 🙄

Yeah the whole "Numenorean supremacy" spiel is an aspect of Tolkien's universe that could really do to be bettter understood by most fans.

It doesnt help that the movies gave Faramir's whole spiel about the Gondorians mingling with "lesser men", and thus the justification for their catagorization of the different "Ranks" of men, to Gandalf, the one guy in LOTR who really, really would know better.

Tolkien in his letters explicitly refered to what Faramir told Frodo and Sam about Gondor and it's history as "Propaganda", which Faramir passed on because he didn't know there was anything faulty with it.

There was certainly some level of truth to a lot of it, but it was distorted, and exagerated for the purposes of modern Gondor.

For example, Gondor had some really bad kings, but honestly they weren't really responsible for the decline of their civilization the way faramir portrays it. That "Honor" mostly goes to it's nobility, while the kings generally tried to steer the ship of state. Also, the drastic decline in Numenorean lifespans in Gondor only truly took off during the Stewards reigns. So clearly the kings(occassional Horrific war crimes aside) had to have been doing something right.

Also the image that Faramir paints of the Northmen who became the rohirrim and their relationahip with Gondor is complete bull. It was the Kings who began that relationship and alliance with the northmen, in the form of the powerfull relationship between the mighty kingdom of Rhovanion and Gondor. The eothed(the rohirrims ancestors) were a successor kingdom to Rhovanion, and both states inherited and kept up that friendship after Rhovanion fell.

In other words, while the granting of Rohan to the Rohirrim happened under the stewards, it was the kings who forged that ancient alliance to begin with.

Also their classification of how closely the Rohirrim are to the Numenoreans is complete bull. While they are related very, very distantly, its nowhere near as close(nor through that shared set of ancestors Faramirs brings up) as Gondor wants to think.

As tolkien said, this entire bit was solely to make the alliance and friendship eith the rohirrim easier to swallow for the proud Numenoreans of Gondor.

I think Tolkien would probably have been way better off making it clear in narration or something that this wasn't information to be taken at face value, but he presumably expected to be able to flesh this stuff out in a later book about Arnor or something.

Oh, and speaking of which...

In the North, the Numenorean kingdom of Arnor eventually split off into three successor states. Arthedain, Rhudaur and Cardolan.

Now the impetous was three princes fighting for supremacy, but when you look at the borders, it becomes clear that the bigger picture was a fight between the nations main ethnicities.

All three new states were ruled by Dunedain nobility, but the dominant common people were different.

Cardolan's people were the people of the visions we see in Tom Bombadil's tales from the past, a now extinct people who lived in the barrowlands.

Rhudaur's people were the people Aragorn talks about in his tales of the folks who used to live in the north east of eriador, the people who fell under the influence of Angmar.

And finally the kingdom of Arthedain's main population was the people we would generally recognize as the northern Dunedain. People of cultural, and genetic Numenorean descent.

So with that in mind, one might assume that this kingdom just so happened to originally have had way more Dunedain immigrants than the other two, thus explaining why it's dominant culture was numenorean(with other peoples like the bree men and later hobbits a distant second). But that's not actually the case.

See, the Dunedain of Arthedain also originally had an indiginous, non-Numenorean majority in their lands.

Where they were different than both Rhudaur and Cardolan was that by the time Arnor broke into 3, the Dunedain and this indiginous population had intermarried and mixed together so hard that there no longer was a distinction between the two people anymore. They were all Dunedain.

Withouth losing the blessings of their ancestors, like the Gondorians eventually did in their pride and haughtyness.

I find that pretty cool to be honest, and it stands as a living proof that the Gondorians didn't have to go the way they did. It was their pride, their arrogance, and their need to see themselves and their ancestors as "Superior" to other men, inside and outside their country that led them to eventually lose their divine blessings, while the "Pure" northern Dunedain were a mixed people from the start.

One of the biggest crisis the Gondorians ever had was the Kinstrife, caused by one of their Kings(when he was still a prince) marrying a "barbarian" rhovanion princess, thus in the eyes of a lot of Gondorian nobility "dilluting" his "pure" numenorean blood, and doubtless the next king would be weaker in both lifespan and spirit.

He was not. The king in question was as long lived as all his ancestors, but it was the reaction to his ascention(a massive civil war) that put the then Gondorian culture in it's worst light. Of course he eventually won the war(with the help of Rhovanion), and the long term end result of all of that was the eventual alliance between Gondor and Rohan, but as we see with Faramir's propaganda, the Gondorians, despite the fact they truly did come to love Rohan and it's people, never really managed to fully shake off the prejudoce their ancestors had for the "lesser" northmen.

Now that's a solid case! I especially like how consistently the Dunedain are contrasts to Gondor throughout Tolkien's stuff, and yet I'm not aware of them ever coming into actual conflict. I think the closest thing is when Denethor sneers at the idea of Gandalf giving the crown to 'that ranger of the north,' and even that doesn't lead to a conflict with Aragorn himself.

Really, Gondor just by itself could fill books of analysis of the themes it illustrates.

eustace vane ideas.

both men that. well i think eustace’s background is that his family is all killed in a foe related incident and then he joins the society to get revenge and shit. so men who have lost family to an enemy, and their current lives heavily include ridding the world of that enemy to make it a better place. (vane’s has to do a lot more with protecting and helping the kingdom grow because he’s become a general knight which is less Specific regarding like. eustace’s job as Guy Who Kills the Foe)

vane is the kind of guy that reaches out to people he thinks are in need regardless of how long he’s known them. i think one day he could see eustace being on his own and being like hey man we met at a dinner once! how’s everything going. and then continuing to check in with him whenever he sees him because eustace “looks lonely”

vane is a lively person but eustace’s ideal “peace and quiet” isn’t a literal strict definition of silence. also vane knows how to read the room to a degree and respect other people’s boundaries so i don’t think he would be overly friendly

it all starts though because eustace keeps hearing about how vane is dog like and he’s like i gotta see for myself. i have to know. logically he knows it doesnt mean anything but i think he would keep hearing Dog and be like now what is going on here. does this man have a dog. he doesnt. but then they get acquainted and now vane wont really leave him too much alone

i think they would have at least a comfortable lunch together. vane says hi whenever he sees eustace and eustace acknowledges him and everyone’s like well how did this happen

I dont think i like totks plot.

Zeldas sacrifice is touching and a good place to go with her character. I just wish the rest of the games plot was as good as that

Botw was about failure and sacrifice and love and finding small joys in the wasteland and protecting quiet mundane life

And totk just doesnt really live up to its themes. Themes being: community. A good theme i really want to enjoy and in same ways there are parts where its done well- but the flashbacks with Rawrrawr, Sonia, and Ganandorf are very disappointing

I dont know what any of them really believe in. I dont know what makes Rawr guy a good king. I dont know how he interfaces with his kingdom. I dont know how sonia interfaces with her kingdom.

Like the theme of sacrifce being imparted onto zelda was good but???? Community should have also been imparted onto Zelda too. Or maybe in reverse, community imparted from Zelda to Rwarwu. She is a good ruler, she is willing to get into the dirt and rebuild hyrule with her own two hands. She has a relationship with the common people of hyrule. She wants alliances with people. In contrast Rawr just kind of seems like an asshole. Gannondorf may be evil but i cant help but feel having a guy kneel to you and swear loyalty is bad for relations.

He is a bad guy, i do doubt there was anything Rrrrrrr could have done to pacify him peacefully, but thats where ganons role as a villain / dark reflection / foil comes in. Show him being a bad leader. Show him rejecting and devaluing his community. Show him refusing to make sacrifices on behalf of his people, show him demanding them to make sacrifices in HIS stead. He had an army of gerudo standing behind him in one flashback and it was like the writers just forgot about them. The next army he gets are the monsters, gerudo are no where in sight. What happened there? Where did they go? Did they reject him? Why? When? Or did he reject them? How did they feel about this?

When i look at the plot i see a bunch of really cool building blocks that could have been used to tell a compelling narrative about kindness, community, team work, vs the inherent self destruction of cruelty and arrogance. Instead, the memories just sort of seem like building up to zeldas sacrifice. They could have done all those things together if they wanted. They had the time and money.

I got excited for ganon thinking i would get literally any context for his motivations. Windwaker ganon was based and basically in the right. I dont know why that was a one off. I think they need to retire him as a villain if im being honest. But if theyre going to keep him around the least they could do is let him be a character with thoughts and beliefs and values. The scene in windwaker where ganon spares links life because hes only insterested in the triforce, gives him a lot of layers in very little dialogue. You know. Efficient storytelling.

Gannon is my favorite villain. Or i thought so. I had played zelda titles before windwaker, but windwaker had really stuck with me. I think i just liked windwaker ganon. He was a bad guy, absolutely justified in rage against the gods. He cared for gerudo people and their suffering. He was willing to spare links life because doing so was senseless and pointless [until everything became pointless to him]. He had his own character arc. I actually hated that bastard Daphnes got in his way. Like the gods he destroyed the rest of the kingdom rather than allow it to fall into the hands of someone else. Making me feral. Let ganon have depth.

hiro retranslates dw8 guan xing part 1

hi, in this essay i will-

.... okay, this is not an essay at all. this is really just a rant on how the english localization of DW ruined one of my favourite characters.

so yes, without further ado... the issue with guan xing’s localization and why the original japanese guan xing is infinitely better than anything they could ever do with that kind of localization effort (pls hire me i’ll retranslate all his lines properly to actually fit his character as intended ;;;;)

DISCLAIMER: my translations are not perfect, i’m translating very literally because it sounds more awkward that way and he should be sounding more awkward, this is also to prove that koei’s missing a lot of the essence of his character because they decided to give him generic lines with no personality in the official localization

HELLO, and welcome to my ramble, it’s going to be long so don’t waste your time reading unless you are very, VERY bored.

SO... im going to go through every line in dw8xl and dw8e (not bothering w dw9/dw9e bc i dont have those on my pc) and point out what is wrong w... like most of his lines.

first thing’s first so i don’t have to repeat myself for every single translated line - THEY OMITTED HIS SPEECH ISSUES. as someone w speech issues myself im pretty offended! keep that shit in, its part of his character and i like it a lot bc its relatable! basically he talks like this: “hello... i hope that you... are having a good day.” every few words he will pause. yeah i probably made it a bigger deal than it sounds like but it’s important i point that out bc it pisses me off that they just completed omitted it except in like, one cutscene line. he’s got speech issues, fuckin’ keep them in. jesus good god

okay. so without further ado...

In-battle lines

i don’t have the official translations because i refuse to play this game in english, i refuse to hear anything english dub for any musou game, etc etc. and the sound gallery doesn’t provide the text of however they dubbed/translated it, so i’ll just list each line and which action they are.

Musou attack 1 - “i won’t miss.”

Aerial Musou attack - “there... is that your weak point?” (HE’S GOT NO CONFIDENCE EVEN WHEN HE DOES A MUSOU SOGNFDJKHMSDKFH HE’S SO CUUUUTE)

Musou attack 2 - “in this hand... is power...!” (this is the alt musou where he uses papa’s weapon)

EX attack - “you’re open...!”

Rage attack - “watch...! haaaaaaaaaaaaaah!”

Storm rush - “how is this move? ... it went well”

Switch counter - “i won’t let you.”

Somersault - “i must be careful, right?” (err he phrases "i must be careful” as a question which is awkward but... it’s guan xing, he is very awkward)

General Lines

original: “enemy officer... defeated”

i understand that everyone’s “enemy officer defeated” line gets personalized in localization, i support that decision. but this is just kind of weird bc he actually doesnt really say the stuff his siblings say about being the child of the god of war and everything. most of the stuff he says instead is “i fight to protect” “i will protect”... so i mean this isn’t the worst line. it’s still alright, he does want to seek revenge for his father’s death and all, so i get it. i’ll give it a pass, honestly.

original: “i am a true warrior of the three kingdoms...???”

YES HE IS LITERALLY ASKING A QUESTION BECAUSE HE DOES NOT HAVE CONFIDENCE IN HIMSELF AND THIS WILL BE SHOWN VERY CLEARLY IN A LOT OF HIS LINES. I DONT KNOW HOW THIS GOT TRANSLATED INTO... THIS MESS OF A LINE. this is the furthest thing from his personality, this guy has not much confidence bc he has been babied a lot when growing up (bc hes a huge introvert). i dont know, this is one of the wrongest lines in the entire game because where does this confidence come from? why does he sound so cocky? “watashi wa shin no sangoku musou ka...?” -> “ka” literally denotes a question. HE IS QUESTIONING HOW THE HELL HE IS THE TRUE WARRIOR OF THE THREE KINGDOMS. HE DOESNT EVEN KNOW HOW OR WHY IT HAPPENED!!!!!!!!!!!! FIX THIS SHIT THIS IS SO WRONG

here, i’m making my point already about him having little confidence in himself and being unsure about like everything. the localization is not awful, honestly it’s passable, but i personally would have loved to see more of the lack of confidence/being unsure. it’s a huge thing going on w his lines in general and i relate to it a lot, please dont remove that. (they did)

original: “just... where did i go wrong...?”

passable, pretty much an exact translation without the speech struggle :/

original: “they caught us off-guard... what should i do...? i need to think...”

it’s... kind of passable. again i’m not satisfied bc... man. keep his anxiety and panic in there. helps him feel more human!! also bc it’s relatable for me so >:( KEEP THAT SHIT IN THERE.

original: “you came here from a strange place... why?”

he’s more questioning the enemy directly in the original which i like better. dunno, the localization kind of has a different feel to it where he, i guess, Knows its an ambush? where as hes just asking what the heck you are doing at that place that you are trying to ambush, in the original. not very satisfied w the localization but again it’s not the worst (compared to the 1000 KO’s line lol)

it sounds awkward bc he sounds awkward, im not making this up lol. they did basically just reword it and make it flow better but i think his awkwardness is a huge part of his charm :/ so they shouldve kept it more fragmented and awkward as it should be.

that was really hard to translate because i didnt know what 眩い武 meant lol and then i went to search for the appropriate kanji bc i had no idea what he was saying. anyways i think the japanese line is a lot cuter, but it does sound a bit like an awkward/cheesy compliment, but he IS awkward so....

errr okay i kind of translated the last part awkward but basically he’s saying she has the strength of 100 people in one person. because you know, she’s fuckin STRONG as hell (and probably uses him as a weight when she lifts). this is quite different from how they localized it, it just comes across as kinda generic instead...

original: allow me to fight you. guan xing... heads into battle

kinda weird how a lot of character has “[name], MAIRU” lines but it only ever gets translated for zhao yun and zhao yun only huh. but yeah quite a number of characters have this generic “[name] heads/charges/etc into battle”, i opted to go with “heads into battle” for guan xing bc hes awkward. he wouldn’t say he’s charging into battle LMAO

original: alone...? what kind of tactic is that?

honestly, passable. it’s more or less the same.

original: how strong... i’ve become interested. i would like to fight you again...

errr i mean it’s kind of the saaaame i guess?? though he specifically mentions being interested in your strength in the original rather than like nice skills. so it’s a slight difference there but...... i’d say it’s.... kinda passable

yeah it’s passable i guess... although of course they love to leave the uncertainty out as always :’)

Ambition Mode Lines

original: “guan xing... will fight with all his power.”

it’s basically the same, i’ll consider it passable.

original: this base... i won’t let you set foot in it...

again it’s pretty much the same, i would consider it passable.

original: for the sake of protecting you... i will do all i can in my power

hey there’s what i mentioned earlier about how, in the original, he has this big thing about wanting to be the one doing the protecting instead of being the one being protected! the original really gets that point across that he wants to do the protecting and he is going to do his utmost best at it! the localization sounds generic as fuck!

original: for your sake... i will protect you.

??? why did the localization barely change it from the other one LOL. it somehow sounds more formal than the previous but this should be the more casual one. again i like his japanese lines better bc he looks out for others and not so much himself (which will become pretty evident later), with his “for the sake of protecting you / for your sake” .... it really gets that point across.

original: this... it will rid you of your tiredness... i think.

guan xing the most awkward character in the entire game, strikes again! he really does awkwardly just be like “this...........” and YEAH OF COURSE THE “I THINK” AT THE END TOO he’s so awkward and cute. the struggles of speaking is too relatable :(

it’s kind of the same meaning either way but again the original is a more fragmented and awkward sentence. but also, it’s important to note that he mentions guan ping has been specifically PROTECTING him this whole time, again ties in to how guan xing wants to be the one doing the protecting instead of being protected, which is why he wants to show how much he has grown to guan ping.

kinda the same again, but i think he’s more encouraging in the original which is nicer imo
