tbh, I feel lost on all forms of social media. Back before tumblr updated and we all moved to twitter I was doing okay here. And now I’m back. I accidentally lost my old account (don’t smoke and think you’re deleting your side profile) and maybe I’ll use tumblr to vent. But I just can’t seem to get a hold on anything, tiktok, reddit, twitter, insta even snapchat. Like i don’t get why I can’t fit in anywhere. Do I whine to much? Maybe? But if I was hot and whined about shit the twitter gays would eat that shit up. So like am I just boring? Does my personality not blend well on social media? What does that say about me irl?

I've seen people remark on how awkward the 1967 scene is and that is so frustrating because, for me, it is one of the most emotionally resonant flashbacks in the entire series. It is so multifaceted and ripe with implication and that assertion is baffling. As though just because this conversation appears to be hard for them, it must mean that there has to be some sense of weirdness or awkwardness between them?
This scene feeds heavily into my theory that 1941 ended in some sort of aborted romantic moment between the two, most likely initiated by Crowley. Aziraphale can barely stand to look at Crowley because the very first moment he looks him in the face, he can't stop himself from giving him this hooded eyes, barely contained look of longing.
Tumblr media
The next thing we see is Aziraphale immediately launching into a statement about his fear for Crowley's existence that is as brutally sincere as it is heartrending. His eyes are wide, his voice is heavy with emotion, and it's clear that he is terrified beyond belief to lose Crowley. Even as he acquiesces and gives him the holy water, you can see that he wants to take it back and deny him it all over again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then, of course, Crowley asks if he can give him a lift, which is definitely something that they both know is a totally different question than what lies on the surface, given that they're mere feet from the bookshop and at first Crowley frowns so deeply that it's almost cartoonish but a moment after Aziraphale turns him down you get this glimpse of very real sadness:
Tumblr media
Aziraphale sees it for what it is and in an attempt to comfort him, without being able to do what currently seems impossible to him, shares a fanciful but resigned fantasy about spending time together unbothered and unrestrained, all to the tune of these tight little, loving smiles:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When he asks again, you can just see Crowley's desperation for Aziraphale not to go. It's hard to say how long they'd been apart, but it's safe to say that for them, that previous interaction likely is very fresh in their minds.
Tumblr media
Aziraphale has always been more fearful than Crowley when it comes to their feelings for each other. You could even potentially look at the holy water as a metaphor for their relationship. In his expressions of concern about The Arrangement, Aziraphale has always been remarking on how Crowley could be destroyed, similarly to his words here. So when he's telling him, "You go too fast for me, Crowley," what he's really saying is, "I'm terribly afraid and I'm not ready to take that step if it means that I could lose you." And it's plain to see by the wistful look on his face that it pains him greatly to say it:
Tumblr media
The scene so quickly cuts to Crowley looking intensely at the holy water after Aziraphale has left the car (as if trying to convince you that that was the real point of the scene) that it's easy to miss this devastated expression on Crowley's face:
Tumblr media
There's no look of perceived rejection on his face. Just a somber look of resignation. There are so many barriers in front of them, and I think that Crowley was willing to risk it but understood that Aziraphale wasn't ready to.
This is the most honest and laid bare we ever see these two be when it comes to their emotions. There's so much being said without being said and even their actual words (i.e. Crowley remembering exactly the amount of time when the 'fraternizing' conversation happened) are so full of emotion that it might even be a bit hard for some people to watch.
It's not awkward. It's just that the scene is just so incredibly earnest and heavy with coded language that it's easy to be swept up by the fact that the two aren't engaged in their typical banter and bickering. What we truly have here is an incredibly difficult and loving conversation between two people who are stuck in a seemingly impossible situation.

i want to talk about how the parallel between gideon and bedelia mirrors the parallel between pope nicholas iii and lucifer in dante's inferno
contrapasso: "the divine punishment of a sinner mirrors the sin being punished"
in dante's inferno canto 19, the pilgrim and virgil are in the eighth circle of the inferno where those guilty of simony (corrupt churchmen) are punished. these people (including pope nicholas iii) are eternally, with flaming feet, upside down in baptismal font-like holes.
their contrapasso is their baptism being perverted in the same way they perverted the church. upside down in holes like baptismal fonts, their feet are "baptized" with fire instead of their heads being baptized with water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(left is pope nicholas iii's flaming feet. right is dante and virgil reaching the other side of earth after climbing lucifer's body, where lucifer's legs stick out.)
in mark musa's notes for canto 19, this specific line lit my brain up like fireworks
"in the final canto of the inferno…dante pauses and looks up to see the raised legs of lucifer protruding from the crevice in which he is frozen, like a magnification of the legs of nicholas. just as nicholas defrauded god's church, so lucifer tried to defraud god himself"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the beginning of gideon and bedelia's contrapasso-esque punishments. i just noticed the same leg is the first to go for both. and theyre both wearing blue. hmmm....)
in november, i made a post connecting gideon and bedelia's fates in hannibal: their limbs being cooked and eaten one by one in front of them. both gideon and bedelia were living lives that were not theirs to live. gideon as the chesapeake ripper, and bedelia as hannibal's companion in italy. so, they both get to see how it feels to (literally) have a part of them, their identity, their lives, taken from them, just as they took those things from another. the divine punishment of a sinner mirrors the sin being punished.
just like nicholas defrauded god's church,
gideon mocked the chesapeake ripper
so lucifer tried to defraud god himself,
bedelia tried to mock hannibal and will themselves.

We gotta talk about Rome, y'all.
Tumblr media
So, the flashback in Rome is pretty much exclusively the only time Crowley is actively short with Aziraphale and it has always sort of itched my brain as to why. When I finally got my hands on the script book it started to make sense:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the uninitiated, Caligula was a Roman Emperor so despicable that there's literally a wiki dedicated to his atrocities.
Some of the deplorable things he was said to have done include, but aren't limited to:
Ordering criminals to be fed to the wild animals used for Gladitorial entertainment, after having cut their tongues out
Decapitating and butchering several people
Beating a priest to death with a mallet
Crucifying, burning, and suffocating multiple people
Literally having a Senator he disliked ripped apart by a mob
With this in mind, we know that Crowley, despite his indifferent attitude toward his demonic assignments, actively works against hurting people and animals, and even though his dialogue implies that he never tempted Caligula, we don't actually know what he might have witnessed. Still, it's not at all out of the realm of possibility that he saw things that could have straight up left him scarred psychologically.
Though the filmed scene leaves this portion of the conversation out, including his failed rebuff of Aziraphale's company, it's clear that he's in some emotional distress. With this in mind, Aziraphale's appearance may have occurred at just the right time. If he saw even just a hint of the monstrosity and madness of Caligula, he'd have needed some sort of comfort, so Aziraphale's stupid question and temptation for oysters may have been the best thing that could have happened under the circumstance.
Plus, given Aziraphale's ignorance about Caligula (he was there for Nero,) he'd have no idea how badly Crowley was messed up. He never reacted to Crowley's irritation or boorish attitude with anything other than continued enthusiasm for his presence. Demonhood has likely been incredibly tragic and traumatizing for Crowley at times, and, in this scene, Aziraphale was a balm for that pain without ever knowing.
