As it usually happens on here, we become fans of things by osmosis if we didn't seek it out for ourselves. So I've been following you for a bit and I have finally crossed the threshold from "this person I follow really loves this media and I love seeing their love for it on my dash, so glad they're having fun" over to "I wanna have fun, too." And that's all thanx to @thatgothsamurai's photobooth art.

So, I hope you can guide me on where I should start with patpran and inkpa, and the rest. Like, are they on separate shows that crossover? A spinoff? Like, what's going on, where do I start, how do I watch. Like you, I'm in the US. Any suggestions are appreciated.

okay so both patpran and inkpa are canon pairings from the thai bl bad buddy and its related special episodes! all are produced by the thai production company gmmtv.

the show and all related episodes are available to watch on youtube with english subtitles - i'll link to relevant playlists.

THE MAIN SHOW: BAD BUDDY THE SERIES

directed by "aof" noppharnach chaiyahwimhon (who is gay himself), and starring "nanon" korapat kirdpan as pran, and "ohm" pawat chittsawangdee as pat. the original show is twelve episodes, which aired from october 2021 to january 2022. i watched it for the first time in february 2022 and have not known peace every since

the premise is that pat and pran, who have lived next door to each other since birth, have been rivals all their lives because their families hate each other. after pran's sent off to boarding school for three years, they are unexpectedly reunited at university - where they find that their friend groups are also enemies, so they have to keep up the pretense of hating each other. but of course they fall in love instead!

the main story is about patpran, but inkpa is a canon side pairing featuring "love" pattranite limpatiyakorn as pa, pat's younger sister, and "milk" pansa vosbein as ink, a classmate of pat and pran's. though they get less screentime, i still think they have a delightful romantic arc themselves!

SPECIAL EPISODES

zero photography: an inkpa special episode that is set after the main show. directed by "tee" bundit sintanaparadee, whom i don't know much about, and aired in august 2022

our skyy x bad buddy x a tale of thousand stars: so our skyy 2 was an anthology of special episodes released between april and june 2023 for a bunch of different gmmtv bls. each show was supposed to have two special eps for their characters, but since two shows directed by p'aof were getting special eps (the other one being a tale of thousand stars, also a delightful show), he decided to use four episodes as a crossover of the two shows. in the bad buddy timeline, these eps take place during a timeskip that happens in the original show between episodes 11 and 12, and features patpran but has a few great inkpa appearances too. you don't really need to have seen atots to understand the eps, i don't think? but they probably are more enjoyable if you have haha

EXTRAS

"just friend" music video: nanon sings two songs on the bad buddy soundtrack, and ohm sings one for our skyy 2, all of which have music videos, but i'm linking to this song of nanon's particularly because the music video its own story unrelated to the show at all! it's very cute and is basically an au where they are employees at the same hotel (and in love of course)

23.5 degrees the series: this is not technically related to bad buddy, but milk and love are going to be starring in gmmtv's first full-length gl, 23.5 degrees, which will be directed by "fon" kanittha kwunyoo (who i believe is a lesbian)! thai gls are just starting to get attention and backing by the major tv studios, and milklove's known chemistry from playing inkpa, as well as an exciting supporting cast and director, are making everyone super excited for this

there are also TONS of behind-the-scenes and making-of extras if you get into the show but i figured this was enough to start with :D

I'm docking (very few) mental points for the ending because that felt weirdly rushed, but other than that? love it. I could've done without Yamato going back and forth on the boundary-respecting – I just don't like the "no no no yes" stereotype, and they had Kakeru play to that one too many times imo. but. I wish we could get rid of that trope, and I REALLY wanted Kakeru to initiate at least ONE kiss (or at least for us to get one that wasn't dead-fish-y on his part, I guess), but that's about it for complaints (and I know jdorama aren't big on kisses most of the time anyway).

I'm going to miss this little show!

Revice, Episode 48!

Jesus Christ, it's been 47 episodes already... not counting the vast amount of side content, that's a good deal over a thousand minutes worth of demon stamping, compelling family drama, and really poor marketing on Bandai's part. Yeah, I see you collectors, and I realize and sympathize with how unpleasant Revice's merchandising has been to your wallets when it really shouldn't have been.

If I seem a little cranky, it's because I woke up at 6 am after accidentally having a good bit of this episode spoiled for me. ...and also my mattress is awful, but you don't need to worry too much about that.

Spoilers, I guess... Fun fact, this is phrase is a holdover from the ancient days where I used to provide commentary on Chuggaaconroy's EarthBound LP remake. It was mostly meant to be kinda ironic, since I was talking about a Let's Play of all things, but I've said it so much it kinda feels weird to go without it.

...anyways, yeah, let's go then.

-Gotta show George his best, Ikki.

-I don't have a whole lot to say about the action, which is really good by the way, but I do wanna take a bit to talk about something interesting.

-George seeking to completely free himself from Masumi's control is a very interesting motivation... his obsession with the Riders is ironically only possible because of his dad and people like him. Shocker, Noah, the countless organizations like them, they all sought power for their own purposes, damn near all of them extremely selfish ones. And the Riders rose above that selfishness and their own personal tragedies to become heroes.

-That's where the Karizakis come in. Masumi formed his own organization. Combating the Deadmans and the corrupt Fenix is definitely a noble goal, but Masumi's logic and method for doing so are selfish. I have to ponder whether or not Masumi would be so willing to atone for his mistakes if he never had George. With how long he's been playing everybody on the field, how willing he is to dig through his son's garbage.

-And meanwhile, at Fenix, George indulged in his own vices. Sacrificing practicality for things he thought were cool with Revice, creating the TwoSiDriver and letting Kagerou steal it, willingly putting Hiromi in such danger without questioning why... even decades into the future, with the world in outright ruin, we see George holed up in his basement with all of his favorite Riders, tinkering away and hoping for the ultimate lucky break.

-It's just as Ikki's trying to drill into George's head. He really can't forget the good times he had with his Dad, no matter what. I'm sure Ikki is imagining, just as we are right now, what kind of even stronger non-demonic Rider would be created if the two could've truly become a family again.

-Actually, come to think of it, we don't have to imagine what that'd be like. Because we've seen Kamen Rider Century first hand. We met Ryunosuke and Hideo Momose in Beyond Generations, going through the almost exact same scenario. Evil science guy with a love for his family is involved in the creation of a Kamen Rider in the 20th century. He disappears after dealings with demons and turns up decades later in the future. The son has never truly moved on or accepted the loss of his relationship with his father, and understandably refuses to hear anything he has to say now out of a very understandable feeling. Thanks to Ikki's intervention, the two are willing to put aside their conflict for the sake of the world. Ikki murders the fuck out of the big evil scary demon monster, and the world is safe once again, please buy our toys.

-Where's the difference in their story that caused their vastly different endings, you ask? Well, if you ask me, what separated the Momoses from the Karizakis was their willingness and opportunity to communicate. Having a kid of his own had to have put things in perspective for Hideo, and Ryunosuke being so openly happy to see his son again would've made things go a lot smoother. Meanwhile George and Masumi treat each other very aloofly, not unjustifiably on George's part to be clear, and so they were very unwilling to meet in a way that didn't involve the Igarashis or Weekend in some way. I think the biggest difference between them though was time. Both runtime and in-universe time. The Momoses made up basically over the course of an afternoon because they recognized the necessity of working together thanks to the immediate threat of Diablo, but the Karizakis didn't have that epiphany. Man, I thought the last one was good; this just, like, filled me with joy. The unique joy of being someone who really likes cartoons.

I don’t even know how to put it, it’s just, like, all the strengths of The Owl House, no notes. Omg, the Lumity dance?? I am insane for stuff that’s dancing and combat at the same time. It was so pretty and sweet and great. The shipteasing is soooooo much fun. The way neither of them know it’s mutual but they just have all these moments where they understand each other and are focused on each other a little more than friends would be…

I think it took a little while in the show for Amity’s character to really interest me, but omg it is such a payoff the way her tenderness keeps showing through her armor. Thinking of her worrying about asking her cute little crush to the prom is making me melt. The photo at the end where Luz pulls her into frame and she has her little blush??

This episode had me thinking about how Luz looks through Amity’s eyes. She’s such a floppy, impulsive goofball compared to the latter’s composure. The idea that that’s what makes Amity think Oh God, I can’t NOT date her… It’s so sweet and funny. Also, I didn’t remember Luz actually calls herself a bad boy in this episode, like I did a few posts ago. 😆

I loved Amity reacting to Hooty (read: beating the shit out of him), it was so characterful and off-the-wall. I loved butch Eda. I loved Eda’s worry over Luz. She referred to her as her kid for one of the first times. PLEASE let her get to coparent Luz forever and ever… Omg, and I loved Luz’s goofy hybrid outfit, Amity’s elegant dress, Willow’s Tinker Bell ensemble… and the otter with a dark side! I feel like I remember Luz actually wearing the otter suit, that must happen later??

I loved Gus’s MCing. It was almost surprising to see him with that much personality and presence. I think he always has some funny lines but he’s not always as strong as in these last couple episodes.

I think Luz’s worries about her mom really didn’t stand out to me as much as the Amity and Grom drama itself, but it was definitely a strong thread. I loved her message at the end. That line, “Someday I’ll tell you all of this,” with the shot out the window, totally made me all nostalgic about all the crazy magical stuff that’s happened. And omg… the Vee teaser is so eerie but so cute. She wants to be taken care of so bad. 🥺 (If you don’t know the spoiler I’m referring to… don’t worry about it.)

Next time: Not your average underdog story.

I am still recovering from the FLUFF and the WHIPLASH, y’all.

Luz figuring out WitteBelos’ experiments in merging glyphs. So proud of this kid...and King gesturing to Eda to distract Luz from the stress and anxiety and us getting a wonderful flashback episode. The Clawthorne-Owl House family is so supportive.

The call backs from previous episodes! How worried Lilith looked when Eda answered the questions so effortlessly (which led to her looking for a curse at the Night Market). The way Eda immediately hid Lilith when they were about to be caught by Principal Faust. And the current adults/unseen parents as Hexside students!

Everyone, this is the voice of young Raine Whispers:

The montage of Raine and Eda getting through the event is so funny and heartwarming. With Raine, Eda’s funny pranks turned into works of genius. These two are definitely meant to be.

Also worth noting is how the other students (even from different schools) were mocking the worth of Bard magic. The other students who confronted and “recruited” Eda were confused as to how powerful Raine turned out to be considering their magic track, yet Eda scoffed at it and called Bard magic “cool”. Eda’s awesome, even at a young age.

And Eda is STILL awesome. Look at her:

And we come to the part where I nearly screamed in my room at almost 10am:

RAINE WHISPERS IS FAKING BEING BRAINWASHED.

Everyone made a mistake downplaying how awesome Bard magic is. Raine wasn’t blowing on the tea to cool it down; they’re whistling at it to neutralize the potion! TAKE THAT, TERRA!

And DARIUS IS HIS CO-CONSPIRATOR!

How long have these two Coven heads been working together? Is Eberwolf included? Are there other Coven heads working against Belos aside from these two? AAAAAAAH!

The scary part: the plan to drain the coven heads of their magic for whatever WitteBelos is planning on the Day of Unity. Considering Phillip’s wrathful disgust of witches a few episodes ago and what Warden Wrath shared last week, it sounds like Phillip Wittebane is all out to end all witches. This would explain why “Belos” wants all witches to join the coven system: to ensure that all the witches get their magic sucked up. This ties in with the experiments on the basilisks that Vee mentioned, because basilisks consume magic. The worldbuilding, writing, and planning put into this show is EFFING excellent.

Which sounds like a rather simplistic and petty thing to do, but Phillip Wittebane doesn’t seem like a rational person when Luz and Lilith met him.

Darius may have a point in suggesting to bring in Eda to stop Belos: her magic-stopping abilities could be key to stopping WitteBelos’ plans, but Raine won’t have it. They don’t want to hurt Eda and would rather have an alternative plan in place than to put Eda in harm’s way.

THAT WAS THE CUTEST SHIT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.

Drunk Henrik telling Russ what a massive crush he has on him was just. ADORABLE. The cutest Henrik has ever been, and I thought his crushes on John and Carole were cute! My precious baby, I love him so much. (The expression on his face when he realised Russ was leaving made me so sad, I’m glad we know Russ does actually stick around.)

And the best part is that everyone else is really seeing it now. SO many tweets about how much they’re into each other, including from Calli Kitson who does official promo stuff for the show.

I just. AAAAAAAH HENRIK IS GETTING A BOYFRIEND AND A HAPPY ENDING AND HE’S GOING TO COME OUT AND I LOVE THIS SO MUCH.

As they say: unfollow me now, this is going to be the only thing I tweet about for the next week. I’ve wanted this for years fuck. What the fuck.

(Also, some further character development for Russ, I see. The whole speech to the patient about how “I wish I’d been that popular when I was your age” implies Russ has been quite lonely in the past, not unlike Henrik himself. Gah. They’re so different yet they have so much in common. Russ is literally, like, the PERFECT love interest for Henrik.)

They also hinted at Henrik’s feelings for Carole again tonight, which does comfort me because I kind of started worrying that they’d just make Henrik gay because the Holby writers tend to forget that being bi is a thing. But nah, he’s still bi. If they continue weaving this into the storyline, I wonder if it’ll be Carole’s death that ends up pushing Henrik closer to Russ? Sort of seeking solace in him and stuff. Plus paralleling Henrik losing someone he loved (Carole) to Russ having lost someone he loved (Ami). It would also work with my theory that their romance will start at Christmas... hm.

Elsewhere, unfortunately, not all the autistic men in Holby City Hospital were as happily in love as Henrik tonight. Eli got his moment of joy after finding out Amelia was pregnant, but then they found out she has to choose between the pregnancy and continuing her brain tumour treatment and I just... god. What an utterly heartwrenching storyline.

I really hate that this is so clearly being set up to end with Amelia dying, but I do have to say the writing and acting in the Eli/Amelia scenes tonight was EXCELLENT. That scene with them both in the hospital chapel in particular was beautiful. Davood Ghadami and Lucy Briggs-Owen are both such fantastic actors.

Another fantastic actor is Trieve Blackwood-Cambridge, who was excellent tonight as Josh. I just. I don’t have much to say on that storyline except poor Josh :( I really hope they’re not actually setting him up for an affair with the woman from therapy. Jange deserve a happy ending, and I also feel like shoving an affair into Josh’s storyline would take away from the important subject matter.

All in all, that wasn’t as great as last week’s, but it was a good episode, some very good writing, some INCREDIBLE acting, and Henrik being hopelessly, adorably in love - what more could you ask for?
