Soulmate AU with June; pt 2

pls read part 1 first! Thanks to those who comment and motivate me to actually post things :) I am once again taking liberties with June’s backstory because I need things to have a cohesive narrative but we know like 3 things about this man (also liberties with traveler but i feel like that’s fine since they’re Us)

It’s been two years since June escaped the facility. Two years since Julian died. In that time he’d felt his soulmate find love, that wasn’t him. And he told himself he was fine with that because he knew that he would never be good enough for anyone. Since his talk with the other experiment all those years ago, he’d become quite skilled at blocking the transference of his own emotions to his soulmate. It was harder for him to block receiving, as it gave him comfort to know that someone who was meaningful to him was still out there. 

However, in the last few weeks he’s only felt a despairing kind of loneliness from his soulmate. While concerning, he’s tried not to dwell on it. With the K’merii on the rise there was unrest across the system, who wouldn’t be feeling at least something negative.

Especially with the crew of the A6 on a critical mission right on Goldis. Walking briskly through the narrower streets of the city, June reminds himself not to scowl so much as not to attract attention, however tense he may be. The captain trusted him with one of the more crucial aspects of the mission due to his efficiency and lack of emotional attachment, leading him right to the palace. He can feel his soulmate’s unease coursing through him, which didn’t make his own any better. June picks up his speed as the time approaches for him to complete his section and he’s just waiting for Calderon to call him on his com at any moment. He has the palace in his view, his left hand palming the pistol strapped to his hip. Then, all he can do is watch as a series of explosions knocks the palace off of its foundation and it crumbles before his eyes. The thrum of his soulmate’s emotions in the back of his mind comes to a terrifying silence.

You had been running. Whether to Vexx or just away from where you’d been trapped your whole life, you weren’t sure yet. You knew when you felt your infatuation with Vexx growing that he wasn’t your soulmate. You didn’t have the fated moment of “ah” when you first met him. But he cared about you, and you each motivated each other to try and make each tomorrow better. Your real soulmate, wherever and whoever they were, had long since been lost from you. You think you were about 11 when suddenly you couldn’t feel their emotions anymore. You had cried for days on end, with Nerissa being the only comfort you had. Even she had to urge you to move on. Every now and again you could swear you could still feel them, but the feeling would pass just as quickly and you soon dismissed the thought. Just wishful thinking on your part. A pawn in a political game doesn’t need a soulmate.

You’re dressed for your brother Sorenn’s wedding, though with no intention of going. You know that Nerissa would be the only one to notice you weren’t there, and all she would do is remind herself to chide you about it later. Finally, you had an opportunity to find the one person beyond your sister who had truly cared about you. Your plan was to scope out the regular hang-out spots for the Royal Guard that he’d mentioned to you before, in order to at least have some knowledge of where you should be heading. You had made it to the outskirts of the palace, the beginning of businesses and homes that had enough money to be in personal contact with royalty. It’s then that you hear the first explosion go off and you turn to see an entire section of the palace wobbling dangerously. The great hall, where the reception was being held. Panic fills your mind as you think of your sister, your entire family inside as the second explosion goes off and the entire palace caves in on itself.

You had at least enough survival instinct to duck into a shallow ditch with a stone bridge overhead, hoping to avoid most debris. Unfortunately, you did not have the foresight to think about the structural integrity of said bridge, and when you hear the groaning of stones scraping against each other, you only have enough time to look up before it collapses onto you. You find your mind surprisingly peaceful in knowing that you and your sister wouldn’t have to live a day without each other.

June discovers your body in the crew’s sweep through the rubble to make sure there was help for any possible survivors or information regarding Zovack. Well, what he notices first is the splash of red on the near perfect white limestone. Digging through the rubble as if it was sand, he finds your unconscious but alive body and just knows that he has to help you. When he’s seen gently cradling your body in his arms, headwound no longer actively bleeding with a scrap of cloth June had ripped off from his sleeve wrapped around the worst parts, the crew is unsurprisingly wary. 

“June!” Ryona cries out, seeing an injured person almost activates her doctor’s intuition, “Who is that, where did you find them?”

June repositions you in his arms to give Ryona a better look at your head and other wounds. 

“They were not far from the palace. I don’t think they’re a part of the royal family since they were so far away from the festivities. But we have to help them.”

“No, actually,” Damon cuts in, eyes narrowed in focus, “we don’t, we don’t have to do anything except leave this goddamn planet in one piece ourselves.”

Bash looks on nervously, but then speaks up, “I...I’m not sure, but they don’t look dangerous. They don’t even have any weapons on them. We can at least guarantee they’re not K’merii.”

“If we don’t help them....who will?” June asks, his own pain bleeding into his voice.

Calderon, after silently observing the situation eventually says, “They look like they urgently need medical attention. We’ll take them with us and have Ryona get them stable but they’re your responsibility to take care of afterwards, June.” 

Cal starts walking back to the ship in order to try and have any chance of getting out of Goldis’ atmosphere without K’merii trailing them. From their shadowed area in the rubble they aren’t in immediate danger, but he knew that at any moment they could be ambushed and the whole conversation would mean nothing with them all dead.

June just nods and shifts you to a more comfortable position to be while he runs, and takes off quietly with the rest of the crew.

A few days later you wake up disoriented and aching. At the same moment you sit up and try to blink enough to truly see your surroundings, the door swishes open and in walks the largest and yet the most beautiful man you’d ever seen. In that moment your eyes become almost more than clear, you’d never seen so clearly in your life. A feeling of belonging and peace settles in your chest, and while you feel like you’ve never met this man before, you know that you know him. How did you know him?

June is surprised to see you awake, but even more surprised when his mind in a way, snaps into place. He feels the flood of emotions he’s used to wash over him, even if they’re heightened and different. It’s not usually confusion and not usually the same intensity, but he knows these feelings intimately. And that fucking terrifies him.

“don’t ever marry anyone unless you’re partner is also financially stable” was what my mother told me while we were driving back on a thick night of October, back from work. She checked the signals and pressed on the gas in our comfortable and warm Audi A6 while the conversations we had were rather distressing and chilling and about my dad.

I had to admit that she wasn’t wrong. That he had really did leave us to go take care of his mum in a county so far away from us that it would take just under an entire day to get there. Where was he? Where was he when we needed him here. It makes me feel horrible to speak like a selfish, spoiled kid(?) but i really was just a kid that had a dad… only for the sake of saying that i do, but where was he?.

The worst thing was he cared. He cared for me. He used to care for mum until the day the tragedy struck. A day that is constantly referred to by him and always forbidden to my mothers tongue. He finds satisfaction in torturing her by subtlety hinting the things she did with the known stranger we welcomed with open hands into our house but she did that out of the same desperation to seek comfort and shelter from running a household with no help. which i understood but never helped her with. when i could i hadn’t because… she didn’t ask for my help. My least favourite crime.

I’ve made playlists, artwork and stories catering for school, boredom and fun about events that occurred in the hellish year of 2019. A cursed year for my family, but it was also one of the best years of my life. Sometimes i think to myself, what if that year was a person? she would be the prettiest girl who was my best friend, that my crush would be head over heels for. Luckily, I was blessed to receive that after 2019, but that’s for later. 2019. you were my worst success.

2019 was filled with concerts, my support from my friends back in a country that accepted my mother and myself immediately, but wouldn’t let my father join the friend group so easily and the most sweet and soured memories of a lifetime. My friends were my family back then. I never wanted to be away from them, they made me happy. they made me laugh, yelp and giggle. They made me who i am today. without them i wouldn’t be able to hold onto myself for any longer than one month after the tragedy.

I see the tragedy almost as an open wound, that’s trying to heal. One of us- my mother has the last layer of the skin healing over, and is almost on the road to a complete healthy recovery, at least I think so. Me, i have scabs growing over them that i annoying pick on, but only halfway through whenever i think about the girl i am. And as for my father, it’s an open wound. a deep wound on the knee that i got from playing “IT” with my friends that i was taken to the nurse for, and she stitched it close. That type of wound, that’s need a forceful shut but my father isn’t ready for the stitch yet.

Either way it’s bound to scar us all.

Session 4: Sabba Khan + Stamp Making

This week’s visitor was London based graphic novelist Sabba Khan. In her book The Roles We Play she draws on her experience as a second-generation Kashmiri Muslim migrant to unpack the historical events that lead to the majority of the British Pakistani diaspora’s tracing their origin to Mirpur - an area that was literally submerged under water with the construction of the Mangla dam (post the partition of India and Pakistan).

I poured over the illustrated pages of Saba’s book earlier this summer and it has left a lasting impression on me.  One of the central themes she explores is the challenge of ‘fitting in’ and ‘belonging’ something all migrant communities grapple with, across generations. It was both moving and inspiring to listen to Sabba speak so candidly about how she came to write and illustrate her book, which took seven years to come to fruition.  Sabba’s distinctive, paired-down illustration style draws on her architecture background and her use of diagrams are incredibly adept at breathing life into complex, layered and often fractured aspects of identity and belonging. 

Sabba’s presentation took us on a journey that explored the experience and impact of migration and displacement through her mother’s eyes, a perspective not shared often enough. She shared photographs and social media pages that formed part of her archival research. There were two especially poignant photographs that Sabba translated into drawings in her book.  The first captured families carrying their belongings in their hands and on their backs while wading through water that was being channelled into the dam. The second was the image of religious buildings being submerged under water. There were temples, gurdwaras and mosques that literally drowned under the huge body of water that filled the dam…

Another distinctive feature of the book is that each of its thirty chapters has an accompanying song in a playlist that is both playful and nostalgic (especially for those of us who grew up in the UK in the nineties).

Afternoon -Group and Individual Projects

As a follow up to our visual research trip to Ladypool Rd last week, we worked on preparing our sketches and photographs for a risograph  group newsletter/zine.  We are aiming for one A6 image each but we can adjust sizing using a scanner/photoshop. It was really interesting to see what group members were working on, some focussed on photographs while others on sketches and typography.  We were encouraged to annotate our images with text and had a manual typewriter to hand (which created a clickity clack soundtrack for the rest of the afternoon). With guidance from Sofia and Heiba, some group members completed their risograph print while others, including myself used the session to make adjustments to the artwork layers and iron out any issues that interfered with the effectiveness of the risoprint.

Alongside this flurry of activity, Sofia demonstrated how to carve alphabet stamps from erasers using a craft knife and group members set out to complete a set of alphabet stamps with a smattering of punctation symbols (I believe the mission was accomplished without any bloodshed). Looking forward to our next session and seeing the individual work come together as one publication.
