One of my big gripes about Manifest is that they really leaned into the love triangle trope. Don’t get me wrong, the love triangle between the protag, her almost fiance and her best friend was compelling--- her two people finding love together in the wake of her death, only for it all to be derailed when she suddenly comes back from the dead? It’s all good people struggling to navigate uncharted waters together. I love it. But in 1B? Lame. First off, some new guy shows up and is immediately a love interest? Cheap. Good guy almost fiance immediately goes feral on him in order to protect the protag like some damsel in distress? Tired. It was totally not my thing.
So now I wanna recreate the first love triangle, but turn it into a poly ship. Like.... Lena and Andrea are on the outs when Lena goes on her trip, and flirts up a storm with Kara. But then she comes back and Andrea is married to Lena’s best friend Sam, and of course Lena is like, okay, so I’m alone. But then Sam and Andrea both come to her and explain that even though they’ve found happiness together, something always felt like it was missing. Lena was missing. But now Lena’s back, and they don’t want to live without her.
They aren’t together forever-- maybe it even ends amicably-- because after all this is a supercorp story. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t have the love triangle turned poly ship we all deserve.
