Is Kou going to adopt Tsukasa's beliefs…??

It's more like me thinking too much... but... I will go with this little 'crazy' thought of mine... .... In the shortest way possible.

So, Minamoto Kou...

A boy born into the great exorcist Minamoto family, that is tasked to exorcist all kinds of supernatulas at the spot no matter what. That's the rule they live and stand for, for generations. And, he adopted it eventually, as a member of that family. As a little kid and until now, he looked up to his strong older brother and wanted to become a great exorcist like him one day.

But, he always believed he is weak, good for nothing, stupid and doubted himself and his abilities. A lost teenager who is looking for his true call out there. He wants to do something great in his life, and be a great 'hero'. The one to bring piece and happiness to everyone. A huge goal.

So, trying to prove his capability of becoming a good exorcist, he started with 'Hanako-san'. Then, after sometime, started to doubt himself, thinking that maybe, his beliefs about supernaturals were wrong and maybe.. there is something called 'good' supernaturals after all. That's the thing, his older brother says it's nonexistent. From there, we can get he is not really like his brother or his family on that regard, he is trying to do the right thing, when he is fully convinced it's the right thing to do, he doesn't want to regret anything and do things because it's just.. like that. Things got complicated and he decided to keep a close eye on 'Hanako-san' for the time being up until now. So, after that... he is still trying... to find his call out there.

After some time, he met a weak ghost called 'Mitsuba'. Things escalated quickly and he 'lost him'. After that, believing that the reason of his grief is a being called 'Tsukasa', he decided to hate him and seek revenge against him. The being called 'Tsukasa' took a part of 'Mitsuba' and used it to create a copy of him. A copy that Kou, swore to save and help in some way.

After some events, he couldn't really do anything for Mitsuba 2.0. He got him back in a fake world, he tried to 'join' him, but that didn't work, he lost him again since Mitsuba 2.0 willingly went back to Tsukasa, yet again. Then the severance came and he lost him yet again. He dealt with so much pain from that whole 'Real/copy Mitsuba' experience. Then, after the severance, he got him back, at his house door. After some events, he discovered a new cruel fact yet again, adding more pain to his past one. And who knows how are things going to end up. Now...

After all that pain he went through... after the whole 'real/copy Mitsuba' thing... where does he stand now? What did he learn from all the events he went through from the very start of his story up until now? Where does he stand now?

What kind of hero does he want to become? The one who will save everyone and bring them happiness... now... after all that... what valuable lessons did he learn? especially from his 'real/copy Mitsuba' experience.

The 'Real Mitsuba' experience:

He tried helping real Mitsuba's soul/ghost rest in piece by helping him take a photo he wants, instead of going for the 'exorcist' choice immediately, then Tsukasa showed up to fulfil real Mitsuba's wish (changed him into a monster and he met his end 'that way' when Hanako showed up because of what Tsukasa did, "according to Kou"), and Kou got a little taste of how the world is unfair and shouted that to Hanako, but... he put the blame on Tsukasa at the end instead of the 'real' cause of his pain, because of how naive and lost he still was.

The 'copy Mitsuba' experience:

At the stage it's in now... he became like this:

He is pretty much acting against his belief system. As a minamoto, his job is to get rid of any supernatural at the spot no matter what, he decided to do the right thing, he will do it when he feels: yes, this supernatural is bad and dangerous. And now? his friend, is in fact a dangerous, he can eat humans or even better, he tried to eat him because he couldn't hold back anymore. He said he is a monster to him. Yet... Kou... was OK with that. He accepts him and is trying to help him and doesn't want to lose him (the same can go for Real Mitsuba, he won't see him a monster now and will get that was needed to happen for him to stay and will accept him and won't want to lose him). Later, he is crying in despair at the end. Maybe he gets now... that life is not easy, bright and colorful. It's full of pain and sometimes, you will take many cruel decisions, and even hurt those who you love or even be aggressive with them, things are not bright all the time. Can this stage of this experience be his 'wakeup' call?

Will he finally open his eyes, and see Tsukasa was only trying to grant real Mitsuba's wish all the time with the only possible way he had? Will he finally get that real Mitsuba was himself and Tsukasa didn't turn him into a monster? and just like he accepts copy Mitsuba for the mosnter he is now, he was going to accept real Mitsuba for what he has become, if that meant he will be able to stay. Will he see Tsukasa was the one even giving them the chance to be together forever as both of them want? Will he see Tsukasa was in fact doing both of them a favor? Even in the copy Mitsuba case, they are free to be together all they want. They can have each other. After getting that Tsuaksa was never what he thoguht he is... after getting he was wrong about him... when he gets his whole revenge was stupid...

Will he get he was blind all the time, running after a wrong 'target' and saying it's the reason of this pain in both the Mitsuba cases? Will he see his revenge is not against the right 'target' and get what his real 'target' is? Who is the real reason for his and his friend's 'pain'?

Will he learn now the lesson of all the pain he went through up until this point? Will he open his eyes now... and see things for how they truly are? Will he see the world he thought it's bright and colorful for what it truly is? How will he embrace all that pain? What kind of person will he become after he does so?

Now, if all I suggested came to Kou's mind... that would be the best development for him in my opinion... He would understand how the world really works now. It's like a wakeup call to him, to open his eyes to the real truth of the world. It's a cruel place. He would see all Tsukasa did to Real Mituba was OK and really needed. He will see Tsukasa did everything so Real Mitsuba can stay, and so the 2 of them can be together forever. He will also accept that was the only way for Tsukasa to help Real Mitsuba and to make them stay together, even if it sounded 'cruel and bad', it's not like that when it's needed and the only way out. Just like he treated Mitsuba 2.0 in the last chapter. He was so cruel with Mitsuba 2.0 to force him eat so he can stay, since it's the only way, even if it was cruel. Tsukasa... was the one who worked really hard.. harder than him or even real Mitsuba to keep them together. They were having fun.. while he was the one doing all the work.. until the very end, up until Hanako showed up. Even later, he gave him a chance to have copy Mitsuba and become friends with him, have time with him, until now. Opening his eyes to the full truth now... He will get that the 'world' and its 'rules' are his real target. This cruel world and rules are the reason of his pain, grief and misery. They are the reason Real Mitsuba and Mitsuba 2.0 faced all these cruel things. My true 'target'... is the world itself. After understanding all that... after getting who his real 'target' is... after embracing all the pain... he will find his true call... the thing he was looking for since the very start of his journey... His true role...

He will finally open his eyes to...

That 'Tsukasa guy'... was right all along...?

And what is holding me from achieving that… is the world itself and its rules.

Will he see that Tsukasa's way of looking at things is right, agree with his philosophy and will now answer:

Was that Kou's true call? Was he destined to go through all the previous experiences… to get to this pint? Will his goal be... to change this unfair world?

Was Tsukasa expecting things will go this way with Kou, and then.. he will see the 'cruel world' as it is... and stand against it? Is it why he talked about it with him?

Are we in for a surprise... to see Kou accepting Tsukasa's way of seeing things.. and starting on fighting the world and its rules? Whether he joined forces with Tsukasa or not... it's kinda interesting to think about. Is that the true fate of Kou Minamoto? It could be... it's fun to think about it this way.

Kou and Mistuba are literally the definition of like "it's not gay if you've got socks on" or saying "no homo" after being almost painful amounts of gay

posting again at nearly 1am :P

another small analysis (if you can even call it that)

what im going to be talking about takes place in jshk, chapter 79, a quick recap. This is during the red house arc, and at this point in time kou and nene are in the red house, whilst akane and teru are at the shrine talking to what seems to be either a worker at the shrine or a family member/family friend of teru’s (and aoi’s in the far shore but shes not very relevant in this chapter).

after they fail to get something out of the “family friend”, teru exhaustedly lyes down and starts “ranting” to akane ab how hard his life is

and whilst doing this they somehow get to the topic of aoi. And akane starts to wonder if teru GENUINELY likes her. And i mean we can kind of tell he doesnt, but its still a little odd to see him act like this

does he like aoi? We never truly will know, but theres alot of things implying he doesnt like her (and vice versa) but im too lazy to go digging those up so just take my word for it 😭

but akane doesnt even look mad here??? he’d usually either bitchslap someone for talking ab dating her or even hitting ppl with a fucking spiked bat who glance at her

but this? who knows. And not to mention teru looks almost sad when akane mentions him possibly liking her. Almost as if he misunderstood his intenions??

This is very interesting to me, he looks almost distant, but not in the way of no one understands him or he wants to get away from everyone but in the “im trying to tell you what i mean but you’re not getting it” kind of way.

you see it too right? Pls tell me im not insane 😭

but why is he looking like this at akane? Well lets come up with a few ideas. one reason could be because he’s possibly “hinting” to akane that he likes aoi, although this doesnt make much sense considering he literally asked him that straight up and thats his literal direct response.

another reason could be that he’s sad akane’s brought-ten up her again. Not because he dislikes her, but maybe a little reminder that akane still likes aoi, and that he’s still JUST out of his reach.

After that akane talks about going to save aoi on his own since teru’s being a sad sack and wont do it himself, leading up to these 2 panels.

LIKE UHM???? HOLD ON

Lets look closer here 😭 not only does he have the most love-struck eyes ive ever seen, but also he’s blushing??? ON BOTH SIDES?? Also the way his expression takes up the entirety of the upper half of this panel shows us that this is kind of important and for us to really pay attention to it.

ive seen him make this face TWICE. Both times looking at who you may ask? Take a guess

I have so many takes on terukane but no one wants to listen to them so i go to tumblr and share with my singular follower💀 im not even exaggerating

Best Friend w/ a mischievous and powerful child god

[ PLATONIC HEADCANONS ] [ Jack, Zerofuku, Beelzebub ]

× This is inspired in Tsukasa (from Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun)

All those hours I've invested on hearing Kikuo's music and reading JSHK manga have to pay off (im not complaining thought, it has been one of the best investments of my life)

I apologize because i just can't stop thinking in the little 4 years old Tsukasa that we met in the Red Mansion, he was so fucking cuteeee!!!!

Jack the Ripper

Living in the Valhalla was really peaceful and Jack were just enjoying his surroundings all by himself, he is used to be alone so it doesn't bother him just going by with what he is used to

Although, one of those days while he was just about to get some tea he end up meeting a little god who was really curious about whatever he was doing, Jack take a moment to appreciate the childish curiosity of the little one, who was practically ignoring him and just looking at everything that was on the table, just before smile and offer him a cup tea too

The young god doesn't hesitant nor even doubt in accepting his offer imediatly taking a seat across him, Jack where amused, the little one was truly just a kid, giving you the cup of tea and some cookies the time goes by just like that, you didn't say much but you answer whatever he asked you with a big smile on your face. Jack were really curious about you, it isn't too common to gods to approach humans and still the thought of you being all alone get stuck on his mind, he ask simple things trying to not pry so as not to arouse suspicion and just trying to decipher the little mistery you are, but at the end he really enjoyed your company

He doesn't force you nor expect for you to continue by his side, he just thank you after the tea but you seem more curious about the man, even start to take a liking for him, so you quickly started a friendship with him, either because you decided to follow him the rest of the day or you appeared the next day to take more tea with him, and Jack won't decline the opportunity, although he find it pretty funny at first

You were so carefree and cute that he can't help but take a liking to you too pretty quickly, and soon you two become inseparable, mainly because you are super clingy, but he doesn't mind it at all. Even when you are a god you are young one and Jack can't help but care for you just like if you were his little sibling and since you seem to never wanting to go away from his side he just feels like he has to take care of you, unconsciously taking your hand whenever you two go for a walk, fixing your clothes after you are done from playing around and even cleaning you for how messy you tend to eat your desserts

Jack end up getting used to how clingy you are, from time to time you tent to cling onto him like a koala so he most of the time is just carrying you, although there are times where he ask you to be more calm, like when he wants to relax or when is time for tea, however he doesn't complain for it, how he will complain when he see that whenever you two are together you always bring with the beautiful color of happines and love, you had never been in other colors whenever he is with you

However, since the two of you pass almost all the time together at some point he will notice how the other gods seem to respect you a lot and even fear you, he find it interesting and hilarious since he knows the cute little you that love spending time with him, but he had never see you use your power before, and he will try to learn about that part too

Soon or later he will discover the other side of you, that cruel and sadistic god that you can be, that god that like to mess with his victims, that god that is so curious about everything even in the more bizarre ways, that god that has not problem to kill or use whoever in order to get what they wants or fulfill the work you were asked for, and even after meeting the other side of you Jack will never fear you because he knows that whenever you see him you explode in excitment, besides he used to be an assassin so he has no room to judge you

Although Jack doesn't like to hurt innocent people so he will try to teach you to don't harm inocent people, and since he is so important to you is for sure that you will follow what he say, you could go as far to ask him if you can do something before going against someone, then again he doesn't mind it too much

As well, his way of seeing you doesn't change much, you still being the cute little god he had met some time ago that cling onto him like if he were the most precious person in the world, and he still take care of you

Zerofuku

When Zerofuku was consumed by hatred his full body trasformed too, becoming someone completely different. His transformation wasn't painless and it was with so much power that he end up draging the attention of however were close

You could met him either when he transformed because you were passing by and end up getting curious about what were happening, or one day you just find him walking around, it doesn't matter how you find him the important is that he had catch your interest and now you want to know more him

Without fearing anything you approach to him with all your childish ilusion and excitment, asking everything about his power and appearance, startling Zerofuku in the process, is been so long since someone look up at him with such excitment, and even so it only happened when he did things for others, besides right now he has nothing but hate and frustration, he didn't want to deal with anyone thinking that others will try to take advantage of him again

Getting desperate for how much attention you were putting to him or how you even tried to cling onto him he harshly push you demanding to leave him alone, he hoped that after that you will finally leave him alone but you are stubborn so you just stand up, shake your clothes and start following like nothing had happened

At the end Zerofuku has no other option than let you be by his side since you weren't going to leave him alone, still he tried to ignore you whenever you try to talk to him, but it doesn't work either because you practically force him to pay attention to you by clinging onto him

Once he got tired of you he asked you if you doesn't have nowhere else to be or someone else to bother and you, with all your innocence, answer that you actually don't have anyone else, people tend to avoid you and the only ones who approach to you is because the need to make a deal with you, Zerofuku sympathize with you from that part and thanks to that he just give up and let you stay with him, but still doesn't fully convinced of it

He doesn't really pry on your powers or anything, he knows you are a god but he doesn't care to much, but little by little he start to warm up with you, specially for how childish you are it amused him but at the same time annoy him from time to time, specially since you have no problem with disgusting things, and since he had grow up alone his only contact with humans were with all the misery he doesn't find too strange your like and curious for bizarre things, as well as not being too surprised for your sadistic side since he, right now, just hold hate

Zerofuku is used to be always all by himself, not really having anyone with him, and he had grow up slowly learning to take care of himself so when you came in his life it take him a while to learn to live with someone else, as well as look after your well-being, he isn't the best at doing it but he can't help but worry about you. Also, at the end he gets used to have you by his side all the time and even wait for you whenever you stop because something catched your attention or getting a little nervous whenever you go too far away, however he still has problem with you being so physically affectionate with him, he can endure hugs or holding hands from time to time but he doesn't like you clinging to him like a koala it makes him nervous

You can be pretty violent and sadistic when they provoke you, as well as if someone try to mess with him you have no problem with throw your hands for him, and even when he already know that or may even saw you fighting with someone he is still pretty protective over you, he can't help but care for you and since right now you are the only one by his side he gets protective over you and he doesn't really fear you neither, he knows that you are powerful and cruel when you want to but you had show nothing but love and care for him for a long time now so he doesn't has reasons to distrust you

Even if he end up separating he wont stop caring for you, the new seven gods will still keep you by their side, and that just mean that you have more of your favorite person (Saraswati and Ebisu being the ones who are more clingy and playful with you as well as Bishamonten being the more protective)

Beelzebub

Is been a while since Beelzebub had been trying to find someone stronge enough to kill him, traveling and fighting against anyone who he know that is stronge, so there is two ways of how you two could meet, that he heards the rumor of you being a god that is able to fulfill your wishes by all means or because you were wandering nearby where he was fighting someone once of those occasions. If he has went to you in hopes to make a deal with you being so young and childish make him lose his hope and give up on that option, in the other hand if you were wandering around he noticed you until the end of the fight, he was getting frustrated for winning once again when you interrupted him with your excitment for such wonderful and exciting fight!

It doesn't matter much how you two end up meeting in either case Beelzebub thought that you were a waste of time while you, in the contrary, were really interested on him to the point that you end up following him and even clinging to him trying to become his friend

Beelzebub isn't really good dealing with other people, he has been so much time alone and he doesn't think that he deserve to have friends after what he had done neither, but anytime he tries to get away from you you always manage to appear in his life again, and no matter if he is harsh with his words or his action you always show up again, at some point he may end up telling you what he had done to the people he had cares out of desesperation but you just inmocently asked if that was all. After that he had just given up and started to accept you in his life, and, honestly, he doesn't know if you are really kind or really stupid

It took him a long time to get used to have you around and for a while he just let you be and just give you short answers to whatever ask your childish mind have. Although he notice your special interest for the the creatures and fights he had before and even for Satan, always with a not so innocent look on your face, he doesn't know if he should feel concern or not, but he feels like it is something that does not concern him either

Also he tried to keep you away from all his plans and experiments, fearing that you will end up hurt for how irresponsable you are most of the time (or your tendency to get into dangerous situations) but at the end you find it out and from then he doesn't manage to get you away from his study or convice you to stop asking about what he is working on, so thanks for your insistence he start telling you more about the creatures he is trying to create, and with that is when your bizarre curiosity show up since you are more and more interested on the details or even suggest a few things to add, then again he doesn't know if he should be concern or not

However it took him even more time to get used to how touchy and affectionate you are, you can be really clingy and he tries to bear but when you start getting physical it makes him really nervous, it doesn't matter if you try to just hold his hand or completely cling onto him it always startle him, he is touch starved but he fears that he end up hurting you so for a long time he just prefer to keep physical contact to the minimun, but knowing how affectionate you are he will end up getting used to soon or later

He grows to care a lot for you and apreciate your company, he still from time to time thinks that he doesn't deserve it or get nervous about you getting hurt (by his own hand or not) but at the end you childish and yet weird behavior bring happiness to his life, so, as always, it reached the point were Satan tried to kill you, everything went black and when he regained consciousness you weren't there, he was already panicing when he hear your voice call him from behind, with surprise and the same excitment you always have for seeing him, quickly turning back to see you completly fine standing up there like nothing happened, but he still fear the worst so he hesitatly and yet desperately reach your side and look all over you searching for a posible injury

Still without being able to calm down he ask you what happened and you answer like nothing that he tried to attack you (but you thought that he was playing something) so you answered the same way and it seems that you won since you end up knocking him out, despite your way to explain it Beelzebub doesn't know what to do or how to feel outside of the guilt and shame, hesitantly clinging to your shoulders and looking down in shame he admitted that he tried to kill you, he fears your reaction but he can't bare not telling you the truth either, but you just ask him with all your innocence that if he really wanted to kill you and if he want to try to do it again, he was shocked for the lack of fear in your voice, and even more for the smile you give to him when he finally look at you in the eyes, Beelzebub start to cry while holding you so thighly and desperately, like if his life depend on it, still feeling ashame but now more worried about you, promising to himself that even when he doesn't deserve you he will protect you for everything and anything, even if it cost him his life, while you were just really excited because this was the first time Beelzebub hugs you

Hi, i love your theories on jshk. Here's one I was wondering that when that red house 'thing' asked for tsukasa's sacrifice in order to heal amane , Maybe the sacrifice was more than for him to just disappear physically. I think maybe the sacrifice was tsukasa's mind , his kind heart, selflessness, caring nature . When that thing became a part of tsukasa like a parasite it consumed or fed on all of it. Maybe that's one of the reasons why we see the present tsukasa being emotionally detached or being heartless at times. Any thoughts?

Wow, that's a pretty interesting and tragic take on the situation. I'll confess that I've always wondered what that thing consumes, it keeps its victims alive for long, long periods.

I don't know how to tell you exactly how alive, but there is no rest, they get stuck somewhere. Tsukasa came back, so the body is still there, and as Nene said, it was warm and had a pulse.

So, if it doesn't consume the body, it consumes the mind, as we saw happen to the other Kannagis.

Despite this, I can still see Tsukasa's sentimental side. He's sad, he misses, he still loves, maybe not to the same extent as before, but it's still there.

Seeing him melancholy when he calls Amane selfish, seeing him sad when telling Nene that Amane won't come to save him, even if he calls, seeing his happiness when he meets his older brother again, these are his feelings reflecting through the actions.

The expression he made when agreeing that he knows Amane hates him, is the same look he showed as a child. Tsukasa is still there, he is.

He always has been.

He sings to calm down, to remember some good moment in the past, a song that brings him good and comforting memories.

A person without any feelings is totally cruel and vile, there are no feelings about absolutely anything. He could have just hit Nene on the head and make her pass out so she would stay quiet, but he didn't.

He could just get revenge on Amane, but, he loves him, so he never will.

Tsukasa shares his body with that creature, the cruel side is linked to him, his eyes turn black when he is about to do something bad. Those aren't Tsukasa's eyes, they're that thing's eyes.

Tsukasa's eyes shine, they are golden like gold, we could compare them with the little hope that there is still for his salvation.

Amane didn't give up on him, because for many years he believed that Tsukasa still existed there, he still had his brother in that body. And he's right.

Tsukasa is a little boy who had to deal with everything alone, who had to learn to deal with his own feelings, his own sadness. That he had to give up everything for someone he loves very much. And he came back, even though he knew that the person he loved most would one day kill him.

He came back because he wanted to know why.

And he suffered in the process. After his death, the suffering dragged on for years as he tirelessly called for him, alone, again.

So, he decided it was time to put an end to it all. And he was waiting for this moment so much, that we can see the relief on his face. Finally it would all be over.

That thing took away his innocence, and even though it consumed and influenced him

There are still feelings, there is still a love that no one can rip from Tsukasa's chest.

Not even Amane himself could.

Love is the only thing that keeps Tsukasa moving forward, he is there to fulfill Amane's wish.

Someone without feelings is never there for anyone but themselves.

Tsukasa suffers from the beginning for loving too much.

Whilst rereading JSHK, I forgot how much I adore the early Hanako and Nene interactions—

From the start, despite whatever motives Hanako had, it was still such a dokidoki moment when he “granted” Nene’s wish about being in couple even though it wasn’t quite the way Nene had expected.

And the cute little teasing and flirting is just so adorable and wholesome?

And we have their first real moment—where Nene drops the -san honorific and changes it to -kun so that she and Hanako could be like real friends—and his the shocked look on his face before he gives the most warm, genuine smile, it’s just so precious ;;

And of course more cute little teasing flirting~

And then he kisses her~ and this is the part where Nene’s brain gets all twisted, twisted in the sense she starts to question her feelings for Hanako and whether or not the kiss meant anything.

And she truly gets her hopes up that Hanako does, in fact, like her because he asked her to meet under the infamous Confession Tree.

And as she realizes that the reason he asked her under the tree was to take care of a supernatural—she tries to laugh it off and act as though it’s not a big deal—he’s not her type anyway, but…

And Hanako notices a change in her behavior and makes it into a joke—that Nene’s upset there was no real confession—

And she breaks down crying—because she is upset—because she’s a hopeless romantic who thought it was finally happening—that this boy who’s not her type—who’s been flirting with her—saving her—protecting her—she’s falling and he crushed her.

The regret and horror on Hanako’s face too is significant because, for the first time, he realizes how he hurt her. That he hurt her feelings and it’s as simple as that.

And he gets shy and flustered—and doesn’t want her to leave crying and upset over him—because this was never supposed to happen—

And at the very last second, before she’s goes beyond the gate where he can’t reach, he grabs her hand and pulls her gently—with his hat off—he sincerely apologizes—something he’s probably never had to do in over 50+ years of being a supernatural—because he realizes what he did wrong—that he led her on and hurt her..

And he pulls her against his chest and hugs her—letting her cry against him. And this is such an intimate moment—to hold someone as they cry.

It’s just so purely romantic and sweet. And it’s the moment I think their feelings for each other truly sparked.

Which definitely was not part of Hanako’s grand plan…

amane yugi; prompt 27: “Who you gonna call?” / “Ghostbusters?”

since halloween was right around the corner, it meant more apparitions, more apparitions meant more work for the four of you. you and yashiro especially dreaded this season, because it meant being dragged around by hanako-kun everyday to exorcise some ghost that went out of control.

sighing, yashiro put her head on the desk.

“you good?” you inquired the exhausted girl.

“no… i’m too tired to go clean the toilets today” yashiro complains before burying her face in her arms.

“y’know since halloween is soon it’ll be-“

“be helping hanako-kun exorcise apparitions?” she finishes.

“yup”

“even worseee”

you chuckle, “well, just get some sleep now, i’ll show you my notes later”

yashiro’s eyes lit up as you offered that, “yess thank youu _____”

“no problem”

when class ends you gently shake yashiro awake who was peacefully sleeping for the last hour—you have no idea how she didn’t get caught.

“yashiro? wake up.”

you can hear a groan from her before she looks up at you, “we’re going to hanako-kun now?”

“yeah”

stretching her arms and gently slapping her cheeks, she stands up, “okay! ready!”

“wow! that was a quick recovery!”

yashiro simply nods before dragging you away to the girl’s restroom. slamming open the door, you’re greeted by hanako-kun.

“ah! my assistant and my assistant’s assistant.”

“assistant’s assistant?” you repeated, skeptical that is even a thing.

“what? is that not a thing?”

“definitely not!” yashiro cuts in.

“anyways,” hanako starts, “who you gonna call?”

you and yashiro look at him confused until you both eventually realize what he’s referencing.

in unison the three of you respond, “ghostbusters?”

“wait- kou-kun!? when did you get here?” you question, surprised by the new face.

What Makes a Yorishiro?

Well wouldn't you like to know...

But no, really, what DOES make a yorishiro? I thought I knew at first, but recently, I've started thinking my definition is a little... off.

So I wanted to revisit yorishiro in this post, and review the explanations AidaIro has given us within the context of JSHK! Please, join me, as I barrage you with screencaps you have probably seen a hundred times. ☆ミ

Our first introduction to yorishiro is Hanako in Ch. 6, where he explains that the divine yorishiro are like batteries to the school mysteries. If you get rid of them, they power down! Easy to understand.

He also makes mention of the fact that this yorishiro should be located in the innermost reaches of Yako's boundary. Obviously, the best offense is a good defense, so keeping your yorishiro in the safest, least accessible part of your boundary is a no-brainer. Still worth mentioning, though.

Finally, Hanako states that it's something that "has the most value" to No. 2, and something that "means a lot to her." These are very positive connotations. Nene then equates this to the scissors Yako received from Misaki, a token from her first love.

Much later, Tsuchigomori explains to Yashiro that yorishiro are objects with the strongest feelings connected to them. This is veeery interesting, because this is vague enough that it could mean any type of feeling.

A page later, Tsuchigomori says that the reason the moon rock is his yorishiro is because Amane changing his future surprised him. So it seems like the primary emotion behind this yorishiro could have been surprise. However, considering Tsuchigomori cared a lot for Amane, it's hard to say it didn't also come from a place of love.

...anyways I am skipping No. 3 because it doesn't matter yet...

Briefly touching upon Shijima Mei, it makes sense why the sketchbook is her yorishiro. It's a memento from her creator, and the place she originally sprung to life. I can't say exactly what emotion or feeling could be tied to it, but all that matters is that it's obvious she cares deeply for the original Shijima Mei.

Mei even says so herself!

Very touching.

And now, we are finally getting to the reason I made this post!!

THIS HOT MESS

See, in Ch. 94, Hakubo makes it clear that he is not able to feel love in a traditional sense. It is, apparently, too foreign an emotion for a demon, and even more so for a demon that lacks desire like he does. So naturally, he eats her.

The thing about Sumire is, I think she woke up that desire within him. This is the closest thing to love he can feel, but he can never truly love her as he is. Not in the right way.

A bit tragically, Sumire actually directly quotes Tsuchigomori's quote from the 4 PM Bookstacks, which is that a yorishiro is an object that the school mystery has the strongest emotional attachment to. Ignoring the fact she is literally calling herself an object, she interprets this as him returning her same feelings. Oh, my poor girl...

Still, No. 6 is a school mystery, and his connection to Sumire is the most powerful emotion he has ever felt. He even openly admits he would fall in love with her if he was human, proving this is just a demon’s version of “love.”

Thus, in the end, I would say that every yorishiro so far has had a theme of love behind it. And isn't that sweet? Isn't love the strongest emotion of all? Love is always said to overcome every odd, isn't it?

But what about loss? Can we not say that these yorishiro didn't emerge from feelings of anguish? After all, the loss of a loved one is so powerful,

it can even take another's life.

How sad.

...The thing about Tsukasa and Amane is, I can't say what the primary emotion behind him being his yorishiro is. Amane is all over the place when he comes to Tsukasa.

One emotion I see is fear.

Not necessarily of Tsukasa himself, but what Tsukasa reminds Amane of. Of what Amane became. Out of control, and capable of taking the life of his own brother. He is his own brother's murderer, and it terrifies him.

His greatest fear in the Hell of Mirrors is his brother's dead body, after all. A reminder of what Amane really sees himself as: a killer.

But one could also say guilt is a powerful emotion for Amane. Not only did he commit murder, a crime, but he did it towards his own flesh and blood. His little brother. As the elder sibling, it was his duty to protect him, not kill him.

Tsukasa even uses this against him, being shown to manipulate Amane's feelings about murdering him for his own purposes.

But would guilt really be enough? What about sorrow?

I already alluded to Amane taking his own life shortly after killing his brother, but he was also very close to his brother as a young child, and at least up until they entered middle school.

The loss of anyone in your life can hurt, no matter who they are. What makes it most painful, though, is that they’re close to you. Dear to you. Loved by you.

A loved one dying is terrifying.

The guilt is overwhelming.

You’re filled with unbearable sorrow.

Because you love them.

I must admit, while originally typing up this post, I wanted to end it on a theory that maybe a yorishiro doesn’t have to be selected out of a feeling of love. And I think that can still be true; Hakubo’s feelings towards Sumire aren’t true love, after all, and Tsuchigomori’s feelings towards the moon rock could just be simple surprise.

Even so, I can’t believe that Amane doesn’t truly care for Tsukasa, or that love is not the driving force behind his emotional attachment to him. It is a toxic love, for sure, and one that brings him intense pain and sorrow, but one he cannot help but feel. I only hope that they may one day mend things between them.

Riffing off of my last post... I want to think about something! Or, introduce a thought....

first off, a magical spell to ward off evil. In your mind spins the image of the Yugi twins kissing peacefully, happy in their futon together... ahhhh! Okay... we resume now.

Perhaps this is obvious to some, but it might not be to others, so why not voice it.

I think valuing the gender of characters is your preference individually, there are preferences I have, too! Tastes, aesthetically, and such. But, to some extent, I think being rigorous and strict about avoiding say, 'male/female' relationships, or hating 'male characters', in the pursuit of loving queerness & loving women for example, can go a little overboard... ooonly in that, narratives are not always representing only what they appear as, and you can't be so sure what other people are representing in abstractions. This post is only for people who might feel sensitive about those abstractions-- if you don't have a care in the world, don't bother reading on...!

Here is an example, from a popular series many love. The Moomin novels are precious to me, I love the expressions of the author, Tove's, relationships and human experiences. Tove largely expresses herself through Moomin, a boy. She expresses her relationships with women AND men through that conduit. Ironically, the relationship between Moomin and Snufkin-- beloved by many!-- represents a 10-year love affair with a man in her life, Atos. While the story of Moomin and Too-ticky, is a representation of her relationship to her later long-term female partner, Tuulikki. I don't see fandom much explore or care about Moomin/Too-ticky, probably because it is M/F. I think that's kind of funny? I'm not here to make a judgement-- I write Snufkin/Moomin-- but, when I think about what people value in Tove VS what narrative they like in fiction, it's interesting that the real-life experiences influencing that fiction doesn't matter.

Meanwhile, a lot of female mangaka represent their traits through male characters. Arakawa connects to Edward Elric, and Yana Toboso projects a lot of herself into Ciel Phantomhive. While it's not stated as outright as all the other examples, I do believe Iro-sensei projects a lot of their personality into Hanako, and Aida-sensei seems to playfully draw Iro-sensei as Hanako, or embellish him with Iro-sensei's IRL habits.

We can look at a story like JSHK, and we can look at it literally as a story about ghosts and humans and such. Or, we can look at it thematically, and see a story about many, many more things we might relate to. Broad concepts of eschewing society's morals, strictures, or values (suchas Tsukasa), or following them to the point of pain (suchas Teru), who gets punished or forgotten and why, how to be happy in a world that doesn't care if you are happy (Hakubo, Sumire).... etc...

Hanako's struggle with Nene-chan, is that he cannot marry her, he cannot grow up with her, and 'has no future' with her. I would describe Hanako as chronically unable to conceptualize commitment for himself. At the start of the manga, this makes him a kind of playboy to Nene-chan-- flirtatious, harassing, but also closed-off. He sees his dynamic with Nene-chan as a temporary, short-term thing... a year of frivolity with a girl, something that can't 'go anywhere'. He can be capricious, but only because of a sense of hopelessness. This relationship cannot "go anywhere".

Much to be said about queer relationships being seen as 'a phase' in many cultures... something you do when young, but grow out of, moving into normative adulthood. I'm not saying that's the INTENTION-- but that you could happily choose to read it however you want, connect to it however you want.

I mean... gay marriage is not sanctioned across Japan... this concept of "a person you can play with a little when you're young, but never truly commit to" is a cultural concept there. It's interesting that when Nene-chan dreams, "I want to get married some day in the real world!", Hanako receives it as a rejection, and no longer plans to attempt to entrap her through bizarre, indirect circumstances.

Hanako can use strange, convoluted systems like making Nene-chan his kannagi, or binding her to him with the mermaid scale, to ensnare them together .... as much as you could uh, start a business with your lover, but perhaps not legally marry them. It's an interesting compromise, or as he says in Picture Perfect, 'I'm only using what I can'.

Picture Perfect is also about creating a fake fantasy world which fictionalizes everything into a saccharine and acceptable, normative fantasy one wherein Hanako is no longer a Mononoke, but the human, Amane. As Mitsuba says, "in this world, she can even marry No. 7!". What does it mean for Nene-chan to reject this sanitized, acceptable rewritten version of their love, & desire the haunting ghost, even with all of the foibles of that? She doesn't claim to hate the fiction, but it isn't the love she remembers.

The concept that kaii simply 'cannot access' certain aspects of society is interesting. This concept that humans engaging with kaii sincerely, are naive, short-sighted, and incapable of thinking of the 'big picture' is, too. It's childish of Nene-chan to chase Hanako, and others who 'know better' or think more 'realistically' chide or laugh at her for it (Akane, Teru, Mitsuba....). Mitsuba finds it funny that Nene-chan is so smitten with a lover she can't have for life. Mitsuba longs to be 'normal'. Hanako wants a 'normal' life for Nene-chan.

Just as well, however Amane or Tsukasa may have felt about each other, they were brothers. There is a limit to the level of closeness they can have. To put it bluntly, they can't get married, either, lol.

Amane/Hanako the entity may not 'have a future' with anyone he loves, as he may not ever have a proper, societally-acceptable love, with anyone. His love might always be something impossible to achieve-- the moon, out of his reach. That's an interesting trait for a main character.

I think it shouldn't be shameful or stupid or reductive to connect to Hanako/Nene, or Akane/Aoi (lifelong 'best friends'), or Sumire/Hakubo (who were hardly seen as people by anyone, their relationship's value anywhere from invisible to repugnant) .... we literally do not know Aida or Iro's relationships, experiences, we don't even know their own identities or personal lives all that deeply....! We don't know where they are writing or drawing from. But in that way, I think it would be doing a disservice to what you can connect to in a narrative, to presume it's only ever what it looks like on the surface.

For a great many authors & artists, we didn't get to know the greater narrative of their life until long after they died, and could reread their works with new context. I don't think people need to die for you to do that, though. If you notice a consistent theme, it might be intentional... or it might not be! You should have fun. You shouldn't worry too much about it IN-TEXT being wlw or mlm lol.... that's, just not how a lot of people choose to write their stories, even if their lived reality is exactly one thing. Even if there's not a deep reason, maybe it feels more fun or more playful to imagine oneself, a lesbian, as a nasty teenage straight boy. Maybe it even feels more 'real' but in a 'lol... tfw' way. Do you feel me on that??? Sometimes... I think things get a little too literal around the web lately in media analysis!!!!! I would love to encourage anyone who needs permission, to get a little less literal. I don't think you need to, imagine Hanako as a woman to make HanaNene appropriately lesbo vibes, or to justify yourself, a lesbo, liking it. You could be a lesbo and Hanako could represent the type of girl you are exactly. There are girls like that. I mean. Tsukasa represents the type of girl I am.... *paws out*

and aouhhhrho aoaaoouou disclaimer anyone can enjoy whatever they like etc etc have fun etc, live your life etc not saying everyone who likes XYZ is insecure or XYZ or should just blah blah or it's wrong to do blah blah write blah, this all isn't relevant to you whatsoever if you're happy and confident in what you like, proud to like it or whatever, this post is only!!!! relevant if you feel ashamed, embarrassed, silly, or dumb for 'seeing something' or relating to something 'not for you' or 'not there'!!! You don't know that it isn't there! You don't have to choose from .... the few same-gender options actually in-text. Or contort the canon around. You can see your own relationships in anything. Because people write their own relationships in a thousand ways.

My husband and I can write ourselves as two girls. As two girls and a boy. As two boys. As a boy and a girl. As two boys and a girl. As a boy and a nongendered thing. We do this obsessively. I wouldn't say any of these narratives are more or less accurate or true to our lives depending upon the genders aligning with our real life human bodies. We can be a thousand things, and we're still 'us'. We recognize 'us' in that which resonates.
